One must read non fiction so they can become acquainted with which problems are cyclical and which problems are acute. I.e. sudden upsetting inflation in the American economy, the concept of a male alienation epidemic, as well as nervous fashy whispers of overpopulation, those are all at least 120 years old as far as complaints go. Meaning they are real problems in the way that, if your cushion upholstery machine keeps putting out cushions covered with human skin (but you keep selling the skin cushions, since you have them anyways), there are problems in the design of the system (maybe there shouldn't be a guy skinning funnel on the top?)

I’ve been digesting the video essay Orientalism & the Gerudo over the past couple of days. The first half of the video is a basic, consolidated summary of arguments I’ve seen people make about SWANA representation and Black representation regarding the Gerudo that also includes more academic sources to try to explain to newcomers or people unfamiliar with the term “Orientalism” where these points came from. I’m hoping this opens up some discussions across the wider fandom.

My only criticism is that, sometimes, the points can meander a bit between each other without clear boundaries between which talking point is which, leading to occasional moments of “Huh? How did we get here?” or “Wait, what about that other point you just made?” However, I think that’s a symptom of there being just so much to talk about regarding the broader umbrella topic that this video is trying to cover that it’s hard to know when/how to fit stuff in. You could make a whole essay about only how Arab men are depicted as aggressively misogynistic threats menacing Arab women to justify modern imperialist invasions of the Middle East by Western powers and how that ties in to the way Nintendo refuses to show Ganon having a more humanized, complex relationship with his own people. Even after a whole hour it feels like we’ve only just scratched the surface.

However, I also don’t think this “meandering” is necessarily negative because it sometimes ended up leading to great points that I hadn’t considered before. For example, I was initially confused about why the essay started focusing on Rauru and the plot of TotK after the halfway point, but it ended up not just being a useful example of how Japan reproduces Western tropes from pop cultural influences for fans who weren’t quite convinced about the essay’s arguments in the first half because they assumed Japan was in a cultural vacuum where racism doesn’t exist, but also gave me a totally new perspective about Rauru’s character beyond my initial Shintoist reading of his role as a divine ancestor that legitimized the royal family’s rule.

Rauru and Mineru’s designs and backstory borrow visual and literary tropes from depictions of indigenous peoples in American media to legitimize him as “indigenous to Hyrule” and therefore an important founding figure in its revised origin myth, but these tropes reproduced without awareness of their original cultural context also serve to “unperson” him as a character within the story. He’s sequestered into a distant past where he can’t really interact with characters in the present, not even truly “owning” the kingdom he founded, which instead passes to the Hylians, who coopted his legacy of unification for their own ends but completely forgot about him. He and his sister are treated more like “resources” for Link/the player to take advantage of to achieve their goals than characters in their own right. And, emotionally, the Zonai siblings are so distanced from the main cast and each other by being treated more like concepts of “nativeness” than people in their own right that their own descendant feels like a stranger visiting an exotic land instead of long-lost family reconnecting with her roots.

Like…it’s a really clever way to introduce two equally complex points that people should keep in mind when examining the Gerudo. First, that you can’t really treat Japan’s depictions as the exact same as Western depictions, because while Japan isn’t “the West,” it has its own complicated history with racism and imperialism born out of the “pan-Asian” nationalism of the early 20th century. At the same time, Japan doesn’t exist in a hermetically sealed cultural vacuum totally isolated from Western influences that makes Japanese creators incapable of learning about cultural nuances regarding racism, despite what fashy weebs personally invested in the myth of Japan being a magical exotic fairyland where “woke” doesn’t exist want you to believe.

I hope this video essay inspires other people to look into this topic further and maybe contribute their own works to the discussion.

A low whistle came from Hyuksoo as you walked out of the bedroom fully dressed in an outfit your stylist had prepared for you. You’d been a bit apprehensive about joining him for Paris Fashion week. The two of you had only recently gone public with your relationship after having gotten engaged after three years of dating. And while the response had been positive overall, you couldn’t help but think about the negativity that could come with you going to this event. Would they see you as some kind of gold digger jumping at the opportunity to stand in the spotlight?

“You look stunning, as usual,” he comments rising from his place on the couch in the hotel room’s living room.

You gave him a nervous smile as your hands smoothed the expensive fabric of the dress. It had to be the single more expensive item of clothing you had ever worn - definitely worth more than your entire life’s savings if you were to try and guess the price.

“You’ll do great,” he whispered softly as he stood in front of you, the few staff members that had helped the two of you get ready for the show fluttered around the two of you packing up any makeup products to avoid any accidental spills or stains. “And if you don’t like it you don’t have to come to another one ever again.”

Nodding, you let out a deep breath, allowing yourself to relax, putting any negative thoughts as far behind you as you could. Once you gathered all your wits the two of you made your way to the front door ready to leave for the event.

The door to the car opened and Hyuksoo stepped out lights flashing as the media took as many pictures of him as they could - at least before he turned around and extended his hand to you, helping you out of the car. The flashes blinded you. Your vision being impaired by lights, your hand naturally went to Hyuksoo’s arm gripping it tightly. He leaned over pressing a kiss on your temple and whispering a quick word of encouragement into your ear before beginning to walk into the venue.

Not once did the photographers stop taking photos, calling out for the two of you to turn and look at them. At a few markers on the path to the venue entrance, Hyuksoo stopped for a few pictures, you beside him each time, his arm resting at the small of your back in a comforting manner. Smiling and nodding at the paps, he continued walking noticing how frigid you were. He should’ve thought about a sweater or jacket, something to fight the cold night air when picking out your outfit.

Inside, the two of you quickly made your way over to your designated seats. Instantly your frame relaxed a little, goosebumps appearing on your arms in a more noticeable manner. He took off his suit jacket placing it over your shoulders.

“I didn’t think about the weather when picking out the dresses for you to choose from. I should’ve thought about that,” he whispered rubbing your arms gently to try and get more warmth to your cold body. “Once more people start sitting down it’ll probably get warmer.”

As more people began arriving, the venue grew a bit warmer, enough to give the blazer back to Hyuksoo before the two of you got up to get some of his fellow actors and models who were in attendance. Every time he introduced you as his fiancé, a light heat would spread across your cheeks - the label still feeling strange when being introduced to new people. With a few minutes to go before the show started, the two of you returned to your seats, talking amongst yourselves before the show finally started.

Each model that graced the runway showcased the different outfits beautifully. The mixture of extravagant and modest designs was entirely new to you, well in person at least. It was one thing to watch fashion shows through live streams and broadcasting stations, but in person, it was certainly much more captivating.

At least until you noticed the suggestive look one of the models sent Hyuksoo followed by a flirty wave. It was very brief and you were sure that if you had been so focused on the plain expressions you wouldn’t have noticed the obvious emotion. You looked at him, your eyebrows furrowed in confusion. He seemed to chuckle beside you leaning over and placing a chaste kiss on your lips.

“Don’t pay it any mind,” he whispered. “It happens often, but when I have the most beautiful person on the planet by my side I don’t think any flirtatious advances will able to sway my love for you.”

Looking around for a moment, you noted that everyone was too busy paying attention to the models to the two of you any mind. Leaning over, you whispered softly into his ear.

“If this is your master plan for getting laid tonight by being all sweet and romantic…it’s working.”

For once since the beginning of the night, Hyuksoo was the one to get flustered, his face bearing a light pink color. And you can bet that someone managed to catch the kiss and it was the talk of the town the very next day.

In Taoism, possession is believed to be caused by a disturbed or summoned ghost, so he might hire some Fashi priests to exorcise you

He's no stranger to being possessed by a violent spirit so he kind of gets it, I mean he can't judge

If you're only using your hands to kill him, then he'll just set himself on fire until it passes. Thankfully, the spirit possessing you isn't very intelligent

If he's in a place where he can't be on fire, then he just kind of holds you back with a broom while he gets on with his day, again the spirit isn't very intelligent

assorted thoughts on gjallarhorn and fascism

a bit of serious analysis for once in my life:

recently read victor klemperer's lingua tertii imperii (language of the third reich) for a class and he had a chapter on how the romanticization of war and martyrdom and loyalty was key to fascist rhetoric. so naturally i had to relate this to IBO.

gjallarhorn is already pretty fashy in aesthetics (using wagner's valkyries for the valkyrie frames instead of the names in actual norse mythology) and ideology (humans should be pure and natural, a certain group of people is superior while some are inferior etc etc) but this is a new perspective (at least to me) regarding gjallarhorn's emphasis on honor and loyalty and sacrifice

also the medieval-aristocracy-knight aesthetic, other than looking dope as fuck, is also reminiscent of those marble statue pfp RETVRN accounts on twitter formerly known as x, and the whole return to a "better" past thing is of course deeply reactionary. fascism is an ideology that relies heavily on aestheticism, it is very important to look cool, or that things are pretty (think designing uniforms to be as attractive as possible so that young people would sign up)

note: of course you could argue sunrise used wagner's valkyries because it's better known and not to make a reference to him being a massive nazi, and i don't really have a counterargument other than i like to believe artistic/writing choices are intentional until proven otherwise

i'm aware romanticizing falling in battle etc etc is a concept that predates fascism and is also present in other ideologies. however gjallarhorn is already pretty fash-coded and i like to think that the romanticization part also serves towards that purpose

I want to take a minute to talk about something regarding what it's like to be ace in the queer community. This is very much addressed at allos, so please listen.

We constantly have to deal with the fact that many people in the queer community don't want us there and don't really pay attention to or care about us, if they're even aware of our existence at all. This is incredibly disheartening and isolating. It keeps us from finding help and comfort and acceptance.

Every time I see a space designated for queer people, I have to wonder if I'll even be acknowledged, let alone welcome. I have to wonder if I will be politely tolerated at best or actively harassed at worst. I have to wonder if there will be any resources for people like me. I have to wonder if it's worth my time to be there. Even when it's an explicitly pro-aspec space, I have to wonder how much of that is just lipservice. All that wondering keeps me away.

It's in the little things too, and boy are there a lot of little things. Do you have any idea what it's like to go to Pride and have to ask vendors if they have any ace stuff only for them to very awkwardly tell you they don't? And to feel how off-put they are by you? Do you have any idea how it feels to go to a queer section at a bookstore or library knowing there will be nothing there for you, but hoping anyway, only to be proven right? It wears on you.

I think a lot of allos don't realize how bad it can fuck with you to be so hated by other queer people that you basically have nowhere to go, no community to turn to. The aspec community is comparatively small, rarely spoken of, and quite fractured, thanks to exclusionists. We have a hard time finding each other, let alone helping each other, and getting our voices heard without allo help is next to impossible. You may not think of yourself as an exclusionist or think you have anything against aspecs, but I invite you to examine how much you actually acknowledge and include us and how you behave around us. If you truly want to help us, it's on you to make sure we know we're welcome and supported. This doesn't just mean slapping our flag on merch or putting books on shelves. It means being there when we need you and not being shy about it. Ace person getting the old "I could fix you" in the group chat? Fucking handle it. Ace person trying to speak out about an ace issue? Lift up their voice.

Things are a little better than they were ten years ago, but it's still pretty damn clear how much bias there is against us in the queer community, to put it gently. To put it not so gently, we know y'all fucking hate us. It hurts more than I can say and does damage well beyond the scope of just us. Aspecs are one of the softest targets for the fashies right now, because we have so little support and just enough visibility to be on the radar. We are one of the corpses they will be stepping over on their way to you. Abandoning us just helps them achieve their goals faster. Stop trying to cut off a limb that was always there just because they told you that you'd look more acceptable without it.

Uhm, hey! I see your red leader design and while it's neat and all, I have some real concerns as it has some nazi dogwhistles in it and I highly recommend mayb editing it a tad? The horns on the hat looks fine however the hat ITSELF is a stalinist hat (who was a fascist masking as a communist lol) and if u wanna go the hat route, there are actual communist hats you can use as reference when u google them! The red/black color scheme is also a real big iffy especially when combined with general garb like you have it. It can be done right, however with how militaristic his design is, it's a real big slide towards the nazism then I'm sure you meant to go.

Apologies for the long paragraph, I just thought it might be a good idea to inform you on this as I'm sure it was unintentional but it's good to have these in mind when designing red leader.

heya! totally understand the concern; there are lots of factors to consider when taking the approach i did and i understand the risks ive taken in making the choices i did with it

regarding the hat: there really werent any intentions to model it on anything other than the universal generals/captains cap, since i figured the line to be crossed in terms of dogwhistles was the skull as well as the eagle symbol that distinguishes nazi caps from other militaries'

the color scheme is something i took into consideration more carefully for the exact purpose of avoiding resemblance with anything considered fashy, while still following the goal of using the original red leader design as reference (which is why i chose to include his old blue(greenish now) army coat and introduce new colors in the form of badges/ribbons/pins/tassels to expand the palette of his uniform)

if its any help, the image im trying to evoke is that of the british royal artillery + the modern norwegian army

🤍There’s a bit of a difference between Nemo during her time with the Jackpot Crew, and Nemo as you see her in these pictures. Whenever the Jolly Roger on her thigh is present, it means that Nemo is the Mecha of the WB Crew and the Jackpot Crew is long gone; sent to a gruesome demise caused by a chain-reaction of unfortunate events.

🤍Nemo has a few things left from her family, such as the “Omnis” on which she worked with her big brother. Or the steering wheel which Jax, the Jackpot pilot, gifted to her. She still carries some equipment she once borrowed from Jango and Ben is still at her side; resembling her trusty droid-sidekick.

🤍What Nemo also has left of her former home is a wardrobe with a quantum field to store the endless amounts of fashion the twins designed for her. Even with the Jackpot Crew gone, their couture is lit and lives on! *pls insert sad noises here, I can’t even*

Does that mean the little fur onesie is disposable?? I hope not. I'd rather just have both outfits.

That said, the designs are cute. I'll wait to pass judgement until I actually see one. I'm really excited about the zebra girl.

The size isn't mentioned, but the dolls look like minis to me and the non-flocked outfits look like the same rubbery plastic used for minis.

watching Sam play Screed: Viking Time and I have. Questions. about Asgard. to whit:

why must people always paint Loki as a generic villain? he's not a generic villain! he's a trickster! he's an Anansi kinda guy! he talks his way into trouble and then talks his way out! he's not even a villain he's just not always on the Asgardian side and he often Causes Problems On Purpose but he also...fixes them. for Asgard. idk it annoys me it's like always putting Hades as a villain in Greek stories it's like nah he's just a Different Kind of Guy

minor gripe but at one point Thor yells 'Jotunheim scum!' and can I just say that's like me running into battle against these guys yelling 'NORWAY SCUM! DENMARK BASTARDS!' like. I know you know the adjective is Jotun because you keep saying it.

Speaking of Greek stories I see we ran out of time on the design side and had to dip back to some Odyssey stuff because BOY HOWDY is this a Mediterranean looking Asgard. where exactly the fuck did all these fluted stone columns with Tuscan capitals come from? what's with the big courtyard with a geometric pool? why are there what appear to be sheets of lapis lazuli in the walls? why is there literally a Greek ruin in part of Asgard? there's these statues along the Bifrost and not only are they mounted on Doric columns and in classical contraposto they are literally wearing chitons and Corinthian helmets.

there's no longhouses! there's no wooden buildings! there is one (1) stave church style building and as Sam says it looks like it was made in the Sims, like someone had a sense of what they wanted it to look like but all the wrong building blocks. it's all stone columns with, at best, some knotwork patterning slapped on (over fluting, which is wild, even in architecture where Greek style columns are appropriate you usually pick BETWEEN fluting and pattern work, and I would be much more up for giving them a pass if they used a Tuscan pillar shape but put knotwork on. like really for a Norse style stone columns would be better squared off (or, mostly, not there) but if they needed stone columns and arches I could close my eyes and pretend if they used like. Romanesque pillars and rounded arches like 11th and 12th century cathedrals (even though the game is set in the 830s). but they're doing this very kind of High Classical thing with a very thin and half-assed Medieval Norse skin slapped over bits of it in a way that didn't really get popular in Northern Europe for like another 600 years and idk if it ever really took off in Norway (idk much about Norwegian architecture tbf). which makes me think they literally just retextured and rearranged a bunch of assets from Odyssey which is a shame because designing an Asgard setting is such a fun design project where you could really explore some unrealistic extremes with wooden-style structures. but no. it's Greek.

and the thing is, ok. with the Greek theming in Asgard. I know it's only happened because the game was rushed out, but like the conflation of Norse and Greek has some very 😬 unintended implications wrt how much a lot of the people who are Very Into The Surface Level Aesthetic of both cultures are. how to say. fashy white supremacists peddling the myth of some unified White Western Culture where both Ancient Greek and Medieval Norse cultures feature heavily. and if I was. making a game about Norse history and mythology. I would personally be being Very Wary of feeding the fash bc white supremacists looooooove their imagined version of Manly Viking Alphas.

Fig 2) The Rodlo symbol was designed by a woman who was part of the Polish minority population in Germany, she went to a Sokol (also Scouting!!!) gymnasium, she got a scholarship to study with Wladyslaw Skyoczylas and other modernist naive folk-revival painters at the school of fine arts in Warsaw, she survived the war, she got into this bizarre movement of neo-pagan anti-clerical pan-Slavist ‘nationalism’ that confirms every single thing I said in my undergrad thesis, she wants to take these symbols back from Hitler and stress the uniqueness of the Polish-German border regions that are neither like, fashy Catholic nationalist Poland nor fashy-flavor Germany, unfortunately that’s not how history or visual semantics work. She says it’s ‘rod’ plus ‘godlo’ (pretend it’s a liquid l) but it’s rodnoverie, we know what you’re about, Joasia--or rather, if you have to give a paragraph-long disclaimer every time you present your lovingly-rendered symbol, you gotta just let it go once it reaches critical mass and recognize that that your defensive disclaimers come across as “my t-shirt is raising a lot of questions that are answered by the shirt.” Anyway. This Harcerstwo troupe named after...the Harcerstwo movement that became a WWII paramilitary and subsequently Catholic anticommunist movement adopted it as their symbol. They’re from a small town in the Katowice region and they are. Well. If you don’t want everyone to think you’re fascists then maybe don’t be a paramilitary organization with a Hitler Youth lite flag (if you put the Rodlo on the Polish flag...it’s...it scans as the swastika on the...they know! They’re not oblivious, they do 500 WWII memorial actions per year!). And don’t have your scouts swear fealty in military fatigues while doing the seig heil to the Slavic Hitlerjugend flag in the woods. Ya dig. Their website is like “why are our enrollments declining :(”

This is spurred by my social anxiety, and your very well written and interesting post about the insidiousness of the ROP critiques. So ignore if you want.

I’m someone who has not watches the show. I definitely had the initial aggressive reaction of Amazon is Evil don’t touch MY 2nd Age!!!😡

I decided to see if I changed my mind based on tumblr osmosis, and hold off on watching dependent on if I liked what I saw.

I personally liked what I saw of the dwarves and the Nùmenor designs and casting. Like I’d have enjoyed a beard on Disa but otherwise she looks awesome and I have no complaints whatsoever about how Nùmenor looks.

But I have a visceral (shallow and petty) negative reaction to Elrond, Gil-Galad, Finrod, and Celebrimbor’s faces. The “just some guy” complaint.

Is that racist and fascist? Like I know it’s nitpicky and petty, but I don’t want to buy into the toxic conservatism, you know?

hey friend, thanks for asking, always happy to discuss rop in good faith!! the casting of elrond, celebrimbor, and gil-galad is something i've seen a smattering of criticism about, so you're not alone. and i genuinely don't see disliking the casting as a problem (esp not related to anything racist/fashy since they're all white dudes playing white dudes lol!!) but honestly, i'd suggest watching the show and seeing their performances, since it'll give you a far better picture of who the characters are than just in still images/gifs.

i was not sold on robrond (robert elrond) for a long time, because i kinda thought he looked like peter pan--till the culmination of his storyline with durin. then i was 100% fucking SOLD because of the performance and chemistry. that made me reappraise the casting, which imho is GREAT for a young elrond still figuring out his place in the world. short hair and all—i feel like there's a distinct possibility we'll get long hair elrond in future seasons :)

similarly with celebrimbor. i know silm celebrimbor and popular fanon interpretation is very different from charles edwards celebrimbor. but over the course of the show, it was the charm and energy that won me over. and... i get the thirst now. i do. his energy is incredibly charismatic.

gil-galad unfortunately isn't a huge part of s1 (though it's confirmed he'll be more major moving forward--bear mccreary is also composing a gil-galad theme for the soundtrack already!!) not everyone has been convinced, but i'll be honest there is a s1 episode 8 moment that actually really endeared him to me and now i'm similarly sold!

i think it's totally fair to have that initial petty/shallow negative reaction if you don't think they look right for elves/don't think they're hot (sorry 2 the actors lol!!!!) because that's a pretty personal metric anyway. but watching onscreen is a very different experience from just seeing still images and gifs. you might be surprised--i certainly was (...i've written the elrond x durin fanfic i wanted to see in the world and i am now SUPER attracted to robrond. rip my life.) let me know what you think, i promise i'm happy to receive asks and messages and i'm not scary :D
