2023 Fic+Vid recs

A variety of things I liked this year, made this year. Once again, this got long, so fic recs and fandom-specific recs for dmbj are below the cut. But first a few miscellaneous vids

[vid] Cockroach Motherfuckers by eruthros, thingswithwings multifandom Immortal queer characters multi-vid! This is exactly as much fun and hopeful as it sounds. I've seen maybe 2 of the sources so you know, you don't have to have seen them all.

(We) Didn't Just Come Here to Dance [Fanvid] by FairestCat fandom: Newsies I haven't actually seen newsies, but I really liked this vid. Taking the (very dramatic) musical theater dancing and putting it to a Carly Rae Jepsen song works SUPER well, visually very fun time. Also, unions!

[Vid] Oceanographer's Choice by absternr fandom: Heroes (cdrama 2022) Bai Choufei, Su Mengzhen, and Lei Chun's fucked up relationship(s)/falling apart bad times. This vid is deeply upsetting, just a real exploration of sometimes caring a lot about each other makes everything worse. For maximum sad times, this goes well with absternr's other heroes vid, hey, I just met you, which is the meet-cutes that led to this whole mess.

[AMV] The Draw by Lovely Goblin fandom: Revolutionary Girl Utena Black Rose Arc! I've watched this vid so many times really good weird and creepy black rose arc vibes really good parallels between all the different duelists

Also blanket rec that if you've seen Everything Everywhere All at Once, consider looking for vids for it. There's a bunch on ao3 (which can be easier to navigate than youtube, though there are definitely more total vids on youtube) and they're pretty much all spectacular? I was going to include one or two in this rec post and couldn't decide

The wild phonemes of 40 Eridani Keid by astronicht Fandom: Star Trek (aos/tos mashup canon) relationship: Spirk ~10k words rated E You know if you'd told me a year ago I'd be reccing a spirk fic in 2023 I would have been a bit surprised. This is not particularly my fandom wheelhouse. But you know, they're always good, and this fic is really great. This is almost an episode-fic except that nothing really happens plot-wise. But instead of a plot we get a lot of musing about geology and diplomacy and clever references to current events as history in that very trek kind of way and Spock being bitchy just for fun.

fuori dal mondo by bladedweaponsandswishycoats fandom: Qi Ye relationship: Beiyuan/Wu Xi, Beiyuan/Zhou Zishu (more plot than ship focused) ~60k words rated E This is a retelling of Qi Ye except Beiyuan is... some kind of eldritch horror, part-time. It pretty much goes beat for beat through canon (which I appreciate, I loved that book and do not like any of the current tls enough to reread) but with the added layer of whatever is going on with this eldritch thing, which is very cool and tied into canon so don't let me spoil it for you.

We're Leaving Our Shadows Behind Us by lady_ragnell fandom: Tortall - Protector of the Small relationship: Kel/Neal/Yuki ~70k words rated T Canon retelling of Squire and Lady Knight but from Neal's POV. This fic really digs into Neal as a character and the details of the worldbuilding of Tortall, especially the chamber of the ordeal. Also somewhere along the way it sold me on this ship, which I wasn't exactly rooting for when I read the books the first time.

The Untamed/MDZS

a harmony between qin and se by Alaceron relationship: Wangxian ~60k words rated E This is a gender-bent (to make it a het romance) no magic historical drama au where Wei Wuxian is a woman who's arranged to marry Lan Wangji. Honestly this is pretty far from the untamed, especially in terms of themes, though some plot elements will be familiar, but mostly it's just a really great compellingly written historical drama, that happens to have main characters with some familiar characteristics.

Like a Game of Chess by countingcr0ws relationship: Wangxian ~40k words rated T Modern au: influencer Wei Wuxian runs into Lan Wangji on a trip to Taiwan and they travel around together. I love all the little details of their trip - it's like getting to see a new place without going anywhere. Also sometimes I forget that wangxian are very cute? They're a good ship brant

The Epic Highs and Lows of High School Zine Production by el_em_en_oh_pee relationship: Jin Ling & Jiang Cheng, Jin Ling & the mdzs juniors ~7k words rated G Modern au: High schooler Jin Ling has big feelings about a lot of things, including zines, gender, and family. One of those juniors-centric fics that makes me say oh they are Teens huh.

A Little Hole in the Wall by MountainRose gen, Liu Sang centric ~8k words rated G Honestly I would rec this fic even to people who know nothing about tomb shows. One thing that really draws me to a book is descriptions of food (I have read multiple food memoirs this year), and this restaurant au has AMAZING food (and food prep) in it. Not too plotty, mostly just descriptions of delicious things and characterization via cooking.

green with an attitude by ilgaksu relationship: heihua ~8k words rated T If you are in the English language dmbj fandom and you care at all about heihua you probably have already checked out ilgaksu's fic, which has basically defined heihua for the English language fandom. My favorite heihua moments are when other people show up and give you that foil to realize how weird they are, and this fic has that both via Xiuxiu and Wu Xie. Also, a fic about dancing!

making anything last, keeping anything safe by A (mumblemutter) relationship: Wu Xie/Xiao Bai (background pingxie) ~8k words rated M Post canon Xiao Bai takes Wu Xie to explore a tomb that should be perfectly safe... (They set off a sex pollen trap.) I don't particularly ship this, but this fic was extremely well done and kind of sold me on the ship. Fun tomb, really fun characterization for everyone involved.

A World Made Over, Fresh and New by Thimblerig gen, iron triangle, Wu Xie & Li Cu ~1k words rated G If you've ever gotten specific dmbj fic recs from me, it's probably included something by Thimblerig, they're amazing at pulling in very specific canon snippets in under 5k words and I'd generally recommend going through their work by tags if you're looking for fic with underloved side characters or fic set during a part of canon that isn't UN or post-canon, which are generally easier to find. That said, this particular fic is in fact the fandom staple of post-reboot let's go look at a tomb and pulling in a big ensemble cast including some reboot folks. But it's a staple because it's a good vibe, and this is a really well done sliver of friendship and relationship building and perhaps even a tomb trap?

[Vid] Still Into You by absternr iron triangle ot3 This vid is a bop! Multi-tomb show iron triangle being in love, through the years! I've got this bookmark tagged as "joyful"

[vid] When He Died by teyla Wu Sanxing-centric This vid really leans into the weird tomb nonsense and conspiracies and builds to something quite odd, meant in the best possible way. A concentrated version of what tomb shows want to be at their best, from a horror/strange spooky things perspective. Mind the tags.

[Vid] Before I Do by absternr Xiuxiu character study A vid all about Xiuxiu being a badass - she's so clever and cunning and she will figure out and surpass her family history.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

Friends, I have confession to make.

I've always wanted to turn one of my silly little stories into a published book.

I've never really been sure if any of the fic I've written is "book-worthy," because I loooove to focus on ~feelings~ (and porn) and that means that, as far as actual plot goes, they're all a bit threadbare, but after some discussion with the talented, the amazing, the wonderful, the enabling encouraging @frannyzooey, I'm taking a leap of faith.

Lavish and Control are going to be turned into books.

Lavish

So, this is by far the most popular thing I've written, and I think it's one of the few that actually has any sort of stakes (their jobs!!). But the main story is less than 20k words and is paced like a short story, so it will require a lot of building up and changing things around to become book-length and remotely coherent. That's probably going to take quite some time! So, to keep myself sane, I'm also working on another thing at the same time, and that thing is.........

Control

I like to joke that this fic is just BDSM and ~vibes~ and while it is my longest work on here, it's also completely deranged as-is. It's 70k words of smut. Not as much will need to be ADDED, but it is going to need to be re-worked somewhat to be more of a cohesive story. The good news is, this is going to remain the ~BDSM vibes~ book and I'm fairly sure no smut is going to be cut out or watered down. That means, if it gets done first, that my first-ever published book is going to include both triple penetration and pegging. No one tell my mom.

What happens now:

As of 8/15/22: Both stories have been removed from Tumblr and AO3. The first draft of Control is currently under review and I am VERY excited to start working on it again.

What’s something new that you tried in a fic this year? How did it turn out and would you do it again? So, in The Hayloft, there is a great deal of french. Because the chapters were significantly long, I didn't like the idea of ONLY having the translations at the end of the chapter. I went through and did hover text for all the french. It was an adventure, and from time to time, I made mistakes with the HTML coding. But I would do it again, because it is a great way to keep from needing to scroll to the end of a chapter.

How many fics did you work on this year? (They don’t have to be finished or published!) 26... crap. (I did post 12 - 7 stand alones and 5 shorts)

What’s something you learned about yourself as a writer? I *can* actually stick to a posting schedule. I did 38 straight weeks of posting on a schedule.

What piece of media inspired you the most? Given the ship I write... you'd assume BBC Sherlock. But probably the information about eco-farming and the actual farm that inspired Hayloft is likely the one.

What fandom(s) did you write for this year? Only BBC Sherlock - only Mystrade (this year)

What ship(s) captured your heart? Ok, so... I read a much wider than I write. At the moment, I'm only writing Mystrade. But I read Aziraphael/Crowley, Merthur, Bilbo/Thorin, Steve/Bucky... (oh no, do I have a type?)

What character(s) captured your heart? Farmer Greg. Look... just read it, you'll understand.

Did you write for a new fandom or ship this year? Nope... I am cemented in my little space.

What fic meant the most to you to write? Hayloft.

What fic made you feel the happiest to work on? All the little shorts I added to Safety First. It was great to just... dip into something not soft or good and get those feels out.

What fic was the most satisfying to finish writing? Hayloft. It took me almost 2 years to write and post.

What fic was the most difficult to write? Did you finish it? FUCKING Hayloft. And I did. >70k, 38 chapters, 3 languages, HTML coding, 2 betas...

What fic was the easiest to write? Probably L is for Line of Sight (in the Safety First shorts). It literally spilled out of me in about an hour.

What were your shortest and longest fics this year? Shortest is I is for Industry Standards (in the Safety First shorts) only 781 words. Longest is Hayloft, >70k words.

Rec a fic you wrote or posted in 2023 Mistakes were made - written for the Mystrade is Family and based on a silly tiktok. It's short, sweet, and fun.

What were you go-to writing songs? So, I have a writing playlist that is lyricless songs. Like... We Move Lightly by Dustin O'Halloran.

What were your go-to writing snacks? I try not to snack while I write. I do drink coffee... probably TOO much.

What was the hardest fic to title? Probably the Safety First shorts... I bounced between a few options for each letter before settling on them.

Share your favorite opening line It was a longstanding debate in their family, one that was never fully settled. Either she or he had been a mistake… Maybe they both were. A pair of ‘happy accidents.’

Share your favorite ending line They’d both have to help with the meal preparation tomorrow. The honest truth of the world, the time and season for everything under the sun. Rain or shine, there was work to do. And he would do it. Qui vivra verra... But Greg wasn’t doing it alone… Not anymore.

Share your favorite piece of dialogue “Christ, where did you find that guy?” Mycroft gave a tight smile. “Given the number of associates you elected to bring to this meeting, I hardly think that is any of your concern.” The administrator gave Lestrade a cautious glance. Lestrade grinned menacingly, “Woof.”

Share an excerpt from your favorite scene “They were slamming doors. And I… Just…” “Mmn.” Where Charlie had entered his teen years with the fiery temper of someone whose emotions had grown faster than their ability to control them, Henry was far more introspective and contained. It would have to have been loud to drive him outside. “Do we know what the fight is about?” Henry sighed and Mycroft couldn’t help the small twitch of a smile. Where Henry’s face was a map of his dad’s emotive features, his quieter mannerisms were manifestations of Mycroft’s own. It was both edifying and amusing, however serious the expression was. “Is that ‘no’?”

Share the final version of a sentence or paragraph you struggled with. What about it was challenging? Are you happy with how it turned out? “I know you enjoy a bit of mess, Darling, but I think we can both agree that – whatever that was just now – you are discovering novel and dramatic frontiers of mayhem.” Lestrade snorted, not sounding at all contrite. “You’re the brains of the operation here, Gorgeous.” That was absolutely absurd. “You cannot possibly hold me accountable for the incendiary device in th-” Mew Mycroft blinked, tightening his grip on the steering wheel. “Did you just meow at me?” “Wasn’t me.” Mycroft risked glaring at Lestrade. “What on Earth is that?!” Lestrade grinned as Mycroft tore his eyes away and back to the road. “It’s a kitten.” “I know it’s a kitten!” Mycroft snapped. Mew “Then why did you ask?” I struggled with this because it's a 3-way dialogue but not. And I wanted it to be sharp, snappy, and a bit sarcastic, but also... a kitten. I am happy with how it turned out, but I went over the section a large number of times.

What's something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story? Sometimes, my characters just won't do what I NEED them to do. And every once in a while, that means the story changes.

What did you use to write? (e.g. writing programs, paper & pen, etc.) I write on my laptop in g-docs.

If you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year? Finishing Hayloft.

Did you do anything special to celebrate finishing a fic? I got myself a nice bottle of wine... french wine.

How did you recharge between fics? I switch media. Catch up on my reading, podcasts, shows.

If this were an awards show, who would you thank? So many people. The Asylum for being a constant source of inspiration. @paialovespie for the rabid bunnies. The MRC for the chaos. @stlgeekgirl for the enthusiastic betas. Everyone who reads and comments... the true heroes.

What’s something that you want to write in 2024? I want/need to finish Marshmallow Experiment. And I want to finish Lesser Things.

Do I feel terrible about continuously bothering you with L asks? Absolutely. Am I asking anonymously so you don't have someone to target your annoyance at? For sure. But are you the only person who I've found who writes him so perfectly in character and takes the time to think about what he would actually do? Indeed you are.

Therefore, I ask of you (in relation to that last ask you got), how do you think L would feel if his s/o was involved in the Kira case and discovered who he was and what his job was? Would he break it off despite them being okay and willing to be quiet about it? Would he do everything in his power to remove them from the situation? How devastated would he be that these were the circumstances?

On another note - how are you? how did you get into deathnote? do you write for anything else? I don't mean to ask personal questions in case they aren't allowed and make you uncomfortable, but I do find the range of things you write for really funny. The teenage mutant ninja turtles to deathnote works is interesting lol. Lots of love babe <3

Dude you never have to apologize about this. Sorry for taking so long.

Frankly, it would never get that far. As soon as your name shows up on the list of investigators you either agree to drop the case or the two of you are over. He can’t drop it— thousands are dying— but that didn’t mean he’s going to let you throw yourself in harm’s way like an idiot. If you decided that the relationship wasn’t worth it and decided to go through with it anyways, not much outside of that would change; if you stuck around long enough to be a part of the KTF then he’s already fairly sure you’re not Kira so logically it shouldn’t matter. He’s not going to forcefully take you out of harm’s way or anything— he has no right to do that— but he will absolutely make quiet jabs about it as if he wasn’t being completely hypocrite by doing so.

During the investigation? You aren’t going to be able to tell either way; he’s gotten very good at just ignoring his emotions for the sake of the investigation. If he thinks about it? Absolutely devastated, but that’s not important right now. If you died? He would never be able to forgive himself and might even retire, but that’s fine. It’s a breakup over a career and it’s totally alright because that’s your decision and your life. Never mind you were the closest thing to a loving relationship he’s had in a decade and a half; at the end of the day that’s not your issue. He will be slightly more aggressive in his tactics but other than that it’s fine. Definitely. Totally. Never better.

I’m fine, thank you. I actually got into death note forever ago but I only started writing fanfiction after I finally decided to watch it all the way through (I stopped watching the first time after L died like everyone else). I’ve been really into DOL recently and I’ve writing for Genshin and Mystic Messenger but I’ll write for whatever I’m interested in or people ask for, really. I got into TMNT because when I was real little I remember seeing it on TV and then it was on Hulu and I thought it might be fun to revisit and holy hell that was a lot of plot and then I wrote 70k words of stuff for it minimum and then I stopped because Hulu got rid of TMNT so now it’s a bit of a struggle to want to do things for it though, if there’s anyone who has stuck around long enough for the TMNT stuff that one thing I wrote might actually get an update this year. So, yeah. If people ask me to write stuff outside of what I’ve already written for I usually at least check whatever it is out to see if it has bones and other than that it’s whatever I feel like. If anyone has any recommendations for fandoms to write for I’d be down to try them. If you have any other questions, let me know!

Multi-chapter fics:

*Lost and Found (Begin Again Sequel) - 70k+ (in-progress) (Begin Again sequel) Emma had felt lost nearly her whole life, and Killian had lost everything he’d ever found. That is, until they found each other. With the Crocodile dead and Cora turned good, it seems happy endings have returned. However, new crises arise, threatening the budding family between them and Henry. But this is a family that always finds each other… and they have yet to fail. CS, Anti-Neal

Hell to Pay - 44k (tag to the Underworld arc) We followed Emma's perspective when she found and rescued Killian, but we didn't get to see much of Killian's. This story will follow Killian's perspective from the moment he sacrifices himself to when he is rescued. Slight divergence from canon: when Emma does find Killian, Hades doesn't let her rescue him so easily. CS H/C (lots of whump, but just as much comfort!)

Begin Again - 40k (s2 "Manhattan" divergence) No one breaks a deal with Rumplestiltskin, and Emma finds herself facing the wrath of the Dark One. What if Neal didn't come back for Emma in NYC, but instead, Hook showed up to kill Rumplestiltskin early? No one has ever saved Emma before, and Hook has never been able to save anyone at all. It's time for them both to tell a different story. Together.

Don’t Let Go (Because I Can’t Hold it Back Anymore) - 24k (canon divergence for s4 episode "White Out") Rather than Emma and Elsa trapped in the ice cave, Emma is trapped with Killian. They have to keep warm and stay awake as they fight the frigid cold, or their first quiet moment together may very well be their last. h/c

Dreamshade - 13k (s3A, "Good Form" canon divergence) Instead of David getting hit with the poisoned arrow, it's Hook. Now it's up to David to get Hook to Dead Man's Peak before Dreamshade takes Hook's life, and maybe learn, perhaps too late, that Hook is far more than just a pirate. h/c Captain Charming

How You Remind Me - 14k (S3b, NYC Serenade canon divergence) When Hook tries to convince Emma to drink the memory potion, she takes it and shatters it. Hook has a much, much harder time trying to get Emma’s memories back.

A Gentleman Never Tells - 9k Right after saving Henry in Neverland, Pan puts Emma under a Sleeping Curse that only romantic love can break. Hook's kiss wakes her, but in the confusion of the moment, it appears to everyone else, including Emma, that it was Neal's kiss that woke her. As the group celebrates and Hook empties his flask alone, he can't help thinking it is better this way. **(Will be adding another chapter for a Henry reaction at some point)

Echoes - 5k (tag to Echo Caves scene) "What we have with her is unique. But it's not what I wanted. I want another go at it; I want to have another baby." All Emma's life, she's been haunted by the paralyzing fear of never being wanted. Now, her worst fears have come to light. Emma is breaking, and it's up to Hook to put her pieces back together.

*On the Other Hand - 3k+ (in-progress) (tag to s4 episode "The Apprentice") After two hundred years without a hand, Killian gets it back... and then loses it again in the same day. I felt like we missed out on a lot of the emotional component of this, so this is my attempt to encompass that, as well as make him feel better about it.

*Killian Jones vs. the Modern World - 2k+ A collection of different moments throughout seasons 2-6 of Killian experiencing modern world things. A collection that has obviously been done before, but I just love these so much haha. Most of these will be Captain Swan and I'm sure Captain Charming and Cobra as well!

OUAT Oneshots:

It's Called Trust - 7k (season 2 "Tallahassee" canon divergence) Emma forgets that handcuffs cannot hold a pirate.

Firsthand - 6k After getting her hand broken in Neverland, Emma is struck with the realization of just how debilitating Hook's life has been since losing his hand. In more ways than just physically.

Moment of Truth - 4k After Killian learns he killed David's father, the secret is eating him alive. So, with a load of courage and even more rum, he brings himself to tell the truth. And he prays he won't lose the love of his life… or his best friend in the process. (S6 canon divergence where Emma doesn't find the ring and doesn't pressure Killian into proposing) for Angsty August 2022, CS, CC, h/c

Lullaby - 3k (True Love story, s3B canon divergence-ish) Emma is cursed with a Wakeful Curse, and needs True Love's Kiss to save her life. When Killian tries, and the kiss doesn't work, all hope seems lost. Or is it?

A Snowball’s Chance - 3k After Emma rescues Killian from Hades in the Underworld, David and Snow tend to some of Killian's physical wounds, and end up healing emotional ones. (aka, Snow and David acting as parental figures for Killian) hurt/comfort oneshot

What’s in A Name - 3k (tag to the CS movie) After rescuing Emma from the castle, David, Snow, Marian and Emma and Killian retire for the night. Except, to the other three, Emma and Killian were still Prince Charles and Princess Leia. So, they decide to fall asleep together to protect their fake story, and maybe find that not all of it was for the cover. CS cuddling

Come Back to Me - 3k (tag to s3B, "Kansas") When Zelena drowned Killian, Emma nearly lost him, and she panicked. So… what if they needed to revisit that moment for information about Zelena… and Killian has the opportunity to see Emma's reaction to his near-death? (shamelessly plotless oneshot for the sake of feelings) h/c, CS

*Untied - 3k+ (s2 divergence) Emma felt the hair on the back of her neck rise with instinct. The darkness of the night didn't help with the ominous feeling. This trailer wasn't here before Tamara showed up to town, and it was a small town. It wasn't from here. Emma picked the padlock, pulled it off, and yanked open the door. And there, tied to a chair, was Hook. CS h/c

And maybe, how she can fix it.

What Loneliness Sounds Like - 2k After hearing her mother's secret in the Echo Caves, Emma feels more unloved and unwanted than she ever has before. Only to make matters worse, she's in Neverland, land of the lost and abandoned, and she can suddenly hear music playing. (this was an alternate ending for my other fic "Echoes", but it can be read as a standalone)

The Emma Button - 1k "What is that thing?" "It's a device used for... talking... I don't bloody know. I press the Emma button and she answers usually." My take on why Killian decided to refer to Emma's speed dial as "the Emma button."

Good - 1k (missing scene/tag to "New York City Serenade") A conversation between Emma and Killian about her broken heart. And maybe the hope that it will mend, sooner rather than later.

i have a lot of writing that is underwraps for spoiler reasons or i'm just not ready to share it yet, but i'm going to break down the list of all my danny phantom wips, both for the au and not! under the cut because it's. really. long.

for "the world is having more fun than me (tonight)"

invisobang!! - it's next babes! i'm so excited for this one, holy shit. it's already 70k+ and i'm not done

double shot of summer phun fic! - post sin francisco, the specter squad goes to the beach to just hang out and have fun (no progress, just the idea. was it a bad idea to enter another phandom event when i'm swamped with one already? probably!)

heaven's grief brings hell's reign - immediately post invisobang, the fallout and consequences of that fic. one shot, mostly completed. probably gonna end up being rated M/E based on the way it started going last time i worked on it

by all means, i'm getting mad (but that don't mean i don't feel sorry for you) - also post invisobang, dealing with some of the consequences of that. this one is going to be fun

date fic - danny and mateo go on their first real date to the pier where the squad kinda solidified as a friend group. very cute, very sweet, i'm so fucking excited to get to this one.

sin francisco!! - man i so wanted to finish this in june, but trying to get out these last four works before invisobang took up all of my time. so i'll get to it when it's over! it's gonna be so good. funny, angsty, a little bit hot. plus a visit from the charmed ones, which i'm always partial to

with every sin i still wanna be holy - dan goes to therapy. that's the gist of the fic, basically. dan realizes that he wants to be better, do better, make amends all of that. but he's still a little bastard at heart

the weight of living - dan joins danny at college (junior year)! literally no one wanted this! but clockwork decided it was for the best for his rehabilitation and danny can't say no (although he tried). shenanigans ensue.

an unplanned number of junior and senior year antics - exactly what it sounds like. i haven't gotten that far, yet. maybe i'll use the next fic phight for it...

anything you say can and will be held against you (so only say my name) - a very smutty piece that's purely self-indulgent. it's already mostly written. i just need to finish it and figure out where in the timeline i want it.

so shall it be - the beginning of the end... emrys accidentally makes a wish to help his friends as things begin to fall apart

once more with feeling - the result of emrys' wish: a musical episode fic! things keep going down hill for our heroes, and nothing is resolved nicely by curtain fall

where do we go from here? - the fallout. heartbreaking. still makes me sob a little, all 800 words of it. these three fics came from a fucking joke in one of the servers i'm in and it's fucking angsty and i... it hurts my heart, babes. it really does.

hey there, shadow - an angsty, smutty fic with slight dub/con themes. it's uh. it's a fic, that's for sure. and i'm so excited to get to this point, fuck

my wish for you - danny makes an ill-advised wish to try and make a mistake better. it doesn't work as planned, and things get worse.

kneel to the crown - :risedanno: this is the culmination of everything. it's a romcom style fic, with its angsty, rated-E bits, and it's gonna be a bigun. like probably bigger than my invisobang when all's said and done. it's gonna be great.

ghost king danny welcomes mom home - exactly what's on the tin. i started this with phic phight but realized it needed more attention than i could give it during phight to pull off the style i wanted

you better promise me i'll be back in time - a phic phight relic! started for phight, but not finished yet because i needed time to plot out how it worked and how it fit into the au. but back to the future au with vlad redemption arc. very excited for this

another date fic (apparently) - this one is more of a series of oneshots of small dates. the arcade, the bookstore (ooh, danny taking mateo the bookshop tony took him to just to make out with him in the back... new idea), skateboard date (because at SOME FUCKING POINT i'm going to work in that danny knows how to fucking skateboard. eventually. or maybe i should just bite the dust and make it a hoverboard date), going bowling or skating, seeeing a movie outdoors (double feature with the last starfighter and space balls), and then going to the planetarium.

christmas fic! - that's it. that's as far as i got.

friend dates with the specter squad - supposed to be for valentine's day, but i fucking suck at making shit on time. mimic fic to "such a big big world (and only the tools to deal with a tiny portion of it)" where danny goes out with each of his friends to do a thing with them. supposed to take place early in the series before danny and mateo get together so their "friend" date mimics a romantic date.

the haunt - sam opens that underage club she mentioned early in the au. no i haven't forgotten, i just haven't had time 😭

not for the au!

and they were history project partners UFS version - literally exactly what it says. there were UFS hints here and there, but i wanted to change it and seaprate it from the au and make it its own fic with a UFS ending (thanks red 💖)

danny grave fic or j13 origin fic - sent this in an ask to floral during phic phight i think. based on the song "johnny" by american murder song

danny stripper identity reveal gray ghost - right there on the tin babes. this was a server idea, and i want to write it so bad. i love gray ghost so much, after phic phight i wanted to write more of them anyway

dp as told like syfy's alice - okay this one is a fucking doozy. it's based on a post by dreamwraith, actually, about the fallout from reign storm and the weird ambiguity of who was supposed to be king after. i have the character list written out. it's either everlasting trio or pitch pearl, but i think i'm leaning in the pitch pearl direction...

a forced reveal fic that floral and i batted around in my early days in the fandom - paulina brings blood blossoms to class and danny's reaction causes him to reveal himself. it's got a great start, i just didn't have the energy to continue it in the midst of the au work i'd been doing

perfect - an angsty fic based on the song perfect by simple plan. i have a fic already titled after this song, but i want a truly angsty one where danny's reveal to his parents doesn't go so well...

pitch pearl tuck everlasting au - ALSO sent this to floral during phic phight and FUCK am i so excited to work on it. dark ages raised immortal phantom, plucky and naive danny, a tragic lovestory... i need invisobang to be over so i can work on this NOW

primeval crossover - british tv show from the same era as DP, deals with anomalies in time that bring them dinosaurs. the anomalies are actually portals in this au and the villain from primeval is the big bad danny was chasing that landed him and team phantom in london surrounded by men in black pointing guns at them. probably gonna be everlasting trio.

2021 Fic Roundup Meme

Total Fics Posted: 1,036, but that will be out of date by the actual end of 2021 because I need to do daily drabbles and finish the Steve Bingo drabbles by the end of the 31st! Total Words Posted: 147,576, which ironically is the lowest annual total, I think, since I started doing these roundups back on LiveJournal. Although I don’t think I even bothered to do a 2019 or 2020 roundup because I’d posted virtually nothing. Total Words (of Anything Excluding Blogs) Written: Somewhere between 250,000-300,000, I think. The first quarter of 2021 was dismal for writing -- not just for me, I think, but for most of the, like, writing world. So I can’t be too down on myself about it. Most of what I’ve written this year, I’ve posted right away because it’s been drabbles, but I do have probably 50k of unposted Old Guard WIP stuff and 70k so far of unposted Stucky. And 7k of unposted Wanda Maximoff smut that may never get finished, haha. My favorite fic story this year: I mean, the only one that “counts” that I posted this year is Wish You Were Here, which is on an extended hiatus at the moment. I do like WYWH and I think it’s not bad, but I definitely struggle with writing it -- vignettes are essentially a bunch of short stories and I forgot that I massively struggle with short stories (ironically, given drabbles). And I still haven’t figured out what happens character-growth-wise during one part of it and it’s killing me. My best story this year: It’s hard, because I’ve posted so fucking many drabbles and most of them are like, “well, this exists” but every once in a while I get a turn of phrase exactly right. I can’t remember any in particular that I’m particularly proud of, but there aren’t any that I’m NOT proud of, either. Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: It sticks in my craw a little bit when someone requests a drabble and then doesn’t give it a kudo, especially if it’s for a more rarepair or niche fandom where, you know, no one else is going to, either. But that’s just me being crabby. I do feel like maybe I would feel more urgency with regard to WYWH if I felt like there were an audience for the story, but I also knew going in that it was a minor, non-canon pairing in a fandom with a MASSIVE canon ship that dominates EVERYTHING in the fic sphere, so I can’t actually be rightfully disappointed by that, either. I would love anything I write to grab people’s attention in a way that made them want to reach out and comment or message or kudo, but I also know that we’re moving into a post-feedback internet era, so again, I can’t rightfully want more than I get. I was spoiled by 1D fandom and, more than that, hugely spoiled by web 1.0 fandom and LJ fandom when it comes to feedback and attention. These days I’m just flattered anyone reads at all. (Although I will be Literally Devastated if no one reads my stucky when it comes out, I’m ngl.) Sexiest Story: I don’t tend to write sexy drabbles very often because it’s hard to build sexual tension in fewer than 100 words, so the payoff to a sexy drabble is always a little... premature. (Ba dum bum!) But here are the E rated drabbles if you want them! Most fun story: Oooh... honestly, pretty much every day, there’s at least one drabble that is particularly fun for me to write, so I’m not sure. The Continuing Adventures of Cap & Molly tickle me (thanks @therebeccaw) and I love writing Yelena/Kate. I love dunking on Booker in Booker/Nile fic. I love writing Darcy. I love writing the Peter Parkers and MJ. I love writing Gomez/Morticia. I think probably some of the Addams Family drabbles were the most fun, maybe. Maybe. Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: To coopt myself from the 2012 meme, “if I write a fic and it doesn’t change my feelings on the characters or fandom in some way, then I don’t think I wrote it correctly.” Hardest story to write: WYWH. Biggest surprise: Actually sticking to the drabbling! In the past when I tried Three-Line Fic Thursday and Five-Sentence Friday, I failed miserably, and I’ve failed myself at drabble challenges, too. But for some reason this time it’s stuck and is genuinely working to remind me that I can get words out, I can have ideas, and I can get those ideas out in words. Yay! A story I want remembered: I mean, if I wrote anything this year that anyone remembers fondly, that makes me happy. Resolutions for 2022: FINISH LENT FROM TOMORROW (TODAY WAS TOO SMALL FOR US). BE A FINISHER. FINISH THE THING. Also, do Femslash February and a drabble March Madness, probably.

I started another BNHA fic reclist and it got long so I'm putting it here as I tend to.... on my ATLA sideblog. Don't worry about the logic of this too much, haha. Anyways, a lot of these are pretty well known, but maybe some are new to you! I'm also giving pitches for why I like them geared towards specific requests, and I'll list the original request at the bottom of the post so if you guys have further recs that meet these requirements let me know!

Not all who wander are lost -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/17950646 -- 27k words, complete -- Has probably been rec’d here before, and I was re-reading it today as a treat, I still love it a lot! All four Todoroki siblings run away together after Rei burns Shouto. I love the characterization, and how the author draws on their own experience as a foreigner working in Japan, and how they did their research on missing child cases and child homelessness in Japan (it doesn't go hugely in depth but I appreciate the authors' notes discussing this, even if it's, well, incredibly tragic. There’s more light hearted cultural notes as well!)

make this feel like home -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/21852745 -- 27k words, complete -- we already rec'd this to you but adding it here for completion. A character-focused Todosibs fic with EXCELLENT portrayal of sibling relationships. I re-read this one A LOT.

Dragon Head, Snake Tail -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/17195510 -- 61k words, incomplete -- Another Todosib favorite that deals with canon and also an AU in which Rei got a divorce and everyone mostly grew up away from Endeavor. I love how the sibling relationships are depicted, but I also love how the author is a huge kanji nerd who fully lean's into Horikoshi's love for punny names and the long authors notes explaining how they came up with every new name in the fic. It's occasionally bittersweet but mostly a fun & humorous fic.

Twin Swap -- https://archiveofourown.org/series/1867879 -- 55k words, on hiatus with 2 complete arcs -- do you want Todosibs AND great villain characterization? (well mostly Fuyumi & Touya, but Natsuo is there for a bit too). Anyways the fic is mostly pretty lighthearted in tone, but it's also not afraid to hit hard in the characterization department, and I really love how this author wrote all of the League members. I re-read this one a lot.

No Such Thing As a Hopeless Case -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/16806328 -- 14k words, hiatus (and right on a cliffhanger too!) -- All Might accidentally kinda adopts the league of villains? Again, great LOV characterization, and I think you'll like how it explores the societal factors and personal tragedies that lead them to and keep them at the margins of society. also, some really terrible puns, which are my favorite thing

You're probably aware of this fic since it's the highest hit count in the fandom, but I really think it fits your requirement and writing and character work! I know some other people who think the writing and character work are mediocre though, which I'm baffled by... but YMMV? The beginning is weaker and my absolute FAVORITE part is the Nighteye arc, which is the last 20% of the fic, but I would say it really starts to hit its stride by chapter 9~10? If you aren't enjoying it by then it's probably fair to expect it won't catch your interest later.

I can't believe no one has written any "self insert as Bakugo" fanfics... - https://archiveofourown.org/works/17662220 -- 70k words, infrequent updates -- I like this one for taking a weird as hell premise and REALLY rolling with it. It's somehow pretty similar to a lot of more positive takes on Bakugo's relationship with the Midoriyas while also being very much it's own thing. The author is NOT "far out of high school" though -- it's hilariously clear from the SI's reactions to certain quirks that the writer started this while taking lower division universtiy physics (and personally I love that). Also appreciate SI!Bakugo's war with Nedzu to get proper counseling and mental health support for class 1-a after all the shit they've been through.

It's Over, Isn't It (it's only yet begun) -- https://archiveofourown.org/series/1269638 -- 66k words, abandoned series with several complete stories -- AU where All Might dies rescuing Tenko from AfO but other than that it's a heartwarming fix-it! Same author as YUTS, very positive portrayal of Nighteye, excellent character writing for many other characters.

A social media fic with quirkless Izuku interning with Nighteye as an analyst. Has some very interesting exploration of the legalities of Hero Society and how the status quo developed.

For Fools and Utopias -- https://archiveofourown.org/works/22547254 -- 89k words, updates regularly -- okay grace is the one who rec’d this fic to ME but to anyone stumbling across this reclist on tumblr, THIS FIC IS A MUST READ. Absolutely the BEST, more thought out and gutting portrayal of the flaws of the hero system, and how the different characters struggle with it. This fic GOT to me, hard, I’m still thinking about it a lot. Takes place roughly a decade post-canon, in an AU where Izuku never met All Might or went to UA, and nothing got fixed (yet! they’re trying!!). Features absoulely STELLAR characterization of Midoriya, Shinsou, Todoroki, his sibblings, Ragdoll, and more!!

I remember it very clearly that one of the first feedback I left for Z when I got to know her fics was begging her for a novel, and that I felt the same when I started reading your works. And now you both are writing novels and I am the happiest.

I don’t know what your plans for them are, but publish it where you will, put a price tag on it and I will be first in line to dive head first into it.

I was thinking of doing this since last year, and then I decided to start on one in March. Spring is usually my least motivated time for fic sort of writing because it's my least favorite season and doesn't have any fun holidays like Halloween, Christmas, or Valentine's Day.

But in the month of March, I wrote a little over 50k on it, which is a little less than half lol! So, it wouldn't be a struggle to get it written at least. Then, it's off to the powers that be to see if it's worth a damn lol, and who knows on that!

My plan is to have three completed before I send them off just so any prospective editors will have three samples of writing from very different genres to choose from. Plus, then I won't kick myself for thinking, 'Fuck, I should have gone with horror!' Or whatever lol.

The one I'm working on now is mostly adventure with some romance, but novel style romance, not fic style lol. It's set in the 20's about treasure hunting in Egypt. Bad guys, booby traps, expedition into the unknown sort of thing, with a love triangle and some fun bantering etc. I'm having a lot of fun with it so far! I got some early feedback on it from a published author that was favorable and had some very useful advice.

My second idea is the Exorcist Jacques idea expanded another 70k words lol. There would just be a lot more of everything and it would continue on through the murder trial with the now possessed guy and dealing with that and the aftermath etc. Horror vibes mostly.

The third idea is mystery/thriller with some romance, adventure, and horror thrown in because it’s me. Kind of Da Vinci Code x Ninth Gate vibes. Basically, it involves a woman getting dragged into some weird occult stuff and uncovering secret societies, deals with the devil, etc, and people then coming after her because she knows too much. But she has some nefarious help along the way 😈

besides working on my book, most of my efforts this past month went into working on the narumitsu commission––which has uhhh gotten Very Long, because i’m me and always get carried away lmao. but tbh i am really happy with it so far and can’t wait til i’m able to post the whole thing (ideally by the end of this month? we’ll seeee)

i also finally finished editing ch 5 of the sylvix dreamscape fic and it has been beta’d! i just gotta do a few more edits and post it, which will be sometime next week. still gotta finish up a draft of ch 6 so i can start editing that as well so, hopefully will be able to delve into that soon.

this past month i also finally started posting sierra’s (extremely late) bday fic which is a wenzhou modern au!! i’ve had such fun writing it and can’t wait to post the rest of it! so yeah hoping to do a bit more editing/drafting/posting of that during october.

i have not started editing the renga fic yet, but hoping to do that soon!! ....i feel like it may be unrealistic to try and post it by the end of this month so uhh i’ll probably shoot for next month on that one, but depends on how much editing it needs.

aaand lastly, i am super excited to be a writer for unfolding melody zine, which is an ace attorney/klapollo zine!!! so i will be working on a draft of my piece for that. i really love the concept i decided on and i think it will be a lot of fun. :D

...so yeah once again i have probably bitten off more than i can chew anddd i have like an embarrassingly large backlog of things to write/edit but uh we’ll see what i can do!!! 😤

prooooobably throw your shadow over me. there is zero resolution since it’s a missing scene set in late season 3 and, well..... lol. it’s seriously miserable.

Just the one Hannigram AU I think???? I have never been super into crossovers tbh.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

lol yes, but it’s been a while???? although i did get one comment on a fic last year that wasn’t technically hate but it put such a bad taste in my mouth it might as well have been. it’s never a good idea to tell someone you don’t like the way they write a character, regardless of your intent. it is okay to simply hit the back button and move on with your day. :)

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

So much. Maybe too much???? Whatever. I really love writing deeply meaningful and descriptive sex that feels like an entire ~experience for my readers.

Yes! @lazybakerart and I collaborated on a Hannibal fic years ago and we had so much fun.

What’s your all time favorite ship?

Queliot now and forever. I have never in all my life had my heart completely fucking consumed like this. I’ve written close to a half million words about these bitches since 4x05 aired and I think I’m physically incapable of stopping at this point.

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

That season one AU I started writing when season 4 ended that’s an entire 70k mess sitting in a doc I haven’t touched since 2019. There were some really cool ideas in it (including an alternate mosaic timeline that was like a probability spell sorta?????) and I mayyyyy one day incorporate some of it into another fic, but as a whole I simply do not think it’s worth the effort it would take to make it good enough to post.

What are your writing strengths?

I think I write sex and romance well??? Also: conversations, similes, and sensory language.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Last night I had to describe the suspenders Quentin was trying on. I will probably have to spend an entire day editing that paragraph alone. I can go on for pages and pages about this deeply meaningful and emotional shit and then freeze up when I have to get a character dressed or make them move from one room to the next... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

This is a deeply ironic question for me to answer at the moment because I generally do not do this BUT there’s a moment in the new chapter of a litany of dreams that I’m working on where Eliot says... something. In another language. During a very specific scene. And it just sort of happened???? It’s a term of endearment (that I googled about ten different ways just to make sure I wasn’t fucking it up lmao) and I’m still 50/50 on whether it will make it into the final draft of the chapter but right now every time I think about my heart mayyyybe starts to beat a little faster. Eliot Waugh is a goddamn sap, y’all.

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

My time cast a spell on you series without a doubt. I am SO PROUD of the work I’ve put into the 200k written for this ‘verse so far. It’s the biggest challenge keeping everything tonally consistent, but so deeply rewarding every time I finish a chapter and read it over and feel like I’ve accomplished just that. I’ve learned so much about my process and who I want to be as a writer from this ‘verse. And I’m so excited about all the messy and emotionally complex stuff I have planned for the remainder of part two. And allllll the other fics I have planned for this ‘verse in the future. 💖

About my writing ||

- I’ve written just about everything under the sun, but my current WIPs are an urban gothic and… my co-author and I haven’t really decided on a genre for our series. We half-seriously call it a historical fiction, even though it takes place in the present day. It’s more of a spy/espionage thriller, with some jabs at historical events.

- I’ve been writing for almost 14 years (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). I got my start in fanfiction for a fandom that will at this time remain undisclosed. I started working on original stories when I was in high school, and I just haven’t been able to put then pen down, since.

- I write for the YA/adult fiction cusp, which I believe is called new adult. My series will cater to older teens or new adults, and my urban gothic is strictly adult

- A lot of my work is related to character study. My work strives to be character driven more than plot driven. Developing my characters is my favorite part of my writing process.

- My co-author and I love to make vine compilations that we think are fitting to our characters and come up with absurd headcanons about them. It helps when I’ve hit a rut in my writing.

- I write for the love of it. Ultimately, I’d love to get published one day, but for the time being, I love my teeny audience and after my stint writing fanfic, I’m ready to get serious about my original projects.

WIPs ||

Wretches and Kings: An undeniable crime problem plagues the city of Easthold, an affluent city rife with thieves and bandits of all pedigrees. This in and of itself is not all that strange. What’s strange is the incredibly high volume of unsolved crimes, of acts no one has claimed, ones even the Easthold Police Department can’t even begin to find blame for. Even when committed in broad daylight, even when the police arrive on the scene in the middle of a heist, no one manages to catch more than unclear glimpses of the culprits, no bullets hit their marks, and when all is said and done there is somehow never any reliable evidence. No camera ever manages to catch a thing, no trap is ever successful, and never has a single witness managed a coherent report, like somehow none of them ever pay enough attention. Like somehow what they’ve seen can never be put into words.

Status: First draft completed (Approx. 140k words)

LEGION (a four part series): Kerri Stevens was born and raised into her life as an operative for Legion, a top secret espionage operation dedicated to maintaining global order, to protect people. Charlotte Moore joined because, well, it seemed like a good time. As Named Agents–the best of the best, operatives identified by a letter of the phonological alphabet–they’re each talented and respected in their fields.

And their recent actions have put them at risk of losing their jobs.

To prove their loyalty, Charlotte and Kerri are assigned to assassinate the other. Whoever emerges victorious will have the benefit of keeping their rank and title. Whoever loses… well. After an unfortunate comedy of errors reveals to them that they work under the same employer, they reach a hesitant truce and team up for the sake of unearthing the mystery.

As Kerri and Charlotte set out to dig into Legion’s infrastructure, aided by a pair of similarly displaced agents, they discover that their employer’s foundations are built upon lies and deceptions deeper, and far more personal, than they could imagine.

Status: Second draft in progress (70k/??? words so far)

2021 Goals ||

1. Finish the second draft of Legion - most likely during the summer, when the school year is wrapped up and I’ll have a ton more free time on my hands

2. Begin brainstorming the second draft of W&K. Solve plot holes and tie up loose ends left behind from the first draft

3. Find a low maintenance writing community that can tolerate my horrifically inconsistent posting. I struggle to follow a schedule between everything else I’m juggling in life at the moment. If anyone knows of any low maintenance writing groups, I’d love to join!!

On September 6, 2019 I posted my very first Mindhunter fic to AO3, two whiskeys straight. At the time, I had no idea I was about to spend the next year of my life writing for this pairing, religiously re-watching the two amazing seasons we’ve gotten (so far!), and enjoying perhaps one of the best fandom experiences of my life. I thought I should mark the occasion by reminiscing on all of my 51 works I’ve produced in the last year, and thanking some of the people who have encouraged and inspired me.

Enough about me, though! I’ve read some fics in this fandom that have truly blown me away. I’m still going to be thinking about some of these in five years whether I’m still writing for this pairing or not.

TOP 5 FAVORITE FICS BY OTHER AUTHORS:

1. Vacancy by arbitrarily on AO3. As far as I know, this is the only MH fic this person ever wrote, but it was literally my gateway drug to the pairing. Everything about this fic is amazing - the prose, the pacing, the characterization, the visceral imagery, and the brutal, almost unbearable emotion. 100/10 recommend.

2. All The Sins (You Never Had The Courage to Commit) by @mormon-hair. I’ve been reading fanfic for a long time, but this is the first one that actually brought me to tears. It’s a crime boss/ undercover FBI agent AU that I was not expecting to evoke such strong emotions from me, but by the end I was rooting for them to be together so strongly that I actually shed a few tears.

3. Moons, Junes, and Ferris Wheels by moonrocks. I thought about this fic for a solid week after I read it, then I re-read it probably five more times. The ending was not at all what I was expecting, and even though there’s no clear-cut resolution I kind of love the fact that it’s left with so many questions as the show itself often is.

4. The Lesser Key of Holden Ford by @vivarocksteady. Holy shit this fic blew my socks off!! It is not for the faint of heart. There’s demon possession, the forces of evil, and religious guilt all working against Bill and Holden before they finally get to admit their true feelings to each other, but goddamn was it fucking worth it. I’ve read this one a second time also and will probably re-read again in the future.

5. Weak Hearts and Blank Spots also by moonrocks (and including the subsequent sequels) This series stole my heart. I waited impatiently every week for the update and tried to be the first person to comment every time because I loved it that much. It’s just my type - lots of angst, mutual pining, and hurt feelings before Bill and Holden manage to get together.

6. Honorable mentions: A Sudden Red by by mormon-hair, Stripped Down to the Bone and Flirting With An Addiction I Can’t Shake Off both by @bambikieren. (and their current project But to the Dead, the Truth which isn’t complete yet, but I’m loving so far)

I’d also just like to do a quick shout-out to all the people who have contributed to my success in this fandom whether currently or in the past, left comments, encouraged me, given me prompts, or just been all around awesome:

There’s so many other people who I have interacted with over the course of the last year that I can’t remember, or I just don’t know their tumblr urls, or they aren’t on tumblr at all. If I’ve left anyone out, just know I’m collectively imagining all the good times and kind words this fandom has given me. I’m also thinking about the people who have read all of my fics religiously, but were too shy to comment or reach out - hey, I love you guys too and I do notice when I see kudos or reblogs/likes from people I have never spoken to.

The last year has been crazy, confusing, and sometimes scary with everything that’s going on in the world right now, but this fandom and pairing has been a comforting presence, a little escape from the fray. I feel as if I’ve become a better author in this year of record-breaking writing, and I’ve put out some works that I’m still going to be proud of in five years time.
