I think about this a lot. How the relationship between Kinsey and Nina is both a parallel and an inverse of that between Ellie and Candice. How Candice could have been a glimpse into Nina’s future if she didn’t actively decide to get better.

Man, I can't deny the first two seasons of NFCV were very important to me at one point. They came out at really dark points in my life and I found them fascinating. Then season 3 happened and I felt gutted. Turned me off from castlevania for years. I'm only now looking into the games and all their lore. It's all just... so much more interesting then the show.
It's also clear some of the people on the show have passion for the franchise... but. We also have people who clearly don't. And the people with said passion are also clearly so irony-poisoned that they can't earnestly enjoy the series. They mock it at every turn because theyre so insecure about enjoying the source material. They have to make it conform to hollywood/comic book standards. It's the MCU/Joss Whedon model but with extra crude nonsense. What a waste.
I'm sorry to hear that you were so let down by something special to you :( I can understand the feeling.
Season 3 is so bad even if you're not a fan of the games. It just spins in circles while beating you over the head that the world sucks and you shouldn't trust anyone: overall it feels so spiteful towards its own characters (that aren't Isaac). Imagine waiting two years for that.
I think Adi Shankar cared, in his own way. He wasn't just "hired muscle" like Ellis was lol, he wanted to deliver an enjoyable product. But everything I've seen about what the guy did, he's a very specific type of fan, basically a fanfiction writer who thinks edgifying Pokémon is the height of art. He also has some weird ass views of his own product: he really said that you can't see N!Dracula as a villain because of his tragic story, which is mindboggling.

Some helpful writing/acting advice:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image IDs: two tweets from Avishai (@/avishaiw) from June 18th, 2023 that read:
Years ago, I was at a one man show whose second half was a seminar on how to do physical comedy. The guy made a point I never forgot:
How do you play a drunk character? By acting like you’re desperate to convince everyone you’re sober.
A recent movie with a depressed main character who’s played as consistently gloomy, without any false front, has me thinking about this
/End ID]
Tumblr media
[Image ID: tweet from Jessica Ellis (@/baddestmamajama) from June 18th, 2023 that reads:
Yup, this is an early acting lesson. Never play bored by acting bored, play it like you’re trying to find something to do and being thwarted
/End ID]
As much as I now hate Whedon and Nathan Fillion (for being willing to work with Whedon in a heartbeat, even after EVERYTHING, just because he never saw it), Whedon aslo gave Fillion some helpful advice about playing bad guys: Bad guys can't think they're bad guys. They have to think they are doing the right thing.
Oh wait more:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: the first tweet is quoted by Anosognosiogenesis (@/pookleblinky> from June 18th, 2023 that reads:
Similarly: how do you play a mindbogglingly stupid character? Act like you're the world's smartest man
/End ID]
I would argue that some characters know that they lack more intellect and that those characters would need to be written and played differently.
Oh look, here's another helpful take on playing dumb from the quote tweets:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: a Quote tweet from Matt McIver (@/mamikgibar) from June 18tu, 2023 that reads:
You don’t play cold, you play trying like hell to get warm. Evergreen advice.
Also people make a mistake playing “dumb” characters. You have to play either a) the constant fight to figure out what’s going on or 2) the utter (incorrect) confidence you know everything.
/End ID]
And back to a quote tweet about acting drunk:
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A Quote Tweet from @/LouisatheLast from the same day as everything else that reads:
This is great acting advice, and so is the direction I got once on acting convincingly very drunk in a scene: “your goal is to get horizontal.” Not just stumble around aimlessly, but be actively trying to lie down on the nearest surface

HANK MCCOY'S BODY LANGUAGE:
DEFENSIVENESS : arms crossed on chest / crossing legs / fist-like hand gestures / pointing index finger / karate chops / stiffening of shoulders / tense posture / curling of lip / baring of teeth
I know that Warren Ellis is persona-non-grata for very good reason, but I really do love his version of Hank, and how he and Scott come to blows during Astonishing X-Men, where you see a lot of this body language. Reading this, and then reading their confrontation in All-New X-Men, is like going from velvet to rags.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
REFLECTIVE : hand-to-face gestures / head tilted / stroking chin / peering over glasses / taking glasses off — cleaning / putting earpiece of glasses in mouth / pipe smoker gestures / putting hand to the bridge of the nose / pursed lips / knitted brows
Wow, this was. Yeah, Hank does pretty much all of these. Sometimes all in the same cap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SUSPICION : arms crossed / sideways glance / touching or rubbing nose / rubbing eyes / hands resting on weapon / brows raising / lips pressing into a thin line / strict, unwavering eye contact / wrinkling of nose
You can see a lot of these in his interactions with Abigail Brand during Whedon's Astonishing and Gillen's S.W.O.R.D. Hank has very consistent body language, which I appreciate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
OPENNESS & COOPERATION : open hands / upper body in sprinters position / leaning in closely / sitting on the edge of a chair / hand-to-face gestures / unbuttoned coat / tilted head / slacked shoulders / droopy/relaxed posture / feet pointed outward / palms flat and facing outward
I was really tempted to make this a montage of Hank taking sitting on the edge of a chair to its natural extreme, because no-one sits on a chair like goddamn Hank McCoy.
Tumblr media
CONFIDENCE : hands behind back / hands on lapels of coat / steepled hands / baring teeth in a grin / rolling shoulders / tipping head back but maintaining eye contact / chest puffed up / shoulders back / arms folded just above navel
There's no entry for walking on his hands, but I feel like there should be, Defenders era Hank especially made an art form out of it.
Tumblr media
INSECURITY & ANXIETY : chewing pen or pencil / rubbing thumb over opposite thumb / biting fingernails / hands in pockets / elbow bent / closed gestures / clearing throat / “ whew ” sound / picking or pinching flesh / fidgeting in chair / hand covering mouth whilst speaking / poor eye contact / tugging at pants whilst seated / jingling money in pockets / tugging at ear / perspiring hands / playing with hair / swaying / playing with pointer / marker / smacking lips / sighing / rocking on balls of feet / flexing fingers sporadically
And, literally just five minutes before that display of ultra-confidence, I present to you all . . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FRUSTRATION : short breaths / “ tsk ” sounds / tightly-clenched hands / fist-like gestures / pointing index finger / running hand through hair / rubbing back of neck / snarling / revealing teeth / grimacing / sharp-eyed glowers with notable tension in the brows / shoulders back, head up - defensive posturing / clenching of jaw / grinding teeth / nostrils flaring / heavy exhales
Man. John Cassaday, please stand up, you're a goddamn master at this.

Alternate Dimensions/Worlds- Research (3)
Locke and Key
Locke & Key follows the events surrounding the Locke family that has moved to their families' traditional home Key house Manor following the murder of their father and the secret of the magical keys.
Tumblr media
The Keys of the Locke family are a variety of magical keys that are found hidden throughout the Locke family home, Keyhouse Manor. The original Keys were crafted by Benjamin Locke during the eighteenth-century Revolutionary War.
These are some of the well known keys from the show:
THE ANYWHERE KEY
It allows the user to travel anywhere in the world ,as long as they’ve seen the door they want to travel through.
THE MIRROR KEY
It brings your reflection in the mirror to life and it also beckons the user into the mirror where they get trapped until someone else comes to rescue.
THE MATCHSTICK KEY
This key acts as a matchstick, allowing users to set fire to whichever location or thing they want.
THE HEAD KEY
The key with the most iconic design — a key with a head for its “handle” — lets its user travel into a person’s mind and explore their feelings, their subconscious, and their memories.
THE GHOST KEY
This key allows the user to leave their physical form and exist solely as a spirit, undetectable to human senses.
THE MUSIC BOX KEY
Not only does this key activate a magical music box, but it allows its wielder to turn another person into their puppet by controlling their entire body.
THE PLANT KEY
This key doesn’t feature in the comics that much, but within the show, we learn that the key activates a tree that has the kids’ uncle (and their father’s brother) Duncan Locke’s memories stored in its roots.
THE IDENTITY KEY
Perhaps the most pivotal key of all, this one allows the user to change their appearance, and change that of others as well. Dodge uses it to get closer to the Locke family and eventually trick them a few different times. The person using the key can transform into someone of a different gender, race, age, and even weight.
THE MENDING KEY
This one works in tandem with the Mending Cabinet, as broken objects must be locked inside, so they can be fixed and once again emerge whole again.
THE OMEGA KEY
This powerful key opens the Black Door, a portal to another realm, where parasitic demonic beings exist.
THE ECHO KEY
Ellie Whedon steals and secretly uses this key, which reveals its horrifying ability to bring people back from the dead… but as a former shadow of themselves, aka an “echo.”
THE SHADOW KEY
This must be placed in the Crown of Shadows, which then allows the wearer to control a host of shadow monsters, with all of them taking whatever shape the wearer wishes them to.
THE TIMESHIFT KEY
The most recent trailer for Season 3 unlocked the power of time travel with the aptly-named Timeshift Key. Bode's use of this temporal door-opener thrusts him back in time to the 18th century, where he meets with his ancestor, Benjamin Locke.
THE BESTIARY KEY
Like the Time shift Key, the Animal Key is pretty self-explanatory: it turns the user into an animal! More specifically, however, it is said to unleash one's "inner animal."
Designs
The designs for the keys are very clever and unique and I love how each head is made to represent the keys individual power. My favourites from the show have to be:
The Time sift Key is absolutely amazing looking and I love how it has an actual hourglass that you can rotate. One thing I don’t see particularly useful is having the little clock underneath. I feel like it would’ve looked a lot better and even a bit mysterious without it.
Tumblr media
The Mending Key is one of my favourites due to it’s very original looking design. Though, I find it interesting that they went with the design of a caduceus, known as the symbol of Hermes, instead of using the staff of Asclepius, Greek God of healing and medicine. Since the power of the key is mending .
Tumblr media
The last one is the Creation Key. Since they key is a drawing tool, having Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Mans as it’s head was very inspired.
Tumblr media
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Pauline Diana Baynes was an English illustrator, author and commercial artist. She contributed drawings and paintings to more than 200 books, mostly in the children's genre. She was the first illustrator of some of J. R. R. Tolkien's minor works and of C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia.
Most of her paintings seem to be done in ink and watercolour, I really like the realistic style that sometimes seems to adapt a get more child friendly features, like animals smiling and bright and colourful shapes and backgrounds.
Tumblr media
Another thing I really like about Baynes’ work is its fluidity. I see this a lot in her book covers. There is a lot of movement coming from either the background (e.g trees moving in the wind, birds flying) or the characters playing or dancing around, which is a lot more fun and eye catching for young children. Nothing ever is static.
Tumblr media
The details in some of her work is pretty impressing, especially since everything is done by hand, in ink and paints. All the little pen strokes on the animals fur really add depth and shadow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A while ago I have done a similar artwork and I tried to adapt it a bit to make it look more like it was done in a similar style as Baynes’. I also used some watercolour texture, hoping that this will further amplify some kind of resemblance.
