Next read!
Since I'm going to my local comic expo next week, and am of course bringing a book, I decided to read a smaller mass-market paperback that's easy to carry around. I might finish this before the expo, which means choosing another small book, but that's all right because I have quite a stockpile of them on my TBR.

You can't force people to love you.
You can't force people to engage with you.
You can't force people to feel anything for you.
All you can really control are your own thoughts and reactions.
Perhaps everything will start to fall into place when we stop giving a shit about what other people think and finally start taking care of ouselves first.

So, you know the Dragon Age 2 quest “Act of Mercy,” where you are trying to prevent a bunch of escaped mages  from being slaughtered out on the Wounded Coast? Yesterday, I found a follow-up that I’d never seen before.**
My rogue Hawke (Eleanor) let the mages go out of sympathy (she has a mage sister), and her BFF Varric lied to the templars, convincing them that all the mages were dead except for the leader, Decimus (who Hawke, Varric, Anders, and Merrill had already killed). Fine, right? The templars head in one direction, the mages head in another, and voila, freedom!
...except that in the next act, Hawke had to go to the Gallows (former slave prison, now essentially mage prison) to talk to a templar who was investigating a serial killer, and who should she see there but one of the escaped mages, Grace.  So I clicked on her, and she started chewing Hawke out.
“Yes, they recaptured us! What did you think was going to happen? No food, no supplies, only a moment’s head start...”
Meanwhile, Hawke was thinking, “Lady, I gave you exactly what you begged for. I let you and your people escape, and I distracted the templars, sending them to exactly where you weren’t. What did you expect me to do, become a dragon and fly you to Orlais?”
Not very charitable of Hawke, I suppose. But Grace annoyed her.
**The scene’s in the Dragon Age Wiki. I just wasn’t aware of it.

Sometimes I wish we would start calling out the performative radicalism on this site for the poser bullshit it is. "Remember, it's always morally correct to kill a cop!" "Don't forget to firebomb your local government office!" "Wow, it sure would be a shame if these instructions on how to make a molotov cocktail got spread around!"
Okay. But you're not killing cops or firebombing government offices. You are posting on a dying microblogging website to a carefully-curated echo chamber that has radicalized itself into thinking that taking the absolute most extreme position on any subject is praxis but that anyone discussing the most practical way to effect actual change is your sworn enemy. You do not have the street cred OR the activist cred to be talking about killing cops, babe.

"A story doesn't need a theme in order to be good" I'm only saying this once but a theme isn't some secret coded message an author weaves into a piece so that your English teacher can talk about Death or Family. A theme is a summary of an idea in the work. If the story is "Susan went grocery shopping and saw a weird bird" then it might have themes like 'birds don't belong in grocery stores' or 'nature is interesting and worth paying attention to' or 'small things can be worth hearing about.' Those could be the themes of the work. It doesn't matter if the author intended them or not, because reading is collaborative and the text gets its meaning from the reader (this is what "death of the author" means).
Every work has themes in it, and not just the ones your teachers made you read in high school. Stories that are bad or clearly not intended to have deep messages still have themes. It is inherent in being a story. All stories have themes, even if those themes are shallow, because stories are sentences connected together for the purpose of expressing ideas, and ideas are all that themes are.

I must not respond to the bad take. Responding to the bad take is the mind-killer. Responding to the bad take is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face the bad take. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the bad take has gone there will be nothing. Only I (and my good takes) will remain.

A pair of protesters shouted down Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Wednesday during a town hall.
Ocasio-Cortez participated in a Q&A session in the Bronx, New York, on Wednesday. During the town hall, she fielded questions about illegal immigration, the opioid crisis and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Ocasio-Cortez was interrupted by two political activists. One heckler identified himself as Jose Vega, while the other remains unnamed.
"Congresswoman, none of this matters unless there's a nuclear war which you voted to send arms and weapons to Ukraine," one of the protesters shouted. "Tulsi Gabbard, she's left the Democratic Party because they're war hawks." "You originally voted — you ran as an outsider. Yet you've been voting to start this war in Ukraine. You're voting to start a third world war with Russia and China," the man continued.
AOC: ABORTION IS AN ECONOMIC ISSUE BECAUSE GIVING BIRTH 'CONSCRIPTS' PARENTS TO WORK 'AGAINST THEIR WILL'
The duo later took to social media to explain themselves and their motivation for disrupting the congresswoman's town hall.
"My friend @Noggatone and I confronted Congresswoman [Ocasio-Cortez] on her support for Nuclear War and Ukrainian Nazis," Vega wrote on Twitter.
He added, "I call her out for being a coward in the face of the party that will push us all into Nuclear war right now. Will she stand up like [Tulsi Gabbard] and fight for peace?"

"AO3 doesn't need a "dislike" button"
Um, actually, it already has one. Depending on your specs, it might look a little different but over all it looks kinda like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can find it at the corner of your screen, which corner is dependent on your layout.
Anyway, if you dislike a fic, you can hit this Dislike Button until the fic goes away. It really is pretty amazing actually.

why is religious Christmas imagery all so joyful and pleasant? where is the inherent horror of the birth of Christ? A mother is handed her newborn child, wailing and innocent. Her hands come away sticky. Red. Simply by giving her son life she has already killed him. He is doomed from the beginning. Her love will not save him from suffering. Because the thing cradled in her arms is not a baby, it is a sacrifice: born amongst the other bleating animals whose blood will one day be spilled in the name of what demands it. the night is silent with anticipation. Mary, did you know? That your womb was also a grave?

Hey so remember how grocery prices suddenly jackknifed during lockdown and never went back down?
Well turns out the companies would have done that shit either way and had been steadily price-fixing for the last decade!
Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson just announced more than $40 million in court-ordained Fuck You money from massive swaths of food production companies are to be paid out to households earning at or below 175% of the federal poverty level ($25.5k for 1 person, $34.5k for 2 people households) before Dec 31st of this year. Happy Holidays.
youtube
"The bottom line here is that my legal team took on two large corporate price-fixing conspiracies that increased the cost for groceries for Washington families. We've prevailed, and as a result, we are sending checks to over 400,000 Washington households."
Cannot stress enough the extent of the conspiracies he's talking about here. 15 out of the total 19 chicken producers got nailed in this lawsuit. Not the total number of conspirators, mind, just the ones who left enough evidence for the AG to kick their ass in so expedient a manner. Make no mistake, all 19 were in on it. The court case against the rest of them has been delayed until October of next year, though. None of them are making it out unscathed.
Tuna didn't escape antitrust horseshit either, because the CEOs of Starkist, Chicken of the Sea, and Bumblebee Tuna had a fucking group chat where they complained that the price of tuna was "too low" and they agreed to artificially inflate the price.
“What’s so maddening about the conduct of these companies is the reason that they engaged in this price-fixing conspiracy was greed. They wanted to make money."
Tumblr media
So anyway the AG who nailed their asses to the wall and continues to do so is running for governor. If you live in Washington, could be worth your vote when primary season rolls around.
