comparing malevolent and venom (or: why private eyes and symbrock are the same ship in different fonts)

spoilers ahead for the venom movies, various venom comics, and s1 of malevolent!!

Arthur is a PI, Eddie is an investigative journalist. Both of them ran into their body mates through their investigations (specifically movies!Eddie, comics!Eddie does not share this origin)

The Entity takes the name John through experiences with Arthur. When Arthur is in a coma for a month, the nurses don’t know his name and refer to him as John Doe. The Entity notices this and finds solace in it. When Arthur wakes, the Entity tells Arthur to refer to him as John. In the Venom comics, their collective name “Venom” came from Eddie being deranged about losing his job as a reporter. He tells Peter to call them Venom, because that’s what he’s paid to write at the shitty tabloids he’s employed at.

Though the Venom Symbiote has a name from its home world, many characters throughout the comics refer to it as Venom, implying they kept the name Eddie gave them.

In episode 9, John and Arthur argue until they give each other the silent treatment, leading to them getting caught by the police because John did not warn him there were officers. After realizing they need to work together, John and Arthur escape from the officers (and the supernatural lake monster). Towards the end of that episode, John tells Arthur that “you and I are one, and I need to begin to see us as one.” In Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Venom and Eddie have a rather dramatic break up that ends with them separating from each other. Eddie then gets arrested and brought in as a suspect in Cletus Kassidy’s escape. Venom, in Anne’s body, comes back and breaks Eddie out of police custody. After some apologies from Eddie (though if you ask me Venom also should’ve been apologizing but alas) they bond with each other again. Later through the power of love symbiosis, Venom and Eddie acting as one are able to defeat Carnage.

In episode 12, it’s revealed that John is a fragment of The King In Yellow. The cult gives the King the ability to fully realize itself and take over Arthur’s body, but the King is unable to. The part of itself, John, has become so entangled with Arthur that it cannot fully erase Arthur from itself. In the Venom 2018-2021 run (I know, I’m drawing on Cates. i cannot believe I’m using him to prove a point), the King in Black, Knull, is trying to take over Earth. It corrupts symbiotes, makes them nothing more than servants for it. Knull was unable to corrupt the Venom symbiote specifically because it could not burn the light (Eddie) out of it.

Jessamine's design has always intrigued me. the stark, full black suit and tall collar are pretty obvious status symbols. black was for the longest time an incredibly expensive colour of fabric due to how difficult it was to achieve proper rich blackness during the dyeing process and the collar, while most likely just a trend in Dunwall fashion inspired by the 1890s high collars can be read as lace, especially in some concept art, which is hard to care for and needs to be starched to hell and back to keep nice and stiff for a collar like that

but what I find a lot more curious about this is that the clothes appear very much inspired by Spanish renaissance fashion

which, honestly, would make sense with the real world inspiration. 19th century was obsessed with the past, with the romanticized medieval and renaissance times, and it was quite common to see fashion inspired by times long past (I mean, just look at Worth. the man invented haute couture and there is so much influence of medieval and Elisabethan fashion in his designs). it was also a thing for rich families to just kinda... invest in recreations of historical pieces of clothing and LARP in them.

Jessamine's clothes, in particular, reminded me of Spanish court dresses. especially of the portraits of Anne of Austria and Elisabeth of Valois

obsessed with those slit sleeves. too bad Jessamine didn't go the extra mile to have the sleeves hang long and heavy around her arms but they were more form fitting

there is also something to be said about the tall white (possibly starched lace) collar and the style of clasps used on her clothes

the mini cape thing she has on top is more similar to the style of capes worn by men in renaissance, but yeah, of course she reminded me of a Spanish princess when this is one of the most given example portraits for this style

I wonder if this was an intentional choice on the designer's side or if they were just inspired by the revivalism present in 19th century fashion. what really makes me consider that though is that one of her earlier designs has those sleeves much, Much more pronounced and obvious

imagine a world where Slimecicle and Mariana are married and yes they still marital issues and everything but they have Juanaflippa and she had 2 moments where she almost never made it home due to something medically but she's there and she's their baby, their sweet daughter and Juanaflippa loves to watch her parents dance and sometimes dance with them.

yup this is what my head came up with before I passed out so here have a bit more to the Au I came up with in the late hours of 3 am!!!

Slimecicle and Mariana do jam skating (dance rollerskating) and their local rink does competitions for couples so missclickduo will do what they do best and be competitive as shit with each other and the other couples, especially one couple and that who are they? foolish and Vegetta of course! though foolish is new too it there still really good. But Juana will always say her parents are better and Leo will deny that like "NUHUH!!" yaknow silly things.

But Juana is adamant that she gets good at roller skating so Charlie and Mariana help her, even if every time Juana falls they can't help the but worry over her excessively because what if something goes wrong and she gets seriously hurt? But she's fine and everytime they go back home they watch Juanaflippa's favorite shows (bluey and sonic prime)

Charlie is a stay at home dad mostly though occasionally he coach's the local swim team and or soccer team and for Mariana? I'm not sure I haven't really decided lol

As someone who is on the ace spectrum (demiromantic and asexual), I really like when people write about some of my favorite characters having the same sexualities as me.

I do headcanon him as demiromantic, and also pansexual.

(Down below is me explaining him being demiromantic when it comes to his feelings and also Barry + Carol...)

HOWEVER, he is... as Ollie says a space tomcat, he takes on emotions much more seriously in my hc. He can do whatever, but when it comes to how he feels romantically it became a lot harder for him to express himself romantically too. <- Trouble with love genuinely but with trying to tell people anything related with love has been a topic for him. Which is also an explaination of the acts that he does for the people he cares about because it REPLACES him trying to explain his feelngs. When you think about it, the way Hal shows his love towards people or showing that he cares comes into a lot of wild acts or making sure that he'll come to the ends of the Earth when it comes to someone. (Like in your post, which I forgot to reblog and add to it :3, in DC vs Vampires, how Hal wanted to rule the world with Barry....) ------ Unrelated but related-- While yes, he does save people, Hal is deepened through emotional bonds both platonically and romantically... (I like to take this literal, as a form of being bonded by lantern ring emotion such as Carol with holding to Star Sapphire and Barry with being expressed by HAL to hold the mantle of hope, because it took years with these two for Hal to be linked with them in some type of way -> Sorry, I'm kinda normal about the bond Carol and Hal have, there's many levels of a relationship that these two have -- Including Barry and Hal together. There's a lot of things to talk about these two.)

This first occurs with Carol. As they grew older (Teen years to Adulthood <- Before JL), it gave Hal time of falling for her. Whether it was those long talks out on drives or opening up to each other about the deeper things. Plus, bringing in the things they face together and the collaborations these two agree on or disagree or OVERALL the way they communicate through different forms when it came to both in suit and out of suit. One of my thoughts for my Demiromantic Hal hc. Not only this but they also have a deep connection together later when it comes the Star Sapphire Possessions + Hal being Reborn in Spectre while Carol has presumably moved on. Although it took a bit to figure himself out, he both cares and loves Carol in impossible ways that could be explained. Which leads me to the next case...

(I had to ramble about them... They are like the best friends ever + including Barry and Iris when they come along.)

Sharing to add on for your post... But this is ALSO an idea I've been having for a fic... But I don't have time to write it ALL because I want to make it to many chapters. Be Prepared because I like when you mention HalBarry to me, I get happy because I don't talk about it to people. I also love to hear HalBarry thoughts because I project things that people don't get much like what I'm about to write..

The way Hal feels when it comes to being in love, is partially dumbfounded, it's something that sets him back when he realizes that there's an elephant in the room. One he describes as longing in a way where he didn't know he felt this fast. When in reality it has been years since this friendship. Yes, feelings for one of his best friends. One that he's been friends with since the beginning of the Justice League formation. Which was long... His hair is grey and the smile that was once without wrinkles now forms lines whenever he smiles or laughs.. In his mind, it feels that the feelings that are coming into play feel dangerous. How it makes his palms sweat just being near Barry. How when he isn't being occupied by anything busy, he's thinking about a fond memory with Barry. How Barry makes him smile, the way everything about his friend just makes him giddy like some teenage puppy love. Something he never got to experience but god, when he's with Barry, he feels so young. That even imagining them growing old together is just one step to keeping Hal feeling so young. It's like being awkward when you have no idea where to put your hands. Especially with a friend you've had for many years. A friend who's been there by his side that Hal now begins to think an eye for god knows how many minutes. The friendship teasing between the two and the playful chases that they would take on those evenings when everything just seemed perfect. How standing on that cliff when they were younger, the intimacy of the stare they held. Their deep connection that brings Hal to appreciate every moment he's had with him. How they're practically linked in color. How hope filled the willpower that settled in his personality. That when it came to Barry, it felt like he might have something to lose. Something and someone he's lost before. He knows what it felt to lose Barry. Which one proved his love for Barry to be a lot stronger than what he first thought when it came to the last glimpse of friendship. How that bond turned into a strong form for what Hal should keep fighting for. It was so unexpected. So unexpected to be in love with your best friend.

He is! Now or well Ultra Deluxe Simon/Narrator is more convincingly human, appearance wise and personality. He's adapted and became more human and emotional, more real

Original Narrator is cold/more serious and this translates into him being more robotic personally, following his design to be a Narrator, but as time went on he changes, develops, breaks from this initial design by being more emotional when he talks and injects himself into the story

A small hint to his inhuman-ness is when he says in the serious room ending he struggles with human emotions, and somewhat so when he mentions something along the lines of "your many human ailments" like he doesn't/or can't suffer from them

as for how the two met, I hc that originally Stanley was just a model the Narrator was given to work with by some higher ups (something unknown, or the devs or perhaps the boss is to blame, I haven't really decided) or he simply found Stanley and used him for his game.

At first Stanley is nothing more than a test player, a placeholder for whatever grander plans the Narrator had for his story, but he grew attached to Stanley and recreated him when he went on and made the 2013 TSP demo and then game

I remember back in the Wattpad days when I had just watched Les Mis for the first time. I was so excited about it and I posted a chapter in one of my rant books with just my ramblings and gushing about the show.

I, being young, excited, and still stuck in my Spanish class, spelt all the names wrong. I think I was 13, maybe 14? I don't remember. I do remember spelling most of the names in Les Mis the way I heard them (ex. Jean Valjean sounded like John Von John to me, so I spelt it that way).

I even put a disclaimer that I had never seen Les Mis before and I didn't know french. But an hour after I posted it, someone came along and commented on ever single line, correcting my spelling, telling me what the correct names were, all while being a complete asshole about it.

So anyways, I think about that person from time to time and I wonder if they're doing okay.

giratina had abandoned him, arceus ghosted him, the plates shattered into pieces around him. volo had nothing- was nothing- and as he lay among the ruins of the temple of sinnoh his heart was empty.

what could he do now? by now the child in the survey corps had told their story to the entirety of hisui, and no man nor woman would accept him. volo watched the sun set and willed any sort of emotion to find him.

the stars winked and shined above him mockingly, daring him to dream of godhood again. he did not look up.

volo had no idea how much time had passed when he finally heard something that wasnt his own breathing. it was the clattering of rocks, over by the base of the cave that lead to the rest of hisui. maybe an alpha pokemon was on its way to put him out of his misery.

he was not so lucky.

"volo...?"

fuck. he recognized that voice. it was matli. why was he here? what could he possibly want from volo? was he here to rub salt into the wound, to scream in his face and say how much he deserved to lose?

"volo? are you here?" the smaller man scaled the steps, wheezing as he did so. exercise was not a favorite of his, which made his trek from jubilife village all the more impressive. matli spots volo hidden among the ruins and lets out a sigh of relief.

"oh thank sinnoh, you're alive- i was so worried. shit, i should have brought more bandages, i'm sorry." matli doesnt hesitate as he beelines to volo's side, fussing over his injuries and pulling things out of his satchel. "i brought some potato mochi, some of the rejects beni said we couldnt sell. theyre still tasty, although they don't really look it-"

matli continues chattering mindlessly, and to be completely honest it goes in one ear and out the other. volo is more stunned by the fact that he's here, and helping him, when surely the only reason he knew volo was here was from hearing what volo had done.

"matli."

"-and i'm not entirely sure how mickey got out in the first pla- huh?"

"why are you here?"

matli shrugs. "i told you i was worried."

"you know what i meant."

the other man finally turns his head away, stops touching him. volo continues.

"i'm the reason you're here. i opened the rift, cursed hisui, i lied to you-"

"i know."

tears well in the blond's eyes. "then why are you looking at me like i'm anything more than a monster?"

"you're not a monster. you're a man who made mistakes."

volo scoffs. "'mistakes' is an understatement."

"let me finish, volo."

matli stands. the sun rises behind him, creating a halo effect that blinds volo. he reaches a hand out to the man on the ground.

"you're a man who made mistakes. but your biggest mistake was putting your faith in the wrong god. you should have been worshipping me."
