Dogs 4 Ever: Preparing for a New Puppy

Hi! If anyone here is expecting a new puppy, then this is the post for you! We'll talk about things you need, what to expect from a puppy/dog and some adorable name ideas for your expected furry friend!

It is easy to be unprepared for your expected pup. Some people think they are completely ready and prepared but actually, they're not. 

Here are some things you're going to need to obtain before your furry friend arrives to ensure they have a great first experience in their new home.

1. A dog bed.

2. A playpen. A puppy especially will need a place to go to calm down throughout the day when they get worked up, also for daytime naps.

3. A harness and leash. It is pretty much a guarantee that your puppy will pull on walks, and wearing a collar while doing so can have lasting damage on their airways. A harness will help avoid this dilemma and they can have a nice, healthy breathing system!

4. A collar and ID card. This is necessary not for walks, but for if your dog escapes it could potentially save their life. It should contain their name, and your number.

5. Food and water bowls. These are super easy to obtain; you can find them at most local grocery stores. Stainless steel bowls are the best, mainly because they can be cleaned easily. The bowls should be cleaned at least every two days.

6. Puppy food. If you want to switch food from what the breeder was feeding your puppy to a different brand, it's best to check with the vet. Most pet stores also have trained staff who are willing to help you. Furthermore, it's best to wean your puppy off of their other food gradually, so be sure to ask the breeder what brand they are feeding your puppy.

7. Lots of toys. These should include chew toys, soft toys, and any toys that make sound. Treats for chewing can also include include vegetable ears. These I highly recommend, because they are healthy, nutritious snack for dogs with sensitive tummies, and they are extremely good for your pup's dental health.

8. Poo bags. Your dog will use sooo many poo bags everyday, which is why you would be helping the environment if you bought your dog eco friendly, decomposable bags. You can purchase these in many places such as, Coles, Woolworths and even the $2 shop.

  9. A comb or brush for grooming. How often you brush your dog really just depends on the breed. However, you don't want to leave it too long, because brushing and combing spreads your puppy's natural oils throughout their body, reducing itching.

  10. Doggy toothpaste and toothbrush. There are many different types of doggy toothpaste and toothbrushes available but you need to find the right one for your dog. For most puppies it's easier to use a finger toothbrush as you can reach their back teeth even while they are squirming. If you brush your dogs teeth regularly as they get older you can gradually progress into a proper toothbrush. When your dog is a puppy it is also a better idea to brush their teeth using water instead of toothpaste however, a reliable brand for when they get older is, All For Paws Sparkle Dog Toothpaste. You can purchase this toothpaste at Pet Barn and it comes in many different flavours.

  11. Dog shampoo. Pet Barn is the best place to buy shampoo for your dog, it can be expensive but sells, good quality and reliably sourced items for your pup. One great brand for shampoo is Fido's, you can buy different shampoos specifically suited for your dog. For example, there is shampoo specially made for dogs with black or dark coats. However, I would highly recommend going with the flea shampoo as it will stop your pup itching like crazy.  

12. Flea and Tick tablets. Another essential item for your dog is treating them with tablets and ointments consistently. Your vet will inform you on what to get and how often you need to treat them.

Here are some things you need to think know before you get a puppy.

Are you ready for a puppy? Puppies are very time-consuming, and if you are living alone with a full-time job a puppy is probably not the pet for you. At 8 weeks, when you first get them, your pup will definitely not be ready to roam the house unsupervised.

What breed is right for you? This is not just a matter of choosing the cutest breed. You need to thoroughly research what breed is suitable for your home, family, and living arrangements. All breeds have different needs such as the amount of exercise, food, and training, so be sure to know a lot of information about your particular breed.
