Whistling Winds

Linktober 2023

Day 4: Sage

The Sage of Wind shows off his skills to the other kids of Rito Village, teaching them to fly fast and shoot straight. When a flock of aerocuda appear and snatch one of the kids, Tulin has to prove his heroism by saving her. No challenge is too great for the Sage of Wind!

The frigid wind bit at Link’s skin and dug into the flesh around his fingers, despite the Rito down around his core and the small rubies tucked into each glove. Wind howled around him, an updraft wailing from cracked rocks below. Worn wood creaked beneath his feet, a dizzying drop onto gray stone below. Unforgiving and inhospitable terrain for a Hylian – a playground for a Rito.

Chittering laughter filled the biting air as colorful wings swooped around him, tumbling, soaring, and gliding through the updraft. Notts, Kotts, Cree, Genli, and Kheel fluttered around the Flight Range under the careful instruction of Kaneli, whose owl-wide eyes watched their every movement, critiquing them as necessary to correct their forms. While none of these girls were expected to be warriors, the tales of Tulin’s heroism atop Stormwind Ark inspired them to train. Link watched with a smile as Tulin stood atop the central pillar in the Range.

“Great job, Kotts!” Tulin called, grinning broadly as the little yellow Rito struck a target with her small bow. “See if you can hit two more! Cree, you’re pulling back too hard on that bowstring! It’s just a practice bow!”

Link sat down on the soft rug inside the nest of the Flight Range, glad to take a moment to rest. After throwing himself into the sky, crashing through the icy body of a flying frost demon, awakening the Sage of Wind, and taming a fatal blizzard, he was glad to have a moment of respite to hang out with his favorite nephew. Not that Teba ever said so. But having been brothers-in-arms, and Tulin being Teba’s son, Link decided that Tulin was his nephew-in-arms, and as such would be adored and spoiled accordingly.

“Watch where your wings are tilted, Notts! You almost flew right into the wall!” Kaneli warned. He shook his head with a soft hoot of a sigh. “These girls. I can’t believe they’re training out here already. It feels like just yesterday I watched them peck through their shells.” He chuckled softly. “Tulin, though, he’s the odd one. He cracked his shell and tumbled out of the nest almost immediately. Teba dove straight off the roost to catch him! The boy hadn’t felt the touch of wind for a second before he decided it was time to fly.” Kaneli’s yellow eyes softened as he looked at the young Sage. “Though I do wish this burden wouldn’t have come until the boy was a little older.”

Link nodded in agreement. He hardly remembered how young he was when he first drew the Master Sword from its pedestal in the Lost Woods. He couldn’t have been more than seventeen. Suddenly elevated from a rank-and-file knight in the barracks to the Princess’s personal bodyguard and Hylian Champion, what he recalled of his previous life was a whirlwind of destiny. But at least Link had a few years under his belt. As talented and adventurous as Tulin was, he had barely claimed his thirteenth summer.

Not that the boy seemed to mind it. The weight of destiny slid off his shoulders like oiled duck feathers. The secret stone glowed as it rattled around on Tulin’s ankle, the only sign that the boy was anything other than a child playing around the Flight Range. His white feathers beat against the wind as he took to the skies and fired off a handful of shots, showing the girls the proper technique. In a kinder world, that’s all Tulin would be—just a kid.

Link leaned back, feeling the scabbard of his sword against his shoulders. So would he, in a way. He’d barely scraped into his twenties. Other twenty-somethings in Hateno were busy with apprenticeships – the greatest concerns they took up was whether their crush liked them back and when they’d come up with the courage to ask them to dance at the harvest festival. None were tasked with so heavy a load as Link carried – none of them had to wonder if they’d ever see their lovers again.

As Link watched Tulin show off for the girls, firing shots three at a time from his father’s bow, Link wondered whether Tulin was really happy being a Sage. He’d talked non-stop about it to anyone who cared to listen. He showed off his secret stone, chirped endlessly about the ancient Sage of Wind and his ”really cool helmet”, and never shied away from an opportunity to shoot a few monsters in the face. And though Tulin proudly told his father about the battle with Colgera and how he helped the legendary swordsman save Rito Village, Link heard soft whimpers in the night when they camped out on the Rising Island Chain on their way back down. He’d stoked the embers of a dwindling fire, taking watch to let the boy rest. And while he doubted Tulin recalled the nightmare that shook his feathers, Link still felt the softness of Tulin’s fluffy down under his palm, soothing the boy back to peaceful sleep.

In a kinder world, children need not be brave.

A screeching cry pierced the laughter.

Link sprang to his feet, nocking an arrow on a borrowed bow, his blue eyes searching the gray skies.

Streaks of yellow zipped through the air, leathery wings beating through snow and upward gales. Sharp talons like polished swords dove toward the children.

The girls screamed in terror, scattering in every direction. Snow banks shivered as they plunged into the ice to escape the flock of aerocuda.

Link fired two shots in quick succession, piercing the wing and torso of the monster that dove toward the nest. Three more shots zipped out from the center of the gale, striking two more winged beasts and sending them plummeting into the rocks below. Link’s heart hammered in his chest as Tulin soared into the air, aiming his bow at the last few of the aerocuda, who fled almost as quickly as they came.

Tulin pulled back on his bowstring, his sharp beak tugging as hard as he could before he loosed a final arrow, striking one of the fleeing monsters. It tumbled into the snow with a strangled shriek.

Kaneli bounded across the wooden nest, his large talons scraping ancient wood just before he beat his wings, taking flight to join Tulin. “Girls! Are you hurt?!”

Red feathers peeked out from behind a snowbank. “I’m not!”

Yellow feathers rose from a crack between the rocks. “Me neither!”

Blue feathers flitted up into the gale. “That was scary!”

Purple feathers rushed forward from behind a bush, her eyes wide. “They took her!” Link’s stomach dropped to his feet. Tulin rushed over to Kheel, who shook like a leaf and wailed miserably. “We were trying to hide, but they snatched Genli before she made it!”

Link turned to his friend, readying his paraglider. “Tulin-!”

“On it!” The boy launched himself into the air. A gust of wind snatched Link’s paraglider up with him.

The aerocuda hadn’t flown far yet, their shadows darkening the snow-filled valleys below, a speck of green in their claws.

“Genli!” Tulin called, beating his wings as hard and fast as he could. Wind rushed all around them, a fierce gale sending Link flying toward their targets. “Hold on, Genli!”

“Tulin!” Genli’s terrified shriek cut through Link’s core. “Tulin!”

The flock of aerocudas banked hard left, circling back toward Link and Tulin – Genli dangled, held tight in their talons, shrieking and kicking.

Before Link could grab his bow, Tulin slammed his wings against the air. A rushing gale burst around him, even more powerful than the first. Tulin screeched over the frozen mountaintops, his father’s bow tight in his claws. “Let her go!”

Four arrows struck with deadly precision. The monsters howled, dropping out of the sky.

They didn’t release her.

”Tulin!” Genli cried, her voice descending quickly through the biting snow.

The Sage of Wind was a blur of white, disappearing into the frost. Link tried to track the little Rito, his eyes unable to follow the speed at which the boy dove.

Suddenly, the gale slammed up against Link’s glider again.

White and green raced skyward. Genli clung to Tulin, her wings missing several large feathers. Tulin flew them back to the Flight Range, leading Link back to the wooden deck where the other girls waited.

Genli set her claws back onto solid ground, still clinging to Tulin. Her wide, terrified eyes soon turned to wonder. “You saved me!” She chirped. She nuzzled her beak against his shoulder. “You’re my hero!”

Tulin blinked, suddenly surrounded by her sisters, who praised him with excited, grateful chirps. He looked to Link and Kaneli, startled for a moment by the attention.

Kaneli nodded in approval. “You flew as well as any Rito warrior I’ve ever seen. Even Champion Revali would have been impressed.”

Link doubted that immensely, as Revali was never impressed with anything beyond his own reflection, but the pride that shone on Tulin’s face stayed Link’s comment.

“Of course, I did!” Tulin declared. “I’m the Sage of Wind! That’s just what heroes do!”

The other children flocked and squawked around Tulin, chirping his praises and begging him to teach them how to fly like that. Link watched with an encouraging smile painted on his face whenever Tulin looked his way. But a deep cold settled in Link's stomach. Though Teba called his son a true warrior, the boy was only... a boy. Not for the first time, Link wondered if the Goddess had meant to choose Teba. While he would never accuse the Goddess of cruelty, especially in her choice of Sage, he prayed that she wouldn't let a child bear the same fate as the Champion before him.

"I discovered the existence of the character we're currently playing as AFTER I submitted this run, and I have no idea how I unlocked it. I think it might be because I beat the game on Hard? Because I can't find anyone else who has beaten the game on Hard. There's not a lot of information about this game on the Internet." (The game in question: Tall Twins Tower, a PS1 puzzle platformer title released the same year as the PS2, which wasn't released internationally save, apparently, some ports that may have been released in Hong Kong for PS3, PSP, and PS Vita. Yeah it seems pretty obscure.)

THE TRAGEDY IN TIMES SQUARE: MUTANTS & TERRORISM

TW: The article contains anti-mutant rhetoric that could be considered offensive

Some things are never meant to be. In the last week since I wrote my piece on the decimation of mutants Post-Cleanse ( see our august 7th issue for full coverage ) I’ve received a fair share of negative comments that I was not giving mutants a chance or my words were generalizing and hateful. I, personally, was not offensive. It’s my job to report the news and if that gets people talking it’s good. It’s on this side of a terrible tragedy though that I see I am now justified in my beliefs. Yesterday at approximately 1700 hours energy spikes were reported in Times Square. A popular New York tourist trap, the few blocks that it encompasses statistics show an average of 330,000 - 460, 000 visitors daily. News of this energy spike should have been reported to the Avengers instantly due to the high number of civilians, but it was instead the mutant X-Men who arrived at the scene to handle the situation internally. Recognized among the group was not one but two Cyclops (Scott Summers), the Wolverine (James ‘Logan’ Howlett) and two Icemen (Robert Drake). Also in the group was an unidentified man with Wolverine like claws, a telepathic man with a golden energy beam, a silver haired speedster, an unidentified who looked surprisingly like the deceased Pietro Maximoff and a woman in a baseball cap that some onlookers said looked like the Avenger Wanda Maximoff. Please see page two for elaboration on the potential presence of Maximoff.

Leading this merry band of mutant terrorists was Erik Lehnsherr, a man known as Magneto who has often been painted as the bad guy in your history books. Lehnsherr has, as of late, been residing on the mutant island nation of Krakoa and is believed to be in the Hellfire Club, headed by one Emma Frost. Next to him was Jean Grey, an original founding member of the X-Men who passed in the late 1980′s for reasons undisclosed but has been present in the last five years. All of these mutants stood against the 21 year old mutant Jean Grey ( not the one who was deceased ). Before going into the conflict, I have to ask my readers: how are the X-Men duplicating themselves? Are they clones? There’s no one worse to clone than a mutant, that’s for sure. The double appearance of Iceman, Cyclops and Grey raise some valid questions but the doppelgängers are surprisingly not the worst part of this situation. It was the younger Ms. Grey who seemed to be the problem. Early reports from the tragedy state that Ms. Grey arrived shortly before the other mutants did and seemed to be talking to herself and agitated. When the X-squad or whatever they like to be called these days arrived they attempted to talk to Ms. Grey before she lashed out and attacked. After that it appeared to be an all-out brawl with some civilians being escorted to safety and others being left behind and in danger. Photos and videos taken on site show something beautiful, terrible and disgusting. The pretty colors and swooping mutants may look like something out of an action movie but they were not superheroes. They were abominations with very little regard to human life.

Within the course of 45 minutes Ms. Grey managed to incapacitate most of the group and nearly killed a good deal of them, including the elder Ms. Grey. The conflict was only ended when Mr. Howlett managed to stab Ms. Grey through the chest, effectively stopping her attack. There was then an explosion that caused tremors and shattered windows as far down as the West Village. The explosion manifested itself in the shape of a giant bird made of fire, with reports stating it was picked up by satellites globally. In an exclusive video taken by an onlooker Grey’s body can be seen prone on the ground at the center of the blast radius. This video contains graphic imagery but can be found on the Daily Bugle webpage. Grey was later confirmed to be deceased, but Lehnsherr had fled the scene with her body before ambulances or reporters arrived. All of the mutants conveniently left, actually, before they had to answer for their actions to the public. Though it came as a surprise to this humble supporter, Mr. Lehnsherr responded to our requests for a statement. He advised the Bugle, “What happened in Times Square can only be described as a tragedy, as I am sure you have all already concluded on your own. Jean Grey lost control and it was our job to help her and control the damage to the best of our ability. It was never her intention to cause harm to either our kind or yours. In the end a decision was made, one that ended not with us helping her but with us taking her down. These were the decisions and actions of a small group who took the situation into their own hands. We will never know if the situation could have ended differently, but the city is safe now as it stands. Even though Jean paid for it with her life. Her body was immediately taken to the Island of Krakao after the incident and will remain there until a proper ceremony is planned in her honor. She will be missed.”

It wasn’t her intention. A rather weak excuse considering the irreparable damage that has been done. Hate is the last thing that we need to promote in a world like this one, one rocked by prejudice and both literal and figurative monsters. What happened in Times Square last night is, by all means, an act of terror against those who couldn’t defend themselves in a gross disregard. Property damage around the area has yet to be assessed by damage control services, but several theaters in the area and other restaurants and museums have been shut down for the foreseeable future with companies promising to get them up and running again as soon as possible. Some onlookers spoke of a voice in their ear forcing them to fight one another, but that ended as soon as Grey was fatally attacked. As many as two dozen civilians have been confirmed as deceased with up to a hundred injured and currently being checked at Mt. Sinai hospitals around the island. If you have a loved one who has not been accounted for yet, please call the Bugle Hotline to connect with others and authorities.

Regarded as a leader on the island of Krakoa - which is a whole subject of suspicion all together - Ms. Emma Frost also released an official statement for the Hellfire Club and the mutants of the nation. Ms. Frost went on record saying, “We hate to see history repeat itself, but sometimes it does. The world has never been kind to mutants but we aren’t prone to pity ourselves or perceived injustices. Instead we plan and we protect our own, which we attempted to do here. The Hellfire Club was not made aware of the plan to subdue Miss Grey due to the urgency of the situation, but we will not persecute our friends and family where no persecution is due. An action of a man is not limited to one finite moment in time and while Logan Howlett has chosen to not speak with the media for obvious reasons and a general lack of interest in a witch hunt, his actions were understandable. The same goes for still living Jean Grey, long a staple member of the community. Both are acting as Co-Headmasters of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning and would not take the loss of a student lightly. Tragedy is tragedy and we would never deny that. We will, however, remain thankful that the blast radius was not as deadly as it could have been. At this time we ask that the general public leave Krakoa to process this and the loss of one so young. As stated, her body will remain on the island until buried and there is no intent to turn it over to the United States government. We are mutants and we will do as we must. Any further questions or concerns can be direct to Briar Raleigh and we will respond at our discretion and convenience.”

After all we know about Frost and Lehnsherr it’s hard to take either of them at their word. Magneto has often been seen going against the X-Men, so his supposed grief at the loss of one seems to be a cheap act. Frost is held in higher regards due to her work with children, but her ascension to the throne in the long rumored and formerly secret Hellfire Club has swayed public perception away from her favor. Regardless, it is the ever steady former acting president Senator Robert Kelly who has weighed in on the incident. “We need to call things as the are,” he told a solemn crowd at the site of the incident this morning. “We’ve always needed to call things what they were but we never wanted to. We got caught up in mutant rights when there should be no such things. Mutants are not human. They don’t pretend to be. Mutants are as much human as Thanos was. Their bodies do not belong and they are a danger to others and clearly themselves as well. Had they truly cared about the American people a problem of this magnitude would have been reported so inhibitor collars and Sentinel Services could have been present to deescalate the situation. If an animal attacks a human they’re put down. Ms. Grey should have been put down long before she was able to do as much harm as she was. The innocent people who died today won’t get brought back, so I truly hope Jean Grey feels the weight of those souls wherever she is. I’ll be speaking directly to President Ellis about the incident and reaching out to the Avengers for their compliance in helping to control this dilemma that is haunting the American people. In the meantime, hold your loved ones close. Watch your back when you’re on the street. America is no longer safe as long as mutants run free.”

What happened is a tragedy. No one can deny that. It doesn’t matter if you side with the mutants or the humans. Lives were lost and people were fractured. Once again we have to rebuild from an incident that never should have occurred. Today I wrote this article with a heavy heart. I pray I don’t have to write another tomorrow.

A FAMILY AFFAIR:

As mentioned above, photos from the incident in Time Square place a woman who looks remarkably like Wanda Maximoff was spotted on site. Maximoff, an Avenger since 2015, has had a rather rocky career in the limelight due to her attack on Lagos and later status as a war criminal along with Steve Rogers. A confirmed victim of the Cleanse, Maximoff returned and was soon associated again with the Avengers after being pardoned for her international crimes. Interestingly enough, another figure at the scene was a silver haired speedster who resembled Maximoff’s deceased twin brother Pietro, who was a casualty of the Ultron attack in Sokovia also in 2015. The presence of the Maximoff twins lines up only when you remember the fact that they are the children of Erik Lehnsherr, a fact known by the public despite a lack of official acknowledgement by any of the three. The Maximoff involvement would be another strike against the Scarlet Witch as the Avengers have purposefully remained out of mutant affairs so far. A representative for Maximoff or the Avengers could not be reached.

IN OTHER NEWS:

Public opinion polls have shown that reception to our new Captain American, Sam Wilson, is currently lower than that of Steve Rogers before he put down the shield. People have cited that they lack the familiarity with Wilson that they had with Rogers while others could not list a specific reasons. Some have wondered if the lack of interest is due to the turbulent history of the shield as of late or due to more racially charged matters. There’s been no word from Wilson on the matter.

Everyone’s favorite Champions were spotted in Libya recently as shown by the news and social media posts. They continue to take the world by storm with their modern way of reaching their audience and social justice causes. Ms. Marvel and Spider-man ( not the red and blue one ) were recently seen in Manhattan along with a few other members of the team taking selfies before having to leave on a mission. We’re rooting for you, Champions!

What is Krakoa? There will be an academic lecture at New York University on Thursday with Dr. Kate Peterson and Dr. Edward Busha to discuss the political implications of a mutant nation on a social and economic level. Tickets are being sold in advance and at the door.

General Thaddeus Ross is currently traveling to Latveria to meet with their leader, Victor Von Doom. This coincides with meetings the United States Government are scheduled to have with Wakanda this week following the return of the perviously snapped King T’Challa.

tragic legend: tupac shakur - an analysis

“I’m not saying I’m gonna rule the world or I’m gonna change the world, but I guarantee you that I will spark the brain that will change the world. ” - Tupac Shakur

Never have truer words been spoken. In his short life, rapper Tupac Shakur was many things. Sinner. Saint. Angel. Devil. Prophet of rage and revolution. Tupac has always been and always will be an iconic character, a legend who marked, inspired and guided many generations. Half intellectual-half l’homme terrible, he strikes me as the thinking woman’s sex symbol, a comely Voltaire with a rock and roll edge and a hip-hop twist. On top of being one of the best rappers in history, he was an artist of many talents. Besides being an MC, he was also an actor, a poet, a philosopher, a lyricist and a political activist. My love for him not only stems from his fuck-you attitude and obvious good looks, but his intelligence and way with words was just mesmerizing. Bridging “thug life” with “fine art,” he always had a finger on the pulse of what was going on and made it real in his lyrics.

Tupac Shakur, according to astrotheme, was a Gemini sun and Aries moon (the moon is speculative). Born in in jail to a Black Panther mother, Tupac spent his childhood with his mother and his two half-siblings, always seeking shelter, in extreme poverty. As part of his education at the Baltimore School of the Arts, a young Tupac Shakur was immersed in the worlds of William Shakespeare, Robert Frost, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, and other poets who made a significant impact on the way aesthetics and rhythm are used in language. It is no surprise that Pac’s most enduring legacy involves his own prowess with words, and there is little doubt his entryway to rapping was his early introduction to poems. However, according to those who knew him best, his love for language developed well before his high-school years. He said it himself: if he’d lived longer, he would have become a politician. But in any case, he wrote very meaningful texts which bring up the issue of poverty, racism, gang wars… Issues that he condemned until his death. In “Changes” he talks about a society that never changes, and which is not ready to change, with so much poverty, murders and racism. The song shows that Tupac was some sort of a visionary, since the situation he described remains pretty much the same two decades later. Some remember him as a thug. Some remember the artist. Some remember his violent shooting death. I remember his life and I remember the man, the rebel with a cause.

the murder of Tupac Shakur

That fatal night in September of 1996, Shakur and music executive (with alleged gang ties) Marion “Suge” Knight attended a Mike Tyson boxing match. After the fight, Shakur, Knight and others were involved in a physical altercation in the lobby of a Las Vegas hotel, which was caught on surveillance camera. One of the victims of this brawl was revealed to be Davis’ nephew. Shortly after, Shakur and Knight left in a black BMW. Davis (a gangster who was the gang’s boss and “shot caller), along with his nephew and two other gang members, pulled up to Tupac’s vehicle in a white Cadillac and fired a barrage of shots, hitting Shakur four times and Knight once. Knight, the driver of the BMW, drove to a local hospital, where Shakur died of his injuries a week later. When police arrived and questioned Knight as to who could have shot them, he was uncooperative; that, along with other witnesses who adhered to the “stop snitchin” movement, the case went cold for the next 30 years. Davis’ nephew (one of the victims of the casino brawl and the alleged triggerman) was killed a year later, the other two involved were later killed as well, leaving Davis the sole surviving accomplice to the crime.

UPDATE: On September 29, 2023, an arrest was made in Las Vegas, NV in connection with the now 30-year-old murder mystery. After bragging in YouTube videos and confessing in a 2019 memoir about his connection to the killing, Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a known gang leader, was finally charged with Tupac’s murder.

Next week, I’ll focus on another Gemini, the most famous tragic blonde of all and one of my greatest inspirations, Marilyn Monroe.

Overall personality snapshot: Hate motorcars or love them, there was something of the racing champion in him. He had speed, flair and a self-assertive pugnacity which was constantly jockeying for position. In him, nerves and adrenaline combined or conflicted. When he combined his intense willpower and convictions with his strong communicative ability and intelligent curiosity, he could become a great persuader and salesperson with a touch of poetry and a clear, inspired vision. Indeed he became a purposeful, ambitious intellectual. He expected to have his own way and was a natural leader and spokesperson in his chosen field. Indeed he was a whiz with words, wit, satire and pointed jokes, and could be a veritable escape-artist and rationalizer when it came to talking his way out of situations and arguing that black is white. He liked to travel, to be up-to-the-minute, on the move and on his toes. Twenty-four-hour rolling news and current-affairs programs were dreamed up for and by the likes of him. With his quick intelligence and enthusiasm he made a vivid speaker and inspiring teacher, though he got impatient with those less nimble-witted than himself.

He had the gifts of a formidable lawyer, a natural writer, broadcaster, politician or debater. In short, if he wasn’t an artist, then this would have been an ideal combination for any job where he had to think on his feet. Nonetheless he was probably at his best when he developed an area of expertise in which he could be an authority, for he needed to be his own person, to be able to say what he thought and not pull any punches. His eternal youth, explosive energy and exuberance was the envy of many. When it came to putting over his ideas on something in which he believed, your power-assisted words can hit the world like sustained gunfire. Yet for all his quickness, curiosity and with-it, streetwise dexterity, he had about him a certain naive, bright freshness and spontaneity, which no amount of negative experience could dull. He said what he saw, heard and thought, though seldom what he felt, for feelings were not his strong suit. Although he ‘felt strongly’, even passionately, about things, he didn’t empathize well with other people. He considered their problems and pains to be something they needed to sort out themselves, unless he happened to share their problems, in which case he could soon be mounting a one-man crusade with the assistance of his clear, incisive wit, passionate rhetoric and scathing indignation. His forthright, pugnacious approach and strongly held views made him a formidable adversary but can also made him, to his indignant surprise, some bitter enemies (unfortunately or him, fatal). Yet at the end of the day he shrugged this off with a witticism, for often humour and a good belly laugh was his best medicine.

Collecting knowledge and communicating played a great part in his life, because he needed mental stimulation. His clear logical mind loved to debate, although his opinions may be changeable. He was intensely curious and had good reasoning powers. He would’ve made for a successful businessman because he could be shrewd, determined and aggressive when necessary. When dealing with colleagues, he could place strong demands on them. He could be an intensely emotional person with extremely strong physical desires. He saw himself as a desirable person to the opposite sex. He needed to be loved, but he could also be extremely suspicious of other people and their motives. His perseverance was strong, but he also needed to learn moderation and not to over-rate his abilities or capacity for doing things. He may have been very interested in foreign names and places, and by anything mysterious. Traveling was one way that he satisfied his curiosity, whether in a physical sense, or by allowing his mind to travel through the medium of books and higher learning. Although he was an extremely creative person, he wasn’t as impressed by beauty as other people are. He could be quite stubborn and conservative in his outlook. His physical and practical affairs may have brought him many difficulties and challenges, and there were likely financial delays in the working side of his life. As a worker, he was methodical, controlled and very efficient. He postponed marrying until he felt he had reached a secure position in his life. Although he tended to be reserved and suspicious in emotional relationships, once he felt sure that he was loved, there is little that he wouldn’t do for his partner.

He belonged to a generation that brought unconventional attitudes to marriage and close emotional relationships, believing in the equality and freedom of both partners. Personal relationships were made and unmade fairly quickly. Civil rights were also an extremely important issue. As a member of this generation, he had some unusual artistic talents. His attitudes to law and justice may have been unconventional, although he still believed in the need for some form of law and order. At times, he may have felt pulled in two directions when it came to society’s needs and his needs as an individual. It was within relationships that he experienced turmoil and disruptions. His relationships with people holding authority over him also brought many disruptions. He was part of an optimistic and expansive generation with a naturally philosophical outlook and an interesting sense of humour, and although many of its members lack a certain amount of definition. He was good at inspiring others, and his radical and idealistic attitudes towards society, politics and spiritual values began to replace the chaos found in his past. His aim was a balance between earthly and spiritual values, materialism and spiritualism. He also loved adventure and experimentation. He had an expansive personality and promoted a new order. As a member of the Virgoan Pluto generation, he was inquisitive, assertive and zealous. The little details mattered to him; he belonged to a generation that wanted to save the world, but often got bogged down in the details and lost sight of the big picture. However, constant self-analysis, second-guessing and nitpicking often held him back from creating permanent changes.

Love/sex life: He was perhaps the least physical of all the Mars types and this could be either a blessing or a curse, depending upon one’s point of view. It was a blessing because it allowed him to play with sex without being burned by desire. He could be a very exhilarating lover—free-spirited, inventive and unconventional but he’d rarely be driven by the physical need for sex to do anything contrary to his own well-being. The fact that he treated sex as a toy sometimes made him appear cold and selfish though this was rarely the case. He enjoyed people a great deal and had a marvelous capacity for loving them. It’s just that there were so many. Intimacy and one-on-one bonding was his great challenge. In his mind sex was such as exhilarating and uplifting experience that the sex he had with his body often left him feeling cheated. And then there was all that emotional stuff. The fact that some people seemed to enjoy angst and complex emotional interplay never ceased to amaze him. He avoided these dramas as much as is possible. For him, love should be meeting of minds, the interweaving of beautiful ideas; and when this was done right the result could be the best kind of intimacy imaginable.

Tupac Shakur was born Lesane Parish Crooks in The Bronx, New York City on June 16, 1971 to Afeni Shakur, a member of the Black Panthers. Serving jail time on bombing charges while pregnant with Tupac, his mother faced a sentence of up to three years in prison. Acting as her own attorney, she won the verdict and was released one month before Tupac was born. At first opportunity, Afeni had Tupac’s birth certificate changed to reflect his real name, Tupac Amaru, which means “royal serpent” and was the name of an Inca leader and warrior who came to power in 1570. Shakur said, “I never knew where my father was or who my father was for sure.” His godfather, Geronimo Pratt, was also a high-ranking Panther. His step-father, Mutulu, was a drug dealer who, according to Shakur, was rarely present to give him the discipline he needed. Much of Tupac’s upbringing revolved around the Black Panther philosophy. Impoverished during most of his childhood, Tupac, with his mother and half-sister, Sekyiwa (pronounced Setchua), moved between homeless shelters and cheap accommodations around New York City. As a result, he retained few friends and relied on writing poetry and diary entries to keep himself busy. At the age of 12, Shakur joined a Harlem theatre group and acted as Travis in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun.

In 1986 Tupac’s mother brought him and his sister to live in Baltimore, Maryland. The Shakurs lived on Greenmount Ave. in East Baltimore. There, Tupac was disliked because of his looks, name, and lack of trendy clothing. He attended Roland Park Middle School, then spent his freshman year at Paul Lawrence Dunbar High. For his sophomore year Tupac was accepted to the Baltimore School for the Arts. He enjoyed his classes there, studying theater, ballet, and other arts. It was during this time that Shakur became close friends with another student named Jada Pinkett (later Jada Pinkett Smith). Even at this young age, Shakur was outspoken on the subject of racial equality. His teachers remembered him as being a very gifted student. He was an avid reader, delving into books on eastern religions, and even entire encyclopedia sets. Hiding his love of literature from his peers, he gained the respect of his peers by acting like a tough guy. Shakur composed his first rap in Baltimore under the name “MC New York”. The song was about gun control and was inspired by the fatal shooting of one of his close friends.

Two years later, a drug-addicted Afeni was having trouble finding work (her Panther past did not help, either). She uprooted the family again and brought Tupac and Sekyiwa to live with a family friend in Marin City, California. Tupac described this move from Baltimore and the arts school as “where I got off track”. He showed contempt for law enforcement, being hassled occasionally for playing music loudly. In August of 1988, Shakur’s stepfather Mutulu was sentenced to sixty years in prison for armed robbery after being on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list for several years. Shakur soon moved in with a neighbor and started selling drugs on the street, but also made friends who helped spark his interest in rap music. One of these was Ray Luv, and with a mutual friend named DJ Dize (Dizz-ee), they started a rap group called Strictly Dope. Their recordings were later released in 2001 under the name Tupac Shakur: The Lost Tapes. Their neighborhood performances brought Tupac enough acclaim to land an audition with Shock G of Digital Underground.

In 1990, Shakur joined as a roadie and dancer for Digital Underground. His early lyrics were unremarkable, and he was viewed ambivalently for his tendency to act like a diva and for his occasionally violent personality. On a song for the Nothing But Trouble movie soundtrack, Same Song, Tupac was given his first opportunity to rap on a big-time record. As a child, Tupac had dreamed of becoming a Shakespearean actor. Though he never achieved this, he did become a respected actor, drawing from his theater roots. He starred in Juice in 1991 to critical acclaim, hailed by Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers as “The film’s most magnetic figure.” He went on to star in Poetic Justice, Above the Rim, Gridlock’d, Bullet, and Gang Related. In 1991, Tupac had trouble shopping his solo-debut, 2Pacalypse Now. Eventually, Interscope records agreed to distribute the record; one can credit executives Ted Field and Tom Whally for giving Tupac the chance. Although produced with the help of his Digital Underground crew, the intent of the album was to showcase his individual talent. While Shakur claimed his album was aimed at the problems facing young black males, it was also filled with images of violence by and against police. 2Pacalypse Now quickly attracted public criticism, especially after a young man who killed a Texas Trooper claimed he was inspired by the album. Former Vice President Dan Quayle, as part of his zealous crusade for morality, publicly denounced the album as having “no place in our society”. The album did not do as well as Tupac had hoped on the charts, sparking no number one hits. In confidence, Shakur told Shock G that he wanted Shock to pick the beats. While Shakur was a talented rapper, producing was not his forte. He wrote almost all of his lyrics in his songs by himself.

His second CD, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., was heavily produced by Stretch and the Live Squad, and spurred two number one hits: the emotional Keep Ya Head Up and the playful I Get Around. Along with Shakur’s rise to fame came a series of altercations with the law that further complicated his public image. Before he started his recording career, Tupac had no criminal record. In Oakland in October of 1991, Tupac was stopped by two officers for allegedly jaywalking. When he told the police “fuck y’all,” he was choked, beaten, and had his head smashed on the pavement. He subsequently raised a ten million dollar lawsuit against the Oakland police department, which was eventually settled for $42,000. In October 1993, Shakur came upon two off-duty police officers whom he perceived as harassing a black motorist on the side of the road in Atlanta. Shakur got into a fight with them and shot both officers (one in the leg, one in the buttocks). He faced serious charges until it was discovered that both officers were intoxicated during the incident and were using weapons stolen out of an evidence locker. The charges against Shakur were dismissed.

In late 1993, he formed the group Thug Life with a few of his friends, including Big Syke, Macadoshis, his step-brother Mopreme, and Rated R. The group released their first album Thug Life: Volume 1 on Interscope in 1994 which, despite its hardcore content, still managed to go Gold. The group subsequently disbanded after Shakur’s release from prison. In December 1993, Shakur was charged with sexually abusing a woman in his hotel room. According to his account, he met a female fan at a club, Nell’s, who was described to him as wanting to “more than meet [him]”. She allegedly gave him oral sex on the dance floor before Shakur took her back to his hotel room. The next night, she visited him before he was set to do a show and was giving him a massage in a hotel room. Some friends who were with him that night interrupted the couple, wanting to enjoy the woman’s attentions themselves. Shakur claimed to have left the room disgusted and went to take a nap. The girl, disagreeing with his account, accused him of encouraging the three men, pulling her hair, and sodomy. On February 7, 1995, Shakur was sentenced to four and a half years in prison for rape, though he vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

Shortly before his verdict was announced, Shakur was shot five times in an apparent robbery attempt outside a New York music studio. Tupac recalled the circumstances shortly afterwards in an interview with Vibe magazine. He was with his close friend Stretch, manager Freddie Moore, and another friend on the night of November 30, 1994. They arrived at a studio so Shakur could do some recordings for an acquaintance, Booker, whom he didn’t quite trust. When they got to the studio, Tupac was suspicious of two black men in their thirties, both dressed in army fatigues, because neither of them seemed to acknowledge his presence. He noted that he was less wary of them than he should have been because he “had just finished smoking chronic”. Shakur simply assumed they must be security for The Notorious B.I.G. (aka Biggie), whom he was still friends with at the time. The two men, whom Shakur described as looking like they were from New York, came at him with identical 9mm handguns, and forced him and his friends to the floor. Their aggression was focused almost exclusively on Tupac, although they did threaten to shoot Stretch as well. They forced everybody to lie on the floor, but Tupac remained standing. He later said he had frozen. They demanded he hand over his jewelry, which he refused to do. After grabbing at one of the armed men, Tupac was shot in the leg, through his scrotum. He fell to the floor, and was shot a further 4 times, which he later claimed not to have realized; he believed he was being kicked & that his head was being beaten upon the floor. He recalled seeing white light, but never believed he could die. He lay silent, pretending to be dead. He was shot 5 times in total and robbed of the gold jewelry he was wearing, worth over forty thousand dollars.

Upon regaining consciousness, he entered the elevator and went upstairs to safety, where his then-friends Biggie, Puffy, Little Caesar, and others were waiting. Shakur described his friends as acting very strangely, almost surprised at his being alive. His first words after realizing how severe his wounds were, having been shot in the head and the scrotum, were “Oh, shit. Roll me some weed. Call my mom and tell her I’ve been shot.” He was also very surprised that none of his other friends, who were also wearing jewelry weren’t robbed. He survived, and left the hospital a day after, against doctor’s orders because he was feeling harassed by phone calls and the doctors. He showed up in court just few days afterwards in a wheelchair to face his verdict in the sexual assault case. Shakur began serving his prison sentence at Clinton Correctional Facility later that February. Soon after, his multi-platinum album, Me Against the World, was released. Shakur has the distinction of being the only artist with an album at number one on the charts while serving a prison sentence. From jail, he married his long-time girlfriend, Keisha Morris. He also had time to pursue reading, delving into the works of Niccolò Machiavelli, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and even wrote a screenplay titled “Live 2 Tell” while incarcerated. In September, after almost eight months in prison, Shakur was released on parole largely due to the help of Suge Knight, the head of Death Row Records. Suge posted a $1.4 million bail for Shakur, and in exchange Shakur was obliged to release three albums under Death Row. The singer was unrepentant and grew even more embittered against the authorities, which showed in his music. Immediately after his release from prison, Tupac Shakur began work on his next album. In February 1996, he released his fourth solo album, All Eyez on Me.The album was the first (and second) of three albums that Tupac promised for Death Row Records in exchange for Suge Knight bailing him out of jail. It subsequently went on to sell more than nine million copies and is considered by many to be among the best albums in the genre. He continued his recordings, despite the impending troubles at Death Row as Dr. Dre left his post as house producer and Suge Knight became more involved in illegal activities. At the time that Tupac died, there were hundreds of unreleased Death-Row Era tracks. Most of these have been released on posthumous albums such as Better Dayz and Until the End of Time. There are still several tracks that remain unreleased from the Death Row Era. Tupac also was in the process of recording an album with the Boot Camp Clik and their label, Duck Down Records both New York based, entitled “One Nation”. This was to help bring closure to the East-West feud by bringing together what Tupac thought were the best rappers from both coasts. This remains unreleased. At the time of his death, Tupac was also building on his acting career. John Singleton wrote the film Baby Boy with Shakur in mind for the leading role, but Shakur died before it was made. It was eventually filmed with Tyrese Gibson in his place and released in 2001, five years after Shakur’s death. He had also been slated to star in the Hughes brothers’ Menace II Society, but was replaced by Larenz Tate after assaulting the directors. During his life, Shakur had a number of rivals. Most famous of all is probably his rivalry with The Notorious B.I.G. and his cohorts at Bad Boy Records. The two were originally close friends when Biggie was still largely unknown. After the robbery, though, Shakur publicly accused Biggie, Puff Daddy, and Andre Harrell of having previously known that his attempted murder would take place. While Shakur was in jail, he was incensed by Biggie and Puffy’s derogatory remarks about him in Vibe Magazine. After all his legal troubles, he claimed he “wanted to get out the [rap] game”, but Biggie’s remarks spurred him to come back.

As part of the ongoing feud between Shakur and his former friend Biggie, Shakur bragged about having slept with Biggie’s estranged wife, Faith Evans, in “Hit ‘Em Up”, although Faith Evans denied the affair. Suge Knight vocalized the resentment between the Death Row and Bad Boy labels at an awards ceremony, saying “If anyone wants to come to a record company where they don’t want the executive producer dancing, singing all up in the videos come to Death Row.” In addition to his enemies at Bad Boy Records, Shakur accused his former friend Stretch (real name Randy Walker who was present at the shooting) of having “switched-sides” to the Bad Boy camp. On November 30, 1995, exactly one year after the shooting of Shakur in New York, Walker was gunned down in Queens, New York. Shakur also had some disputes with Dr. Dre, who was the in-house producer for Death Row. He claimed that Dre did nothing at Death Row and was taking credit for other people’s work. Shakur got angry when Dre refused to show up and testify in defense of his friend, Snoop Doggy Dogg, in a murder trial. In addition, Shakur made hints in songs that he thought Dre was a homosexual, and Suge Knight concurred in the Tupac Shakur: Thug Immortal documentary.

There was also some animosity between Tupac and others. Nas (who is said to have met up with Shakur and ended the animosity just three days before his fatal shooting in Las Vegas) and Jay-Z were both attacked in the 7 Day Theory album. Shakur also mocked Mobb Deep for snubbing him at a concert and commented on the illness that one member suffered from in the controversial track Hit ‘Em Up, remarking, “Don’t one of you niggas got sickle cell or something?”. After Shakur’s death, Mobb Deep changed tack and apparently showed respect for him. While filming Poetic Justice with Janet Jackson, he created quite a stir when he refused to take an AIDS test as a prerequisite for a love scene with Jackson. Shakur stated that other men had love scenes with Jackson on stage before without taking a test, and he didn’t feel it necessary. He also stated that if they were going to have sex in the scene he would have taken the test. It is unknown whether she took offense but she stopped talking to him immediately after the filming was completed. In a later interview, Shakur said that he had met Jackson during an immature time of his life, and hoped that he could one day make amends with her. Shakur also frequently insulted popular New York underground rapper Chino XL, Lil Kim, Junior Mafia and other artists of Bad Boy Records, of which the Notorious B.I.G. was a member. Shakur was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 7, 1996 after attending the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon. He died in the University Medical Center hospital six days later from the four gunshot wounds.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and Compton police, although they never officially solved the case, concluded that Shakur was shot by Southside Crips after the Tyson fight. Hours before the shooting, Tupac had been involved in a fight in the lobby of the MGM Hotel after the Tyson-Seldon fight. Shakur started the fight when he noticed 21-year-old “Baby Lane” Anderson, who had beaten up one of his bodyguards in a shopping mall a few weeks earlier, lingering nearby. Anderson and others were interviewed by police later in connection with the murder, though no suspects were ever publicly named. Shakur and the crew at Death Row generally depended on members of the Bloods gang for security, while Biggie and the Bad Boy Crew depended on Crips members for security when visiting California. An investigation by the Las Vegas Times, while not naming its gang-member sources, stated that Biggie (who was also in town for the fight) offered to pay the Crips in exchange for Shakur’s death. It was noted by the Compton Gang Unit that the Crips were bragging about the killing soon after returning to Compton. Compton Police were disappointed with the lack of initiative showed by Las Vegas police in pursuing the killing.

After the fight with Anderson, Tupac left the MGM Hotel, went to the hotel with his fiance, Kidada Jones. Then, he met up with Suge to go to Death Row’s Club 662 in Las Vegas. The two drove together in Suge’s 1996 black BMW sedan e38 7-series, part of a larger convoy of cars including some of Shakur’s friends, the Outlawz, and bodyguards. Tupac was not wearing a bulletproof vest that night, even though Death Row had provided him with one. At 11:15 P.M., Suge’s car stopped at an intersection on East Flamingo Road. A white Cadillac was seen pulling up to the passenger side of the car, and firing thirteen rounds into the car as Tupac attempted to climb to safety in the back seat. Tupac was hit four times, twice in the chest, and in his arm and thigh, while Suge was scratched by a piece of flying glass (while later claiming in an interview he had a bullet stuck in his head). Tupac then went on to live off of life support for 7 days and his mother finally had the plugs pulled on September 13, 1996 at 4:03 PM. After his death, Shakur was cremated, and his mother reportedly spread his ashes in L.A. saying that Tupac would want to be in the city he loved best. (x)
