A flicker in the dark Part 2

Summary: Rose Lancaster just about escaped death after a family scandel came to light. Her family gets murdered by the Lantsov crown, while she's set free. Five years after everything Rose returns to Os Alta as the servant Lilian Howard, working in the Little Palace. When she sees the handsome General Kirigan again, something inside her starts to spark. After all who could ever be afraid of the dark?

Five Years Later

I pulled my dark blue cloak tighter to me as I walked up the path to the Grand Palace. It’s been five years since I last walked these paths although with a different identity. The Rose Lancaster that had spent summers here at the palace in favor of the king and crown prince was dead. She died on the gallows next to her family for where I was concerned. Lilian Howard took her place.

As I walked around the Grand Palace towards the door on the West-wing of the castle, I found myself staring at the gallows in the distance. I was glad the find them empty, but some part of me had expected my parents and brother hanging there, even though they were burned five years ago. Five years ago, I let myself cry for an entire night and never cried again. A Lady never shows weakness, my mother had told me. Even on the gallows she hadn’t looked scared. She had her head high and looked down on everyone. Just like she had done her entire life. Just as I’m doing now walking into the servant’s hall. I couldn’t believe when my old master, an elder gentleman named Edward Karkarov, told me a position had opened at the palace and had put my name forward. Mister Karkarov took me in five years ago when I stopped at his house to ask for shelter. He took petty in me when I said my parents died in the war and took me in as his maid. It was just me and him at the house and he treated me like his daughter most of the time, but he wasn’t young anymore and he had insisted I would be far happier at the palace where I could really be of use. He couldn’t have been more wrong. But he died two days after I got permission to go work at the palace. I was the only one attending his funeral and he left all his assets to me. But because of my low standing those assets had been taken away. I had taken a few things dear to me, like the book he read to me every night, because he thought I couldn’t read.

Walking the servant’s halls of the Grand Palace felt so familiar. I used to come down here to hide from my brother and prince Vasily when they tried to catch me. I was staring at the small painting representing Sankta Elizabeth, when a woman behind me coughed.

“Lilian Howard?” she asked. When I turned around, I saw a woman in her forties in a grey servant’s uniform looking at me. She was quite small, but her posture told me she was in charge. I stopped myself from straightening my back and slumped my shoulders a bit.

“That’s me” I said with a faint smile. She snorted as she looked me over. I had added a bit more weight since my near-death experience and even my face had gotten a little rounder. Maybe I had eaten a bit too many cakes in Mister Edward Karkarov’s household.

“Keep the sweet smiles for yourself. You are here to work and work only. My name is Hilda, I’m the head servant at the Little Palace where you will be stationed”. Hilda turned around and walked toward the sleeping quarters.

“Listen closely, because I will only explain everything once” she said as she entered a small bedroom with two narrow beds.

“This is your room. You share this room with Daisy. Your shift starts at five in the morning. You help to bring breakfast to the dining hall in the Little Palace and see the needs of the Grisha there. After that you will help Daisy to clean the Darkling’s chambers if he is present. For the rest of the day, you will help clean the other chambers and see to their needs. You will speak with two words when addressed and never ever argue with them, do you understand?” I occurred to me that Hilda had a slight Fjerden accent.

“Yes, mam” I said keeping my head down a bit.

“Good. That’s your uniform. Daisy will be here shortly and then you can help setting for lunch”. With that she left and closed the door behind her. I sighed and took off my blue cloak and dress. The servant’s uniform was the same style as my old one. A simple corset top with grey skirts. The embroidery was much nicer though. Faint blue swirls on the hem on the skirts and sleeves. As I tied the corset a young woman my age walked into the room. She was short and skinny. Her dark red hair was tied atop her hair.

“Hello, I’m Daisy” she said with a chipper voice. Her brown eyes had a certain warmth in them that I haven’t seen in a long time and reminded me of my mother’s eyes.

“Hello Daisy, I’m Lilian” I said smiling at her while finishing my corset. I looked in the mirror. The neckline on this dress was a little lower than on my old one, but it was still decent. A necklace with a blue stone hung between my collar bones. It was the last thing I had from my mother. I was able to steal it back after they let me go. The Lancaster stone, now a bit faded, was still beautiful as always.

“Pretty necklace” Daisy said studying the necklace. I smiled over my shoulder.

“Thank you, Daisy. My old master gave it to me, as a birthday present”.

“Your master gave that to you?” she asked in disbelieve. “I wish I had a master like that. Where are you from?”

“A small town near Keramzin” I said. “Mister Karkarov had a kind heart”. That part was true. He was a really nice man. Never ever raised his voice with me or treated me unfair.

“I can see that” Daisy was still eying the necklace as I undid my long blond hair and fixed it back up. When I finished twisting my hair I turned back to Daisy.

“Shall we set up lunch?” I asked. Daisy straightened herself and smiled.

“Yes, I’ll show you around”. I didn’t need a tour. I had been down here so many times, I probably know the passages between the Grand and Little palace better than any servant here. But I kept my mouth shut as Daisy showed me the basics as we took plates through the passage to the Little Palace. When we emerged on a narrow staircase into the dining hall, I looked around. It had been a more than five years since I last walked through here. I always loved being at the Little Palace. I loved watching the Grisha using their magic. I tried to keep my face blank as we walked towards the buffet to put down our plates. Grisha were walking in taking food as they were talking to their friends about their classes and assignments. Daisy and I kept to the side-lines answering to requests as lunch went on. As I was standing near a pillar close to the dark wooden doors, I couldn’t help but miss the quiet at mister Karkarov’s house. We always ate together, and I made him his sherry coffee afterwards. I even slept in the guest bedroom, which was just a lush as his room. So different from here. I was pulled out of thought by Daisy.

“Could you bring tea to the war room Lilian? I have to go back to the kitchen. The cook forgot a few things for the Summoners”. The war room was in the Darkling’s chambers. Chambers I knew too, from all the times I hid there from my brother Dimitri and Prince Vasily. They were too afraid of the General that they didn’t dare to step inside. Excellent hiding spot, until I got caught by Ivan. The Darkling’s right hand. Let’s just say I wasn’t allowed to leave the Grand Palace again. Ten-year-old me had apologized to the Darkling when he got back, but he wasn’t angry.

“Yes sure” I said taking the tray from here and walking towards the doors. The oprichniki opened the doors for me. I knocked on the door of the war room and waited. Without a word from inside the door opened. The room was exactly the same. The big round wooden table in the middle, the old-style maps on the walls and the man sitting at the end of the table. The Darkling hadn’t changed at all. His dark hair was neatly combed back and his black kefta was impeccable. He looked up when I walked towards him with his tea, and I wasn’t until now I realised that maybe five years wasn’t enough to make people forget me. But as I set the tea in front of him, he gave me no indication that he remembered me

“Thank you” he said as I poured his tea.

“Can I get you anything else?” I asked quickly remembering what Hilda had said. “Sir”. I smiled faintly. The Darkling looked at me.

“You are new” he said.

“Yes sir. My name is Lilian” I bowed a bit. Too graceful Lilian. He looked at me one more time and noticed the necklace.

“Pretty necklace for a servant. Where did you attain it?” he leaned back in his chair to look intimidating. I had to admit it worked a bit.

“My former master gave it to me sir”. He raised his eyebrows.

“Is that so? Who was this former master?” His grey eyes like always were cool with no emotion, but I could have sworn something had changed since I stepped into the room.

“Edward Karkarov’s household sir”. I folded my hands behind my back and looked at him. Now something definitely changed in his face. Something like a smile came over his lips.

“Edward Karkarov. I remember him. A fair man” he said eventually.

“He was. Treated me well”

“I heard of his passing. How long did you work for him?”

“Five years sir”. The Darkling nodded absentmindedly and turned back towards his tea.

“Thank you for the tea Lilian” he said dismissing me.

“Good day sir” I said bowing once more and leaving the room. Other servants were already clearing out the dining hall when I came back. A man in his late twenties came up to me.

“You must be Lilian. I’m Ethan” he said and gave me a hand to shake.

“Nice to meet you, Ethan” I said and took it. Ethan was tall and muscular for a servant. His hazel-coloured hair was cut short as for servant requirements. I noticed a thin scar running across his left cheek.

“Nice to meet you too. How is your first day so far?” he asked as he took a bunch of plates in his arms. I grabbed the empty tea pots.

“Very good. I cannot complain” I said. Ethan looked at me with a funny look before we entered the small stairwell to the passage. I nearly slapped myself. Use commoners talk, Lilian. Mister Karkarov never commented on my way of speech, but I should have realised that here people would notice.

“Where did you grow up?” Ethan asked.

“I was born near the border of Fjerda, but I’ve worked in Mister Edward Karkarov’s household near Keramzin”.

“Never heard of him. I was born here in Os Alta. My parents are servants here as well. I manly work at the stables, but I help out here and there”. Ethan looked over one of his broad shoulders.

“A stable boy working inside the palace?” Quite unusual. Ethan blushed a bit.

“Daisy told me a new servant came in today. She said you were really pretty. I had to see for myself” he said turning back to the passage. To my surprise I felt heat coming up my cheeks. I knew I was pretty. I’ve been commented on it my entire life. But hearing it from someone who never had to pretend a day in his life, made it seem like I’ve never been complemented.

“This is where you say I’m handsome too”. I laughed.

“I’ll think about it” I answered and walked into the kitchen. The kitchen wasn’t as busy as before. Two of the cooks were sitting in wooden chairs reading the newspaper. I set the empty tea pots near the washing basin for one of the kitchen maids to wash off. Ethan put his plates down and looked at me.

“It was nice meeting you Lilian. See you around” he said and walked off.

“See ya” I said to his back. Ethan just waved as he hurried back to the passages. Daisy walked around the corner with a grin on her face.

“I see you’ve met Ethan Walker” she said taking a leftover pastry for a plate and taking a bite.

“I suppose I have you to thank for that?” I asked with a light tone. Daisy just snorted.

“Off course. I need someone to gossip with of how handsome he is”. She had a point. Ethan was handsome. Even more so than the sons of the Royal households.

“Consider yourself lucky” I said with a smile picking up a pastry. It tasted divine. Suddenly I missed being at court. Eating good food, enjoying the music. Dancing with my friends. Can I still call those people friends after they were willing to see me hang? Even Vasily did ask for my brother and me to be spared. I thought he didn’t want to see his lifetime friends hang, but apparently, he was at the horseraces. Couldn’t be bothered about us. I felt Daisy touch my arm.

“Are you okay?” she asked a bit worried. I blinked a few times and mastered to put a smile on my face.

“Yes, I’m tired from my long journey”. I wasn’t about to admit I was feeling sorry for myself. Which I shouldn’t in the first place. My mother always told me those emotions were weak. Women should be strong but caring. We need to be the rock their man can lean on. I never really agreed with that part, but I do think women should be strong. Stronger than anything.

“I can imagine” Daisy said finishing up her pastry. “We should continue our work”. I nodded and followed her to our chores.

That evening I was lying on the narrow bed staring at the stone ceiling. Daisy was already snoring next to me, but I couldn’t sleep. I had debated to go to the kitchen to get a cup of tea, but I had no idea how the stove worked. After another ten minutes of lying there I got up and went through the duffel bag I had brought with me. I found a pair of thick pants and a blouse. I pulled my blue cloak over that and laced my boots on. The Lancaster necklace hung around my neck as always. I hid it under my blouse and silently walked outside.

I probably shouldn’t have come here, but after dwelling around the garden I found myself standing next to the gallows. There were no bodies hanging and even the notice board of upcoming executions was empty. Everyone was behaving than. Even though it was bitter cold outside, my hands were sweating as I stood there but I couldn’t leave. You survived I kept telling myself after I left Os Alta. For a year after I told myself that. And now for the first time in four years I said it again.

“You survived”. My voice was barely a whisper, but the words gave me the confidence to climb up the steps and touch the ropes where my family had hung and finally the one that was wrapped around my neck. I took a deep cold breath and out, steadying my shaking hands. You survived. I heard him before I saw him.

“Are you thinking about hanging yourself again, Rose?”

Ch-4~ Welcome Back~

She looked around at the dark wood walls. The golden domes shining all the same and the walls glimmering with the decorative pearls. Everything around her was all the same, yet, so different. The darkling had went off to somewhere else with his oprichniki. Anaya was gazing at the view around her when a woman approached her.

She had deep auburn hair and perfect features, her eyes were of a golden-amber colour and her skin shone beautifully in the light. She was dressed in a white kefta with golden embroidery.

"You must be Anaya, I'm Genya Safin. The darkling has sent me to escort you to your chambers" she spoke in a smooth an clear voice

Anaya followed her without saying a word, they were accompanied by two female servants. Genya Safin, she'd heard of her, but never met her personally. Genya was quite popular among the grisha, mostly because of her extraordinary abilities. She was a Tailor, a special and rare type of Corporalnik. Her abilities ranged from healing small cuts and bruises to changing the look of one's face. She was despised by most of the Grisha her age because she had been gifted to the queen, by the darkling himself.

Genya led her to her room. It looked quite similar to the one she had as a child, but this was a lot more bigger.

"You used to live here, didn't you?" Genya asked her as she sat on a chair near the bed.

"Yeah" Anaya hesitated before sitting on the bed

Genya took a sharp breath before speaking "Well, I'm in no place to ask you further questions about your personal life and you clearly don't look like you're in any state to answer"

Anaya was relieved that Genya didn't ask her any further questions. "You certainly look like you've been in many fights" Genya took a closer look at her, and waved her fingers softly over the scar on her forehead.

"You're not wearing the Corporalki colours" Anaya finally spoke and the words came out as more of a question.

"I wear the servant's colours, because I'm only seen as servant by the queen"

Anaya almost felt bad for her, though she wasn't entirely sure as of what colour embroidery do Tailors have in their keftas.

"Saints, you are in such desperate need for a bath" Genya looked at her with a disgusted look. Anaya felt a sting by her words, but she was right, she hadn't bathed for weeks and was in a pitiful state.

Genya gestured to the maids, and they came near her.

"Get up" Genya ordered Anaya

Anaya stood up hastily and the maids suddenly began unbraiding her hair and stripping her off, one of them measured her height and waist. Anaya tried to move to move her arms away from their grasp. "Easy, they're just trying to make you look less like a scrawny pirate's daughter" Genya spoke. They paused for a moment to look at the scars on her back. She already knew what they were looking at, "Leave them be, they're not worth the time and effort" she told Genya.

Anaya felt incredibly embarrassed in being naked in front of them, but she didn't feel like she had any choice.

The maids led her into the bathtub that was in one side of the gigantic room, and closed the curtains. The started cleaning her wrists, shoulders, feet, and everywhere they were capable of. Then, one of the maids suddenly dipped her head inside the water.

Blood, all around her, blood in the water. She tried to desperately to scream, but failed miserably. She was choking, there was someone near her, not alive anymore.

Anaya quickly got her head out of the water. It had felt like her throat had closed up and she had lost the ability to breath for a moment. She starting taking rapid and panicked breath and began to her whole body began to tremble.

Genya looked at her with a concerned look and gestured the maids to leave.

"Are you okay?" she asked her

"Yeah, yes I'm alright. And I am perfectly capable of cleaning myself" Anaya managed to speak.

She got out after a few minutes. She'd worn the dark blue night gown that Genya had brought her.

"You're kefta will be sent to you in the morning. Tidemaker, right?" Genya asked

"Yeah"

"I'll leave you to yourself now, try to get some sleep. Your training will be starting from tomorrow" Genya left her room.

Anaya slowly laid down on the enormous bed. Her surroundings felt completely strange to her, but she tried to brush off the uneasy feeling in her stomach, and tried to sleep.

A flicker in the dark Part 1

A/N: This is something I wrote a while ago but was never sure of. But I decided to post it anyways. This will be a more mature story so 18+ only.

Five Years Before

I was supposed to die. I should be dead if it wasn’t for some miracle. I was standing in the blistering sun waiting for my death when I was found not guilty of treason. Never in the history of Ravka had this happened. I remember looking at the bodies of my parents and brother hanging from their nooses, when the order came through. A soldier came running from the Grand Palace, heaving when he stepped next to the king to give him a note. The grounds between the Little and the Grand Palace was filled with people who were eager to watch the noble house of Lancaster be hanged. Even my friend Evelynn of house Godwin stood amongst the crowed with not a glimpse of sorrow in her eyes. Times like this proof who your real friends are right? Her father Duke Egerton stood behind her, smiling. He had gotten what he wanted. The Lancaster’s were out of the way. Almost. He was now in the Kings favor. His right hand. The same right hand where my father used to be until he made some mistakes. The king, a man the same age as my father with a belly the size of a carriage wheel, read the note twice. Thrice. From where I was standing with the noose loosely around my neck, I could see his eyebrows twitching. The other Royals of three different houses were standing behind him, trying not to pry their neck to see what had the Kings attention. Even the commoners were looking with interest wondering why the daughter of a traitor wasn’t choking already. The king ignored all the stares and ripped the paper in too sending the soldier away with the bat of a hand. And then he looked at me. Never in my life had I been scared as I was now. My heart was pounding when King Pjotr Lantsov looked at me like he was going to rip my head of himself. But he didn’t scare me. A life at court had taught me that. Not even the man on his left scared me. The Darkling, General Kirigan, The Commander of the Second Army and a Shadow Summoner. The only one of his kind. But the king who used to adore me now looked at me with disgust.

“It seems something has come to light” he said loud and clear. The murmuring stopped and I could have sworn the ground had never been this quiet. Even the birds weren’t singing. I just looked at him, too afraid to open my mouth.

“Rose Lancaster has been found not guilty of treason” his voice was loud and clear. And I swear I almost dropped to my knees, if the noose wasn’t around my neck. Duke Egerton’s smile faded, and he snapped his neck to the king.

“That isn’t possible” he shouted. Even Evelynn turned her head in disbelieve. The whole crowed was now talking. I wanted to smile, but something told me the king wasn’t finished yet.

“Rose Lancaster is the bastard daughter of Miriam Lancaster. And by law not a member of the House of Lancaster” I nearly vomited. I wasn’t a Lancaster? I barely felt the noose around my neck being removed and my hands untied. People were shouting now, but not at me, at the noble houses. They were angry for putting an innocent girl on the gallows. I couldn’t believe it, not even five minutes ago they were ready to see me die. A guard dressed in a green and blue uniform led me of the platform back to the dungeons. As we passed the king, he stopped me with just the look in his eyes.

“You got lucky little girl. If it wasn’t for your mothers written confession you would have been hanging, there with them” he looked me over. I could have guessed what I looked like. Small, underweight of all those weeks in the dungeon. Dressed in grey prisoner’s clothes that were too big for me. “It’s a shame really. You could have been queen one day. You are a lot easier on the eyes that Duke Egerton Godwin’s daughter”. I was still too baffled of what had just happened to fully process what he said. I looked at the tall man on his left. The Darkling. Just like always his posture and facial expression revealed nothing of what he felt, but his eyes were on me. My mother had told me stories from when I was little every time, we were at court I would ask the Commander to show his shadows. And when he did, I squealed and tried to catch them. But then I turned eleven and I was time to act like a Lady and a future Queen. It had never been a secret that the King and my father had arranged Vasily and I to be married as soon as both of us were of age.

“Thank you for sparing me Moi Tsar” I said bowing my head. The King lowered his voice.

“Be smart and get as far away from here as possible”. I just nodded and followed the soldier back to the dungeons where I stripped of my title and took the advice the King gave me. Twenty minutes later, I was off to never return.
