Koito/reader platonic modern au hcs
(can also be read as romantic if you want :])
Gender neutral reader, Koito's like your best friend here
And this is kind of long. Again
He keeps pulling you out of your comfort zone, whether it's by bringing you to a place you've never been or taking you sightseeing far from home. You always hate him for it at first until you actually start to enjoy the thing he's introducing you to. And by the end he's always so proud of himself for helping you find something new that you like.
One time you went to a clothing store just to buy a new pair of pants or something, meanwhile Koito was off finding outfits for him and yourself. He absolutely insisted to try on the outfits with you and yes you model and take photos in the fitting rooms.
He takes the best selfies and photos like dude its insane. Either he's secretly really good at photography (wouldn't be super surprising) or he just has the best phone camera (also wouldn't be surprising).
His room is always tidy always how the fuck does he do it. And if he sees your room is messy, whether its when he comes over to visit or if he's just being nosy during a video call, he becomes the mom friend and motivates you to tidy up at least a little.
He's sweet in that he invites you out to eat at fancy places but he fucking. He just calls it lunch. Like "oh im gonna go get lunch with them :)". As if he's not shelling out ridiculous sums of money just to eat there.
Dw abt going broke though he'll sponsor you.
Honestly you're a little worried that he'll get his generosity taken advantage of. If you're ever out shopping with him and you refuse to buy something that you want because you've already exceeded your budget, he'll offer to buy it for you and won't ask for anything in return. Something something "your company is a gift enough already".
He likes to invite you over to his house to watch movies or binge shows. He prefers it to the cinemas cause he can't make commentary in public without disturbing people - and he makes so much commentary dude. Sometimes you have to pause what you're watching so he can give his input, and sometimes you end up having a full on discussion about some really trivial aspect of it.
He loves and hates watching cheesy horror films. Love because he finds them so fun to take the piss out of (ignore the fact that he screams at the top of his lungs at jumpscares - not even screams of terror, he makes full-on war cries), and hate because of how dumb the characters can be sometimes.
And when there are two characters who get along really well in the show/ movie, he'll point and go "that's us". Or if the characters are bickering over something trivial he will also say that.
Definitely wears some kind of perfume or cologne. You really can't place your finger on the smell but it is somewhat flowery. When you go back home after spending time at his house you smell like it.
Can and will whoop your ass in smash bros. And he'll do it with the prettiest characters on the roster. And also Ridley because who wouldn't want to be a space dragon for a little while?
You made the mistake of having a sleepover with him and you ended up being part of his 20 step skincare routine (it was actually relaxing, but you're hesitant to admit because you complained about it at first, and Koito would definitely say "I told you so")
It's hard to buy him gifts cause if this man wanted something he'd just buy it. So you write him cards and appreciative messages and he loves it so much. You wouldn't be surprised if his love language is words of affirmation honestly.
If you ever have to call him for company in the middle of the night for whatever reason, he'll be a little cranky. And you'll be worried that you're bothering him but he'll be like "shut up I'm not gonna hang up till I know you're fine"
If youre ever sick he busts the damn door down to make you food and stuff. But he's a little noisy which doesnt help but he's just aggressively supportive so you can't be mad.
Sometimes you and him send each other random screenshots or pictures you have saved that reminded you of each other. He always has the gall to caption each thing he sends with some kind of lighthearted insult or something.
Wine aunt energy, need i say more ?
Absolutely adores internet slang and uses it in verbal conversation, hes so fucking annoying in that he says lol and lmao out loud while he laughs. Like. JUST LAUGH.
Sends you links to youtube videos with timestamps of his favourite moments.
Tends to show up at your house uninvited, he'll just text you that hes otw. But even then the only reason he gives you a text in advance is bcs of the time he came over and you were in the shower. He made a mental note to always give you a heads up because he did not appreciate having to wait outside your front door for however long you took to shower while he frantically spam called your phone which you oh so conveniently didn't bring with you.
He has the cutest mom apron in his kitchen.
He helps you with self care but in the jackass way where if he knows you skipped brushing your teeth, hes gonna bother you until you do it. If you skipped a meal for no good reason hes gonna be on your ass for that too.
He's a little clingy in that if you skip replying to him for just a day without saying why, he's gonna be concerned, so just let him know that youre doing alright.
When he vents to you, it's a whole long winded spiel. Usually he can figure his feelings out by himself but he just needs an ear. And you'll be there listening for so damn long as he rambles and doesnt give you a chance to interject unless you raise your hand or something.
Also his room is so cozy, so so cozy. Complete with a beanbag and soft cushions and his own TV.
Has offered to do your makeup before. And if you dont wear makeup, he will still offer. And if you know how to do makeup then he'll give his advice here and there and ask for you to try your usual look on him.
Whenever he drives he doesnt listen to the gps. He thinks he knows what hes doing and usually he does, but sometimes the gps goes "in 200 meters, turn left" and he'll be like "no i know a shortcut." And then the gps will recalculate the route and the journey will take an extra 15 minutes.

Nono's thoughts on TWST manga #1 in French
Hello everyone!!! I'm pulling out my good ol' Tumblr acc because I will write some long stuff!!
Tomorrow, the first volume of the TWST manga, Episode of Heartslabyul, is releasing in France!
However, I learnt from some friends that it is in fact already available in some libraries, so of COURSE I couldn't wait! And as I already own the American edition, that my sister brought be from her school trip to NYC a few weeks prior the Twst manga announcement in French, I'd like to compare the two editions.
I have to say I am very moved to have in my hands an official piece of Twisted Wonderland content in French. I'm so used to some silly translations between my friends and I that seeing the true stuff... Wow... I'm writing this before actually opening the manga so let's see if I'll want to fight the translators.
I don't speak Japanese at all so I can't compare with the Japanese version, sorry.
This post will of course spoil the whole volume, so don't read it if you don't want any spoilers because I love to go into details!
Tumblr media
For 13 euros, I got the limited edition:tm: of the "Disney Twisted Wonderland ~La Maison Heartslabyul~ 1". We can already see the manga is normal sized compared to the American edition, and let's dive into the Artbook
It's 40 pages of fancy illustration, with, for each Heartslabyul member :
their fullbody dorm render
their ceremony render
their 2nd birthday fullbody
their 1st birthday illustration
their 1st birthday groovy (on a double page)
A very appreciated bonus indeed (I never zoomed on those cards that much)
Now, let's look at the manga before opening it!!!
Tumblr media
As most manga, there's some part of the cover we can remove. Under it, the design is red, with a fancy checkerboard pattern. Behind the 4th cover, there's the illustration of a key.
The bookmark section has some commentaries of the writer and artist of the book, where they're at the end of the book on the American version. The bookmark also has a "start" sign drawn on it, which I think is very cute.
Tumblr media
~ First Chapter and Table of Contents ~
The French version of the manga includes the bonus illustration part in the summary, unlike the US version.
Only the first page with all the housewarden and the title is colored in the FR ver, unlike the US ver which also has colors for the first pages with Crowley talking ominously.
I recall the name of chapters rhyming in the JP version of the game, and while not all the chapter names on the FR manga rhymes, they all sounds very very cool, with some sick alliterations.
No one fucking cares but the US and FR translations don't use the same font lol.
The French version leaves the japanese onomatopoeia and just translates it under it, unlike the US version that directly replaces them with the English equivalent. The work on words placement in the French version is cooler in my opinion. Also the FR version has a translator note to explain what the hell those kendo words are.
Tumblr media
The US version calls Yu's move "a menkaeshimen", while the FR version translates it as "counterattacking a "men" with another "men"", which makes it more clear for the audience, as I'm here for the handsome Disney boys and not the kendo part.
Koito calls Yu "Enma." in the US version while he says "Ah, S... Senpaï..." in the FR version. He stutters more in the FR version.
He also "vouvoies" Yu. "Vous" is a second person pronoun used either for a group of person, or someone you respect, like an adult or something. It's unusual between students in France, but it makes sense for the JP student dynamics I assume?
Dark Mirror is translated as Miroir des Ténèbres (Darkness' Mirror).
After coming out of the gate, Yuken's wonder in the EN version what are those "weird guys in capes", while in the FR version, he wonders who are those "weird guys in ceremony robes". My guy why are you so specific.
Also they call the gates "doors".
Night Raven College is translated as Académie Night Raven (Night Raven Academy) in the dialogue (the logo of the school still features Night Raven College written). NRC would roughly be in France the equivalent of an Highschool, but it doesn't sounds nearly as cool as Académie. I wonder how it'll go when RSA will appears.
the Orientation is called Cérémonie d'Ouverture (Opening Ceremony).
A very little detail, since it's just a different formulation of something that has the same idea, but Kalim says this year already will be full of surprises, HAHAHA YOU HAVE NO IDEAAAS.
We all love "l'unique, le seul, et le futur grand magicien... Grimm le magnifique!" wait a sec-
Grim has been translated into Grimm.
I'M STUNNED THEY ADDED AN M TO THE KITTY UWAAAAA.
Tumblr media
Grim says he can do a lot when he put his "paw" on the dough. Putting our hand on the dough is a common French saying to say we work on something, I think it's very cute we get some puns like that.
Remember that part about "vous" and the 2nd person pronoun ? Well while in the US version, Riddle gets angry at Yu for calling him "kid", here Riddle gets angry because Yu uses "tu" (unformal 2nd person pronoun. one you would normally use on a fellow teen if the fellow teen wasn't on an ego trip).
I don't have enough Disney knowledges to know if the Disney citations are identical to the movie ones.
Grimm the punmaster is back with another paw version of a common saying.
Off with your head is translated as Qu'on lui coupe la tête. The phrase is just as iconic in French as it's in English, so of course they translated it. I would have done the same tbh.
Grammatical moment to mention that Yu says he's now "à Twisted Wonderland". I expected him to say "au Twisted Wonderland", but I don't know much about grammar and it could be a stylistic décision that don't fit my aesthetic.
Tumblr media
Very little detail but Riddle says Yu's enter is ruining "our rules" to Trey and Cater, and not just "the rules", like in the English version. It's an interesting take on his character, I like the dorm spirit.
I just noticed the Dark Mirror rhymes !!! In both EN and FR version.
Housewarden are called Gardien de la maison. It's the literal translation but it sounds sooo bad... Here's some translations I've seen in fanworks : - Prefect / I think that's how Housewardens are called in real life English college anyways? but yeah it ends up being the same as our Yu - Magistrate / pun on magic + you immediately understand it's a high position - "Délégué" (Class Rep) / average word you'd see about a high position student in a real HS.
In the FR version, Yu says to the Ghost Trio that he always wanted to have roommates, where he just says he's happy to meet them as their new roommate in the US ver.
Tumblr media
"Your little "fairytale" will never be real". Ace I love your choice of words but you're such a bastard ♥.
Ace dumb nickname for Deuce is "Douce" (feminine version of sweet/soft). Makes sense.
Great Seven is translated into Sept Majestueux (Majestic Seven). Everything is better when you put some magi-sounding word in stuff! I like this translation.
Queens of Heart -> Reine de Coeur King of Beasts -> Roi des Animaux (King of Animals) Sea Witch -> Sorcière des Mers Sorcerer of the Sands -> Sorcier du Désert King of the Underworld -> Maître des Enfers (Master of Hells) Thorn Fairy -> Fée des Ronces
Magestone -> Pierre magique (Magic Stone). Well, it is what it is. I translated it as Magilithe in the translation of the game I started from my sister for some extra fancy points but I understand they can't just change everything lol. The "pierre" is sometimes substitued with any synonym of it, like Roche (rock) or Caillou (Pebble, by Ace).
Headmage -> Doyen (Dean). It do gives "fancy British school" vibes.
I'm really sorry but Crowley going "you're their guardian so here what they did" sounds so silly bc it kinda makes it sounds like Riddle is the legal guardian of his dormmates... Daddy Riddle...
Tumblr media
I don't have much to say about the final chapter, so I'll conclude with how happy I am to have this manga! Trying to get the manga as early as possible and checking every difference in translations reminds me of my Yo-kai Watch era.
In one of the final pages of the FR version, there's a little preview of the next volume. No dates are announced for it sadly, but I'll wait patiently.
I emptied my bedroom to repaint my walls so I had to empty all my bookshelves. Now, only true quality writing is available in my room.
Riddle and Deuce are tied-in for the place of my fav Twst character, and Ace is the happy 3rd guy of my podium, so this is an amazing day for me.
Thank you so much if you read up to there!!

really the only time i like ogata is when hes interacting with usami because the way they bounce off each other is insanely funny. obviously theres this scene which i think is one of the best usami moments in the series in showcasing the kind of guy he is
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but its also great because like. why are you asking usami of all people. this implies ogata has some level of respect for usamis opinion even if just for the sake of easing his conscience which is more than almost anyone else has shown. usami is not a sniper and even if theyre in the same battalion or whatever there is no reason for them to be hanging out here. i love the idea that theyre buddies because it does ultimately kind of make sense... usami gave ogata information that allowed him to see through tsurumis plans & isn't outwardly hostile towards ogata (until much later of course) which makes him a decent comrade in ogatas eyes, and ogata is one of the few people close to tsurumi (and thus usami) that definitively does not want to fuck him which makes him non-threatening to usami, plus usami finds his life funny to watch unfold, so in that way he's a great person to have around. plus they both have the whole "no guilt no shame no empathy" thing going for them even if ogata's is arguably feigned. neither of them really respect or like each other but it's better than hanging out with tanigaki (too serious and in his own head) or tsukishima (too stoic and boring, not to mention usami's only immediate threat) or god forbid KOITO (koito). i think they used to get into knife fights in barracks for no real reason except for having fun

i recently reread golden kamuy and like honestly, what a solid and engaging series. like start to finish i don’t think it ever falls off or gets boring. there were some moments when i was reading it while it was publishing that were very ??? to me and pissed me off but like on reread it’s like that was fine. by the end of my reread i was happy for asirpa but so sad that i can’t experience it for the first time ever again. the last time i read it was literally like when the last chapter came out and i was initially gonna wait until the final volume came out but i really felt like i wanted to now. i read the scans anyway even though i own half the volumes i just can’t stand the official translation it’s sooo not funny in comparison. the issue is the volumes have a bunch of changes so now i gotta go back and read those
i remember when it was at the final two arcs i was mostly just waiting to see what ogata was gonna do bc i legit just hated koito and tsukishima so much and tsurumi was kinda losing his touch for me but like i actually think i don’t hate koito as much as before. like his conclusion was sorta ass given historical context but he was a decent character for most of it. the second to last scene where he calls out tsurumi was one of those ??? moments at first but now i love it (mostly for tsurumi being creepy). still kinda hate tsukishima but i do also think most of my hatred was bc of annoying shippers and ppl who overanalyze him considering he’s just so boring and his conclusion was the worst, felt so rushed. at least ogata girlies made more sense bc nobody knew what his problem was. anyway my flame for that has mostly burnt out. i still wish he died and ushiyama lived but i didn’t hate his death. and i also wanted toni anji to live he was the chillest convict such a cool dude like actually my fav supporting character
anyway tsurumi might have replaced ogata as my fav villain like he was actually so fucking scary and sad but mostly scary during the battle arc HE WAS LITERALLY GOING FERAL. the way he hates wilk and asirpa by extension so much is like frightening.
ogatas conclusion still slaps but it is kinda funny to think about he was having this delusional conversation with himself while the main trio just kinda watched and were like “ok moving on”. literally see my last post. and initially i thought sugimoto should die but i’m glad he didn’t i would’ve been really sad if he did
such a good and bittersweet ending just how i like it

1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 20
1: I could be here all day, but to narrow it down to just one.... The dog. The myth. The Legend. THE WISHBONE.
2: Yuu Koito x Touko Nanami in Bloom Into You. I love these two with all my heart.
3: Well... I never watched The Mandalorian (and don't really plan to, for various reasons) but I'm sick of seeing Grogu/Baby Yoda everywhere. And speaking of Star Wars... Kylo fucking Ren. I've even seen people who dislike the Sequel Trilogy praise the character, but I'm sorry, he just fucking sucks. I'm pretty sure all the praise is because of Adam Driver's performance, and I can see it and feel so bad for the dude because he gave it his all, but they did him (and everyone else in those godawful movies) so, so dirty with those godawful scripts.
5: Hmm... I guess Touko Nanami. I haven't been through a major trauma like she has, but I too have severe issues with depression and self-loathing, and don't understand why anyone would like me. I just hope my story and self-esteem improves like it did for her.
6: Hmmmm! Lessee... there are several that remind me of one person I know. Twilight Sparkle, Daria Morgendorffer, Frankie Foster, Dib and Gaz Membrane... there's probably more I'm forgetting, but there's one person they remind me of. ;)
7: Hmm... Yuri Tamura from WataMote. We're quite similar and I'd love to just chill with her and watch movies with her, even those dark arty movies she seems to like ("BUFFALO 66!").
10: Limestone Pie from MLP? One of my favorite ponies, but I'm quite a lazy bastard, so we'd probably end up hating each other :'D
12: I'm not sure if "supposed to hate" is the right word since we were definitely intended to at least sympathize with her, but I've seen some fans hate on her (those people are wrong), so... Nanami Kiryuu from Revolutionary Girl Utena. My first impression of her was "Wow I don't like this bitch", and she can indeed be pretty horrible, but I quickly came to love her because she's such a hilarious bitch who fails harder than Tomoko Kuroki. And given a lot of what happens later in the show, yeah I also sympathize with her a lot.
20: Hmmm... one is definitely Batman. It's weird, I didn't read the comics or watch the movies (I DO vaguely remember catching part of Batman & Robin when my parents rented it, and I also remember it being this dark and serious film lmao), and didn't watch THAT much of The Animated Series, but Batman was the only superhero I really had a ton of action figures of. And years later, still my favorite superhero.

I could definitely see momoe being intersex! It definitely happens to where ppl dont even know about it or realize it! I like this headcanon for her, a little light in the darkness. ☺️
My thoughts on the show though...oh man. They are very negative so I'm sorry. 😫 You don't have to read it all if you don't want to. Warnings ahead for mentions of child abuse and suicide:
In a nutshell it's some kind of preachy anti-suicide propaganda piece, and it goes about its message in such a weirdly perverse and victim-blamey way. It's also sexually charged in a rly low-key way where it's romanticizing the way these children are crushing on and/or being abused by adult men. Ah I can't articulate it properly but it comes off as so sinister in its intention and it's easy to miss, *especially* for the target audience of, well, 14-year-old girls.
The end was so nonsensical that I can barely even remember what happened, but by that time I was already so upset about Frill and realizing what the show's message truly was that I don't think I was even registering what little plot that show had to give.
Also, as a trans boy myself, I have mixed feelings about Kaoru, but I don't think I'll ever watch the show a second time to let those thoughts fully form.
i just finished the last episode (without the extras) and im gonna be real with u i didn't understand it at all 💀
i see your point and i agree, especially with the last wonder egg & the whole thing with ai's/koito's teacher. i got the ick really quickly but the 1st real nail was the fact that he painted an "adult" version of ai and called it beautiful/gorgeous etc (and said she'd look like her mother, WITH WHOM HE IS IN A RELATIONSHIP......) and i thought it would be addressed later on, but they just. dropped that and then made it worse by saying that in a parallel universe she confessed to him and that he was her first love. without it being weird somehow idk. not to mention how breezily they hypothetized that he could've abused koito hello..... however ill give them the benefit of the doubt for that since it was a discussion between 4 teen girls and one of them did step up. even tho she just stepped up to defend her uncle. oh well.
i think i see their point in the way that teenagers sometimes get attached to their teachers, but it's the teachers' responsibility to draw a FIRM boundary and that guy clearly didn't with neither ai nor koito. im also quite unsatisfied about how his relationship with koito remained vague till the end of the main show (can't say abt the extras)
overall i still enjoyed watching it and got attached to the girls, but it really went sideways with the episodes 10-12. not really sure how i feel about the frill situation which frustrates me to NO END bc i literally started watching it for her </3 anyway
kaoru is... an extremely unimportant character, barely one episode etc and his trauma (and the trauma of all the wonder eggs tbh) was basically overlooked, which is also why im desperately clinging to the queer momoe hc. also disappointed bc he really deserved. so much more.
ANYWAY i was 0% ready for the last 3 episodes, and idk if ill watch the extras bc that was really weird and rushed. i feel like they should've explored some stuff way more, specifically around frill and how she's linked to what's happening. plus her motives etc, bc at the end of the day it's up to interpretation but like so vague i can't even really think of smth that would fully make sense
so, yea. imo amazing start but some very important things were left out (which sucks bc as u said the target audience is teenagers) and glazed over when it could've been an opportunity to point out how fucking WEIRD and dangerous some teachers are and the end was kinda fucked.
in conclusion. hoshiai no sora is better

OTPs of 2021
While it feels like yesterday when I posted my Favourite Couples of 2020 list (three months too late), it is once again that time of the year to compile a new one.
(this list isn't in any particular order by the way)
Raeda || Raine Whispers and Eda Clawthorne (The Owl House)
Tumblr media
*plays eda's requiem on a loop for hours*
No, I'm not joking, I genuinely play this soundtrack so often, and you can find me humming it under my breath at least once a day.
There is something so heartbreakingly beautiful about them, how they drift apart and still find their way back to each other, years later.
Also, a sapphic relationship between two older characters where one of them is non-binary? What a win for representation in kid's animations. I'm so glad there are kids growing up watching this.
Owl House, you've done it again.
Lumity || Luz Noceda and Amity Blight (The Owl House)
Tumblr media
Okay, I'm technically cheating with this one because they were on this last year and I already have another ship for this show but I don't care.
I love them.
They got even more adorable this year which I didn't think was possible.
The cheek kiss? The tunnel of love? The confession?
Another year goes by and here I am, still a Lumity stan.
Wangxian || Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji (The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation)
Tumblr media
This, is the ideal ship dynamic.
It has everything: the enemies to tumultous allies to I absolutely adore you but I am apparently not good at expressing emotions in a conventional manner so everyone thinks I hate you (lan wangji) or You're the best thing in my life right now and I think you're the most beautiful person out there, also do you want to raise my beloved son/radish with me in a small cottage in the countryside? no homo though (wei wuxian) to those thirteen years that make me want to curl into a foetal position and sob but we're just going to ignore that for now to you're the only one who will always know me best to pining^100 and aware (lan wangji) or pining^100 and oblivious (wei wuxian).
Don't worry, they figure it out... eventually.
In all honesty, it is perhaps, the best love story I have read. The sheer artistry with which their story has been built is amazing.
Just please, go and read the book/watch the donghua/read the manhua/watch the c-drama.
Look at all the options!
Kyoru || Sohma Kyo and Honda Tohru (Fruits Basket)
Tumblr media
To absolutely no one's surprise, I ship them.
I watched Fruits Basket recently and oh my god, it's so fucking good, and Kyoru's dynamic is just so wonderful? It makes me so happy?
To see two people overcome the struggles thrown their way, to believe in the other so fully, and just to derive so much happiness from being near each other?
I adore them.
Malori Crowlett and Queen Velverosa (Mage and Demon Queen)
Tumblr media
Okay, this one is a little different from the others because it's actually a manhua on Webtoon called Mage and Demon Queen.
And it is honestly one of the best things I've ever read.
I'm going to be honest, yuri is probably the hardest genre to find good stories in, simply because it isn't as popular as mlm or m/f (but i can gradually see the greater flow of good sapphic content and it makes me so happy).
And a story with a main wlw relationship that is so forward without it overtaking the base plot? I'd never found one before this, and I am very greatful for it.
(you seriously underestimate how much i love banter and innuendo, and 'mage and demon queen' does not disappoint on their aspect.)
To give you the last bit of incentive to pick up this amazing manhua if you haven't already, here's the summary:
Adventurers seek to take the demon queen’s head, but a love-struck young female mage wishes to take her hand. Join us won’t you, for this bawdy tale of love and persistence set inside a real-life RPG.
Why wouldn't you be interested?
Koito Yuu and Nanami Touko (Bloom Into You)
Tumblr media
(Okay, so I binged this one because I had to suddenly get my wisdom teeth surgically removed. Which meant I was basically ordered to take it easy for a day or two and just eat icecream. It was a good time.)
I think this was the first show that I watched that was literally just about the main wlw relationship. The entire plot revolved around the two of them and what they meant to each other and it was just so beautifully done.
It had multiple sapphic relationships, an aroace character, a main relationship where two girls showed their affection to one another in a way that I had never really seen before. I never knew how much I needed this because I saw so much of myself in all of these characters.
(Every time I see a gif of them being this adorable couple I have to take a moment to squeal and then another to go: god I wish that were me.)
Renga || Kyan Reki and Hagasewa Langa (Sk8 the Infinity)
Tumblr media
*pulls their cheeks* adorable.
Bright sunshine boy and his lovestruck ice boyfriend. What more do you want?
Oh, an incredibly nuanced dynamic about grief and self-worth, overcoming your fears and finally realising that the true joy is in each other's company?
Also, the english dub is so good, god bless.
Nothing will ever be funnier than 'Reki, my love... For skateboarding'.
The VAs sure knew what they were doing.
Matchablossom || Cherry Blossom and Joe (Sk8 the Infinity)
Tumblr media
I once again break the one ship per show rule because what was I supposed to do? Not include them?
They're dynamic is so good, from their banter, to their shared history and eventual mending relation.
Also, once again, the english dub has blessed us becuase they went from bickering, married old couple (sub) to 'we used to date once but i'm not really over him' (dub).
Harlivy || Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy (Harley Quinn)
Tumblr media
Harlivy are quite literally, partners in crime. (i'm sorry, i'll show myself out now)
Morally grey sapphic characters? Who love each other unconditionally and would do absolutely anything for the other? I adore them.
(ngl, the whole show has a very crack-ish air to it, which is very intended and it just works flawlessly for the dynamic between these two.)
Bakudeku || Midoriya Izuku and Bakugou Katsuki (My Hero Academia)
Tumblr media
You will genuinely not believe how much I've talked about these two all year. I literally use their dynamic as a blueprint for literary analysis and comparison. I cannot possibly get any more invested.
I know I said this list isn't ordered, (and it isn't) but if I had to choose a favourite ship for the year, it would easily be the two of them. (not even surprised at this point)
Past experience has shown the childhood friends to enemies to lovers dynamic that just gets me hook, line and sinker.
I can't even begin about how I feel about their dynamic without getting into a two hour long tangent but one thing I will say is this: I love how their relationship has progressed over the course of the story and I cannot wait to see how it will develop.

my thoughts on episode 11 of wonder egg priority
Tumblr media
tw// neglect, possible abuse, murder, human experimentation
holy SHIT is there a lot to unpack.
first of all, everyone except ai and neiru have now experienced the truth of what happens when you complete the total amount of people to save. at the end of episode ten we saw momoe’s breakdown and panic’s death and at the beginning today’s episode we saw rika find out and mannen’s death. (i previously wrote that neiru and pinky had experienced it but after someone kindly let me know after a rewatch that it was in fact momoe, not neiru. sorry for the error)
however, ai is now the only one who knows about frill and what happened to her. speaking of, there are a RIDICULOUS amount of parallels between the two. i’ll be reblogging some posts that explain it a lot better than i ever could right after i post this.
what i really want to focus on is frill. despite her fairly questionable and downright evil actions, i can’t help but feel a shred of pity for her.
born out of quite literal boredom and under strict surveillance, she was almost destined to be unloved. she was not made to be a human, but simply something for acca and ura acca to love. in the way you might buy a doll for a small child. their mistake was adding such severe jealousy and stubbornness to something they had created to be perfection.
stuck at the age of 14 permanently, it’s no surprise her mental state was damaged. imagine the jealousy, the intense emotions, everything you go through at that age.
she is at least somewhat aware that she is artificial intelligence considering how open those who are around her seem to be about it. however, she does not seem to be keen on accepting it or believing it. after all, she is not programmed to. she is programmed to sense things in the way a human would. and that opens a whole world of other doors about how anyone could be an ai and not know it but i doubt wonder egg priority would get that meta this close to the end.
time to tie up all these loose ends. around midway through the episode we are introduced to a love interest (who i have forgotten the name of, apologies) who causes a split in acca and ura acca’s relationship (marriage), and she soon becomes pregnant with a child. a human child.
frill was programmed to be able to understand her parents in the way a daughter would. she begins to taunt ura acca about his husband cheating on him with the woman he loves and once she finally finds out that the baby is a girl, she decides to kill the mother.
the motivation behind frill’s mental deterioration is slowly becoming clearer and clearer. i strongly suspect that she felt she was being replaced with a human child and realised the inherent inferiority she was going to have once the child was born, and became overcome with jealousy. not only would she now have to take on the role to be a big sister (which she was not programmed to accept or do. she was programmed to be stubborn and jealous in the way a 14 year old girl would be) but she would lose the ability she had to be perceived as a human daughter by the parents who raised her.
imagine being created for the sole purpose of being the perfect daughter for somebody to love, and then being replaced. i am by no means excusing murder, but it’s hard not to see her motivation.
as punishment and as relief of acca’s grief, frill was then locked away with nothing but her ai machinery for anywhere between 12 and 15 years*.
enter himari, the child that survived despite frill’s attempt at murder of both mother and child. she is described as having “saved” ura acca and acca from their state after the mother’s murder and the abandonment of their artificial daughter. when we see her able to talk, she is shown asking ura acca to marry her once she is older to make up for the pain of the loss of her mother. she is stated as being in junior high at the time (*my timespan reasoning for the time frill was locked away). while this scene made me greatly uncomfortable, it might be to show frill’s impact and influence on himari. if they had come into contact, frill would arguably do anything in her power to gain back control of her parents.
perhaps himari asked this purposefully to anger frill, which is supported further by the fact himari was found dead (cause of death suicide) the night later.
suicide. what’s the entire theme OF the eggs? i don’t know about you but i can hear lightbulbs beginning to flicker.
ura acca and acca began research into girls suicides at that age, and found a steady surge around the same time as himari’s death.
acca and ura acca are trying to bring back himari, possibly their wife, and maybe, maybe just maybe frill as well. i think that is the real purpose of the wonder egg project.
we also finally have our answer as to why girls and boys suicides are different with wonder eggs! acca and ura acca are indeed sexists, just not about suicide.
i’ll let you do the rest of the theorising.
now for the loose ends that i don’t think can be tied up.
why are hyphen and dot named after punctuation? is their goal to bring frill back to life?
what was neiru’s family’s involvement in the wonder eggs? in fact, where is neiru?
is frill alive or dead? is there even a way to distinguish with someone in her state?
what happened to acca and ura acca to make them.. well, to make them like that? last i checked, turning into mannequins isn’t a symptom of grief. are they even alive?
MOMOE. WHERE THE FUCK IS MOMOE. GIVE ME MOMOE OR GIVE ME DEATH.
there are a shit ton of new, unspecified entities we’re learning about. what actually are hyphen and dot? are they AIs like frill? perhaps not fully formed? and thanatos and eros?
where do the girls go once they’ve been freed? is “freed” even the right term?
what did mr sawaki say to ai about koito? why did koito die? is mr sawaki going to have a bigger role than a consistently fucking annoying red herring after all?
rika’s father? why have that as a big factor in an episode conflict if it’s never going to be addressed again?
the sketchy lesbian representation compared to the consistent positive trans ftm and gay representation? why have the only canonically wlw character be a product of a harmful stereotype after treating everything else so respectfully?
and most importantly, how the FUCK is this going to get cleared up in one episode?
i don’t even think that’s possible. if it is, i’m really disappointed. after consistent excellent pacing, writing, storytelling, and everything else, cramming everything into the last couple of episodes is just cheap and annoying. if i wanted to drone on for an entire series before an explosion of poor plot points for shock factor, i’d just go watch the second season of the promised neverland (/hj).
the only somewhat reasonable explanation would be a second season, but it is a terrible media decision and i can’t imagine much, if any, good coming from it.
in conclusion, what the fuck. how the hell is this going to salvage itself in one episode?
also i wrote this entire thing while on my sleep meds. if there’s logical, grammatical, spelling or just general errors i apologise and i’ll fix them when i’m not half conscious.

Genre Straightjackets: A Bloom Into You Review
(Spoilers ahoy) I finished the Bloom Into You manga last night, a yuri-tale by Nio Nakatani that began in 2015. Its core conceit is that of a girl, Yuu Koito, who finds herself incapable of experiencing love the way her peers seem to, much to her confused chagrin. She finds a supposed equal in this lack in her try-hard perfectionist senpai Touko Nanami, but that equality is dashed as Touko falls for Yuu precisely because of her closed heart; in Yuu’s apathy Touko finds a pliant vessel for her own desires and needs that she never knew she wanted. Yuu tries to make it work and story ensues.
A lot of romance manga/anime can bore me as the core dynamic of the main duo is very mundane; there are *external* forces that create drama, keep them separated, etc, but their actual dynamic is cookie-cutter - they love each other! When will they realize it!? Bloom Into You really did a good job in its opening arcs of of setting up something different. Touko finding Yuu attractive because she can project her own anxieties on to her without complaint or need to factor in Yuu’s own relationship wants, a dynamic she is drawn to as she spends so much time being outwardly perfect she needs an outlet for her more selfish sides? Yuu constantly permitting her escalating intimacy out of awe for Touko’s outward success and charisma, pity for her weaknesses revealed in their alone moments, and own desire to effort-hack her way into experiencing love? This conflict is entirely internal, psycho-sexual dynamics premised on differing relationship needs as opposed to communication errors. In real life romantic dynamics are almost never equanimous, but romance manga have a tendency to place the differences entirely in the surface personalities (genki girl vs shy bookworm, etc), not in the actual needs of the pair, but Bloom Into You doesn’t appear to make that choice.
And even if briefly, it goes there on the sexual part of pyscho-sexual; you get hot make-out scenes in school sheds that aren’t just releases of sexual tension as Yuu is constantly negotiating what she is actually getting out the experience, experimenting between letting Touko sate herself on her body vs actually playing with the power she is learning to hold, while Touko is dancing between escalating her demands and not pushing too far someone who does not, in fact, love her back. The art really sells it too - nothing exceptional but it there is a lot of intentional polish here:
Tumblr media
Touko’s (left) knowing smile and controlling hand vs Yuu’s uncertain-but-accepting passivity in this volume-1 shot, and it grows from there. Also Yuu is cute as fuck, those tiny twintails! Good shit Nakatani! I know what kink is and I am pretty sure you do as well, Yuu is out here growing into topping from the bottom as a subby ace and I am here for it.
Except alas Bloom Into You is not here for it. When I first read it my partner commented about how when she watched the first episode of the anime adaption her circle was all excited to have some asexual representation in anime, and even a chapter into the manga all the signs were there for that hope to be disappointed. Asexuality is not a thing in Japanese discourse (note: does not mean that Japanese ace people don’t exist), and the conventions of the yuri genre are way too strict. Narratives need arcs, and arcs need resolution, so of *course* Yuu is going to grow into actually loving Touko, and all that passivity will bloom into normal relationship dynamics. It has to, so we have an ending, and that ending can involve the mutual affection payoff - and pretty-good sex scene - the audience needs. Bloom into You was published in Dengeki Daioh, one of the big shōnen magazines in Japan, which tells you everything you need to know about how it will end. This isn’t My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, and it never could have been due to the market forces creating it. Which means that the interesting dynamics on Yuu’s end fade away over time to be replaced by Happy Ending.
Meanwhile, Touko’s perfectionist drive turns out to stem from a Tragic Past™ involving her dead sister who she idolizes and is trying to emulate, and her arc ensues from there. Remember Kare Kano? Oh you have taste, so of course you do? Thats good, remember how Best Girl Yukino has this entire conflict about how she is driven to be a perfectionist due to an addiction to praise and its been warping her behavior and relationships and the entire first episode of the anime is just this deep dive into her brain and the toll this is taking:
Tumblr media
Oh hey, is that the same exact conflict Touko has? Oh funny, what a coincidence! So what is Yukino’s tragic backstory reason for putting on the perfectionist mask?
Nothing. She has a happy home, goals, the works. She just is an attention addict, its her personality. And to be honest in real life this is *way* more common. People have personalities and desires that are influenced by their circumstances but exist outside of them, and life is a constant journey of fulfilling, managing, or challenging them. In Kare Kano Yukino as a character gets that reality deeply explored, no dead sibling required. I am not out here to say that having tragic backstories is bad, or even that Touko is bad, she is not. However, by *externalizing* her character flaws to an outside cause, once that cause is *resolved* by narrative those traits more-or-less vanish, making A: her character more shallow, and B: her dynamic with Yuu more contingent, and ultimately more cookie-cutter.
I guess I am just out here looking for more interesting relationships, and Bloom Into You teased me with that potential but ultimately snatched it away. It was still good, if you like the yuri genre and the art appeals to you I definitely recommend it, and it has way more maturity than some its peers. Just not enough to break free from the straightjacket of its own genre conventions.

Just finished the latest episode of wonder egg priority,, and I have no idea how to express how I feel! But let’s try anyways. (This is just my thoughts! I’m still very much processing this but I’m just gonna be going through what we were told in episode 11).
‼️SPOILER WARNING FOR EPISODE 11 OF WONDER EGG PRIORITY‼️
So,,, we all agree that Ura-Acca is in love with Acca right? (Maybe? Brothers but I think they would’ve told us this by now). Like seriously, those two were not fighting for Azusa. It was more that Azusa and Ura-Acca were fighting for Acca
Also who. the. fuck. Creates a teenager just for FUN??? Of course Frill is fucked up, she was a literal experiment and they reacted in the worst way possible when she killed Azusa. That being said, what she did was wrong however considering that she is a piece of technology and they have no idea what’s going on in her head, I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner. Ultimately, I don’t think Frill is the complete villain of this story because we still don’t have a very clear picture
ALSO WHERE THE F U C K ARE THE ‘FREED’ GIRLS GOING?? Why isn’t Momoe with Haruka and Rika with Chiemi 😰? You’d think that the Momoe would have told the other wonder egg users about what happened. I’m honestly very scared for what’s going to happen next.
What do the screens at the very end mean? I talked this over with some people and it’s worrying for Rika and Momoe. The screens seem to reflect suicidal girls that Frill can target. And since she isn’t in her box,,, is she out and harming people? Why isn’t she there? Why didn’t Ura-Acca and Acca just try to find out why she did these things? (Not to excuse it just so THEY CAN STOP IT). Did she run away? I honestly have no clue what’s going on and it’s s c a r y.
Next episode is called “An unvanquished warrior” does this mean Ai? W h a t the hell is going on honestly
This is why we don’t create ai teenagers with emotions and basically full human capabilities!!! Like what were they expecting? They created a child out of curiosity????
I JUST NEED TO KNOW WHY KOITO DIED. AND IF MR SAWAKI IS A P€D0! LIKE PLS I JUST WANNA KNOW 😩
Well that’s all for now, if I have more I’ll come back and reboot it with more commentary (not that anyone cares tho)

Top 5 chapters/parts/moments of GK that surprised you. I'm not talking 'oh gave me a wee little startle' kind of shit, I mean the best 'wtf am I reading wtf is happening' moments
5. the whole of henmi honestly... i think he's the first genuine taste and the face of what this manga actually is. the first hint was nihei but it was easy to consider him an outrageous joke. i started off with watching the anime to be sure, but when this moment happened
Tumblr media
i gasped irl i was like... huh... is this allowed? how did they get away with this? how was he allowed to write that? how were they allowed to air it on tv? as i was laughing my ass off. god i love henmi so fucking much it's unreal
4. this moment, again in the anime
Tumblr media
the exact moment i fell in love with tsurumi which sent me into a spiral of insanity. like i liked him since his introduction but before that he was just some guy, the villain, quirky and extra and eccentric and likeable but nothing special really, but this moment specifically was a jaw drop for me. like he's talked to edogai-kun for what, 5 minutes? he didn't know anything about him. and yet it was enough to figure out exactly what kind of person he is, what kind of struggles he has, and what's the best strategy to manipulate his way into his heart. it happened in a heartbeat and he was right on the money, of course. it's more subtle than outright WTF but it did have a deep emotional impact on me lol. something similar happened when i was reading the koito kidnapping arc, when he appeared being like I Will Save Your Son i was like do not fucking tell me that he orchestrated this whole thing... this is fucking demonic omg. pure serotonin
3. this page
Tumblr media
i liked usami since he was introduced because he was funny and a tsurumi simp but when this page happened my jaw fucking dropped lol. this creature is fucking rabid. not that i didn't expect him to kill his bestie but i def wasn't expecting him to do it like THAT, by brute force in seething rage with his veins popping and his pupils dilated... genuinely one of the best moments in the manga
2.
Tumblr media
no words. first this chapter dropped in kr and with it, my jaw, my wig, etc then it dropped in jpn then it en and all 3 times i was just :o this can't be happening. like i just kept going back to those 2 pages for 3 weeks i shit you not and i was like. no. this can't be. this can't be. this is... no this can't be. what the fuck... what the fuck man what the fuck. absolutely brain chemistry altering moments
1.
Tumblr media
the most WTF gk moment for me personally. i legit had to put my phone down for a full 5 minutes after seeing this cover. i don't even mean this positively btw i just felt genuinely shocked and was like how the FUCK was this allowed... how did it go in print? i'm losing my mind? the whole detective arc was a genuine shock to me, in a neither negative nor positive way it was just pure o_o it also got me desensitized to anything tbh like if this happened sure anything else can happen go noda

top 5 gk characters
5.5. sugimoto - i know this is “cheating,” but he and asirpa together were what drew me to the series to begin with. he’s a solid dude who loves animals and children, and he’s soooo painfully earnest at all times. there’s also something to be said of a someone who’s essentially anti-war yet insists on solving all of their problems with the most extreme violence you’ve ever seen (good for him.)
5. asirpa - she's just a super likable kid? asirpa is responsible for like 90% of the info dumping in golden kamuy, which was a huge part of the manga’s appeal for me early on. same thing with her facial expressions. i also think she’s written with a sense of gravitas that most child characters (and especially teenage girls) just don’t have. she genuinely feels like she’s going to grow up to be an important person. and her dynamic with sugimoto is >>>>
4. koito - koito's character arc is satisfying in the same way that it's satisfying to find out something you thought was gold plated is actually gold all the way through. he's introduced as a vapid, pretty boy, rich kid bully who's coasting off of his father's legacy. he doesn't really take his responsibilities seriously outside of his ability to please tsurumi at first, but reveals himself to have much more moral grit than is initially apparent. he's a lot like asirpa in that his character's all about deciding what kind of leader he wants to be. his time in karafuto mirrors asirpa's in that he's meeting this big, diverse group of people he'll eventually have to deal with in a leadership capacity.
the subsequent scene where koito pulls rank on tsukishima is one of the most moving scenes in the entire manga for me. i don't mean that romantically, because i'm not very ship-happy in general, but what it really reminds me of the "no chance, and no choice" scene from asoiaf: he's found himself in this situation where somebody needs to step up and do the right thing, but nobody is stepping up to do the right thing, so okay it has to be him. koito proves himself to be a much better person than anyone else he's working with when he does. i think that goodness is really, really difficult to write in an impactful and dynamic way and noda just nailed it there.
his characterization has kind of petered out since then, but i find the whole sentiment of protecting tsurumi's men from tsurumi really moving, as well. i hope he manages to follow through on that somehow.
3. usami - first of all his character design is mesmerizing. second of all, i think he has the most objective perspective of any character. this page bothered me for a long time because i felt that manipulative, chess master tsurumi should be in usami's place, overlooking his soldiers. but now i think it indicates that usami sees both tsurumi and ogata for exactly who they are--he holds no illusions about what sort of person tsurumi is (literally the chernobyl elephant's foot if the elephant's foot were a guy in the japanese military), and he doesn't agonize over his own nature the way ogata does. he knows what's what and usually says as much. maybe he's comparable to king lear's fool? is that pretentious?? third of all, he jerked off on panel. what the fuck.
2. ogata - he’s SUCH a maniac. all of his cat idiosyncrasies are spot-on. he has a one-sided sibling rivalry with everyone he’s ever met. “why am i unloved?!” he asks himself while popping caps in people left and right (especially the ones who are nice to him) and being generally unpleasant. the thing that people who want ogata to GeT a ReDeMpTiOn ArC or whatever don't understand is the whole appeal of his character is in that he’s terrible person who has no interest in self-improvement, and that he’s excruciatingly easy to identify with in spite of that fact. he's aware that he’s a sicko and agonizes over it. i think that everybody on earth has at some point wondered why they are the way they are, and why they're not somebody better, wealthier, more loved, “chosen.” ogata keeps trying and failing to connect how fucked up he is to his ugly childhood (there’s very little more heartbreaking than the knowledge that your own parents don’t love you), or to prove that other people are Secretly Just Like Him. somehow, he’s both the funniest and saddest character in the whole manga. i hope he never achieves inner peace. i hope he dies wondering how it all went wrong.
1. tsurumi - i’m biased towards villains to begin with because they force everyone else to make more interesting decision, and emotionally manipulative, fascistic patriarchs in particular are my bread and butter. tsurumi is a really great take on that--he’s just so competent. it’s fun to watch him work people over, and i love that his whole war machine is powered by queerbaiting teens and 20-somethings (and occasionally hard drugs.) he ain’t even cute anymore! he’s so deeply dishonest that i still can’t work out what his end goal is, if there even is one. part of me thinks he’s just an addict (i’d be cool with that.) i was surprised that noda didn’t cite either cape fear or night of the hunter as influences on tsurumi, because he feels so much like a sinister robert mitchum character. he has the same slimy, sophisticated creature-ness to him. i hope that he gets eaten by a bear, as his superior officers surely intended him to when they sent him up north. i hope he watches everything he worked slip through his fingers as he does.

Hey Clyde, did you check out Wonder Egg Priority at all? The first ep is super promising, but the series as a whole is one of those real fascinating disasters from a story and a production standpoint that might be up your alley as a thing to pick apart haha.
I’d warn that it’s also reeeeal offensive and this generally gets worse as it goes though.
Hi, Phoenix! How are you and Cube doing?
Okay, I hadn't watched Wonder Egg Priority when I received your ask this morning. Now I have. In a fit of intense curiosity I settled down for a rare binge session and tore through all twelve episodes + OVA in a single sitting. It is now nearly 3:00am as I write this because I, oh so clearly, make fantastic life choices.
A question for you: what did I just watch?
The rest is going under a read more partly for spoilers, but more-so because WEP—and the summary I'm about to give, because I feel like I need to try and explain this to tumblr's faceless void for my own, dwindling sanity—comes with about every trigger warning under the sun. Seriously, if you are triggered by anything that we might think of as a "standard" trigger (meaning, not unique to you and your own experiences), best to proceed with caution.
Right! What the ever loving fuck happened in this show? Well, let's work through this chronologically. Two genius, frat boy brothers (I get their names mixed up so I'm not even gonna bother) are locked in their apartment and closely monitored because of Super Secret Science Research. Even though, I think, they're the ones who created this company. Not important! What is important is that they're bored enough to create an AI for funsies, thinking of her as their daughter and letting her name herself Frill. Frill is the perfect, cutesy, also genius child who has a habit of popping her lips — which the camera focuses on in an incredibly creepy fashion. One day Brother #1 (the hot one) falls in love with a random woman we know nothing about and Frill gets jealous.
"Jealous in a general sense?" you ask, thinking this show is in any way normal. "Like, just of her Dad giving attention to someone else?"
"No," I respond, patting your hand. "Jealous because she's in love with him." Which, beyond the subject matter itself, comes completely out of nowhere. Frill has a line about what you'd do if some woman stole your husband away. I, fool that I was, briefly considered that these two guys were lovers, not brothers. Oh no. They're brothers. Frill just considers Dad #1 to be her "husband."
So, in true evil AI fashion, she murders the wife, leaving only her newly born child behind. Who is a daughter.
Uh oh.
Dad #1 locks Frill in a coffin-esque hole in the basement and goes on with his life. Things are great! Until years later when the daughter reveals that she has fallen in love with her uncle (Dad #2 to Frill). She knows (somehow??) that both her dad and her uncle loved her mom, so if the loser uncle will just wait a few years he can marry her instead! He brushes her off, but the next day she’s found dead of an apparent suicide.
Realizing that this was somehow Frill’s doing, he marches down to the basement and confronts the murderous child they’ve had locked up for years. She’s now surrounded by screens in, again, true creep AI fashion. How did she get all this while she was locked up? Oh, just the three bug girls she created as friends prior to killing the wife. They’re devoted slaves, I guess. So the uncle says enough of this insanity and seemingly sets Frill on fire.
OH and Frill’s subtitled dialogue also puts “uncle” in quotation marks, implying that the daughter was always Dad #2’s??
Anyway, both brothers are now super obsessed with death and claim that they think Frill has had a hand in lots of girls’ suicides, even now after her own death. This is brought into question later when it’s revealed that they might have just concocted this scheme to try and bring back their daughter. I’m really not sure. Regardless, they use hand-wavey science to create eggs that I guess contain the souls of young girls who have committed suicide, then they sucker in other young girls who have lost people to suicide to try and rescue their loved ones in a dream world, saving others along the way. A tomboyish girl, Momoe, lost a classmate who admitted to loving her, but who Momoe rejected. Rika, a former junior idol, used and rejected an overweight fan only to learn later that she’d starved herself to death. Neiru, the 14yo president of some science company (yup) was attacked by her sister before she jumped off a bridge. Finally Ai, our protagonist, is a victim of bullying who managed to make friends with a single girl, Koito, who then jumped from their school building for unknown reasons. They’re all given the chance to bring these individuals back to life, provided they protect other victims of suicide by defeating the monstrous traumas that drove them to that act in the first place.
And you know what? That concept was great. However, the execution ranges from “Okay, that was pretty good for an anime. Kudos there” to “That’s the most offensive thing I’ve seen in my life.” Needless to say, unpacking all the battles they fight would take a lot more than this already absurd summary. Basically, if you can think of something horrible to happen to young girls (and one trans guy whose existence in that egg undermines the whole message of the episode), there’s an attempt to tackle it here.
During all this the four girls become friends and Ai works through her suspicions about Mr. Sawaki, a teacher at her school. What’s going on with Mr. Sawaki? Uh… everything! He’s somehow connected to Koito’s death, he’s dating Ai’s mom, and Ai apparently loves him too because her friends say so, even though this is never actually addressed and she barely interacts with him. It’s all quite the complication.
In time though the girls complete their “mission” of bringing their loved ones back to life. Rika and Momoe manage it first, only to find that Frill’s bug-girl lackeys have arrived to kill them. Why? Because that’s what Frill does, I guess. Momoe’s crocodile familiar (cute animals the girls were gifted to help them fight) takes a killing blow for her and the bug-lady then proceeds to carve up his corpse and force feed it to Momoe. Fantastic!! Building off of that, the next bug-lady who Rika encounters kills her turtle too, following in the footsteps of her bug-sister by, presumably, forcing her to eat parts of its head. Ai refuses to sacrifice her familiar to stay alive, but luckily the suicide she was protecting turns out to be herself from a parallel universe (that's a thing now!) and she takes the killing blow herself, which is done by pulling out the eye she’s sensitive about (she has heterochromia.) So parallel Ai passes on (again?) and the three girls don’t work through this trauma at all, instead becoming more traumatized through the realization that the loved ones they brought back no longer remember them. They’re alive, but the relationship they all had with them is dead.
It’s about this point that the main storyline wraps up and I’m relieved that there’s an OVA to finish things off. Surely they can somehow bring this all together in 45 minutes.
…25 minutes of that OVA is recap.
So with only about 20 minutes left, we learn that Neiru, the only one to not complete her mission yet, has mysteriously gone missing. It turns out she was an AI/clone/something all along, made to replace her sister and, presumably, that’s what caused the whole stabbing-suicide incident. She successfully brings her sister back, but stays behind in the dream world because Frill promises her she can become human. How is Frill here when she’s dead? How will Neiru become human? Isn’t Frill the “temptation of death” or whatever? There are no answers. A flashback finally reveals that Koito was having a relationship with a teacher at another school, he committed suicide, she transferred, she tried the same thing with Mr. Sawaki, he kept refusing her advances, and finally while threatening suicide to get his attention, she accidentally fell.
(So why was she in the suicide egg if it was an accident??)
Except, all this information comes through Mr. Sawaki himself, there’s a whole subplot about whether he’s really a villain, or if Ai is just making him into one, and this show might as well be titled How Much Pedophilia Can We Put into One Anime? So make of that what you will.
A dead character randomly shows up, but it's fine because she's actually just a version from a parallel world. How did she get here? Why is she here? Lol, it's cute that you think these are answered.
Rika, the character who cuts and almost committed suicide halfway through the show, breaks down saying how much she misses her dead loved ones, right after her friends refused to let her go on another mission that would surely end in her death and… that’s it. That’s all we get about her.
Momoe too, though she’s hopefully just vibing somewhere with that longed-for boyfriend.
Ai transfers schools and then one day randomly remembers that she loves Neiru and rushes back to start cracking eggs again because that will? Somehow?? Let her see Neiru???
When I say there are too many unanswered questions to possibly list here I really, really mean it.
Finally, in a personal attack on me, the protagonist with a name that is literally AI is not in any way an artificial intelligence.
And that’s it! Congratulations, you now “understand” WEP. And see, the funny thing is that the off-the-rails, bat-shit crazy aspects kind of catch you off guard? Yeah, the first episode is fantastic. In fact, I think I got through about six episodes thinking that this was a solid, if at times really messed up anime, but I was willing to shrug off a lot of stuff due solely to the amount of sensitive material they were attempting to cover (which is always quite difficult to do). Probably the only reason I was able to binge so fast was because the first half of the series was so engaging. The characters are charming. The animation is GORGEOUS. There's actually a ton of good here that is also worth yelling about. But then the plot comes in like a freight train and I was left staring dumbfounded at my screen as more and more insanity kept happening. Having watched the "explanations" I am now more confused about the show I just saw.
Phoenix, if you’ve bothered to read this rambling, 3:00am rant: thank you. I think? Idk if I should actually be thanking you or cursing you for tuning me into this, but it was definitely an experience, that’s for sure lol.
I'm off to bed now RIP the chance of having normal dreams ✌️

SO i just finished wonder egg priority and i think that with confidence i can say it has been one of my favorite animes like... ever ?? and not even from hyperfixation or obsession over it just... its so fucking real yet so simple in a way that i havent rlly seen shown in any other shows you feel ??
but first i wanna talk about how sexy the art and animation is real quick... HOMIE ITS SO GOOD LIKE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT JUST... serotonin... the characters are all so unique and iconic and fun but not over the top in their designs yknow ??? they seem like regular every day girls but they stand out and theyre all sO CUTE !!!! also i love how the style is like this soft bubbly slice of life lookin stuff with bright happy colors and the most beautiful scenes you could find but they also have the SICKEST fight scenes complete with whimsical animal helpers and terrifying villains and crazy weapons unique to each character. and the animation. god DAMN shawty i am obsessed with everything in this show. i might make a post solely about the art later lol bc i wanna get into the other stuff.
so the themes in the show right ?? it starts just as this cute lil magical girl kinda deal but within the first episode we see that like.. oh damn... thats kinda heavy... tbh i was a little shocked and thought about stopping bc yknow bad mental health BUT i was so intrigued that i had to keep going and i am SO GLAD that i did. because this show just so beautifully discusses all these heavy topics in such an eloquent and artistically expressive way. and also like, , the juxtaposition of the charming childlike vibe with bright colors and 14 yr old girl protagonists against the dark themes of suicide and so much else,, i think is just perfect. bc a lot of heavy animes are more of the seinen genre and have some middle aged dude as a protag or make the entire color palette dim or offer little relief to the pain of these heavy themes right ?? but NO not wonder egg bitches B) because these problems arent just things that ppl face later in life or just problems that need to be talked about among adults or the edgy seinen watching squad,, these are REAL problems that face people of every age, gender etc and i think its awesome that wonder egg addresses that. some may cringe at the thought of their high schooler watching animes that discuss sexual harassment, suicide, abuse, self harm, eating disorders etc,, but in reality it is the most comforting thing i have ever come across and is basically jsut free anime therapy. because not only does wonder egg present these themes to the viewers as something real that happens to all kinds of people (making said people feel heard in a way that maybe they hadnt before), but it also makes sure to vanquish all of these forms of trauma. and the way the trauma is vanquished isnt always beautiful and it isnt always just magically gone with a poof. the struggles of overcoming or living with that sort of thing are shown in such a real and relatable way that addresses every hardship trauma survivors have to go through. and i just. god i cry bro.
oh m y GOD and the lgbtq+ rep in this show ?? like shawty... as soon as i saw episode one i was picking up on some gay/lesbian themes but then again im sapphic and project that a lot so i tend to see that sort of stuff like... everywhere... but NE WAYS... episode ten made me FUKCING CRY BRO LIke i cant believe there was a whole trans character with a whole trans pride hoodie like LKGHKDGH my heart is just so.. so fucking full thinking about him. bc like yeah i know there are trans characters in anime but i feel like theyre always very ambiguous about actually being trans or not or erased or portrayed as a harmful stereotype or theyre constantly misgendered and still refered to as their assigned gender at birth and i hate it. HOWEVEr... Kaoru.. *chefs kiss* it was so amazing to see a character straight up say “yeah im trans” in such a casual yet powerful way bc i personally have never seen that before. and i love love loved how he went into his backstory and talked to momoe about gender bc i think thats what she rlly needed and that it helped her find herself and it makes me so happy oh my god,, and the way they talked about it never seemed forced or like it was the focal point of his existence yknow ?? like yeah he existed to help momoe overcome some of her trauma but he also just existed to be HIM yknow ?? also... personally, i headcanon momoe as a trans girl even though i dont remember it being explicitly stated plus the school scenes of her and stuff would seem like they suggest otherwise ??but,,, SHAWTY THE AMOUNT OF SUBTEXT and her complicated relationship w gender is... something i feel like a cis girl would not go through so harshly yknow ?? with all of the questioning and feeling detached from femininity or feeling like ppl dont see her as an actual girl and only like her as a guy or for her masculine traits,,, but dont take my word on this bc i myself am a cis girl but that was just my take on it as someone in the lgbtq+ community trying to educate myself on the transgender community :) either way,, wonder eggs portrayal of momoe and kaoru and the way that momoe becomes so passionate about expressing herself the way she wants to as a girl is just... good lord im gonna cry its so perfect,,,.so ... i just love this show way too much. i also am honestly super lost about the relationship btwn acca and ura-acca ?? bc i was gonna mention ura-acca as a canonically gay guy bc when i was watching i interpreted ep 11 as him being in love with acca and being jealous of Azusa (bc i mean,, they lived together (i swear to god there was only one bed in that apartment) and had a daughter together and def loved each other and also when Frill said they were husbands and then when ura-acca said he wasnt attracted to azusa but he was def jealous of their relationship ??) but then i saw somewhere that theyre brothers ?? which would make sense ig since they look kinda similar and accas daughter called ura-acca “uncle”.. but at the same time its ANIME SO THEY ALL LOOK SIMILAR and referring to gay couples as siblings is an EXTREMELY common euphemism soooo... IM JUST LOST HERE... but yeah i tried doing research and found different things so i cant say anything for sure >:( however,,, if they are canonically a lil fruity for each other... when frill refered to acca as ura-accas husband i imploded dude you never hear that sort of wording in anime.. but if theyre related i am so sorry.
god this is so much longer than i planned it to be oops but i also love the theme about like.. relying on friends to help carry your weight but at the same time not becoming completely dependent on those friends and using their support to learn how to love yourself and rely on yourself yknow ?? bc that is exactly what healthy friendships look like. bc i think ai sort of had a codependency thing goin on with koito maybe ?? but now she has a whole squad of funky friends that are so so different but all struggle with different kinds of trauma and although they fight over it, they always get through it with each other together. and they push each other no matter what to be the best versions of themselves and they teach other that getting hurt is okay because theyre always gonna be there to pick up the pieces no matter what happens. they can give each other space when they need and adapt to meet each others needs but theyre always able to balance it out with their own needs and thats such a beautiful thing in friendships especially at their age like damn i wish i had that maturity when i was 14 but no all i had was depression. another thing is that through these friendships you get to see all the different sides of each girl; you get to see them being strong or a shining light to their friends when theyre hurting but you also get to see them being hurt and weak and allowing themselves to be on the receiving end of the comfort. their friendships allows them to have weaknesses but it also allows them to highlight their strengths and thrive off of each others. I LOVE FRIENDSHIP DUDE
next i wanna briefly mention some of the themes connected to suicide that ive noticed. a big one is the survivors guilt that ai feels once koito is dead. several times she screams that she wishes she couldve gone with koito and she dreams of a “perfect world” where they committed a double suicide. one of the main reasons for her troubles is that she blames herself for koitos death and feels like it should be her thats dead... but at the same time she feels like too much of a coward to do anything now that koito is gone. she just has all these complex and contradicting feelings that wear away at her in ways that ppl that havent gone through the suicide of a loved one could never imagine. a lot of the times when things like this are portrayed in media i feel like its more in a way thats meant to guilt trip those that have taken their own lives and paint suicide as this selfish sin thats unforgivable but... not only does wonder egg reject that idea and instead portray it as a heartbreaking tragedy with,,, so so many terrible reasons, but it focuses on the feelings of ai separate from koito without blaming her in any way. not once did i feel like the show antagonized koito or that ai blamed koito for doing any of this, but they simply mourned her loss and touched on ais reaction towards the event but separate from koito herself if that makes sense. and i think that discussing survivors guilt without painting koito as the bad guy is something so beautifully done in wonder egg that can really resonate with those that have lost a loved one to suicide and have struggled with these same things.
okay i think this is the last thing ill mention,,, but HOMIE THE PARALLEL UNIVERSE BIT AT THE END. I AM. OBSESSED. i am such a whore for anything about the multiverse okay n e ways...,, not only did this make a super epic trippy ending of season one and add a little bit more magical girl whimsy to the show,, but it had such a powerful message. from the perspective of og ai,, finding out that you killed yourself in another world is... i mean its definitely not a surprise but at the same time it rlly makes you think how close og ai herself couldve been to that point and what decisions led her out of that dark place in her life. if i were in her shoes i would be terrified and id cry bc the thought of going back to such a dark place and actually going through with something like that is my worst fear and probably something that ai fears too. but at the same time,,, think from the perspective of ai two !!! like yeah its true that theres this awful terrible version of ai that dies but theres also a whole version of ai that is a superhero magical girl fighting off monsters to save countless ppls lives !! and she has a badass lizard and a gang of awesome friends !!! at first i was worried that ai two would be jealous of og ai and compare herself to her and feel inferior but like.. THEYRE LITERALLY THE SAME PERSON AND CAPABLE OF THE SAME THINGS !!! and ai two realized that !! just within the span of one episode, she went from the version of ai who took her life,, to the version of ai jumping in front of a friend to take a bullet for them and save their life. and that just inspired THE SHIT OUT OF ME. i think that ai was sent another version of herself to sort of beat her own worst enemy yknow ?? those doubts and fears that shes no good or that shes that same bystander from episode one and that she hasnt changed at all. but getting to interact with her parallel self and see her grow was just what she needed to realize that while yeah sometimes the worst thing can happen and things can be terrible but on the other hand sometimes the most wonderful thing imaginable can happen because she has the power to do either.
so im gonna go ahead and stop rambling bc i got all my thoughts out that i wanted to for this post :D but yeah lol i might make another if i feel like it sometime. long story short: this show is perfect and it is going on my favorite of all times.

I don't even have an idea about where to start.
When the word lesbian and the confirmation of kaoru being trans came up I almost choked on my food. I was like no way they actually did it. Although it's definitely not the first episode to have queer representation but to have an explicitly trans character and the word lesbian appear, it's amazing.
Why tf did they have to traumatise momoe like that tho.
I'm crying bc panic deserved better
Who tf is that butterfly bitch.
And the whole thing about the fear of death. Because the temptation of death has also had a big role in the show.
And holy fuck what's up with Thanatos and Eros. Why does it sound like a big war is about to unfold. And in light of everything that's happened I'm not even gonna talk about how or why they wanna use fourteen yo girls as soldiers.
I'm glad ai finally asked the question. Wonder if we'll get an answer to that.
Bc that mf sawaki or what's-his-name is the shadiest mf ever. I'm not buying the whole I'm in love with your mother thing. Because he painted ai. Heterochromia. Why did he do that. If he wanted to paint her mom then he could've just not added ai's heterochromia. And the next episode's title, I am very much in fear. I'm dying to find out what actually happened with koito. Like a theory is that sawaki used both her and ai's mom to get closer to ai. Idk. Honestly this show is a little bit too complicated and confusing for me, my brain is fried and burnt out af rn.
Anyways back to momoe and kaoru. They were so cute even if for just a moment. And they're definitely the pair I'd root for with my whole heart if this show was something else, like a slice of life or something. The way they both just saw eachother for what they were, the way momoe blushed with her whole head, how she said not every girl wants to be protected and just their whole story. The trans flag on the jacket and the bra.
