Disney Games and Empty Clip Studios have remastered the '90s side-scroller Disney Gargoyles. The remaster features enhanced visuals, animations, and SFX, achievements, gameplay rewind, wide-screen presentation, and the ability to toggle between the new graphics and the classic 16-bit mode.

Mako x Gargoyles. My Brain Went Places.

As I had mentioned in a previous blog, it's been nearly twenty years since LoK ended. It's also been nearly thirty years since Disney's Gargoyles cartoon ended. With the new Gargoyles comic in monthly publication, and the release of the remastered Genesis game, my brain went places. I've seen artwork of the ATLA gang as gargoyles and pondered if the same had been done with the LoK characters. I found some images of Korra as a gargoyle but no one else. So, of course, I had to draw Mako as a gargoyle. And with that comes the story of how it happened, etc. I have an overall concept for this, but it currently remains unfinished. Maybe someday I will complete it.

The first thing Mako noticed when he stirred was the familiar smell of rotting food and decay. The source of the pungent odor was a pile of black bags that all but covered him. Waking up in an alley full of trash wasn't a completely new experience for him, he just wished he knew how he had gotten there. The last thing he remembered was talking with Bolin in the kitchen, then he suddenly felt sick to his stomach. After that, it was as if the floor had swallowed him whole.

He groaned as he shoved the bags off of him. His entire body felt weird, heavy, as if all his clothes were stuck to his skin. As he shifted in the bags, the reason he felt strange began to reveal itself.

"What the-?"

What should be his foot was instead a long arch with three thick talons on the end. The claws wiggled as he flexed his "toes." Next, he examined his hands. The slender digits had been replaced by thick, rust-colored claws similar to his toes.

"What's happened to me?"

He grabbed onto a nearby wall and wobbled to his feet. The unfamiliar limbs were like walking on tip-toes. As he took several cautious steps, something moved in his peripheral. He quickly turned to see, but whatever it was, moved with him. Was it attached to him? He reached over his shoulder and felt something protruding from his back. Carefully, he felt along the appendage until he could pull it into view. It was a wing with a long spine down it's red-hued center.

"Wings?" He needed a mirror. He needed to know what else had happened to him. A nearby window provided him a reflective surface, and he gasped at the image that greeted him. It was his face, but the ears had been replaced by large lobes and a pair of horns curved over his dark hair. Even his eyebrows were gone, replaced by thick ridges that ended in small spikes. All of it the same rust color as his hands and feet.

He slapped his cheeks several times to wake himself. It had to be a dream. Nothing else made sense. The only other explanation was that the spirits had done this to him, but why? What reason would they have to turn him into such a monstrosity. His thoughts suddenly shifted to Bolin. Had the same thing happened to his brother? If so, he had to find him.

He scanned the streets beyond the alley. Bright lights illuminated people and vehicles as they passed. However, just like his body, they were similar to what he knew but different. The Satomobiles looked sleeker, more streamlined, and the people wore odd clothes. There was no way it was Republic City. It presented him with more questions than answers. Cautiously, he stepped toward the light. Hopefully, Bolin was nearby.

As soon as he hit the sidewalk, a shrill scream forced him to cover his ears.

"Monster!"

The alert sent any nearby pedestrians into a panic.

"Monster?" Mako stumbled backwards at the sudden accusation--and directly into traffic. Vehicles honked as he dodged them. At one point, he even managed to climb over the hood of a moving car. Luck carried him to the opposite side unscathed, but that wasn't the end of his troubles. The familiar sound of sirens reached his ears. Police. However, if the crowd's initial reaction to his appearance was any indication, they weren't coming to help him. Time to run. Unfortunately, he only managed a few steps before he tripped over his own tail.

"Dammit!" As he was getting back to his feet, he realized his new form seemed better suited to be on all fours. Whatever. At this point, he couldn't be concerned about his stature. The crowd continued to scatter as he lopped down the sidewalk like an animal in search of his brother.

Sorry for the pathetic background. It's a weak spot to be sure.
