Vivien Leigh as Cynthia in Fire Over England (1937). It is the first film where Vivian Leigh and Laurence Olivier appear together, and Leigh's performance convinced David Selznick to cast her as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind (1939).

FIRE OVER ENGLAND
1937
Fire Over England is a historic film directed by William K. Howard and written by Clemence Dane, based on the novel by AEW Mason (1936). The film is set during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I during English victory over the Spanish Armada.
The film stars Flora Robson as Queen Elizabeth I, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, and James Mason. This was the first time Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh appeared together on screen (they were a couple in real life). Leigh’s performance in this film helped convince David O. Selznick to cast her as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939).
The original title of the film was ‘Glorianna’, and was filmed at Denham Studios in England. They used a large water tank to film the Spanish Armada scene using model ships.
This was the first British film to premier in Los Angeles, the film gained positive reviews initially, however the film lacked historical accuracy. Today the film doesn’t rate as well with modern audiences this could be largely due to it being historical fiction as well as using many characters that didn’t exist in real life.

A Season of James Mason
The Seventh Veil (1945)
Is it saying anything that James Mason would have to wait 8 years to land the role that made him a bankable star?  Oh he was in plenty of movies - even a couple that sounded worth watching i.e. I Met A Murderer or even A Place of One’s Own.  I watched one of James’ early films, Fire Over England from 1937.  James was only in the movie for a couple of scenes and he wasn’t very good in those.  One of the scenes he yells the astoundingly original line, ‘You’ll never take me alive!’.  Classic.  I didn’t want to start the Season of James Mason with a bad review so I kept moving through his repertoire until I found a film that was available to watch and had the potential for a good performance.
The Seventh Veil brought James into the public consciousness as a handsome and wicked villain.
Tumblr media
In the film, a doctor recommends narco hypnotherapy as a way to cure a mute mental patient.  The doctor explains the seven veils - Veils of reserve, shyness, fear - the human mind is like Salome with the seven veils - you can drop 5 or 6 veils for a lover - but ONLY this treatment will permit someone to drop the seventh veil.
Miss Cunningham (Ann Todd) is the mute mental patient.  She looks lovely although she has recently attempted suicide and the film needs a restoration  - there are vertical squiggly lines right through.  The narrative takes us through a flashback to Miss Cunningham getting caned before she is to perform.  The scene was so ridiculous it made me angry.  She’s supposed to be getting caned - her hands are supposed to be being beaten with a cane - and her facial expression does not change.  Still she misses her music scholarship and is sent to live with her non-uncle.
Non-uncle Nicholas (James Mason) is sitting there with his cat.  He declares his bachelor pad and she promises to be quiet.  ‘Would you like to stroke him?’ Mason asks Miss Cunningham (about the cat) ‘No’, she says - she hates cats.
He is not particularly wicked and doesn’t really do anything bad for a while.  He makes sure Miss Cunningham gets famous.  He keeps her from being with a man she thinks she loves.  The movie continues to follow the wooden Ann Todd for a while.  Until Miss Cunningham falls in love again and tells Nicholas (Mason).
Non-uncle Nicholas gets hysterical and beats the piano keys with his cane - that was real hitting - not the caning we saw earlier with no reaction.  Ann Todd jumped.  Piano keys banged.  James Mason grimaced as he beat his cane near her hands on the piano.  It was a shock especially since the film had heretofore been droll.
But that scene - that piano scene.  That’s where we see some life in the old boy.
Tumblr media
The rest of the movie continues in its ridiculousness - ending with the mental patient being cured and staying with her guardian, James Mason.  Really dumb stuff.
Despite The Seventh Veil’s less-than-ordinary qualities this film set James on a path of playing villains.  British movie-goers loved him in that role.
Some twerks to know about James Mason.  First, he hated the British film industry and frequently published essays about their ineptness and substandard contribution to cinema.  Second, he was a pacifist and refused to fight in WWII.  His waiver was not granted, however, and he ended up having to serve in a clerical capacity after a hearing and what-not.
So he was available to work during WWII when there were not a lot of leading men available - but no one liked him or wanted to work with him.  He had himself in a pickle.
I’ll be blogging about James all season.  You’ll have to stay tuned to find out if he ever gets himself quite un-pickled.

The more I learn about Civil War politics, the more I'm convinced that Lincoln's most impressive and useful leadership trait was that he never let his pride get in the way of doing his job.
Other people in Lincoln's position would have come to Washington with something to prove. They'd have resented the insults and tried to disprove them. They'd have tried to seize power and credit, rejected help, spent a lot of time trying to reach a certain level of respect.
Lincoln's response to, "You're just a backwoods lawyer with no executive experience who makes too many dumb jokes," was pretty much always, "Yeah. And?" He had no interest in petty personal power plays. He had a country to run. There was a war on. It didn't matter what people thought of him so long as the job got done.
He was aware of his personal shortcomings and was always willing to accept advice and help from people who had more knowledge and experience in certain areas. He presided over a chaotic Cabinet full of abrasive personalities who thought they were better and smarter than him, but he kept working with them because they could get the job done. For example: Stanton was absolutely horrible to him when they were both working as lawyers. Just incredibly mean on a personal level. But when Lincoln needed someone to replace Cameron, he swallowed his pride and appointed Stanton as Secretary of War, where Stanton proceeded to be mean to everyone in the world, but he whipped that department into shape and kept it running efficiently through a very chaotic war. Pretty much no one except Lincoln would have been able to put up with that. He could put up with people who were personally difficult if they could do the job he needed them to do--which he was only able to do because his own ego didn't get in the way.
Lincoln's example is a prime demonstration of how humility isn't underrating yourself--it's being so secure in your own abilities and identity that you don't need to attack anyone or defend yourself to prove your worth. He knew his shortcomings, but he also knew his strengths. He was willing to give other people credit for successes and take blame upon himself for failures if it kept things running smoothly. He was secure enough in his own power that he could deal generously--but firmly--with people who tried to undermine him. In a city full of huge egos, in a profession that rewards puffed-up pride, that levelheaded humility is an extremely rare trait--which is what made it so impressive and effective.
#history is awesome#presidential talk#so i went to a teeny backwater thrift store today#their tiny history book section just happened to have an old lincoln biography#i opened to the page about the cabinet#which describes the situation like 'seward was calling himself premier and lording it over everyone'#'blair was causing problems everywhere'#'welles was insulting everyone in his diary and especially hated stanton grant and seward'#'and stanton hated absolutely everyone in the whole wide world'#and as i was reading this i was internally kicking my legs with excitement and cackling with glee because this is the good stuff#i don't know why but i love these horrible petty men#they're like a bunch of raccoons fighting over territory in a dumpster fire it's so great#i read the whole chapter right there in the store#and it impressed upon me yet again how impressive lincoln was to put up with all these guys#(the writer was a bit simplistic and made a lot of these guys come off as worse than they were)#(like he made seward sound like a complete incompetent when he was a pretty good secretary of state)#(he had some grandiose ideas but the man deserves a lot of credit for keeping england out of the war)#(but for a one-chapter summary of these guys it wasn't exactly wrong and it was a ton of fun)#i very much did not want another book especially another american history book#but it was only fifty cents and i have a pouch full of spare change#and the writer's style was so much fun that i decided to take the book with me#i don't plan to read the whole thing (i'm sick of lincoln bios) but it's fun to dip into for things like this#and i had to talk to you about it

i think my biggest gripe with the comparison between zuko and john smith and zutara as a whole to pocahontas is that john smith was an active colonizer. he was a grown man who chose and was proud of what he was doing. he didnt even believe the act of colonization was wrong. yes, he tried to end the violence in the movie, but he still lived with the belief that his people deserved to and were entitled to co exist on that land with the indigenous people.
zuko was an active participant in dismantling a hundred years of colonialism and colonization and genuinely wanted to fix the problems that his ancestors had left for him. it wasn’t easy and he wasn’t a perfect leader, but he was genuinely trying to make decisions that would be for the better of all the people, not just himself or his people. where john smith thought that indigenous ppl needed the white people’s help to become “more civilized” because he viewed them as inferior, zuko sought to give those that the fire nation had hurt their autonomy back.
that’s not to say that it isn’t a valid reason to dislike zutara, and if the idea makes you uncomfortable that’s fine and i respect it. i realize that the ship doesn’t appeal to everyone and that’s okay, but i just hate the comparisons because john smith was genuinely just an awful person who never should’ve been glorified in a disney movie.

currently the house of mystery is only canon in his JLD verse but i gotta say, the symbolism of giving john constantine ownership of the house of cain, with all his family hang-ups? chef's fucking kiss for that one.
i do like to think that he ends up owning the house of mystery eventually in the main verse, because it would be an eventual solution to his endlessly unstable housing situation and i think he'd breathe a lot easier if he had a sanctum of a sort, but it definitely takes a while to come into his hands. post-hellblazer, pre-sandman universe presents in timeline speak. the man is 70, he deserves some interdimensional storage space and a reliable ("reliable") place to sleep.

the thing is that in JP video games that depict tea ceramics it's never just about representing Japan, it's also about representing Europe (whatever that actually means in either case), but it's more obviously an act of total imagination (arguably because concessions have to be made for media constraints, or nationalistic purposes) and it's so fascinating. and then you have an american play it and go tea=england for two hours. i am putting this situation in a microscope.

Anyways so I went to a staff meeting at work today because we all had to go, and we all found out that our work place is shutting down. We do have the chance to keep working at bk, but if we want to, we have to move to another city entirely or take the bus or train every single day for hours at a time. Now I dont know about you but I wouldnt move away from all my friends and family to work at a shitty fast food resturant, and I am currently looking for new jobs. Wish me luck. Life just keeps getting weirder and more shitty before it lets me have any sort of break i suppose
#ramblings#how the fuck did it take three years to realize the resturant that hasnt been successful since a month after it opened wouldnt be fixable#im not even mad i just dont get how you can look at a resturant going in the negatives every single month for over a year and has zero (0)#god damn visitors most of the day every single day and still think that you can fix it for three whole years#the resturant has never been successful why would they think they can turn it around after even like a full year of consistent it losing#money for even being open#also choosing to close the resturant during extremely shitty economic times is a choice.#wont affect a big corporation like bk but it will definitely affect the people working there#especially the people working there who DONT live with family or any roommates or anything like that#I thought it was hilarious that several of the people i told to guess what we found out at the staff meeting thought that i had been fired#like yeah. TECHNICALLY THAT HAPPENED. we all practically got fired. because unless we have the money to travel between work and home for#hours on end or we dont want to uproot pur entire lives and move in like a months time then yeah. we wont be able to keep the job lol#at least i can take some comfort in knowing that a majority of the people working there are under 18 and live with family so they wont be#dropped as hard as the older people who live on their own will be (like me lmao)#anyways if someone can either ship me off to england so i can live with my partner or idk find some place that could hire me that would be#nice. im just job hunting now and i will definitely go harder at it now lol#just all i ask for is one singular break for once life... im tired and stressed and in general have been kinda kicked around for a year#just one little break. please
