4 different dwarven looks, but the same face. With a lot of focus on hair on the last three because I ended up loving the idea of dwarves using hair extensions/partial wigs that does not match their natural hair : ' D

Noldor Hair Headcanons (4/4)
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | On AO3
There isn’t anyone left who knows how to do Maglor’s Mourning Braids, but they are described in a lament for Fingon that’s still doing the rounds, so Elrond and Elros make their best try. That style is henceforth known as Elrond’s Mourning Braids (because Elros gets forgotten by the elves a lot after he dies, let’s not lie to ourselves).
A decade of nothing but Mourning Braids really hammers in that Elrond and Elros weren’t just hostages.
It doesn’t do a lot for their reputation, but they don’t particularly care.
Bit by bit, Elros adopts mannish customs after making his Choice, and even goes so far as to cut his hair above the shoulder. Elrond is pre-grieving his brother too much to be properly shocked about this.
(It’s still long enough to braid. It’s fine. It’s not like his brother is leaving him on purpose. Or rejecting him. Elrond knows that.)
Everyone thinks Elrond should wear his hair in the Sindarin custom but he refuses to give up his Noldor braids. Elros braids his brother’s hair until he leaves for Númenor.
Elrond and Gil-galad do each other’s hair through the Second Age. Because they’re the last of their family and the only ones to keep to the old traditions. Not at all because they’re close. Of course not. Wouldn’t be proper. (They spend two hours at it every morning alone in Gil-galad’s chambers.)
Elrond revives his Mourning Braids on his 500th birthday.
Celebrimbor learns about dwarven hair culture. It’s Very Different but kind of similar, in that fancy hairstyles are a status thing. (Or really, long hair/beard is a status thing and then you have to do something with it because otherwise it catches everywhere.)
Narvi isn’t in fact the first dwarf to touch elven hair, but that’s only because Finrod had a very extended concept of family.
Annatar magically braids his own hair, when he even bothers (his hair doesn’t even singe in the forge if it falls into the fire). This hurts Celebrimbor’s sensitivities, but he adapts to Annatar’s ways, and adapts again, and adapts, until he really can’t.
Sauron cuts off Celebrimbor’s beautiful dark braids full of dwarven beads and ties them to the spears of his personal guard. Elrond never quite manages to get that image out of his head.
At war again, Gil-Galad invents locs. Well, re-invents them really, because Silvan elves have worn them forever, but he’s the first Noldor to do it. (He has Fingon’s hair texture. Does that mean he’s Fingon’s son? Who knows. He’s not telling.)
It’s only after Gil-galad’s death that Elrond teaches himself how to braid his own hair.
He hates it.
But he won’t wear his hair loose.
(The first style he masters is Maglor’s Mourning Braids.) (It really shouldn’t be because it’s Intricate but Elrond is nothing if not stubborn.)
Imladris has a full salon, like the Noldor palaces of old.
It doesn’t get that much use, to be honest.
Erestor learns to braid really tiny braids into Glorfindel’s hair, so that he never wears his hair fully loose but it still looks like it’s loose. Everyone else thinks it’s ridiculous. Glorfindel thinks it’s the best thing. Elrond watches them with a knowing smile.
Celebrían wears her hair half-loose in the Sindar style until she marries Elrond. It takes him several years to find the strength to ask her to do his hair, but she lets him do hers and he sneaks in more and more braids until they settle on a mixed-style. When he finally allows her to do his hair, Celebrían makes her mother grumpily teach her proper Noldor braids.
Elladan and Elrohir only wear practical Sindarin braids for the day to day, but they delight in doing each other’s hair in complicated styles for feasts and ceremonies. Elrond cries the first time they accidentally replicate Maglor’s favourite hairstyle.
Arwen is a little gremlin who squirms out of her parents’ lap when they try to braid her hair. She’s also inherited even more of Melian’s hair than Elrond, so even when they manage to do a braid, it’s gone in a few hours.
It takes years after Celebrían sails, because they’re all grieving, but eventually Elrohir offers to do his father’s hair, and Elrond lets him. They don’t do it every day, but it’s a large step in their recovery process.
By the way, Thranduil’s thing for flower/leaf crowns isn’t a Sindar or Silvan practice, it’s just that he wanted to be Fancy but Not In a Noldor Way, thank you very much. He’s also very vain. His servants do his hair.
Little Estel is very cute, has very silky hair for a man, even of his line, and makes a great doll for the twins to play with. He likes his hair touched A Lot.
Arwen learns about that early on. She’s a very good silver smith. Aragorn now owns a lot of hair jewellery. He can’t make a braid to save his life, but that’s fine, because Arwen can’t wear them anyway.
In the North, he wears his hair like Elros, cut above his shoulders. Once he becomes King, he lets it grow to his waist. He’s the first Man since Tuor to casually wear his hair in elaborate Noldor braids. He accidentally sets a fashion.
Arwen also does Éowyn’s and Faramir’s hair regularly. The first time is for their wedding. Éowyn isn’t a fan of the unpractical Fëanorian styles, but the Nolofinwëan battle braids look incredibly good on her.
Wandering on the coast for two ages, Maglor no longer does anything with his hair. It doesn’t enjoy the salt at all.
When Elrond finally finds him, he almost has to cut it all off. Instead, he spends weeks carefully untangling and moisturising Maglor’s hair until he can finally braid it in the old style for him. Maglor cries.
Elrond cries too. He cries even more when Maglor sits them down on the floor and braids his hair like he used to.
They sail together with the other Ring bearers, and there’s a lot more crying when they find Celebrían, Gil-galad and Maedhros waiting for them together.
Celebrían is wearing her hair in one of the Fëanorian styles that can be done one-handed.
Galadriel isn’t entirely happy about that, but she sees Finrod and forgets about it.
There’s some more crying.
Fingon is also there (the amount of gold in his hair is a bit blinding, not that Elrond will ever tell him) and also wearing a one-handed braided style.
There are some fights over who gets to do Elrond’s hair in the next few weeks.
Celebrían wins most of them, because she’s inherited Galadriel’s viciousness, but she lets everyone have a turn.
Elrond would like to know why he doesn’t have a say in it.
(He does. They would never touch him if he didn’t want to. They’re just very happy to see him.)
He does go to visit Elwing and Eärendil in their tower, and he goes with his hair down, because he’s a peace-maker at heart.
But in Tirion, he always sports the most complex hairstyles, just barely coming short of overshadowing the High King’s (mostly because his hair is still too silky for it to hold well), because his family all want to outdo each other.
He earns the reputation of being the most beloved of all the Noldor.
It’s not wrong.

super happy to see more of aeres! she's such a fascinating oc (and hella cute, loving the new hairstyle), i was wondering if you've ever talked about her family, especially since i (think) i saw that she has the noble background? does that have any impact on her interactions with the other companions?
omg thank you so much!! she does indeed have the noble background :) her relationship with her family is pretty complicated but for now i'll just say that she was very much the Spare re: The Heir and the Spare, so as the youngest child she was eventually sent off to join the clergy of a god that was Not Tempus. But a few gnolls, two dwarven clerics and a roadside battle later she found herself defecting from her parent's plans and instead becoming a cleric of Tempus.
so while aeres is pretty disconnected from her family and receiving nothing in terms of money or any kind of support (since this was all conditional on her doing as she was told but her story is very much about finding in meaning in what she does and maintaining her own autonomy) she still presents as pretty aristocratic in some ways but mellowed out and became coarser in others. she's a fluid creature who's just as happy in a fancy ballroom as she is in a dingy tavern i think the other companions find her a little odd, she's definitely got a weird mix of sensibilities. she is blunt to the point of being comical at times and isn't above using intimidation to get what she wants - she definitely is not a smooth talker. on top of everything else aeres is a very emotionally guarded person, she is not the easiest to approach or get to open up and be vulnerable... she is very convinced of her own coldness and selfishness and tries to mask her goodness behind a veneer of aloofness appropriate for a lady of her breeding. but under all of this she's loyal, passionate and insightful
it's become a running joke in our home game that aeres always makes terrible first impressions, which i can imagine holding true for the bg3 companions. so while i can see things starting out a little rougher with Wyll, Gale and Shadowheart (who find her bluntness trying for different reasons), she gets along pretty well with Lae'zel and Astarion, and everything kind of smooths out as they spend more time together and realise that she's not so much malicious as she is just...emotionally strained. Lmfao. her actions (standing up for Arabella, not letting Arka execute Sazza) paint her in a more positive light than her words. sorry i feel like i went off on a total tangent here and didn't really answer your question all too thoroughly but 😭 thank you for the interest!!

Thoughts/wonderings on the Dragon Age: The Missing issue 1 preview pages (Dragon Age: The Missing #1 spoilers at link), under a cut due to spoilers (please note post contains spoilers for front pages and synopses of subsequent issues beyond #1 as well):
I know it isn't new, as we saw her before in this piece of art, but I love Evka's design, like her hairstyle, her facial markings, etc.
Evka and Antoine is a pleasant surprise, I'm looking forwards to spending time with them and learning more about them, and I hope they both make it out of the issue alive.
going by the presence of two other characters (that resemble Teia and Viago) on the cover of #2, it seems Evka and Antoine are the companions for issue 1 only, but still, the composition for the adventuring party of issue 1 is such a treat. No humans, and dwarf-heavy!! I'd like to see more of that sort of thing in DA going forwards
about that. Evka and Antoine in #1. #2 has what looks like Teia and Viago on the front. #3's synopsis says Varric and Harding run into a pair of Veil Jumpers, and I wondered here if they could be Strife and Irelin. based on this I have wondered if each issue of Dragon Age: The Missing features a different cameo of 2 of the 'newer era', 'Tevinter Nights & similar' characters, perhaps even representing different factions? [Wardens, Crows, Veil Jumpers/The Triangle Guys, ?]. a) how fun, and a neat way to re-feature and expand on these characters before DA:D b) could we be seeing these folks in DA:D? c) who could it be in The Missing #4?
I like Varric's dialogue, I can hear 'his voice', u know? he seems so tired and on-edge in this. :[
So, if something has been dragging the people of Marnas Pell away / abducting them, the title could have a double meaning. It's not just Solas who is kinda 'missing', that Varric, Harding and the Inquisition remnants are looking for. these poor people are missing as well. if so and since that's the title of the whole series, not just one issue, that could be a plot thread that runs through all 4 issues
Varric and Harding's dialogue "Stop him, what else" / "But you were his friend, right? Maybe you could, you know, talk to him?" exchange nicely reflects the Solas choice Stop/Redeem at the end of Trespasser
"It fits, though. A refuge in the ass end of nowhere. He's really gone down in the world", Varric pls, the shade
"You were his friend, right?" reminded me of when the Inquisitor can ask Varric in Haven 'tell me about your friend Anders, the mage who blew up the Kirkwall Chantry'. poor varric, he must be so tired and feel so guilty feeling like his friends keep ending up doing stuff that isn't good for the world either with his involvement or under his nose without him knowing.
the light/dark shading on Varric's face feels quite intense compared to the others. it emphasizes for me how on-edge and stuff he's feeling/acting
Has Harding's hairstyle changed since DA:I? ^^ she wears it in a long braided ponytail now? reminds me of the Harding-esque dwarf in this DA:D concept art
interesting, they're in the Deep Roads with those familiar dwarven statues, but when Antoine is looking at the wall, that looks like a carving of a human-sized figure on a horse
"A tall, dark figure, emerging from the Deep Roads to drag the unwary to their doom" 👁️
"There could be a human or an elf down here, using the place as a base for whatever terrible scheme they've concocted" 👁️
the shadowy figure at the end 👁️
I guess if they told Evka and Antoine, they would probably become people Solas does know, not 'people he doesn't know', and the Inquisition remnants are trying to keep their operations secret and uninvolved people out of harm's way. I also wonder specifically what lead it is that the Inquisition remnants had that sent Varric and Harding down here after Solas in the first place. is it just Varric & Harding looking into these, or are there other groups of known faces investigating others?
about the kidnappings, and the possible it's darkspawn/maybe it's not darkspawn stuff. we know that darkspawn take female captives during raids and take them into the Deep Roads (the origin of Broodmothers). in the novel The Calling, the Architect's darkspawn captured and took captive Warden Bregan. ofc that doesn't mean it's darkspawn, especially since Evka and Antoine hadn't sensed any yet, just that it's not unknown that darkspawn kidnap people. is whatever/whoever's taken the people doing effed up experiments on them? is there any connection to the underground monsterpools from Horror of Hormak? how does it link into the plots of subsequent issues e.g. going by the Venatori presence in the synopsis for #2, maybe it is them who are the culprits?
could investigating the kidnappings be why Evka and Antoine had been recalled to Weisshaupt in TN?
also I'm just so excited! Obviously we knew that this comic was coming, and that it's stated to be a DA:D lead-in. but it's still just so exciting to finally see the DA:D storyline, or the prologue thereof, finally kicking off (things like TN & the short stories were great but more in the vein of bridging content between things, this feels more like 'Chapter One').

hi Birch! how bout essentials 7, party 4, codex 10 for Nat and Malachite? :>
Essentials 7: How do they dress in their downtime, while fighting, in formal situations, etc.?
so Nat and Malachite both tend towards really practical downtime clothing, but from slightly different angles. Nat always wears something that can easily have armor thrown on, because she might always have to fight (or, later, have to do some paragon shit for orzammar). she does prefer more feminine clothing, especially when she's pregnant/after having her baby. Malachite's downtime clothing isn't designed to easily throw armor on - it's made to both impress people around skyhold, but also allow her to get her 10 daily miles of running around her fortress done.
it's also of note that, as a rogue vs warrior, what armor they may be throwing on differs significantly (need to research more about armor to make definitive statements). what I can say - Nat tends to have well-made but generic armor, whereas Malachite wears well-made Inquisition armor. If you looked, you could find blue tied into Nat's armor; it would be impossible to miss the green and symbols emblazoned on Mal's.
formally, I know Nat will incorporate armor, and both of them will visibly carry a weapon (just Dwarva things). Nat will lean to whichever identity is most important at the time - Warden vs Paragon vs Hero and adjust her dress. I have a standing headcanon of dwarven hairstyling to denote caste...should get that properly finished out sometime. (I think Mal generally just lets Josie dress her for formal situations. Easy way to keep the girlfriend happy and less for Mal to focus on.)
I might reblog this later with some reference photos or sketches, but that is not for right now.
Party 4: Are there any companions or advisors they don't get along with? Have any of them ever left the party?
(I think this is really a reflection of how I find the companions - I like all of DAO, but DAI are harder to connect to for me. That said, Malachite and I have entirely different perspectives on a lot of her crew.)
Nat - eh no. She and Wynne argue and she doesn't like Oghren much but they all get on okay enough and no one ever leaves lolol. Oghren won't leave her alone, to her absolute frustration.
Mal - She went Templar, so she and Cullen aren't on much of speaking terms atm. They didn't get on well early on either, but it's definitely getting worse. Exactly the kind of disconnect you want in your army, right? She's starting to be better friends with Viv, but the first year they were at eachothers throats. Leliana freaks her out (had a crisis of faith at Mal and Mal didn't talk to her for a year). Cassandra. If Mal could have made the Breach swallow Cass, well. I think Cole might end up leaving? I'm not sure where we are on approval right now, but they are just not getting on.
Mal wants so badly to get on with Sera but they are so at odds it's hilarious.
(Bonus round, the shopkeep who argues with Dagna? Whose name I have never read? She hates him and he hates her and that is just the way it is.)
Codex 10: Are there any animals they have a particular love or hatred for?
Nat loves squirrels!! I make the executive decision that Fereldan has squirrels! She also loves nugs. She would never eat a mabari, but every other animal is free range. I think she's Not A Fan of cats after waking Shale.
Malachite hates rams. Malachite is not a fan of most animals, actually. She and Bull really agree on dragons, though. Too bad Mal doesn't swing his way. I think she could manage a pet for Josie's sake, but would never live with one of her own volition.

Fine Dwarven Beards by commanderstrawberry
This mod ads hairstyle that have beards attached to them to the cc and ads beards to some npcs.
It has a few more issues and requires a bit more work to get all it’s features than the beardy female dwarves mod. I think it’s worthwhile to give your dwarf lady a glorious beard.

"Small" checklist of things I want in Dragon Age 4:
Better hairstyles is obvious
Better looking armour is also obvious. Give me more variety other than "shitty trench coat a school shooter would wear"
A Varric romance. If this is going to be the last game he appears I do not see why you can't throw the dwarf lovers a bone Bioware
Combat similar to Dragon Age 2. I prefer button mashing and getting to whack enemies with my staff than holding trigger while a boring animation plays.
Put Kieran in the plot, he has so much potential. Or at least some kind of revisit to Flemeth taking in the Archdemon soul or what it means that Solas may have that very soul too. Just something with the Archdemon we fought in DAO.
Let us wear Antivan Crow armour.
Please pay homage to the background we pick in character creation. I really don't want another instance of Lavellan suddenly going brain dead when visiting and ancient elven ruin and suddenly having amnesia about their culture and history. Make the world react to our race. Make characters make comments about our class. If our elven protagonist goes to an alienage, don't have them be utterly oblivious to the squalor most elves live in. Because they would be AWARE.
An update from our Warden. I don't really expect the warden to make an appearance because that is insanely tricky. But another letter, or a character updating us on where they are at. Like say, if Zevran makes an appearance in da4 and he was romanced, have him explain if the Warden has gotten any closer to curing the Taint.
Piercing options in the character creation.
A resolution on Anders.
Honestly you know what would be sick but also unlikely but I'm gonna put it here anyway NAVAL EXPLORATION AND COMBAT. I see some concept art featuring what looks like underwater exploration and it reminded me of Black Flag. And if Isabela is back, then it can be her ship we explore by.
More demonisation of the Chantry. Inquisition, as much as I do like that game, leaves such a sour taste in my mouth over the attitude towards the Chantry. It is a powerhouse of abuse and hatred. an instigator of genocide and cultural appropriation and for it to be treated like a sick puppy that just needs to go to the vet is terrible. Going to Tevinter, somewhere that just disregards the Chantry, should offer an environment where we can finally explore how bad the chantry is.
Blood magic specialisation and more exploration towards its positive uses.
Antivan Crow origin.
Divinity Original 2 mechanic where magic and bombs can inflict elements onto the environment. So like, if you make it rain and then cast an ice based power. The puddles will turn to ice and make enemies slip. Spicing up combat.
Also divinity original sin 2 mechanic where you can romance anyone because your idea of attractive might not be same as your player's. because Fane was the best romance and you nearly skipped out on Solas being an option so....can't really trust you to decide who we can and can't romance.
For Dwarven players. Make the camera cut half their face off its so funny.
Speaking of dwarven players please try and work with propertions. Even if that's making new animations for love interests to bend down or pick up their dwarven lover during kiss scenes. Believe me the game will look better for it and your fans will appreciate it when their small dwarf doesn't suddenly GROW.
Also, more romance scenes in general? Idk it feels like such a drag when you wanna romance a character but across 40+ hours of gameplay you only have 3 romantic cutscenes.
More personality. The Inquisitior was so wooden and I would love a system like the blue, purple, red dialogue wheel to make a come back because as simple as it was IT WORKED. Hawke felt alive especially purple. And have companions COMMENT on your disposition. Have serious characters call you an arsehole or hide their smiles when your character is being snarky.

1. I don't surport amazon becouse of the way they are as a business, treat the people working for them etc (if that makes sense, I'm not english speaking so I don't know how to explain better) but the fact that people are mad becouse they include POC are disgusting like wtf and then they claim that they ain't racist!?!? What!?
2. True I'm a bit mad about the hairstyles like how was Glorfindel dragged down by his hair if he had a buzzcut but whatever
3. You seen interview with the vampire!? I feel like it's sooo underated!!!!
4. Love your art❤❤❤❤❤
1- Some people also say things like "They are not inclusive, they are just demagogic, it's all marketing". And yes, they are absolutely right, it is. Except a few series made with much love by very wonderful people, most inclusion nowadays is marketing, and half of the time is very clumsily done. Does that mean that it would be better to have an all white casting for the show? Absolutely no. Representation matters. And having POC characters in this universe that aren't villains or extras is important, marketing or not.
2- Yeah, that sucks. There is also the beardless dwarven ladies and many other sexist decisions that are awful.
3- I watched the movie (which I love) and read all the books, except the latest saga. I'd say those were darker times, but I was 16 and I enjoyed them to no end. I tried reading the newest ones as an adult but the cringe levels were lethal. Although, to be honest, I'd still read them if they were a gift. The first one was fun, in a very cringy way.
I must say that the decision of chaging one of the main characters for a black man in the series was a very delicate one, considering that said character was a cotton plantation owner, with slave of his own. But they modified the story to fit these changes, and I really want to see how that turns out, because it could be amazing if done well.
4- Thank you so much 💖

5. Fife Tosscobble (dnd halfling bard) long time fav, despite that I've not been able to play her properly! She's a jaded lesbian who was framed for her lover's death but believes she deserves the blame.
4. Chancellor's Lot (dnd genasi pact weapon) a weird one, he was a warlock who got a bad end & end up trapped in a weapon. No idea how I'd play him in game but I'd love to.
3. Uath (rp dwarven princess & insect mage) I just love her design so much. I had a lot of fun. She's adopted into the royal family & is older than her siblings but still considered the youngster bc race ages. Rides a giant ram & uses illusions to mess with ppl.
2. Aislyn Tabris (dragon age city elf warrior) the OG. The blorbo that ruled my artblog for so long. The beginning of my MILF era. I owe her so much. Got me through university. I want to draw her everytime I see her.💕✨
1. Gwillian 'the last gasp' (Arcane zaunite) the new queen. Bartender & mutant from the depths of the undercity: gills/poison immunity/sharp teeth. I put so many identity/depersonalisation/monsterfucker vibes into her. Sadly, she's so pretty she's hard for me to draw 😢 She made me actually want to write?! So she has to be #1
I can do two hairstyles: fried bob or braids.

Who's your favourite dwarf and why?
I didn't expect an ask 👀
I will be dull with an answer and say I can't choose only one dwarf out of them all.
I think it was Bofur at the very first time when me and my sibling saw the movie, because they chose Bombur as their favourite. So I chose the older brother accordingly. I love these two and headcanon them being the most friendliest and kindest towards Bilbo. And their cousin Bifur, I love his black and white braids so much. He is also very funny, kind of an enygmatic character, with "two wolves" inside of him xD Although actor gave him some sad backstory. His fate in Sansukh (I will mention a fanfic, because I really love it) is so upsetting, though I am not yet aware of his canon fate (need to reread many things on English).
Then I thought of Dori. He is described being the strongest among the dwarves of Thorin's Company in the book, and in the movie I think he is supposed to be not the most masculine (I may be wrong at viewing it like this) dwarf, and I love when a character knits mittens and then kicks enemies' asses. He is also a mother hen to his younger brothers, who are also very wonderful. What I love in the movies is how different dwarven characters are. Nori's star-shaped hairstyle though! And funny to think that even after Nori stealing something from Bilbo's house, Bilbo is still friendlier to him than to Lobelia xD And Ori is an adorable and shy young dwarf, watching him on background is a lot of fun (like any other dwarf really, but they all deserved a proper screening time, maybe some of their background stories being brought up...), but now I am thinking of the scene in Moria...
So it leads to Balin. I love his movie version so much, they made him older than Thorin and he probably was like an older brother to both him and Dwalin (to Dwalin a real one asdfghjk), and their handwrittings are so similar, is it easy to guess who was busy teaching Thorin to write xD (maybe?). I love how he interacts with Bilbo too 😭 And Dwalin asdfghjk In the movie he is not the friendliest looking guy, but he is a good guy xD Man loved his cookies. Also for how long he lived asdfghjk My guy, your fam and friends are waiting for you in the Halls of Mahal, hurry up (I am joking of course). I also don't see a lot of people mentioning how he confronted dragonsick Thorin, which probably was so difficult to him, since he was extremelly loyal to his cousin and friend to step up against him.
Oin and Gloin are often forgotten and I am so glad to see bits of fanworks with them. You can see where Gimli got it xD Oin is a pharma guy, I guess it partially works for him to be a healer too (?). I don't mind him being an advanced healer as fandom often describes him. How else were they supposed to go on the quest without a healer? His movie design is wonderful, need to practice drawing him though. And I call Gloin a family guy xD He looks very fierce but in reality a very fond and loving father and husband. Love that. I am glad I can interact with him in LOTRO while he is in Misty Mountains, heh. He talks about his son and about Bilbo 🤗
Kili and Fili, another set of brothers :') They are just silly guys, who sometimes try to copy their uncle (unsuccessfully, thanks Mahal). I guess it is a rule that every Tolkien (movieverse) group should have someone like Merry and Pippin xD How can you not be fond of the boys. Also how Fili is a protective older brother :( And I also like Kili with Tauriel, though I don't like how it was played out in the movie (how could they be so disrespectful towards Tauriel's actress?). Oh, and of course I like Fili and Kili confronting Thorin. As well as the fond scenes with them (dwarven familial head bumps!)
I like movie Thorin. Nice singing voice, bro 👍 Although he is funnier in the book (as well as he is more of a prick), he has his silly moments in the movies too (thanks for them, he should be a silly guy too, not just a majestic and an epic hero) xD Topographagnosia and nearsightedness (probably common for dwarves unless they are in their mountains; also funny not the conditions itselves, of course, but how Thorin still stays overconfident); his exeggerated dislike of elves, although he uses an elven sword, which looks pretty cool actually; and then how he acts around Bilbo in last movies (I don't even know why actor decided to bring this, he is a Tolkien fan who read every bit of lore, but not that I mind, although it is still kinda strange). O, and I like his cartoon version, he is cool.
His papa and grandpa are also cool by the way. But movies (once again! 🧐) did disservice to Thrain! Such a disrespect, and this dwarf had such a bad fate..
Never can't stop being sad over Frerin and Dis 😭 I love how fandom made Dis very similar to Thorin, though she might be much wiser xD But still sad(((
Dain Ironfoot, of course! And his obsession with pigs as pets and steads xD He has a gorgeous beard, sad it had to be cgi-ed because it was too heavy. And I am afraid to mention Sansukh too often 😅 I think this story has a very awesome portrait of Dain. Also sad 😓
And Gimli! So sad they made him exclusively a comic relief in the movies. His eternal friendship (I am tend to broship them more, but I don't really mind the romance too!) with Legolas kind of brings some soft feelings. Also Lego LOTR Gimli is the cutest thing ever 😄
Narvi! Always appreciating Narvi, their (fandom sees this character very variously, which is awesome) bro Celebrimbor and the damn door they've made xD
I will also add Mim. Yes, he is a petty dwarf and kind of an antagonist, but I was rooting for him 😆
Honestly, I'd also name many dwarves from Sansukh, but it is a fanfic, and yeah, there are truly a lot lot of them to list asdfghjl

Yesterday I posted more Noldor Hair Headcanons (Part 1 | Part 2 | On AO3 and @alqualonde-s wrote in the tags that she'd like some visuals. As it happens, I have very clear mental images of each hairstyle in the fic, so I did some sketches!
Tumblr media
(individual sketches under the cut, terrible ID in alt)
Here we have:
a very sad injured Finrod with his mourning braids
Galadriel wearing the crown braids they devised on the Helcaraxë to protect their ears
Maglor and his far-too-complex mourning braids
Lalwen wearing armour and battle braids
Turgon wearing a formal style, black/kinky hair edition.
I didn't have designs yet for Lalwen and Turgon but I'm happy with these!
I'm not always consistent with my hairstyle headcanons in my art, but as a bonus, some hairstyles I've drawn before:
Finarfin in semi-formal Tirion style
Maedhros in battle styles here and here
Maglor in a slightly silly Fëanorian style
Finrod in fully formal Tirion style
Finrod in semi formal Tirion (or formal Nargothrond style)
Celebrimbor in a mixed late-Fëanorian and dwarven style
Fingolfin and Fingon in semi-formal Tirion styles (with Anairë in a simpler style)
Celegorm with his hunting braids
Elrond in a late-Fëanorian style
Fingon in two formal Tirion styles (but in trad pencil)
Bonus: "Elwing's hair floats around her as she falls."

anyway, watched the first 2 the rings of power episodes (🏴‍☠️ it of course), and to be honest,,,
aside from some questionable design choices including elven hairstyles/beardless dwarven women/celebrimbor being old/etc., it's... pretty alright actually??? and like yeah, sure, they did take some liberties with lore, but c'mon people. it was bound to happen, since they don't have the rights to silm. nostalgia can be a great thing sometimes, but lotr movies also had lots of changes. they weren't as faithful to canon as some would think. is it a fanfic? yeah, it kinda is. is it really a 'bad' fanfic? idk, i am enjoying it so far.
p.s. not gonna lie, finrod's hairstyle was horrible tho, yes.

watched the first 2 eps of Rings of Power yesterday and it was basically what i was expecting - a sequence of clunky, overproduced videogame cutscenes - but despite my low expectations i was still surprised by just how bad the writing was. here’s my post bitching about it.
caveat: several years ago i attempted to read The Silmarillion but found it boring and only got about a third of the way through. i’m less interested in how faithful Rings of Power is to its source material (though i do care about faithfulness-of-vibe) and more concerned with critiquing the show on its own merits or failings as a story.
so first off: the aesthetics. i’m not gonna mince my words here, rings of power encapsulates a recent aesthetic tendency in tv and film which i despise. i’ve seen some reviews praising it as “visually stunning” and i’m like, are we watching the same show? are there some people who like this horrible modern fantasy aesthetic where nothing looks real, everything is CGI and has this oversaturated, sort of shiny quality; where even the physical costumes manage to look computer-generated and even “gritty” scenes like battlefields or a rustic tavern are uncannily sanitized? people enjoy this?
the overall shiny videogame aesthetic is compounded by some truly bizarre character design. number one is giving all the male elves a hairstyle that can only be described as “80′s corporate prepster quiff”, sometimes bordering precariously onto greasy mullet territory. each individual elf has a metric tonne of gel holding his quiff in place. apparently this is the standard for male elf beauty in the Second Age:
Tumblr media
it is inherently untrustworthy and undignified hair; the only conceivable explanation is that the director wished to evoke the atmosphere of 1980s boardroom dramas and douchebag frat boys to convey that the elves of the Second Age are dumb political animals.
beyond elf hair, the costuming is not great overall. stand out sins: a general plasticky quality to the costumes (the show seems to have a proclivity for a particular mottled-metallic fabric which looks very odd; at one point galadriel is outfitted in a fully sequinned dress; the prosthetic elf ears look like fleshy plastic protruberences. all the characters are caked in highly visible makeup: the only thing that looks materially real in the whole show is galadriel’s over-highlighted pores and the stark delineation of her smokey eye.
Bonus hair issue: no beards on the dwarf women. cowards!
a few positives: there are some cool sets and landscape designs. i thought Lindon was well-conceived and pretty (although undermined by the greasy-ass elves inhabiting it) and i loved Khazad-Dum: they captured the cavernousness of the space, the sense of constant productive motion within the dwarven stronghold, the pulleys and technology and the clever ways of bringing light underground. also loved the geometric Dwarven design sensibility.
basically, the heavily CGI’d approach does in fact work quite well for landscape-establishing longshots, and the sets themselves are generally decent. i could more easily appreciate the backdrop, and be more forgiving towards the videogame aesthetic, if the characters inhabiting the world didn’t have such a consistently jarring appearance.
As for the actual substance of the show... where to begin.
First off, for a show with so much exposition, it really does a poor job of orienting the audience in the world. For a general audience with passing familiarity with the cast of LOTR and The Hobbit, there are a lot of new characters to get to grips with, and the show is bad at basic things like telling you characters’ names and how they are related to each other. Galadriel’s dead brother - who dat? Galadriel and Elrond are clearly friends/relatives but what’s the connection, when did they meet? Elrond used to be friends with Durin but again, when, how? I have the background knowledge to recognise the elf-king (i.e. the only male elf sporting appropriate hair) as Gil-Galad, but I would not know this just from watching the show. And then there are large clusters of random supporting characters where i just have no clue who these guys are.
this leads to the biggest problem, which is that not only do i not know who half the characters are, i also do not have much of a reason to care. the only character with a clearly laid-out motive is galadriel: she is haunted by her brother’s death and wants to find and defeat Sauron. ok, so far so good. but then the next thing we see is her free-soloing up an icy cliff - this apparently has something to do with finding sauron, but how? what is she looking for? why should we be invested in this wild goose chase? we don’t know and neither does her mutinous elven troupe. she is framed as a warrior girlboss, but by episode 2 she’s had a lot of action to very little purpose. and this is the one character who does have a backstory and motive - with every other character it’s like, who are you and what do you want?
another issue is tone. the problem with having an elf-centric series is that the tonal baseline of elves is heightened, serious and formal and this gets to be a drag pretty quickly. in addition, the writers of Rings of Power simply do not pull off the tolkienesque register very well. exchanges like the following are characteristic:
Elrond: After all you have endured, it is only natural to feel conflicted. Galadriel: Conflicted? I am grateful you have not known evil as I have, but you have not seen what I have seen. Elrond: I have seen my share. Galadriel: You have not seen what I have seen.
the whole thing smacks of bad pastiche. the word “conflicted” is anachronistic (i did a quick ctrl+f of LOTR and i’m correct, there is not a single instance of the word “conflicted” in the text, it’s a jarringly modern usage). then the rest of the exchange is just redundent repetition and tautology, and i guess we are meant to be very impressed by the weight of galadriel’s trauma here but it’s so lamely expressed. and it’s meaningless because, actually, we don’t really have any idea of the horrors they have seen - we had one shot of galadriel wandering around a wrecked battlefield and mourning her brother, but we haven’t really witnessed her suffering beyond that, and have literally no idea what Elrond has been up to prior to the start of the story. so this exchange carries absolutely no weight. this is clearly meant to convey the high seriousness of tolkienesque dialogue but it’s amateur hour! it's just unclever, bad-sounding dialogue. this is basically the level throughout.
the writers occassionally try to lighten things up with jokes:
Medhor: ...or do you think me blind? Arondir: I think you talk too much. And you smell of rotting leaves. Medhor: No, I don’t! Arondir: Yes, you do.
Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha! Ha ha ha!
Harfoots are naturally the designated comic relief race. the harfoot scenes are constantly gesturing towards mischievious frolicking but no one ever does or says anything actually funny. the harfoots are also unfortunately landed with the role of “spiritual primitives”; there are a few circle-of-life speeches, lenny henry plays some kind of hobbit shamen, it’s annoying stuff. the one positive thing i’d say is that at least with the harfoots we actually get a sense of how far in the past we are vs. LOTR; it’s basically impossible to convey the passing of millennia when your focal characters are elves because they live forever and never change, but with the harfoots we see a recognisably more primitive ancestor-culture to the hobbits, so that helps to locate the series in time.
other bad things: - the voyage to valinor, fuck that was weird, are we supposed to infer that the elves just stand there clasping their swords in armed formation for the whole journey? - celebrimbor... :’( he has such strong willy wonka vibes, why would they do this. i think they deliberately made him off-putting to pre-emptively thwart the celebrimbor/annatar shippers.
good things: i like that they depict Olorin/Gandalf as deliriously disoriented by the experience of corporeal manifestation, looking forward to seeing baby’s journey of learning how to use limbs and process sensory input. i am also keen to see more dwarves.

Dwarven Noble Husband - Dœr Bolg
He is the first official spouse of Jumper. He was deceived as to gender and nature of and even enthralled by the Jumper for an extended part of his marriage so Jumper could climb the caste ladder for Jump goals. He has … complicated feelings to Jumper as he stays married and later insisted on having begotten children. One son, one daughter. He insists to primarily influence to “raise as proper noble caste worthy of the Assembly & Legions to Restore Orzammar”
Begotten Son of Jumper and Dwarven Husband - Thrønir Bolg
While he is very active he is forbidden to truly marry as he is scheduled for the Legion of the Dead and trained to, hopefully, martially renew and take over the Legion and reclaim all lost Thaigs of the Underground Kingdoms
Begotten Daughter of Jumper and Dwarven Noble Husband - Ishagar Bolg
She is more trained for spy/master work or as a black widow or for managerial/admin work. She's groomed to lead the family as a noblewoman
Her signature are rings that can emit wires or claws while coated in choice drugs and poison. These are made to fit her role in the Orzammer reclamation. She personally made the rings and they are purely technological though very advanced and needed magic to make. She favors pistol or hand-sized firearms most out of her family. Jumper insisted on giving her an epic-ally forged and carefully, mystically, crafted shillelagh. She hates it. She believes it implies she is infirm and needs the family's protection rather than her forming and raising the family.

This is the part that is less likely the artist will read, because even with these restrictions, this is still an awful lot of information that will take more than one day for any artist to digest. We’re not dumb, it’s just that we have to actually do the words-to-images reasoning. Feel a bit freer here, since all the essential information should be already written.
Personality Traits
Thrønir Bolg is very casual, tends to be clothing optional if can get away with it, but while underdressed will have fancy or appealingly kept hair like him if not in training or campaign.

We’re not dumb, it’s just that we have to actually do the words-to-images reasoning. Feel a bit freer here, since all the essential information should be already written.

Appendix: Assumptions you shouldn’t make.
The artist is fluent in English. Especially since you search for low-tier budding artists that likely live in zones where there’s no market and competition for art. Keep your English at a textbook level, which is good in general. Nobody likes to have a commission sheet written like it’s poetry. Start with the subject of the sentence, then the verb, maybe one adverb, and the subject, a maximum of two adjectives attached.
The artist knows what a “jump chain” is. If you want to mention it, explain it, with a sensical and concise sentence. “I want you to draw this character of mine that comes from jump chain, which is a big roleplay/fanfiction hybrid where writers enjoy picking their characters and make them travel “jump” through different narrative universes, according to established rules, and learn and obtaining something and make connections with the people that live in.” I guess it’s good enough.
The artist has the same knowledge as you about every IP ever and for them is pleasant to read dozen of Wiki pages to catch up with the specific jargon you’re using. Especially since they would be mostly located outside of the US and would have been exposed to different animated media.
The more visual references the better. Absolutely fucking not. With an overload of references, the brain will start picking the ones that the artist likes more and they might not be the ones you meant.
