Holiday Inconveniences (part 7)

Last chapter. It��s been fun to write this but even fun things has to end, right? In addition, some stories end right at the beginning and this is definitely one of them.

Previous chapters and everything I’ve ever wrote

Mare didn't know why she let Kilorn drag her to the skating rink. Christmas has passed and as always it had performed his miracle: his best friend, because it was now obvious that they were just that and nothing more, had revealed to her that he had a crush on the mechanic's daughter, who Mare couldn’t remember very well as she was younger, but she was still happy for him, while she and Cal had started chatting and he had even been invited for dinner on the 25th, where he seemed to have had a lot of fun. Everything had worked out for the best but now it seemed to her that the situation was rapidly getting out of hand: first of all she couldn’t skate, yet she was in the queue, waiting to receive her own pair of shoes with blades with which she was sure she would’ve ended up cutting herself. Secondly, her whole family knew how much she hated crowded places and put herself to the test when she wasn’t sure she would succeed, at least in a mediocre way, in her intent; not only did she hate being embarrassed - but honestly, who liked it? - but she was the type of person who was easily frustrated and the only answer she had when she was helpless before the evidence was to get angry, so the reason why she was there, where anyone else skated like a damned pros, even children, remained a mystery for her, as long as she didn’t want to admit, only to herself if she didn’t want to lose a limb, that Diana’s story about how she used to skate on frozen lakes with her mother and sister before they died had moved her and perhaps made her pity her brother’s girlfriend a little. Obviously she was sure Diana hadn’t told the anecdote with that purpose but only overwhelmed by the enthusiasm for Gisa's proposal but in any case that was the result and she certainly couldn’t change it now, even if she was sure that she would fall as soon as she was managed to stand up.

"Don't pout, I don’t know how you managed to get to today without ever having tried since you’ve been spending your holidays here since you were born.” Kilorn exclaimed, and Mare, for a brief moment, was tempted to nudge him hard in the ribs. Although he would never admit it, it was obvious that he had insisted so much on making her participate in that hateful activity just to strut with Cameron, which raised volutes of ice while, together with her twin, was spinning like one of the best figure skater in the whole world. And she would’ve been the best ridiculous wingman ever if only she hadn't seen Cal in the crowd, intent on teaching two identical children - how many chances two pairs of twins were on the same tiny skating rink? - how to turn gracefully but without losing speed. That tiny distraction was enough to send her to crash into someone else and then fall on him. With a curse, Mare tried to get up just to slide again. The victim seemed a little confused but scratching the back of his head he sat up.

"If you couldn't wait to get back into my arms, you could’ve just say it." the boy teased her, and Mare stiffened. A few inches from her face, Maven Merandus' piercing blue eyes peered at her as if not a day had passed since their last meeting and she was just the stupid little girl who had believed his lies.

Cal just couldn't understand. The last time he had met Mare it had been a couple of days after Christmas: she had asked him to meet at the station, where she had told him that they could be nothing but friends and that she was grateful for the time they had spent together but that she had to go back to college earlier than expected and that it was better if they didn't see each other again. Cal had tried to respect her decision, having a nightmare holiday during which Maven had been more braggart than usual, but now she was there, in front of his uncle's house where the snow that had joined them now turned into a smear-gray mash, and he didn’t know who to interpret it.

"I don't want to miss you anymore." she said. Cal didn't know how to respond and when Mare realized he wasn't going to do it, she went on. "I’m selfish, I know, and I shouldn’t be here.” she concluded with a sigh, as if she were ready to leave. Cal understood how difficult it was for her to be sincere, to make herself vulnerable, and he would’ve appreciated if only he could understand what all that nonsense meant.

"Have you ever wanted something while knowing that you shouldn't have wanted it?" she asked after a long silence. He almost laughed. According to his father and stepmother, everything he wanted was wrong from every point of view, no matter how important it was to him, how much he needed it.

"Sorry, it was a really shitty idea. I should go." she said, turning away, but Cal grabbed her by the arm. She was behaving in an absolutely illogical way by showing up at his house and then running away again, moreover, it was evident that she wanted to tell him everything, that what she was trying to keep hidden from him weighted on her heart to the point she could hardly hold back a nervous breakdown.

"I wish I could tell you everything..." she murmured, lowering her eyes, but it hadn't escaped Cal that they had filled with tears.

"You don't have to. If you need to be told that it's okay not to know, I'll tell you. I don't care." he replied, shaking his head. "It’s enough for me to know that there is something you would like to tell me but you cannot and if one day it will come out, regardless of what it is, it’ll be my problem because the decision to go ahead without knowing is mine."

"In any other case it would be enough." she replied, continuing to observe her feet. It made no sense but he was sorry to insist, especially when he saw how important it was for her to keep this thing to herself. Cal rubbed his face, clearly frustrated. What did she want from him? He had done nothing but repeat her he didn’t care about this secret, that he wanted her regardless of everything and he didn’t know what else to do to convince her his words were genuine. If he had followed common sense, as his father would’ve suggested, he would’ve closed it, sending her off and ending what she can’t obviously do. But he wasn’t his father and acting with common sense had never taken him anywhere, therefore he continued that absurd discussion: “I’m the right man, Mare! I’m the one for you and I know it because you’re the only one that’s right for me.”

Her pleading gaze told him that he wasn’t helpful for her purpose but that was just what he wanted. What a strange desire was for someone to break your heart, yet it was perfect for her, who knew how to be stubborn and weak at the same time, in the wrong and in the reason, a mix of opposites that attracted him to the point that he didn't even realize he had took her face in his hands. It was she who placed her lips delicately on his, as if the mere thought of doing it again killed her but at the same time she would’ve died if she hadn’t. How such intense feelings be felt by someone who had known each other for a couple of weeks? Was it love at first sight? Was this what had happened between his father and mother? Surely she described it like this in her diary, a legacy his uncle had decided to give him on his twentieth birthday, considering him old enough to bear the wright of the words that were written in there. Just as her mother had felt more than twenty years ago, Cal too had never enough of Mare and he continues to kiss her even while he took her in his arms, her legs wrapped around his hips. A groan of excitement escaped Cal's lips when he pressed her against the wall and began to move and rub his pelvis against hers. If it had been someone else he would’ve taken her there, perhaps under the fire stairs, but it was Mare and although they had known each other in an odd way now he wanted to do everything right.

"I'll take you home, and as much as I don't want you to leave and I'll curse myself until the last of my days, I want to do it all over again and take you to dinner first."

When Elara finally drove Coriane to take her own life, she had no idea that Coriane was pregnant again. No one did, except Coriane - and Sara Skonos. As one of the first skin healers to arrive at the scene, she was able to put aside her horror at seeing her best friend dead in favor of revealing Coriane’s secret in an attempt to see if the baby could survive outside the womb. An emergency caesarean was performed and though it was close, they were able to save the baby girl. Named after her paternal grandmother, Annabel grew up being closely watched and doted on by her father and Cal, and absolutely despised by Elara. If it wasn’t for her uncle Julian finding a way to impress on Annabel the importance of keeping some Silent Stone on her at all times - no matter how weak or sick it made her - there is a very good chance Elara would have done away with her like Coriane. Despite being doted on by her older brother and father, she knows her step mother despises her something fierce, and eventually after Elara’s whispering, her younger half brother Maven is the same. Feeling stiffled, she ends up begging Cal to sneak her out with him into Red towns, which he reluctantly agrees to. Something he would both dearly regret and be somewhat thankful for in hindsight, because it started a fire in Annabel - a fire that led to her eventually joining the Scarlet Guard, completely under everyone’s noses… until Elara and Maven put their plan into place, and she escapes with Mare Barrow and Cal.

Since you finished King's Cage (and are drowning in a bucket of tears with us marecal shippers) what are your rq4 predictions ?!

I’m not really good in making predictions, but here’s what I think could possibly happen.

I think either Cal or Maven will die. I would say Mare too, but wouldn’t it be too cruel if our young heroine dies after everything she’s gone through? (I don’t think this is gonna be a DIVERGENT Series 2.0.) So I think Mare is safe for now. She deserves a happy ending.

For Cal’s fate, I’m going to base my predictions on QUEEN SONG. Coriane wrote in her diary that Cal “will not be a soldier,” but as we all have witnessed, he became one. One of the many things that drove Coriane insane was dreams of her son dying, though it’s possible that it was also Elara’s doing to make Coriane extremely paranoid. But it’s more likely that Cal won’t die, because Coriane swore in her diary that “he will not be the same” as in Cal will not be like his father. She also wrote that “my son will bring peace” and “he will not die fighting.” You see, Coriane promised that Cal would never be a soldier, but he did become one, so I guess (and hope) this time Coriane will get what she wanted for her son―that he will end the war and not die fighting. Coriane deserves that for her son, at least.

I believe Cal will try to do something―some change―as king. He spoke the truth when he made that speech about how wrong he’d been regarding the Red-Silver divide (KING’S CAGE Chapter 29). That’s his first advocacy, especially that he wants to prove Mare that he can do something. But it’s really impossible when he’s surrounded by Queen Anabel and House Samos. Let’s not forget that the only reason he has hope in getting back the crown in the first place is because they are backing him. Even though he has his Nanabel, they now have different views; Anabel wants the old ways, Cal wants change. He really is alone now in a den of wolves. And I’m sure he doesn’t want not having control. The difference between Cal and Maven is that the former is better on the battlefield than on the throne, while it’s the opposite for the latter. Cal will probably realize that the Burning Crown is meant for him, that it’s a god’s cursed, that the battlefield is his place, that ending the war is his ultimate mission as a soldier, that he can still make a change even without a crown on his head. I want him to realize all those. I really don’t want him to die, because you know, that would be too cruel and unfair, I guess. Coriane never got a happy ending, so I want her son to at least have an ending that he deserves, and getting killed is definitely not the one.

On the other hand, I think Maven will die. Mare has wanted to kill him since the end of Book 1. Remember the last line: “I will kill him.” But Cal doesn’t want Maven to die, which is crazy, because the reason he’s suffering is because of his fucked-up brother. Heck, Cal even wants to “fix” Maven. My son is so good and kind. So if Mare kills Maven, the chances of she and Cal getting back together would go down to zero. Unless, Cal won’t find it weird to be together even after his girlfriend killed his beloved brother. Cal really has to change his opinion on Maven to make everything less complex. I think the most ideal Maven death would be while saving Mare at some point. That’s the only way he can redeem himself, but that doesn’t mean everything will be forgiven.

The Calore brothers really need to confront each other and talk. This needs to happen so badly, because, surely, Cal never expected any of this and would want to talk to Maven. He has so many questions that only Maven can answer. Not with lies, but with honesty this time.

I don’t know what will happen to Evangeline and Elane at this point. I want Cal to get an earful from Eve for his stupid decisions. He didn’t only lock himself to King Volo’s grasp, he also took Eve with him. They’re together in Volo’s king’s cage. Maybe Evangeline will also end up helping Cal, like how she helped Mare. Eve is loyal to her blood, so is Cal. But love still wins, right? She’s already feeling suffocated; she’ll break soon enough. She just wants to be with Elane. Please let the lady be happy.

I’m not sure if Mare will keep her promise to not killing Ptolemus. After all, promises are meant to be broken, like how Cal broke his promise to Mare. “Silver promises mean nothing.” But Mare is Red, so she might want to make a point that Reds are different; they keep their word. Unless she gets another reason to kill Ptolemus that she’d have to break her promise. If someone should kill Ptolemus, I think it’s Farley. For Shade, of course, for Clara, who will grow up without a father, and for the Barrows, who lost their youngest son.

Iris will definitely play a bigger role in the final book. And she still has to avenge her father’s death. House Samos should prepare to face the wrath of Iris Cygnet.

I’m not sure if we’re going to see more of Cameron. It seems like her arc is almost done. She’ll still appear, but I’m not sure about her POV.

More Kilorn, please!!!

I’m also starting to think about the possibility of getting Mare’s, Cal’s, and Maven’s POVs in the final book. Though Victoria has said that she isn’t sure if wants to stay in Maven’s head. But that would be interesting.

In the end, I just want everybody to be happy.

Corona Cruel es la precuela de La Reina Roja que nos acerca dos relatos de dos mujeres diferentes. "Canción Real" nos cuenta un poco la vida de la reina Coriane, madre de Cal, quién escribe un diario íntimo y vemos las cosas que sufre y cómo verdaderamente piensa. Me gustó mucho este relato porque podemos ver cómo una familia noble, casi humilde va poco a poco creciendo y llega a formar parte de la familia real. También es muy lindo ver la relacion con Tiberias, como era él antes de ser Rey y tener que asumir todas las decisiones. Y por supuesto, vemos a Elara que desde el principio muestra toda su maldad y poco a poco, con sus garras logra todo lo que se propone. x En "Cicatrices de Acero" vemos cómo Farley va reclutando gente para la Guardia Escarlata y como en ocasiones quiere hacerle frente a su padre, el general. Tenía muchas ganas de leer el relato de Farley porque me parece un personaje muy interesante y la amé desde el comienzo y además en sus otras entregas no la conocemos muy bien. Pero, este relato se me hizo un poco más pesado, quizá sea por los mensajes codificados y nombres en código se me hizo un poco mas lento. Aún así disfruté ver como Farley va creciendo en la Guardia Escarlata y cómo conoce a Shade. Creo que Victoria debe odiarnos para poner a Shade en todas esas páginas y ver cómo se acercaba a Farley, la protegía y también cuidaba de su hermana. x Dos relatos interesantes que quizá no aportan mucho a la historia en general, pero se disfruta ver otros puntos de vista. Canción Real: 4/5 ⭐ Cicatrices de Acero: 3.5/5⭐ x Ya estoy ansiosa por leer La Jaula del rey, creo que va a ser mejor que los anteriores, promete mucho.
