Background:
I actually have a degree in 3D and 2D animation from on the the top art schools in the USA. However, I really didn't learn much about drawing in school. I learn more about 3D/2D programs and how the 3D animation industry works. I learned how to draw/paint mostly on my own.
I started out as a digital artist and still am a digital artist. It not so much the medium in which one draws on but what one is learning how to draw. Much like music - doesn't matter which instrument one is learning how to play, one needs to learn their scales. In art those "scales" are learning anatomy (which nobody learns), color theory (which is my pride and joy), perspective (super hard), gesture and form (super fun once you get it).
Remember, everyone learns differently and at their own speed. Find what makes you want to learn and a fun way to learn for you. Hope this helps! Best of luck on your art journey.

Marina Abramović - Artist Study
Photos from Rhythm 0, a famous 6 hour-long performance art piece done by Marina Abramović in which she lay out a table of 72 items and instruments and stood to let her audience to whatever they wanted to her, with or without said instruments.
Tumblr media
A rose, honey, and perfume sat on the same table as scissors, a scalpel, a gun and a bullet. Beginning tamely, the audience offered her a rose or a kiss on the cheek. By the third hour, her clothes were all cut off, and her neck was cut so that someone might drink her blood. This was the audiences' reaction to her performance, an escalation of audacity and confidence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rhythm 0 is a prime example of an interesting reaction to art, and one that I find particularly inspiring. This form of reaction is inflicted, and I would focus on that idea.

I need some help with an artwork about Nienna!
I'm in the research stage and I don't want to reveal too much yet, except that it's not going to be a painting. So the help I need is this: Please, if you have ever had any thoughts about Nienna, like what she means to you, emotions you had related to her, experiences, sounds, textures, things... that made you think of her, can you please let me know?
The more detailed and personal the better (but please take care of yourself and only share what you want to share). You can comment here or send me a message or an anonymous ask which I won't share but it's an option to message me anonymously if you prefer that.
If you feel uncomfortable at any point about having shared something, just let me know and I will remove that information from the research. In any case, any of the things that have been shared will be anonymous in the artwork and cannot be traced back to you.
Thanks so much in advance!

Disrupt animation research
As part of our animation workshop we were shown loads of different types of animation by different artists. I’m documenting the ones I found most interested and related to my work here.
Caroline Leaf
The first would be an animation by Caroline Leaf called The Street, the style of this animation really interested me and the smooth almost watery movement of the characters and the paint feels perfect for the idea i had in mind for this workshop, I’ll attach a short screen recording so you get the gist of it.
Tomas Mankovsky
Another animation I looked at was “Sorry I’m Late” created at Rocketboom studios which involves really interesting object animation as well a pixilation. The video was a stop motion of a man running on a ground of clothes and encountering different obstacles. I found this animation really interesting as the person in the animation was still and it was the ground of clothes that was moving to create a running effect. I also think this could be an interesting route to try as it would connect with my previous use of clothing disrupting the body. Linking the video below for anyone interested.

Some Moleskine Volants and Cahiers. I used these for food tracking and as sketchbooks while I did my fine art degree. It was fun to flip through these and see what interested me at the time.
Artworks below are Rothko and Pollock, brain images are scanned from an anatomy textbook I don’t think I have anymore.

op of that dagoth post—- this is what i get for taking quotes off tumblr instead of reading the source material. i’m really interested tho, which of those quotes is about a dictatorship? it’s interesting that i read obsessive love into it instead. something something capitalism breeds resent breeds obsession
Hi! I really loved that post. The book in question is The Carnivorous Lamb by Agustín Gómez-Arcos, a queer man who was a self-exile in the Franco dictatorship in Spain. Find my post about it here <3

Art research stuff for uni!! Basically trying to replicate the Pokémon art style using Arina. Simplified and exaggerated parts of her design to make things feel more like the style and for my first pass I think it came out pretty good.
Tumblr media
I also came up with some sketches if she was gonna have some official art drawn of her and wanted to show her personality with it. I’m liking the clumsy running one the best atm :]

You can also have my silly research notes and observations as a treat <333

Okay. Zip is still hard. I want to give him pizzazz. Much like hum and Xolo. The only problem is that the depictions of the gods that are related to crocodiles are not that fun.
zipacna depictions and their brother cabrakan are very hard to find references for. And I don't mean references entirely. I mean proper historic depictions. A lot of them are worn. Many of them are pencil sketches of the stones of the twin heroes story. Although it is really hard to differentiate which brother is who. cabrakan has a lot more media representation but that is creatively free. Sorry don't wish to use those depictions as reference. So I'm stuck with this one media depiction that is so lackluster it barely gives any detail, and a bunch of pencil sketches of stones that I cannot tell who or what God is in them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a wishful chance I looked at the other God that was a runner-up for Zip's name. Cipactli. They have a lot more representation due to their story being Aztec and therefore more fresh in the history books. Unfortunately much like the Earth Brothers their depictions are simplistic. They have a little bit more color, again due to having a pressure depiction in the timeline of history. But it's not much more than a spiky red crocodile. There isn't any fantasmic interesting features. Just crocodile with skirt and necklace. Cipactli of course having teeth everywhere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am at a loss of how to give Zip an intriguing design. I could look at general Aztec and Mayan clothing but that feels lackluster. There are of course other gods I could take from. There is of course Quetzalcoatl. God of arts and crafts and a bunch of other things due to how ancient they are. Attempting to look up gods that relate to lizards is testy. For some reason there's a coyote trickster god That keeps popping up. Some sort of creation deity that also pops up and only has one lizard depiction. There's a lot about a day that they worship lizards but no god associated. There is not a lot of interesting depictions when it comes to reptiles unfortunately unless it is the flying serpent.

Hey! It's Goldfish, the, uh, unpaid intern. Animating the doctor can sometimes be... difficult, so I've set out to do some research on perspective and boxes. Simple, yes, I know, but they don't not pay me the big bucks for nothing!

Research and Exploration sketchbook pages on the sheep bones, spiderwebs, and teeth/dentures. This was a visual response to the different horror-inspired sources I've been researching this term. As a part of this research, I was hoping to use the sheep teeth moulds I made in the clay workshop, however I haven't been able to retrieve them from the kiln yet. Texture was a key inspiration in this study, regardless.

Marlene Dumas
(artist research)
Sylvia recommended I have a look at the work of this artist.
She created a series of portraits, where she uses the wet on wet technique, which makes the paint blow out in areas. I find this technique to be very interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her portraits are also not realistic; she chooses to focus more on mood and emotion. The fact the faces take up the whole page too, promote the focus on the emotion. I enjoy this element in her work.
I am hoping to create similar work to hers in due course.

One thing I don’t get with big, scary designs is the use of veins
Like, yeah it’s scary and all, but also really impractical if the character was alive and in a fight. Examples:
Tw: horror characters and disturbing imagery
God Z (or Zeus) from FNF: Vs Sonic.exe D-sides (I think that is the name at least). The veins in his head/shell are quite uncomfortable to look at, and works towards the more unsetting vibe of an alternative Lord X, but also makes you think, “wow, one paper cut, and he dead”
Tumblr media
Idk who this one is, but the same deal. Definitely scary and terrifying, but the abscess of views around the neck give the appearance of a fatal weakness in the design
Tumblr media
Ultra M from FNF: Mario’s Madness v2. Overall a great design that uses unsightly imagery to create a horror character. Instead of going for a thicker, muscular build, it goes for a leaner, more starved appearance. The veins here aren’t as noticeable, except around the limbs.
Tumblr media
And then there is… Hulk? I think..? Anyways! While the veins on the arms portray strength and stress on the body, it also creates a weakness. Most injections are through the veins, so your whole arm is like a target practice for lethal syringes.
Tumblr media
Even in people, it is occasionally a sign of something unhealthy!
While normal cases of prominent veins occur while exercising, it is normal, as “exercises cause the muscles to swell and harden, which pushes veins toward the surface of the skin”. It is harmless, and doesn’t provide and benefits, but no harm either.
Tumblr media
But then we get into varicose veins, which can be a serious health risk. To quote mayoclinic, “Weakened valves, also called incompetent valves, within the veins might cause varicose veins. The weakened valves let blood pool in the veins instead of traveling to the heart. When blood pools in the veins, the veins become larger, making them show under the skin”. While mostly harmless, it can lead to/cause pain, blood clots, and ulcers.
Tumblr media
So all in all, veins are a very good way to increase the details of your character, but it is also good to be aware of what it could also mean for the character you are creating. If varicose veins suit your character, then go for it! But if that is not the intended result, then it might be better to look into alternatives for character creation. If an overly veiny torso/limbs fit in with your character’s character, then draw those blood lines! This is art, and you can make whatever you want.
Idk why I went on this rant, it was bugging me for a while and I wanted to research it, and give results to anyone that might find it useful.
