If there’s one thing Simon “Ghost” Riley knows about Spades, it’s that she, in all her infinite glory, never spares any expense when it comes to how she looks, and what her gear is. And the same has begun to occur for the 141 as well. It started small, bits and pieces rearranged, a few new knives and sidearms to try out, then it went to bigger things, new rifles and shotguns, and then it hit the gear. At random moments, Spades had pulled each man of the 141 into her room and stripped them down to their tighty-whities before she measured each inch of them—Soap and Gaz had gone willingly, it took Price a few days to convince, and Ghost? Ghost didn’t step foot in her room or anywhere near her when he learned what she was doing—no need though, she already had what she needed from him.

It’s a late evening in October when she comes to his door. She doesn’t bother knocking, never does, and unlocks it with a key she had made (he has no idea when and how she did it), stepping into his room. He looks up from the mission brief he’s been reading while laying on his bed, an unimpressed, almost annoyed look in his eyes as he glares at her.

“Don’t look so happy to see me, Simon,” she says with a sickly-sweet tone. “Someone might accuse you of actually liking me.”

“Out.” Is all he says.

She tuts and beckons him with a finger. “Come.”

They stare at each other for a solid minute before he exhales through his nose, annoyed and exasperated, and rolls off the bed; he stretches and rolls his shoulders before following her down the hall into her room.

“I’m not getting measured,” he says as he closes the door behind them.

“As if I don’t already have your measurements, Simon Riley,” she retorts and now he’s a bit unnerved because he’s never given her time to measure him, so how did she already have them? She doesn’t answer his silent question, merely walks to her room divider, and rolls out a fancy looking set of black gear. “I give to you, ‘The Gilded Reaper.’” She announces with a note of pride in her tone and a helluva lot of it in her expression.

He takes one look at it. “I am not wearing that.”

“YOU HAVEN’T EVEN TRIED IT ON!” Spades yells and thrusts her hand to it. “I spent a lot of time and money on this, and you are going to try it on for me whether you like it or not.”

“Am I?” he dares and it’s obvious he’s going to go for the door as she points at him.

“If you make me chase you down and drag you back here, I’m going to make you regret it entirely, do you understand me, Simon Riley?”

He’s almost tempted to do it just to see her follow suit with her threat; he glares her down before he lets out a long breath. “Fine.”

Spades smiles and chirps, “Thank you.” Simon dips behind the divider, tugging the mannequin with him and she rolls her eyes. “It’s as if you think I haven’t seen anything you have before.”

“It’s called ‘common decency,’” he retorts. “Maybe you should look it up.” She throws one of her shoes over the divider at the tuft of blond hair she can see. “That hurt.”

“I meant it. Now hurry up, I want to see it.”

It’s another few moments before he steps outside the divider, and she stares wide-eyed as he does.

“Well?” he asks, and he really means, “This is so fucking stupid.”

Spades takes her time walking in circles around him, pulling at belts, at the straps, checking if everything is fitting well enough before she stops in front of him, staring up into his golden mask.

“I like it,” she notes, and her voice lowers an octave, a tell-tale sign that she’s being honest; she only ever does it with him. “I think it’s you.”

“It’s ostentatious,” he deadpans.

“Careful, that’s a big word for a caveman’s brain.”

He rolls his eyes, not taking the bait of the insult. “I can’t wear this out on missions. It’s practically a neon sign that says, ‘Hey, shoot me!’”

Spades reaches up and strokes the gold mask. “Who said it was missions?”

Simon freezes up, body still as he gazes at her, and Spades looks awfully innocent as she dips her fingers below his golden mask, feeling his masked face beneath. It’s not often that Spades can render Simon completely silent, the two practically have a raging desire to be each other’s constant pissing match that there’s always something to say, and yet, he’s still quiet as she pulls her hands away and twirls around him to his back. Her hands slide up his sides beneath the cape, feeling firm muscle beneath.

“I made this just for us, Simon,” she coos, hands slipping down to his belt where she tugs it. “I was thinking we could take a trip to the mountains where I have that cabin and we could…play.”

“You mean hunt each other,” he breathes, and it’s low and heavy, she knows exactly what he really wants to say.

“All work and no play makes such dull boys,” Spades muses. “We’ve spent so much time working, Simon, we’re awfully dull, don’t you think?”

He lets out a low noise from his throat, a warning that should send bells off in her head, but all it does is urge her on, a grin worming its way onto her lips.

“Please, Simon,” she begs and lifts a leg on the outside of his hip, her thigh just beside his hand. “It would be so much fun.”

His head tips to the side, hand grasping her knee in an iron-clad grip and he spins them; Spades is back up against the wall in a flash and she gives him a flash of white teeth in a smile as he takes her jaw in a firm hand, tilting it up to get a good look at her. “We haven’t played hunt in a while. What makes you think you’ll win this time?” he challenges.

It’s true, Simon often wins their games of hunt, but it’s only because Spades gets tired of waiting and lets herself be hunted down. “Call it a feeling,” she replies, tugging at his center belt. “Should I give you the coordinates for our game, Ghost?”

He leans forward, close enough that she can feel the warmth radiating off of him and he remarks, “I’ll get ‘em on my own.”

As he pulls away, she watches as he turns and stalks for the door, only stopping when her voice reaches him in a provoking, “May the best hunter win.”

As a follow up to my favorite books of the first quarter of the year, here are some of my favorites from April, May, June! In no particular order, just in the order I read them.

The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty is a fun, pirate fantasy adventure featuring one of my recently realized favorite tropes: getting the band back together. A retired female pirate just wants to live a quiet life raising her young daughter, when she is recruited to rescue the child of a former crewmate. She must reunite with her old crew and save the day. Killer cover, fun story.

Chlorine by Jade Song is a coming of age body horror novel about a teenaged girl who will do anything to become a mermaid. Slow burn- you know what will happen from the beginning, but it's a deep dive into the mind of this queer young swimmer to watch her get there.

Malice by Keigo Higashino is a Japanese novel translated by Alexander O. Smith about a detective determined to uncover the motive behind the murder of a famous novelist. Loved this why-done-it.

We See Each Other: A Black, Trans Journey Through TV and Film by Tre'vell Anderson is a nonfiction exploration of Black trans representation in pop culture and history, as well as moments from the author's own life. Looks at everything To Wong Foo to Pose to Survivor.

Don't Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones is the second book in the Indian Lake Trilogy. SGJ is my favorite horror author but his work and ESPECIALLY these books are not for everyone. People either love or hate this series and what can I say? I get it. Graphic here.

VenCo by Cherie Dimaline is about a young Indigenous woman who has to go on an adventure with her unusual and elderly grandmother after she discovers that she's one of seven witches to usher in a new era of power.

Madame Restell by Jennifer Wright is a nonfiction book about a famous abortionist in pre-Gilded Age New York. I found it fascinating, if not incredibly depressing, with how much we recycle the same arguments over and over again. Great read. Trigger warnings for this one, from childbirth to abortion to racism to misogyny.

Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati is a Greek mythology retelling on the titular murderer. As a Clytemnestra apologist, I really liked this. I kind of think so many of Greek retellings these days are all very similar, in writing style & theme so I feel like if you've read one of these recent retellings you've read them all, but I liked it!

Hamra & the Jungle of Memories by Hanna Alkaf is a Little Red Riding Hood retelling set in modern Malaysia, where a girl in a red hijab must help a tiger return to his human form. Really a beautiful story about humanity, grief, and what it means to make mistakes. Also just a fun adventure. Loved it. Graphic here.

You're Not Supposed to Die Tonight by Kalynn Bayron is another final girl horror novel. Look, I'm gonna read all of them and I'm gonna love all of them! You give me a final girl and I'm gonna eat it up. You give me a queer Black final girl trying to survive the night at her camp recreating a famous (fictional) horror movie while trying to protect her girlfriend? Yum, yum, yum.

Honorable mentions: Ayoade on Top is Richard Ayoade's definitive tome on the Gwenyth Paltrow film View From the Top. Get the audiobook for this one for sure! The Three Dahlias is a fun cozy mystery, and Saint Juniper's Folly is a fun queer modern fantasy adventure.

Originally, Kreuger was going to be a big boat guy; Reaper would not have had to go through the different interrogations and Kreuger would have had a whole hyper-focus moment and know where the hell Ghost was exactly. However, this idea was scrapped due to the need to lengthen the chapter and add some more spark to the story.

König's name was not originally Dominik, it was supposed to be Arthur. However, in German, it's not pronounced the same as in English. The wonderful @dudewithastick told me that "Dominik" sounded exactly the same as in English, and I figured it fit better!

König chews his mask, this was detailed in Chapter 27: Two Idiots, One Bed.

In the same chapter, the chapter song "Like the Dawn" by the Oh Hellos had a really specific part "You were the brightest shade / Of sun I had ever seen / Your skin was gilded with / The gold of the richest kings / And like the dawn / You woke the world inside of me" This was Reaper describing how she saw Simon that chapter (quite literally the main reason I had this song as the chapter song instead of something more upbeat for the action).

Reaper and Ghost, initially, weren't supposed to be kissing this early. In fact, Chapter 26 was supposed to wrap up much quicker and they were supposed to go on a few dates before they even considered kissing, but none of those ideas ended up fitting and I liked the idea of the stressful situation with smoooooooching!

Reaper and Ghost were also not supposed to have that soft moment in Chapter 17: Doctor, the Problem's in My Chest, initially Soap was supposed to get shot almost immediately.

The sequence of Simon coming up to Reaper's door in Chapter 22: Violence Isn't Always the Answer. Sometimes It's Soup. was originally supposed to be led by Eda bringing up how cute the two would look together and trying to set them up on a date.

The whole gang/criminal heist vibe in Norwick was definitely inspired by Six of Crows and the Gilded Wolves!

Mari specifically was created as a weird combo of Cardan from FotA and Kaz from SoC ironically enough lol.

As the Moonfall Arc slowly comes to an end, here’s some quick recaps of what happened.

Hey everyone Steve here!

Today was crazy. First was a lock down while Skyward and Midnight Nightmare reunite ! Professor Theo losing control of listener set off a massive chain reaction.

We were introduced to new students! The Pink Bunny Azalea and a new gloomy face, Sienna!

Despite the new faces we were struck with tragedy. First Professor Theo was revealed to be the malicious entity and was beheaded on school grounds by the Queens Crown Prince. Nazacth the reaper. Shortly before he had a chance to return the storm hit. 5 Students were lead into the forest. Screams were heard and bonds shattered forever.....

Karenos collapsed immediately from the pain. Leone was taken to the hospital with him. Lei unfortunately witness something so horrible it rendered her in hysterics.

Seeing fellow students and close friends on the screen broke many hearts. Saoirse fainted due to the news of death and news of pregnancy. What a rollarcoaster of emotions. Kylona broke down losing her dearest friend Urgrad. Sara lost her trusted protector Theo but gained a new protector and lover, Lorelay.

Savken and barry are understandably in distress. Someone get those guys a drink. What will come of everyone in the coming days. Well as we lose one teacher we gained another. Music teacher Vienna!

Yo, Leone reporting in for recap.

Day after tragedy we were hit once again. Verity was put under an illusion of her mate being attacked by a creep. Little to her knowledge she wasn't attacking a grown creep but a 10 year old student. After the air got spicy with some electricity it seems the illusion was broken before the final blow could be dealt. Verity was understandably distraught and confused. Runa and i ran the kid to the hospital where his life was saved but despite the best doctors and a saintess, he would remain paralyzed. Cant wait for that lawsuit.

After a while Barry came to vouch for verity despite my nose already telling me she spoke the truth. Soon there was an earthquake that put our resident unicorn into a fit where her mother in law soon stole her, Lei and Ra off to Maex manor it the school gets its shit straight, (I dont blame them). Lorelay finally makes it to the hospital to calm verity down.

In open realm, Rebellion brews as news hits the Gilded Scales. Fueled with grief and power, They take Hermione (Kar Mother) in custody and Aldora (kar lil sister) escapes using her ability to go through objects. Gilded Scales search for the girl and prepare to storm the school and force Serenity to kneel.

The wave of tragedy and angst hits us for a third day in a row. It seems like no matter where I go, I never catch a break. Apparently the gilded scales (an elite group of dragon warriors) are approaching the school, craving vengeance for Urgrad (RIP). This put the school in an uproar, destroying any semblence of normalcy. And to top it off, the daycare went up in flames while we were all going down into the bunker, with kids still inside!?!?!?!?

Luckily for the kids, staff were quick to attend to the blaze, with the help of some brave students. Although unfortunately, they were unable to save everyone. Those charged with taking care of the babies were found dead in the ashes, and two children disappeared

Today was truly a whirlwind. After the evacuation to the bunker. Everyone above leapt into battle. Unfortunately she wasn’t the head of guard for show. Professor Morgan was decapitated. Worry not students. She will return in a few days. Staff, Students and Guards alike all encountered many injuries. And some laid dead.

Before more could die the Queen came through and exploded the traitors organs ~ . With clean up and everyone recuperating. Everyone can finally exit the bunker.

In other, less grave news. Ryo bonds with Damien. Lorelay gets busted by Azels big mouth~ everyone enjoys their slightly cannibalistic burgers and talks of eugenics? While the school staff attempts to regain some semblance of normalcy with Power tag and Power Dodgeball. They have some fun for once. Children actually enjoying using their powers after the latest battle.

Unfortunately though, during Dodgeball a young lady names Cassandra hatches a pitiful revenge. Much like Mrs Verity, she was under an illusion that the Prefect of our fox house, Fos Alepou, Leone Corinth , was the murderer of not only his own mate, but her older brother Sleazius.

After a tearjerking monologue about her brothers true role, She plunges a dagger coated in the waters of styx into the prefects chest. Mixing with the already deadly Visirium Dust causing his organs to fall into failure.

Thankfully we have two phoenixs on site, with both their tears and the kindness of Lorelay Polly in donating her organs, Mr Corinth will pull through. After much convincing Miss Cassandra finally realizes the gravity of her actions. Now cursed by the goddess Amie, she sits with the weight of almost murdering an innocent. Not only an innocent, but the only witness to the true murderer who is still on the loose.

While all this is going down, were still in the middle of the dodgeball match. Who will win? Team 1 or Team 2? Place bets now. Til next time. Jason out.
