Wooooohoooooo okay guys heres another character study on a Narrator, this time on @demonicrhythms 's Percival. Like before, it's self indulgent and includes my Narrator. Thanks for letting me play with your character :)!
~~~~~~
Sometimes he endeavors to find different places for the purposes of tending to his life's work. While the confines of his home were usually enough for his quiet pasttimes, oftentimes they were not enough to jumpstart his creative and technical processes, so a change of pace is necessary. The environment in which one conducts their work may yield better results when an individual feels stimulated.
He finds himself in a myriad of places when he feels that his creativity is being stifled. The park bench outside an office building, in one of his friend's homes, a quiet cafe, and most recently, the public library near the Flats he calls home.
Of all the places he had chosen to frequent, the library might just be his new favorite. A reduced occurence for chatter, organized references for him to peruse in his free time, and fewer chances of a soul seeking to bother him.
Now, if only libraries did not have opening and closing hours. He would stay much, much longer if he was able to. And perhaps he might wish that he could bring in a cup of tea while he worked. He much would've prefered something aromatic to soothe his mild frustration right now.
01000110 01110101 01100011 01101011 00001010, he thinks with a slight grit to his teeth, already annoyed by how he's made multiple slight adjustments to his code yet the persistent issue still remained. He runs a simulation and clicks his tongue when an asset clips through the floor yet again.
He's about to scrap a whole section when he hears the soft huff of laughter from behind him. He stops in his tracks contemplatively, then turns to the offending stranger.
The stranger was standing a mere few feet away from him, arms crossed and green eyes squinting behind wiry rectangular glasses. The man was not someone he was familiar with, and coupled with the fact that he had been struggling with his work, his appearance and reaction only served to irritate him even further.
If Percival could make withering glares, he would. But considering his current appearance, it would be next to impossible to do so. So he opts to staring at the stranger pointedly, until the other one spoke.
“My apologies. It's just that– nevermind,” the man said, hiding his mouth behind his hand. He shifts, and the man's tail curls and twists behind him almost bashfully.
The man's... Tail...?
The man had the upper body of a human– or at least a humanoid, considering the unnatural green of the other's eyes and the sharp canines that he can now glimpse after the other had taken off his hand.
But the lower half was a different story. He possessed a yellow tail that ended in an arrowhead, and combining all of these features made the man look almost like a mythical creature. A specific one. Percival runs a quick search in his mind. Ah, yes. A Naga. A half snakelike creature, although the ghostliness of this man made him think he was anything but.
Wait, the voice. The familiar baritone voice that only a certain subgroup of people possess.
This man was a Narrator.
Percival adjusted the rim of his glasses. He attempts to refrain from sighing. He was not a sociable man, and he preferred keeping it that way. Though he had no mind for small talk or other types of conversations, he liked being brief and direct to the point. This man was not making any points as to why he should be speaking to him in the first place.
But the man was unrelenting. Despite the pointed stare, he walks– *floats* – closer to Percival, almost invading his personal space as he stares at one of the screens of his HUD. Before Percival could close the aforementioned screen and tell the Narrator to give him some space, however, the man speaks up.
“Have you looked at line 346 and 347? The one you just scrolled past. There's a stray comma inserted between two commands.”
Percival glances at the other Narrator, who had a tranquil look on his face after making such a comment. This fool, he himself has been combing through the code for a good few minutes trying to figure out what was wrong with it. As if this man could tell with just one glance– oh.
He sees it there; the typo that he must've overlooked because he was half-tired and overworked from the stress of trying to finish a new update for his work. He deletes the stray comma off the line, and runs the simulation again.
It works perfectly.
Percival freezes completely, admittedly stunned that this Narrator had spotted a problem that he had been trying to search for a good few minutes. He considers himself to be quite adept with weaving his own coding in his work; so someone who is more efficient than he is can potentially earn his respect. Possibly gratitude, though that may be cutting close to the boundaries of probability.
But he wouldn't lie– he does also feel slightly vexed at this Narrator's audacity to dictate his own work. Percival prided in both his individuality and his work ethic. He did not require assistance in something he does best.
Two conflicting emotions right here. What should he settle on? Decisions, decisions.
He opts for the latter. Just because it's his natural go-to response, and partially because he is in no mood to thank a complete stranger and open himself up to more distractions.
“Not that your input isn't appreciated,” he drawls lazily, letting the other Narrator know his input was not necessary *in the slightest,* “but I have my work under control. You did, however, shed a minute off my repairs. I suppose a commendation is in order.”
Percival is still quietly intrigued by how the Narrator had managed it, but he did not like wasting valuable time. He ignores the other Narrator in favor of moving onto programming the next part of the update, his onscreen keyboard typing at high speeds. But he doesn't feel the Narrator leave. Instead, the other person's presence only seems to settle more heavily.
When Percival sees the silhouette of the man fall upon his holographic screens, he stops entirely and sighs. This Narrator, hadn't he made his intrusion unwelcome enough already?
“Do you not have anything better to do than hover over my shoulder?” Percival finally says.
“I've not had a chance at seeing another Narrator in action,” he responds. When Percival says nothing, he clarifies with a “Working on his own Parable, I mean. It appears we all have different methods of manipulating realities.”
At this, Percival immediately exits out of all his screens and settles the palms of his hands on his lap.
“I dislike strangers looking at me while working on Parable updates,” he says with blunt finality. “I'm afraid I'm not interested in giving you a show.”
“Shame. Your work looks magnificent; I was about to ask for pointers.”
“Ask someone else.”
“Will do.”
The Narrator doesn't leave, but his tail still writhes as if betraying its owner's emotions. Percival couldn't help but glance at it when it starts to lengthen and run over the walls and floor of the room.
The man was completely serene, as if this was an everyday occurence. It might as well be.
Percival almost wants to ask a 'What *are* you?' to the other man, but that would be stupid. He's a Narrator, plain and simple. He saves himself at the last minute by asking, ”How did you know so quickly what needed to be fixed?”
"Ah. I'm a spirit that affects technological, mechanical, and digital entities. A technogeist," he replies. Well, that answers both his questions at the same time. “Seeing and manipulating code is second nature to me.”
That does make sense, but Percival does stop short as he absorbs the implications of the man's statement. There is a lot to unpack there, and he's not ready yet to examine them all.
“My powers help me control every facet of my Parable. The ability to remotely control electronics and programs is quite useful when your Parable consists entirely of it.”
Control? If the other Narrator meant almost everything, then... Oh, how he wishes. The ability to rein in his Stanley would be a blessing he will not take for granted.
His Stanley did not like him at all, and the sentiment is well reciprocated. He did not like his Stanley. He did not belong with his Stanley as other Narrators might have. And that made his work on the Parable much more difficult.
Percival so rarely voices his opinions, but this time, he does.
“Perhaps that would be equally as useful for me, should I have that power," he muses. “I have the luxury of being paired with quite an unruly protagonist. Not everyone should be so unlucky.”
The man says nothing. Percival snaps out of his reverie to look at the other man, who now was staring back at him with an unreadable gaze.
They stare at each other for a long moment, until the other man breaks the silence.
“No. My stanley is an entirely organic being. I cannot 'rein him in' in any way.”
A lot to unpack here, starting from the tone of voice, all the way down to the silence and his expression. It's clear there's a backstory here– consider Percival's curiosity piqued, but he has enough common sense to know the man does not want to speak of it.
“Shame. Anyways, if you'll excuse me, please afford me some space, I want to go back to my work. You have taken up enough of my time as is.” he waved a hand and pulls up his screens again, but this time he turns down the brightness so the other man had a harder time seeing.
To his surprise, the other man agrees. “I've occupied you enough. Perhaps next time, when you are freer to talk, I can engage you again.”
Percival scoffs. “What makes you think there will be a next time? We don't even know each other's names.”
The other man looks at him with unnervingly bright green eyes, as if he knows something Percival did not. He opens his mouth as if to say something, but closes it as if he opted not to.
“Perhaps not,” he agrees. “Perhaps this will be the last time you will be in this library.”
The other Narrator raises a brow. It was a challenge. A challenge of whether this encounter was enough for Percival to quit going to the library to avoid this strange, strange man.
After a long moment, Percival finally responds.
“I'll be back.”
