• the soothing slide of hot chai down your throat when you sit in the porch during monsoon— the perfect blend of aala, dalchini, lemongrass and lavang. The occasional cold raindrop hitting your face makes the experience even more peaceful.
• the way mehndi feels cold on hot skin, the way the intricate designs grow darker over time before they start fading again. It reminds you of your Tai, who sits you down every year to draw it on your palms. She complains about having to do it, but you both know she doesn't mind.
• eating with your hands instead of with a spoon and fork. The food is a blessing, and you are honoured to be able to touch it, taste it, enjoy it. You clear the paan faster than you ever have.
• Your Ajji massages tel into your scalp after dinner every five days. Sometimes the oil feels freezing cold, and other times it is boiling hot. You breathe in the smell and let yourself fall asleep in your grandma's arms.
• Sanskrit is a difficult language to learn. You have been toiling at it for over a year now, but are nowhere near as fluent as you would like to be. Your Maushi and Kaki sit you down and explain everything. The tables aren't nearly as boring anymore.
• You find the kajal your Ajji made for you when you were a wee baby, in the back of the attic with the rest of your baby things. The tiny metal dabbi is inscribed with beautiful designs and colours, and you brush off the dust and open the lid. It's still full to the brim. You smile. The next day, your crush tells you that your eyes are beautiful.
• Your Mama takes you out to the bazaar to get you your first true saree. Both he and you have been waiting for this day for years. You return home with a beautiful peacock blue silk nauvari.
• The Gajra in your hair has you feeling like you're flying above the clouds. It smells daivik, and you haven't stopped smiling since the boy pinned it to your braided ambada.
