Crowley hastily shifted the vase away with his familiar projected aura of annoyance when caring for (or, in his words, ‘agreeing in a mutually beneficial partnership and/or arrangement with') the plants in his collection, not allowing Aziraphale to look at the label or provide any… Crowley grimaced, encouragement.

This is from a possibly dead WIP? Kinda in a limbo as I like the idea and have a solid future plot that I'd love to explore, but I despise the way the first chapter was written as I hadn't written for a long time and was getting back into the groove of things. Tempted to rewrite it; but we'll see! ^^

Thoughts on the character motivations of secret relationships in AU fanfics...

I've been reading a lot of fanfiction, a lot of AU fanfiction, and something I've seen a few times now is Aziraphale wanting to keep his relationship with Crowley secret because it could potentially jeopardize his career if people knew. (Usually he's in the closet, but maybe there's something about Crowley specifically that makes it scandalous (or both).) This invariably leads to angst until Aziraphale decides to come out after all, and then they live out and proud together, happily ever after. Which, great! But—

I've just realized why this trope kind of bothers me: It isn't true to Aziraphale's character.

Because wanting to stay in heaven's good books isn't his primary motivation for keeping his friendship with Crowley a secret. I mean sure, obviously he doesn't want them to know, but his bigger worry has always been for Crowley and his safety. What if his side found out?

Look at him in the Globe scene, looking at Crowley with such fear: "If Hell finds out...they'll destroy you."

That the secrecy is all just to keep his own public persona clean? No, it doesn't fit.

I have my quibbles with Shotgun Wedding, but this is something it got right, that the relationship is a danger to both their careers, and more to Crowley's than Aziraphale's.

Tangentially, another fic I was reading got me thinking about Crowley's role in this setup. Usually there's strife due to Crowley not being okay with being Aziraphale's dirty secret (which tbf is a legit understandable stance, and a great catalyst for Aziraphale's journey to self-acceptance), but in this one, while Aziraphale had the thing thinking that being with Crowley would ruin his career, Crowley's role was subverted. Instead of Crowley stepping away, Aziraphale pushed him away, assuming Crowley wouldn't want to be his secret, that it wouldn't be fair to him. Until eventually, Crowley snaps, calls him an idiot, and that he doesn't care if Aziraphale is in the closet or not! That he's okay with being Aziraphale's secret. (I hesitate to name the fic because this is a spoiler for the climactic revelations in it, but it is on my fanfic master rec list and if you like I'll tell you in DM.)

That blew my mind. It was so opposite to the other characterizations and yet felt so right for Crowley. He never cared that he had to see Aziraphale on the DL, so long as he got to see him, and he wouldn't dream of trying to make Aziraphale compromise his standing for his sake. "I'm not going to tell anybody. Are you?"

Anyway, all this to say that while I understand the plot setup and why it's used, looking past the surface level, it doesn't actually fit for either of these characters.

Hi there!!!

Oh, dear, I have A TON! I'm not sure if they would be "new", but here I go, nonetheless. I read a lot of AU fics (and I'm writing one), so I hope it's not a pet peeve of yours! I'll try to limit myself and not recommend things that I have seen recommended a lot (like "Factory Settings", "the therapy one with the impossibly long name" LOL, "Slow Show", "Oopsie Omens"... I'll make a couple of exceptions, tho). I also read a lot of WIP's, love angst, hurt/comfort and fluff, and prefer skipping over smut (Not a against it per se, love sexy times with feelings), so my selection is... Very particular. Here it goes!!

Demon and Angel Professors: I adore this series of short fics. There are 200 of them in the collection, they all are 666 words long, and both the guys and the new characters are absolutely endearing. The diversity of the cast was a welcome addition.

Listen, Will You Learn To Hear Me From Afar?: This one is short, a little sad but very, very sweet. Aziraphale starts receiving flowers and poems every three years, after Crowley disappears in Edinburgh. I loved the poetry selection.

Stalwart Sun, Wily Moon: Probably, my first AU and the one that started it all. I'm pretty sure this is one of the "everyone and their grannies have already read this", but I adore the relationships, the way the characters transformed by entering this universe (Crowley being a fantastic art thief with a magnificent taste for clothes was something I never knew I needed). I would absolutely watch an adaptation of this fic to the screens.

Too Wise To Woo Peaceably: This one is, probably, another one of the "everyone has read this fic and I don't care", but I really feel deeply about it and its author. It was a tour the force, with daily posting and the author reading and answering the comments EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. Feral But Fluffy brought me single-handedly into being an active participant in this fandom instead of just lurking in the corners. It's a fantastic continuation from the ending of Season 2, with a lot of angst, hurt, laugh and comfort. And Muriel rings absolutely true in here.

Give A Man A Mask: Another one by Feral! This one is a beautiful seduction game, taking Venice and a Masquerade as the background. Sexy, exciting, and hurtful at the same time.

Postcards From Paris: I find myself absolutely enraptured by the AUs created by Ghostrat (and their illustrations!! I use his AU Streamer!Crowley as my laptop wallpaper), but this one is very close to my heart. One lonely lawyer starts receiving postcards addressed to the previous tenant, signed by one AZF. The concept and execution are lovely. His Streamers AU is also very funny, and the Professors AU (Mon Horrible Cheri) is one of the "must reads with a lot of hits that recommends by itself".

Husband Material: This AU has made me laugh A LOT. Crowley is a wedding planner... And he has to plan the wedding of "the one who got away", Aziraphale. It is still a WIP, and it lights my day whenever it appears in my inbox.

Shepherds of the Damned: an after S2 work, the Crowley recovery arc in this fic had my heart leaping. It is also gripping and full with angst and action. A very noble S3, if you ask me.

Symphony of Second Chances: in this AU, Crowley is a drummer, recovering from a terrible shoulder injury and trying to get back to his place in the orchestra. Aziraphale is the visiting director for the next season... And they are absolutely smitten with each other. A lot of hurt and the sweetest comfort ever (it made me want an Aziraphale in my life more than ever). Still a WIP.

The Anon Before Christmas: This fic was pure happiness and tooth rotting fluff, ideal for December, with a warm cup of cocoa. They are humans and have the nicest group of friends one can ever imagine... But they loathe each other. Of course, one meddling Anathema makes sure to make Crowley Aziraphale's Secret Santa.

To Love The Stars Too Fondly: Another fantastic post S2 fic, filled with love and angst and adventure and all the right things to make it a gripping read, and a GREAT ending. Another take that could be a satisfying alternate canon.

Because We Are Carying The Fire: A horror AU! Aziraphale is a professor with a PhD in parapsychology, and one day he receives a mysterious book. Weird things happen, and he looks for the help of Crowley, a podcaster and self appointed demon expert. It is a WIP, and it really delivers. It is romantic and terrifying at the same time.

And my works!

I've written a short fic, Rebellion, speculating with the causes of The Starmaker's Fall. It came from a prompt imagining "what if rebel angels had been creating alternative lifeforms in the Universe", and it turned slightly dark (because I'm me). I'm also writing and publishing a longer fic, Under The Fold, an AU where AZ Fell and AJ Crowley are journalists who made an exposé that put them in danger and where they will have to use all of their researching abilities to bring justice (and avoid dangers). I've already written 2/3 of it, and half of it is already up, if you feel like reading it!

Wip 1:

For the most part, apart from the occasional bickering about Crowley’s plant-raising methods, Aziraphale stood out of the demon’s way in that regard.

Or at least, he claimed to do so. Though every now and then, the angel could be seen giving a passing compliment to the array of plants that sat around the shop. And time and time again, even when the angel in plain sight, Crowley just happened to never notice.

WIP 2;

Aziraphale thought that he was pretty decent at a small bit of trickery- mischief, even! He had laid a bunch of clues, he was especially proud of how much he had looked out the window as to say ‘LOOK! LOOK OUTSIDE! I HAVE A PLAN!!!’ even if it hadn’t quite worked.

And sure, Crowley had decided to bring up their 6000 year not-quite-relationship and kiss him in the most miserable way that made Aziraphale’s heartshatterintoamillionpiecesand- but he had certainly figured it out, why else would he still be at the bookshop?

WIP 3:

Aziraphale, days later, still found himself thinking about Crowley’s explosion. Whatever had happened, a mild tap to the shoulder had sent Crowley spiraling enough that, even just for a moment, he had seemed convinced that Aziraphale was going to hurt him. It wasn’t the demon’s fault, not in the slightest, but that didn’t deter the sinking feeling that had gutted its way through Aziraphale’s very being when it had happened. It still stuck with him, leaving behind no comfort of the previous denial that had assured him of Crowley’s safety.

(YES THIS IS A PART FROM CH2 OF ONE STEP AT A TIME; TIS NOT ABANDONeD (hopefully)

WIP 4:

Though; wrath would be the wrong word, Aziraphale knew it as clear as a dagger through the heart. He had felt it many times throughout history; the Flood, Edinburgh, the holy water- they all served as reminders of the dangers of bearing one’s heart to the world. Grief, as he knew all too well, was one in the same with love. The same way that love could move mountains, grief could tear down kingdoms. And only now, standing in grief’s wreckage, did Aziraphale realize just how much Crowley had loved him.

Thinking about how Crowley and Aziraphale are nearly always cis men in AU fanfics...

Which, to be clear, I am fine with. I've seen people ranting a bit about it being transphobic or erasure etc. to ignore the nonbinary nature of them. But consider: throughout history, the two of them, even Crowley, have most often chosen man-shaped bodies with male-gendered presentations. And I don't think it's transphobic to honor that preference.

The topic coming up in Or Be Nice in particular got me thinking about it. I loved Aziraphale not making gender-assumptions for Crowley and thinking in they/them pronouns for a huge chunk of the fic. Then, when Crowley finally confirmed the he/him, honestly I loved that too. By all means let's normalize cis-men being allowed to engage in gender-fuckery without having to sacrifice any of their cis-ness.

But it did get me thinking, that it would also be nice to see a nuanced non-binary take sometime.

What if, in that conversation, instead of saying he's "a plain old bloke," Crowley explains a more subtle situation, that he's not exactly male, though most often male-adjacent, and he/him suits best most of the time, if that makes any sense. And then Aziraphale could take a moment to digest this, perhaps even have a tiny revelation himself, and say he knows exactly what he means.

Because you can be nonbinary and still use binary pronouns. :)
