My uncontrollable urge to pull up and read the entire wikipedia page on spiderman every couple of hours is really messing with my cool girl persona

#BREAKING NEWS: local teen masquerades as normal girl to gain highschool popularity; is thwarted by inherent strangeness #its a problem guys i go to my sleepover with 10 other girls and pretend to know things about lululemon and harry styles #and then i come home and spend an hour ranting to my sister about the queer themes in the frankenstein story and shark teeth #and how we would fit into the multiverse in the spiderman into the spiderverse movies and shit idk how much longer i can keep the up #thats not to say i dont love my freinds i do love my freinds even the super basic ones (and being basic isn't a bad thing if your having fun #but good lord the lululemon store is not my natural habitat i'm doing s good job at hiding but i'm far too deranged for this really

there was a hawkfish at the store I pet store I worked at that had been there for 5+ years and the head of the department and I were having a conversation about how glibly people will speak about the fish that have died in their care (it was so common to have a parent come in and "replace" all the pleco's because they messed up while cleaning the tank and the kids due home from school in a few hours) and what kind of policy we could potentially have to educate and curb the idea that we would just keep supplying new fish when there was clearly a lack of willingness to change behaviors (like the same people would come in over and over and laugh about "accidentally" killing another beta fish and it's like maybe don't say that so loudly and unashamedly in the place you're coming to get another one) anyway the guy pointed to the hawkfish and reminded me that the fish was smarter than any of the other pets in the store but because we couldn't hear it speak we didn't honor it's intelligence and i just think about fish and their lives a lot differently after that

#and not just fish but babies and non-verbal folks who people don't treat with any dignity just because they're non-verbal!!! #re: the pet store I was also fully obsessed in the weirdest way with the eel that we had #i called him macaroni cuz he was a real noodly dude and he freaked me out but i loved him #there was also a lungfish named kyle and that thing was COOL #that pet store was such a wild expirience #like everyone understood the store parrot was smart and deserved respect #and also the amount of dog owners who thought it was ~funny to hold their dog up to the guinea pig cages and let them bark was #shcoking to say the least!! #there were signs literally EVERYWHERE about not bringing your dog in the cat adoption/small animal/bird area #but also like kids would run into rosies cage all the time #and she could easily take a chunk outta ya like full finger removal with one swift bite #anyway all pets are deserving of love care and devotion #and they deserve us being open to learning animal husbandry because it's not an inherited skill and there's always new info about nutrition #and like recommended habitats and enrichment oppurtunities!

This is a tribute to Peter Benchley, not the movie Jaws (1975)

The author of 'Jaws' dedicated the rest of his life to reversing the unexpected negative impact his book had on the image of sharks.

Not only were sharks supposedly killed to create props for the movie, but 'Jaws' ended up awakening a bloody sea of ignorance in people at the time, who, haunted by an irrational fear and lack of understanding about marine predators, felt motivated to take to their boats and kill thousands of great white sharks in the most feared ways.

Such as the promotion of great white shark hunting championships that targeted the biggest ones, which were mostly pregnant females who, after being displayed as a trophy, had their jaws ripped off and their bodies discarded in the garbage.

Fear spread widely to all shark species, creating a lack of sensitivity that made it convenient to exterminate entire shark populations around the world that for a long time remained invisible to people's perception.

And this has continued to resonate for a long time with the entertainment media perpetuating the portrayal of sharks as monsters, newspapers favoring sensationalism about shark incidents, governments promoting shark culls, the advance of the unregulated predatory fishing industry, scientists not being supported in their studies of marine predators, the destruction of their natural habitats and the pollution of the oceans.

For thousands of years, sharks have taken care of the health of our oceans, older than the dinosaurs or the first trees, they have gone through great mass extinctions, they have been worshipped and respected as gods and guardians by oceanic peoples and now we demonize them in our media and exterminate them by the millions every year, who is the real monster?

We are shark-eaters.
