The language emerged from contact between French settlers and enslaved Africans during the Atlantic slave trade in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Although its vocabulary largely derives from 18th-century French, its grammar is that of a West African Volta-Congo language branch, particularly the Fongbe and Igbo languages. It also has influences from Spanish, English, Portuguese, Taino, and other West African languages.
It is not mutually intelligible with standard French, and has its own distinctive grammar. Haitians are the largest community in the world speaking a modern creole language, according to some sources.
However, this is disputable, as Nigerian Pidgin, an English-based Creole language, is attested by some sources to have a larger number of speakers than that of Haitian Creole and other French-based Creole languages, particularly if non-native speakers are included.

Soup Joumou
220 years of independence, a soup once forbidden to eat by the slaves who made it for their masters. The first of every year we celebrate a few different ways but always with a bowl of Soup Joumou.
My Mom has always made a huge batch to share, but this year I took over. Based by tradition, a few tweaks on technique but still made with all of the rebellious fire of those who came before me. 🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹

──★ so this inspired by Jungkook’s Seven MV also I’m a sucker for Ao’nung and this fucking trope so why not! I’m actually really excited for this it’s been such a long time since I’ve written for a fanfic and after rewatching atwow it kinda awoke something in me to write something again!
I wrote this with a latina reader in mind cause of Zoe Saldaña and headcanon that Modern!Neytiri would be a mix of Caribbean and Indigenous Latino (Dominican or Haitian). The reader’s physical appearance will not described as Latinos come in a variety of different colors, shapes, and cultures and is a very very diverse community i hope that this doesn’t take away anyone’s experience reading this!
I also wanna know your guys option on the banner that I made it was kinda in a rush might change it later on but we’ll see how it holds up for now! happy reading ૮ ˶ˆ ﻌ ˆ˶ ა

Weapon X-Men #3
Here's a fun reference-- in the 70s and 80s, the Comics Code Authority forbade the depiction of zombies and other horror-genre staples. Comic book writers would come up with creative names and substitutes for these forbidden subjects, so that they could tell the stories they wanted without breaking the rules. That's part of why there are so many different versions of the devil in Marvel canon-- you couldn't put "Satan" in a story, but you could "Mephisto."
Anyways, the word "zuvembie"-- which was borrowed from a 1938 short story by Conan creator Robert E. Howard-- was used as a substitute for "zombie" up until the 90s. I always say that comics re a microcosm of pop culture, and this is a great example-- zombies and voodoo are popular subjects in American horror media, and that has always been reflected in supernatural and horror-themed comic books. Those depictions are often just as racist and ignorant as you'd expect, including the character Black Talon, who Dracula mentions here.
Fortunately, in recent years, characters like Doctor Voodoo and Zoe Laveau have given both Haitian and Louisiana vodou a much better reputation in the Marvel world, and writers seem to be a little more wary of using those old, problematic tropes. Much like my feelings on Romani characters and witchcraft, I'm hoping that we'll one day get to see actual cultural restitution on the page.
