The "finest Disney princes/men" debate always has these five as either the winner or the runner-up's 😂
This is kinda the female equivale to dudes discussing who's the best waifu in anime communities. We never reach a common ground because we all have different tastes!!! 😩🤭
Ok, but i love Iago's character arc over the course of the trilogy and tv series. He goes from Jafar's evil lackey to . . . technically no longer evil. He doesn't stop being greedy or lazy or selfish or pessimistic or cynical. He is still prone to seeing the worst in people and manipulating others to his own ends (tho it is more often then not a case of Iago's cynical viewpoint hitting a nerve and him exasperating the situation). The noble choice isn't his first option. It isn't even his second or third. But by the end there, if pushed hard enough, Iago would do the right thing even if it involved sacrifice. Iago did learn to care deeply about others.
I love how he was shown to have positive character growth, to go through a massive change and become a better person, but still be an extremely flawed individual.
I love how in the end he goes off with Cassim who had gone through a very similar character arc (giving up the treasure he'd spent his whole life searching for to save his son). In many ways they are two peas in a pod and they are perfect for each other.
no I don't know everything about Disney movies. For example. I've never bothered to look up what the heck Aladdin is saying after "ahead of my doom" in One Jump Ahead.
I think something that makes the Aladdin Sequels and Spinoffs better than other Disney Movie tie-ins is that there's a much stronger continuity than other "secondary" Disney media. This is even present in the Hercules Crossover Episode, which surprisingly makes more references to the sequels and the TV show than the actual movie:
Jafar is dead and complains about his "treacherous parrot", which is a reference to Return of Jafar, music from the TV show is reused and Aladdin's clothes and the fact he and Jasmine are now married is a reference to the King of Thieves.
Sadly, Disney only tends to reference the "main films" nowadays, if Princess Jasmine were to have a cameo in a TV show, then you can expect her to only reference events from the first movie, if at all.
Disney Princesses live in a weird realm.Ariel’s shifting between her mermaid and human forms,Naveen is still a frog,Rapunzel has the long blonde hair...
The scene in the Aladdin live-action remake where Genie warns Aladdin about how he must be careful about how he phrases his wishes is actually a more culturally accurate explanation of how making wishes to a djinn works as compared to the 1990s cartoon.
You see, djinn are Trickster figures (and often leaning toward malevolent ones at that). So if you leave any wiggle room for an alternate interpretation of your wish, they will take it.
The example Genie gives in the movie is a great depiction of this: "Make me a prince" is a very vague request that no djinn would be able to resist messing with. Genie's interpretation of the wish is one of the kinder ones -- literally making Aladdin a prince. But a more malevolent genie could simply turn him into a prince about to be deposed, or a prince whose kingdom is on the verge of being bankrupt, or any other number of things.
Djinn are so famous for reinterpreting wishes that in Brazil we have an entire genre of jokes all about people making vague wishes to djinn and having the wish come back to bite them in humorous ways.
Villain/ess Backstories for Jafar and his sister Nasira this time! (Nasira is from a 2001 video game called "Nasira's Revenge")
Jafar grew up on the streets with his twin sister Nasira, similar to Aladdin, but their experiences made hard and cruel, contemptuous of those who weren't willing or able to stab others in the back to survive, instead of becoming compassionate like Aladdin chose to be
They were eventually taken in as servants by a dark wizard called, Abanazar, who once had a genie in a ring but lost it, and was obsessed with finding a new genie, leading to Jafar's interest in them as well
Jafar and Nasira began learning magic by secretly observing Abanazar at work. He eventually caught them, but rather then throwing them out or turning them into toads or something he decided to hone their abilities, putting them to work stealing magical artifacts for him, with a mentality of "if they paid good enough attention in their lessons they'll survive, if they didn't they won't. And either way I won't be risking my neck so it's a win-win"
It was during one of these excursions that Jafar discovered his snake staff, an ancient artifact that even Abanazar didn't realize the full power of--until Jafar used it to learn all of the magical secrets Abanazar had kept for himself. After which Jafar "retired" his old teacher, no longer needing him.
Nasira prefered to work on the outskirts of society, feeling more free from the constraints placed on her as a woman, but Jafar desired the power and prestige that came from climbing the ranks, even if it meant he had to keep his magic secret or at least low-key, which is how/why he became the Grand Vizir, quickly rising through the political levels thru his mix of magic and malicious cunning
Iago used to be a normal parrot, Jafar bought him from a bazaar and infused him with magic to be his familiar, granting him the ability to speak
(There's a possibility that Abu was the result of a similar magical experiment. Not by Jafar but by some other magician who later lost him, thus explaining why Abu is much more vocal/intelligent then most animals. Possibly some of Jafar's residual magic rubbed off on Raja as well)
So I went to see Aladdin Jr. (Duel Language edition) at the local high school with the girls yesterday, and they got to watch me nerd out in real time because Jafar and Iago sang the song "Why Me."
The reason I was nerding out was because
youtube
I remember there being a live video of Jonathan Freeman singing it in preparation for his role as Jafar on Broadway, and I'm pissed off that I can't find it. Even more pissed off that the song wasn't performed on Broadway or included in the cast album.
Who do you think Jamil's middle school friend(s) are? I personally headcanon at least one of them to be Iago.
Iago and Mozenrath. I also think that there would be maybe a few others.
Iago to me was someone who's family worked for the Al asim family but unlike The vipers they didn't have the same power or influence.
Mozenrath i think is a year or two older than jamil and Kalim, and his family is the second most important in The scalding sands. He's friendly with Jamil but unlike Iago, he's jealous of him and Kalim. "I had yo sacrifice my arm you just got it naturally"
I headcannon Mozenrath having a signature spell that does some sand golums.
Was feeling fatalistic and depressed so i decided to sketch a bit of my favorite big blue lug. These turned out a lot better then i expected them too so i thought I'd share them with all of you.
Do you have a favourite quote from the Aladdin animated series or sequels?
The Genie: Give me another bill and I'll rip out your spine and floss with it.
(Mission Imp Possible)
Abnor Mal: But if I wanted to, could I still drive the elephant?
Abis Mal: Eh, what's a tyrant without a hobby?
(Lost and Founded)
Aladdin: Jasmine, I thought you were open-minded.
Jasmine: I am, I'm just not crazy-minded.
(Stinker Belle)
Abis Mal: Woah, boy!
Haroud: And might I add: Wow!
(The Prophet Motive)
Haroud: It's solid stone, see? Perfectly harmless. Now let's be a grown-up villian and stop jibbering and drooling.
(The Prophet Motive)
Haroud: How would YOU like to go on a treasure hunt? Just like Aladdin?
Abis Mal: Okay!
Haroud: Not you, sir. Them.
(Caught by the Tale)
The Sultan: Are you trying to make a fool of me, Iago?!
Iago: Now there's a challenge.
(Vocal Hero)
Fishmonger: Fresh Fish!
Saleen: Charlie?!
(Elemental my dear Jasmine)
Mozenrath: Get to work, follow the hand! Did, dig!
Sprite: Please! Sprites are worn out. Have a heart.
Mozenrath: If you insist! I'll have yours!
(The lost city of the sun)
