Stupid War - 04/18/2024
In a delayed (from lack of US support) response to Iran's direct missile and drone strikes to Israel on April 13th, Israel launched missiles and drones in a surprise attack on Iran's military airbase in Isfahan today. That is where Iran's command and control center is located and is their headquarters of nuclear research. It appears they didn't hit any of their nuclear facilities. It was probably more than just a show of force and to put them off balance. There's a good chance they'll launch more attacks. I fear that Iran's evil regime might instigate violent assaults through some of their terrorists that were let into the US through the southern border by this administration and the UN. I hope Israel can destroy a lot of their nuke sites, obviously they won't be able to take out the ones that are underground. Joe Biden or anyone from the White House is yet to publicly announce a response or make any kind of statement. The attack occurred at about 11 pm Eastern time, so I suppose they didn't want to wake him; after all, sleepy, creepy, compromised Joey needs his sleep. Not many details have been reported yet, I suppose they'll find out more tomorrow morning. I hate writing about war, and since it's late I'll end it here. Stupid war.

the linguistic hoops that liberals will go jump through to describe the institutional violence of non-western states without acknowledging the obvious truth that america does the exact same things on a larger scale is ridiculous. “country X is such an authoritarian nightmare, they have prison camps/internment camps/gulags!!”
Tumblr media
“no, because people are sent there for no reason! they’re imprisoned on false charges just because of their ethinicity!! people are forced to confess even though they’re innocent!”
Tumblr media
“no!!!! it’s different!! in country X the detainees are forced into modern-day slavery to make money for the government!! the guards illegally torture, rape, and beat them!!”

Illyana Rasputin and the Russians in Ultimate Invasion #4
I know this is supposed to be a dystopia, but be honest—even aside from the fact that Illyana gets to rule, doesn’t it look like Omega Red is in a better place mentally than we’be ever seen him in any reality? I guess Illyana takes care of her people.

i've been ruminating a lot on it because i think i'm bad at putting my thoughts into words but i need y'all to understand that while there are absolutely a lot of Not Good Things about the finals being held in saudi arabia for three years...the way people seem to treat is as morally black and white is shortsighted and unhelpful.
realistically the players traveling there will be protected. it may be uncomfortable, it's certainly not ideal, but they will travel there for a few weeks, play their tennis, then leave. there are a lot of women, a lot of queer people who actually live in saudi arabia who cannot just leave, who are actually subjected to laws and social climates...and to me it just seems very disrespectful to that actual lived experience, for everybody to sort of turn their noses up and get on their high horses. of course, if the players wish to opt out, that is their choice, but that is their choice to make. that's their judgement. not ours.
and then, what about a tournament like miami? florida is literally experiencing one of the worst active regressions that i've seen in the us (granted i'm young). things like critical race theory and lgbtq+ ed are being removed from curriculums, rights for trans youth, trans healthcare, etc. are going backwards. abortion rights? gun violence? and yes i know that the laws and climate in saudi arabia are different gravy, i understand that, but my point is, no one would ever DREAM of arguing against hosting a tournament in miami despite all of these issues. and we can extend this to a lot of other tournaments! i mean, all the outrage about fifa hosting a world cup in qatar, but we don't have any of these sentiments about doha? i've seen other people bring up that the finals were hosted in singapore when gay marriage was still illegal there. we've already talked about italy's fascist prime minister. and i could go on and on and on about the war crimes of countries like the us or the uk - is the us not participating actively in genocide right now? where is the standard? if you argue against hosting the finals in saudi arabia for the reason of human rights, to me it seems you have to uphold that standard for the location you do land on. and i can guarantee, you will not find a single country in the world with clean hands.
i want to be clear i am not arguing that hosting the finals in saudi arabia is a good thing, especially for three years, especially because it's definitely going there because of money, and not for any of the "good" reasons i think some people want us to believe about "improving the region" (which is very weirdly white savior-esque anyway). i don't really have an official "conclusion" to this discussion.
what i am arguing is that i think a lot of the protests against saudi arabiahosting the finals are more an example of implicit anti-arab bias and islamophobia, rather than genuine discussion. key word implicit: i don't think most people are purposefully trying to be anti-arab/islamophobic. or at least, i'd like to believe nobody is. but i also think, particularly in the west, there is already so much of this xenophobic sentiment ingrained. and this is why i think it's really really REALLY important to check ourselves when we talk about it instead of just jumping straight to the human rights conversation without a second thought.
i'll say it plainly: i don't think the finals should be held in saudi arabia. but for me, it has more to do with sportswashing, with the dangers of the way money is thrown around in sports, and because i think it's more evidence that the wta doesn't care about player welfare but rather about making a profit (what else is new). human rights are absolutely a concern of mine, but how is it fair to hold saudi arabia to a standard that we don't seem to care about for literally anybody else?
literally look at the us's ugly ugly history, past and present, and tell me why we deserve to host a tennis tournament.

see, the thing about Hidan is he is presented as kind of a one note character. Funny murder man who yells a lot and screams about his death cult. Fantastic. Love that for him.
but the other thing about Hidan is that the akatsuki is almost* entirely composed of people who were fucked over by the system in some way, so if he was JUST a funny murder man, he would be an outlier. (*zetsu does NOT count)
and the other other thing about Hidan is that Jashinism is explicitly about shared suffering. Hidan feels all of it. Hidan revels in all of it. Hidan believes that the bond of suffering is where humans truly understand one another on a fundamental level. He's not just killing and sacrificing people, he's sacrificing himself. He just gets back up.
And given that Pein & Konan's goals as the akatsuki are to crush the world with war the same way that Ame was crushed by war, and Yugakure went from a shinobi village to a hot springs town, implying they lost so much manpower that they literally couldn't function with a ninja-based economy anymore... hey, Hidan? What suffering have you experienced, that you want to share with others?
I want to understand you, Hidan.

Not to get deep here or anything but i really think i dont want to have a relationship with my sister anymore and ive been reflecting on that a lot. like sure she didnt abuse me or really do anything to directly traumatize me, but she voted against me having human rights because im queer, as well as voting for a party that wants to harm first nations people despite both of us being first nations i just.... i dont think i can forgive her for that. weve had laughs and good times together but i find myself unable to forgive her for her politics. i wouldn't tolerate bigotry from anyone else, i shouldnt tolerate it from someone just cause theyre family.

@bunniesandbeheadings I might misunderstand the text you linked. How could Mary call Edward a bastard? KoA was dead by then, and of course widowers can remarry. Calling Jane a legitimate Queen in no way would take away KoA’s status as Queen?
all of hviii's marriages after catherine of aragon were not recognised by the catholic church/pope. when he needed dispensations for these marriages, like for affinity (his marriage to jane was one of them), they were granted by the anglican church, whose authority the pope and other catholic monarchies of christendom did not recognise (the last real 'papal' henrician appointment, irony of ironies, was thomas cranmer's). there was also the matter of all marriages taking place when the realm was in schism, thus "all other women of henry concubines and not wives". prince edward was (legitimate) heir as reified by parliament; both retroactively from the succession act of 1536 and in name by the one of 1543.
foreign dignitaries of course, when they visited, would honour whoever henry's wife was as queen to maintain good relations and as matter of diplomacy (this wasn't, of course, done by the imperial until the last weeks of AB's time as queen, but otherwise, she was, even if 'frostily' by the french as in 1534). but they were often under instruction to treat this status as transient, as lauren mackay has summarized in her biography of chapuys, for example, charles v was rather mercenary in his attitude towards jane seymour, continually referring to her as henry's 'mistress' well into their marriage in his own instructions to chapuys:
"It appears Charles [V] was at times rather ruthless in regards to Jane, despite the fact that her being in power benefitted Mary. Charles referred to her in several dispatches as Henry's mistress rather than queen [...]" Inside the Tudor Court, Lauren Mackay
#bunniesandbeheadings#replies#there's like the question of why mary did not attempt to overthrow edward while he was king if she didn't believe his reign was legitimate#which is an interesting one...#but 1) her biographers really discount how much of a dissembler she was#2) loades theorized that she actually did buy into the henrician supremacy and her own illegitimacy and simply had a turnaround once#edward died believing that was god's sign she was the rightful heir thus legitimate...which i find an oversimplistic explanation. to say#the least...#i think psychologically in the last years of the edwardian regime she had something of a redeux of the AB years?#this belief england was going to fall into perdition due to 'evil councilors' but she couldn't do anything to reverse it#which is why there's an escape attempt not just an escape plan as in the former but she also decides against this in the last hour#so yes. what was her plan? or hope? it might've been that edward vi would be excommunicated as he reached his majority#and that charles v took up the call to invade and england became one of his dominions#and she would be set up as regent as he set up his other female relatives as regent in his absence#idk if i'd say jane being in power benefitted mary. all the 'benefits' she received came from her swearing to oaths she'd been pressurized#to swear to for the past two years...?#anyway this was illuminating and instructive. to me. it best explains imo why she took such a defiant attitude towards edward. she wouldn't#have seen it as defiant if she didn't believe in his authority in the first place

A WOMAN WHO’S JUST IN HIS HEAD
“In death, Jane became the ultimate consort; unblemished (especially in the eyes of her capricious and tyrannical husband), ever young, and the mother of a surviving son. Instead of merely being the wife who ‘died’ and in recognition of her saint-like life — which went beyond the medieval ideal of saintly queenship — Jane should actually be remembered as the wife who was (effectively) canonised.” - Aidan Norrie

For the media enjoyers who didn’t pay attention in their 9th grade literature class and presently refuse to believe there’s purpose for “problematic” characters, relationships, tropes and/or consider anyone reading those elements as interesting is doing so to undermine the “proper” “good” and “true” elements of a piece of media.

@kit-just-kit sent: [ 𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 ] - for Igor & EvilKit as I need the tale of their first kiss!
Tumblr media
It is humiliating to be made to sit in the waiting room of her offices like this. Kit’s receptionist has already warned Igor twice not to smoke inside the building, but after waiting this long, he’s decided to blatantly ignore her instruction, much to the small woman's obvious chagrin. Nicholai gave up an hour ago, choosing to search the city streets for some food instead.
During a late-night phone call Miss Prince had teased that the Pakhan wouldn’t dare get on a plane to London and that is exactly what he did, arriving at Heathrow only a few hours ago. All this way and now this? She is testing him, testing his patience, testing his mettle.
Quietly Bortsov sits, seething, lurid images playing through his mind; imagining the fantasies she has delicately woven through his mind all this time; seeds she has carefully planted so that they will bloom wild and wanton.
Grinding his cigarette out against Kit’s marble floors, Igor determines it is time. Rising from seat, to the sound of much protest from the receptionist, Igor strides towards the large oak double doors ahead of him and swings them wide open. Inside sit a War General, a Foreign Diplomat and a British Politician, all positioned to direct their attention towards Kit. She looks impeccable as always, and in this moment, more commanding than ever.
“I want to fuck you.” The words are blustered, blunt and aggressive in their need. Striding across the room Bortsov ignores the startled stares and shocked gasps and grips her. “I want to fuck you.” He repeats, as if it is his only infallible truth. Tilting his head, he catches Kit’s eye then claims her mouth in a desperately deep kiss; the first they have ever shared; a release of shared fever.
Backing her up against her desk, his tattooed hands grip at the hem of her skirt to hitch it up. Hearing the receptionist behind them desperately try to remove the other men from the room, Igor grins against her biting lips before beginning to kiss a wet trail down the line of her throat, his hunger utterly unabashed.
