So I just finished Daughter Of The deep and I must say that Ana Dakkar is propably one of the best protagonists that Rick has written. I really love her.
It's sad how underrated this book is. It has so many good relationships and it focuses on platonic ones!!! And the scenes with Ana and Dev are so so freaking good, my gods!!

Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan
Tumblr media
Daughter of the Deep is a fantastical book. Just when you thought Uncle Rick was done with writing books, he comes up with another bestseller filled with adventure and diverse characters. Daughter of the Deep is a retelling of the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by the French novelist Jules Verne. A fresh take on the classic novel filled with fun, adventure and pages smattered with marine biology is what this book is.
"The impossible is merely the possible for which we don't yet know the science"
The main character, Ana Dakkar is a South Asian, hailing from Bundelkhand, which means a lot to me, considering the fact that this is the first english book that I have read that stars an Indian character. This book features the classic writing style of Uncle Rick- a diverse set of characters, from those who are autistic to those who are Brazilian, an adventure that leaves you immersed and engrossed in the story and a splash of culture here and there, and that is only the least of it.
I finished this book in two days, and I desperately wanted it to last longer so that I could stay with Ana on the ship Nautilus for a little while longer. I could heap lots of praises on this book because it deserves it and then some.
For someone who enjoys Riordan's writing, or someone who wants to get started with his books, or is looking for a retelling based on a Jules Verne book, or is looking for a refreshing read that will warm your heart- you need not look further.
Rating: ★★★★★(5/5)

@dreamyourselfbackagain || For Hans
Tumblr media
Dev spent what free time he wasn’t studying or brooding out in the city.  Watching other people live their lives, seeing the magic and wonder this..crazy place was full of.  But he never really engaged himself. Much easier to just, avoid attention and live life than deal with connections.  He’d imploded his life once before he had no interest on doing that even accidentally ever again, so...skirting the edges of society felt right for him.
Leaning on the bar he was currently visiting, he cocked his head a little as he recognized the guy who stepped into the spot next to him to order. “Hey, Hans, right?  I’ve observed a few of your trials not too long ago.  You’re good.”

Tumblr media
Ana Dakkar is a freshman at Harding-Pencroft Academy, a five-year high school that graduates the best marine scientists, naval warriors, navigators, and underwater explorers in the world. Ana's parents died while on a scientific expedition two years ago, and the only family she's got left is her older brother, Dev, also a student at HP. Ana's freshman year culminates with the class's weekend trial at sea, the details of which have been kept secret. She only hopes she has what it'll take to succeed. All her worries are blown out of the water when, on the bus ride to the ship, Ana and her schoolmates witness a terrible tragedy that will change the trajectory of their lives.
But wait, there's more. The professor accompanying them informs Ana that their rival school, Land Institute, and Harding-Pencroft have been fighting a cold war for a hundred and fifty years. Now that cold war has been turned up to a full broil, and the freshmen are in danger of becoming fish food. In a race against deadly enemies, Ana will make amazing friends and astounding discoveries about her heritage as she puts her leadership skills to the test for the first time.

daughter of the deep is actually honestly truly one of rick’s best works. not really plot-wise (i’m still more partial to the greek/norse/egyptian works because i’ve spent more time w them 😔) but i mean more in terms of characters and their relationships. like first of all i LOVE that ana and gem were actually friends at the end??? there wasn’t much romance hinted btwn the two?? and like rick is known for his pairing of people so i found this amazing. BUT ALSO ANA AND DEV. i was IN LOVE w dev because of his antagonist arc. he reminded me so much of luke castellan because both of them thought they were doing their loved ones better by joining the “dark” side (for lack of better words) because they felt the side they were on was only failing them. but ana and devs relationship as siblings was just so good because you could FEEL her betrayal and how much she lost hope in him. anyway this was by far one of rick’s best works when you look at it in terms of characters & their relationships

I got a question
for everyone who’s read Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordian, can we talk abt Gemini?
like i love this boy but i’m gonna get this out of the way, why is he a mormon? like aren’t mormons kinda, notorious for being racist?
I’m gonna choose to ignore that (much like i assume rick will in future books) and when i write fics imma avoid that

Daughter of the Deep- Lives up to the Percy Jackson books?
Tumblr media
Hi! The Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan is his latest book and I’ll start off by saying that I loved it! It definitely lived up to my previous Percy Jackson expectations. I mean let’s be serious, it can never beat PJ but it is a great book!
Disclaimer- this book is in no way related to any of his previous stories and is NOT set in the Greek, Roman, Norse or Egyptian mythologic worlds. It is a standalone sci-fi book (I really want a sequel though). So any readers out there who want to read a book by Rick Riordan but have held off because they’re all long series, this book is for you! And any Rick Riordan book stans like me, I do not even need to convince y’all to read this book, just read it already.
The Plot/ Summary
Ana Dakkar is a freshman at Harding-Pencroft Academy, a five-year high school that graduates the best marine scientists, naval warriors, navigators, and underwater explorers in the world. Ana’s parents died while on a scientific expedition two years ago, and the only family she’s got left is her older brother, Dev, also a student at HP. Ana’s freshman year culminates with the class’s weekend trial at sea, the details of which have been kept secret. She only hopes she has what it’ll take to succeed. All her worries are blown out of the water when, on the bus ride to the ship, Ana and her schoolmates witness a terrible tragedy that will change the trajectory of their lives.
But wait, there’s more. The professor accompanying them informs Ana that their rival school, Land Institute, and Harding-Pencroft have been fighting a cold war for a hundred and fifty years. Now that cold war has been turned up to a full boil, and the freshmen are in danger of becoming fish food. In a race against deadly enemies, Ana will make amazing friends and astounding discoveries about her heritage as she puts her leadership skills to the test for the first time.
Why you should read Daughter of the Deep
I’ll start by gushing about the diverse representation. Rick Riordan’s books have always had great representation but this one’s diversity was just amazing. The fact that this book was written exclusively with a female protagonist and that she was of Bundeli Indian ancestry made me love it a lot more. From giving representation to brown characters, autism to an orangutan (no, I am not kidding), this book has it all!
This book is full of the dry humor that the author’s books are so famous for, the one that makes you laugh out loud and gives serious chapters the perfect balance. Those perfectly timed lines and comments made me burst out laughing more times than I can count!
This book has twists you never see coming and literally everything you want in a book. Also, can I just say I loved Top and Socrates so much. Rick Riordan’s writing made them larger than life and I loved that Top was an emotional support animal.
I’ve already raved about the diverse representation but can I just say- the addition of religion and that Ana was pure veg giving homage to her ancestry was such a small fact but so important and I love that it was mentioned.
This book is perfect for all ages! Captivating, thrilling and humorous, it has everything you can ask for.
I definitely recommend Daughter of the Deep and I hope you enjoy it if you do read it :)
“I decided staying up all night and finishing my book was more important than being mentally present today.”
