RIP The French artist #ClaudeLalanne at age 93 has now joined her late husband François Xavier Lalanne (who passed in 2008 at age 81) Also simply known as Les Lalanne, one of the most dynamic husband-and-wife artist duos of the 20th century. Only 2 months ago I had the pleasure of viewing some of their wonderful & often fun work @KasminGallery The exhibition was designed by their good friend world-renowned landscape architect Louis Benech @louis_benech_officiel The over 30 sculptures & sculpturesque furniture by Claude & Francois-Xavier Lalanne each hand-picked by Benech, in an installation featuring passageways reminiscent of the artists’ studio garden in Ury, France. The exhibition included one of Claude’s rare chandeliers, Structure Vegetale avec Singes (2012), as well as a Miroir (2010)—a work from a series famously collected by #YvesSaintLaurent for his “room of mirrors” in Paris. Francois-Xavier’s iconic monkeys (including Babouin (1984/1990) (fireplace) a herd of the artist’s sheep in the background. Other images Claude & #LouisBenech Claude & François-Xavier w #KarlLagerfeld at Maxim’s in Paris 1974 Claude Lalanne in 1969 w Yves Saint Laurent Claude in one of her Gingko chairs @benbrownfinearts LES LALANNE Known individually & collectively since the 1960s as Les Lalanne, the couple developed a style that defined inventive, poetic & surrealist sculpture. Having rediscovered the Renaissance art of casting forms from life, then employing contemporary electro-plating techniques, Claude Lalanne achieved a delicacy & sensitivity in her work unparalleled in cast bronze. François-Xavier Lalanne similarly found inspiration for his works in nature. In his words, "The animal world constitutes the richest & most varied forms on the planet."
