The frontispiece to the world’s earliest dated printed book, the Chinese translation of the Buddhist text the Diamond Sutra. This consists of a scroll, over 4.8 meters long, made up of a long series of printed pages. Printed in China in 868 CE, it was found in the Dunhuang Caves in 1907, in the North Western province of Gansu.

From scratching to inking to printing (and now swiping), here's a whistle stop tour through different writing tools from history: 📝

Over 5,000 years ago in Mesopotamia, the earliest material used to write on was clay.

Damp clay could be formed into a tablet and drawn into with a stylus (probably made from cut reed).

Clay tablet held by the British Museum.

Ink was first used in Egypt as early as 3,200 BC.

Across Asia, ink was made from carbon (soot) mixed with gum or gelatine to make it stick.

And as time went on in Europe during the Middle Ages, people started used a quill pen (made from feathers) rather than reed.

By the 8th century, people in China were cutting text into wooden blocks to make prints with – known as xylography.

This copy of the Diamond Sutra is the world's earliest complete and dated printed book.

Fast forward a few hundred years, we have the introduction of the typewriter and the much-loved QWERTY keyboard in the late 1800s.

The big leap to our present-day technology began in the 60s, with computers being used for writing itself.

Te-ch’ing says, “[…] the birth, the appearance, and the perception of all beings are a fiction. Since they are fictions, beings do not really exist. Only our delusions exist.”

  P.77:

The term nirvana originally referred to an extinguished fire. In Buddhism, it is used to describe the condition that exists when the Three Fires of delusion, desire, and anger are extinguished.

  P.78:

Wang Jih-hsiu says, “Nirvana is the place where we put an end to the round of birth and death and escape the wheel of endless rebirth. It is truly the greatest and most wonderful of places. But it does not mean death. […] By complete nirvana is meant ultimate liberation beyond which there is nothing else.”

Lin-chi says, “To practice charity is to give everything away. This means to get rid of perceptions of self, being, life and soul, sorrow and delusion, possession and renunciation, love and hate. Asanga says, “Cling not to self-existence, reward or karmic fruit. Guard against not giving or giving for a lesser goal.”

Objects are manifestations, mirages, or signs of things that never quite appear in their entirety, because none of them is ultimately real but only perceived to be real. When we perceive a person or a thing, we perceive something that exists is space and time as a combination of visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile, and cognitive elements. But upon closer analysis, each of these elements tuns out to be constantly changing and impossible to isolate from other elements. Thus, nothing is real. Still, we can’t let go of the larger, supposedly unchanging entity that we imagine exists somewhere beyond the horizon of our sensory faculties. And yet such an entity never quite appears. But the reason that it never quite appears is because it is an illusion whose reality we extrapolate by combining elements that are themselves no more real than the illusion to which they contribute. Thus, a perception of an object is a delusion of an illusion. For if the object itself is not real, how can the perception of it be real?

Chi-fo says, “All objects are illusions. To be attached to an object is to be attached to an illusion. Once you stop being attached to objects, you will not be affected by illusions. And once you are not affected by illusions, you will no longer be subject to sansara [life and death], and your pure original body will appear by itself.”

“Then Universally Good also said to the assembly, ‘In the land masses of this ocean of worlds are seas of fragrant waters, as numerous as atoms in unspeakably many buddha-fields. All beautiful jewels adorn the floors of those seas; gems of exquisite fragrances adorn their shores. They are meshed with luminous diamonds. Their fragrant waters shine with the colors of all jewels. Flowers of all kinds of gems swirl on their surfaces. Sandalwood powder settles on the bottom of the seas. They emanate the sounds of Buddhas’ speech. They radiate jewellike light. Boundless enlightening beings, holding various canopies, manifest mystic powers causing the adornments of all worlds to appear therein. Stairways of ten kinds of precious substances are set out in rows, with balustrades of ten kinds of jewels surrounding them. White lotuses ornamented with jewels, as many as atoms in four continents, are spread over the waters, in full bloom. There are unspeakable hundreds of thousands of billions of trillions of banners of ten precious elements, banners of belled gauze of raiments of all jewels, as many as sand grains in the Ganges river, jewel flower palaces of boundless forms, as many as sand grains in the Ganges river, a hundred thousand billion trillion lotus castles of ten precious substances, forests of jewel trees as many as atoms in four continents, networks of flaming jewels, as many sandalwood perfumes as grains of sand in the Ganges, and jewels of blazing radiance emitting the sounds of Buddhas’ speech…”

--From book five “The Flower Bank World” in the The Flower Ornament Scripture (Buddhāvataṃsaka Sūtra), translated from Chinese by Thomas Cleary. The various sutras were originally composed in Sanskrit and compiled and translated into Chinese in the 5th century CE. Thomas Cleary’s English translation is based on the Chinese translation done by the Khotanese monk Shikshananda (652-710 CE), who translated it at the request of the Tang Empress. 

I stumbled upon this sutra in the back of a book that included a ‘glossary of buddhist terms’ while at a Zen meditation retreat. Flower cosmology? That sounds like my shit. Since I didn’t have my phone I wrote the name down on a piece of paper and slipped it into my backpack. It really is as incredible as I imagined it to be.

“In the Huayan school, the teaching of interpenetration is depicted through various metaphors, such as Indra's net, a teaching which may have been influenced by the Gandhavyuha chapter's climax scene in Vairocana's Tower. Indra's net is an infinite cosmic net that contains a multifaceted jewel at each vertex, with each jewel being reflected in all of the other jewels, ad infinitum. Thus, each jewel contains the entire net of jewels reflected within.”

i was looking at yukari's spell card "Phantasm, Foam, Shadow" and it got me wondering... hey, what the fuck does that mean. what do you mean foam.

well the japanese name "夢幻泡影" seems to be an idiom extracted from the diamond sutra, referring to the transient aspect of life and the impermanence of all things worldly. or, if you translate it literally, it means just that: "phantasm/dreams, foam/bubbles, shadow"

so why was it translated literally? beats me. honestly i don't know my way around japanese and can't really think of a proper translation. i've seen it as "Dreams and Visions in a Bubble" or just simply "Phantasmagoria", both of them sound pretty fitting to me. but it's not like we're gonna start calling it that now and besides, it's fun to just refer to it as "soap"
