tag game (Horizon)
stolen from @hellcheercaine!!! Thanks for the excuse to put off starting work for another few minutes.
1.ride or die ship (your otp): Aloy/Talanah. my rotten soldiers my sweet cheeses my good-time gals
2. most annoying ship: nah you know I don't play that game <3
3. second favourite ship: Aloy/Yarra
4. favourite platonic relationship: Aloy and Erend, Talanah and Milu, Aloy and Sylens
5. underrated ship: gonna say Aloy/Yarra here too. Also Fashav/Kotallo, Beta/Milu, Alva/Seyka (thoughts of an angsty Loyalist!Federa fic won't leave my brain ALONE)
6. overrated ship: see question 2 bls
7. one thing i would change in canon: Oh man. There are...many things, lmao. The clear and obvious one is having Talanah join the base (as we now know was the original intention [rolling_in_the_deep.mp3]). But since that one is a given--completely toss the Zeniths out of HFW. Ground the narrative conflict in gathering the subfunctions, the collapsing biosphere, and Regalla's rebellion instead. Bring GAIA back only at the very end. Save the Zeniths for the major H3 antagonist instead, negating the need for Nemesis as the Bigger Fish. How absolutely baller would it have been if the Beta reveal came as a post-credits stinger instead? (Gerard's voice: "Are you ready to finally make yourself useful, Beta?" and then a camera pan over the face of a Sobeck clone, GOD)
8. something canon did right: The entirety of "Deep Secrets of the Earth" in HZD was a masterclass in storytelling. Every part of exploring PZD HQ was remarkable. The datapoints, the juxtaposition of "The Bad News" with "The Good News," the latter of which as the culminating reveal of the mystery that's been building throughout the entire narrative--it's pretty much perfection.
9. a thing i'm proud of creating for the fandom PLEASE BRAG ABOUT YOURSELF I WANT TO SEE/READ YOUR ART: may I present to y'all my AO3 trashpile
10. a character who is perfect to me (wouldn't change a thing): ALVA. My personal shining star amongst the HFW companions. I'm also contractually obligated to say Talanah here, even if I want to shake her by the shoulders sometimes (affectionate)
11. the character i relate to the most and why: This is a tough one. I see pieces of myself in a number of the characters, but I'm not sure if there's one that I'm like, yes, that is ME. I could prrooobably say Alva again? But it's not a definitely one-to-one.
12. character(-s) i hate the most and why: All the homies hate Ted Faro, that's for sure. But that's low-hanging fruit. So I'll give Amadis as well, though not for the seemingly-obvious reason--I cannot stand the sole purpose for which he was written, from the comic all the way through his weird unsatisfying ending in HFW. He's a repeated character with a repeated conflict that was already handled much more compellingly through Nil and is rendered useless and storyless by the end of Need to Know. Bringing him back in H3 would be the sorest mistake the narrative could make aside from a sacrificial ending for Aloy. He's just unneeded character bloat in an already-admittedly-bloated cast.
13. something i've learned from the fandom: You will make some of your very best friends here. Everyone is creative and hilarious and so smart. We all connect to the Horizon universe in a different way, and sharing your enthusiasm with others is what just makes the world feel even richer than what you could have imagined.
14. three tags i seek out on ao3: I typically don't browse AO3 directly!
15. a song i strongly associate with my otp/favourite character: you're gonna make me pick ONE?? oh man, okay. so this changes by the day, and today I'll say Oceanator's "I Would Find You" is THEE Hawk and Thrush anthem.
tagging: since I stole this untagged, I challenge YOU to do the same! Choose your fandom and talk about it!

Stoops Issue 12 (DIY Issue) is now available!
So I've been doing this magazine for 9 years now and you would think I would have streamlined the process for releases, but being that it is still mostly a one person operation over here with no real industry support or ad dollars, I'm still just doing my best. Each issue hinges on whatever time and money I have to throw into it with hopes of breaking even but mostly coming to terms with the reality that I am spending what others may spend on mortgages, or cars, or alcoholism to put out a skateboarding publication for my own sanity, grasping for a sense of purpose, and for the few of you actually appreciate it. One day I will come to my senses and give it up, but for now, it is somehow still moving along with no drop in quality. And while I know this seems like a pity party of one over here, it is really my segue into the theme of the new issue. Issue 12 has a Do-It-Yourself theme where we explore the concept of creating spots out of nothing. Just as I am creating a magazine with my own resources, accepting the loss of funds to produce something that brings me joy, skateboarders have been doing this for years. Every spot built by skaters using their own hard earned money has no monetary pay off but brings them joy, as well as netting some happiness for others who get to enjoy using the product of that labor. This issue explores the DIY mentality in skateboarding and its importance.
You can order it here!

SAINTS ALEXANDER (340), JOHN (595) AND PAUL THE NEW (595) CONSTANTINOPLE PATRIARCHS
Tumblr media
Saints Alexander, John and Paul, Patriarchs of Constantinople, lived at different times, but each of them happened to clash with the activities of heretics who sought to distort the teachings of the Church. Saint Alexander (325-340) was a vicar bishop during the time of Saint Metrophanes (June 4), the first Patriarch of Constantinople.
Because of the patriarch’s extreme age, Alexander substituted for him at the First Ecumenical Synod at Nicea (325). Upon his death, Saint Metrophanes left instructions in his will to elect his vicar to the throne of Constantinople. During these times His Holiness Patriarch Alexander had to contend with the Arians and with pagans. Once, in a dispute with a pagan philosopher the saint said to him, “In the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ I command you to be quiet!” and the pagan suddenly became mute. When he gestured with signs to acknowledge his errors and affirm the correctness of the Christian teaching, then his speech returned to him and he believed in Christ together with many other pagan philosophers. The faithful rejoiced at this, glorifying God Who had given such power to His saint.
The heretic Arius was punished through the prayer of Saint Alexander. Arius had apparently agreed to enter into communion with the Orthodox. When the Emperor asked him if he believed as the Fathers of Nicea taught, he placed his hand upon his breast (where he had cunningly concealed beneath his clothes a document with his own false creed written upon it) and said, “This is what I believe!” Saint Constantine (May 21), unaware of the deceitful wickedness of Arius, set a day for receiving him into the Church. All night long Saint Alexander prayed, imploring the Lord not to permit this heretic to be received into communion with the Church.
In the morning, Arius set out triumphantly for the church, surrounded by imperial counselors and soldiers, but divine judgment overtook him. Stopping to take care of a physical necessity, his bowels burst forth and he perished in his own blood and filth, as did Judas (Acts 1:18).
His Holiness Patriarch Alexander, having toiled much, died in the year 340 at the age of 98. Saint Gregory the Theologian (January 25) mentioned him afterwards in an encomium to the people of Constantinople.

Sainted Paul, by birth a Cypriot, became Patriarch of Constantinople (780-784) during the reign of the Iconoclast-emperor Leo IV the Khazar (775-780), and was a virtuous and pious but timid man. According to some ancient manuscripts, Saint Alexander ought to be commemorated on June 2. Today he is remembered together with the holy Patriarchs John the Faster (September 2) and Paul the New (eighth century).
ST FIACRE OF BREUIL ( gaul_670)
Tumblr media
Abbot, born in Ireland about the end of the sixth century; died 18 August, 670. Having been ordained priest, he retired to a hermitage on the banks of the Nore of which the townland Kilfiachra, or Kilfera, County Kilkenny, still preserves the memory. Disciples flocked to him, but, desirous of greater solitude, he left his native land and arrived, in 628, at Meaux, where St. Faro then held episcopal sway. He was generously received by Faro, whose kindly feelings were engaged to the Irish monk for blessings which he and his father's house had received from the Irish missionary Columbanus. Faro granted him out of his own patrimony a site at Brogillum (Breuil) surrounded by forests. Here Fiacre he directed an oratory in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built an hospice in which he received strangers, and a cell in which he himself lived apart. He lived a life of great humility, in prayer, fast, vigil, and the manual labour of the garden. Disciples gathered around him and soon formed a monastery. There is a legend that St. Faro allowed him as much land as he might surround in one day with a furrow; that Fiacre turned up the earth with the point of his crosier, and that an officious woman hastened to tell Faro that he was being beguiled; that Faro coming to the wood recognized that the wonderworker was a man of God and sought his blessing, and that Fiacre henceforth excluded women, on pain of severe bodily infirmity, from the precincts of his monastery. In reality, the exclusion of women was a common rugin the Irish foundations. His fame for miracles was widespread. He cured all manner of diseases by laying on his hands; blindness, polypus, fevers are mentioned, and especially a tumour or fistula since called "le fic de S. Fiacre".
His remains were interred in the church at Breuil, where his sanctity was soon attested by the numerous cures wrought at his tomb. Many churches and oratories have been dedicated to him throughout France. His shrine at Breuil is still a resort for pilgrims with bodily ailments. In 1234 his remains were placed in a shrine by Pierre, Bishop of Meaux, his arm being encased in a separate reliquary. In 1479 the relics of Sts. Fiacre and Kilian were placed in a silver shrine, which was removed in 1568 to the cathedral church at Meaux for safety from the destructive fanaticism of the Calvinists. In 1617 the Bishop of Meaux gave part of the saint's body to the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and in 1637 the shrine was again opened and part of the vertebrae given to Cardinal Richelieu. A mystery play of the fifteenth century celebrates St. Fiacre's life and miracles. St. John of Matha, Louis XIII, and Anne of Austria were among his most famous clients. He is the patron of gardeners. The French cab derives its name from him. The Hôtel de St-Fiacre, in the Rue St-Martin, Paris, in the middle of the seventeenth century first let these coaches on hire. The sign of the inn was an image of the saint, and the coaches in time came to be called by his name.

GALATIANS 2:11-16
11 Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; 12 for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. 13 And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews? 15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, 16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
MARK 6:1-7
1 Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. 2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, "Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us? So they were offended at Him. 4 But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house." 5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching. 7 And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.

A little brainworm I got at work yesterday but: We were playing some random Christmas music("Love" working at a grocery store in Nov/Dec, Xmas music started Nov 5th) and there was some sad Christmas love song about how how could it be Christmas time he didn't have his lover? The song is very eh.
But it got me thinking about how Thrawn must have felt that year or two after he sent Eli to Ar'alani because Eli taught him all the Lesser Space holidays and they must've celebrated them for some 12, 13 years together, sometimes on Coruscant, sometimes with shipmates, probably some Lysatra and Chiss holidays just the two of them. Observed sacred days, laughed over how the ships got over romantic days, exchanged gifts with friends(Admittingly, mostly Eli) and each other one the correct holidays, shared meals with others, made Lysatran food together, got drunk on new year's eve together, attended gala for Empire Days. And suddenly he was alone.
But it was the loneliest kind of lonely. The kind where he had Faro and Pyrondi and Hammerly and the rest of the bridge crew making an effort to do group holidays to fill the gap but it still feels so lonely because Eli taught him all of these traditions. The foods to eat, the things to say, when and who to give gifts to. And so he observes it all, but doesn't celebrate because it doesn't feel like the past years. He quietly celebrates the Lysatran holidays with more care in private. The Chiss holidays feel just as lonely as they did during his exile years. Thrass' death anniversary wrecks him that year.
It's a very lonely year that he tells himself he signed up for and he knew was coming so he tells himself he doesn't get to complain. That doesn't make it easier. For him or the people seeing him suffer.
I may play around with this idea more. idk. Feel free to work with it.

Some of you (who follow me on IG) may know I visited Loro Parque one week ago. You’ll get the actual good images later, because they’re still in my “real” camera (these were taken with my phone). I filmed a lot more than I took photos, though.
It was to the day two weeks after Kohana’s passing, and even though I’ve never been there before, I have followed these whales for over eight years now, and I could still scarcely believe Skyla and Ula were gone, and now Kohana was, as well.
We took the first bus from the south, meaning we got to the park almost two hours after it opened, and ran in as the first whale show was halfway done. Keto and Tekoa were in the show, and so the first thing I saw was Morgan in the back pool. I was so moved by finally seeing her for real, I can’t tell you. The whole experience felt surreal.
The last time I saw killer whales up close was in 2000, when I was a kid and much more interested in dolphins. (Funny thing - that summer in Florida, I also nearly died of boredom when parrots flew overhead at some show. Now, I went to Tenerife explicitly to see killer whales and parrots! XD ) That of course means Tekoa was in his mom’s belly when I visited Orlando, so I’ve “almost” met him before. :p
The day before LP, we had pondered going whale watching, and spoke to a nice British woman down by the beach. She was very enthusiastic about their business, but at the mention of the name “Sea Shepherd” (directly affiliated with them) my own enthusiasm deflated and I left with a “maybe we’ll stop by later”.
Sea Shepherd absolutely does some good things (at least in regards to the vaquita), and it’s not that giving some money to them indirectly is the worst thing (and I appreciate that the whale watching company tried to be as ethical as possible, turning off the engines and letting the whales come to you), but I read on their website and no, sorry, I will not pay to spend two hours being lectured about “the Cove” (didn’t even say “dolphin hunt in Japan”, it seriously said “the Cove”), the Faroe Islands, and how “awful” “captivity” is.
(Sea Shepherd did also go out with an official “warning” or threat a few years ago to every person in the world who visits dolphinariums. They are lunatics.)
There were other whale watching companies but they charged more and the day was getting late and hot, so we ended up not going (had not planned whale watching anyway, but we had a day with nothing to do).
Back to the wednesday at Loro Parque, when we got in for the second show, we were among the first, and sat just above the slideout, as you can see. Before it started, Keto and Morgan were chilling in the show pool and vocalizing, and Keto spyhopped (backwards) by the slideout a lot, apparently trying to get a look at people.
Tekoa is really big and looks like the perfect mix between Tilikum and Kanduke, but Adán is still a little peanut, although with a taller dorsal fin (let’s just say grandpa didn’t look like that at nearly 12).
After the second show was done, Morgan stayed by the glass and watched people leave, in the same spot I’ve seen her before. I was told online that she likes to watch people, and I swear she looked right at me when I got down to say hi and film.

Monday 9 December 1833
1 ¼ pm
11 ¼
terrible night - tremendous window and rain could not sleep for the noise of these and the water dashing against my head and the vessel striking every now and then against the wooden breakwater - the wind still high and rain continued till just before I got up - so late, had no breakfast - washed a little the first time save dipping my hands yesterday - a turn or 2 on deck and then dinner from 2 20 to 3 20 - R.N. lieutenants  and midshipmen know nothing about managing vessels - the master always manages a man of war (i.e. works the ship) - the naval officers are only for frightening - all the steamers lost, were commanded by R.N lieutenants  or midshipman except the Erin (commanded by an East India company’s officer) which founded in the Bristol channel - our captain (Corbin) was on board of her the night before she sailed from the Thames - an E. Indian of 1400 tons had sometime before run against her and struck off 10ft. of her stern which had been temporary repaired for her to go to another voyage before being laid up for thorough repair - probably this temporary work had given away – 510 miles English from Hamburg to London – 64 miles from H- to Cuxhaven – 30 miles from C- to the sea – 600 miles from Harwich (government sailing packets with the mails every Saturday) to Gothenburg – voyage ordinary of 4 or 5 days – longest known in 3 weeks – worst weather often in the spring in April – 20 hours by steam from Gothenburg to Copenhagen – speaking of my liking to go to Iceland, the captain said the Copenhagen vessels were a long time in going – did not care how – best hire an English fishing smack, fishing for cod between there and Newfoundland in winter – accustomed to those seas – but having little to do in May June and July (there no night in Iceland) and he knew of a very nice one, the Sarah Mary, 60 or 70 tons, of Deptford, for £80 or £90 per month crew about 7 men – I should be as safe in  [?] as in my own house – should besides have to provisions to find for myself and servants and perhaps £10 or £12 to lay out in making the cabin comfortable – it might hold 4 or 5 ladies – but I should find myself and servants enough – In this way, for £300, in 3 months might [visit] the Orkneys, Zetland islands, Faroe ditto and sail round Iceland – the smack would come round for me to Hull, and I must allow her for time back to England if I was left anywhere else – Captain John P. Corbin always to be found at the general steam packet office 69 Lombard street London and would be glad to arrange for me about the smack or do anything for me he could – he knows a gentleman Mr. Seebright [Sebright] (son of Sir John Seebright [Sebright]) and now in Sweden whom he has also advised to hire a smack for Iceland instead of going in another way – only 2 steamers since they began to run on this station have put into the Texel because no coals there - we (the Columbine) can carry 75 tons of coal exclusive of cargo - took in 6 tons yesterday - in fine weather burn a ton an hour - in bad weather (because of resistance so great the engines cannot make so many revolutions) ¼ ton an hour (25 cwt. = 1 chaldron) - the Columbine draws 10 ft water - cost £22000 building - about 5pm the Harlequin (Captain Corbin’s elder brother commanded by) came into the roads from London and threw up a blue light to announce her arrival it being almost dark - the steward says the voyage from London here is generally better than from here to London because westerly winds prevail 9 months out of the 12 - walking on deck from 3 ½ to 6 - the deck wet and my shoes wet thro’ - looking at maps and reading a little - tea from 6 ¾ to 7 ¾ for our American gentleman passenger and I talked for the 1st time and the captain seemed more communicative – American money is dollars (=4/. English) and cents i.e. a dollar/100 – our Captain says our P. office must gain a great deal by this last arrangements (since last August) that the Rotterdam and Hamburg mails are conveyed by the steam company’s boats for £13000 a year for letters which used to be 10d. are now 1/8., and the P.O. saves the overland from London to Harwich, the packets at £1000 a year each from Harwich to [Helvoetshirs] and the overland from there to Rotterdam, and the packets from there to here (Cuxhaven) and the overland from here to Hamburg – tho’ now thro’ the interest of the corporation of Harwich there are 6 sinecurists (all Harwich men?) on board there steamers in the persons of 6 mail-guards at £100 a year each who have nothing in the world to do but take care of the mail-bags – nothing to do with the captains nor the captains with them – Before this arrangement the captains were allowed to bring letters, as ship-letters, at 2d. each (much paid then better than they are paid now) and were capable of taking care of these in an open and of perhaps ½ a million of property entrusted to them (for the mails often went without a single letter) but now that the government seal is put on the bags, there must be a man a guard on  purpose to take charge of them – on board the Kings’ packets (from Dover etc.) there is no guard – our captains’ salary is £160 a year and he finds his own provisions – the captains of the government packets have £500 a year – till ten years ago, the Falmouth packets were contracted for from the mercantile interest who built vessels in purpose conveyed the mails for 1/3 of the present expense and there never was an instance of a packet being lost – now that the government has taken this in hand and made it a naval establishment, 4 vessels (16 gun brigs – long vessels for speed, that have gone straight down and foremost) and all hands have been lost – our American has been in all the W. India islands except Jamaica, St. Croix (Santa Cruz, he calls it) the finest – St. Thomas’s likewise belonging to Denmark a free port – passage to America 30 guineas and thence to India £100 – Captain Corbin says we shall get from London to India for £100 after next April when the trade is thrown open – and says one may go in a merchant man from London to Cadiz provisions and everything found for £20 (packet passage from Falmouth £40)
say once a fortnight every voyage of the Columbine to Hamburg and back costs about £300.
crew = 21 at £50 a week wages exclusive of the captains’ £160 per annum
carpenter has 28/. a week and men 21/. a week – find themselves which costs them 5/. a week Don Pedro paid the company £50 a day for the use of each steamer
from 8 to 9 ¼ wrote all the above of today - fair this afternoon and wind abated a good deal this evening - some hope of better weather - F47 ½° now at 9 ¼ in my cool cabin - terribly rainy and stormy till about 1 pm today – our captain went on board the Harlequin – she left English land at five am yesterday – and was here at 5pm today i.e. in 35 hours – very heavy gale last night – saw the Sir Edward Bankes (that left Hamburg last Wednesday and that I was too late for) at 70 miles from England (from Lowestoff) yesterday – the chances are she will reach London – if she has not coal enough must return here or to Heligoland [Helgoland] where the steam co. has also a depot - wrote 13 or 14 lines more to M- (small and close dated tonight) saying we had broke from our moorings and lost our bowsprit on Saturday night (at midnight) etc - raining again now at 10pm till 11 reading the times newspaper of Friday the 6th inst. - do not hear it raining now,  and there does not seem to be very much wind.

Vagrant IX (I think): Stupid Dumb Easy Baby Mode For Weak Little Pissboy Travel-Babies
Hello hello, yes. It's nearly Christmas and I still hate both my own bed and the very concept of possessing money and so, in a brilliant move, have have decided to rid as much of both of those things from my life as possible by going travelling and complaining about it, lots. You're welcome. This time I am going from Edinburgh to Lisbon, then Faro in Portugal, followed by Seville, Grenada and Alicante in Spain (and then a four day stay in Sweden with my friend Jonatan, which I won't be blogging because it would just be four entries dispassionately listing which video game we played, which pizzas we ate and how frequently Jonatan farted).
One thing I have noted in the build up to this trip is that upon telling...basically everyone about the intended route, the stock response that has returned to me has been "ooh, that'll be lovely - I've been to all those places and they are ace". Which sounds great if you're a fan of Lawrence having a nice time, but a bit shit if you're a fan of interesting and challenging journeys which I don't fully enjoy. Nearly all my destinations are those which you may conceivably have been to on a holiday - just wetter; all my bus journeys are - max - five hours long (as opposed to some of the absolutely mental 12 hour overnight, barrier-less mountainous minibus routes I have done in the past) and all come at generally pretty relaxed times throughout the day. Ostensibly, this should be a nice, easy, low pressure trip, in which, I can enjoy nice weather and bibble around some museums at a sedate pace, thoroughly not crippling myself in the process, and for that, I am sorry. Rest assured I will definitely find something to complain about though and it will almost certainly be Ryanair. The gouging pricks.

Moldova Curse Continues for Poland
Tumblr media
The national team of Poland got itself in such a bad situation that it warranted the firing of former head coach Fernando Santos.
When Michal Probierz was hired, he took the job knowing that he would have the difficult task of helping Poland book an automatic qualifying spot to Euro 2024.
In the first match, things went well in a 2-0 victory away from home on 12 October against the Faroe Islands behind goals from Sebastian Szymanski and Adam Buksa.
Tumblr media
But three days later in Warsaw, Poland faced another must-win match and was held to a disappointing 1-1 draw against Moldova.
It is tough to admit but Moldova is one of those teams that knows how to frustrate Poland.
In past qualifying campaigns, Poland was only able to come away with one point when it visited the former Soviet republic.
Yet in this qualifying campaign, the Moldovans easily got the best of Poland on both occasions as the first leg in Chisinau ended in a 3-2 win for Moldova.
Tumblr media
Online bookmaker Bet365 has the latest wagers and currently Poland has 12/1 odds to finish in one of the top two spots in Group E.
As the table stands in Group E, Poland is in third place with ten points and trails Albania and Czech Republic with thirteen and eleven points respectively.
Moldovia is fourth in the table with nine points, but Poland has played one more match than all the other teams in Group E.
Believe it or not, Poland can still qualify automatically. But it won’t be easy because Poland must defeat the Czech Republic on 17 November.
Tumblr media
That is just the beginning because on the same day, Poland will also need Albania to avoid defeat against Moldova in Chisinau.
And Poland will need Moldova and Czech Republic to finish in a draw when the two teams meet in Olomouc on 20 November.
Yes, this is asking for a lot. Yet at the same time, the Poles can maybe find some slight comfort knowing that they may still have a shot at qualifying to Euro 2024 through the playoffs route.

Lessons learned from messaging strangers on the internet This post is based on a talk I gave at the Geek Sessions meet-up in Faro, Portugal 🇵🇹 on the 28th of June, 2023. The full title for this talk was "Lessons learned from messaging strangers on the internet in a language I did not speak" and the idea here is to draw some parallels between the idea of learning new (spoken) languages and learning new skills in technology. Back in June 2020 I was very bored and in lockdown, like most folks, and decided that I needed to learn something in order to keep sane. Being the language nerd that I am I decided I was going to learn Spanish. Since I couldn't just learn the basics and then take a two week holiday somewhere in Spain to practice I needed to decide how I was going to approach it before I could get started. The Plan As I am a native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese I thought this was going to be a quick and easy exercise. Just how I thought the pandemic and the lockdowns would be over before the end of summer or by halloween. Boy was I wrong... So my idea was simple: I'd exchange at least 50 messages a day with a number of people using language learning chatting apps Watch videos in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. Money Heist taught a great Italian song (and some Spanish too!) Start listening to music, and later podcasts, in Spanish Armed with a sound plan and a fool's confidence, I set my target language to Spanish in HelloTalk and got to work! How did it go? As it turns out, knowing Portuguese didn't help nearly as much as I thought it would. Brazilian Portuguese has a much simpler grammatical structure, which meant that whilst I could read messages and take a second to understand which grammar tense was being used, I couldn't really keep up with people's audio messages or Youtube videos and series. Added to that, whilst there's an overlap of about 90% of vocabulary between the two languages, this overlap doesn't help as much as you'd think. Some words have slightly different meanings, have fallen out of fashion in one language or the other, or just sound straight up embarrassing and you didn't even know it. I was always looking words up on either SpanishDict or using Google Translate, DeepL and the apps' builtin translation tools. After about 6 months I was already better at writing and didn't need to rely so much on SpanishDict for verb conjugations of regular verbs and the most common irregulars like ser, estar, ver and a few others. At about the 9 to 12-month mark I started being able to speak a few sentences without having to write them down first. My accent was horrible but at least I was able to alternate between audio and written messages during my practice. Then After about 18 months I started to recall things quicker, expressing myself and having more in-depth conversations with others become much easier. I no longer needed subtitles and became able to listen to audiobooks and podcasts, some even at 1.5 or 2 times the normal playback speed. Around this same time I also started to develop a kind of intuition for verb conjugations I didn't know, and was able to use some of the less common verb conjugations in speech without the need to look them up in a dictionary. Now About three years into this learning journey my language level has oscillated between a good B2 and an acceptable B1. I've had the opportunity to travel to Spain a few times and spend time there with friends speaking mostly Spanish for a number of days in a row each time. After being in a Spanish speaking environment for about a day I am very much back at my best. My accent is still inconsistent, I'll very quickly start mirroring whichever accent is spoken around me and then use expressions and vocabulary that may not be as common or native to where I am, e.g. using Mexican or South American words whilst speaking to a Spanish person. I don't mind this as much as I used to, I would like to have a more consistent accent but I've come a long way and I feel like I have achieved way more than what I had originally set out to achieve. Parallels between skilling up in technology and learning a spoken language Now that I've given some context of my learning journey, let's shift our attention to some of the things I've identified in my process that could also be used to improve our experience when learning new skills in tech. Learning can be a very personal experience and different people will have different ways in which they prefer to acquire new skills, for the purposes of my talk I chose to focus on a few more general points in order to try and make it as useful and relatable to as many people as possible. These are the five points I want to touch on: 1. Identify your goals Before you start you should identify your goals, this will help you with checking in on your progress along the way. These are a few of the questions you can ask yourself to try and understand: What do you want to do with this new skill? How will you know when you've achieved it? How strict are you about those answers? Will there be a next level after you're done with this one? These questions are not comprehensive but should be a great starting point. I find it specially useful to know how flexible I can be with the goal as I progress and how well documented my goal setting needs to be. For professional goals we're usually required to have a more detailed description and be more strict with our definition of done. Personal goals can go from a mental note to a full blown schedule, depending on what it is that you're aiming for. 2. Take small steps Now that you've determined what the end of the journey should look like, let's go back to the start. For almost any skill in technology it pays off to really understand the foundations of what you're learning—you should learn to walk before you try to run. If you're learning a programming language you should focus on the basics of its syntax and peculiarities first, e.g. understand the basics of Rust's ownership system, or Javascript's asynchronous nature. It's also a good idea to start with some tutorials or books that will walk you through these basics and then start to experiment with the simpler examples that you see, exploring things in your own way. If you're trying to learn a new skill that is more role specific, like DevOps, then perhaps you can start with understanding the basics of Docker, Kubernetes and what it takes to deploy a "hello world" style app using such technologies. The main goal at this point is to start small so you can find your pace. Learning shouldn't be overwhelming, nor boring. After the talk we had a small QA session and one of the questions was about how can we know whether we're doing too much or too little when trying to learn. A good analogy I came up with for the case of spoken languages was: if you're dreaming in your target language, you're good, if you start losing sleep over it then it is too much. I don't expect anyone to measure their learning effort of Rust or Haskell by how much they dream about these languages but this is still a good analogy in terms of the levels of exposure to the thing you're trying to learn and how much you should make it a part of your daily life. This takes us to the next point... 3. Practice regularly and immerse yourself in the technology In order to learn a new skill effectively you need to be able to incorporate as much practice as possible into your daily life. In the case of spoken languages this is obvious and easier to define. You should be listening to music, watching videos in the target language and speaking to natives or fluent speakers of that language as much as possible. For technology things can be a little bit trickier. It is unlikely that you'll be able to get a job utilising a skill that you've just started to learn when it comes to tech, in order to counter that you'll have to find other ways to immerse yourself into the tech area you're trying to learn. The most obvious way to get exposure to the thing you're learning is by practising it. Building low stakes projects will be the most effective way to achieve this as you can try different things out without running the risk of having a bigger impact on things around you. Then after that I would recommend listening to podcasts, reading blog posts, books, developer documentation, watching conference talks (online and in-person if possible), joining communities online around the topic that you're trying to learn (more on this later). These are all great options and you should try and mix and match them as and when you can, so long as you incorporate some kind of daily practice on your routine you will see the value in this effort in no time. 4. Embrace your mistakes Mistakes are a very natural part of learning. Regardless of whether we're just getting started or have been practising for a little while, it's obvious that we will make many mistakes along the way. You should learn to be comfortable with your mistakes early on, in order to avoid frustrations. As briefly alluded to in my previous point, having low stakes settings for your practice is one way to help you be more comfortable with making mistakes. Another point that is worth noting is that mistakes can also be used to give us more perspective on what we're learning. Whenever you make a mistake, be it one that makes it so your code doesn't compile or something that someone else is telling you shouldn't be done in that way you can ask yourself why is it that this is not how it should be: Did you break a hard rule by making a syntax error or referencing a variable or file that doesn't exist? Did you not follow best practice and are now running into unexpected behaviour? Did you rely on a feature of the language you're learning that you didn't fully understand and now don't know why it isn't doing what you hoped it would? Mistakes in programming and other aspects of technology can come in different shapes and forms but they're a great way to help us understand what it is that we're lacking in terms of knowledge so that we can work to fill that gap. Another great way to use our mistakes as a positive part of our growth is by having a mentor or community that can help you to keep moving when you're struggling to understand something or to get it to work as intended, this takes us to the last point I want to touch on... 5. The importance of focused communities There will always be other learning or using the same things you're trying to learn, if you can find a good group of people to learn with or at least exchange some of your experiences the synergy it creates can drastically improve your learning journey. Furthermore, by participating in communities you will likely start to meet people that could eventually help you on a professional level too, or that you may be able to help them. I strongly recommend trying to find local communities for this as well, for offline meet-ups and events. These will usually have an online side to them but being able to get together and meet people, join hackathons or other events where you also get to do things alongside others can really help the immersion part of learning. Another, possible less obvious, benefit of being part of more focused communities is that it helps with staying motivated. Very often in our lives things will happen that will force us to set things aside for a short period of time or deprioritise something in favour of a more pressing issue. When this happens, being part of a community and attempting to stay active will serve as a reminder of your learning journey and how you should continue to try and learn as much as your available time allows. Conclusion That's it! I understand that this is by far not a comprehensive list but I hope it helps you when you next try to learn something from scratch or even on your current learning journey. You can find the slides for my original talk in here and the source code for the slides on my Github. Share in the comments below what sort of techniques or tips you keep coming back to when learning and what you are trying to learn now. Me, I'm currently trying to learn more of the Rust programming language, as it's a compiled, lower level, language and I've never really done anything with compiled languages before. https://dev.to/leomeloxp/lessons-learned-from-messaging-strangers-on-the-internet-2m57

Day 7 - to Soesto Beach
The full trek Camino dos Faros is 200 kilometres and is usually done in 8 sections, each taking about 9 hours of walking. That may seem quite a slow pace, but except when the trail is close to towns and villages, the track is quite technical, with considerable up and down.
Tumblr media
I discovered that today in the 5 kilometre section I did. It is however, one of the most spectacular sections, and it was a fine day with excellent visibility.
Tumblr media
There was one other van staying at the old chapel the last two nights, a Spanish couple who I chatted to a few times, from Bilbao. They were, like me, walking certain sections of the route. I actually saw them at lunch parked up at Roncudo Lighthouse, having just walked the exact same section as I had. I had made it into a circuit by going over the hills and through the wind farm slightly inland. This couple were keen hikers, and the only Spanish I saw that weren’t dressed in huge padded coats with gloves and woolly hats. Though it was windy, it was 12-14C for most of the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the afternoon I moved down the coast through the town of Laxe. It’s necessary to be careful, as ever, when using google maps in Spain, especially when their route goes through towns like Laxe. This has typically narrow streets, and certain corners are impossible in the van. A few times I’ve had to reverse back out. But I was wary today. I had thought of staying here, at the lighthouse on the headland, but with it being Sunday, there were just too many people around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I continued south to Soesto, and took the bike out for half an hour, testing my various aches, and fortunately all went well.
Tumblr media
After the France Scotland rugby Roja and I headed up the beach’s small mountain, Petón do Castro, at just 91 metres. But it does dominate the area, begs to be ascended on such a fine day, and delivers, with superb views.

Things to Consider Before Renting a Car
Tumblr media
When renting a car, it's important to consider the price before signing a contract. Rental fees can add up quickly, and you may be surprised by the total cost of a rental. Size also affects price, and different car rental companies have different prices for different car sizes. Compare rates online to find the best rates. You can also compare prices with individual rental companies or price comparison sites.
If you're not sure what to look for in a rental car, start by checking car rent Faroe Islands. Most rental agencies put a hold on credit cards or debit cards to protect themselves from unauthorized charges. This block protects the rental company from any fraudulent charges, and it ensures that you will have sufficient funds to pay the final bill. If you return the rental car on time, the rental agency won't charge the remaining amount unless you prove that you are not at fault.
It is also a good idea to hang onto all paperwork that comes with your rental. Keep the contract and a checklist that looks over the condition of the car upon return. You can use this paperwork if there's a dispute later. Similarly, you can contact the rental agency if you run into trouble while driving.
Before renting a car, think about purchasing collision damage waiver (CDW). If you're going to be driving for a long time, this insurance can protect you from the costs of damages caused by an accident. It will not cover injuries, or damage to your personal property, but it will cover your rental car for a certain amount. Buying a CDW might not be necessary if you're traveling for a long time, but it's a good idea to have it for any unexpected events that may occur.
Another important thing to consider before renting a car is the age of the driver. Some rental companies have different age requirements. Some require drivers to be at least twenty-five years old, while others require drivers to be 21 or older. Make sure you read the fine print and know the laws of your state. Some companies have additional fees if you're under 25, so it's a good idea to check the terms and conditions.
If you're traveling for business purposes, you might want to consider getting rental car from leje bil Færøerne. Your standard auto insurance policy may cover it, but it's a good idea to check whether your credit card will cover the cost. You should also be aware that some insurers offer car insurance for only a day or two, so make sure you choose wisely.
If you want to avoid paying high prices, you should try car-sharing companies. These companies offer inexpensive car rentals in cities like New York. Mint and ZipCar are two examples of companies that offer these services. ZipCar's prices start at $12 per hour, which is very affordable even during rush hours. For more details about the topic above, visit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_rental.

Tips to Rent a Car When Traveling
Tumblr media
If you are traveling, renting a car is a great idea. However, if you are not familiar with car rental, here are some useful tips. A car rental company will help you get around without getting lost! It is also known as hiring a car. Rental companies let you use their automobiles for a specified period of time, which can range from several hours to several weeks. These tips will help you get the best car rental service at the most affordable price.
Before renting a car, you need to know about the local rules. You should obey all parking regulations, including the day and time to park your car. While these rules are posted clearly, you should double check your parking restrictions before driving away. Otherwise, you may get a ticket! It is a good idea to have the necessary paperwork when you lej bil Færøerne so that you do not get into any trouble. If you have a problem with parking, you can pay for it later.
You should also know about discounts and coupons. For instance, you can use discount codes to get a car for less. Discount codes can save you as much as 10%. Many rental car companies have special offers to make their services more affordable. These codes can save you time and money. You can also use discount codes and memberships in various clubs or associations to get more discounts and savings. So, the next time you travel, make sure to rent a car.
Depending on where you are traveling, age requirements will vary. If you are traveling to the US, make sure you are at least twenty-five years of age. The minimum rental age varies by location, but most reputable car rental companies require drivers to be over twenty-five years old. If you are under 25, you might face a surcharge. But this amount can be as high as $3 per day. You can also avoid any unnecessary fees by making sure you are a licensed driver. Learn how you can rent a car Faroe Islands from the best company here.
Depending on the type of rental you are looking for, you should also check out Turo. It is like Airbnb for cars, allowing individual car owners to list their vehicles on the platform. This will help you choose a rental that will meet your needs and fit your budget. The car rental company will track the prices of the cars and let you know what you can expect. A car rental company can also be helpful for people who are new to the city or have never been there before.
To see the city from the outside, consider renting a luxury car with a convertible roof. Alternatively, you can drive north of the city through Route 22 to Bedford, NY. For larger groups, you can rent a passenger van that seats up to 12 or fifteen people. This option will help you get everyone to your destination and stay together during events. In addition to renting a luxury car, you can also rent a passenger van that seats up to 15 people. If you probably want to get more enlightened on this topic, then click on this related post: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_rental.
