Imagine ending under the mistletoe with Shadow 🥰
Tumblr media
everyone's been fighting to get you and shadow underneath it all night, but he hasn't been budging at all. this little festive party wasn't his style to begin with so why would he leave his one secluded spot?
it wasn't until rouge fibbed that you spilled some hot chocolate on yourself that gave him enough incentive to leave his position in the back. just the mention of your name and the possibility of any sort of harm coming to you was more than sufficient; to make shadow rush through a throng of people, curt apologies descending from his lips.
you were pressed against the doorframe, completely and utterly unsuspecting of the mistletoe hanging above your head. as shadow approached, the dangling evergreen plant tied perfectly with a bow captured his attention... but it didn't stop him from joining you.
"[name]... are you alright?" shadow asks, examining you all over. there were no stains or spots on your clothes, nor no bandages or blemishes on your skin.
"i'm doing fine! sonic told me to wait here because you had something you wanted to talk to me about?" your expression was a mixture of perplexity and disquietude, making shadow's stomach churn.
so rouge and sonic schemed together to pit the two of you underneath the mistletoe. and you both fell for it so easily.
"i think sonic only had one goal in mind by telling you that..." shadow couldn't stave off the warmth inundating his face, rosy hues powdering over his cheeks, as he made a small gesture with his eyes to beckon you to look up.
you were always the sentimental type, adoring romantic things like this. however, when your gaze met the mistletoe, you gulped. "oh! we don't have to, if you don't want to! you probably don't care much for these silly traditions, right?"
the way you stammered cutely over your words as embarrassment coalesced in the pit of your stomach enticed shadow beyond words. your skin radiated heat, the glossy shine of your lips amplified for the hedgehog before you.
and truthfully, he didn't; but if it was an excuse to kiss you, he'd start paying more attention. "i usually don't, but..." he started, trailing off.
looking away abashedly, you squeaked when you subsequently felt shadow's touch linger on your waist before cupping it, bringing you flush against him.
you placed your hands on his chest, gripping the fluff to stifle the way your fingers felt numb from anticipation. you peered into shadow's eyes, becoming breathless as they reflected a different type of excitement than candy-canes and tinsel emanated—he looked like a child who opened their first gift on christmas morning and it was exactly what they asked for.
"... can i kiss you under this mistletoe?" shadow whispers, so faintly you were afraid you didn't hear him right and this was all a dream given to you by the sugarplum fairies.
nodding, the two of you craned your heads and slowly brought your faces closer together; the propinquity enchanting you both. the vestiges of cocoa and sugar cookies merged as your lips pressed against one another's, and you couldn't smother the small moan of pleasure and happiness in time.
shadow grasped your tauter, keeping you still against him and savoring every morsel of warmth you exchanged between your bodies.
it was already a christmas miracle to you that shadow was even at the party to begin with. but it wasn't the charm of holiday spirits that urged him to go—it was the simple, lovely fact that you were going to be there too♡

First Snows
Squirrels Arc
{NON-CANON AU}
word count: ~1.8K
summary: The sickness Eryn Galen now faces disrupts the enchantment that has given eternal spring to the great forest.
trigger warnings: animal death
Tumblr media
Lakes and lands under the eye of the Lonely Mountain typically suffered greater cold than ever witnessed in the bordering Greenwood.
Fabled for enchanted forestry remaining evergreen despite its nature, snow had never grazed the kingdom of green leaves. The most brazen of snowflakes melted at the boundaries of its canopies.
Mysterious in its absence, few Greenwood elves thought they might experience the touch of frost in their long, sheltered lifetimes, lest they venture outside the safety of their borders.
So, when Winter descended upon Mirkwood for the first time -- unprotected due to dark forces sickening its roots -- its inhabitants swelled with fear.
Predator and prey alike sought shelter, a mass exodus in search of protection from the cold. Fawns shivered beneath bushes and squirrels chittered nervously in their hideaways.
Shriveled brown leaves quivered on shrunken husks of branches, trees watchful and wary. The forest lay deathly still, air fraught with tension.
Snow up to her ankles by now, Alphes stooped. It had been falling steadily all night. Only her Elvish litheness kept her above long-buried tree roots. Her breath bit her throat as she inhaled, misted like icy dragon smoke as she exhaled.
Suddenly, a family of mice leapt through the snow banks, appearing and disappearing like swimmers in the lake in summer. The trail they left in their wake quickly vanished: forgotten ripples in water.
Scampering up Alphes' offered arm, they squeaked frantically and shook like the leaves. Cradling them close, Alphes guided them to her pocket where they might snuggle up warm. The weight by her side was reassuring.
Her footsteps made little sound on freshly fallen snow. The heavy beat of a bird's wings in the canopy above sounded akin to a clap of thunder.
Whispering empty reassurance to the trees, Alphes began to make her way home through a transformed territory. Fingertips trailing on bark, connections were hard to establish through opaque layers of frost clinging stubbornly to the trees. Their fearful voices were muffled, as if heard from the other side of a locked door.
Her fingers slipped on a sheet of ice encasing a strong cedar, and the connection was lost. Alphes' light cloak did nothing but billow and snap obtusely in the glassy wind.
Every drop of contrast to the unsettlingly quiet forest outside, Felegoth bustled with furious life.
Entryway blocked to bursting by traffic of every animal known to the forest -- frightful deer and flitting birds and sleepy hedgehogs underfoot -- there remained only small pockets of space for one to breathe. All pushed and shoved amongst themselves to carve out their own territory in the warmth. It was loud; so loud; elves yelling above the deafening din of animal cries for a dominating melody.
Directing all manner of creatures, Thranduil stood in the thick of it, an island in the ocean. He had shed a fine set of robes, though he had yet to notice the boar chewing on his embroidered tunic, too concerned with the recent invasion of the cellars.
The mice in Alphes' pocket shifted, restless. It was best they stay safe until she could find a place for them, she decided, stepping out of the way of a silver-furred wolf, tail between its legs and teeth bared.
Thranduil looked at her across the shifting ocean. Voice lost to waves of activity, his summons was a sweeping gesture of his crowned head, clusters of holly berries bright like blood against ashen hair.
Thranduil's throne itself remained the only reliable patch of Felegoth kept free of animals; a proud boulder resilient against the stubborn force of a raging river.
Alphes shooed a badger from the steps so that her father could climb them to his seat. A small group of deer slept in the nook beneath them, but she left them be; they'd found peaceful haven away from the bustle of the halls, and weren't in anyone's way.
Clearing her throat, Alphes bowed deeply, dropping to one knee.
"Aran nin."
"Stand, iellig," Thranduil said, acklowledging her with a slight dip of his head.
The King's clothes had changed since earlier that day, now a muted cream tunic, that of undyed wool, and only embroidered at the hems in emerald thread. Truly the dregs of his wardrobe.
"Tell me, Alphes, how fares the forest?"
Catching the downturn of his broad brows, Alphes polished the guard of her sheathed sword with a gloved thumb.
"Barren, in a word."
Chasing a runaway fox, a bowless elf sprinted by, breathing fast.
"...As you can see, most fauna is within our halls. The trees are stiff with fear. Leaves are dropping almost as fast as snow falls."
The Elvenking said nothing, looking past her into middle distance. Alphes frowned, pursed her lips.
"Adar, we must do something."
Refocusing, Thranduil brought up his hand to halt her incoming tangent.
"This is no meek army, Alphes. To take up arms against nature is surely to lose."
"Winter's end is far and we are nearly defeated! You must realise the forest will not survive the season if we continue this way."
Thranduil's eyes flashed dangerously. "This ancient wood has withstood for millennia. We can manage one measly Winter," he hissed. Then, brushing off his outburst and relaxing back onto the throne: "Our stores of lembas bread remain safe, do they not?"
"It is not just a matter of food; we don't have enough firewood, nor warm clothing for our people. And there is no space!"
Alphes began to pace back and forth in front of the throne.
"Animals will begin to fight amongst themselves and against us. For territory, for food. There will be bloodshed, Adar. Our halls will rot with the weight of it."
Shoulders heavy, she drew to a stop. Suddenly Thranduil's many, many years showed on his face. Hanging his head, he massaged his brow.
"Thank you for appraising me."
The Elvenking waved his hand somewhere in her direction. Storming from the throne room, Alphes took his dismissal with a sour face.
The bridge's smooth stone was slick with frost. The river below ran quietly suffocated underneath a sheet of clear ice. Claws scraped for grip beside dying ivy.
The coyote growled like thunder, lips high and tail low, grey fur bristling along her spine.
Hearing her threat, the mice leapt from Alphes' pocket in a fright, landing unharmed on the bridge's wall and sprinting fast. The coyote followed.
Bones crunched sickly within the coyote's jaw, snapping as easily as twigs.
Alphes gasped an obtuse sound of disgust and turned her back. Redness flowed, spreading quickly and soaking fast into the grains of ancient stone. Ice crackled under hot rivulets.
Death was the future Winter would lead them to.
>---|- bonus >---|-
Despite having been absent for days now, Tauriel had not yet returned to Felegoth. She was kept away, conducting an extensive upheaval of Mirkwood's borders. There were many hundreds of miles to traverse between these safe halls and the wilds of the forest, and bad weather made no trip easier.
Although the title of Captain was one Tauriel bore with pride, the attached responsibilities demanded much of her time. Alphes could only hope she was staying warm whilst out in the storm, and would return soon.
A week, a month, should not be notable to an elf: those who watch time flow as they would watch a river etch its way through stone. All the same, Alphes missed her. She couldn't help but feel an age had passed by already.
Expecting she had the room to herself, Alphes startled when a hand alighted on her lower back. Her heart beat like a rabbit's for a brief moment, then calmed when auburn hair and soft hazel eyes entered her vision.
"My apologies, tarien," Tauriel murmured.
"It's not your fault. I was lost in my thoughts."
Pivoting on her touch to be against her chest, the hand at her back drifted to settle on her hip.
Alphes reached up to brush snowflakes from coppery braids before they could melt. Interwoven gold beads glinted warmly in firelight, icy to the touch. Tauriel's cheeks and nose were rosy, her skin raw and lips chapped from the sharp wind outside. She shivered subtly.
"How do our borders fare?" Alphes asked, sugar-sweet, guiding Tauriel closer to the hearth.
In the princess' absence the chairs had been moved closer, woolen blankets piled. Alphes steered Tauriel to one, effectively boxing her in and encouraging her to relinquish, to permit rest. The elleth sighed, weary, and sat.
"We are secure -- for now. But we are vulnerable. I've assigned extra guards to the borders, though I fear for their usefulness, and for their opinion of me."
Quietly willing the warmth of the fire to envelop her bones, Tauriel bent forward towards the hearth, curled in on herself. Another shiver wracked her body.
Unfolding a blanket, Alphes settled it across Tauriel's shoulders, kissing her cheek as she did so. Her skin was frightfully icy.
"Their opinion?" Alphes pursued.
She perched cross-legged on a plush stool to Tauriel's side, beginning to unravel her braids. Making fists in wool-knots, Tauriel tugged the blanket tighter around herself and turned to allow Alphes better access.
"I don't wish them to think me punishing. No one wants to be ordered out--" she gestured to the balcony's doors, past which flurries twirled in great clouds of white, "--in that."
Alphes swept aside a loc of Tauriel's loose flaming hair in order to press her lips to the soft skin below her ear. Thankfully, her skin was beginning to thaw at last.
"They understand their duty. They know what you command of them is vital. Your Guard would follow you into an orc pit to protect our home."
Tauriel leaned into her touch. Her eyelids were growing heavy; she had not slept since departing the Woodland Halls, and the crackling of the fire sung a lovely lullaby.
"An orc pit would be the lesser evil," she murmured.
Listening to her Captain's breaths begin to deepen and steady, Alphes smiled, kissing the crown of her head. She steered her to lean back; Tauriel settled into her princess' hold gladly. Shifting to a more comfortable position, she tucked her legs up onto the chair and laid her head on Alphes' shoulder, nuzzling into the crook of her neck beneath the blanket.
Upon the sweetest of content sighs, she was asleep.
Watching the fire burn, Alphes cradled the elleth, savouring the weight of her body in her arms and the warmth of her breath on her skin. Alphes kissed Tauriel's forehead again, reverent. Then, she cast a wish to the sky that might ensure sweeter dreams for her Captain than the bitter wrath of Winter howling outside.

so i kept saying that i was going to post my oc and now i am after finding all of the art i still have saved on my phone (i have more of them i just haven’t got pictures of it all since they’re on the board that’ll be ordering back). before i give an introduction under the cut i’d just like to give the context that this was for part of my higher art project focusing on design (it wasn’t solely about them it was about a whole game) and the design was for a brand new sonic riders game that also happened to be a crossover with sonic prime which at the time had just released its first season. i’ll give more context in another post featuring other art i had to do for it but this post is about my oc!
everybody meet everett! they use they/them pronouns and they’re a snow leopard!
they live in the caves at the mountain tops of the stellar mountain range protecting their world’s prism shard known as “The Atlas Star” (protecting it similarly to how knuckles protects the master emerald of how thorn rose protects the great green). most days are spent on guard protecting the prism from the only others that they know, those others being the babylon rogues who would love more than anything to get their hands on the shard. they aren’t always alone however as they have a chao companion who often keeps them company while they’re guarding the shard and helping chase away the rogues whenever they get too close. when the day’s hard work is done however everett will sit and stare out at the stars reading them and hoping and wishing on them for good fortune to come.
it just so happens that one of these nights while hoping for good fortune that something peculiar happens to the snow leopard as they watch a blue blur crash into the evergreen forests below the mountain. i wonder what that could be…
i chose the name everett because i saw from multiple sources that it meant “brave” and felt that fit them well having to fight for their shard constantly and put the shard before themself a lot. i’ve also always associated snow leopard with being very brave animals living in the snowy and mountainous conditions that they live in naturally. the name also kind of sounded like mount everest which was also fitting.
when it came to making their design i knew i wasn’t going to go for typical snow leopard colours because this is a sonic oc we’re talking about and hedgehogs aren’t exactly blue in real life. i was either going to go with dark blue or purple spots and i, obviously ended up going for the purple to match the purple present on the atlas star. the blue colour however wasn’t completely lost as that then became their eye colour! their markings were surprisingly hard to figure out and keep consistent throughout their design but i ended up figuring something i felt was good eventually. the star marking on their forehead is really something i should’ve included from the start since everett is really closely connected with the stars (wether that be the atlas star, the stars on their gear or the stars they watch every night) but it didn’t click until later when i needed to fill a blank void on their head. the hair tuft was also another later edition, so late in fact that it wasn’t present in any of the pencil drawings of them. i added the hair tuft purely because they looks strange without having anything on their head and it turned out very cute!
their extreme gear was very simple to come up with as i just wanted to have fun and mess around with the colour scheme for their board since i was stuck without a very varied pallet for sonic and jet. their goggles are the original blue that i mixed for the sonic art i made for the front cover of the box art along with a lighter and darker shade. their gloves have textured grips on their fingers and palms to aid in climbing slopes and rocks easier and it isn’t seen here but their snow boots have paw print markings on the bottoms of them. i gave them scuffed knee pads because i liked the idea that they weren’t a very experienced flier on their extreme gear which has lead to a lot of falls on their knees during their practice attempts. even if they aren’t a good flier though they’re a very good snowboarder.
i loved designing everett and they’re probably the best thing that came out of that art class. i’d like to sincerely thank everett for getting me that B in higher art thank you. even though i don’t take art anymore i’m still going to draw everett because why the heck not, right?

"twentysomething indie devs didn't even experience games before gamecube" honestly I don't believe that at all. Maybe if u had a ton of money to buy a ton of new games. I was born 2001 and grew up playing handed down N64 and NES games. I got a GBA when I was young and that involved buying bootleg carts of Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3, and DKC2. I played (and failed at) Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 and Golden Axe on someone else's Genesis in elementary school. Kirby Superstar Ultra was my favorite DS game. When I started to get older I learned how to use emulators and played a ton of old stuff. It's weird to me to act like people's love for an era (or set of eras) of games is disingenuous just because they weren't around on release day. Maybe prevalence of pixel graphics in indie scenes isn't because of "manufactured nostalgia" or being hipster, maybe it's bc pixel art is evergreen and looks good and fucking rules.

Shadow x Sonic (Sonadow)! Fluff
Tumblr media
Evergreen hills were illuminated the soft glow of the sun, rolling clouds stretched across the sky, bending into different shapes and sizes. Shadow, enjoying his alone time, laying on his back on one of the many many hills. Inhaling deeply, he closed his eyes and enjoyed the utter silence.
Wind picked up south, ruffling the grass by his feet and leaves scatter across the spiralled running tracks.
"SHADOW!"
Shadow jumped up from his spot, screaming. As he scrambled up, stamping his foot.
"my EARS" He shouted at his fellow blue coloured hedgehog, curling his hands into fists.
Sonic giggled devilishly, raising a brow. "whaat? Can't handle the blue thunder?" he taunted, blinking his eyes dramatically.
Shadow's angered expression contorted to a blank stare and an emotionless expression, before rolling his eyes and laying back down. Patting the grass around him and crossing his hands behind his head.
"Don't ever call yourself that, ever." Shadow groaned.
Sonic flopped on-top of him, Shadow letting out a gasp of shock and annoyance. Sonic was kicking his legs, resting his head on Shadow's chest. Shadow groaned, glaring down at him, and after a small minute letting out a huff of defeat letting Sonic curl up on him like cat.
Sonic grin softened to a smile, yawning as he continued to kick his feet in the air, slowly resting his eyes shut.
Hours passed and the couple stumbled and rolled around while resting, the morning sun slowly hiding beneath the clouds, turning the sky into a baby soft orange and yellow.
Throughout the day, fellow friends had climbed the hill, (mainly Rogue and Tails) rolling their eyes and shaking their heads in amusement at the snoring hedgehogs.
By the time the sun left the horizon and and the moon peered from the clouds, each team respectively dragged their hedgehog friend back home.

Ooh I had a thought - what if, ironically (given his climbing abilities), Eclipse was scared of heights? He won't admit it and will show off in front of Shadow and Silver but eventually he goes too high up, looks down, and locks in place like a cat. Like, 'NOPE I AIN'T COMIN' DOWN'.
All three boys were in the backyard, staring up at the massive evergreen tree that shaded the house. The same one that Wade claimed he climbed and played in when he was a child.
Eclipse scowled. "You have not."
"Have so," Silver said. "I climbed all the way to to the top and I didn't even use my psychokinesis to do it. Right Shadow?"
The darker hedgehog just shot him a confused look. "I don't remember that."
"I did!"
Eclipse rolled his eyes. "Yeah right."
That got him a dark scowl and then the grey hedgehog tilted his head upward to look at the tree again. "Okay, race you to the top, no powers."
Everything the darkling had been about to say died on his tongue. He wasn't too fond of high places, especially if there was a chance he might fall.
But then again, Silver had been acting rather rudely toward him the last few days. And he was an excellent climber. If this is what got the annoying hedgehog to shut up, then it was worth it. He just had to be quick and careful. "You're on," Eclipse said.
Shadow stood at the bottom of the tree, arms folded. "First one to the top wins, no powers of any kind and no trying to mess up the other person. I'll be watching the whole time, so no cheating."
Stretching out his limbs, Eclipse bared a toothy smile toward the grey hedgehog that he hoped was intimidating. "Try not to cry when I beat you."
That Shadow grin and Silver scowl.
"Ready, set... GO!"
Both of them charged toward the tree, each grabbing a low branch and pulling themselves up on it. As soon as he could, Eclipse started using his tail, both to hold on and pull himself up so he wouldn't exhaust his upper body strength.
As soon as Silver saw, he scowled. "Hey that's cheating!"
"It is not!" Eclipse yelling, leaping onto the next branch. "Not my fault you can't use your tail." He kept going, higher and higher. The branches started to get thinner and weaker, but that was okay, he was almost to the top. And he was winning.
"Hold on!" Silver suddenly yelled from below.
That was when Eclipse made his big mistake. That yell made him pause and he looked down. Saw how high up he was, how Shadow was just a tiny speck on the ground, how thin the branch he was balanced on really was.
Suddenly, Eclipse couldn't move and hugged the tree trunk as tightly as he could. His head swam and he felt both dizzy and terrified at the same time.
Below him, Silver had gotten his quills tangled up in a nearby branch. As soon as he got them free, he started to climb again, quickly gaining ground on the darkling. Reaching the same point, he was about to taunt the darkling about how he was going to beat him when he noticed something. "Are you okay?"
Eclipse let his claws dig into the tree bark in hopes of a better grip. "Never better..." he said, trying to figure out how to get down. Every time he moved the slightest bit, his mind reminded him of how long a fall it would be. How much it would hurt. He could use Chaos Snap to get out, but that would require movement first. And that was almost impossible.
"Are you scared of heights?"
"No!" Eclipse yelled and then closed his eyes when the tree branch quivered under his feet. "Maybe...?"
There was a scoff and then suddenly he felt himself moving. Eclipse opened his eyes and found he was floating, surrounded by a blue glow. He tried to struggle, but could only move his eyes and his mouth a little bit. "What are-"
"C'mon, we're going down." Silver said, lowering both of them back to the grass safely.
The second he was released, it took everything Eclipse had not to hug the ground, not to be completely relieved that he was safe again. And that he would never do that again.
"What happened?" Shadow asked in confusion. "Neither of you made it to the top?"
Silver just grinned. "Yeah, but I won."
"But you didn't..."
"I still won," the grey hedgehog said smugly and skipped off to water his plants. In his relief at not being stuck up in that tree, Eclipse couldn't even find it in him to argue.

🏔️: Our muses take a winter hike together.
Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch went the snow beneath two pairs of feet; one set metal, one set not. Carrying two figures steadily uphill, passing flanking evergreens on their way... well, best the cyborg could tell, they were just vaguely going up.
Her struggling to keep pace with her spiny blue friend as she remained a constant distance ahead of her.

"Ya really makin' me wanna go back on our 'no flyin' agreement, darlin'..." Bunnie says with a playful huff, her natural hand stuffed into her old jacket's pockets as she does her best to stay behind her.
When she'd answered her door earlier that day, she'd been expecting at best a friend coming to pay her a visit and wish her a happy holiday before leaving her back on her own... at worst, carolers.
The last thing she expected, though, was for the blue hedgehog herself to be there with supplies packed, practically ready to drag her out with her out of town and into the snowy wilderness... not that she'd need to, of course. Bunnie was much too soft for her to pass up a little adventure, just the two of them...
Putting some distance between her and decorations, to boot.
"We headin' anywhere in particular, sugar-hog? Or did ya just wanna see how long it'd take mah ears t' freeze out 'ere?"

Love like the horse chestnut loves carbon,
like the sun isn’t millions of miles away
or doomed. Love like a blue fir amongst white pines,
like a wide shovel opening the earth. Rewind
your favorite moments over early dinners:
the correct identification of an olive tree, climbing
65 feet up a fat trunk, turning backpack pockets
into houses for leaves. Love as eagerly as sprouting seeds,
as hungry as a goat up an argan tree. Love like you are
spotting a red squirrel for the first time. Relish in your blooming
knowledge of Latin, wood chopping, propagation. Love as easy as
hibiscus roots drink rain. Breathe in the smell
of earth-drenched boots. Savor the quick-flowing photos of pheasants and hedgehogs and newts.
Live like a pioneer species. Love like sempervirents: evergreen.
Love like every green thing ever planted
will live long and never burn

Creating a Wildlife-Friendly Garden
and turtles.
Keep your water feature clean: Regularly remove debris and change the water to prevent diseases.
Consider adding a mister or water dripper: These can provide a cool spot for animals to escape the heat and attract butterflies and other insects.
3. Create Shelter:
Plant trees and shrubs: Trees and shrubs provide nesting sites, hiding places, and protection from the elements for a variety of animals. Choose a mix of evergreens and deciduous plants to provide year-round shelter.
Build a brush pile: Brush piles are great hiding places for small animals like hedgehogs, snakes, and lizards. Create a pile of logs, branches, and leaves in a sheltered area of your garden.
Install nesting boxes: Birds need secure places to raise their young. Install nesting boxes designed for specific bird species found in your area.
Leave dead trees and branches standing: Dead wood provides habitat for insects, which are a vital food source for many birds and animals.
4. Minimize Disturbance:
Avoid using pesticides and herbicides: These chemicals can harm wildlife and disrupt the delicate balance of your ecosystem. Opt for natural pest control methods like handpicking or using beneficial insects.
Let your lawn grow longer: A longer lawn provides habitat for insects and small animals. Consider mowing only a portion of your lawn and allowing the rest to grow tall.
Minimize noise and light pollution: Wildlife is sensitive to noise and light pollution. Avoid using bright lights or loud machinery in your garden, especially at night.

5. Learn and adapt:
Research the wildlife in your area: This will help you choose the best plants, water features, and shelter options for attracting specific species.
Observe and learn: Pay attention to the wildlife that visits your garden and adjust your approach as needed. You may find that certain plants or features attract more wildlife than others.
Share your knowledge: Encourage your neighbors and friends to create wildlife-friendly gardens. By working together, you can create a larger and more interconnected habitat for wildlife in your community.
Creating a wildlife-friendly garden takes time and effort, but the rewards are worth it. By following these tips, you can create a beautiful and inviting space that benefits both you and the wildlife around you. Remember, every step you take, no matter how small, contributes to a healthier planet and a richer experience for all.tunesharemore_vertadd_photo_alternate

Aperçu of the Week:
"It's really beautiful. It feels like God visits everywhere else but lives in Africa."
(Willard Carroll Smith II, better known as rapper and actor Will Smith)
Bad News of the Week:
Free speech and Russia - unfortunately a contradiction. Politically effective opposition and Russia - likewise. Independent judiciary and Russia - ...and again. If someone is then known as a "Kremlin critic", he has lost three times over. Also in court. As happened again in recent days. First, Vladimir Kara-Mursa has lost his appeal. Who, after working for "Open Russia", was already twice the victim of a poison attack and in the spring of 2022 held an anti-war speech in Arizona. Enough to sentence him to 25 years in prison for treason.
And also Evergreen Alexei Navalny - who, unfortunately, after the poison attack on him at the end of his recovery in Berlin returned to Russia. A real conviction offender! - was once again on trial the day before yesterday. This time on the charge of "founding an extremist organization." So one can call political opposition naturally also. He got (additional) 19 years of imprisonment. Sidenote: the new trial was not taking place in a regular court, but directly in Nawalny's penal colony in Melekhovo, without public or media access. No, I refrain (albeit laboriously) from mentioning Guantanamo Bay in this context....
Good News of the Week:
I am not a megalomaniac. Nor am I a psychic. Still, I was surprised on Monday to read about an action that may have been inspired by my little thematic foray into "hidden costs" (and that they should be visible to consumers) last week. It's about a promotion by German grocer Penny, the discount subsidiary of retail giant Rewe.
Penny is labeling products with the prices it would have to charge if environmental impact costs were actually included, as part of a promotion - unfortunately limited to one week and only for nine products. This leads to smaller and larger price increases. And these are hardly surprising. For example, that the vegan schnitzel only increases by 5%. But the Maasdam cheese by 88%. And the Viennese sausages double themselves with 94% nearly in the price.
Naturally that is a PR Stunt. Critics, such as the far too conservative Farmers' Association, were quick to use the nasty term "greenwashing". I don't care. I am happy about the basic thematization. Which, in the store of a discount grocer, should also reach people who don't consume media that take up the topic. Any form of attention is fine with me. After all, how could I rant about the consumerism of someone who can credibly assure "Really? Oh... I didn't know that."
Personal happy moment of the week:
We live in the countryside. The mooing of cows, the bleating of sheep and the clucking of chickens are part of our everyday soundtrack. Sometimes nature comes very close to us. For example, a hedgehog is currently building a nest under a bush by our terrace. And it took us two days to find a little field mouse and release it back into the wild unharmed. And we all had more fun with it than stress.
I couldn't care less...
...about Rishi Sunak. He started out as the supposed savior of the post-Brexit UK. And proves to be a gravedigger for the planet. The latest example of ignorance is over 100 new drilling licenses for oil and gas production in the North Sea. On one damned day. God save the earth. The Brits won't.
As I write this...
...we are at home (still) discussing a movie we saw Friday night. In the biggest movie theater in Bavaria. In the original English. And it wasn't "Barbie". We can't get rid of the Pandora's box that Robert J. Oppenheimer, the "father of the atomic bomb", opened almost eighty years ago. A look behind the scenes of the Manhattan Project, dramaturgically designed by Christopher Nolan's team to be highly worth seeing, should be a must for all of us.
Post Scriptum
Europe's history on the African continent is anything but a good one. At least until this century. Yet we struggle to come to terms with the colonial past in a mature way. And with an unbiased view of the 1.4 billion people who live (or survive) there. See the current dithering in dealing with the coup in Niger. Just when our peacekeepers are withdrawing from the neighboring country Mali.
That the basic problem is called "understanding" is proven by a look at history: In November 1884, Imperial Chancellor Otto von Bismarck had a five-meter-high map of Africa hung up in Berlin. For three months, representatives of the European powers and the United States looked at this map. And negotiated how Africa should be divided up. As can still be seen today - on the map and on the basis of past and present conflicts - simply with a ruler. And without regard for peoples, landscapes or ethnic groups. Who is still paying the bill for this today? Hint: it is not the Western powers.
"Africa is not a country" is the title of a new book by Dipo Faloyin. The African-American was born in Chicago, grew up in Lagos and now lives in London. Primarily an editor for Vice, his subject has always been Africa in all its complexity. And enlightenment about precisely that. Now he is making his internationally acclaimed book debut. The German subtitle is "The manifesto against stupidity, laziness and simplicity in dealing with the multiformity of the African continent." Sounds like a must-read.
