first and foremost i should state that all of the bands were formed based off of certain vibes from real life bands (i had just finished reading where are your boys tonight. sorry <3) so some of the character traits / band groupings / names were slightly influenced by that. anyway <3

true blue: so. fall out boy has this thing about blue imagery in their songs. and as soon as that connection was pointed out to me i was like oh percy's band has to be the fall out boy equivalent. i did a bad job of actually making anything about the two bands actually line up in the canon of this fic. however you should know that percy and grover have an insane pete/patrick relationship. that didn't answer your question. true blue is a lyric in fob's ginasfs <3 i also fully stole fall out boy's evening out with a girlfriend to use as their debut album <3

psychopomp: the mcr equivalent. i think this will become more and more clear as the fic progresses. admittedly i was listening to a lot of hozier's new album during the planning stages of this fic. i also named the fic before i'd chosen all of the band's members i think, which is why there's the slightly strange combo of nico hazel lou and cecil. HOWEVER ive seen tons of people talk about how nico lou and cecil would get along great because all of their parents are chthonic deities (something something hermes used to be the one that ferried souls to erebos?? i think??) and i was also originally going to have a bit where all of the members of psychopomp had former jobs as tour guides of some kind (orientation leader at college, museum tour guide, etc) bc of. psychopomps being the ones that guide you to the afterlife. you know. btw 'the basement demos' is a play on mcr's 'attic demos' but there are no characters in this series that own a place that has an attic so. basement it was!

past tense: this one is actually so funny and if i explain it itll ruin a joke thats set up in like. one of the last 5 chapters lol. i just wrote it last night <3 also past tense is a dashboard confessional equivalent hence the swiss army romance demo chapter title <3

new fall of rome: what's so funny is. unintentionally. this band is basically the panic at the disco equivalent. there is nothing in the fic that really supports this other than the fact that these guys got a record deal before ever playing a show. if i wasnt a coward i wouldve found a way to include the fob/patd connection but it wasnt going to work with the timeline so they get a rivalry instead. no spoilers <3 anyway band name chosen for new roman reasons but also it has a similar feel to like. new found glory you know. or the new london fire. it just had a real band name feel to it honestly its the band name im proudest of bc its the one that i think could most realistically be used lol

and a future throwaway mention of heroz journey which was just because dreamy wanted an easter egg <3

thats all of the core bands and i dont think i named any others??? but if i missed one feel free to ask <3 i also went way overboard and explained the whole band vibe instead of just the name but ive been waiting for so long for someobdy to aks me about this fic so <3 congrats you got So Much.

My favorite mcr album changed by day hour minute but i think i wanna talk about.....bullets....yeah bc bullets is so insane as just a sheer proof of concept, like an expression of raw skill and talent that was growing within this band. Rays guitar work alone was enough for it to make complete sense for major labels to be knocking at the bands door begging to suck them off and then they also had GERARD!!! And this was even before mikey really could write bass parts and frank was still not really in the band like its just ray gerard and geoff (and otter who wrote drum parts that r cool but also somehow out of his skill range? girl you MADE THEM). The fact that vampires not onky exists but was like the second or third song written? Like before mcr gerard either never wrote music or wrote shitty three chord throwaway punk that existed as an excuse to print band stickers and arent even good enough to save on tape and then you decide to start writing for real to cope with major national level trauma and your first song is SKYLINES??? and youre next songs are VAMPIRES and OUR LADY OF SORROWS???? and oh my god the vocals gerard gives on the albuk as a completely untrained vocalist who did one musical once in middle school and otherwise never sang professionally unless you count crazy kids song in breakfast monkey. and then you hear the vocals on fucking vampires???? Like gerard doesnt exactly sing like celine dion on bullets but the raw harmony work and ability to PERFORM and really stretch the emotions of a song and do whatever strange or vulnerable thing is needed to sell the track. Theres still few songs more affecting than early sunsets. Like i fully think gerard is probably the strongest vocalist in the emo scene just because of their ability to completely and utterly sell you on the songs emotions (not just anyone can sing im not okay and get away with it) and thats before all the developing technical talents both already present like how gerard can just toss a melody onto a track without thinking about it or the fact gerard did a lot of the base writing for mcr while fucking barely knowing guitar how did that even work girl. Like i havent even mentioned the lyrics??? How do you. Like you can tell both that gerard never learned how to write songs and also that gerard listens to so much music that he can just fake it anywayyheres like 2 songs with actual choruses on the album and neither of them are the self proclaimed pop song h4h which opens with a queen riff?????? ans then is like a hardcore version of a beatles pop song????dont talk to me about drowning lessons. deomolition lovers!?!?! half of these songs are just poems that gerard hammered into songs and theyre so like. genuinely so incredible and they work??like the album works! as a cohesive piece! it coheres!

and thats the first album. Id say my favorite ts album is probably evermore though i might actually have less to say on it just bc i havent had it since 2015. Evermore is just so....ANGSTY!!! it feels like a complete fulfillment of what she was exploring on folklore with the fictional framing devices and keeping the songs clearly personal while also removing herself in a way she never really has before. It feels like a level of introspection through art that taylor has always been both pushing towards and shying away from because too much introspection or strangeness or even pulling away from the diaristic idea too much never worked with where taylor was at with her career. Evermore had a new collaborator, and the massive success of folklore as well as the continued quarantine gave her both an unprescedented level of artistic isolation personal confidence and professional security that allowed her to just go "fuck it" and write fucking. cowboy like me and dorothea and coney island and closure and she GOT AWAY WITH IT!!! like the albums been out for 3 years or something like that and I still feel like i havent fully processed its existence despite listening to it constantly. It truly felt like she was unshacked and was able to write about herself while also completely pulling away from any sort of literal Truth and going crazy with concept and the way she writes feels so unconstrained from the rules she would sometimes set for herself, it felt like a natural evolution from the freedom she felt jumping into the lover era but its past the honeymoon phase and like it is pop music but its also not scared to be...not pop music if that makes sense? She really fully settles into folk as a genre for the first time and it lets her writing flourish. Songs with no choruses songs with barely any structure at all lyrics that stretch at the ends of verses and fun bouncy wordplay and just allowing herself into a characters life and seeing how it fits her. She has some straight up ren faire tracks on here liek willow is just a collection of similies and metaphors she likes smushed together over a lute and its so GOOD. It feels like she was allowed to really live in adulthood as a woman in her early thirties who creates art because she loves it and because it keeps her alive ALSO proof that she needs to keep collaborating w new ppl bc whenever she does you can feel her pushing herself harder and she becomes so willing to try these new kind of weird things that she may have never tried otherwise aughhhh!!!! i didnt even talk about coney island!!!! I love how moody and dour the whole project is it feels like November where fall drags you into a cold unforgiving winter and you're just trying to survive with your sanity and any of your personal relationships intact. its so!!! tbh its SO new england also which makes me biased. ok thats all

Sorrow - IAMX. ive been obsessively into IAMX recently to the extreme. for months. and i love soooooooo so many songs of theirs. but this song? Sorrow? it's the one that did it for me. I Come With Knives was the initial one that kicked this off, but going to Sorrow is what made me like "man i DESPERATELY need to listen to more of their music". NOT my very first IAMX song, that title belongs to Volatile Times, which ive known for like some ten years :p but only recently listened to more of their music and i have NOT looked back. as a bonus Sorrow reminds me a lot of ITNL Vash. perhaps part of the fixation on it lol

Nothing Personal - Des Rocs. picking a favorite song from him was nearly impossible bc im obsessed obsessed obsessed with his music. legit last year on my spotify wrapped all of my top 5 songs were his. OBSESSED. 'A Real Good Person In A Real Bad Place' is still undisputedly one of my fav albums EVER & the reason for that top 5 songs thing. but Nothing Personal is the first Des Rocs song i ever heard & what made me go "Oh my God???" & it still makes me lose my total shit when i listen to it lksdjflskjdf. honorary mention to Why Why Why, which was the other one i considered for him. also love that shit sooo much.

I Never Told You What I Do for a Living - My Chemical Romance. just so you know picking a single favorite song for MCR was near impossible. so much of their music makes me absolutely insane in the best of ways & picking just ONE?????? impossible. but i chose this one bc it's one that makes me EXTRA lose my shit anytime i listen to it. like fucking Belting it out. this one's The One. i can't give you special mentions for MCR bc there are too many. too fucking many. god i still love MCR so much

Armageddon - Blue Stahli. fucking love Blue Stahli's stuff, it's SOOO fun to listen to, & Armageddon probably really is my fav of theirs. i end up just jumping along to this song so much. it's a jumping song !!! so much fun to listen to !!!! also really paints a picture of me that a fav song of mine is just "Armageddon, come come and get it! Armageddon, baby!" the whole The Devil album is soooooooooo much fun & also an album i had a Mood for. back in uhh oct 2021 i wanna say. around there. special mentions for Takedown, Kill Me Every Time, and Power Outrage (this last one especially, OH MAN this also makes me lose my shit in the best of ways)

Mr. Fear - SIAMES. in a dramatic tone change from the other choices, i really am quite fond of SIAMES's music. it's my chill music. & this song specifically is sooooooooo full of longing and wistfulness. it's the first one of theirs i listened to & it's so......... waaaaaaaaaaaaa.. special mention to Brothers, which i very nearly chose bc im obsessed with that song too, but Mr. Fear has had my heart in a chokehold since i first listened to it Years ago. had to answer that one.

uhm. there are 5! additional special mentions to Capricorn by Xan Griffin, Maniac by Stray Kids, and Lovesong by TXT, which are all individual songs i've had MASSIVE obsessions with in the past. the Repeat On End kinds of songs. im being a bad STAY by not including Stray Kids in the favorite bands list but i havent been listening to their music as much lately. feeling these top 5 much more rn

saturday again no problem (a tuesdaypost retrospective)

sort of mixed feelings about this one bc, as we have previously chatted about, the august 2021-august 2022 period was one of the worst twelve-month periods of my life.

however! this year brought like six new tuesdaypost initiatives from other people (please shout at me in the comments or by DM bc my brain is broken and i don't remember all of you) and i DO want to take a look back at some media i enjoyed.

here are all the tuesdaysongs plus Permanent Peace by Jack de Quidt, who is not on spo/tify. this year gave me albums by: joywave, alt-j, unloved, scene queen, new doja cat, a bunch of junie and the hutfriends singles, and the gleeful insanity of the mcr tour. VERY good musical year imo

this historically has been one of the more fallow categories, bc there is a level of background pain where it is quite difficult for me to read and viddy gaem is a better distraction.

could have sworn i read three cowboy novelizations this year but i can only find evidence that i read the sabata and red river novelizations. i have mixed feelings about the execution of Tom Lin's The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu and Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Gods of Jade and Shadow but do not regret reading either.

no particular comics or manga stand out in my fallible, forgettable brain this year. i am excited for the ongoing light novel and manga adaptation of Otherside Picnic but that's just from watching the anime

happy that letterboxd is doing part of the thing i wanted (getting me to watch more movies) deeply annoyed i have fallen into the trap i was afraid of. this trap is: I Want To Make The Number Go Up and am now reluctant to watch tv bc i can't log it on letterboxd and it doesn't "count". fucking hate to gamify my own leisure like this!!!!

the very good thing about letterboxd is that my friends have excellent taste, and letterboxd reminds me which of the eight billion django knockoffs i have and have not seen.

GOD was january a good movie month. the below screenshot is movies i watched for the first time this year and really liked/have stuck in my head in some way, and 3/8ths were from january. thank u library streaming service kanopy

see letterboxd has taken such a big chunk of my Moving Images time that it was hard to remember that both peaky blinders and killing eve ended this year!!! and i rewatched several seasons of adventure time! and most of the first season of DS9! and i am now in the process of watching the vampire interview show with my sister!!!

got a handmedown switch!

this year was mostly big open worlds that didn't require a lot of complex thought from me, or if they did require some puzzle solving it was in really short bursts. lion's share of the hours this year went to fallout 4, breath of the wild, and pokemon scarlet. i really loved junk shop telescope, depanneur nocturne, and card cowboy.

honorary mentions to phone games that kept my anxiety to a low simmer while in a lot of doctor's offices.

game im most hype for is probably the spooky fishing game Dredge, but i don’t think we’ll get that until early 2024. if anyone says the words "fallout 5" next year i will lose my mind bc i would like another one of these stupid motherfuckers before i die.

i think i'm going to mourn the old lair until i die.

i am deeply, deeply unhappy with how this year went both personally and professionally. made an apartment cozy. lost the cozy apartment. cleaned a whole bunch of metal. framed a lot of things. bought a whole bunch of furniture. still have moths.

hate to leave this post on this note however i really should have died twice this year and didn’t. so im trying to be nice to myself about the rest of it.

I don't want it to be but the "he gets to die a saint but she will always be the whore" line could be about him and his wife. The fandom worships him but hates his wife (she really doesn't make it difficult tbh). But that idea paired with the previous lines in that verse... he doing ok?

The song is clearly autobiographical, and I can't really think of any other "shes" in his life that would make sense. Of course we don't really know what's going on behind the scenes. Maybe he's got a secret mistress.

the she will always be the whore thrown in there throws me for a loop!!! like above any other line in the song. like the whole song is so clearly about him and his time in mcr and also post-mcr and like. really one of the few mcr songs that i can fully sus out exactly what its about on a real level.

but i dont get that line!!

in the car today on one of my listens i thought about this ask and i wondered if it could be about lynz. 'he gets to die a saint but she will always be the whore' being like the way ppl literally worship gerard and think he's a god but certain fans have always hated lynz, even before she was Problematique™️ as fans of attractive men can honeslty often react to them getting a new partner who they view of as "stealing" him from them. so like there has always been this dichotomy of how they viewed the two members of one partnership.

i mean there are also a lot of fans who mindlessly worshipped lynz as soon as they got together based solely on the fact that they worshipped gerard. but i wouldn't doubt that the ones hating on her were louder, at least to his perception.

so honestly i could see that line being about her. but as far as the context of that line in the rest of the song it just doesnt make sense to me? bc she's (whoever the whore is) not mentioned at all in the rest of the song. but it could be just a commentary on another aspect of what fame and public perception did to him.

oh wait tho....now im thinking about it in the context of the lyric that comes before it

'and if by his own hand his spirit flies take his body as a relic to be canonized' obviously this is a reference to suicide. i wonder if the whore line is commenting on the fact that if he had done that. ppl would blame lynz instead of trying to support her through a time like that. bc i mean. and thats the thing like people for ages have been saying theyre getting divorced she treats him like shit this and that. and im specifically thinking of the dumpster fire of his insta comments before he turned them off. it was allllll shit about his shitty wife and when are you getting divorced. so if this song was in fact written pretty recently like that video of them in the studio suggests. maybe that was on his mind and maybe those comments, because hes been very offline for a while, were his first clue-in to how a lot of the fandom views her, and thats affected him and like. idk it does make sense kind of to me now.

im not gonna claim thats absolutely what its about but. i think it could fit.

hey!!! anon that asked for mcr recommendations and advice on getting past the “missing out” feeling, back again!! first of all i wanted to say thank you sm for writing such a big response and giving me so many helpful recommendations!!!! all of this really means a lot to me and is extremely reassuring, so thank you <33 and i 100% agree that despite my regret of not getting into the band earlier this is definitely the best time to be an mcr fan based off of everything that’s been going on!!!! it is unbelievably heart-warming to see how happy and healthy everybody in the band is right now!! and seeing mcr tumblr go completely off the walls over cheergate recently was such a fun time and god did it make me Feel. i just remember going through an abundance of posts that night from trans/nonbinary people talking abt how much it meant to them and how happy they were for gerard, and for the same reasons it meant a lot to me as well. ALSO omg three cheers for revenge enjoyer hello!!!!! i literally found a three cheers shirt the other day and immediately impulse-bought it bc i knew i’d be dedicating myself to mcr’s discography very soon and that album cover is one of my favourites ever!!!! the album cover of all time (real). not to mention three cheers has the ghost of you on there my babygirl my sweet cheese my rotten soldier <33 oh and i listened to sleep for the first time recently as well????? mass casualties. i think sleep, mama and the ghost of you are my current faves pre-full-discography dive!! and on that note i’m so curious to know what ur fav mcr songs are!!!! ok so first of all it was a b-side demo (cut from revenge & released with i'm not okay) that had only been played live three times before - out of over a thousand live shows - and those three times were all back in 2003. it's a HUGE fan favourite song (bc its largely abt gender and mcr fandom is obsessed w gender lol) but the idea of them actually playing it live in 2022 is like. a dream. insane. might have started hyperventilating a little watching the stream and realising what was happening. honestly i kinda thought they'd forgotten it existed until frank mentioned it in an interview mere days before the us tour leg started (bc he loves to torment)

second of all did u listen to it? go listen to it. god it fucking rocks. maybe look up the lyrics too but im gonna mention most of them here anyway cause GOD. main themes are gender and alcohol which. yeah man fuck me UP!!! frustrating sidenote: the fandom ALWAYS talks about the heavy gender elements but i NEVER see ppl discussing how much about alcoholism it is?? it's in almost every line this song is literally drenched in the reek of stale booze i dont know why ppl just don't seem interested in engaging w that aspect.

revenge : BOMB album will say that. every single song is SO good<3 i never told you will always be mine mine and forever mine! but i really like every single song in there, jetset life is good too, helena and ghost of you also win! oh no THEYRE ALL GOOD also best demo is i never told you. "covered in blood and piss" forever.

tbp is my second favorite album ever, the theatrics, the feeling, the instrumentality....... <3 i dont love you, the sharpest lives, mama and sleep go by far to be my adored most repeated ones, but cant really choose! mcr you put a curse on me

I feel like it always takes me forever to respond... which is on brand for me cause I take ages to respond to everyone but honestly that's a character flaw and should work on that... anyway, I'm sorry that you're not enjoying your classes that really sucks -_- class can be hard to get though even when you do like it but when you don't it's torture. And some my favourite mcr songs are bulletproof heart, mama, and sleep!! I'm glad that life is going better for you!! I'm doing pretty well!! I'm excited for halloween cause I'm gonna buy a big bag of candy and watch horror movies ^.^ I'm also going to another concert on Tuesday which is gonna be really fun!! I've seen this guy live before and he's a great performer so I'm really excited for that!! I'm also really happy cause I've wanted a vivienne westwood necklace for a long time time and now I can afford to get one 👀 im also kinda starting to question my secuality a little bit cause I've thought I liked guys forever but this guy asked me out and I got kinda grossed out and I realized that I only ever like men who are unattainable but whenever a guy actually asks me out (which honestly doesn't happen often 😔) I kinda get the ick... so I'm thinking maybe I only like women...? Idk but im not too worried about it it's just what's going on with me rn. Oh! And I always get oreo mcflurries they're my favourite!! What's going for you? i took so long getting back because i wanted to listen to the mcr songs: i think bulletproof heart is alright, and i actually really like mama, i used to listen to that too it was fun revisiting, music is so cool how you can like hear a song after a while and sort of go back to those times :) and sleep is really good i like that song a lot ! thank you for the recs <3

how was your concert? seeing artists again is so fun, i’ve only seen one artist more than once but it was so so so fun, especially seeing like the difference in the crowd too, there was so many more people the second time around !

ohhhh which vivienne necklace are you eyeing? the pearls are so so so beautiful, they have this knuckle duster ring i’d wanted for a while but now that i’ve been saving for it i can’t find it anymore 👎

✰ vinny loves all the koRn albums (up until 2005) especially follow the leader since it was the first album he heard by them and has several shirts for the band such as this

✰ this is the one character i’m tossing the movie time period out for since obviously there wasn’t any metal music in the 60s, so, we’re setting this in the 2003-2006 era since that’s when tommy’s movies were made

✰ another thing before we get started, i’m fully aware of the history of mayhem & burzum and if you don’t i encourage you to look it up read up on it since it’s very interesting let alone important to understand the black metal genre (and to pay respects to dead & euronymus)

✰ so, because of the hectic household, tommy really needs something to drown it all out while he’s in the basement and when he was introduced to black metal and death metal, it was perfect (and yes i know some black metal bands are satanic and i don’t hc that tommy listens to it for that reason)

✰ his go-to bands are mayhem, cradle of filth, cannibal corpse, a little opeth, and possibly dying fetus

✰ honestly, he’d probably pick and choose albums he puts on his playlist if he liked one song so his playlist(s) would be long enough to listen to it at least twice in a day while he works

✰ [modern hc] tommy would probably fall asleep to something like xasthur’s screaming at forgotten tears

✰ 100% owns a mayhem tank top/muscle tee and wears it when he wants to get out of his “work” clothes plus he thinks the art on it is neat

✰ much like vincent, he’s constantly told to turn down his music. hoyt’s always yellin’ at him and callin’ him names since the music is “distracting” him from his chores when really it’s what’s keeping him going
