#fathers; reflections by daughters

Text
Shakespeare and Wagner seem to recognise the situation and faithfully portray the rage of the all-powerful fathers when they find they have raised not a woman but a rival. The "faults" of Cordelia and Brunhilde were acts performed in the spirit of the father's own professed values, in the name of pleasing or obeying him. The punishment they suffer is because they have understood their fathers too well, not too little, and have competed with him on his own terrain. If Cordelia and Briinnhilde are thought unsatisfactory as dramatic heroines, it is because they mirror the obstinacy of the kings who sired them.

[clearly insane] so do we want to talk about how starting in the bridge episode, Eskew continually produces daughters and little girls for David to see himself in, ultimately culminating in Lucia. Are we going to talk about the Gender in the fact he sees his struggles and fragile, breakable self mirrored in bugs and little girls.

I have a rich inner world abt both iterations of Miguel and the relationship to fatherhood <- literally just hc
#90s miguel would explode on the spot if he spontaneously became a father shdjdjfjfjf he’s barely grappling through the emotional arc of#trying to become a better man AND he has the most hang ups ever regarding parents in general.#BUT. but. his biggest issue w being a dad would honestly be his own tendency towards self sabotage AND the fact Miguel is like. desperately#scared he’s bound to his own blood. he’d honestly probably fuck up being a dad not because he lacks the capability to be a kind man (all of#2099 demonstrates he DOES have the ability and desire to change) but because#he’d be scared he’d intrinsically fuck it up and in that fear. actually fuck it up. and then see those mistakes as further proof he just#isn’t capable of this.#not to mention like. given just how complicated his relationship with his family is I don’t think fatherhood would EVER have been something#90s miguel would’ve even THOUGHT of. he’s too busy been terrified he’ll turn into his OWN father(s)#atsv miguel on the other hand. difficult to draw too many concrete strands of analysis from because we don’t know how his past will be#conceptualised. BUT I personally like to think he’s very similar to the 90s counterpart except he sees a version of himself as a father.#and he sees that version of himself be HAPPY as a father. be a *good* father. someone who raised a sweet daughter. who lives with definitive#proof that you aren’t bound to enact pain upon your children. that you CAN be a better parent than the ones you had.#I think THAT would shake Miguel. and I like to think atsv Miguel didn’t know he wanted to be a dad - didn’t even THINK of it - until he saw#a reflection of himself that said this was possible. that you can go on and have a family of your own and you can choose to make it a good#and loving thing.#ANYWAYS. ✌️ she came. she posted a huge Miguel rant. she left ✌️#tunes talks spiderverse#tunes talks 2099

Obviously I have no idea where Tom Taylor will be going with his Dark Knights of Steel elseworld, but the first book pushes the idea that Bruce, despite being a bastard (he's the illegitimate son of late Queen Martha and Jor-El in this) should inherit the throne one day since he's the only one related to the original monarchs of the kingdom, and I can't help but imagine Bruce sitting one the throne one day and he swears to himself to only sire "trueborn children" so no biologically related child of his would ever suffer from growing up as a bastard like he did...and then Damian is introduced to him.

I'm my father's daughter, quick to anger, easily enraged by trival difficulties, yet exercising great patience and kindness when facing a destructive ordeal.
I'm my father's daughter, nimble and silent, minding my own thoughts, unbothered by the assumptions made beyond my own space.
I'm my father's daughter, quick to forgive and give second chances, ready for reconciliation.
I'm my father's daughter, wordlessly expressing care and concern and ensuring my actions don't hinder others.
I'm my father's daughter, a reflection of who he could've been had he been given more care and attention.
I'm my father's daughter, and I am an existence he is proud of even if he doesn't express it outloud.

okay so this is long overdue ~ here are some thoughts i have about dae.mon as a dad. this is going to be long.
tldr ; i'm open to multiple interpretations of dae.mon's relationship with the twins. i think it is key to giving the twins' depth that i believe the show majorly lacked. however, i will be defaulting to a place that is a mix of show and book ; rhaena feels her relationship is complicated with her father, but feels deeply understood by her mother who was the first loss she experienced. while baela has an internal struggle of being ' her father's daughter ' whether that is true or not, it does not matter. she hears it so often that it will have a deep affect on her, meanwhile in reality, she is more so her mother's daughter than anything else equally feeling the loss of her.
im about to get nerdy real quick and this will go full on and not stop so if you read it <3 ur a real one. it's all very nuanced - as it should be bc he's a grey character and i don't believe it's so black and white ! bc that's boring.
if we do go by book canon. he's really not the best father to the twins. they barely interact and maybe that's because laena dies when they are so young in the book, he remarries quickly, they are sort of pushed to the side ( especially rhaena. ) also there has to be something to say about how baela ends up naming her child after her mother who she barely knew in the book, and not her father, who she would have known more, since he lived longer. so, there's that. ( says a lot about what she thinks of him, since she's naming her child after a mother who passed when she was so young and completely ignoring the relationship she might have or have not had with daemon. ) this would be interesting to write out ... baela i think would harbor a lot of ill will towards daemon. for just lacking as a parent, especially to her twin who she cherishes more than anything. also consider, everyone blatantly claims she is her father's daughter, that they are so alike. she might not feel this way at all, but hearing it all the time ? thinking what is she doing wrong that she's nothing like him ? i think it would be interesting to explore that .. how she is perceived vs how she really feels. im obsessed w themes of identity vs perception you’ll always see that on my blogs no matter what gsifjief
this is less emphasized in the show because in episode 6 they are much older, and they get time in pentos with the both of them. and i think although the show wanted you to truly believe daemon was a bad father, they did a good job of it / and also not really ? like lmao.. hm. their first mistake was to have the twins be so much older when laena passes. because what were daemon and laena doing all those years but being parents to the twins ? it's not so .. easy to really say, in my mind ... they gave us a bit of interactions of him with the twins, that you kind of feel this sense of hope that maybe he is good to them. or he has the potential to be good to them. sorry but no one can take him teaching baela valyrian away from me .. i dont care. i don't think that's out of character for him. but then obviously that final scene you see kind of the truth of it. he of course is coping in his way, but cannot spare some comfort for his daughters. ( ... but then they released that cut scene where he comforts them ! so you also feel that hope again ! ) plus there's years between things now, they get much more time with their mother, forming a much closer bond, and this appeals to me deeply. obviously because i really think that the death of their mother was that first loss the girls could never truly get over. they felt so entirely understood by her. and that grief essentially has them beyond repair. they can never fully get over something like that. plus you have to consider the conversations that went on in that episode. baela with daemon. rhaena with her mother. rhaena talking to her mother about her insecurities with being dragonless, her mother comforting her. rhaena's " father ignores me. " so ... it all has the potential to weave into something so complicated and compelling.
both of these takes are interesting in their own right. and of course there is also the girl!dad take, which is sweet and ... i do not think it is entirely baseless - especially from the little bits that the show gave us. and i would like to entertain this idea as well. why not ? bc why make a grey character if you're going to take the grey aspect away ...
