Five centuries ago, the prolific Portuguese flag-planter Vasco da Gama made landfall south of here, at Calicut, and pointed his fellow colonists upcountry, importuning them to settle across Goa’s viridescent hills and plains, and to amass spices and converts to Catholicism in equal abundance. The missionaries erected tall, whitewashed churches (almost all now designated Unesco heritage sites) and dense villages of brightly painted houses up and down its coast and along the slow-moving rivers that cross it, winding westward to the Indian Ocean. By the 1960s and 70s this temperate, tolerant, still largely inviolate Eden had drawn hippies and escapees from modern existence to its shores. There are dozens of Goas: some are exclusive, others as as a pirate’s map, some a beachcomber’s dream of a cabin, empty dunes and pounding surf. A former Portuguese colony isolated in British India, Goa is India’s Latin quarter. It is tolerant and capricious. It has that easy-going lassitude found in tropical coasts from Costa Rica to Zanzibar. Goans speak about India as if it were a separate country, and Indians as if they were another people. Where India has colorful temples and adobe villages, Goa has bright white churches and Portuguese villas. Climb the mountain so you can see the world, not so the world can see you. . . Setting goals in your life is as important as nature's call every morning. If you miss it, it's just going to be harder everyday. I know it's very difficult to set goals for the unknown but shorter and smaller goals makes it easier to achieve. . . Starting the morning with a good cup of hot tea/coffee is my everyday goal and when it comes with an encapsulating view and a great company, I have nothing to complain. @forttiracolheritagehotel is a heritage property located in the northern tip Goa across the border. The fort is of great historical importance. It's a symbolic location where freedom fighters from Goa demonstrated from time to time. The legacy of 300 plus years old fort now a luxury property speaks a lot about it's history. . . The island of Tiracol has always held a special part in my life. Having spent several summers there as a child, the fondness for the island only grew. When I was younger, I always wondered about what living on the fort would be like. When I was seven, I had a look at the rooms at what now becomes the Fort Tiracol Heritage Hotel. The view from the little balcony indeed mesmerised me. Years later, the hotel is taken over by a different owner, revamped - the suites are converted into rooms fit for royalty. But one thing remains constant - the view. It just gets better. With dolphins doing their happy dance in the bay, to the shore of Querim beach at the far left.. It's mesmerising. Imagine having breakfast at a place like that. Truly surreal. I'm so grateful to life for experiences like this. Thank you universe. You can’t control everything. Sometimes you just need to relax and have faith things will work out. Let go a little and let life happen. #tbt . . My friends at @happilyfoodies were coaxing me to take them to an offbeat location to eat and I couldn't think of anything better than @forttiracolheritagehotel when in Goa. We reached after an hours drive from Calangute and were already hungry. We wanted to have appetizers as I wanted to keep some space for dessert. . . The Tapas menu was quite interesting and offered some great options for us. I was intrigued by the herbed cous cous with spiced chicken spears. The dash of Lebanese cheese added some tanginess to the mood. The view from The Tavern just made us relax as we sipped on a bottle of beer. . . Goa has its charm every nook and corner. If you are ready to explore, it has lot to offer. I know I still so much to experience even after 14 visits.
