2 days in Denmark

6/28 -Michael Karpon walk 8AM - was a Rickrec. it was slightly gimmicky but interesting. It was not a hard history tour, but did give insight into modern Danish culture with a sprinkling of HCA. I arranged to tour Rosenborg with him on Thursday which changed my plans. After that I wandered and grabbed another durum (ate half) and planned day. 

Walked north to Amalienborg , the royal mansions. A square of 4 royal mansions 3 of which are actively inhabited by the royal family. The tour takes you through one mansion with about 6 rooms reconstructed and preserved in the state at which the royal died. The royal jewelry is completely on display with pieces that are being used by the Queen marked in their place. The whole kabinett is oddly homey - hyggelig - The concept of coziness is crucial and interesting to the Danes. They live in a post-consumer, welfare state, so creating a homey, cozy space to inhabit is a cultural virtue. Its a concept similar to the xenia but closer to fellowship and wellbeing than to hospitality. It makes all the sense then that Danish design and furniture is so thoughtful.  Then stopped at Kastellet, a small super-local upscale spot where two families were happily chatting away over their herring and champagne..where I got my first smorrebrod, small toasts with herring, seafood, or meat. Pan fried herring with tarragon mustard, dill, capers, pickled onions and horseradish and a stirred beef tartare with horseradish, egg, and small fried potato slivers. The bread platform is super dense, and I think butter toasted. They recommend eating with beer and schnapps. It was good. Not life changing. Arguably a Durum is more delicious, in a gutter sort of way. 

Then the danish resistance museum- an interesting AV narrative museum where you follow the story of 4 real people who lived through the Nazi occupation, a wife/mother, a med student-turned resistance fighter, a Danish Nazi, and a Danish Jew.  From there, I walked south to Nyhavn - the colorful classic Copenhagen wharf, then around to the center of power, the Berser (stock exchange) and Christiansborg (the Capital), and then  to the small-but-engaging modern, Copenhagen art collection housed in a tower attached to a church.

Very interesting how the worldly and secular are deliberately linked - physically linked to Christian concepts. A modern art museum inside an active 16th century kirke. The horizon brought me then to Christianshavn and the tower. A massive spiral church structure on the island of Christianhavn that affords panoramic views of, well, everything, including the skyline of Malmo - then back to Nyhavn and my hostel. 

For dinner I trecked back to the anarchy of Christiania for a delicious cut of venison and a house brewed mead. After, I made my way to the more colorful areas until I was ready to walk back to hostel.  Christiania is a cross between L5P, Amsterdam, a Montessori school, and Planet X. I watched the local fauna engage in a cat and mouse game revolving around selling hash to well healed or rough shod locals and avoiding the police, who clearly announce their whereabouts, while everyone scatters. It's an elaborate farce but a harmless one. Every single person I met was kind, interested, and happily bedraggled.

6/29 - I moved my outing day forward to take advantage of a guided tour through Rosenborg w Karpen. SO after deliberation, I decided to loop Fredericksborg (the 17th century palace) and Kronborg (the Medieval fortified castle).  Fburg was  fascinating but overwhelming and lacked a coherent narrative to engage the mind, altho it did impart a true sense of 16th century splendor.  Completely famished by 12:30, not having had a repast of any sort, I found a small kababeria/pizzaria where they were making the dough fresh and then baking it immediately before wrapping the durum. It was insanely good - home cooked - delicious. I ate it in the square with a Tuborg then caught on bus toAfter, to Helsingor to see Kronborg - of Hamlet fame. Kronborg felt truly Nordic and the "casements" *read* oubliettes were evocatively dank and immiserating. Finally, I trained to Louisiana Museet - which was HO HUM. Beautiful place, but the first time Rick REALLY oversold a spot - not worth the treck at all. It was a sleepy hike through a Morningside neighborhood with nice, little, verdurous parks and thoughtfully installed sculptures. It was lovely. The Museet was pleasant but unremarkable.  

Thoughts: smorrebrod is overrated, Doner/Durum is underrated. The Danes are the only foreign people I have felt an affinity with. They behave and react and seem to view the world the way I do. This is not to say that I do not like or identify with folks of other nationalities. When I’m in Ireland, or Italy, or Britain, I feel like a foreigner. Here I really feel very similar to the people. The Jokes are easier, the humor hits, the conversations are more natural. It’s odd and interesting.  Back to Hostel and on to Kadeau.  Enterring Kadeau I was greeted before on the sidewalk and was lead to a sitting room. Attended like a science-fictional Barron. The meal was interesting varied and worth it.

Fburg Nov USPSA: 2nd & 3rd place on Stages 4 & 6 in my division, despite a bad reload on the classifier and 2 makeups on steel on the field course. A total meltdown on Stage 5 obliterated my finish. The ground was muddy and I was not happy with my performance, but I had fun with the gents on setup squad 92. Cheers, boys!
