Real talk, but I hope I don't ever cross the line where I end up kinning from absolutely every single source I consume. I've heard people say that becoming a problem before, and I've always watched from the sidelines as people really did just go through a hyperfocus, and go through a crisis when they realize they can't tell the difference anymore, if they could at all. It's a scary thought, to have that much self doubt, and to have the self be so easily destroyed and reattached through the lens of the traits you liked in someone else from another life, that you saw them just being themselves and got reactions, that you want, for yourself, compared to the ones you're already experiencing in this life and body. How many of you go through that hyperfocus and feel like you are falling back into place, like a long lost puzzle piece, only for that hole to grow back over time and needing to be filled by the next big thing that blows up. Sometimes that hole grows back so strong, it completely eats up who you could have been in this life, and you lose that opportunity all together. Too busy playing repeat on a life already spent and dead, just to feel like you belong. But that belonging is just a mimicking of a former life, and that was then. What will you make of now? My kins, have only ever been from things that I had memories from and evidence from in childhood. There has never been a point in my life that I question my kins, or search, because that, to me, will create the false positive. I've always had beyond specific things that never left any doubt. Never left any hole or any longing or any needing. I already know my stories, and I know why I'm here now, and it's sure as hell not to skeleton my life around an existence that is very intentionally no longer mine. I died, I moved on. I'm here now, and my kins served the purposes they need to, which is just holding memories that will help me be a better person, and lead this world into a better future and leave it better than I found it. I couldn't imagine having an identity crisis everytime I wanted to watch a new show or something, out of the fear of 'oh I know I'll kin or get a fictive from this source and it'll change me' because holy shit if you're that fragile.. 😬

Though I'll be honest, I love watching you guys and your funny little brains. If you didn't already know: calling certain kinds of art 'degenerate', 'gross', and/or 'sick' is a nazi/fascist dogwhistle, and it's related to their pro-eugenics narrative.

Hitler reviewed selected artworks the month before it opened. He furiously ordered the removal of many examples of German avant-garde art. Goebbels witnessed this outburst and began making hasty plans for a separate exhibition. He intended to define and mock the types of art that the regime considered "degenerate." Hitler approved of the plan. The Nazis began confiscating thousands of artworks from German museums.

Roughly one third of the most valuable confiscated artworks were ultimately sold to enrich the Nazi regime. Another third of the artworks disappeared. Some have reemerged over the years. An Open Letter Regarding the Holocaust Inversion & Blood Libel of the “Average Pace” Meme:

The person who shared the screenshotted post deleted it after I sent the following message. I truly believe they shared it out of ignorance & not malice; I cannot say the same of OP who created the graphic. I am sharing my deconstruction of its rhetoric & imagery here as a learning opportunity:

Nothing justifies the injustices Palestinians have faced, and what Netanyahu is doing is vile. No country should be above criticism, nor its leaders above condemnation, but this is not that.

What people like OP are doing is weaponizing legitimate atrocities to spread the antisemitic narratives of Holocaust Inversion (an offshoot of Holocaust Revision & Denial that claims “The new Nazis are Jews”) and Blood Libel.

And no, the fact that these libels are made in criticism of Israel does not absolve them of being antisemitic narratives that predate the existence of the State of Israel. As if to hammer in that point, that is not the flag of Israel that the creator of this agitprop decided to equate to the Swastika—that is the Magen David. That’s just the symbol for Judaism.

Worse, to impose the Magen David over images of blood (especially what is implicitly the blood of children) is a direct invocation of Blood Libel, the antisemitic accusation that Jewish leaders thirst for the blood of children. This libel has incited the mass slaughter of Jews since long before the Shoah, and is still being used to this day to incite violence against Jews through Qanon & accusations that Israelis drink & bathe in Palestinian blood.

And if it truly weren’t about the Jewishness of Israel, why would OP pick the Shoah specifically? There have been countless other mass killings in the world, many with much greater resemblance to Israel/Palestine than Jews in Nazi Germany (see: ethnic cleansings in Liberia & India/Pakistan for instance). Meanwhile, the only things The Shoah/WWII and Israel-Palestine have in common is people dying and Jews being present. So why specifically invoke the slaughter of Jews to criticize Israel if it is not about invoking the Jewishness of Israel?

That doesn’t even get into how cherrypicked those numbers are to the point the exact same “average pace” metric could easily be used (and in fact is, by the German far-right) to present the Bombing of Dresden by the Allies—a campaign that killed more than 25,000 German civilians in 72 hours in an area much bigger & less densely populated than Gaza with a fraction of the bombs that Israel has used—as comparable to the death camps.

This rhetoric does not aid Palestinians in any way. In fact it drags the movement down by providing ammunition that can be used to paint all criticism of Israel as antisemitic & give people who just hate Palestinians the casus belli they need to shut it down. The only thing it accomplishes is hurting Jews; it twists the knife in the wounds left in our community, it trivializes the Shoah by universalizing it or presenting it as “the lesser of two evils”, and it incites violence by equating Jews to Nazis.

So I’ve heard. Interesting revision of history.

Röhm was executed because Hitler was a paranoid lunatic and because Röhm was a homosexual. He and Hitler were buddy buddy enough that he reportedly hesitated to issue the order to execute Röhm, and Röhm responded to the order in defiance, demanding Hitler kill him with his own hand if that was what he truly wanted. His demand was ignored and the SS shot him themselves.

It’s one of those stories that’s interesting from a historian standpoint, but it’s best to leave it as it is in an age where people deny the Holocaust even happened. I will say that the Nazi party was largely not comprised of homosexuals since they put most queers in extermination camps. It’s just a bizarre claim, not much different than claiming the Nazi party was full of Jews. I’m sure there were homosexuals who played along out of self-preservation, but it certainly wasn’t common. Röhm was proof of one thing if nothing else, even homosexuals Hitler pardoned at one point were not to be tolerated by the mid to late 30s. Saying that he was executed for being fat is a tad absurd if nothing else just because he was about the same body type as Hitler.

He was executed just shy of a year after this photo was taken, that wasn’t the problem. Röhm was likely killed because he only referred to Hitler by first name, or by “Adi”, rather than his title. There were rumors circulating that Hitler was a homosexual and having an affair with Röhm. Those rumors are the reason Röhm was executed. Were the rumors true? Doesn’t really matter. As I said, no reason to waste time forming headcanons on genocidal freaks who died almost a century ago.

Either way, weird revisionism to assert it was done because he was fat. The Nazis didn’t have a huge interest in executing people for being a bit chubby as long as they were white, heterosexual, cisgendered, Catholics. With a favoring to aryans of course.

So I’m listening to The History of the Second World War podcast rn. One of the things that made me do so was the fact that it spent three years on the run-up to the war, going into detailed examinations of the situation in many of the countries involved, the Spanish Civil War etc etc.

I’ve been furiously angry recently at people using the language of social justice to muddy the water against people calling out their actions and to attempt to cast themselves as victims while engaging in violence against marginalised people. I’ve pointed particularly at Gender Crits and at the State of Israel in this.

I studied appeasement in Higher History at school, but it never dived into the detail of primary sources the way this podcast did. And, being fair, I was a kid; that’s the year I turned 16. It was a long time ago and I knew a lot less then.

I *knew* that Hitler had used the excuse of ethnic German populations for Nazi invasions of other states, but I hadn’t heard the full detail of his speeches. The very explicit accusations of violence and persecution against ethnic Germans (I’m using this to mean people who spoke German dialects and had some kind of German cultural historical connection; I want to make it fucking *clear* that I am really interested in ideas of ethnogenesis and ethnicity as a cultural phenomenon without even *remotely* endorsing his *abhorrent* ideas about race) in these places while he and his government were systemically and overtly engaging in incredibly brutal persecution of this kind against Jewish folk and, to a lesser, but still “intermittently murdering people in the streets” extent, anyone they didn’t consider “ethnic Germans” in both Germany and everywhere they conquered.

The open, shameless projection of what they were openly and overtly doing themselves onto their victims.

And the worst fucking thing was that it *worked*, then. As it’s still working now.

I thought this active and purposeful appropriation of the language of human rights to justify violence and prevent them being opposed by others by bigots and oppressors was a reasonably new phenomenon. It turns out it absolutely isn’t. This began right after the first time language about things like ethnonational self-determination was first used on an institutional level. It’s never really existed on a scale where it could be used to empower populations without being twisted.

I don’t have a giant conclusion about this, btw; I write to fully process thoughts, feelings and ideas a lot.

I do feel this should mean a massive expansion in critical awareness when people use such language to justify their actions; “in what *way* do you support x people *but*?“ “You say you don’t hate x people but what I’m hearing is that you support actions that will absolutely involve widespread and potentially fatal violence against them/massively impact their human rights in x way: I need more information to clarify your position here”.

And yeah, a lot of this is aimed at people in positions of systemic power or authority at least as much as individuals; I’ve been somewhat on the end of institutions engaging so shallowly with rights-based language recently that it has absolutely highlighted how these tactics work and how they are used to entrench existing structures of power and abuse.
