Basileus doesn’t care that Rhydian’s marriage to Oleander was arranged by him (as a political move — politics, power, glory dictates everything King Basileus does), or that Rhydian is too terrified to speak his mind.

There is no love in that relationship, only fear (Rhydian’s side) & absolute, unwavering loathing (Basileus’ side). He wants to execute his own flesh-&-blood firstborn son in front of billions of their people, including their allied planets/dimensions. The people of Xezars are entirely brainwashed by the corrupt dictatorial monarchs, & none of the beings on Xezars dare to say a bad word about them, for fear of retaliation (the monarch = members of Rhydian’s family, mostly, as well as equally corrupt ‘family friends’, who bribed their way into power). Rhydian abandoned Xezars out of fear of his home planet, but more importantly: in complete & utter fear of Basileus. The people of Xezars branded him as a selfish traitor.
