Owl House Essay: Boscha and nostalgic codependent PTSD

The common assumption (or joke) from For The Future is that Boscha is lovesick for Amity.  But Boscha is definitely grappling with PTSD. Poorly.  She watched her only two friends get turned into mannequin corpses, and she only survived by pure luck. This would be horrifying for anyone, but it especially messed with Boscha’s image of being the best of the best of the best.  That would be enough to horribly effect Boscha’s self-image.  But in this Collector apocalypse, Boscha doesn’t even have to the tools to begin remaking that self-image, healthy or not.

One might think that a Queen-bee, bullying, star jock would flourish in the lawlessness of a collapse state; be living it up with confidence and power to abuse.  But Boscha is totally dependent on society.  For it’s titles, trophies and accolades as a lens for their self-worth.  (In the same way how Amity once lost her mind and composure in pursuit of a golden sticker awarded to Willow).  So Boscha is desperately trying to surround herself with trappings of the old world.  Amity is the last surviving member of the Grudgby team, who were Boscha’s tools for social climbing through competitive sport.  But they were also Boscha’s closest friends, though she’s not capable of acknowledging that vulnerability.  Not verbally, at least.

It’s an excellent illustration for why some people will reject progress and revolution, and try to hold society back in the state where the working people are at each other’s throats for scraps.  It’s not because they themselves are well-off in that kind of society.  It’s just that the only viewpoint for their success is being held aloft above their peers, in some way.  In a better world where everyone would be given enough to be happy and secure, people like Boscha can’t track their own progress and self-worth.

How many friends does she really have left?

Remember the scenes with Boscha in “Any Sport in a Storm” When she was bothering Lumity while they are trying to get people to join there “Azura Book Club“. Some people, myself included, picked up on how hard she was making fun of the books but still took one and started reciting it in public, a few even pointed out how her eyes were closed at that she was likely doing it from memory. Secret Azura fan Boshca confirmed!

But then Amity shows up to tell Luz that Azura’s author is doing a book signing that day and the pair leave Boshca to attend. (If Boscha could not verbalize wanting to join their club, there is no way she could verbalize wanting t go with them). Boscha yells out “you two aren’t cute!” (Lie) and “I still have more friends than you!”... possible lie when you look at how her social circle has been diminishing.

In season one Boscha is either leader of the cool girls/ mean girls, or co-leaders with Amity, I don’t fully remember which. She is the Top athlete in school, and more than likely a pretty powerful potions witch. Grudgby is the first episode to really explore Boscha’s mindset and it is mentioned in that that while she is celebrated around Hexside for her skills and accomplishment on the field, she is also feared for her strength and aggression on and off the field. It is also mentioned that Boscha is okay with that, uses it as an edge if you will. Fine, whatever, its her life, I am not a jock. From an outside looking in perspective it seems like all of Boscha’s inner circle of friends are people friends people who play on her team, used to play, or people she knew for years.

Amity and Skara are her best friends in season 1. Amity is an interesting case because she quite the Grudgby team a year ago, giving Boscha her spot as Captain. Boscha is quit possibly a better captain than Amity was. Yet Boscha still remains friends with Amity and in the beginning would take taunts from her and suck up to her. Whatever reason (possibly their mothers, possibly their school image) the two stayed friends after Amity quit, is rendered unimportant though as Amity begins pulling away from Boscha after “Understanding Willow”, calling her actions and the way she scares people around school “pathetic and childish”.  Boscha cares at first, but when Amity comes to Luz and Willows aid on the Grudgby field against Boscha the two’s friendship is effectively severed.

Skara is Boscha’s oldest friend, and while she has always been the sweet to Boscha’s sour, complimenting people she knows Boscha doesn’t like, and in some cases even trying to give people Boscha wants to embarrass outs, she has never before openly opposed her. Boscha has always seemed to important to Skara to cross... or at least she was before. In “Any Sport in a Storm” Skara is shown having left Grudgeby and Joins Willow’s flyer derby team. Definitely a hard pill for Boscha to swallow. After joining the flyer derby team Skara becomes new BFF’s with Viney, another pill for Boshca.  Labyrinth runners opens with Skara walking the halls with Cat and Bo,happily chatting, so we know she is still friends with them, They both seem like good friends. But she is noticeably standing on the opposite side of the crowed from Boscha and the pair do not interact at all; adding to the theory that the two girls had a falling out sometime off screen.

That would leave Boscha with just Amelia (green haired plant track student) and Cat (darker skinned healing track student square glasses) as friends. Amelia has been absent from all of season 2. She has not been seen hanging out with her old crew, or sitting in class, or walking around town. This all sounds like she moved to a new part of the titan and no longer attends Hexside.  Good-bye Amelia, it would have been nice to know more about you. Cat has made a few cameo’s: One in “Any Sport in a Storm” where she is standing in a crowd watching Hunter air surf, though she does not join the team. Next in Labyrinth runners she is seen spending time with Skara and Bo before school, then is in the healing homeroom taking care of the students who are hiding there. In none of these cameo’s is she anywhere near Boscha. Cat’s wiki says she is the new girl to the popular group, Amity’s replacement for the Grudgby team. She has also always been really quiet around Boscha. She may have actually been scared of Boscha herself.

These are the only friends Boscha is shown to have. I mean she gets a photo of herself taken at Grom with Selene and Bo, but Selene never talks to the popular girls outside of that one scene. Bo was never portrayed as one of their group. In season 1 she is shown practicing magic with Skara, when Skara isn’t around Boscha or Amity, and she may have formed a friendship with Cat by season 2, But those are the only two she seems to see as Friends.   In conclusion the mighty have fallen, and Boscha may actually not have any friends left. Amity and Skara do not seem to want to be her friends anymore, Amelia is gone, her and Cat were not close. She may have wanted to join a new club as a way to look for new friends, but she did not know how to ask for help or a chance. I am almost sad for her.

What are the chances that Hunter will have yet again a slightly different outfit/look the next time we see him. Hopefully he has at least gotten clean by the time we see him again. Bump you better have shown him where the school shower is.

I hope he’s at least been able to shower. Get some sleep. Some proper food. I wouldn’t be surprised if he picks up his armor (the one that goes under the tunic) because, as much as he wants to put the past behind him, the golden guard’s expertise in fighting is what they need, and this isn’t a couple of scouts. this is WAR, he’s facing off against the whole COVEN and he needs every bit of protection he can get. Maybe he and the entrails make it green, though, or otherwise decorate to make it their own :)

i saw the collection of art displayed at the gallery nucleus event and ive been obsessed with these two pictures since so here are some details i noticed:

luz and eda are both wearing that grudgeby jacket, obviously.

Eda’s jacket has a patch on the left elbow when eda is wearing it. this was shown in the show as well. luz’s left elbow isn’t shown but we can assume the patch is still there.

luz, however, has a patch on her right elbow, which was where she tore the sleeve during the belos fight in king’s tide. we can assume hunter probably patched it up.

lilith and eda seem to have discovered their fashion taste in their teens and stuck with it to this day. lilith is in a similar long skirt and boots to what she wears in the show, and eda has the spiky/torn style dress look. guess she later decided to wear similar shoes to lilith though.

speaking of shoes though raine honey what are you wearing,,,, are those ,,,shoelaces tied around your socks??? that can’t be comfortable or easy to get on/off,,,was this a fashion trend in their time???

gus’s shirt looks like it was two different shirts sewn into one shirt. i assume hunter did that for him too

gus is also still wearing two watches on one wrist and probably wearing the third on his other. boi’s got drip

vee’s got an anklet. I wonder if this is an allusion to the ring on her tail in her basilisk form?

luz has the portal key and a king-shaped keychain on her belt. does that mean they’ll end the show with her having a new portal so she can live in both worlds? that seems to be what the show is building towards

amity’s hair faded in season 3 and her roots were growing back but i think in here she redyed her hair to be a bright pink like before? i definitely don’t see her roots anymore. similarly i think willow has just been consistently dyeing that green streak

darius’s cape looks a lot like the golden guard’s. or just the emperor coven’s cape in general. his boots also look like the standard issue EC uniform ones. in fact, his whole outfit looks like a more casual emperor coven uniform. this adds fuel to my theory that he was being mentored by the golden guard to join the emperor’s coven, and when his mentor died, it shattered his trust in the EC which led to him joining the abomination coven instead. (why else would you get one of the top ranking officials of the emperor coven to mentor you, if not to join the coven itself?)

lilith and vee both have cute stylized backpacks and perry has a fanny pack, all of them shaped like demons. vee’s backpack is shaped like her (with a matching hoodie i think?), and because of the visible stitches, i will once again assume hunter made it for her. i will assume hunter did everything sewing-related for the hexsquad. love is stored in the hunter sewing project

in contrast to lilith, perry, and vee, alador’s bag is plain and practical. idk what this says about the characterization of these four but im sure it says something

everyone in the old hexsquad has their own style but alador is in his hexside uniform. again, very practical but he doesn’t seem to care enough about appearance (or hygiene considering he’s covered in abomination goo) to pursue anything beyond practicality

eda’s knee is scraped up. while this and the bandage on her face are probably supposed to indicate that she gets up to trouble a lot id like to think it’s also referencing the pain sharing spell she and lilith did in that scene of them as kids

hunter DEFINITELY did not dress himself those shoes are way too snazzy. darius sees him trying to leave the house in socks and sandals and has an aneurysm

ppl mentioned how willow’s wearing an emerald entrails shirt but also! she has painted nails! i’d like to think amity painted them for her. first amity does her braids and now she paints her nails she is rekindling their friendship one makeover at a time

hunter wears glasses now. i guess after like 8 head injuries, a possession, and two eye color changes he’d have some trouble with his eyesight.

willow has discovered novelty glasses. she seems to be seeing fine so i assume they’re also prescription glasses, which is harder to get in cool shapes. did they get those in the human world or did the boiling isles already have them? or better, after the show they introduce the concept of novelty glasses to the boiling isles. i’d like to think gus gets his dad a pair in that scenario. and eda gets raine a pair

hunter’s jacket has so many references on it to his new family i- 🥺 🥺 🥺 he has a wing patch for flapjack, an abomination with a ponytail for darius, a king patch for king (let them interact in the rest of season 3!!! please!!!), what seems to be the badge eda gives people for leaving their covens, and a flower probably for willow. seemingly no patches for luz, gus, amity, or vee. or the emerald entrails. though he could have more patches on the front of his jacket.

luz’s hairstyle with the front bangs swept back looks a lot like eda’s hairstyle but curlier. probably just the widow’s peak though

hunter is still rocking that mullet. i know even if they change his hair in a later episode they won’t spoil it in the art here. still even though i know why hunter didn’t want long hair i liked his longer hair + hair skrungly design better than his short hair design

the new hexsquad is dressed in a significantly more human style than the old hexsquad. seeing how luz has a portal key (idk if its real or just a charm), amity retouched her roots, and hunter has a jacket of patches referencing his 86 adopted family members, i would assume this shot of them is post-canon. guess luz takes her friends on another trip to the thrift store

(i know this specific scene where the new and old hexsquad check each other out is impossible temporally within canon what i mean is the hexsquad’s look is most likely something they’ll whip up post canon than during canon)

willows pants have similar flowers on it as the flower patch on hunter’s jacket. the vine design and stitching around the flowers probably mean that they just came with a flower design when willow got it. however i headcanon that willow got hunter a bunch of flower shaped patches and he put one on his jacket. but later willow got a pair of those fashionably ripped jeans and left them somewhere where hunter found it. and when willow gets back hunter has used the rest of his his flower patches to patch up the rips in willows pants and sewed some stitching around the patches to make them look prettier. because he doesn’t understand why someone would wear ripped jeans on purpose. it’s like that one textpost with luz except it’s with willow. she can’t even be mad at him.

A Drabble a day Keeps the Depression at Bay Day 2: Raeda makes out under the bleachers (as teachers) and get caught by the grudgby team and Raine can't look at their students for days

"Raine? Are you okay?”

Raine coughed, glancing up at their students. Most of them seemed worried, but a few- specifically the ones on the Grudgeby team and their friends- were clearly laughing at them.

“I’m alright, Lexi, thank you for asking,” they answered, turning to write something on the board so they didn’t have to look out at the young faces staring back at them.

“Are you sure? Your face is red.” Raine felt their face flush, and they started to regret agreeing to teach for Eda.

“I think they’re embarrassed,” Raine recognized the voice of one of the players that had caught them and cringed, terrified of what they’d say next. “That would explain why they won’t look at us, too.”

“Are you embarrassed, Mx. Raine?” came the voice of another player. Raine could hear the grin in their voice, and they had to take a couple deep breaths to prepare themselves.

“No, I’m fine,” they said. finally turning around. Now every single eye in the room was trained on them, and all Raine wanted to do was sink onto the floor and disappear.

“Why are you embarrassed?” Lexi asked. She really was so sweet, but sometimes Raine wished she wasn’t so damn empathetic.

“I’m not-”

“They’re embarrassed because we caught them making out with Eda under the bleachers!”

Raine groaned, collapsing into their chair and dropping their head in their hands. The classroom was suddenly filled with noise, and Raine knew it would be almost impossible to quiet them down in time to start the lesson.

“Get it Raine!”

“Ew, the bleachers? Really?”

“Is that why you haven’t graded my paper yet?”

“Okay, quiet, everyone, quiet!” It took another twenty seconds, but eventually their students stopped talking. “I will answer two questions, and that is it. You have two minutes to figure out what you want to ask.” The buzz started again, but this time it was much quieter. Raine sighed, wondering what they’d done to offend Papa Titan so much.

“We have our questions!”

Raine looked up, adjusting their glasses. “Fine, first one.”

“Was that the first time you and Eda defiled our bleachers?”

Raine sighed again. “Yes,” they said. “It was.”

“And does the fang make making out hard?”

Raine went bright red, and they coughed uncomfortably. “I’m not answering that.”

“C’mon,” someone whined, “You have to!”

“Yeah, Raine, answer us!”

“Tell us!”

“I’ll turn in my homework on time for a month if you do!”

“Please?”

“Fine!” they called, shouting to be heard. “Fine, no it doesn’t make… it… harder.” They looked around the room at their students’ faces, and they all seemed pleased. Good. “Now, can we please talk about bard magic and not my sex life?”

“Wait, you guys had sex under the bleachers?”

“No!”

The more we see of Skara, the more it’s becoming obvious (to me) that even though she hung out with the Mean Girls (tm) she wasn’t really One of Them.

She was definitely part of the group--she hung out with Boscha/Amity, she was at the moonlight conjuring with them, she was on the Grudgeby team, her party invites were exclusive and sought after and given to people like Boscha and Amity, and she laughed along when Boscha bullied Willow-- but she doesn’t seem to quite fit in with them.

The earliest example of this is the “Friendship is the real magic!” scene. Said by Skara, hugging a witch who we never really see hanging out with the main gang, while they practice magic together. Noooooot behavior typical of a Boscha elite squad member.

One of the most obvious examples is, of course, Any Sport in a Storm. Skara, previously assumed to be a bit of an airhead bully, turns out to be a tactical genius. And she’s not above hanging out with the “wrong” people to do what she loves. Pretty much everyone on Willow’s team is undeniably a “loser” in the school’s social hierarchy, with the exception of Skara. Boscha would probably rather disband her grudgeby team than play with people like them, but Skara doesn’t mind who she plays with as long as she gets to play. She gets along well with them. I’ve seen posts saying that seeing Amity break away encouraged Skara to do the same, and I 100% agree with that, she definitely did, but I have one more piece of evidence to support that while Skara was in the group, she wasn’t part of the group, possibly encouraging her to break away:

Boscha’s arc revolves around her being upset that Amelia and Cat, former members of her gang, have been taken by the Collector and begging Amity to stay because she misses what they had. Why is this important? Well, friends, Skara is right there. Despite being a member of Boscha’s original squad, Skara isn’t more highly ranking than anyone else. She doesn’t have Boscha’s ear. Boscha didn’t even mention her in the tunnel, just saying that everyone’s “gone” even though Skara is still there. And despite the fact that Amity very ACTIVELY stopped hanging out with Boscha and even sided against her, while Skara didn’t, Boscha acts like Amity is her last hope to have things the way they were. While Skara is literally in Hexside, right there if Boscha wants someone from her old gang. And has been. Ergo; Boscha doesn’t really consider Skara as one of her closest old friends the way she views Amity, Cat, and Amelia. Skara was never really part of the gang, not to Boscha. She was just... there.

Hear me out here, the reason bump is so chill about Boscha's shenanigans is because she's a red headed potions track grudgeby player, she's a far less chaotic replacement gold fish for Eda.

I never thought about this but SCREAMING, he went "she's mean but she's not going to jail, so I guess it's a fair trade"

I made fankids for Robyn and Vitimir! Meet Vitani and Alto!

Vitani is the older sibling, training in the Potions, Bard, and Plant tracks in school. She also has Vitimir's toxic breath, but since she's young and a late bloomer, it's super mild. Speaking of late bloomer, she is also a bit weak magic-wise, which causes her to compare herself to her dads and call herself half-a-witch. She eventually does get stronger, but it takes some time.

Alto is the younger sibling, training in the Bard and Construction tracks in school. He was named after Robyn's father, who had passed away before he was born. Unlike Vitani, he is strong magic-wise and is encouraged by his school to join their grudgeby team, but he likes curling up in the library with a book instead. Because of his magic abilities, Vitani is hard on herself even more, but Robyn grounds her with some reassurance.
