Is Liverpool a welcoming place for asylum seekers and refugees?

Historically, as a port city, Liverpool has welcomed people

from around the world and has taken pride in its reputation for hospitality and friendliness. Going against the status quo seems to be a natural pastime for Scousers and through the years the city has found a way to integrate new communities. Although this hasn’t been without its difficulties, Liverpool’s perseverance has paid off and we are now one of the most exciting and vibrant cities in Europe.

This project was developed to offer an insight into the lived experiences of asylum seekers and refugees who are dispersed to Liverpool. All photographs in this exhibition were taken by members of the refugee and asylum seeker community of Liverpool as part of a participatory photography project. Our desire as a group is to provoke questions about how welcoming a place Liverpool is today for new people seeking sanctuary in the city.

It can be difficult to put yourself into the shoes of someone who has fled persecution, but try to imagine being compelled to leave your home, family, job, everything you ever dreamed of for your future, because you fear for your life or your freedom. Imagine then arriving in a new country with an unfamiliar culture, which at times is openly hostile towards you.

Hopefully these photographs will give some insight into the day to day challenges and successes that are experienced by individuals as they actively try to integrate into the city. The photographers invite you, with their images of both the welcoming and unwelcoming sides of Liverpool, to see your city from another perspective.
