-> hermaphrodite slur reclaimed flag
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ ID 1: a flag with five horizontal stripes, in the following colors: light indigo, indigo, yellow, dark red and light red. /End ID ]
[ ID 2: a flag with six horizontal stripes, in the following colors: light indigo, indigo, yellow, dark red, light red and light orange. /End ID ]
- a flag for intersex people who reclaim the slur "hermaphrodite", which is commonly defined as "someone who has male and female sexual characteristics, usually clearly, combined".
it's been historically used in a very derogatory way towards intersex people, and is also usually seen as an inaccurate way to define the entire spectrum of intersex experiences. however, some intersex people may want to reclaim this slur and describe themselves with it, for whatever reason, and that's why this flag was made. (Though you don't need to use the flag to reclaim it, obviously)
- disclaimer: exclusive to intersex people.

Hi! Genuine question because my sibling is intersex. Also if you don't have the spoons to answer that's okay. Take your time or feel free to ignore me. :)
She said H*rmaphrodite is a specific type of intersex in which one has both sets of genitalia which one or both may have full function.
She never called it a slur around me, just a specific term that should not be replaced with Intersex, as Intersex is an umbrella term, and it's inappropriate to call all intersex people that when it only as a medical term applies to a small subset of intersex people.
Is this correct? I try to stay up to date and informed but when different intersex people give different answers, I don't know who to listen to and trying to research the topic leads to a thousand different answers on what the issue is or isn't.
Thank you for your time!
So this is a weird one. Your sibling is kinda right in that there is an intersex condition medically referred to as 'true hermaphroditism' which involves having ovotestes, which are essentially just made up of both ovarian and testicular tissue in varying amounts.
However, people are moving away from that and using 'ovotesticular syndrome' or 'ovotesticular DSD' as the name instead because of the issues surrounding hermaphrodite as a term. While there aren't enough studies to truly say its very unlikely that someone with ovotestes will produce both viable sperm and viable eggs, you'd need the perfect amounts of tissue and to have external gonads to prevent heat killing off sperm, and then somehow the right levels of hormones to produce either in the first place. Which isn't to say it's absolutely impossible, especially with advancing fertility treatments, just that the chances are astronomically small. A large majority of people with ovotestes are infertile as a result. The term 'hermaphrodite' would imply otherwise and actual true hermaphroditism like is observed in certain animals is considered something that cannot occur in humans, and as a result the term is being phased out of medical literature.
There's also the issue of the implications that people with ovotestes are somehow 'more intersex' than anyone else, which is obviously not true. You can't be more or less intersex than any other intersex person.
To try and sum it up, you shouldn't be calling anyone a hermaphrodite, ovotestes or not, unless they tell you it's alright. Anyone who is intersex can call themselves a hermaphrodite if they wish, as its historically been used to refer to and dehumanize all intersex folks (including calling many 'close-to-female' intersex folks, especially those with clitoromegaly, 'pseudo-hermaphrodites'). It is unfortunately still used in some medical practice and is often used as grounds to perform non consensual surgeries and hormone treatments and so it can be incredibly distressing to have to hear for some folks.
I should add there are also a number of 'dyadic-passing' (for lack of a better word. This is NOT me saying being 'dyadic-passing' is bad or inherently leads to this kind of thinking.) intersex folks that are actually fairly intersexist and will use terms like this to go "oh I'm just normal intersex, not an Actual Hermaphrodite like (insert group of 'less desirable' intersex people)" a little bit like how some gay men will throw more flamboyant gay men under the bus to try and seem like 'one of the good ones' etc.

I have reclaimed the words you've used against me, and the one you tried to take from me. I live in shame no longer, I am at peace with who I am. This is me, and I will proudly claim so.

Intersex people by all means are allowed to not want to be considered LGBT+ for being intersex and to not believe intersex is LGBT+, it is not something that you can force someone to change their perception on if they truly are uncomfortable with it.
That being said, I take huge issue with LGBT+ members who make fun of adding an I at the end, or claim to say intersex people tell you not to. Not only does this tell me you get all your information on intersex people from tumblr/twitter posts, it tells me you do not care to find out about your shared history with intersex people and that you do not see us as important, and to an extent maybe you don’t want to admit the social stigma and oppression that intersex people face (CW I will be talking about IGM).
Intersex activists have been considering intersex to be LGBT+ or queer for decades, and for a long time invasive genital mutilation on intersex infants relied on telling parents that if they did not have surgery that their children would be “homosexual” and that they should pray that their children grow up to be “normal” to paraphrase by Cheryl Chase in “Intersex Activism and Psychology: Opening a Dialogue on Theory, Research, and Clinical Practice” (Hegarty, 2000). This isn’t coming from a cishet intersex person either, last I checked Cheryl Chase identified as a lesbian, and many intersex people I meet are also not cisgender and heterosexual.
Not to mention my own personal experience, where when I spoke on the 2018 Moving Trans History Forwards youth panel hosted by the Transgender Archives (look them up if you don’t know), and upon looking at their saved stories found multiple instances of them claiming intersex stories (sometimes graphic) to be TRANS stories. They were very obviously glorifying the “transition” of intersex infants, yet there was no mention at all of the word intersex or even h*rmaphrodite for that matter (shocking considering the time period most of the stories were from).
What this tells me is that intersex people have been included in LGBT+ history and spaces whether we choose to be or not. It literally is not our choice to be included because we will be forced into said category by LGBT+ dyadic members, by doctors, and by society at large. So we can choose to not label our experiences as LGBT+ if we so choose, that is not up to dyadic LGBT+ members to decide, but the moment you make fun of it as if it is some funny internet discourse you are telling intersex people that you don’t give a fuck about us or our oppression. AND since recently we got an ask about this, I am not saying it is a choice to be gay (as an umbrella term) or trans, what I am saying is that intersex inclusion is not as easy as people are treating it.
This is not about if or if not you should include an I, but what I AM saying is that you have to really look at it and consider why you talk about intersex inclusion the way you do and the implications in that. What I’ve said here is not even surface level of intersex history.

TW: f slur, d slur, q slur, h slur.
As language evolves, there’s a growing movement to take once offensive and oppressive language (slurs) and reappropriate them. Reappropriation is the process of re-evaluating a term that is, or was, pejorative and bringing it back into acceptable usage. A reclaimed word can have neutral or acceptable connotations, but more widely, the words are often given a positive meaning within the community reclaiming it. As such, those outside the community using the word is still seen as derogatory.
The LGBTQ+ community has a vast variety of reclaimed slurs, and this is mostly because there’s been so many slurs thrown at the community over the years. Words like ‘f*g’, ‘d*ke’, ‘h*mo’, and ‘queer’ have all once been used said with disdain, a way to oppress. But the community has taken them back, made them into an identity of which one can be proud. A lot of people have started using ‘queer’ as an umbrella term, using it in place of ‘gay’ or ‘LGBTQ+’. And while it’s fine on an individual level to reclaim queer, applying it in a broader sense is a problem.
There are plenty of people who haven’t reclaimed the slur for themselves, and still view it as something hurtful. And while you can argue and debate all you want, it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t want you to call me queer.
I shouldn’t have to give you some long drawn out explanation on why I don’t feel comfortable with the word queer. I don’t want to tell everyone who argues with me about how it felt to hear my deeply homophobic grandmother use the word queer as an insult and tell me that all “queers” were going to burn in hell for their sins. No one should have to justify their feelings about a word that’s still used as a slur against the LGBTQ+ community.
Reclaiming it on an individual level is great! And that’s how it should be. There isn’t a universal experience within the LGBTQ+ community. Our experiences differ vastly based on our personal identity and environment. So, there shouldn’t be a vast movement for everyone to reclaim a slur, because you can’t know how someone else feels about that slur. You can’t know how that slur has been used against them.
When someone tells you they don’t want you to call them ‘queer’, your response shouldn’t be indignation. You shouldn’t break out some pseudo facts, anecdotes you heard but have no real source for. Your response should be acceptance and understanding. You should be able to recognize that not everyone had the same experience with the word that you did. Not everyone is going to want to reclaim the slur either. And that’s okay.

I don't mean any harm by asking this, but what is the reasoning behind the "h slur" being a thing? Isn't that what we are, like straight people are hetero? It's like...I don't know, the baseline definition, if that makes any sense. Is it just the context that matters, or is it sworn off completely? Have a lovely day
anonymous asked:
i feel like this is a dumb question but how in the heck is homosexual a slur???
(answering these together. tw: homophobia, conversion therapy)
the h word is mostly used in a hurtful context by straight people. homophobic pastors, for example, use the h word to refer to gay people, rather than calling us gay. it’s also the word a lot of conversion therapists use to describe gay people (speaking as someone who’s been to conversion therapy).
a gay person can reclaim it, and many do. the h word has a history of dehumanization. it was the “medical diagnosis” that allowed gay people to be forced into “treatment”. lots of people say “it’s just the scientific/medical term”, so it’s fine, but i don’t think it’s difficult to imagine why gay people might not be comfortable with being referred to with a medical term.
whether a gay individual is uncomfortable with it or not, it makes a lot of people (myself included) very uncomfortable and is even a trigger for some. so it’s still good to tag it.
- jay
