I put on a lot of random movies while I do other things but I've become distracted over "smile" (ntk the Shane Dawson movie christ a new one) because oh my god. Did they even consult a psychiatrist on this film lmao. The protagonist is a psychiatrist working in a mental health facility or the mental health ward in a hospital and it is fucking. Astounding how bad she is at her fucking. Job. Her intro has her working with a patient who is staring blankly into the middle distance and rapidly repeating things like "I'm gonna die we're all gonna die I'm gonna die" and she.

1. Says he's having a manic episode? Uh sure I guess. Not what I would have gone with but. Alright. Looks like an ocd aligned anxiety/panic attack to me.

2. She tells him everything he's feeling isn't real so he needs to calm down??? Lmao?

3. They show us a pandering scene of her yelling at her boss that she sent an uninsured but non emergency patient to inpatient care because She Needs Help like wow thanks girlie

4. New emergency patient is brought in. They bring her in screaming and fighting and just. Put her in a locked waiting room. And it's such a fucked up room? Like this is specifically apparently an eval room. Eval room 2 she says. Because they have two of them at this ER. It has two tiny weird uncomfortable looking chairs and a little table in between with some flowers in a porcelain vase. And then it's just this huge unnerving white room. And I'm like. The fuck is this. That vase is obviously a risk to an actively suicidal patient. And nothing about this room is calming or comforting this is going to CAUSE panic attacks

5. This girl is having a massive breakdown she is in the midst of a panic attack where she is yelling about a monster following her and she was told she's going to die today and she's fucking terrified and this woman just hops back in the "it's not real calm down" shpeal that wow! Sends her careening into a much worse state of panic that. Apparently surprises this woman?

6. God that's awful CGI. Anyway she cut her face open and it was horrible cgi

7. This patient slits her throat- very slowly- and the doctor does. Nothing. She just panics and cries and falls to the floor and does fucking nothing lmfao what the fuck girl??? I've watched my mom sit on the side of the road with an actively suicidal patient and speak to her for an hour what is this

8. SHE CALLED A 5150 ON A PATIENT WHO APPROACHED HER MENACINGLY LMFAO?

9. She sees a patient dissasociating and looks baffled and confused

10. The patient who is always rambling about everyone is going to die I'm going to die we're all going to die starts yelling "you're going to die" at her and she panics and calls for him to be restrained and like six guys run in and drag him off of the bed onto the floor kicking and screaming in terror despite the fact he was, in reality, just lying there doing nothing. Girl

11. Then she makes EXCUSES? Like it wasn't a big deal? "He was acting aggressively!" AND??? GIRL YOU ARE A FUCKING ER PSYCHIATRIST????

12. She says "she was acting... Psychotic" and she whispers psychotic like it's a bad word GIRL. You are an ER PSYCHIATRIST

Can you do a quick spoiler free review? I can’t watch the movie till Friday lol

i'll compile a bunch of my spoiler-free parts of the review because i am currently in ap lit but i don't want to leave you hanging

i think fans are going to be both excited and disappointed by the movie because on one hand, favorite characters! some favorite scenes! on the other hand, it's just not an awesome movie lmfao

plot decisions made to retrofit the story for a script ended up weakening the overall quality of the movie, and i think the characterization of some characters in the script was inaccurate in a very distracting way that also ended up weakening the performance of whatever actor was playing the role

the general audience is going to feel VERY queerbaited (basically a return to fandom circa 2013-2015) and i've already seen some of that sentiment, specifically in a review from the guardian

i LOVED seeing the practical effects especially during some prominent action scenes, but i think the amount of cgi they ended up using anyway was disappointing considering it's what most reviews have been mentioning even though paul said he was trying his damndest to avoid it

despite all this i do think the main young cast (sophie, agatha, tedros, beatrix, hort) did the best with what they were given and i liked seeing them a LOT

i also still think the physical set design and costumes were GORGEOUS. some scenes are really very beautiful, and the cgi isn't always bad (the stymphs are mostly passable, and i think the wish fish scene turned out really beautiful)

overall, very mixed feelings

I think Disney making fun of the first version of sonic for the sonic movie is by far the most hypocritical thing they could’ve done for that stupid chipmunk movie. Like in that same movie you make fun of 2D getting taken over by 3D but can’t even be assed to make the 2D chipmunk ACTUALLY 2D animation. It’s just a 3D model meant to look 2D. Lmfao. Also like, Disney’s horrendously bad venture into CGI w the lion king… absolutely no room to make that joke

Obi-Wan Kenobi, episode 1

I had a blast watching and liveblogging this, believe it or not!

[Spoilers for the next episodes, and hopefully vague spoilers for KOTOR]

I appreciate the prequels recap. I last saw them when TFA came out... It's very funny to see “It’s over, Anakin! I have the high ground” and “You underestimate my power” included in full seriousness, though.

Wow, they're opening with the younglings? Brutal. Oh, must be saving the kicker to bookend the episode, then.

Oh so we’re focusing on the “nazi stand-in” angle here?

Oh right, I should have watched for the kid in the opening. I didn’t try to see her among the others. Also interesting how this “ten years later” timeskip frames her as the viewpoint character, though the viewer isn’t supposed to immediately realize it.

Oh god the word “Inquisitors” was said with the same cadence/accent they greet your player character in Dragon Age Inquisition, I almost jumped!

Did... did they put the Asian guy in a stereotypical Asian hat?! Bit distasteful.

Omg I thought she was uncomfortable for some reason I didn’t realize she just resented the guy for monologuing lmfao. Also nice bait-and-switch with the Jedi, I totally assumed it was Obi-Wan despite having a second-long thought like “Huh, this guy is dressed like a Jedi”. Why is he dressed like a Jedi, by the way? Is nobody in the order familiar with the concept of blending in?

Oh, the hat guy speaks with a Japanese accent, too.

“You will forget this fixation with Kenobi or I will relieve you of your duties”, Palpatine never said to Vader, presumably.

Idk why the Inquisitor is mad, she was way more efficient at finding the target...

Wait what the hell, he was telling this random Jedi to abandon everything and live a normal life and now he insists that “there’s more to life” and that Luke must be trained? Genuinely surprised to see the Hypocrisy not even thirty minutes in.

*completes the rant above, presses play again* “Like you trained his father?” Laughed out loud at that.

I didn’t really think about what her name was until I started watching the episode, but. Reva. Please tell me she was named after Revan on purpose!

Will the hat guy shut up, Reva is obviously grinding her Dark Side points! This is why she is a video game protagonist and not you.

Literally what do these two losers have against her when she’s literally picking all of the darksider dialogue options. It’s like she’s only one of them who’s even heard of leveling up. How tf are they planning to advance as Sith if they aren’t threatening and attacking innocent people with zero provocation in pursuit of their personal goal?

(Before you jump on this post with corrections: after writing this, I googled “are inquisitors sith” and saw very convoluted explanation that only reinforced my impression that Reva is a legit KOTOR-type Sith and the other two don’t even get it and are not nearly in the same wheelhouse. Hopefully she stabs them for standing in her way ASAP. Since people insist that Inquisitors aren’t Sith this would probably never happen but I want to see this woman recite the Sith code as she overthrows her own superior.)

Supergirl 6x18: Truth or Consequences.

Hey y’all, it’s your girl Korra! There is only one week of Supergirl left and I’m not coping well with it, haha. This show...sigh, this show. I will always have a soft spot for it. I’m really going to miss it, warts and all. Alright, so how did this episode fair? Let’s find out, and as always, SPOILERS AHEAD.

The episode opens up with William telling the Superfriends about his secret meeting with Otis. This is setting up a few things right away. 1) William’s story this episode which we all know isn’t going to end well. 2) Alex’s story about her feelings about Esme. Not a bad way to start the episode.

Andrea leaked Lex’s journal to the media and put William’s name on it 💀. Understandably, Lex and William are both very upset. I did laugh when Nyxly said “they don’t even know me” when the reporters called her a psychopath haha. Girl, they don’t need to know you. You’ve caused so much damage to the city already.

William storms into Andrea’s office and rightfully chews her out for it. I think it was a little mean of him to compare her to Lex. William didn’t like working for Andrea, that’s been obvious since the beginning of this season, so I never understood why he didn’t just leave. Anyway, this speech right here...yeah, it’s his last hooray, so to speak.

I did love that Andrea spoke Spanish though. Points for that.

The Superfriends go to get the Totems from Nyxly and Lex. The action looks good but the CGI was a little wonky. Looking at this, I realized something. Brainy and J’onn both have been in make up more the last few episodes. I guess they’re using the budget for that instead of the CGI, which is fine lol. Just something that came to mind.

Brainy is talking to Winn but they didn’t want to pay Jeremy for voice work so instead it’s a bunch of moving lines lmfao. But Brainy’s face when he receives the news? OUCH.

Yet another Lexly scene. There are a lot of them this episode.

Alex and Kelly are cleaning Esme up after she blew up paint at the school because Chelsea was being rude to her. Girl, blow that paint up. Alex handles the moment really well and then we see the Love Totem mark on her skin. Uh oh. This is not a good thing.

THIS SCENE. F*ck. Last week I said I was worried that Brainy might be leaving at the end of the season to go back to the future and this happens!! UGH. I DIDN’T WANT TO BE RIGHT. I really, really, really, hope that they find a way that he can stay because I can’t handle Brainia breaking up in the finale. That would be way too sad. Jesse Rath also absolutely demolishes this scene. Ngl people, I cried. It was a lot. His “I AM A PART OF SOMETHING GREATER!!” hurts so damn much.

Not that I have a lot of hope for it, but there is a parallel between Supercorp here. Brainy looks at his phone in despair after future Brainy tells him he has to go back, and it’s a picture of Nia. Kara (or Lena, my memory is a little fuzzy on this) also did that at some point during s5.

Another Lexly scene. They go get the Truth Totem, which is hidden in the archives of the SG prop department lol. I honestly feeling like they were careful with the budget this episode because of the finale. Or at least I hope so.

Another parallel between Kara and Nyxly: Nyxly says she doesn’t want to be alone, not to be afraid that those who are close to her will betray her. Kara doesn’t want to be alone anymore and wants to be able to be herself.

Danvers sisters are fighting. The thing is...Kara is only trying to help. This fight felt a little forced, in terms of I don’t think Alex would have been so defensive about this. I think this fight was supposed to be a build up for Kara’s identity reveal in the finale. Anyway, Kara and Alex both make some fair points, and again, I do feel like for the most part Kara is trying to help, but Alex gets angry and leaves, leaving Kara feeling guilty for her actions.

Nia is trying to locate Nyxly and the Totems, but ends up seeing Brainy’s time is coming to an end. You may have heard this a few times, but Jesse kills this scene. Nicole does too. This whole scene hurts. It was so well done.

So we’re 16 minutes into the episode and we’re having another Lexly scene. My biggest issue with this episode is exactly this. I don’t mind them. I even like that Lex isn’t taking over her as the villain. My problem is just that too much of the episode is focused on them, and building up their love story. You could have done this earlier in the season or something. It was just too much.

Andrea calls Lena, because the writers remembered they were friends lmao. Lena answers even though she’s supposedly busy. So they have a good conversation about why Andrea did what she did, and it was a good one to have. It just sucks that they could have been building up Andrea’s story this whole time but now it’s gonna be shoved into the last couple of episodes.

J’onn listens to Kara about why she is down about Esme and Alex. I’m glad that he does agree with her, but gently reminds her that they (Kelly and Alex) are her moms. I think this is good because it shows us that Kara did have good intentions and how hard it was being an alien.

I feel like Alex is a little short with Kara in this scene for no real reason. Like Kara is just saying not to cancel something because of this. Not a shining moment for Alex.

Kara and J’onn go the ship to get the Totems. Kara gets blasted by Lex and used TWO of her powers. I couldn’t believe it. She was a super badass this scene. Mitch attacks J’onn and he owns Mitch’s butt in like 10 seconds lol. Kara causes the ship to explode and they get the Totems! J’onn, who can fly through space, takes Kara back to Earth.

Esme wins the competition! William offers to babysit her so the others can party and I knew it was coming after this. My stomach dropped. It’s not a good feeling.

Alex and Kara make up and I’m glad. I still feel like the conflict was a little forced but overall it was well done. This conversation is really great and Melissa and Chyler kill it. I’m glad they had a heart to heart.

Lexly. Again. Nyxly realizes that she cares for Lex in this scene and they discover the Love Totem. I thought they were going to kiss and I’m so glad that they didn’t. Anyway, so they go to get the Totem.

So there’s a really fun Bachelorette party scene that doesn’t last very long. I did love the conversations they all had though, and the dancing was super fun. I just never want anyone to complain about the Flash Bachelorette episode to me every again lmfao. At least Iris and the girls got to be the focus.

Okay, before I really get into this, but why did J’onn not notice that they were at the Tower? So much for psychic overview. And William recorded this whole thing instead of calling for help??

Alright. So here is my biggest problem of the episode. We all knew William’s death was coming. Between the writing and BTS stuff, we knew. But I don’t care. I had no feelings when he died, and that’s on the writers. They introduced him as a douchebag at first, and claimed it was because he was undercover. Then had to turn around and make him into a nice guy. Then he was forced as Kara’s LI for a bit, which was horrible. That was all in s5. So s6 rolls around and I found him to be tolerable. He has a girlfriend now, and he’s just overall trying to be helpful while doing his job. But William had no real personality outside of that. With his skin tone we knew he was probably half Indian, but that was never mentioned until this episode. He was just the British baker who wanted to help. I’m not sad over his death. I’m frustrated. I’m frustrated that they killed him off, killed off yet another person of colour, when they could have just made him leave the show. His death was a plot device to motivate someone to finally get rid of Lex once and for all. William was a wasted character. All this time spent on him to make us feel bad really didn’t do much, so that was wasted time as well. Nothing about his death makes me happy or sad. I’m just angry at the writers.

The ending of the episode is good though. I do think they did a good job showing that the Superfriends cared about him. And obviously they’re worried about Esme as well. High stakes for the next episode.

Okay, so that’s it. I rewatched the episode and liked it a little better the second time. I still think that Lexly was just too much this episode, and William’s death was unnecessary. But overall, it sets some stuff up for the finale. It wasn’t a terrible episode, just not my favourite. Part of that is probably because I’ve been pissed about William’s dying for weeks now. Anyway, let’s see if the finale can pull this off. I really want SG to have a good ending. I think this season has been pretty fun for the most part. Way better than s5. If they stick the landing, I think SG will have a good rewatch value for me at least. But let’s see how it goes. Also, I’ll be doing episode 19 and 20 in separate posts because that’s gonna be a lot.

TCM 2022 THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS ETC UNDER THE CUT <3333 the post before this is my live watch if u wanna see it hehehe anyways <3

PROS:

-sally <33333333 god i didn’t realize how much i missed her

-BUBBA!!!! loved that they kept him being fat, loved the relationship w his mom and the reasoning they give for him killing again. i also rlly loved the play on the pretty lady mask heheheheh

-i rlly liked most of the call backs to the og one <3

-lila and richter were great characters if not a little flat but maybe i just love ellie as an actress

-most of the kills were BADASS

-i loved the entire party bus scene idc the ‘do anything and ur cancelled bro’ line is so fucking funny LMFAO

-the cinematography was super cool and i loved the colors and framing etc etc

CONS:

-oh boy. ok so unfortunately i dislikes most of the characters. they were all flat and 1 dimensional and i fucking HATED melody.

-the cgi gore and blood was so distracting we need to bring back practical effects yall ….. like god damn the party bus scene could have been so much better if there were any practical effects

-i feel like they didn’t rlly use the set up well? like they could have delved i to gentrification, school shooting, racism, etc more but they rlly didn’t? they just kind of went ‘hey. look.’ and then dropped it

-and when they did bring the school shooting back up it was ,,,,, just weirdly placed? idk how to explain it

-they rlly didn’t give us anything to care abt the characters. like we know nothing abt ANY of them except lila and bubba which is rlly only bc we have the og movie to go off of. so why should we care abt them when they’re dying if they’re not likeable or have any redeeming qualities lol

-the timeline is a little weird just bc virginia calls bubba one of her kids from the orphanage but when tcm1 took place bubba was an adult? idk maybe i’m just stupid and don’t understand it lol

-hated the whole ‘confederate flag’ plot line they had going on like . hated they painted dante as the bad guy for being uncomfortable w it. it was stupid.

-honestly it all boils down to the characters and how unlikeable they are. in the og one, we literally had insight into the characters (even just a little) which MADE them likeable! there was none here! the plot was a little predictable but i’m not faulting the movie for that it’s pretty common atp but like,,,, the characters. god. I STILL DONT EVEN KNKW THE BLONDE GIRLS NAME!!! LIKE WHATS DANTES GFS NAME? couldn’t tell you! i only learned lila’s name 45 mins into the movie!

OVERALL:

ok so overall i liked it (i know theres more cons but ignore it hehe)! it wasn’t a groundbreaking phenomenal movie by any means but it was fun and honestly that’s all i need from a movie lol

i’d prob give it a high 3 if i had to rate it tbh

hi!!! what are your favourite movies? like actually good ones but also any trashy comfort movies? is IT (2017) one of them?

Hello!! IT (2017) IS ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THEM oh man, thank you for this, I love talking about movies!!!! This is possibly the most difficult question you could have asked me. Apologies for how absolutely off the rails this got, I just... love movies so much lmao

I’ve said this before, but opening night of IT ch1 was the best cinema experience I’ve ever had, I’m so glad I got to see it with a fully packed audience who were all laughing and screaming together the whole way through. I’m a huge fan of... everything ch1 was doing, the 80s nostalgia, the summer-coming-of-age themes, the solid ghost train funhouse JOY of the Pennywise performance and scares, the washed-out cinematography, the tiny background details to make everything that much more eerie, the kids’ ACTING?!

Like, a lot of the time I find child actors can be really awkward and stilted to watch, but I remember leaving the cinema really impressed by JDG and Sophia Lillis in particular. I liked that they were all allowed to be little shitheads with potty mouths, it felt like a callback to 80s movies like The Lost Boys or Stand By Me. The whole thing worked to make me really care about what happened to the kids (even if I do still have issues with how they handled Mike. I understand even ch1 had limitations with juggling so many characters, but still). I saw it another 2 times in the cinema and have rewatched it at least, I dunno, 7-10 more times since then?

Add to all of that the retroactive CANON R+E baby pining subplot? I just love it, as if that wasn’t obvious by now given my Whole Blog. It’s a really special movie to me!

Anyway!! Ok, the main handful of movies I rewatch all the fucking time are:

Back to the Future, The Lost Boys, Pride and Prejudice (2005), Jaws, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Ocean’s 11, POTC 1, The Dark Knight, Inception, Die Hard, LOTR trilogy, Snatch, The Nice Guys, Logan Lucky, Mad Max Fury Road, Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, Billy Elliot, Dirty Dancing, Tomb Raider (2018)...

Those are the easily consumable ones that I’ve seen so many times I don’t really have to concentrate or think about them, but I really love them and unfortunately often KEEP rewatching them instead of new stuff. It would take too long to go into why I love all these movies so much because I could write the same amount as I already did for ITCH1, and everyone already knows why those movies are good, so, lol.

I think I’m gonna have to subdivide and categorise this whole post because there are too many separate criteria for... goOD MOVIES, AUUHH 😩

Okay so first off, HORROR MOVIES? I’m especially in love with Re-Animator (1985) and its sequel Bride of Re-Animator, they’re such good examples of camp and batshit 80s practical effects, and also EXTREMELY funny. I’m actually just gonna post my list of my fave horror movies that I do actually keep on my phone at all times lmao. These are in no particular order:

Wholeheartedly recommend every one of these. I’ve never been so scared in my life as I was watching Hereditary in the cinema, hoo boy. Mother! by Aronofsky is one of the strangest experiences I’ve ever had (and I actually saw it on the same day I saw IT ch1 for the first time!! That was a fun day)

Psycho (1960) and The Fly from 1986 should also be on there but I couldn’t fit them in the screenshot.

I’m a HUGE fan of a ton of martial arts movies too, like Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, Ip Man, The Raid movies, John Wick 3 is my fave of the trilogy, Drive from 1997 with Mark Dacascos is incredible, SPL 2, Ong-Bak, Operation Condor, Project A, Iron Monkey, and Zatoichi (2003) are some favourites.

My favourite Tarantino is Reservoir Dogs, fave Coen brothers are Raising Arizona, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and O Brother Where Art Thou. Love some old-timey colour correction and weird offbeat dialogue. I also love Goodfellas!!! And Donnie Brasco! And The Firm, I’m so easy for any good crime/law/gangster/heist procedural like that, especially if they’re from the 80s or 90s in a super dated way.

Fave Disney movie is Tarzan, favourite Ghibli movies are Spirited Away and Lupin III. I remember watching Spirited Away during a thunderstorm one time and it being.... god! Transcendent! Favourite Pixar movie is The Incredibles (the first one. ALSO the documentary “The Pixar Story” is great and well worth a watch, it’s very comforting for some reason) and my favourite Dreamworks movies are HTTYD1 and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron.

I tend to watch more anime movies than tv shows, so stuff like Akira, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Journey to Agartha, and my ultimate fave anime is Sword of the Stranger (2008). The climactic fight in that movie is fucking stunning and should be counted in “bests fights” lists right alongside anything live action

Also if we’re talking animated movies another hearty favourite is Rango, and a Belgian stop-motion (which at one time I considered my favourite movie ever) called Panique Au Village (2009) which is one of the funniest movies ever made imo.

As for TRASHY movies, I’m not sure if that’s the right word for how I feel about these ones but.. dumb/silly/slightly guilty pleasure movies? Ones that I feel need some kind of justification lmfao

Troy - something u must know about me is that I’m a giant slut for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, so if a movie smashes historical and mythological nonsense together with fun costumes and sword fights, I’m gonna enjoy myself. Even if they should have made Achilles and Patroclus gay. Other movies in this vein are King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Immortals (2011)

Gods of Egypt - I know all the reasons this movie is whitewashed bullshit. But it was already bullshit with giant Anubis mecha and giant snakes and bad acting and ridiculous CGI and frankly I had a blast at the cinema (my friend who I forced to come with me did not have a blast. Sorry H***)

Avatar - yes, the one with the big blue people. This movie gets a lot of flack nowadays but I really do enjoy it just for the spectacle. The full CGI world technology was so new at the time and I love to wallow in the visuals and daydream about riding a cool dragon around in the jungle

George of the Jungle - I’ll defend this movie to the death ok this movie shaped me as a person, it is fucking hilarious and Brendan Fraser is the himbo to end all himbos. It’s perfect. The song Dela is perfect. I still want to write a reddie AU about it. It’s one of the best movies ever made and I’m not being ironic

Set It Up - I KNOW this is a dumb Netflix original romcom but consider this; it was funny and the leads had great chemistry. I got butterflies. I once watched it and then literally immediately set it back to the start so I could watch it again

The Brady Bunch Movie - when people talk about great satires or parodies you will see them bring up the same movies over and over again, Blazing Saddles, This Is Spinal Tap etc, but they never talk about The Brady Bunch Movie from 1995 for some reason, which they should. It is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen and every time i watch it somehow it gets funnier

NOTABLE EXTREME FAVOURITES that I didn’t include in the regular rewatch list because they’re too heavy/not as well known/require more attention.:

Thin Red Line (1998), Badlands (1973) both dir. Terrence Malick

Malick’s brand of dreamy impressionistic filmmaking is something I find really appealing, both of these movies are gorgeous and unusual and poignant and, in the case of Thin Red Line at least, have a lot of things to say about a lot of rough subjects. I don’t totally understand all those things sometimes, but a theme with a lot of my favourite movies is that I’ll be more likely to love something long-term if it raises unanswered questions, or is surreal/esoteric etc. Plus the cinematography is incredible, and I wish there was a way to get Jim Caviezel’s narration from The Thin Red Line as an audiobook because it’s very poetic and soothing.

Let the Bullets Fly (2010) dir. Jiang Wen

This movie is WILD, it’s so much fun. It’s sprawling and intricate and epic and smart and really fucking funny, it! Has! Everything! A gang of very tolerant outlaws!! Jiang Wen’s beautiful broad chest!!! Chow Yun Fat absolutely DECIMATING the scenery, and the two of them outsmarting each other in order to gain control of a small Chinese town!!! Plus it’s long, but it packs so much nonsense and intrigue that it goes by really fast. Wow what a flick

A Field in England (2013) dir. Ben Wheatley

I know I included this in my horror list but aaaaahhh ahhhh Wheatley is one of my favourite directors (he also made Sightseers, and is directing the Tomb Raider sequel which makes me absolutely rabid.) This is a surreal black-and-white psychological horror black comedy set in the English Civil War about some deserters who may or may not meet the Devil in a field. People eat mushrooms. It’s bonkers. I love being blasted in the face with imagery that I don’t understand

Mandy (2018) dir. Panos Cosmatos

Speaking of being blasted in the face!!!!! This movie... I saw it in the cinema and I can’t even begin to explain the experience, but I’ll try. My favourite review site described it like this:

“...somewhere between a prog album cover come to life and a metal album cover come to life, and subscribes to both genre's artistic tendency towards maximalism: what it ends up being is basically naught else but two glorious hours of being pounded by bold colors...”

So, prog and metal are my two favourite genres of music. This movie opens with the quote “When I die, bury me deep, lay two speakers at my feet, put some headphones on my head and rock and roll me when I'm dead.” and then a King Crimson song, it is SURREAL to the nth degree, it’s violent and bizarre and Nic Cage forges a giant silver axe to destroy demonic bikers and there is a CHAINSAW DUEL. A galaxy swirls above a quarry. Multiple animated horror nightmare sequences. At one point a man says “you exude a cosmic darkness” and releases a live tiger. At another point Cage says, in a digitally deepened voice, “The psychotic drowns where the mystic swims. You’re drowning. I’m swimming.” and I haven’t stopped thinking about it for two years

Paper Moon (1973) dir. Peter Bogdanovich

Really fantastic movie set in the Great Depression (and also in black & white) about a conman and a little kid who may or may not be his daughter, running cons across the Midwest. It’s beautifully shot, so sharp and sweet and the progression of their dynamic is really well done because they’re played by an IRL father and daughter. Tatum O’Neal was NINE YEARS OLD and she’s so amazing in this movie she’s actually the youngest person to win a competitive category Oscar. I keep trying to get people to watch this fbdjfjdbf it’s wonderful

Alpha (2018) dir. Albert Hughes

THIS MOVIE IS A VICTIM OF BAD MARKETING ok, the trailers made it look like some twee crappy sentimental Boy And His Dog Adventure, plus it had voiceovers in American-accented english? That’s a total disservice to one of the coolest things about this film; the fact that they got a linguist to construct an entirely original Neolithic language that all the characters speak for the entire runtime. And yes, it is eventually a Boy And His Wolf adventure, but it’s COOL and fairly brutal, and it has some really incredible cinematography. The landscapes are so strange and barren and alien, you really get the sense that this is an ancient world we no longer have any connection to. And it’s also about like, the birth of dog & human companionship sooo it’s perfect.

Free Solo (2018) dir. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin

The Free Climbing Documentary. I loved climbing as a kid, I love outdoor sports, and I love movies that elicit a physical reaction in me, whether that’s horny, scared, real laughter, overwhelming shivers, or in the case of Free Solo - HORRIBLE SWEATING TENSION. Like, I knew about Alex Honnold beforehand because of this adventure film festival I go to every year and I followed him on IG so obviously I knew he lived, but the actual climb itself was torture. My hands sweat every time I see it!! It’s incredible, such a cool look into generally what the human body can do, and more specifically, why Honnold’s psychology and life means he’s so well suited to free soloing. It’s such an exercise in getting to know an individual and get invested in them, before they attempt something very potentially fatal.

Brokeback Mountain (2005) dir. Ang Lee

I can’t even talk about this. When I was around 13 I snuck downstairs to watch this on TV at 11pm in secret, and my life was forever changed. I wouldn’t be who I am if I hadn’t seen Brokeback at the age I did. I seriously can’t talk about this or I’ll write an even longer essay than this already is

God’s Own Country (2017) dir. Francis Lee

The antidote to Brokeback Mountain, I’m so glad I managed to see this one in the cinema too. It makes me cry every time, as someone who’s spent years working on a cold British farm with sheep it was very realistic, which is expected since Lee grew up on a farm in Yorkshire. I love that this movie isn’t really about being closeted, but about being so emotionally repressed and self-loathing that the main character finds it so hard to accept love. Or that he deserves to be loved. The cinnamontographies.... lordt... but also the intimacy and sex scenes are fucking searing wow who hasn’t seen this movie by now. 10 stars. 20 stars!!!

Tomboy (2011) dir. Céline Sciamma

I saw this years ago but I’ve never forgotten it, it cut so deep. It’s from the director of Portrait of a Lady on Fire and it’s about a gnc kid struggling with gender and misogyny and homophobia in a really raw, scrappy way, it reminded me very much of my own... childhood... ahh the central performance is amazing for such a young age. I haven’t seen Portrait yet but I feel like if you went nuts for that, you should definitely check this out, it’s lovely.

Donnie Darko (2001) dir. Richard Kelly

EVERY TIME I WATCH THIS MOVIE I UNDERSTAND LESS AND LESS and that’s what I love so much about it. I love surreal movies, I love time-fuckery and stuff about altered perception etc etc and Donnie Darko scratches all my itches. I wish I could find a way to figure out an IT AU for it, because I know it would work! Somehow! Plus it’s got the subdued 80s nostalgia and I found it at an age when I was really starting to explore movies and music and the soundtrack FUCKS.

Offside (2006) dir. Jafar Panahi

I wish more people knew about this!!! It’s an Iranian film about a disparate group of women and girls who are football fans and want to watch Iran’s qualifying match for the World Cup, but women aren’t allowed into the stadium, so they all get thrown into the Stadium Jail together? They don’t know each other beforehand, but it’s about their changing relationships with each other and the guards and just, their defiance alongside hearing the match from the outside and WOW it’s so lively. Great dialogue and very funny, and such a different kind of story from anything you usually see from Hollywood.

The Fall (2006) dir. Tarsem Singh

This movie... I guess it’s the ideal. This is the platonic ideal of a film for me, it has fantasy, magical realism, glorious visuals, amazing score and costumes and production design and a really interesting, heartbreaking relationship at the core of it. I don’t know why so many of my favourite films feature incredibly raw performances by child actors but this is another one, Catinca Untaru barely knew any English and improvised so much because of that, and it’s fascinating to watch! Also the dynamic with Lee Pace is one of my favourites, where a kid forms a friendship with a guardian figure who isn’t their parent, but the guardian grows to really care for them by the end. It’s like Paper Moon in that sense. What is there to even say about this movie, it’s pure magic joy tempered and countered by genuine gutwrenching emotional conflict in the real world, it’s also ABOUT old moviemaking, in a way, and it’s stunning to look at!

Mad Max Fury Road (2015) dir. George Miller

I know I included this in my “most rewatched” section but it deserves its own thing. We all know why this movie is fucking incredible. I remember clutching my armrests in the cinema and feeling like my skeleton was being blasted back into the seat behind me and tbh that is the high I’m constantly chasing when I go to see any movie. What a fucking gift this film is

Théo et Hugo dans le Même Bateau (2016) dir. Olivier Ducastel, Jacques Martineau

I only found this movie last year and it became an instant favourite. Initially I was just curious because I’d never seen a movie with unsimulated sex before, but it’s so much more than the 18 minute gay sex club orgy it opens with. No, not more than, AS WELL AS. The orgy is important because this movie is so candid and frank about sex and HIV treatment in the modern day, it was eye-opening. Another thing that really got me is that I’d never seen a real-time film before. It’s literally an hour and a half in the lives of these two men, their intense connection and conversation and conflict in the middle of the night in Paris, with some really nice night photography and just!!! Wow!!! AMAZING CHEMISTRY between the actors. This is such a gem if you’re comfortable with explicit sexual content.

Ok. This is already over 3k but film is obviously one of my ridiculous passions and I can and do talk about it for hours. I’ve been reading magazines about it for years, listening to podcasts and reading review blogs and recently, watching video essays on YouTube because the whole process is so interesting to me and I want to learn more!!

Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about the concept of valuing form over narrative. The idea that story can often come second to the deeper physical experience and emotional reaction that’s created by using ALL the elements of filmmaking and not just The Story, y’know? Whether that’s editing, shot composition, colour, the sound mix, the actors, how it should all be used to heighten the emotional state the script wants you to feel. And so, I think for a few years now this approach has been influencing the types of films I really, really love.

I think I love surreality and mind-bending magical realism in films specifically because the filmmakers have to use all those different tools to convey things that can be way too metaphysical for just... a script? I’m always chasing that physical response; if a movie can make me stop thinking “I wonder what it was like to set up that shot” and instead overwhelm that suspension of disbelief, if I can be terrified or woozy or crying for whatever reason, that’s what I’m looking for. That’s why I watch so many fuckin movies, and why I’ll always remember nights like seeing IT (2017) for giving me another favourite.

In al honesty, I fond it hilariously sad when psychology teachers or school counsellors SUCK at their job. I literally can’t 😃✋ like, ma’am? You spent thousands of dollars on a degree? And you still don’t try? To? Help? Us?

I literally told so many things to my HS counsellor and holy crap, that was funny as fuck. I told her I was Bi and she was legit like “haha no♥️”

I have no idea if venom is marvel tbh. I don’t think it is?? It doesn’t have the marvel intro so if it’s not.

I also totally understand the not being a fan of sci-fi. It really depends on the actual plot ig. I’ve seen a lot of sci-fi films that depend SOLELY on the fact they are sci-fi and have cool cgi and that sucks.

Cats are amazing, I love them!!! Yesterday I went on a walk with my mate and we saw four cats and I almost died. It was a mom a three kittens and they were so small, I couldn’t reach them tho bc they were inside a house-garage :/

Rocketman Watch #4 Thoughts

i have so many MORE thoughts can you believe it wow here we go

(i wrote these as i watched it so they’re in order im p sure)

man, his intro monologue during group therapy is just as gripping as it was when I first watched it. And the transition to the bitch is back is so fuckin good. My palms are sweating.

There’s some commentary about forgiving and loving your inner/past child, but I don’t have the words for it at this moment. In the beginning he’s staring down, confused and scowling at his child self, but at the end, he embraces him in a way his father and loved ones never did.

Was he in therapy/rehab WHILE touring and doing music? Stomping into the room in his regalia would have me believe so. I know group therapy was a medium for storytelling. Was it just signaling the very beginning of his story, because we go through different stages through his actions and clothing changes?

Lmao I imagine it must take some pretty cool parents to allow their, like, six or seven year old child to be in this movie. He said bitch so many times.

Took me a hot second to realize the orchestra he’s conducting is playing Rocket Man. The violins are so pretty. Imagine being picked to be in the orchestra on set and getting smile up at the tiny little kid who played Elton. My heart would absolutely swell seeing a little kid being so fantastic at this really intense job.

Kit Connor did amazing in his role. He’s fifteen and he’s already done so much! Imagine growing up knowing you played Elton John as a kid. Getting to work alongside him and his husband and the dozens of incredible actors. Wowie. I’d never shut up about it.

I LOVE how 12 year old Elton is playing the piano SO HARD and is trying to rock out as hard as he can while playing classical music. The boy wanna ROCK dammit.

HE GLANCED UP THE TINIEST BIT WHEN THE MAN ASKED IF ANYONE HAD A FAG (slang for cigarette)

WOOOW SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD ELTON IS CUTE AS HEEELLLL. The hair, glasses, and front tooth gap fit Taron so well. Goddamn I hope I look like 17 year old Elton some day.

The choreography for this number is absolutely breathtaking. You have to get that many people all in sync! We followed Elton running through the crowd and AAHHH it was a lot! The athleticism! And they did it in the rain! Wow I’m blow away.

Elton is JAMMIN in the back of the stage. It’s really sweet to see his smile and enthusiasm and his brain thinking and working.

Charlie Rowe plays Ray Williams, and he also plays LEO ROTH from Red Band Society!!! The first time I watched the movie, I KNEW him from somewhere, but I couldn’t place it and it was driving me nuts. Man. RBS was a big crutch during the worst lows of my ED. Had no idea he was English.

Love to see how shy Elton was as a teenager. It’s a hot ass mood. Also, those silk scarves? Ascots? idk but they’re a LOOK.

A week ago before this movie I was sick and fuckin TIRED of crocodile rock but now I can’t get enough of it. The movie transformed a lot of old songs I was sick of for me.

Imagine being a kind of shy, nervous kid, terrified to go on stage, but two and a half minutes later the entire venue is LOSING IT because they love the jam YOU WROTE. how cool for Elton.

Elton searching John’s gaze while he’s talking and looking like he’s not really paying attention, just looking for a kiss on the couch.. GOD I remember the honeymoon phase of my relationships. So much fun.

His dad going “N-Not really my thing.” That was a metaphor for his SEXUALITY TOO, huh.

Damn. He went to his dad’s to come out to him and he never even got to get to that part. He was just like “....nice shoes....” and even after all this time, didn’t show any interest in his music. If he never was into what he did, how could he even talk about being gay? I’m sure during that scene there were a lot of metaphors to sexuality but I didn’t bother to think much about them.

The eyebrow quirk after his dad says “ah—no. Could you make it out to Arthur?” DAMN Elton was like .. “really. This is what’s happening? Okay. Awesome.”

John saying “don’t you ever put your hands on me” when he was the one who yanked him from the phone booth AND directly after punching him... woof man. What a shitty dude.

Damn, just noticed John talking very quietly and closely to another man right before he goes on and plays Pinball Wizard. Was this the first sign of him having fun with other men when Elton was indisposed?

Pinball Wizard is absolutely intense and loud and fun, but it DOES carry the tone of “god im SO miserable” under it all. You knew Elton wasn’t having fun.

“It is next week.” Jeezus.

LMAO I just caught the “mom, you’re ON my GOWN” when he reluctantly complies to give the Anderson’s a tour.

How did they do the overdose scene, you think? Surely the pills Taron took had to be like. Empty. Or placebo affect drugs? Idk. He did take a big drink directly after stuffing his mouth with them. I don’t think he spit them out.

God, there is SOMETHING symbolic about how he meets his child self at the bottom of the pool. Rock bottom? Apologizing? Wishing he could be better? Telling him he’ll never be better?

OH I watched a behind the scenes cut about the pool scene, and none of it was CGI. Taron was weighted under his robe and a SCUBA diver was on standby to provide oxygen. The singing and bubbles coming out of his mouth and stuff underwater was all real.

Dying to know about the choreography around the second chorus, about the undressing and twirling and dressing and injection and handing off of the bat and stuff. That sequence was incredible.

Bennie and the Jets. Damn. It fucks. I listened to it almost the entire time on my run today. (Five miles; I felt like garbage the entire time but it was good anyway.) The scene is wild. He’s in the middle of a drug induced haze orgy. He SHOULD be having the time of his life but he’s so goddamn miserable. (Also, the juxtaposition between Chris Fleming’s Bennie and the Jets is so funny.)

Part of the problem was that John never understood Elton. But, Elton broke it off with John, not the other way around like he said it was. He wasn’t the victim in that regard. John did treat him like shit though.

Renate and he aren’t even close when they do the duet to don’t let the sun go down on me. They’re separated in different rooms, mirroring literally how closed off their relationship was.

Watching Taron down that orange juice made me a little nauseous I gotta say

It’s CRAZY to watch Elton and his mom interact at the dinner scene. He gets accosted and accused of so much by his mom, claiming SHE’S the victim of his actions, making it all about HER and then he turns around and does and says the exact same shit to Bernie.

He yells “Oh, don’t be so dramatic!” at Bernie as he gets into a taxi. THE PROJECTION!! THE DEFLECTION!!!!

I know there’s only so much they can put in two hours, but I wish they showed more of Elton’s eating issues. He had bulimia for sixteen years before he got help. It’s Absolutely the Man With Anorexia in me, but seeing that even men deal with eating disorders quells the lonely aching something in me. I feel that much less alone, you know. Eating disorders aren’t a “woman’s disease.”

How do you think they did his hair? A wig adds more hair, not take it away. He didn’t get his hair cut for it did he?

Seeing Elton’s first love fall apart because John was such a selfish, heartless prick in reality makes me sad.

Elton hugs his inner child when he reconciled with everyone in his past. Goddamn. He found peace and forgiveness for himself, who he was, even after all that time.

When Elton asks him not to go, Bernie refuses, saying this is something he had to do on his own. Healing comes from within alone. No one can help you do it. People can guide you, but you have to work at it. It’s fucking lonely sometimes, but it’s so, so worth it.

I used to loathe I’m Still Standing since i heard it so much at work, but the movie changed my entire perspective on it. I love the slow build up as he exits the rehab center. You don’t get thrown into something so happy and fast paced and fun after a cathartic climax you need to drink in. And the pan to his hat with the rainbow stripe to his smile. I get chills every time. Elton feels so right and secure and happy in himself. At first I thought it was a bit cheesy, but accepting your sexuality, especially after all the hell he went through during his life, grappling with unresolved trauma and fear of abandonment, he absolutely should wear it loud and proud. It’s easy to think times are much easier now being gay, and it shouldn’t be such a big deal. Relative to 1975, it is easier. But it doesn’t mean it’s not such a rough personal thing to work through if you’ve been spit on and resented all your life. Being gay, coming out, and accepting and being comfortable with that fact must’ve been such a HUGE milestone in Elton’s recovery and self-esteem.

Love me again after I’m still standing is perfect. The credits make me tear up every time. Jeez. What a good movie. What a good movie. Hit me up if you wanna talk about Rocketman because I absolutely will with you.
