we are less than a month into 2024, and I’ve already had two cis male academics not be able to acknowledge that they were wrong, or that their perspective was not the right one from which to consider a problem, in the same week. on two different platforms, no less.
neither of them were straight, either, which was doubly disappointing!!! but just goes to show, ig
so. academia is still consistent, in case anyone was wondering ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Grad School - Week 2
I'm chugging along here right now to finish a project for class tomorrow because although my class is not until 5pm, my wonderful boyfriend has his first day at a remote job from 8-5 tomorrow, which means I shall have to finish this before he steals the computer back from me. Gotta be grateful he lets me use his computer at all because lord knows......................... I don't know what I would do otherwise. Not go to school, I guess.
Here's a preview.
Tumblr media
This class has taught me so much already like did you know he's just called "Static" not "Static Shock"? TV show was more influential than the comics, that's for sure. A win for me, who is trying to go into TV.
Other highlights from this week include:
Art History class where the whole room bonded over a hatred of Yves Klein-- an artist so insufferable and infuriating, yet sadly we couldn't help but sort of like the end products of his works. If you don't know him, he's a guy with a very weird belief set and a big problem with objectifying women. Literally. He makes them into his "Living Paint Brushes" and then sort of takes all the credit. But whatever, I don't have time to write out our feminist critique of Klein. Unfortunately, Klein, like me, was obsessed with the void. Here's "Le Void" aka "The Void" an installation piece that is just a white empty room which I found interesting.
Tumblr media
But because Klein was stupid and annoying, his exhibition of this piece included leading groups of people into the room at a time rendering it completely moot. It's not a void if there's several people stuffed in with you. Ugh, fake void fan. He also thought he could levitate or something.
Classes were kind of boring otherwise this week. One class was literally just taking about the most basic basics of cinematography which I really didn't need to hear again. It was awful too, because the teacher asked us, "What is the most common shot?" and I KNEW it was medium close-up. I knew it. But, the way he framed it was like a trick question, and no one else was answering so he started doing a little dance, which I thought was supposed to be a hint so I blurted out "Full-body." and he said, "No, but that's an interesting answer psychologically," and then proceeded to say that it meant I keep my distance from other people.
Instantly wanted to go home after that like not only did I say the wrong thing (whatever, don't care really) but then I got PSYCHOANALYZED for it. KMS.
My other big assignment, due Tuesday, is that I have to design and render (a la concept art) a fantasy gun. So, you can look forward to that in next week's post. Otherwise, I'm not really sure what to update with. Been kind of swamped with homework.

me explaining to my grad school professor that even though this week's readings are genuinely SO interesting and engaging, i simply cannot force my brain to focus on them..... because of my human design channel that causes me to have inconsistent access to willpower

i honestly don’t think we as a society appreciate just how immensely the internet has impacted our daily lives. i honestly think that the internet is humanity’s most significant invention since the written word developed 5000 years ago. in saying how important the internet is, i want to be clear that i don’t think the internet is Good or Bad anymore than i believe the written word is Good or Bad. but the internet has changed us. so much so that it’s almost impossible to imagine life before it, even if you were alive during that time. i think we take the internet for granted, which is understandable, since it permeates so much of our lives and we tend to stop noticing things once they lose their novelty. but i think it’s beneficial to think about the internet and what makes it so completely unique in the history of not just technology and communication, but also sociology, psychology, politics, economics, art, love, war…the list of fields that the internet has impacted is practically infinite, so it’s hard to wrap your head around, but if we take the internet for granted, i think we as a people are more likely to more likely to abuse its power to do Bad Things, more likely to fall victim to those using its power to do Bad Things, and more likely to forget that we can also use its power for Good Things.
compared to other communication technology that came before it, the internet ranks number one in three categories: 1) the distance the message can travel; 2) the time it takes for the message to be sent and received; and 3) the level to which users of the technology can remain anonymous.
in other words: the internet allows us to send messages—ANY messages, audio, visual, written, etc.—over a great distance, almost instantaneously, and we don’t even have to sign our real name.
do you realize just how different these aspects are from any other technology in history?? like, looking at the internet like that, i think, of course people would use such a powerful technology in a malicious way. but we don’t have to.

Daily chemical safety lesson: do not shoot yourself in the eye with isopropyl alcohol/ rubbing alcohol. While it likely won’t harm you, it hurts like the dickens.
Sublesson a): there is a reason you are supposed to wear safety glasses in the lab
Sublesson b): the eyewash station is very easy to use. It is not easy to clean up

I've registered for my courses for my PhD, and I'm so excited about it! It feels like it's finally for real happening. I got into almost all the courses I wanted, but there was one I wanted to register for in the folklore department that was full. I did talk to the professor about registering for it (before I knew it was full) and he said it should be fine but we'll have to fill out a form to get me in lol. Either way, I'm really happy and excited to get started

I sent in my first chapter draft!! whoohoo!!! now I just have to wait for three out of four well-intentioned academics to see if it makes any fucking sense!!!
oh my fucking god I’m so tired :’D

Grad School Q2 - Week 6
A day later again but by god we are doing this.
Tumblr media
I drew feet (🤮) I also drew hands but you know I be drawing hands.
Went to a talk by Stephen Sliver who was the character designer for Kim Possible and Danny Phantom. I thought it was super cool! Although it was kind of a like a motivational speech? But he gave good tips for storyboarding portfolios. All and all, I had a good time.
I also finally started my FIRST EVER COMIC SCRIPT!!!
Here's the first page:
PAGE 1 PANEL ONE: Wide shot. The void of space. A single ship floats through the grand emptiness. PANEL TWO: Inside the ship is CAPTAIN XANDER, a 37-year-old long-haul interstellar transporter. He doesn't take care of himself too well-- his hair is greasy, untidy, his coveralls have stains on him, and the area is littered with empty Cosmic Dew cans (like Mtn Dew but space-themed). He’s alone at the helm of the ship  but the ship practically flies itself, he’s paying it no mind, instead focusing on a single display screen off to the right of him. PANEL THREE: Xander converses with the onboard navigational AI on the display, ASTOR, who is displaying a map. Astor indicates it’s speaking by a waveform at the bottom of the navigation console. An area is highlighted in front of the ship. 1) ASTOR: There is a storm on our current path to Proxibe. I suggest rerouting to stop at the satellite stop located 4 AU further.
Sorry, there's no good way to translate the formatting to tumblr but I trust you that I probably maybe formatted it correctly.
It actually was kind of a chill week, which was good because my parents came to visit this weekend and I got the chance to just hang out with them without stressing about school too much! HUZZAH!

Hey you. You know you should be doing The Thing. I don't want to do The Thing, either. But we can sit down and do it for 2 minutes together. Then we can do it for 5 minutes. Then 10. And so on and so forth until it is done. I'll be coming back to reiterate this.
To whoever needs to hear it: it does not have to be perfect. It does not have to be world altering. It just needs to be done. And I'll sit with you while you do The Thing.
Now go. Stop scrolling. Go work on The Thing. I'll be back to check on you and cheer us both on.

literally any time i get feedback on an assignment i expect it to be terrible, despite experience repeatedly proving that i am, yknow, good at what i do. so here's the one sentence long piece of feedback i've been avoiding all morning:
"I enjoyed this a great deal--some very nice phrasing, and the comparison is apt."

Fan fiction has ruined me. I was going to put ‘alpha and omega style positioning’ in my paper meaning the whole biblical beginning and end concept and thought nope can’t do it, bad phrasing nope
