Translation: Gekirock Magazine Dec 2022 (Kai, Uruha)
the GazettE: the band's potential in a flawless expression. 20th anniversary best-of album drop.
Time flies, and in the course of 20 years, the GazettE has gone through a lot of changes. Their new release, 20TH ANNIVERSARY BEST ALBUM HETERODOXY -DIVIDED CONCEPTS-, is a “best-of” album categorized by three concepts: "SINGLES", "ABYSS" and "LUCY". The band is also taking the opportunity to confront their past albums during [the GazettE LIVE TOUR2022-MASS/PHASE 02 "The Unknown"], which will continue until December 21st. Here, we will ask a few questions to Uruha and Kai, the guitarist and drummer of the GazettE, about the circumstances behind revisiting and bringing the band’s past together.
Tumblr media
ー the GazettE is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary in the midst of the Japan tour MASS / PHASE 02, where in addition to the songs from the latest album MASS (2021 release), past songs are also performed at various venues. Uruha-san, Kai-san, how do you feel about performing at all those shows so far?
KAI: Rather than saying that the reason why the contents of this tour are a close look into our past is because this year is our 20th anniversary, it’d say it’s because MASS is our 10th album, and we’ve been playing shows in different places to combine it with our past works. It’s also because we have not done a tour with a concept like this before, to tell the truth, and it started with us thinking: “Well, this will be interesting!”. Since some of the songs from past albums will be performed live for the first time in forever, it’s also true that the performance aspect was more difficult than I had expected (laughs). However, when we actually tried it, the results were pretty good! We found the differences in the set lists each time very interesting and enjoyed every single live so far.
URUHA: Each album naturally has a different “color”, so when we combine our newest album with songs from our older albums in one show, it’s very important for us to highlight these different “colors”. That being said, the number of albums we’ve released so far is quite big. Realistically, it would be difficult to play every single song in our discography, so we generally play about five songs for each concept. And yet, by playing those five songs at each live show, we’ve been able to create an atmosphere and space on the tour that we haven’t had before. I think there’s a great synergy between the songs on MASS and the songs from each of our past albums.
ー By the way, why did you decide that you will be choosing exactly 5 songs for each live performance?
KAI: When we were discussing this with the members, someone suggested that we exclude the songs that we already had on MASS / PHASE 01. And we also thought we should play songs that express the essence of each album more vibrantly than others.
URUHA: In terms of the melody, we also decided to avoid choosing only those songs where singing is emphasized over the instrumental part, and we tried to balance each block of the set list.
ー In the midst of all this, HETERODOXY will be released to commemorate the band's 20th anniversary, and as you can tell from the title, it is a voluminous three-piece product. It seems that “3 CONCEPTS” means that the songs are categorized as “SINGLES”, “ABYSS”, and “LUCY” and are divided into 3 discs. How did you come up with such a compilation that condenses 20 years of the band in this best-of album?
KAI: I think the fact that best-of albums naturally start with singles is definitely not unusual. But in our case, this alone would not exactly strike home. Doesn’t “best” for the GazettE mean showing all our colors in various forms? With that in mind, we decided to divide the songs into three separate discs: "SINGLES", "ABYSS" and "LUCY". "ABYSS" and "LUCY" in particular have a very familiar ring to them and give you a taste of our two extremes.
URUHA: Right, because for the GazettE, "ABYSS" and "LUCY" mean the duality that has been our definite part since forever.
ー Looking back, in 2011, there was a FC-only 2-day live "LIVE TOUR 2011 TWO CONCEPT NIGHTS ABYSS/LUCY ~Two different faces, decadence and instinct, two polar nights~" and in 2017, Halloween shows called "HALLOWEEN NIGHT 17 THE DARK HORROR SHOW SPOOKY BOX 2 ABYSS-LUCY". So, probably the fact that the keywords "ABYSS" and "LUCY" express stillness and movement is already well known to the GazettE’s fans.
URUHA: In terms of sound differences, generally "ABYSS" is centered on the dark worldview that the GazettE creates, while "LUCY" is more aggressive. Both sides are the essential components of the GazettE, and we wanted to convey that in our best-of album.
ー So HETERODOXY is a flawless selection of songs that combines the catchiness and pop sensibility of the singles with the darkness and intensity at the heart of the GazettE.
URUHA: Yes, exactly (laughs).
KAI: I guess you could say that it is as "flawless" as it can get (laughs).
"If I didn’t have a strong mentality, it wouldn’t be surprising if I shattered over and over again"
ー The hardest thing must have been choosing entries for "ABYSS" and "LUCY".
URUHA: We had an online meeting with the members about that. We put the songs on a spreadsheet and discussed it like “ahh, right, mmm, maybe this”. I think it felt close to how we decide on a live set list.
KAI: At that time, when we listened to some songs again, we thought, “Is it really so that an intense song = a “LUCY” song?”. Even for “ABYSS”, it doesn’t necessarily mean that if a song is a ballad it’ll be included there. For some of them, there were specific comments such as, “Isn't it too beautiful a song to be included in "ABYSS"?". So the entries for this best-of album were selected not only by their melody, but also by considering the deeper meaning and characteristics of each song.
ー It seems that this best-of album project also involves remastering, so considering that different ages of production had to be put into a single album according to its concept, was there anything that you had to order the band to do?
URUHA: What we mainly focused on was the length of time. This time we were not looking for any particular change in sound quality, and we only made some adjustments to the sound level when all the songs were laid out on each disc, based on our current sensibilities. We didn’t consciously change the songs just because they’re old.
KAI: This time probably all the members were thinking in the same way, and I didn’t really have to say anything. We simply adjusted the acoustic pressure so that no piece feels out of place when you listen to the disc.
ー So when you listened to HETERODOXY after the remastering, did you notice anything that made you realize that you have grown or changed?
URUHA: Huh, did I... When we’re playing songs from the past on the current tour, I feel that how I’m producing the sound is different between now and the past, so there’s no doubt that the quality in all aspects is now better than it was. Of course, that was the best we could do back then, but I can feel the change.
KAI: When I listen to it, I also feel “Oh, this kind of phrase was very characteristic of me at that time,” or “Oh, so this is the kind of sound I used to make at that time”. In the end, I have always aimed to surpass my past self, and when I look back on my work, I can clearly see that trajectory in the sound.
URUHA: It depends on the song, but I feel that the guitars used to be more clunky in the past (laughs). As time goes by, I definitely feel that the band is becoming more harmonious in terms of sound!
KAI: Really, in our early days, we didn’t even do any pre-production before recording. Back then, I often didn't know what the other members were going to play when we were recording the drums (laughs). I think the biggest change was that from a certain point on, I learned how to properly grasp the composer's intentions while also understanding what everyone else was doing and coming up with my own sound.
URUHA: Even though we have our own ideas about what we want to do, the GazettE’s current style is to produce sound while complexly looking at the whole picture from the listener’s perspective of how cohesive we are as a band. I think over the past 20 years the GazettE has gradually learned that sometimes it’s important to cut out unnecessary things.
ー To put it simply, even just comparing DIM (2009 release), which had a particularly dense sound, and your latest release, MASS, you can tell that the sound is very different, right?
URUHA: If we go further back to NIL (2006 release) or STACKED RUBBISH (2007 release), in retrospect it feels that the combination between guitars is “hard to see”. Solos and other interactions are fine, but I feel that there were unexpectedly many small places on the underside where we conflicted.
ー Can I now ask Kai-san, as the drummer of the GazettE, what is your greatest weapon at the moment?
KAI: It’s difficult to explain in words, but first and foremost, it’s the fact that I’m in a position to create a sense of dynamics in the band's sound. I think this is the role I was meant to take on. Our basic style right now is that the melody, lyrics, and the so-called emotional parts of a song are left to other parts of the band, and I’m in the background supporting them and bringing out the dynamics.
ー Uruha-san, same question for you. What is your greatest weapon as a guitarist of the GazettE?
URUHA: It’s satisfying that the more I pursue the way I use physical equipment, the playing method and technique, the more interesting they become and the more my skill grows, but I feel like it’s not the most important thing here. What I personally want to polish is my sensitivity, and I think it would be ideal if I could use that as a weapon.
ー So it seems that the members have been diligently working on themselves over the past 20 years. If there was anything you have been able to "obtain" in these 20 years, what is it? I am sure the list of those things is long, but I would like you to focus on just one.
URUHA: A strong mentality, I think. It’s something I’ve been able to obtain only because I’ve been in a band for 20 years. If I didn’t have it, it wouldn’t be surprising if I shattered over and over again (laughs). There were a lot of times when I refused to give up.
KAI: To be honest, I’m glad that we became a band where the members are able to discuss things properly with each other. If we didn’t, I think we would have disbanded by now. Discussing solutions to problems is one thing, but in our case, even when something generally bad happens, the five of us complain to each other (laughs). So I think our strength lies in being able to share and confront things together.
ー Were there times when you sublimed the frustration by turning it into a song?
KAI: There definitely were. That's what I call having a strong emotional strength (laughs).
URUHA: In a way, that’s because we are a rock band. Like, if something pisses you off, you turn it into sound. I think that has always been in the foundation of the GazettE.
ー Ah, the fact that HETERODOXY is now being released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the GazettE makes me deeply emotional.
KAI: When you listen to our best songs, I think you can cover the GazettE's past and present at a glance.
URUHA: This is without a doubt a package that will show different people what kind of band the GazettE has come to be over the past 20 years.
ー I can understand that! Finally, please tell us about the GazettE's vision for the year 2023 and the future.
KAI: With the release of our 10th album, MASS, and the band’s 20th anniversary, we have reached a lot of milestones recently. Even though there have been some irregularities because of corona, I think that from 2023 on there won’t be any more special topics in various aspects. For the GazettE, 2023 is the year when we’ll return to our usual business, and our fans may be wondering, “What are you going to do after the 20th anniversary?”. I think we’re entering a period where we need to show our fundamental strength as a band. We want to continue our activities so that everyone can feel what the GazettE is all about, cherish what we’ve been protecting, and challenge ourselves with new things.
URUHA: I think that the process of revisiting past songs live and releasing the best-of album in honor of our 20th anniversary gave us a good impulse for the coming year and beyond. When we faced our past again, we were able to reconfirm and gain a deeper understanding of who we as the GazettE are, and now we are well-prepared to create something new from this point on. Looking forward to moving on to the next project!

some The Jaws Of Life takes, now that the album has collectively sunk in for me a bit more, from the perspective of a PTV fan of nine years:
- gonna be bold and say in its own way, this album gives me the most a flair for the dramatic vibes of anything they've released since, ESPECIALLY flawless execution
- emergency contact feels somewhere in between flair and selfish machines, with a modern twist. even lyrically it reminds me of some strange little track that might be in the middle of selfish machines.
- i also saw someone say, before i listened to the album, that it in a sense feels like floral & fading embodied by an album. and in hindsight, i can understand that. i think based on misadventures + things the band has said about this album's direction, people should go in expecting a take on ptv comparable to moments like that, which also manage to encapsulate the past. i will say it reminds me of collide with the sky the least of all the albums, instead choosing to recall ptv's origins, further develop, yet also reinvent, the direction of misadventures, and chase the future of the band.
- and if you want to go HARD to a song? well, you've got the moment that introduced us all to this era, pass the nirvana. truly a track that pushed the boundaries of what ptv's "heavy" side can mean, in my opinion.
- flair and selfish machines were truly NOT *excessively* heavy albums and i wish people would consider that more. did they have their moments? absolutely. but, in fact, that dreamy, confessional, brooding, sort of far out vibe (and take on post hardcore) those albums have most of the time has always been, to me, the quintessential aspect of ptv, and my personal favorite. and the reason selfish machines is my favorite album. and that element is very much there on jaws, just translated more into this evolved sound. to clarify, i'm talking moments like these few
and for me, that's why a massive, yet atmospheric track like even when i'm not with you (+ its counterpart, resilience) feels just right in pierce the veil's discography.
- and then there's moments (like the title track, which initially had me going from "wait, is this a semblance of selfish machines? no, that's not quite right... i don't think i've heard this from them before", or so far so fake's infectiously melodic hooks) that i can't specifically trace back to a specific era, yet feel so unequivocally ptv.
what i'm trying to say, essentially, is that ethos that makes ptv the incredibly unique, somewhat twisted, deeply emotional entity it always has been is abundantly and familiarly there, it just presents itself in a refreshing way.
this is not collide with the sky 2.0. and that, it shouldn't be.
i could talk about pierce the veil forever, man. such an original goddamn band, historically such a unique spin on post hardcore that i've never seen another band quite capture + an ability to go beyond defined genre limitations, one of the bands that made me love music in the first place nine years ago. feel free to share your takes <3

Face Reviews
Grammy
Though he may seem delicate at first glance, Jimin demonstrates his unpredictability and willingness to take risks on FACE. He exposes emotions that may be tough to divulge in relatable ways, while also creating music that simply sounds good.
Challenging himself with intense choreography, rapping and bold conceptual choices, Jimin's first solo project proves he's a visionary in his own right. FACE offers an impressive introduction to Jimin's abilities as a solo performer — and a promising one at that.
Consequence
Many of Jimin’s solo tracks in BTS’s extensive discography are sweet, tender, or more in the ballad space; it’s absurdly fun getting to see him prioritize harder edges, beat drops, and R&B influences with this project. Its six tracks wrap all too quickly, and while it was specified that Jimin doesn’t consider this a full-length project, it does leave the listener craving more music in this vein somewhere down the road — it’s worth repeating that the energy of “Face-off” is one that he should consider chasing most of all.
Nylon
If Jimin’s previous works were bubbling whispers, Face is an honest scream into the void. The album wrestles with self-inflicted torment but ends on a new beginning as an artist as he shows off a previously unseen creativity through his use of personal snippets and clips. Listeners now meet Jimin as he stands in unfamiliar territory, one that exhibits his desire to evolve beyond the BTS title, at the cusp of something even greater to come.
Quietus
Jimin’s Face is, perhaps, one of the most anticipated solo projects from BTS since he is one of those members whose tones we didn’t get to hear so often – only a limited number of times on the solo tracks of BTS albums and one or two songs here and there. While it’s a short EP, it doesn’t disappoint. If anything, he presents himself as a soloist with an unexpected sound for his high-pitched countertenor voice and very far from those earlier ballads we have heard from him.
NME
FACE’ might not be flawless but even in its missteps it reflects the turbulence of modern life – and especially of the last few years. If Jimin’s mission on this record was to stretch himself creatively and distil that dissonance in these songs, it’s one he’s accomplished.
Junkee
Though the tracklist is short — six tracks in total, including one musical interlude and an English version of the title track, “Like Crazy” — FACE offers a cohesive narrative that takes the listener on an emotional journey with Jimin. As though moving through the stages of grief, we explore his anger, denial, and depression, before finally moving to acceptance and a determination to overcome.
The Harvard Crimson
While mini albums as short as “FACE” — just five tracks and an English version of “Like Crazy” — can often sound like a disjointed collection of B-sides, the album sets itself apart through seamless transitions that takes listeners from track to track telling a cohesive story of doubt and discovery. While each song can be listened to individually, it’s clear that it was designed to be listened to from start to finish in a single setting. With a runtime of just under 20 minutes, Jimin takes listeners on a journey of heartbreak, avoidance, introspection, loneliness, and eventually, hesitant self-acceptance.

Warnings and FAQ
A few days later…
Female Employee 1: Kawanaga, complete this data analysis!
Female Employee 2: Collate the results of this web survey into a table! I need it fast!
Female Employee 3: Do the data collection I need for my presentation! Hurry up!
Rina: On it!
Ever since the competition was announced, everyone at the office was more fired up than usual.
All the tasks assigned to me revolved around finding information on exe Creed.
(Everyone is desperately working on their project planning. I mustn't let myself lose to them.)
And yet, the amount of tasks constantly flowing in and piling up made it near impossible for me to work on mine.
(I need to get my project plan out one way or another…!)
On my day off, I went to the shopping district.
(If I can’t get anything done on a regular day, I’ll just have to work extra hard on my off days…!)
(exe Creed’s new song will be releasing today, and there's going to be a special MV broadcasted on the streets.)
(I hope that watching the MV will give me some ideas for the project.)
The broadcasting time for the MV was announced on the group’s SNS platforms.
As it got closer to the time, many young girls started gathering near the LED screen.
(Almost time…)
Everyone was waiting for the moment. And then… exe Creed appeared on the screen.
Girls: *fangirl screams*
(Wow, the cheering is incredible!)
The members danced and sang in a high quality video on the screen.
Young Lady 1: OMG! Isn’t the special edition MV the best!?
Young Lady 2: They’re SO cool! I’m glad I could catch the MV on the big screen!
The MV was certainly impressive, and everyone there was captivated by it and cheering with wild enthusiasm.
Rina: …
Thanks to the extensive research I had done on them lately, I knew in detail about the group’s discography, history, and members.
(With unrivalled glamour — Jace.)
(Drawing the attention of his audience with his wild dancing skills — Finn.)
(Dance moves as sharp as a precision instrument — Hugh.)
(The leader who brings each member’s individuality together in harmony — Ivy.)
(And… the member with an overwhelmingly powerful stage presence — Xeno.)
Rina: Amazing…
Their brilliance was mesmerising.
(I’m not very familiar with singing and dancing, nor did I know much about exe Creed before this.)
(Even so, I’m aware that there's something “special” about them. Their level of popularity is understandable. However…)
Many women around me were drawn by their performance on the screen and stopped walking to watch… and yet, something just felt off to me.
(What could it be? The visuals are flawless, their music and dance are impressive too… but something’s missing.)
Rina: I wonder what it is they're lacking…?
I continued watching their performance with intense concentration.
The camera zoomed in on Xeno, and his gaze turned towards it.
Rina: !
I instantly thought of something the moment my eyes caught his icy gaze.
(That’s IT! I must write down what I’m thinking of right now…!)
I pulled out a slip of paper and desperately jotted down my thoughts.
As though it were aiming for that “perfect timing”, there was a strong gust of wind.
Rina: Whoa…! Ah, my memo!
The slip of paper flew out of my hand and vanished in no time.
(Oh no…!)
It was too late for regrets. I gave up searching for it and wrote my ideas down on another slip of paper before turning to leave.
(I should get back as soon as possible. Before I forget about this feeling, I must put my plan together!)
— At the same time, a group of young men were standing a small distance from the LED screen and watching Rina’s movements.
??? (Jace): That girl’s facial expression while watching the MV was pretty intense.
??? (Finn): Doesn’t that show that she was captivated by our performance?
??? (Ivy): Hopefully, that’s the case. Anyway, the responses to the MV were better than expected. This promotional campaign was a success, right?
??? (Hugh): … There's a lot of people.
??? (Xeno): … Understood. I’m done observing the situation in front of the screen.
??? (Sakura): OK, let’s all get into the car then. We don’t have much time before your next schedule.
The rustling sound of paper came from underneath his shoe.
??? (Sakura): Hm? I stepped on something… a memo?
??? (Jace): Isn’t that the paper that girl from just now was writing on?
The man picked up the paper and read its contents… his eyes widened slightly.
??? (Sakura): …!
Tumblr media
??? (Finn): What's up?
??? (Sakura): Nah, it's nothing. I thought I just saw something interesting. Fufufu.
??? (Ivy): ? I have no clue what's going on, but you seem quite happy…

Swallow the Sun primer
For @devoured-by-shadows but anyone who's interested in discovering the Finnish doom masters that are STS are welcome to read! The post's addressed to them because it began as an ask and I went overboard Like I do hahaha
Swallow the Sun, shortened to STS, are a LEGENDARY doom metal band from Finland. They formed in 2000, created by master of Gloom, Beauty & Despair Mister Juha Raivio himself, composer and guitarist who will rip your heart right out of your chest and leave you in a puddle of tears with the beauty of the crushing tales he weaves. Within a year they had Matti Honkonen on bass and the absolutely extraordinary Mikko Kotamäki on vocals to form the core lineup which has remained stable since 2001. Drums and second guitar have changed a bit over the years (notably they had Kai Hato behind the kit from 2009 to 2015, #bestEraOfSTS. You may know Hato better from Wintersun, or Nightwish nowadays. He's one of my all time drum idols and, no joke, one of the softest, kindest, most gentle souls I've ever met in my life). STS's got the same lineup since 2018.
I will admit that Kotamäki's vocals are somewhat of an acquired taste, it did take me a while to get used to it too, but give it the time it deserves. He has cleans and screams to offer and once it hits, it's transcendental. Once you'll fall in love, this man will ensnare you and his voice will own your soul. He's definitely refined his vocal technique too, the song you heard No Light, No Hope is from 2007, he was still pretty raw then. I like the rawness but it is less accessible than how polished he sounds now. I don't see any reason why his recent vocals would not hit the mark for you, knowing what I know of your stellar music taste.
Through their career they have released 8 full length studio albums with the occasional EP and single release dotted throughout. Legit, they do not have a single bad album. They have rather different albums, and you will vibe with an era more than with another, most likely. It's up to you to find where STS clicks for you, which type of haunting menalcholy do their grip and won't let go of. As long as you are into doom metal and slow, melancholic, longing, painful, mournful 5-15 minutes songs, they will hit for you. Their lyrical universe is stunning, and once you're sucked into their sound, there's a non-negligible chance they will become a go-to band to cry to when you need to get it out. I know that's what they are for me. You just need to be in a mood for sad shit.
Keeping in my mind that my actual recommendation is "just listen to the entire discography from start to finish because it's 100% worth it and flawless perfection", I also recognize my bias and how unrealistic that is XD So I shall now proceed to go album by album in chronological order (which is also the order I recommend discovering them in because their progress is very satisfying to hear) and rec some songs to start your Swallow the Sun journey with!
Tumblr media
Off of 2003's The Morning Never Came, I suggest: Deadly Nightshade Swallow (Horror Pt. 1) my favorite STS song because of personal reasons and attachment
Tumblr media
From 2005's Ghosts of Loss, I suggest: The Giant Fragile
Tumblr media
From 2007's Hope I suggest: Don't Fall Asleep (Horror Pt. II)
Tumblr media
2008's Plague of Butterflies EP is one of the most ambitious, gut wrenching and honestly seminal projects in doom metal's history. It's a 35 minutes song that is a must listen in any metalhead's journey. Sit down, grab the lyrics, dim the lights and feel the beauty and sadness of one of the most wonderful and painful musical tales to ever come out of the genre. Unbeatable shit. My 2nd favorite STS song.
Tumblr media
Off of 2009's New Moon, I suggest: Lights on the Lake (Horror Pt. III)
Tumblr media
Off of 2012's Emerald Forest and the Blackbird, which is where I feel you'll start to hear the shift into STS's "modern sound" so this may be where you start to like them more, I suggest: Labyrinth of London (Horrors pt. IV) my 4th favorite STS song, the 3rd will come later This Cut is the Deepest Hate, Lead the Way
Tumblr media
2015's Songs from the North is quite the outlier project in this band's discography because it's a triple album. It's legit 3-4 hours of music. Each album, I, II and III have a distinct sound and pull from different inspirations: you have a heavier metal one, an acoustic one and a deep slow doom 10+ minutes-per-song one. It's a big ass mountain to climb cause there is so much material here and it's not been trimmed. I sincerely feel like they could have made a single 12-13 tracks album with the three discs, idk. I don't suggest starting here at all, this is more of the deep dive album at the end of the journey if you really love them: Lost & Catatonic
Tumblr media
Which leads us to the masterpiece of Swallow the Sun's discography, 2019's When a Shadow is Forced into the Light. Listen. There is a lot of history behind that album. A very painful personal history in Juha Raivio's life. I could recount the whole tale one day, because as STS fans we lived through it in a small way. With all the distance in the world, it wrecked me. 4 years later it still makes me very, very emotional. Long story short, Raivio's wife Aleah Starbridge, the Nightingale, beautiful soul, beautiful flamme, for whom we still hold the torch alight, passed away and this is the album of his grief. I think even without knowing the whole story, the album speaks for itself. This is one of my top 5 albums of all time. All genres, all bands, all music altogether, this album is one of the most beautiful, most difficult listens I have ever heard and it changed me deeply. This album completely changed me. There's a before and an after. Me and my father made our first listen of this album together on the road when it came out. Mw dad's a man from the 50s so you know he Does Not Cry, I have seen this man cry probably 5 times in my entire life, and one of those was us listening to this album for the first time. We had to pull over to the side of the road so we wouldn't get in an accident and we just stayed there, listened, held each other and sobbed together. I will never forget that memory. So as far as songs go? Just listen to the entire album. For real. Take the hour out of your life. It's worth it, trust me. When you're in the mood to take it obviously. Every song here is pure musical perfection. Stone Wings is my 3rd favorite STS song, but it deserves to hit in the context of the album. Do me and yourself a favor and experience the entire thing as it was meant to. Start of the playlist here
Tumblr media
2021's Moonflowers is their latest release currently and I suggest: Woven into Sorrow
And those are the broad lines of Swallow the Sun! I hope you enjoy your journey in this universe of Gloom, Beauty & Despair! If you have any comments / questions about them (yes I have hagning out with the guys annecdotes too XD for instance hahaha) hit me up anytime!

fuck i should be sleeping it's 1am and my exams are in 8hrs but i need to get this out of my system.
these days I'm realizing how much i miss bts, like really, their older stuff just hit so hard, everything up till mots7, and I'm just feeling so much nostalgia? I was 15 when i first discovered them, I'm turning 22 in a few days and it's insane to me how they've been in the most broken part of my life and just idk, bts man.
I wish I could express more about it but I just can't put it into words, looking at their discography and how it perfectly aligns with my heart and my experience, how I just UNDERSTAND IT, not just vibe, it just makes me wanna cry. And to think that SVT are slowly becoming that for me but more with their personalities than their music? I mean yeah definitely, SVT's discography is flawless but it's just so different than BTS's and they both cater to my taste in different ways. I just love them.
I know you'd get it since they're your faves too, sorry for the long rant. gn 🖤
hello friend. i hope your exams went well!!
i definitely get what you’re saying. for me, it’s slightly different because i didn’t get into kpop until 2020. in another way it’s hard: bts’ older music is what made me a fan, and i struggle with missing so many eras in real time. luckily, there are tracks off be i really like, but the feelings they create are not comparable to what tear (for example) does for me. although, i do really fucking love stay and blue & grey
i’m glad you were able to witness past eras as they were happening and hold those memories. it’s fascinating how music intertwines with our lives and ends up serving as reminders for experiences. at the same time, it also helps us get through absolute shit.
personality wise, i definitely feel much more connected to seventeen. however, i can’t say i prefer one group over the other in terms of music. i feel like their discographies impact me in different ways. i feel the same way about monsta x and nct. each group has songs that are literally heaven to me.
i have so many thoughts on this subject, but i’m not sure if i’m successfully putting them into words. what i will say is that i can imagine how hard it is for you to miss bts’ older music. tracks that join you during times of darkness end up being deeply cherished, imo. i truly hope future releases from bts will feel the same way debut-mots7 tracks do.
what were your thoughts on indigo and jitb? did any of those songs feel right to you? my expectations for indigo were high, but none of the tracks hit me like mono tracks did and still do. i only listened to the album once. it might be worth circling back around to, but usually if they don’t get me right off the bat, they never will. luckily, there are songs off jitb i really love (equal sign and safety zone). there’s something about hoseok’s music… maybe it’s the aquarius energy we share lol— i see him

Sam Evans and "Fearless" (2008)
Sam Evans is obviously the biggest Swiftie in the New Directions (and I will forever be salty that he never sung one of her songs) so I've tasked myself to go through her discography and relate her songs to Sam in someway (an AU idea, when he could sing it in Canon, or when someone else could sing it to or about him)
Feel free to use any of these as prompts for fanart/fanfic and let me know if you do!
Albums: Taylor Swift (2006) | Fearless (2008) | Speak Now (2010) | Red (2012) | 1989 (2014) | Reputation (2017) | Lover (2019) | Folklore (2020) | Evermore (2020) | Fearless tv vault songs (2021) | Red tv vault songs (2021) | ALL POSTS
Here's Fearless (2008) to continue our journey (lyrics linked)
"Fearless" (2008)
Jump Then Fall
Samcedes feels 😍
Like just after Prom Queen as they're just getting together. I can imagine Sam singing it as a way to tell her that it's okay to fall for him. I have a huge headcanon that he and Mercedes spent a lot of That Summer on the bank of the Lake in a little hidden place. Mercedes reading, Sam drawing, both jamming out and singing together to Sam's guitar - this is one of his go to songs.
'Cause every time you smile, I smile // And every time you shine, I'll shine for you
(so many of these are going to be Samcedes based I just know it)
Untouchable
Samcedes again
basically I can see this in S3 when they're kind of skirting around each other and not together but not not together, you know? and especially this line
Like a million little stars // Spelling out your name
makes me think of them, because of Human Nature and Mercedes' names up in lights.
Here is a gif set I made to the song 🥰
Sam just wants to get back together with Mercedes, but she feels untouchable in that moment and being around her so close after missing her so much is just so hard when she won't let him in again
Also Hevans would be perfect for this song too.
Come on, come on // Little taste of Heaven Hevans
Come In With The Rain
and once again, Samcedes.
This time from Mercedes' POV though, after Sam leaves for Kentucky, just wishing he'll be back.
Just know I'm right here hopin' // That you'll come in with the rain
Superstar
Samcedes AU where Mercedes was a youtube singer in High School and Sam was a huge fan of her from the start, one of the first commenters. She gets a record contract after highschool and starts touring and finally Sam is able to see one of her live shows and go to a meet and greet. She smiles at him and talks to him and he's totally freaking out and trying not to show it because he's kind of watched her grow into this Superstar of a singer for years now and he's finally meeting her and he blurts out that he's been subscribed to her from the very start and she remembers his goofy screen name (SamIAm) and the comment he left on her first video and he's totally freaking out now but in a good way because she's everything he though she would be. obviously they get together somehow but idk how
Give me a photograph to hang on my wall, superstar
The Other Side Of The Door
I can kind of only think of an angsty little hevans fic from Kurt's POV after an argument for this one
Me and my stupid pride are sitting here alone // Going through the photographs, staring at the phone
Fearless
Samcedes First Kiss after getting caught in the rain
Well, you stood there with me in the doorway // My hands shake // I'm not usually this way // But you pull me in and I'm a little more brave // It's the first kiss // It's flawless // Really something // It's fearless
Fifteen
I'm just going to base this on these lyrics
'Cause when you're fifteen and somebody tells you they love you // You're gonna believe them
This just feels so much like Sam and how quickly he fell for Quinn it's ridiculous, especially since he's 15 in S2 (turns 16 in Rumours/before Prom Queen)
Love Story
There's something very Sam about this one, but I'm not sure what ship i would go with.
I think it's the whole—
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring
—thing that reminds me of Sam the most, like the scene with Quinn and the promise ring, and him "marrying" Brittany. Sam is definitely not scared of commitment. He also wouldn't be scared of having a star-crossed lovers sort of relationship, he'd stand up for his relationship no matter who was in opposition.
I'm thinking a M/M ship simply for the more taboo nature of it, maybe a Blam AU?
Hey Stephen
Samcedes Mercedes POV
Of all the girls tossing rocks at your window // I'll be the one waiting there even when it's cold // Hey, Stephen // Boy, you might have me believing // I don't always have to be alone
White Horse
Sam POV after Quinn cheats on him with Finn. He totally had this song on repeat for like a week after that.
This ain't Hollywood, this is a small town // I was a dreamer before you went and let me down
You Belong With Me
Hevans
this song is such a hevans song for me, Kurt pining over Sam while he's with Quinn. The writers were cowards for not having Kurt sing this song while looking longingly at Sam, It's too perfect.
Breathe
She's cheer captain // And I'm on the bleachers // Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find // That what you're looking for has been here the whole time
It has come to my attention that this also works really well for s4 Blam. Like so perfectly well it's insane. Even better than Hevans.
Here's a video by @daltonblaine
Sam leaving Mercedes when he goes to Kentucky
Never wanted this, never wanna see you hurt // Every little bump in the road, I tried to swerve // But people are people and sometimes it doesn't work out // Nothing we say is gonna save us from the fall out
Tell Me Why
Fabrevans breakup again. Another song Sam totally had on repeat
You tell me that you love me, then cut me down // And I need you like a heartbeat // But you know you got a mean streak // That makes me run for cover when you're around
You're Not Sorry
This is yet another song Sam had on repeat after the fabrevans break up
This is the last straw // Don't wanna hurt anymore // And you can tell me that you're sorry // But I don't believe you baby
The Way I Loved You
Samcedes Mercedes POV about Sam when she's with Shane
It's a roller coaster kind of rush // And I never knew I could feel that much // And that's the way I loved you
Forever & Always
Samcedes from Mercedes POV after Sam moves to Kentucky and just stops communicating with anyone from McKinley
It rains when you're here and it rains when you're gone // 'Cause I was there when you said forever and always
The Best Day
This is a hard one because it has such a story to it. But I'm thinking maybe from Stevie or Stacey's POV and how good of a brother Sam is? That would be cute I think. Just ignore the last couple of verses that make it obvious that this song is about a mom and a child and it would make a really cute little song fic 🥰
There is a video I found from back when I was three // You set up a paint set in the kitchen and you're talking to me
Change
Sam sings this in Comeback as an 'Anthem' instead of Baby and then the whole episode is just Taylor themed instead of Bieber.
and obviously the episode ends with Mean.
Here is a link to a post where I outline this very idea for the gleeful-painbox-project prompt 5: previously unaired
So we've been outnumbered // Raided and now cornered // It's hard to fight when the fight ain't fair // We're getting stronger now // Find things they never found // They might be bigger // But we're faster and never scared

an unreasonable gush post for fictional band, infant sorrow.
Tumblr media
infant sorrow is without a doubt one of the greatest musical moments in all of history, fictional or not. if 'coming up' doesn't legitimately inspire you, you're lying. if 'inside you' isn't your wedding song, you're lame.
so let's get into what makes this amazing musical experience what it is. let's talk russel brand/aldous snow. the man is a BRILLIANT creator of literally all things. he's an intellectual mind with a spiritual soul and a comedic outlook on life. his comedy is always quick witted and deliberate. this plays a role in the music of Infant Sorrow. now, let's get into the actual music. we'll start with the ONLY song i DON'T like, just to get it out of the way:
'furry walls.' i feel like this song was thrown together quickly as a lubricant for a scene in the film. this song is not canon part of the discography for me. period.
Tumblr media
moving on. let's get into my FAVORITES:
'yeah yeah oi oi' --this is really a britpop masterpiece. it's fun, it's catchy, it's witty, and it just makes you fucking smile. the lyrics are so sharp but sweet and hilarious. case in point: "yeah yeah, oi oi, put your hand up for sex, for me and me helmet and wherever it winds up next" sweet and cute, but then "put your hands up for our queen, for shagging five birds in the back of limosine" dirty and delightful. and the bridge? beautiful. i could go on and on about this song, but we've got more to get to, so.. YEAH YEAH, OI OI, put your dominant hand....on the mouse to scroll to the next paragraph.
'i am jesus' --this song is CRIMINALLY underrated (within the 'infant sorrow' universe and within the real life universe). let's take a little look at the lyrics. "i am jesus, welcome to the church of me" a fantastic start. polarizing to some, DELIGHTFUL to intellectuals. "i've come to feed the fish, heal the world, but first a dirty little kiss" FLAWLESS. "i wear a thorny crown, i live in Honeytown" ;;it's always bordering on sacreligious but in a way that is instantly forgivable because it's so stinking CAMP. "i am mahatma, taking it to the streets, give me your daughter, let me rub your dirty feet." hilarious because in the bible, men literally would give away or sell their daughters. fun little dig at the ridiculousness of biblical religion. and as for rubbing dirty feet, i'm a foot lover myself. so i always appreciate a reference to the love of feet, especially dirty ones. there's actually the most romantic story in the bible where mary magdalane is so in love with jesus, but she doesn't know how to show it the right way 'cause he's literally fucking JESUS, so she shows her love by washing his feet with her HAIR. anyway. that turned into a weird tangent, but it seemed necessary. well, MOVING ON then...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
let's get into one of the absolute BANGERSest bangers: 'bangers, beans, & mash' --this song .... is golden. "a suicide in SoHo grand, my wrists so tired from working with my hands..." now this is a BAR and a half. period. this song is honestly filled with so much real emotion and honest feeling. and the musicality is beautiful. "why has the world gone so still? the world is so still, i feel that my next meal might be my last...so will you come for my bangers....my beans and mash?" i mean you can FEEL emotion from this. it's an honest diary put into music form with a catchy brit-centric title and chorus. brilliant. the only word that describes this is BRILLIANT. i feel like i don't even need to go more in depth into this song, as it's the most well known from the film, and everyone loves it and knows it. if you know you know.
let's get into an underground hit, 'just say yes' --a double entendre beauty of a song. if the beatles had a better sense of humor, they would have written this song. "mother mary, marijuana, uncle charlie, top banana" alone is beatles-esque in nature. but this whole song is a convoluted love letter, and everything brit-punk, brit-pop is about honestly. his love is an addiction. and he's a drug dealer in love. when he says "snort me chase me swallow me whole, or take me up your arse if that's the way you wanna go" i felt that. lovely for love and still witty and hilarious.
Tumblr media
let's get into the least favorite (canonically from the film's inhabitants) 'african child' --i fucking love this song. deadass. it is SO FUCKING HILARIOUS. disrespectful, condescending, ignorant, and incredibly self-aware. russel brand is such a master at this kind of humor. he truly captures the "#activism" of celebrity culture. it's fucking CHOICE. period. "i have crossed the mystic desert to snap pictures of the poor; i've invited them to bruch, let em crash out on my flooooor" i mean FUCKING HELL that's great. so out of touch and ridiculous. it's just...and i use the damn word again...BRILLIANT. but i think one of the best touches is that he's actually doing a Swahili chant. he took the time and effort (in the film's universe) to gather the language and memorize and learn, but not to actually learn anything about the culture or educate himself. fucking amazing. let's move on, GOD THIS POST IS LONG.
Tumblr media
'coming up' --the magnum fucking opus. this song is probably such an honest piece from Russel himself (as well as aldous in the film). the parallels between russel and aldous are almost innumerable (which is why his films are so funny ;;because he's not playing a character, he's just exaggerating himself if even exaggerating. the lyrics are inspirational, it captures the vibe of a true power ballad. it's just MINT. in every possible way. when you've run out of drugs and you're going through it, it's called "coming down." this song, 'coming up' is the absolute opposite. done with the drugs, done with the misfortune, done with self-denial and pain and struggle and sadness. he's coming up instead of coming down. it's a beautiful word choice honestly. plus, "and for twenty bucks in the alley i'm going down, down, down" is a hilarious line. xD and the honesty and pain in "for the ma who always honored me i'm going down, down, down ;;for my pa who never wanted me can you hear what's going on? i'm coming UPPPPPPPPPP" honestly enough to make my chemically imbalanced ass actually cry.
and obviously, 'the clap' --an absolute banger. brit-pop royalty. it's catchy, it's fun, it's just subversive enough. it's a great addition to the film's universe. and it symbolized a special moment for aldous in the movie where he started to remember who he used to be and really kicked off his journey to self-realization.
oh shit! and 'searching for a father' --this one slaps and HURTS. for all of us with daddy issues....well, this song just works.
now onto some honorable mentions featuring the brilliant jackie q. because if 'ring round' isn't on your playlist, you're not getting my aux cord.
Jackie Q
'Supertight'
'You got to me Warm and you're tight I'm going to fuck you so deep I'll give you a lobotomy I'm a zombie You dug me from my grave You took me from Africa And made me your slave"
if these lyrics don't jostle your jimmy you're a dummy. this shit is hilarious, and so smartly worded for a song so debaucherous. "i'm gonna get precarious, i'm a motherfucking stratavarious" i mean...that's literally incredible. this song is a 10/10 would recommend.
'ring round' --needs no explanation. song about a tight butt hole. it's fucking perfect. pop perfection.
OH MY GOD AND I FORGOT 'LITTLE BIRD' i'm already done with this post but i'll be damned if i don't mention this one. it's literally beautiful with moments of comedy and silliness.
also 'riding daphne' is a fucking SMASH HIT.
and i can't believe i didn't do a paragraph on 'inside you' argh. but i love it ;;it's beautiful and remember "there's so much more than just a screw inside of you"
so anyway, this post is long as actual shit. i could do a whole 'nother freakout just about the movies 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' and 'Get Him to the Greek' but for now i'll leave it at the music. as far as i'm concerned, Infant Sorrow, is a REAL band, Aldous Snow is a real musician, and this is a perfectly legitimate fangirl moment.

Fela Kuti, Everything Scatter
Friday night of a long week. A little Fela sits about right. The title track and "Who No Know Go Know" both excellent platforms for his words, his sax playing, his flawless band.

@flippinfins well that’s one way for me to figure out my ask box was accidentally turned off, so thank you for that! Should be all good from now on :)
but anyways
2: favorite album
this is honestly so hard because she has such a flawless discography and evolution will always have a special place in my heart because that’s the tour I met her on, but I think right now it has to be eics, especially the fwd: deluxe! Her range on this album is phenomenal but before emails it was definitely singular act I
9: piece of merch I wish I got
I really wish I got the vinyls that she issued for evolution and singular acts one and two! At the time I didn’t have a record player and didn’t think I would ever get one so I just never got them and I’m so mad at myself that I didn’t, bc now the prices on resells are astronomical!!!!
I also really wish that I was quicker to the initial emails merch drop so I could’ve gotten one of the lockets because those were so fucking cute and such an original idea for merch
And then I’ll include apparel cause that’s what I think of when I think merch - I really wish I got either the detour hoodie or the beige Singular Act I hoodie, but I couldn’t go to either of those shows for outstanding life reasons and I try not to get merch from shows that I haven’t been to but now i wish i did bc they were cute!!!!

HATED KPOP SONGS THAT I LOVE (BC IM BORED)
1. on the ground - rosé
Tumblr media
i get why some people don’t like it i’ve seen some fair arguments, such as the edm drop and the dance being on the floor but as for me…well i will be playing this every day for the rest of my life, at my graduation, wedding, birthday parties, my daughter’s birthday parties, etc. i also have a fat crush on rosé so yeah hehe💕
2. hot sauce - nct dream
Tumblr media
now listen…hot sauce is not the best song ever created BUT it is twerkable so like why do y’all hate it you can throw it back to the chorus and tbh that’s all you need from a song. anyway i also have a soft spot for the dreamies and will support anything they put out tbh. also haechan. like is that not a good enough reason to like a song???
3. lalisa - lisa
Tumblr media
it’s cute and simple. also she’s on a pole and i love women. the breakdown in the traditional thai clothing ATE DOWN!
4. loco - itzy
Tumblr media
i’m actually not sure why people hate this song. haven’t heard a single valid argument to date. i got it on first listen but i have learned that not everyone is an intellectual with impeccable taste like me. also the english version literally gave us “sos for this kitty” what more do y’all want??
5. gunshot - kard
Tumblr media
the vocals were there. the aesthetic was there. the visuals were there. the raps were there. the choreography was there. it was all RIGHT THERE and y’all decided to hate it. anyway stan kard!!
6. rbb- red velvet
Tumblr media
not sure why y’all are trying to tarnish red velvet’s (almost) flawless discography by saying this song is bad. y’all just don’t want to say the truth and the truth is that you don’t like their “red” concepts and only stan red velvet for songs like “psycho” and to that i say please leave we don’t want you here
7. wannabe - itzy
Tumblr media
midzys correct me if im wrong but is the message of this song not the same as dalla dalla? i have not heard a good argument for disliking this song and im starting to think y’all just hate to have something to do to pass the time. ryujin owned this era i will not be silenced!
8. power up - red velvet
Tumblr media
so i know this song came out after bad boy and to that i say they announced a summer comeback so why were y’all surprised when it was a typical “red” summer song? i got it on first listen because that’s all you can do is get it like this is who red velvet is what are y’all complaining about?
9. kick it - nct 127
Tumblr media
NOW DONT SHOOT! i am not the biggest fan of this song myself but i will defend the chorus until i die because once again it’s twerkable like what more could y’all want than a chorus that allows you to throw it back and what more do you expect from the neo boys? they’re the same ones that made whiplash.
10. after school - weeekly
Tumblr media
if you don’t like this song all i have to say to you is that you hate fun and it must be miserable for you. she’s such fun and cute song like why wouldn’t you want that??? after school antis don’t interact!

I saw a post going around that said something to the effect of "Weird Al is gnc as fuck" and given the parody biopic that's about to come out I have a suspicion/worry that people are going to hail Weird Al as a perfect wonderful flawless person, discovery he has flaws, and then cancel him and then call anyone who still finds him amusing a bad person. So I want to make a post to try and nip that in the bud.
First, some background.
Weird Al has consistently been making music since 1983, and has released an album every 2-4 years since then. His last full length album, Mandatory Fun, came out in 2014 and after its release he stopped touring for a while to focus on his family. While he does have many original songs, he is best known for his parodies and polkas of popular songs. Given that he has such a vast discography, consisting entirely of comedic music, it should come as no surprise that some of his songs and lyrics have aged poorly.
He has multiple songs that are essentially just a series of fat jokes, frequently used the term "midget" in reference to little people, and has used many other terms that many people find offensive.
That being said, he has expressed regret about using outdated terminology on multiple occasions and apologized for doing so. So what does this mean in terms of engaging in his work? Is he completely forgiven and you can go happily listen to all of his work without a care in the work, convinced he is a paragon of liberal virtue? Or is he an ableist monster that deserves to be cancelled?
My thoughts are that he is a flawed, but ultimately decent human being capable of recognizing and apologizing for his mistakes. He's a sixty-three year old white man, so he is bound to put his foot in his mouth at some point, but probably has his heart in the right place.
If you are just starting to get into his music, go have fun, it's a blast and his band is incredibly talented. However, don't be shocked if some of the lyrics make you uncomfortable. He wrote them to be funny to a pretty wide audience, and what was funny to most people in the 80's, 90's, and early 2000's includes a lot of prejudice (I think the very worst example of this is the song "Jerry Springer" from his album Running with Scissors, listen with caution).
If you don't feel like supporting him because of those things, that's also completely valid, but I think it's also unreasonable to demonize people who are able to look past it and still enjoy his music.
Basically, I sense that there will be discourse on the horizon, and just thinking about it makes me tired.
The biopic looks fun, and most of his music is silly and fun, and I hope people getting excited about Weird Al can have a good time.

Hope you're having a great weekend bpp! You've said you're always listening to music. What are you listening to now?
**
Hi Anon,
Right now I'm listening to Just Like You Imagined by Nine Inch Nails. If you like rock you'll find it's a really good song. My favourite part of this track is the bass that perfectly accentuates the drums in 10/4 time signature.
youtube
*
NIN has an almost flawless discography in my opinion. If the above track felt a bit too much like acid rock, a more accessible introduction to the band is a cover by Kawehi that went viral some years ago I think. The song is called Closer.
