"Little one, when you play, Don't you mind what they say -- Let those eyes sparkle and shine, Never a tear, baby of mine...
If they knew sweet little you, They'd end up loving you too... All those same people who scold you, What they'd give just for the right to hold you..."

Hey, all! This is my entry for #ockiss24, organized by @ockissweek, depicting my OC, Lane Bach Cromwell, kissing her eight-year-old son Jacob goodnight! For those of you wondering where my girl Carewyn is, well, she IS in the picture, even if you can't see her...because this is set in 1972, the year Carewyn was born! (Lane's in her second trimester.)
But yeah, prior to Carewyn's birth, Jacob's life was...not great. From not getting on with his clean-cut, conventional Muggle father Evan to being completely alone and outcasted at school because of his "delinquent" outbursts (in truth evidence of very powerful underage magic), Jacob was a very unhappy child. Partly to vent his frustrations and resentments, Jacob would act out and disrespect or even flat-out ignore his teachers, which this year in particular almost resulted in him not being allowed to go on to year 4 of primary school. It was only his distinctly average grades at the time that kept that from happening, because no, boy genius Jacob was not having trouble with any of the material: he was just bored as all get-out and hated jumping through hoops for people who looked down their noses at him. Even so, the conference that Evan and Lane had with Jacob's principal -- in which the principal ripped into Evan for his and Lane's lack of discipline and even suggested at one point that Jacob could do with a year or two of military school to straighten him out -- resulted in Evan summoning Jacob down to the dining table for a "family meeting" that night that ended up way more heated than it should've.
Evan was very stern. He told Jacob that he and Lane did not want to have to send him to military school when he was more than smart enough to know better and respect his elders -- Jacob snapped back that his teachers didn't want respect from him: they just wanted him to sit down and shut up and be a mindless little bobble-head, just like all the other kids in class, so that they could keep acting like they were smarter than the toadies they taught. For someone like Evan -- whose father had been arrested and sentenced to life in prison when Evan was a very young boy -- Jacob's lack of respect toward authority figures was very troubling. Evan scolded Jacob that he would never amount to anything worthwhile if he didn't put in the work and behave himself, and even shamed Jacob, pointing out that he and Lane had more than enough to worry about with a new baby on the way without having to punish Jacob for things he knew he shouldn't do. Jacob lashed out in response.
"Oh yeah, right, 'the baby!' The baby, the baby, the baby! Can't forget about how many more hours at work you suddenly have to put in 'because of the baby!' As if that hasn't just been a lovely little excuse for you to not be around to deal with all the stupid stuff I get blamed for -- if you'd actually been around, then maybe you would've bloody realized that I'm already getting punished, all the time, for doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG!"
From there, Evan and Jacob's tempers only flared further. Lane -- ever a pacifist and yet completely unequipped to deal with such explosive anger, thanks to her abusive childhood -- was unable to step between them or bring the temperature down...and so the fight only ended when Evan, his temper thoroughly spent, lost his head. Jacob yelled at Evan for never seeing him as anything but a troublemaker, and Evan responded in perhaps the worst possible way.
"BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE, JACOB! Every other day, I have to read a message from your teachers, or your principal -- even other parents about the trouble you get up to, and time and again, you refuse to take any responsibility for the trouble you cause! How is anyone ever going to see you as anything other than a shame and a burden, when all you ever do is cause everyone else trouble?!"
Jacob was so overwhelmed with pain and anger he couldn't properly express that he shoved his chair aside with enough force that the bottom of the legs actually somehow caught fire. Lane hurriedly rushed to put out the magical flames before Evan could pay them too much mind, but Jacob -- too emotional to even acknowledge that outburst of magic -- ran out of the dining room and upstairs to his bedroom, where he slammed the door shut with force.
Evan was regretful about what he'd said, after the fact. He didn't quite know how to broach the issue, since he still felt Jacob had done wrong and needed to own up to it before he gave their son a proper apology -- so Lane went upstairs to speak to Jacob herself, after calming Evan down and making sure she'd given Jacob enough time to cool off too. When Lane opened the door to Jacob's room, she found her poor son burying his face into his pillow, trying in vain to obscure the many messy tear tracks down his cheeks.
"Did I cause you trouble again, Mum?" was all he could mumble miserably through his pillow.
Her heart hurting, Lane brought a stool over so she could sit next to Jacob's bed. She sat near him for a while, letting Jacob vent and reassuring him multiple times that Evan was just upset: that she and he didn't just see Jacob as a burden or a troublemaker, that they loved him, and all they wanted was for him to be the amazing, talented, smart boy they knew he was. Lane wasn't sure how much Jacob believed this -- he had trouble meeting her eye, even as he changed into his pajamas and she tucked him into bed. It didn't take long for Lane to suss out why, after Jacob echoed Evan's words from earlier.
"I wasn't trying to cause trouble, Mum. Honest. I know you're not feeling well...I know you have to worry about the baby now, not me..."
It was hard to miss the miserable, faintly resentful tone to her son's words. Lane's eyes softened sadly.
"Jay...of course I'll have to worry about the baby...and yes, I might need to spend a lot of time with them, since they won't be able to clean, feed, or dress themselves yet. But just because I'll have to take care of your little brother or sister when they arrive does not mean I'll stop taking care of you. It doesn't mean I won't still be here for you, when you really need me..."
She brought a hand through Jacob's curly black-brown hair.
"Time might have limits, but love doesn't. I remember my friend Judy liked to say that love is renewable -- it's not a cake that has to get cut up into smaller pieces for more people to enjoy it. The more you love, the more love there is to go around. No matter how much I will love your baby brother or sister when they get here, it doesn't mean I will love you any less. You will always be my little Blue Jay. And I will always love you with all my heart."
Jacob wasn't even fully aware of it when he started crying again, but as his mother kissed him goodnight, he felt the tension relaxing in his shoulders. He laid back against his pillows, closing his eyes.
"...Mum?" he asked hesitantly after a moment.
"Yes, Jay?"
"Do you think the baby will like me?" he mumbled.
The doubt and uncertainty echoing through the question broke Lane's heart.
"They will love you," she said gently.
"Even if I'm nothing but a troublemaker?"
Lane frowned deeply. It truly did seem that those words of Evan's had hurt him far too deeply for Lane's reassurance alone to heal.
"You are not, have never been, and will never be 'nothing,' Jacob. ...I promise, one day, you will see what I see, when I look at you -- a smart, curious, creative, special boy...ready to take flight and take on the world. And when that day comes, I know the whole world will see it too."
Jacob's face seemed to soften a little bit, losing some of the creases in his features.
"...Thanks, Mum."
Lane's blue eyes softened as she turned off the wall light and gently closed the door to her son's room.
A few months later, Lane gave birth to Jacob's little sister, Carewyn. And true to Lane's words, the little baby she nicknamed "Winnie" loved Jacob dearly, and ended up being his first real friend in the world.

as promised the separate comics/graphic novels roundup for 2023! this is a normal post until May when I realized I could (as a graphic novel librarian) become an Eisner voter and read 54 comics in a month (and then slightly less so in August when the Harveys came up.) below a cut because it's heinously long. I'll include my little write-ups and some panels right after my faves
JANUARY
Under the Red Hood by Judd Winick and Doug Mahnke I read this January second. Begin as you mean to go on! For all its flaws (Dick's Squidward face) the emotional arc of this story puts me right into the pit about Jason Todd.
Superman: Reign of the Supermen by Dan Jurgens and others
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest (ongoing) by Mark Waid, Dan Mora, and Travis Moore First off Dan Mora draws everyone like the most beautiful people in the world, which never hurts to look at. But also this is just a really fun comic! The action is fun the characters are very sweet and we get an honest to god Superbat gem fusion
Young Justice (1998) by Peter David and Todd Nauck MY CHILDREN! I was finishing up my Tim readthrough and was so delighted to meet Kon and Cassie and Bart and Cissie and Anita (I still don't care for Lobo.) Nauck's art is cartoony in a way that fits the comic really well.
Red Robin by Christopher Yost, Fabian Nicieza, Ramón Bachs, and Marcus To THEEEEE ARC for Tim. Everyone says read Red Robin. Yes read Red Robin but also understand this is him at his worst and most scrungly. This is not normal Tim. This is Tim's failgirl era.
Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day by Judd Winick and Ale Garza
MARCH
You and a Bike and a Road by Eleanor Davis Beautiful little memoir comic about biking across the US, and also about borders and travel and isolation/togetherness.
Tumblr media
Superman for All Seasons by Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale, and Bjarne Hansen I love this comic. Tim Sale draws Clark like the biggest, softest person you've ever seen, and Bjarne Hansen's colors are so gentle. (if you remember the rock metaphor from mission parameters, it's inspired by this scene from Book 1: Spring)
Tumblr media
APRIL
Superman: Lost by Christopher Priest and Carlos Parlaguyan (ongoing) This series cuts right to the horror of being Superman and also the horror of being Lois Lane SO deftly. a few plot points I don't love but overall God it makes me miserable
Tumblr media
Birds of Maine by Michael Deforge A delightful, dreamy collection of comics about birds living in a utopian society on the moon. The art is weird, the story is weird, everything about it is lovely.
Tumblr media
MAY
Divinity v1-2 by Matt Kindt and Trevor Hairsine
The City of Belgium by Brecht Evans This is not a perfect graphic novel but the stuff it does with art and page and rhythm is so so phenomenal.
Tumblr media
Lights, Planets, People! by Lizzy Stewart and Molly Naylor
Killadelphia v1-3 by Rodney Barnes, Jason Shawn Alexander, and Christopher Mitten
The Department of Truth v1-4 by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds This is a book about conspiracy theories and it is DEEPLY unsettling. Martin Simmonds' art makes me legitimately queasy to look at. Really really good but also it did send me into a little spiral for a bit.
Tumblr media
Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely (Mat Lopes' colors also deserve a shoutout) This book made me cry! Also I have yet to read another Kara comic because this one was so good and I'm afraid the others won't be. She's sharp and angry in all the best ways and also deeply deeply caring and good. Capes meets space fantasy at its best. I would die for Ruthye
Tumblr media
Nightwing (2016) v1-2 by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo
Batman: One Bad Day: The Riddler by Tom King and Mitch Gerads
She-Hulk (2022) v1-2 by Rainbow Rowell, Luca Maresca, Rogê Antônio, and Takeshi Miyazawa
Superman: Space Age by Mike Russell and Michael Allred
Revenge of the Librarians by Tom Gauld
Pinball: A Graphic History of the Silver Ball by Jon Chad
Down to the Bone: A Leukemia Story by Catherine Pioli
So Much for Love: How I Survived a Toxic Relationship by Sophie Lambda
Welcome to St. Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure by Lewis Hancox
Chef’s Kiss by Jarrett Melendez and Danica Brine
Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser and Robyn Smith
Animal Castle v1 by Xavier Dorison and Felix Delep
Bungleton Green and the Mystic Commandos by Jay Jackson
Flung Out of Space: Inspired by the Indecent Adventures of Patricia Highsmith by Grace Ellis and Hannah Templer Masterclass in writing a biopic that doesn't shy away from its subject's being kind of a wretched person while also producing art that is deeply meaningful to many, many people.
Rain by Joe Hill and Zoe Thorogood
Tiki: A Very Ruff Year by David Azencot and Fred Leclerc
Ten Days in a Madhouse by Nellie Bly, adapted by Brad Ricca and Courtney Sieh
Ultrasound by Conor Stechschulte
Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes, The Graphic Album (various)
A Visit to Moscow by Rabbi Rafael Grossman, adapted by Anna Olswanger and Yevgenia Nayberg
Look Back by Tatsuki Fujimoto
Shuna’s Journey by Hayao Miyazaki
Come Over Come Over by Lynda Barry
It’s So Magic by Lynda Barry
My Perfect Life by Lynda Barry What a lovely collection of comics. Barry captures being a teen in all its mess and glory.
Macanudo: Welcome to Elsewhere by Liniers
Always Never by Jordi Lafebre
The Pass by Espé
Mary Jane and Black Cat Beyond
Moon Knight: Black, White and Blood by Jed Mackay and Carlos Villa
The Nice House on the Lake v1-2 by James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno (Jordie Bellaire colors) I know Tynion can do horror, but he really really can do horror. This is like Glass Onion meets the worst nightmare you've ever had, and the way it unfolds is masterful. Martínez Bueno's art is dreamy and unsettling, especially combined with Bellaire who colors like she's painting oil slicks.
Tumblr media
A Vicious Circle by Mattson Tomlin and Lee Bermejo
Booster Gold (1986) by Dan Jurgens Booster my friend Booster. I really didn't expect this to be as FUN as it is! There are occasional storylines that drag but overall a delight.
The Human Target v1-2 by Tom King and Greg Smallwood
Heartstopper v2-4 by Alice Oseman
Killer Queens by David Booher and Claudia Balboni
I Hate This Place v1 by Kyle Starks and Artyom Topilin I really need to read v2 because this was so fun. Queer backwoods horror, sarcastic, delightful, and never heavy-handed. I read this right after Killer Queens, which read like someone fed a bunch of Drag Race episodes and 2012 tumblr posts into a comics generator, and Heartstopper, which was so blandly unobjectionable I actually forgot I'd read it, so I Hate This Place felt refreshing as hell. (actually while looking up screencaps I remember why I didn't read v2 which is that v1 has a LOT of gore and body horror and I gotta be careful with that stuff. however if you like a slasher go forth)
Tumblr media
It’s Lonely at the Center of the Earth by Zoe Thorogood Gut punch on every page. Thorogood's art is weird and wild. It does feel a bit as though she's opened up her ribs for us to peruse.
Tumblr media
Chivalry by Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran
Sensory: Life on the Spectrum (various)
Cryptid Club by Sarah Andersen
Public Domain v1 by Chip Zdarsky
Love Everlasting v1 by Tom King and Elsa Charretier
Mazebook by Jeff Lemire A twisting fable about grief and the paths it takes you down. A lot of the Eisner noms had dead wives or daughters which I began to resent, but I gave this a pass because it was really, really beautiful.
Tumblr media
Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands by Kate Beaton Everyone has told you it's good! oh it's good. Beaton's style, which I associate more with her humor work, at first feels somewhat at war with the subject matter, but it ended up really working for me.
Days of Sand by Aimee DeJongh
Talk to My Back by Yamada Murasaki This was one of my favorite books of the whole year. Beautiful meditation on the compromises of marriage and motherhood in beautiful, sparse drawings that lingered with me long after I'd finished reading.
Tumblr media
Crushing by Sophie Burrows
JUNE
Do a Powerbomb by Daniel Warren Johnson Do you like wrestling? I don't really care about it, but I do love weird wacky stories about grief and trying to fight your way through the afterlife to get your mom back. Both hilarious and poignant. The art is as bombastic as it needs to be.
Tumblr media
The Night Eaters v1 by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda Liu and Takeda are back! This time with some horror about a pair of siblings and their fucked up parents. Great stuff.
Tumblr media
Ripple Effects by Jordan Hart and Bruno Chiroleu
Superman: Up in the Sky by Tom King and Andy Kubert Oh the Clark Kent of it all. the panel where Clark is calling home from alien customs because he has flown to the ends of the universe for one little girl is really what got me in this one
Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross
Superman: American Alien by Max Landis and various artists
Superman Red and Blue (anthology) This is a whole lot of writers and a whole lot of artists and all of them are excellent. Once again the Clark Kent emotion is happening to me.
JULY
Superman: Birthright by Mark Waid and Leinil Francis Yu
Superman (2011) v5-6 by Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder
Superman: Warworld by Philip Kennedy Johnson and various artists
Justice League International by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire Booster my friend Booster is here and also so are all of my other new friends. I loved the initial run (though it has its weak spots) but then I had to slog through a lot of very bad later stuff.
AUGUST
Blue and Gold by Dan Jurgens and Ryan Sook
New Teen Titans (various Brother Blood issues) by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez
Acting Class by Nick Drnaso
Follow Me Down: A Reckless Book by Ed Brubaker
Girl Juice by Benji Nate
Little Monsters v1 by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen
Mimosa by Archie Bongiovanni
Who Will Make the Pancakes by Megan Kelso
Cat + Gamer by Wataru Nadatani
Goodbye, Eri by Tatsuki Fujimoto
Spy x Family v1-2 by Tatsuya Endo
Alice on the Run: One Child’s Journey Through the Rwandan Civil War by Gaspard Talmasse
Ashes by Álvaro Ortiz
The Extraordinary Part: Book One: Orsay’s Hands by Florent Ruppert and Jérôme Mulot The art and story here are simply so fabulous. A better world is possible and sometimes you have to take direct action to make it!
Tumblr media
SEPTEMBER
Batman RIP by Grant Morrison and Tony S. Daniel
Batman Incorporated by Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham
Batman and Robin (2011) by Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason I've talked about this one before but I think it is truly one of my favorite depictions of Bruce as father in all the ways he succeeds and all the ways he fails. John Kalisz's luminous colors also deserve a shoutout.
OCTOBER
Batman: Failsafe and Gotham War by literally everyone currently working in DC but especially Zdarsky
Birds of Prey (1999) by Chuck Dixon and then Gail Simone and a number of other people (this continued into November and December) This made the worms in my brain wriggle so bad that I wrote a whole yuri zine piece about Dinah and Babs, coming to a PDF (or physical copy!) near you soon!
DECEMBER
Dungeon Meshi v1-11 by Ryoko Kui Is it romantic to devour and be devoured in turn? Ryoko Kui sure thinks so. I was hungry the whole time I was making these my bedtime reading.
Through the Woods by Emily Carroll Emily Carroll is among the best to ever do it. This collection of stories is her at her unsettling best.
When I Arrived at the Castle by Emily Carroll
Batgirl (2000) v1-3 by Kelley Puckett and Damion Scott thanks to Mssrs Puckett and Scott I am now fully unhinged about Cass Cain and her quest for immolation. the art in this is so stylized but so well-done, especially given how little text is in much of the series. when the paneling hits it HITS.
Tumblr media
Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive by everyone working at DC in 2002 When a good crossover storyline works, it really really works. I love to see Bruce completely blow up his life because he doesn't see any point in existing outside the cowl anymore. Even more do I love to see the fallout from this on everyone who loves him! delight delight delight.
and that's everything I read this year!! god there was a lot of it. I liked a lot of the stuff I didn't bold, but also I hated some of it. please feel free to talk to me about any of it!!!

hellooo, me again, what modern artists/songs do you think the m6/courtiers would like? •3•
OKAY OKAY I LOVE THIS
Asra💜:
Okay I kinda feel like Asra likes like Arabic rap and like some chill lofi.
He definitely listens to like lofi girl comps for sure but like also Wegz and Freek and stuff
Oh also I feel like he kind of likes lots of indie tiktok musicians for some reasons and has a pretty diverse music taste.
Except for country.
He hates country.
Julian🦠:
BLP Kosher DNDUEJEHS NO IM KIDDING
Okay okay but for real though I think he's kind of a jazz and klezmer genre type of guy (im NOT PROJECTING YALL I SWEAR)
Okay so I think some of the main music or artists he would listen to would be like Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, probs the Jewish Starlight Orchestra (NOT PROJECTING I PROMISE), the Klezmatics, just lots of general jazz and klezmer
I feel like he has like, a personal thing against hip hop, though.
Muriel💙:
I don't really know for him 😰😰😰
NDHDSHDB IM SORRY
I just don't know what to do for him I'm sorry y'all 😭 if any of you have ideas in the comments let me go
Nadia💎:
I just feel like she's like a super big musical fan but like she's SO picky with her musicals
Like her favorite type of musical is Indian musicals but she does have her fair share of other fav musicals (Legally Blonde)
Her favorite musical is totally Ram Leela and no guys it's not because that my favorite musical
She always has an earbud in one ear wherever she goes so she has like a million wireless earbuds and also Spotify premium, apple music, and everything lol
Oh but I kind of feel like she kind of likes mitski idk why
Portia🧡:

hello!! hope you're doing fine 👉👈
firstly i'd love to say that your blog is one of my faves... like, both among mclennon and just in general.
so, um. i appreciate your opinion and takes on john/paul/mclennon/etc, and it would be interesting to hear your thoughts about john's psysical violence towards, you know... cynthia and just women.
i know that cynthia mentioned in her book that he only hit her once when they were teens, but recently i've found these posts:
https://at.tumblr.com/phoneybeatlemania/cynthia-lennon-abuse-and-historiography/xsbd2ric6j2m
https://at.tumblr.com/phoneybeatlemania-bit-the-dust/i-think-the-main-reason-john-is-canceled-is-how/tki6lwkt49w2
and... it's not that i despice john now. i've always kept in mind his own confession in the playboy interview... i just can't help feel a bit of guilty for my warm emotions towards him.
what do you think of it? and sorry if it's something you've already discussed on your blog.
thank you, have a nice day!!
It's not my first time addressing this topic, you're right lol
You'll find that diving into the personal lives of these men, they weren't perfect, they weren't always good, and just like a large portion of famous musicians, behaved in ways not many of us can justify or condone.
I've come to terms with who John was, I've squared it with myself.
I know the history, I've done my digging, from Thelma Pickles to Cynthia to Yoko, to May, and to the end with Yoko again.
You might not like my answer, but all I can find myself to say in the simplest of terms: John was the best he could be.
Cynthia admits he was neither sinner nor saint. It was apparent that Cynthia loved him, despite the flaws, despite the incident of him striking her (which took much of John grovelling and pleading to her to give him another chance) despite his inability or instability to not be a good father, despite her efforts.
Could John have been better? Sure, totally, no argument there.
While it's despicable for a man to hit a woman (entirely outside of self defense), I think it's important to point out that John simply had a problem with physically striking out at anyone. Being inebriated or intoxicated seemed to make his propensity towards losing his temper and physically lash out greater. John probably could've killed Bob Wooler. He would start fights. Paul was designated as John's keeper for many reasons and one was to typically calm him down, because an irritate John could escalate. Mal Evans was great to have for his size, being able to grab hold of John and physically restrain him if necessary (like the Bob Wooler incident).
Anyway my point is John's physicality was not restricted or targeted just at women. He had issues, clearly, and one was the fact John had no real grip with his temperament, and if drugs or alcohol were involved that just made him much less predictable and, unfortunately, dangerous.
That being said...
If we're going to nail John to the wall for all his inexcusable behavior or actions, then I can only hope the other three should be nailed to the wall beside him.
Perhaps adultery can be better excused, but it's no secret Ringo had literally beaten his ex-wife black and blue (Barbara Bach), to the point Ringo believed he had killed her after a particular bender. Of course, at that time, Ringo was apparently dealing with his own issues with substance abuse.
It's still rather inexcusable, though it's hardly ever brought up. Ringo is peace and love, he wasn't as caustic and loud as John, or perhaps not as zeroed in on for his own demons.
I don't feel guilty. I don't think I ever once felt guilty for my love of John because I've nothing to feel sorry or guilty for. Am I, as a fan, supposed to apologize and prostrate my associated guilt, for every time I love and admire John Lennon?
No. It's not my fault he wasn't perfect. I never expected him to be, anyway. I wouldn't expect fans of Ringo to feel guilty, or bad, for their love and admiration towards him. Why should I?
Just because we love someone in history, for the things they did, the person they appeared to be the majority of time, their mark on the world, their beauty and charm—doesn't mean we condone and justify all that they did or behaved like.
Funnily enough, none of his wives described him as an abuser or woman beater. Cynthia wasn't stupid, I hardly doubt she would have continued to love John and continued to talk about him in the way she did, not just honestly, but lovingly, if he had been the monster we're all supposed to deem him as. Cynthia died loving John, even when he had hurt her, disappointed her, let her down... Because she loved the man, and better understood him than any of us outsiders could.
Similarly, May never described John as an abuser or woman beater. I don't believe May was an idiot either. She cared for John, she knew him, she saw what the drugs and alcohol abuse did to him. She tried her best, despite being young and incapable of handling a mess like John, to help him. She saw what we never will.
Even Yoko, though the need to perpetrate the Yoko&John love myth and legend, she'd never gone as far to describe John as an abuser or woman beater. We know how toxic and abusive their relationship was, really. John was probably at his worse then, he was. And you must think, if Yoko stans can justify and excuse and even ignore the fact Yoko is actually quite an unlikeable person who has done unlikeable things, then why is it I cannot love John, for all he is, even when I've acknowledged the fact John's done things I could never excuse.
John was great, and John was terrible, and I love him, and I don't feel sorry nor do I feel the need to justify myself at any point because Cynthia, May, Yoko, nor Paul, have never felt sorry or guilty for loving John openly and unapologetically.
Even with Ringo, him and Barbara are still together, even after all that, even after Ringo had thoroughly trashed her to the point people who found her thought she was dead.
Que sera, sera, I can't say Ringo nor John were abusers, but products of their time, and of the culture, and of the substance abuse, and in the end...
Could be the best they could be. At least Ringo has had time to be better and to try and reconcile and repent for his past behavior and actions.
So my final say to this, for you, is: square it with yourself. If you can't accept these uncomfortable and, often inexcusable parts of John, then you can't. If you can, if you can accept the fact he wasn't all that great of a person, at least not always, because who is? Really? Then that's all you need to know.
I love John, I can relate to a lot about him, as a person, flawed and imperfect and full of sin. I'm not sorry, I don't feel guilty, because it's not my doing and my fault for how he was and who he is. He wasn't evil incarnate to me, he was just some man that had issues and problems and made terrible decisions and hurt others but so did the other Beatles and so have most if not everyone in the music industry. I don't know, maybe that makes me a hypocrite, or biased, but if that's all then that's all. This is just how I like, feel man.
Hope my answer isn't too much of a convoluted mess, and I hope it answered your questions 💟

consider it a what if scenario in this instance, but how would jacob and carewyn's dad react to hearing how one graduated with honors from the very school that once expelled him, and the other going on to become a well respected lawyer? lets say that it was by pure chance he heard of other people talking about the two and put two and two together.
not that hed go out of his way to reach out to them but moreso his realization how the two managed to achieve the respectable lives he so desperately wanted them to, but without him in the picture. how would that make him feel?
Okay, this message gave me such joy that I had to set it aside to give it a full response, because AWWW, ANON, YOU THINKING OF POOR, BAD-FATHER-BUT-NOT-A-BAD-MAN EVAN BACH!! You sweet thing!! 🥹 💙💙💙
So I actually do have a few headcanons about Evan after he left his wife and children behind, one of which ties in nicely to your question.
A few days after his departure, Evan was visited by an Obliviator from the Ministry of Magic. That Obliviator's name was Donna.
In most cases of Muggles learning that their child and/or spouse has magic, that Muggle doesn't leave or divorce their spouse, so there was some concern that Evan could blab about the entire Wizarding World's existence, if he were allowed to keep his memories of his family. This is why Donna was sent to tail Evan and, when the time was right, covertly modify his memory. But to Donna's surprise, while she tailed Evan Bach, she was surprised to discover that he made no attempt whatsoever to expose Lane, their children, or the existence of magic. Evan didn't even flinch when his friends or family would try to get the truth of his and Lane's separation out of him -- he would just firmly and unwaveringly say that Lane lied to him and then shut down the conversation altogether before it could go any further. He never even tried to make up lies about Lane, like that she was involved in criminal activity or something, so as to better justify his actions. He would shoot down anyone proposing nasty, untrue things about his ex-wife and seemed to resignedly accept it if anyone judged him badly for leaving his family. And this was why, after a whole week of not having to intervene, Donna finally just decided to visit Evan in person and explain the situation to him.
"Look, Mr. Bach -- your situation is...unusual, in our world. It just is. Most Muggle parents who find out their child has magic, well...they choose their child. They choose to stay married for their sake -- to keep their family together. Even I must admit, I can't understand why you wouldn't make that choice..." "Well, of course not. You're magic too, aren't you? Like Lane, and Jacob. Of course you wouldn't understand. ...I didn't ask to join this 'World' of yours. I never even had a proper choice in the matter. And even if you think I should've just followed my wife and children blindly, I have no interest in being part of a World made up of nothing but lies and deception. And I frankly think it's disgusting that you think it's best to just rewrite people's minds and lives if they don't march lockstep with...with your blatant despotism." "Despotism? Come now, that's a bit harsh..." "Sorry if I don't see a government who would arrange for you to stalk me and then corner me in some dark alley just to keep their precious secrets safe in a particularly flattering light." "It's not just for the sake of our secrets, Mr. Bach. ...Yes, it is true, I was sent to Obliviate you. But your situation isn't just surprising because of your departure -- it's also how you've acted after leaving. You never once made as if to expose Lane or your children's magic. You've never even tried to defend yourself from rumors by making Lane look bad." "Why would I? Lane lied to me. ...Anyone who knows me knows that's enough reason." "I think a lot of people would want to create additional reasons. Make themselves look better, by doing so. You're an honorable man, Evan Bach. That's why you've never fought back to defend yourself, when people get upset about what you did. That's why you couldn't talk about your children, when your cousin pressed you about them. And that's why...I'm here talking to you, not sneaking around anymore behind your back. ...You see...I want to ask you, myself. Do you want me to modify your memory?" "...Want it?" "Yes. I could remove the painful memories of what happened -- give you a more peaceful life, to remember. I could even rewrite the memories of the people around you, so they won't ask about your family anymore...maybe even give you that promotion you would've gotten, if it weren't for your boss catching wind of what happened with your family. You could start fresh -- " "Never." "What?" "Never. I don't want your fancy stick anywhere near my mind, nor my memories." "But you...you've already said you have no intention of being part of your family's World. If you want nothing to do with the Wizarding World, and you don't want to have to keep lying by omission...wouldn't it be so much easier to just forget our World even exists?" "Of course it would! Naturally it'd be easier. But I don't want this to be easy. ...I left my wife and children, Madam. I may have my reasons for what I did, but that doesn't change the fact that I failed. I failed them as a husband, as a father...as the man of the house, and as a man overall. And worst of all...I left without even saying goodbye. I couldn't even look my wife in the face. ...I couldn't even apologize to my son...knowing he never would've accepted it anyway. Knowing that he'll hate me for the rest of his life, same as I resented my own father. ...I am a coward, Madam. It's something I never wished to be, but I proved it before God, with what I did. ...But even though I couldn't rescue my family from themselves -- from this crazy, asinine 'World' that your lot has roped them into...I do not want to be rescued from this burden. Least of all by one of your kind. ...One of the last things Lane said to me is that all I did in our marriage was make more and more mistakes, just trying to escape from my previous ones. Well, I'm done running. These mistakes I've made -- all of them -- are my burden to bear...and I don't want you or any other...freak Ministry agent taking them away from me. ...I don't want peace. Especially not your version of it."
Despite Evan's clear dislike of magic users, Donna couldn't help but by moved by his sentiment. And so she left Evan with all of his memories and reported back to her superiors that Evan Bach was no threat to Ministry security. Amazingly, after watching the Muggle store manager for another month, Donna's superiors eventually agreed, and Evan Bach was left to his own devices.
Evan had no further contact with the Wizarding World for the next thirteen years. It was only in 1988 when Donna sought Evan out at his office, in disguise as a manager of another store. He was not pleased to see her.
"I thought I made it quite clear I want nothing more to do with your World. What are you doing here?" "Nothing business-related this time, Mr. Bach. I'm just here to thank you." "...Thank me? For what?" "Your daughter." "...My...?" "Yes. Carewyn Cromwell. That was Lane's maiden name, wasn't it?" "...It was. But I don't..." "I have a daughter too...Chiara's her name. She's the same age as Carewyn. She has...a condition that makes it very difficult for her to make friends. But earlier this year, your daughter reached out to her, and since then, Chiara hasn't been able to stop talking about how wonderful your daughter is. In letters, at home...all she's been able to talk about is how kind and selfless and brave and amazing Carewyn is. So I came to thank you, Mr. Bach...for being the reason my daughter has such a good friend."
Evan was so speechless that for a moment, all he could do was stand up, cross to the window, and look out. Donna Lobosca tilted her head a bit, watching him carefully. Then, feeling some pity, she offered --
"...Chiara sent me a picture with the two of them together. Would you like to -- ?" "No. ...Winnie is one of your kind. Lane raised her to be just like her. Like Jacob. Anything she is...I can take no credit for." "I wouldn't say that. You're Carewyn's father, aren't you? That means half of her genes, and half of everything she is, comes from you."
This sentiment didn't comfort Evan, though. He refused to turn around and face Donna again.
"...Please leave."
Despite the detachment of his posture, his expression reflected in the glass of his window betrayed genuine remorse and pain. It made Donna not press him further, and instead return to him some privacy. It was clear to her at least that Evan was hesitant to engage with Carewyn, even from afar. He'd left her at such a young age that she likely didn't even remember him, so she undoubtedly was shaped more by Lane and Jacob than by him. She would never be a "normal" Muggle the way Evan wanted -- how could she be, if she was the type to befriend a werewolf? And perhaps Evan might've felt that he didn't deserve any praise, not even indirectly, for any good his daughter had done.
Donna had to wonder if Evan Bach had shed any tears, upon passing up the opportunity to see how his daughter had grown. Perhaps he would've, if he'd taken stock of how much Carewyn's ears and thin lips resembled his.
Evan didn't learn anything more of his children until the spring of 1991, when Donna actually used the Muggle Post to send Evan a letter. Evan didn't want to open it and actually fancied for a short time chucking it right into the fire -- but reluctantly he held back the urge and, settling down in his old armchair, he opened it. Inside he found a short note, with a smaller envelope inside.
Mr. Bach, I know the last time we met, you didn't want to see Carewyn's picture -- but enclosed are some photographs of your son and daughter from their and my daughter Chiara's graduation ceremony. Jacob truly is remarkable -- he received a certificate of merit for earning all O's on his NEWTs: a very, very rare achievement, only achieved by the most intelligent and talented of wizards. As for Carewyn, she graduated as Head Girl for her class and, according to Chiara, is set to become a lawyer for our Ministry -- a very respectable career in both your World and ours, I should think. I shall say it again, Mr. Bach -- whether you believe it or not, half of what these children are came from you. You should be very proud. Donna
Evan read the note several more times in silence. Then, putting it and the other smaller envelope away in the drawer of his side table, he left them there as he went to the kitchen to make himself some supper. He wouldn't open his drawer again until the following week, when looking for a pair of scissors, and when he did, he shut it quickly, unable to look at the note or second envelope.
Jacob, earning honors in all his classes. Honors. Jacob had never been good in school -- he'd always been a slacker: a delinquent, who constantly got himself into trouble. How was Evan supposed to feel, knowing that his son was succeeding, but only in that World of delinquents and liars, rather than in normal, proper society, the way Evan had always dreamed? He'd always known Jacob was smart -- he definitely could've become a doctor someday, or perhaps worked in a well-respected lab somewhere, if he'd really applied himself...
And Carewyn...Head Girl, and now set to become a lawyer? How respectable would that have been, if she was actually going to be a real lawyer -- one Evan could've recommended to his friends and associates, if they needed legal advice? Instead, all the legal advice she'd be giving out would be perfectly worthless -- her whole career would instead be based entirely on laws like the one that tried to demand Evan either give up and stay with Lane out of duress or have his mind turned inside out...
It took Evan nearly half a year before he finally forced himself to take that second smaller envelope out of his side table drawer and open it. He was alarmed by how the pictures moved -- poor Evan had never seen any magical photographs before, and they were incredibly unnerving. The girl who had to be Carewyn kept looking away, off into the corner of the frame. She appeared rather respectable, despite how bizarre her and everyone else's attire was -- her makeup was very neat. And the boy next to her...no...that couldn't be Jacob, could it? He couldn't possibly be so young...Evan himself was in his fifties, so Jacob would have to be nearing thirty by now --
And yet...even with how messy and ridiculous his hair looked, or how youthful his face appeared...Evan immediately knew at once that this was indeed his son. His eyes were hollowed-out like a skull's now, and his dark curls had grown so long and out-of-control that he'd had to tie them back in a ribbon the way a girl would...but it was Jacob. And clinging onto his sister and mother, Jacob's moving photographic self couldn't seem to stop silently laughing through his tears.
He was happy. So happy he was crying...
Evan had to put the pictures of his children face down on his side table, out of his line of sight. He then rested his arms in his lap, holding his face in his hands and then sliding them down along his cheeks as he breathed deeply.
He knew seeing Jacob and Carewyn would be painful. He knew it would be -- that's why he'd resisted it for so long. He'd rebuilt his life to the best of his ability, even while wrestling with his guilt, but he'd kept them at arm's length because he knew that Jacob and Carewyn didn't want to be in his world, and he wanted nothing to do with theirs. They didn't belong in his world, no more than he belonged in theirs. And truly, there was no point in trying to dig up the past when that wasn't going to change.
It didn't mean it didn't hurt, knowing that he'd failed as a father so much that Jacob and Carewyn's lives were fuller, with him not in it.
After a long moment, Evan reached out toward the side table again. He fiddled with the edge of the last photograph for a few seconds before finally flipping it around and looking at it.
Lane looked tired. Her face had become a bit gaunter and there were more wrinkles around her eyes, though not as bad as Jacob and Carewyn's -- Evan couldn't help but think that their eyes looked like his now, with how deep the bags under them were...
Even so...Lane smiled just as brightly as she did on their wedding day.
And it was this, strangely, that seemed to soften the creases in Evan's brow, even as tears welled up in his eyes.
Evan had failed his family in so many ways. He hadn't been able to guide them and mentor them -- to protect them and give them everything they wished for. To keep them on the straight and narrow, the way he always tried to be. But even with this...Lane had found happiness. She clearly hadn't had to go back to her cruel family -- she clearly had kept her freedom and was able to thrive, even on her own. Even while having their children to look after...
And this, strangely, brought Evan some bizarre, bittersweet kind of comfort. Perhaps, in the end...letting his family find happiness without him ultimately was the one thing he'd managed to do right.

Sakamoto, his management said, privately worked on the 33-song collection “to be played at his own funeral to accompany his passing.” The collection includes classical works by Bach, Debussy, and Ravel. It opens with an 11-minute piece from Sakamoto collaborator Alva Noto. There are soundtrack pieces from Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota, as well as works by David Sylvian and Bill Evans Trio. It closes with Laurel Halo’s “Breath” from 2020’s Possessed.

CONSIDERING KEITH JARRETT’S AMERICAN QUARTET
At the end of February, pianist/critic Ethan Iverson called his Transitional Technology/Do the Math readers’ attention to an YouTube interview with Keith Jarrett conducted by Rick Beato. Besides archival performances, commentary, and conversation, there were incredibly poignant latter-day one handed performances. Post-strokes the genius is still there, but it is cut literally in half.
Keith Jarrett was hugely influential on me as a new jazz fan. As with so many, that he played with Miles Davis (electric piano and organ (!?!) on at Fillmore and Live-Evil) put him on my radar. I had the Bremen/Lausanne solo concerts even before the justly legendary Koln. I had Belonging by the European Quartet and Reflections and Fort Yawuh with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian. I also really liked the album with Gary Burton from this same period. More on that later.
I liked my albums and played them frequently. When the 10 discs of Sun Bear came out as the next solo concerts, that was too expensive for me to be a completist. As remarkable as Bremen/Lausanne and Koln were, I felt I knew what Jarrett was up to. Those vamps, melodies, gospel elements, free breakdowns were also present in the band records. It was all conceptually fascinating, but the experiments and juxtapositions were always adventurous but not always successful. In the moment, there too I thought I had a bead on what was going on, but didn’t think I needed more.
When I returned to the music, the Standards Trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette better suited my aesthetic. I found “my” albums again and gave them a single fond refamiliarizing listen. I have now listened to all the American Quartet albums and a 3 1/2 hours playlist derived from Iverson’s extensive, tune-by-tune review of the band’s entire output. He is quite impressed with the later Shades of Jazz and some of Bya-Blue too.
But with those exceptions, I don’t think I missed that much and so bristle a little bit at the suggestion that this was the last great band. As a contrarian, I nominate the Dave Holland Quintet and maybe Woody Shaw’s band. But it was something special—a young phenom recruits the elders Paul Motian from THE Bill Evans Trio and Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden from Ornette Coleman and ambitiously mashes them up with elements of his own aesthetic from the solo concerts.
It’s an interesting mix—Motian’s free sense of time up against Haden’s solidity with Redman’s earthy primitivism at the service of Jarrett’s capacious vision. Again, it’s not always successful, but they are unavoidably interesting.
Iverson doubles down on a judgment drawn from initial reportage that Jarrett didn’t do his bebop homework because of this:
“In the Beato video, Jarrett says that when he was finding his voice, he didn’t want to play modal like McCoy Tyner. He then says he wanted to be more “Bach-ian,” meaning voice-leading in the contrapuntal European tradition like Bach.”
So, yes, Jarrett has a cerebrality that maybe wears thin or that prompts admiration first with affection following—or not.
But the other interesting idea is that there is a Midwestern “country” or at least folk aesthetic that draws on major chords. Iverson draws a line that also includes Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Gary Burton, and even Ornette—and maybe Fred Hersch from Cincinnati belongs too. And that makes the Jarrett/Burton album stand out as probably the best Jarrett band album. Burton and Steve Swallow with his compositions structure and rein in Jarrett while he adds to a tough appealing set.
I am left after this valuable exercise with fond memories and admiration for Keith Jarrett, but my affection still lags.
