A Certain Level of Un-maintained

Every time I see and old, abandoned factory, I think almost the same thing. – I would love to explore in there. It can’t just be any factory, it has to be a certain level of un-maintained: Broken windows and loose brick must be present with some over-grow. I think those kinds of abandoned factories are beautiful.

A group of people a long time ago spent a lot of time ago spent a lot of money and effort to build this giant structure, and then more groups of people would spend large parts of their days and lives in the building just trying to be something. Can you imagine the amount of thoughts that existed there? What did the people think about? Were they happy? Depressed? Were they neutral and numb during the work day? I hope the thoughts were profound at least some of the time. I hope their minds all got the chance to wander.

I hope that the building got to hold every emotion. I hope it still gets to see some of them when wild animals creep in. When the happy little birds are chirping in its rafters. When the busy mice move inside after a night of foraging. When the stray cat is cold and seeking shelter, I hope the factory can hold all of these animals and their needs.

When people think of factories, I don’t think they typically think about nature. They don’t always correspond, and they don’t always share the best of relationships. Abandoned factories are different- they no longer spread their noxious fumes into the air. They no longer produce garbage. Now- they exist for the needy. They are shelter for the shelter-less. They aren’t a waste of space that humans enter to spend part of their day and then go home to their real shelters anymore, now they are simply a habitat for those who need it. Even if they stand empty with not even an ant, they stand ready to provide what they can now. No one owns them- no one uses them. They are wild now, and I want nothing more than to explore their wild.

Last year, I met Peter and Jenn from @alaskahelicoptertours At the time, I didn’t truly believe I would ever have the opportunity to work with them, because it really just seemed like a dream. Then, there I was taking my first ever helicopter ride in December of 2019, learning how to escort guests to #knikglacier Fast forward through the crazy 9+ months we’ve all been through, and they reached out to let me know about an opportunity to guide with them.
