CHICANO ART MOVEMENT visits: Raul Baltazar 2024
Tumblr media
(Announcement sandwich board of “Welcome to the Bunny House” -Raul Baltazar)
CAM:
The street team crew headed over to Chapman University’s Guggenheim Gallery to catch the last days of Raul Baltazar's “Welcome to the Bunny House.” This collection of paintings by Los Angeles-based artists were created between 2020 and 2024.
Tumblr media
(Foreground: “La Bota (The Boot)” - mixed media, 2024; right wall: “Glass House” - acrylic on canvas, 2023; left wall: “Huitzilopochtli (Sun God at war with stars and moon to protect his mother Coatlicue) - acrylic on canvas, 2020)
The exhibition title is in relation to Baltazar’s former abode located in Echo Park which was “a sanctuary where art, spirit and levity converged, inviting participants to contemplate the transformative potential inherent in embracing indigenous roots and finding solace through creative expression” that influenced “Baltazar’s distinctive painting style and affirming his paintings as extension of his social practice.”
Tumblr media
(“El Nagual (Tonal Animal Within)” - acrylic on canvas, 2021)
After crossing the entrance, Baltazar’s art captured Anita’s attention and enveloped her in the abstract expressionism style. Each work was created with details and filled with movement.
Tumblr media
(“F/E (Forever)” - acrylic on canvas, 2024)
And Baltazar placed various elements of the leporidae animal family in specific locations within the Guggenheim Gallery walls.
Tumblr media
(“Portrait of a Young Artist with T7” - mixed medium sculpture, 2024)
This is the portrait that I contemplated on the most. As a mixed piece, it broke the dimensional plane via its large, fuzzy nose and exaggerated whiskers which were outlandish and intriguing. The exhibition dates for this show were from January 31, 2024 to March 15, 2024 at the Guggenheim Gallery on the Chapman University campus in Orange, California.

Gallery Visit
6-02-24, Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts
I visited the RAH gallery in Dublin during some time away, and among all of the artists on display, two really spoke out to me; Dominique Crowley and John Kindness.
Crowley's paintings were interesting to me through color and composition. Written on the RAH website referring to his collection there at the moment, "Crowley’s new body of work has been informed by researching Renaissance and Enlightenment descriptions of the natural world". I found this to be inspiring to my project in the sense that we are both being inspired by the natural world, however vague the term 'world' may apply to my work. Part of his inspiration comes from the extensive writings of Ulisse Aldrovandi, an Italian scientist.

24TH BIENNALE OF SYDNEY ‘Ten Thousand Sun’ at White Bay Power station.
Only when you walk in you can feel the super invincible shock.!?
Collection of history and industry, artificial, upheaval, environment, destruction, communication, noise, self, community, silence, suppression⋯⋯
A festival and deep conversation among the whole world, there are so many video based works and I really really impressed.
I was so inspired by the Japanese work by group artists called DUMB TYPE… When I sat down, my attention was completely focussed on the screen and sound and yes this is my favourite work among whole exhibition.

This piece was the first piece in the exhibition, and one of the biggest physical pieces. It reminds me of the screensaver on iMacs when they have gone to sleep. I really like how the digital is projected onto a canvas instead of just straight onto the exhibition wall, it adds a lot more proffesionalism to the work I think, and allows the piece to keep to a white background instead of having to use the beige of the venue.
I went on Saturday the 15th, alone, and the exhibition had about 6 other visitors, 2 of which were children who weren't particularly happy to be there so they did interupt some of the sound piece! Also meant I didn't see the live performance that is listed on the website.
The exhibition space is not a white cube space, it is rather rough with some walls very white and bare with others being very exposed concrete or brick but all work well with each other, nothing looks out of place. I likethe contrasts this space offers, and Mathinson used it very minimalisitcally. Compared to the white cube space upstairs where another exhibition is positioned this space has a lot more personailty.
No piece is overcrowded, and each gets its own space to breathe, everything feels very ordered and mathmatically placed. The space has been equally divided for each piece, all cassettes and photographs presented are routinely placed into a neat pattern. The large, old space furthermore allowed the sound being played to echo and reverberate throughout the space, adding to its impact.

This isn't normally the kind of art I normally go and see, I'm much more into digital, environment & game art and it wasn't something I was particuarly blown away by. In my opinion it felt slightly sterile and I don't think I completely understood the concept or why everything was placed together. My favourite piece was this pen sketch below. I also liked the idea of live capturing sound from New Cross Road.
Tumblr media
I did feel that it would have been nice to have explainations of what all the pieces were or how they related to each other as I wasn't completely sure what everything was within the exhibition space, such as next to them on the wall or more about invidual pieces on the hand out given to help those that are slightly confused (me) !
The space was quite small and I feel it could have been utilised more, as one big room was filled with just one TV screen when it could have taken a smaller space I feel, but that would have also required there to be more content to fill the extra space, which may not of existed. And it's only a solo exhibition, not a group one, but also does add to the minimalism that was present in everything else.

everyone keeps talking about the lgbt representation in ted lasso, but personally the most represented i have felt so far is that scene where the gang is discussing what to do on their wild all-night-long amsterdam bender, and trent crimm puts up a hand and hopefully asks if they can go to a late-night museum opening

6-02-24, RAH, Part 2
The second artist who's work particularly struck me during this gallery visit was John Kindness. In his book, 'The Odyssey', Patrick T. Murphy says that Kindness has an "insistence on a wide vocabulary of styles and methods to create his art", which is evident in the multitudes of disciplines I saw in Kindness' display. He is an admirable artist for having such range and ability to explore his theme in so many different ways. From mosaic, to gouache, to porcelain and even boat oars, he reaches a multitude of media in that exhibition.
Two things really struck me when I was at the gallery, the first being a subtle but sharp sense of humour in Kindness' work. In the first image that follows is a photo of ceramic potato chip bags that say 'Poseidons, Doomed Sailors', imitating a brand name and food product line. The second and third images are photos of 'Death of the Suitors', the second photo being a blown up image of a section in the middle-right of the painting that reads 'Fuck-ing-Hell' in a meat/bacon-looking substance on skewers. The last image is a photo of 'Telemachus's Old Toy: Dad', from the Greek mythology story that Telemachus and his father, Odysseus, killed the suitors of Telemachus' mother and Odysseus' wife upon returning from war in Troy. Written by Robert McDowell in Kindness' book, John Kindness is 'never without a compelling sense of humorous irony and paradox', which I whole-heartedly agree with.
The sly humour in all of these are fantastic to me. My 'Disrupt' project featured a type of humour that I could only hope was paralleled to the whiplash reaction one experiences when admiring Kindness' artwork about an ancient mythology with such niche and slapstick humour. I was left the exhibit wondering if I could still incorporate this element into the current Movement project.

The second thing that occurred to me in Kindness' artwork is the cultural influences. This exhibition is very obviously centred around the theme of Greek mythology and Kindness' influence from James Joyce's 'Ulysses', it is prevalent in almost every single piece in the room. Upon getting a closer look at the collection, I began to see influences from elsewhere in the world. He uses contemporary practice to discuss traditional themes, which I think is a beautiful combination in his case.
This painting, 'Penelope & Telemachus', instantly struck me as having a resemblance to Egyptian relief wall paintings. The layers of figures in the background, the flat painting technique, the way the animals and people are posed all screamed an ancient Egyptian inspiration to me.
