Dragons of Autumn Twilight highlights, part 3
-The draconians chase the group into the woods but then stop, figuring they have nowhere to escape to. Too bad the draconians didn’t block off Darken Wood.
-Sturm has a concussion from the fight and sees a white stag no one else can see. The stag leads them to Darken. Is it a hallucination as a result of his concussion, or a vision sent to guide him like the one that appeared to his hero Huma in the Age of Dreams? The world will never know.
-Raist is trying to put the pieces together but nobody wants to listen to him. “Children’s stories” indeed.
-Even though Raistlin knows more about Darken Wood than the rest of them combined, they still don’t want to listen to him. Surely he’s exaggerating the danger, right? Well, that’s the kind of thinking that gets you eaten, my friend.
-Soon after they stop, the group is surrounded by revenant warriors who can only communicate by using Raistlin’s voice. He gets overloaded a few times when the revenants all try to talk at once – that doesn’t seem pleasant.
-Tas gives the revenants the story thus far, in a way that wouldn’t make any sense at all if you hadn’t read the earlier scenes for yourself. I do love Tas’s stories.
-Since the party has the blue crystal staff everyone’s looking for, centaurs show up to take them to the Forestmaster.
-I’m honestly not sure how i feel about this whole sequence. It’s weird that in all the Dragonlance books i’ve read, this is the only part with centaurs, pegasi, and a unicorn. They just don’t seem to fit in with the rest of the world at all. Not to mention that the centaurs insist on addressing the party in Middle English, without any knowledge of grammar works in Middle English. I could go on a whole long rant about this, because it’s not – or shouldn’t be – that hard. The centaurs have worse grammar than gully dwarves, and that’s saying something.
-The Forestmaster throws them a party and tells them about the draconians and where Goldmoon needs to go next. When i write it out this way, it seems awfully contrived.
-Everyone’s trying to guess what the “greatest treasure” waiting for them in Xak Tsaroth is. Coins? Jewels? A magic sword? Flint figures “a keg of ale, and Otik’s spiced potatoes.” Someone has his priorities in order.
-As a side note, i found a recipe for Otik’s spiced potatoes once (i think in the Annotated Chronicles or Legends?) and it’s been a staple of my family’s diet ever since. I think it’s my favorite way to eat potatoes.
-The Forestmaster promised them all a ride to Xak Tsaroth, but her pegasi stop less than halfway because they’re scared to go any further. What was even the point then?
-Everyone has to be under a magical sleep while flying. What’s the point of that, either? I mean, i get that naturally landed beings might panic while up in the sky, but i think Tanis’s group aren’t getting enough credit. They know they’re going to fly, and it’s probably safer if you’re consciously holding on rather than just flopping around unconsciously.

I went out to retrieve my ForestMaster trailcamera today and I found this weird picture that it took?? I live just outside the Haunted Woods area, so i thought it was a sick furwitch at first, but a friend pointed out that it isn’t proportioned quite right and the eyes(?) are too big. I’m stumped. Can anyone identify what this thing is?

🍂🍂🍂 La Hoegne with a story... 🍂🍂🍂 --- To get autumn pictures with a river in Belgium you need to venture out to the Ardennes, there are several small rivers most which wander through forests. Not all of them are photogenic, but La Hoegne around Jalhay certainly is. The walking path along the river is about 5km and has a lot of photographic opportunities. If you want some quality time reserve at least a day and you will come back with a card full of beautiful pictures. Autumn season was getting on it's peak, after days of rain the forecast predicted an overcast day without wind. I knew I had to go out and take pictures at La Hoegne. The river would be nice 'thick' with water and the sun wouldn't pose a big problem with the contrast, so I left that day for my two hour drive to get there (yes Belgium is small, but still it takes some time to get to places). I started walking the river downstream and took some pictures along the way. I was already quite happy with my shots, until I reached this spot which I saw from above (the walking trail is in the top right of the picture). I immediately saw the potential of this scene, that fern, the streaks that small waterfall.. I headed down the trail, changed my walking shoes to my Wellington boots and proceeded with camera and tripod to stand in the middle of the river (it's not too deep). The framing was easy as I already envisioned the composition from above, from my previous pictures I knew 20 seconds would about right. Pushed the button and I was extremely happy with the result, that it was good for today. The rest of the river will be for next year. --- . . . . --- #belgianshooter #bvssquad #forestlife #waterfallphotography #divine_forest #forestmasters #earthoutdoors10k #woodlandphotography #automnephotography #waterphotography #belphenomenal #landscape_lover #fiftyshades_of_nature #enchantedforest #landscape_kings #visitwallonia #autumntime #earthlandscape #longexposureoftheday #walloniemabelle #belgiumoutdoor #ardennetourisme #longexposure_addiction #nfnl #landscapephotographymagazine #landscape_photography #natgeoadventure #promenadedelahoegne #lahoegne #jalhay (at Vallée De La Hoëgne) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHm3-XshaUF/?igshid=oieaf1az0rt7

I still have enough to make 4 with shields, I’ll do an additional leader too, so it is going to be 2x5 or something. Like 4x shield+gun and 4xshield+meleeweapon. They are from the Maiden World Rillizar.
From the Fluff Masterpost :
6th planet : Rillizar - “Shimmering Silence” - 1.4x Terra Size - 1 satellite, maiden-world, colonised.
A luxuriant world with mountain ranges, green forests and great lakes covering the whole planet. A few cities have been built in huge natural forest clearings and their inhabitants are mainly focusing on non-destructive agriculture, through underground facilities (there is the equivalent of several oceans of ready-to-drink water in underground caves).
Eldar are very protective of this world and a meticulous decontamination process is required to set foot on Rillizar. A few Eldar chose to withdraw from society and settle into a life of solitude, to better fulfill inward, meditative journeys. (This is the case of the now extremely old Razek Morr).
Its moon, Rillizarkerun is a lifeless mineral world which has a pink-to-blue hue and is of no interest for the Eldar of Caliran.
Additional info :
Upon discovery by Craftworld Lonad-Shair, it appeared that Rillizar’s Exodite population consisted entirely of Seers (aka Dreamers) from Arithash who had been banished (officially sent by Aritash’s government to protect the Maiden World, though it was a secret for no one that it was fear of the seers’ powers that motivated this exile).
Losing, over time, the knowledge of most of the history and legends of the Eldar and therefore, the nature and use of their powers, the exiled became a profoundly spiritual and animist society obsessed with answering the big questions arrising from their visions and abilities. Rillizarians didn’t reject technology though didn’t feel the need to use most of it. They kept in storage and maintained what they had brought with them, however.
Without any proper teaching, their psychic powers evolved, unconstrained, in unforseeable directions that to this day, 4000 years after joining the Empire, still baffle Craftworld-born seers.
Exodite Rillizarian population amounts to just a few millions. The most powerful of their “Nature-Seers” as they are called by the Seers of the Craftworld, are in high demand. They are usually specialised in a specific set of powers that will make them known as “Soilshifters”, “Beasttalkers” or “Forestmasters”.

Fic: Ak’tephari Prophecy Ch 56
Read at AO3
December 4th
Emma told herself it was an optical illusion that the trees seemed to part in front of them. There must just have been spaces that weren’t apparent farther back, right? It didn’t help that the trees felt even more alive and ancient here than elsewhere in the sanctuary.
But she also felt welcomed, though holding the hand of the person who’d been invited certainly helped.
The trees were thinning again, and then the forest opened into a clearing around a pool of water that looked perfectly round. An ancient Forester sat at the far side, eyes closed, barely visible in the dawn light and shadows. Emma turned to Regina, who looked just as lost as she felt.
“Come forward, my children,” the impossibly ancient man said, suddenly fixing them with a piercing gaze. The strength of his voice was at odds with his frail appearance.
As they approached him, they saw he was seated on a stone stool, and there were two others, which he gestured to them to take. Then he cocked his head at them. “I ask for the chosen one and a companion and receive two that are one. Interesting.”
“I’m sorry?” Regina asked, uncertain, glancing at Emma.
Emma shrugged and dropped Regina’s hand, in case that was what was bothering him.
"It’s no matter,” he assured them. “What is your purpose here?"
"The world is in grave danger, Forestmaster," Regina began, then hesitated.
"I have felt an imbalance of late, it is true," he agreed. "In the same omens that told me you would come to me to right it." He sounded skeptical.
"After a fashion, Father, yes, we do. It’s in your power to grant access to what we need to try,” Regina explained.
“What is it with this one?” the old man asked suddenly, tipping his head toward Emma. “Doesn’t she talk?”
“I thought that because Regina is chosen I should stay out of it,” Emma explained. It sounded silly coming out of her mouth.
He huffed a little chuckle. “But you’re in it. More, it seems, than you know.” He looked back to Regina. “What is it that you need?”
Regina came right out with it. “We request that you let us take from here the piece of the Orb of Aern that has been kept by the Foresters since the last age so that we can complete our quest."
His eyes widened, and he stared at them for such a long time that Emma started to shift uncomfortably. Finally, he responded. "That’s a great thing to ask, young ones. Few speak that name, nor know that these treasures are part of a greater whole. It is ours to keep it safe, just as it is ours to preserve the harmony of the forest lands."
"And they have been safe for over a thousand years,” Emma said deferentially. “But now the piece is urgently needed in the world. If we’re going to stop the spreading darkness, the Orb has to be reassembled."
"What do you know of Aern?"
It was an unexpected question, and Emma didn’t have much of an answer. "Only the name. I don’t even know if it’s a person or a place."
“Aern was a powerful man who lived thousands of years ago. Many cycles. He was a prince and a mage.”
“Did he make the orb, then?” Regina asked, eager to learn. Emma’s lips twitched trying not to smile.
“He did, eventually.” There was a hint of reprimand in his tone at not letting him tell the story in his own time.
“What happened first?” Emma urged.
“Aern was also chosen by the elemental powers as their vessel to stop the attack of the Xan in his time. And because he had so much power already, he did not appreciate the gravity of what was being asked of him. He was arrogant. He tried to focus all of the elemental powers through himself.”
Emma gasped.
“Ah, so this you understand,” the Forestmaster teased. “No mortal could do such a thing. He nearly died. It was sheer stupid luck that the one he loved was with him. His love let Spirit take control of him and guide his magic. But it broke his body, and it took many months before he could travel home. The full force of the elemental powers is not to be trifled with.”
Emma found herself wanting to be holding Regina’s hand again. She didn’t know why she had thought that the only risk was in being a blood sacrifice to the Xan. But the orb would keep her safe, wouldn’t it?
“Aern was brought here because this was the closest safe haven to Kyna. And here, as he healed, with the help of the Forestmaster of that time, he forged the orb, to give the magic a focal point other than the body of the vessel, and so it has been used ever after.”
“And so we need to use it now,” Regina said, and she was doing that noble and determined thing again that made Emma’s heart ache.
The old man gave a little amused snort. “Someone needs to use it now. It remains to be seen whether it’s you.”
Emma blinked. “Wait, what?”
“There is a test. There is always a test. How else to prove that you are in fact chosen?” He shook his head at her lack of understanding.
“Like in the citadels,” Regina said. Then she tilted her head. “Why aren’t they all in the citadels anymore?”
“Each of the four kingdoms claimed that it could protect the orb better than the others, and to prevent a war it was divided into its constituent parts and given to the four kingdoms to protect, with one piece remaining at Kyna. The citadels were built, and their magic worked for many centuries, with the chosen one gathering all the pieces as need arose.” He took a deep breath. “But over the cycles, things that should not have been forgotten were lost.”
“That’s convenient for the other guys,” Emma muttered.
The old man gave a small nod of acknowledgement. “Once the leaders of the four kingdoms had forgotten their sacred duty, the pieces were at risk. Some were removed as antique curiosities. Others forgotten altogether. We Foresters remembered, but we also knew that the Rowan piece was safest with us, so we brought it here for safekeeping.”
“Then what’s the test we need to pass?” Emma asked. “I assume we have to fight something. Will we be able to rest before we have to do it? And given back our clothing?”
This time he laughed out loud. “What a soldier you are. Do you know which piece this is?”
“Love,” Regina said with a smile.
“Yes, my child. And do you love?”
“Yes,” Regina said, openly, immediately. Emma couldn’t help smiling at her, because how was she so lucky to have this woman love her this much?
“And from her expression, I see who. Shall we see whether the elemental powers are equally certain? Come forward, my children. Hopefully, your time in meditation has rendered your Spirit clear enough for me to feel the truth of you.”
Emma swallowed hard, but didn’t look at Regina and just did as she was told, kneeling beside her on the thick patch of moss in front of the Forestmaster. He placed his hands on their heads and Emma felt magic respond, running through her and into his hands. But there was also a little tug sideways that felt like Regina. She fought back the confusion, trying to clear her mind, but she kept thinking about Regina—her smile, her quick wit, her incredible courage.
“Hm. Well that’s something you don’t see every day,” the Forestmaster muttered, then released them.
“What, Forestmaster? What don’t you see every day?” Regina asked, looking a little shaken.
“It would be dangerous for you to know too soon. But I am satisfied that you are indeed chosen of the elemental powers. The piece of the Orb is yours to use.”

Dragonlance Tales II: Love and War - A review
Tumblr media
Cover art by Larry Elmore, depicting “Raistlin’s Daughter”, one of the stories
With this third volume - called with the suggestive title of Love and War - the first trilogy of the Dragonlance Tales is closed. This book is by far the best of the three. The stories in this compilation revolve around, as the title says, the topics of love and war; that is, love in times of war, the war seen by those who love; and when I say love, I don’t mean romantic love only, but also other experiences and feelings are explored - friendship, loyalty, compassion - which, after all, are also aspects of love, although we hardly ever call them love for fear of prudish confusion.
This makes the reading of these stories much more enjoyable than those of the previous volumes: except for the last two stories, which revolve around the legend of Huma and the famous battle of the Tower of the High Priest - where Sturm, one of the main characters in the original saga, died in combat against Kitiara -; the other stories are very entertaining and even beautiful. To highlight, in a first group, A Good Knight's Tale, By the Measure and Hide and Go Seek, probably the best of the volume - especially the first two - and that despite not being written by Weis and Hickman, just excellent.
In a second group I would highlight Heart of Goldmoon and Raistlin’s Daughter, which, not being as good as those of the first group, become essential to delve into the past and future lore of the Dragonlance universe itself. The first was written by Hickman's wife and the second by Weis herself and her daughter. Of the first nothing to say, essential to know the past two fundamental characters - Goldmoon and Riverwind - before the events of the Chronicles; as for the second ... well ... it is oscillating in the fine line between cute and cringy. What is told in this story suits Raistlin's character as well as a machine gun fits a Virgin Mary statue, if you understand what I mean. I find it hard to believe that Weis, who has always written her favorite character so well, wrote such a thing, more akin to a bad self-insert fanfic than anything else. However, the tale can be saved a little from burning if you stand next to Caramon and decide that all this is a mere old nan’s tale invented by the people who, years after Raistlin disappeared, began to create legends for him to keep him alive, like you do with a saint, a martyr, or in his case, a god. At least, this story has given us the fantastic cover of the volume.
The rest of the stories are neither good nor bad, rather of varied quality, as always, that's why my volume rating stays at four stars. Hunting Destiny, the story of the Forestmaster and the white stag of Darkenwood, is quite boring, as Silver and Steel and From the Yearning for War and the War's Ending.  A Painter’s Vision and The Exiles are not so bad but they are very weird, I do not understand how they fit into the whole of the volume. The first one begins as a love story but ends up becoming something toxic and with a very bitter ending; as for the second... I just tell its authors that if they thought they were going to justify Sturm and his hatred for magicians with this prelude that hardly fits in with the rest of the character's arc, they can keep trying.
In short, the best one of the first trilogy, and as always recommended for Dragonlance veterans who already have experience in the universe of Krynn and who have the pleasure to continue delving into it - but for no one but them, I warn. Newbies already know that should not start with these.
