i’ve been working on this since january. i’m both so fucking glad it’s done and also a little bit disappointed with it. i made my own book cloth and you can see where the heat n bond has seeped through the cloth bc it go too hot, the small spines i really should have thought of while making the typesets, and should’ve upped the font size to make it larger. i think i was so focused on finishing it that i maybe got a little lost in the details u know?

but anyway! i wanted to try my hand at the inspired by clothbound classics covers, and i’m pretty satisfied with how that came out! it was a lot of fun to decorate these with their charms on the bookmarks (my fav is the little tiny perfume on teenage wasteland. like how cute!! and tiny!!) and to try not to get too caught up in reading when i was editing.

i love all of these stories so much and i’m so excited to have made them all into physical books!

Bound: Lessons in Grace and Decorum by GallaPlacidia

I’m so close to finishing this project! Technically there are two more fics but I think I’m just going to do one more (Exposure) and not the last one (Code Name L) because it just didn’t grab me like the rest. But we’ll see how my brain decides to cope with that.

There are a couple of things that make this bind different: 1. I neglected to make the titles for this book when I made the rest and I no longer have any of the HTV I used, so this one is a bit more gold. No biggie, it’s not super noticeable. And 2. it’s printed on a slightly heavier weight paper in a slightly creamy color. This paper, y’all. It’s gorgeous. It’s the 26lb warm white from Church Paper and I want to roll around in it, it’s so lovely, but I’d probably end up with a bunch of paper cuts so better not.

My first fanbinding project!

Obviously it’s not perfect. Far from it. But I’m thrilled nonetheless. It looks like a real book! Granted, one that was splattered by glue and stored in a humid room, maybe, but still! A real book that was spattered by glue and stored in a humid room!

Lessons for next time: use the right kind of glue and/or less of it. Keep the workspace neat (ahem, glue-free). Ok, mostly my lessons involve glue.

I also made a book press out of two wood plaques from the craft store and some carriage bolts and wingnuts. Super easy and cost under $10!

Fic: Ship of Theseus by Gallaplacidia (fic is no longer on ao3, but a link to an archive of her work can be found here.) My podfic of it.

Fonts used: Garamond for the text, Frontage for the cover. I designed it using InDesign. Printing it properly involved a lot of cursing and googling.

The cover is canvas from Joann's, backed with lightweight fusible interfacing. I got the chipboard from a craft store. The paper used is cheap stuff I had on hand. I was trying to make this without spending any money, but my wallet laughed at that. At least now I have enough supplies to make a few more without buying anything.

My next project is already in the design stage. It's a much longer fic, but as it will be a gift for the author, that's all I can say now.

I chose this fic primarily because it's short because I thought that might be easier, but aside from the amount of time it took to sew the signatures together (negligible) I don't think it made a difference. I suppose the typesetting took less time as well.

Anyway, this was fun! On to the next!

A Gallaplacidia Anthology

i had wanted to bind something for the lovely nim of @theonetruenim, also of nimmening fame, and thankfully nimmtro of chaos bindery came through for me and gave me a couple of suggestions of what to bind! the fics have been deleted off AO3, but can be found here.

I opted for my two favourite galla fics - ship of theseus and the bucket list and decided i wanted to use greek themes as the design elements for the bind. I also was in the process of picking up Affinity Publisher during this, so I am very grateful to @pleasantboatpress who basically handheld me through most of the typesetting process as i stumbled around fucked around and found out.

@celestial-sphere-press, @pleasantboatpress and @butterfingersbookbinding also basically gave me a ton of amazing design suggestions and talked me down many ledges as i was making this book because this was my first millimeter binding and OH BOY. i fucked that up from the get go because I SLATHERED THE WHOLE THING WITH GLUE AND WENT OH FUCK CAN I TAKE THAT BACK JESUS NO-

the glue eraser was my best friend for this bind. I have zero regrets.

i had wanted to achieve an ancient greek pottery look to my design and hence i used a black bookcloth (unknown source, probably hollanders) with duo scotch. i hadn't initially planned the greek design trim but because of fuck ups from the layering of the cloth (i have aphantasia so theoretical planning and design is challenging and i simply cannot envision shit until its done and THEN ITS TOO LATE) i had to put a layer of HTV around to hide the unsightly fabric lines which weren't cut straight.

Endpapers are from an etsy shop with black and gold marbled paper and i did the endbands in gold, black and bronze silk.

Ultimately I really like where the design went, and though I over-pressed the HTV a little, i think it came out really well and I was really happy to be able to give this book away, especially to another bookbinder (which is always very nerve wracking, a little like you're unveiling a part of your soul and you're worried you'll be found lacking).

It seemed like a good surprise and thank fuck I gave her a book because she cut me papers as a surprise gift (fuck THANK YOU NIM I LOVE THEM) and it was such a lovely meeting with the cali renegades.

Anyway I'll be slowly revealing the books i've done over the last month - FFWAD is coming up and i am super excited for it! bookbinding has slowed a little but i am hoping to get back into the thick of things soon.

Did you see the update from GallaPlacidia (her email newsletter) that she’s deleting all her fics and podfics 10/1? I mostly most Good Omens stuff so I doubt my followers have read her stuff. I just want to pass along the word so people could download if they want to save her works. They’re all so good! I’ve always loved your posts and you seem to have a wide audience so figured I’d reach out to you, if you’d like to share the info. And if anyone has suggestions on how to save her podfics that would be helpful! I listen to them on my phone and have no idea how to download them. 🤪

Oh no, that’s heartbreaking news! I don’t receive her newsletter so I had no idea. How sad, I know lots of people love her work and will be truly devastated 😰😰 thanks for reaching out and sharing this, I am definitely saving my favourites and I hope everyone has the chance to do the same. Renegade Winter Exchange 2022, part 1/2: Ship of Theseus by GallaPlacidia for @queercore-curriculum

When Harry gets amnesia and forgets he and Draco were ever married, he refuses treatment to remember.

I was incredibly honoured, excited, and intimidated to be matched with @queercore-curriculum for the Renegade winter exchange. They were one of the original impetuses for me to begin bookbinding — their gorgeous longstitch binds of some incredible Drarry fics have been so inspiring & their bookshelf photos make me want to cry with envy. @queercore-curriculum makes graceful and restrained binds, using color choice and stitching patterns carry the weight of the fic, instead of heavily-illustrated covers. I wanted to bind this fic to fit in with the other books on their shelf.

The first fic I bound them was GallaPlacidia’s Ship of Theseus. This is a gorgeous fic about forgiveness and falling in love and building a home together. One of the central motifs of the story is the garden that Draco grew at their shared cottage, and specifically the calla lilies in it. I designed a stitching pattern that evokes a more organic, floral shape than the criss-cross pattern I’ve tried before, and used white, buttercup, and emerald green thread stitched through a spine of dark grey bookcloth. I wanted the bind to be hopeful, to convey that spring was coming through the winter, just like in the fic. I then printed Gustav Klimt’s Bauerngarten (1907), which is in the public domain here, as joyful endpapers. 

The floral motif carries through the typeset: California poppies as my bindery logo, a lily as the ornament to start the fic, and a small flower ornament as scene dividers, but I had to diverge for the title page. In the fic, when Harry proposes:

“I changed it,” said Harry. Draco brought it closer to his face, and saw that in the gold there were fine engravings. A ship in a full sail, a ship in a state of decay, a ship that had been rebuilt, slightly different. A repeating cycle.

I had to try to illustrate this because, really, I was tearing up when I got to that line. I’m not 100% happy with the final result (would probably rotate it to have a fully-built ship at the ‘top’ of the circle to make it more legible), but I am happy to include this part of the story on the title spread.

Some notes on process: I always make a ‘test book’ that I keep before sending out a copy to someone else—this is to make sure everything works well & looks good together (which you can see in the photos). Happy to answer any questions about process improvements between test & final copy, or chat about this stitching pattern!

This is also my first time making a quarto letter book. I don’t actually love the size; the page is a bit square for me. Next time for a shorter fic, I’m going to experiment with a quarto legal book or A6 size.

Working on a non-GallaPlacidia fic next, then will add another to this series.

I like how the inside is slightly different for each one but the outsides look the same. It’s a good way to experiment with different typesetting.

Body font is Corundum Text, chapter headers are in Lemon/Milk. Harry's letters are in Felt Tip Woman, and Draco's are in Viktorie. Did I spend more time picking a font for Draco than anything else? Possibly.

I recorded this one for a podfic last year, so it holds a special place in my heart.

I just finished In Memoriam after starting it less than 24 hours ago. My heart is bleeding. The general horror was so numbing it took me a while after finishing before I could cry about it. But the tenderness was never lost throughout. I loved it.
