Act 5.2 has been fun so far. I didn't realize how much I missed the kids until we got back to their PoVs.

Homestuck could have opened on Rose, watching her mother drink herself into a stupor - or Vriska, tossing a corpse into her spider's pit. These events are canonical, but bringing them into sharper focus would turn the story into something very different.

That Homestuck chose to start with John tells us a lot about its identity. It's a dark story, in a lot of ways - but there are much darker stories, two steps to the left.

I like to believe instead of lusii being the parasites, maybe TROLLS evolved as brood parasites. All these lusii seem to have consistent blood colors, and the blood colors always match the troll theyre a guardian of. I know we havent seen baby lusii, but maybe before they become "white" their babies are a bright color, and the bright blood colors of the trolls evolved as a way to trick the lusii into caring for them. Now, not all animals actually care for their young, so it's not a perfect strategy, so some creatures taking 'advantage' of this parasitism couldve evolved side by side, which I find super interesting. And with troll genetics and slurries, that made me wonder if troll genomes are particularly unstable and able to incorporate all sorts of other dna into it, like some bacteria - perhaps lending to this ‘infiltration’ power. The troll powers and mutations relating to their lusii is really really interesting, I mean we saw sollux’s ogre lusus with similar powers. I wonder if that sort of matching dna in subtle ways influences which trolls are adopted by which lusus. Alternatively an even more interesting explanation. Trolls grow their powers over time with their lusus and incorporate more of their dna over their lifetime with them. With huge wiggled populations, the way the genetics slurry with each other, and ease of mutation, perhaps it explains how intense their anti mutant and culling sentiments are, and why they might have evolved to be as extreme as they are.

This is some great speculative biology - I particularly like the idea that trolls are highly prone to mutation, like an alien Eevee.

It is interesting that Sollux shares his eye-beams with his Biclops. Their powers are identical, so there has to be some casual relationship between the two - we just don't know what direction it's in.

For sure! The added context of Hivebent really adds a lot of texture to the plot. The playing field feels wider, and the stakes are much higher.

I love the idea that every 'real' game in fiction is actually taking place in an infinite sea of monsters.

That's true, I guess, and you do need to get there to fight the final boss - but Sollux proved that you can freely fly between planets, if you have the means. The houses seem kind of redundant, if that's their only purpose, but I don't think it is.

Act 4, I think! Hivebent's troll worldbuilding is great - but Act 4 focused a lot more on Sburb's game mechanics, and that's still my favorite part of the comic.

We don't yet know the circumstances of his Exiling, but he probably needed to lose, to be Exiled the way he did.

As for why he needed to be Exiled the way he did... well, we've already talked about how weird and arbitrary these loops are. In the end, WV's army was just a casualty of causality - and messing around with causality is beyond the scope of the game.

That's all true - and I never considered that Karkat would be jealous of John's social circle. Things are just easier for him - his friends all get along, and he doesn't need to needle them into working together. Karkat's Dark Crush on John doesn't seem nearly as toxic as whatever's going on with Jack and the Queen.

Is Karkat wrong about his feelings? Do Carapacians experience kismesissitude differently? Has Hussie quietly retconned some of Hivebent's quadrant stuff?

At this point, who knows. Alternia's original view of quadrants might not even matter - it's gone, and the surviving trolls are free to do their own thing.

Computer generated imagery - week 12 - 3d character

SHES DONE!!! My character is completed and textured and I absolutely love it. The texturing went so well. I started off by isolating my hard surface areas which i am very proud of and importing them into substance painter.

I followed the original theme of making them look steampunky through rusting and the fading away of metalic paint with rubber padding and I absolutely love how it came out. I added a lot of dirt and mud to add context that she is in the forest scene i put her in which came out incredibly, i truly amazed myself by how good this character would be.

The way it renders on the character looks so good! It really firs the vibe and worldbuilding through these textures, I genuinely have no idea what else i can say other than i love it! Here are some renders in maya

I truly have done what i set out to do and that was create a steampunky archer, i love the model much more than i couldve imagined, the textures didnt carry through 1-2-1 but thats probably an issue with how i implemented them, the dirt really makes this character seem alive and as though they exist outside the render.

The last thing i needed to do was pose her, i decided to recreate the pose from the concept image and it was very difficult, for this i had to learn rigging and weight painting which both deserve some strong words im not going to put in this blog post, but i got it done and it was worth it as the pose really make it even better! Overall this runs the interactive pretty close for my fave project this year, i learned so much and am super happy with how it turned out!

fave s tier: oh absolutely demon symphony (essence antonio). hes got big devil went down to georgia energy and is just sexy/attractive in general. wish i couldve gotten him

fave hunter trait: idk. does teleport count? bc it looks useful

fave game: rickys game just bc hes in it (and antonio's too for that matter) but other than that idk

fave map: i like eversleeping town since its easy enough to get around and kinda fun to look at. i like the interactable stuff in moon river park, but dont get to play on them much

fave crossover: conan and dr1+2! tho id say dr2 for personal reasons, and it had a good array of characters. conan got screwed over in the intl release which is a shame, bc it was really fun too

fave a tier: im gonna say rickys infernal sonata for this too bc its cute and has very good energy.

fave mode: just quick match? or actually that one from last halloween where you had to find things and make it out of the maze, that was actually fun. besides that dont really care for any mode lol

fave event: 2020 christmas event. antonio cute. why he not get a feature seriously

fave essence: the s tier antonio one bc it was nice. its a shame i dont care much for the other characters but antonio is very cute and has a nice neutral role in the story

fave emote: i like that new high five one that was added. tho for individual characters, maybe the take a picture emote from the collab? or any of antonio's ones. resonance is so cute to see him playing violin

Ok so ik that rol isn't canon to the show, and that the ds games are mostly canon, BUT. Do you have a preference for their lore/stories? Basically, shattered crystal vs rol: which is ur preferred take as a prequel? I love the chaos crystals from rol and I don't like the lost crystal of power from shattered crystal, so I prefer rol for that reason. I think shadow was handled much better in shattered crystal tho, but the japanese dub of rol is virtually identically to shattered crystal wrt shadow's characterization (in the jpn dub, shadow was under lyric's control a la shattered crystal, and that's why he shows up to fight sonic & tails; sorry for mansplaining if u know this already), soooo like yea the jpn dub of rol is prolly my overall fave take on the lyric/prequel debacle. Curious 2 hear ur thoughts. Bc I've got a billion of them.

haha yes im aware that the japanese dub of rol added mind control to shadows situation! (though you said it was shattered crystal in your ask, which im assuming was a typo) digressing a bit here but i hear that overall the jpn version of all sonic media is much better at portraying its characters even with the tonal shift that happened between the 00s and 10s so afaik theres also a lot less discourse about the characters being written "incorrectly" over on the jpn side of the fanbase, and by extension theres a difference between how jp fans and eng fans see the charas but anyway back to boom. keep in mind that i own neither a wiiu nor a 3ds so i wouldnt be able to play either game even if i wanted to, and therefore im strictly going off of the cutscenes that ive watched and hoping that there isnt anything in the levels themselves that i may have missed.

my overall thoughts concerning rise of lyric and shattered crystal can be summed up as this: shattered crystal is the better game, but rol is by far more ambitious. i didnt... really catch any significant lore details in shattered crystal at all tbh? at least, not in the game itself - the prequel comic explains a little bit on what amys doing at the beginning of the game and what lyrics plans are, but at the same time... not really? the comic kind of just hops around from the ancients to shadow to amy to fill in the gaps that the game itself doesnt answer. and i wouldnt really call much of it very interesting, like lyric is looking for the crystal shards because he wants ultimate power? sorry not sorry but thats incredibly boring. also what was he doing during the time between the shattering of the lost crystal and the present day? how is he even still alive? shattered crystal just doesnt go very deep lore-wise. this isnt to say i dont like it because i do and im slightly bitter that its position as the followup to rol made it so hard for people to give it a chance. im not saying its the best game ever or anything, but the gameplay looks very fun and shadows role makes me smile

as for rol....... oh GOD. even without experiencing the infamous glitches in the gameplay, the cutscenes are so awkward and the script is executed so poorly that its hard to care much about whats actually happening BUT i do see. i see the vision. the vision of its lore, i mean. i dont care much about the difference between the chaos crystals and the lost crystal of power (imo the crystals themselves are the least interesting thing about their universe lol) but like i said at the beginning rol seemed to be going for something while shattered crystal wasnt. for one, i think lyrics motivations in rol are better, since we have that one scene that goes into his backstory and why he hates organic life so much. unfortunately, however, i dont think they did the concept justice, because there was so much more they couldve done with that - he couldve been an amazing narrative foil to sonic (someone who was slowly warming up to people throughout the course of the game, as opposed to someone who felt wronged by others and wanted to exterminate everyone) and his view that technology was the only thing to be trusted couldve been challenged when MAIA betrayed him. that just one example of how i consider rol to be a giant sack of wasted potential but if i were to go into every single thought i had watching the cutscenes, id crash everyones dashes, so ill save that for another time. oh and obligatory mention of shadow here, the way they included him in this game sucks, you could take him out and nothing would change, i hate it as much as the next guy but also its genuinely kinda funny that hes just there. did anyone else notice that how important he is in the boom games is sorta the inverse of metal sonics own role? when one has an effect on the plot, the other is there just to be there and fucks off immediately afterwards. there can only ever be one active hedgehog nemesis at any given time which is the real reason the s2 finale went down the way it did

so to finally answer your question, i like shattered crystals story better but my favorite version of boom lore is what rol COULD HAVE been if it hadnt been so poorly made. but to tell you the truth i dont think that hard about how to connect the games to the show? im not saying id never include mentions of lyric in my continuation but the show feels so disconnected from the games (naturally, since they were completely separate projects) that its hard for me to consider either one of them as an official prequel. much love to everyone who puts in the effort to connect them though

was gonna make a post recommending books to the old guard because Im Me but i dont read diversely enough to get a good list however here’s what i have decided based on nothing: booker (who enjoys a good classic and is very depressed) needs to read arcane ascension OR stealing sorcery (which is a sequel but we’re ignoring that fact) because he needs a good comfort read and i think he’d probably do good getting angry every so often instead of the depression that’s Constant, and i think lord cadence will do that to ya (the way lord cadence is even more evil than the tyrant in gold because at least the latter is honest about it. smh.) (stealing sorcery would just be fun because i like friendship and i think booker would too) nicky gets house in the cerulean sea for gay happiness reasons. joe also gets this book for the reason which is: they share books no but in honesty joe gets the middle grade WONDER which is lydia’s hemlighet/lydia’s secret, a book in which a young girl touches paintings and gets transported to the time and place in which the painting was made. actually booker should also get the little odessa which is more or less the same thing but with books and old fart writers nile’s book im basing entirely on the fact that she likes frank ocean so i think she should get something which is written beautifully, probably in prose. i actually do have a specific recommendation in mind but i havent, like, read it, so i’m just giving her the entire genre of books-in-prose. also tho, she’s a Modern Woman tm who just got told she’s gonna live for ages and eons so the whole genre of speculative scifi is also for her (and maybe in specific, because i just read and loved this book, embassytown. or even a long way to a small angry planet because it also has found family which is another thing miss freeman could relate to) andy’s a horse girl so like [gestures to all the middle grade horse girl books that exist], or, for a laff, i think it’d be funny if she’s actually an avid philosophy of religion reader because she may think it’s bogus but that doesn’t mean it isn’t INTERESTING bogus

okay wanna say this first; the complete erasure of wonho was smth i knew abt beforehand (& was expecting anyway) and uh. that's never not gonna gut me. never not gonna sting. he did so much for the group i wish they could at the v least leave old clips & photos be..would they then need to actually credit him?? (also why didnt they use his real name in the song credits?? did they not use his real name for aal??)

smth i LOVED was how the stages were mixed. i don't think i mentioned this before but i RLLY loved the love killa stages last year bc they added mbbs fanchants & cheering it made watching those feel a lil more complete in a way? even if no one actually there. anyway they added cheers again & the stages were SO LOUD compared to the interviews like my ears were ringing after we left lol. felt like a concert in a way & rlly felt like we heard them live & that's the closest i've been so far. anyways, yea, adventure time s1 retrospective (except rubys tired n will most likely rewrite this at a later time)

i remember the exact time when i first heard about this show. it was when i was watching recordings of the clone wars, and i remember seeing ads for this show. it was either of the show actually or this live action campaign where it was of a kid cosplaying as finn running around, asking everyone "WHAT TIME IS IT???"

so as you could tell from great advertising like that, i was hooked. and so was my mom actually!! this was one of my moms most recent fave cartoon shows (she also likes gumball, gravity falls, wander over yonder, star vs, amphibia, & the owl house; u can kinda notice a theme here over what channel she preferred)

but, yea, despite how childish the show was, i still. couldnt believe my 9 year old ears when i heard these cartoon characters on a kids show say "sexy" alot, i was really quite surprised about it back then!! and even now im a lil surprised, esp when u remember how cartoon network now isnt really like cartoon network 10 years ago

quick tangent, i always thought it was weird when in the second episode, lumpy space princess would yell "WHATEVER ITS 2009!" bc my braind would think "huh???? isnt it 2010, why didnt she say 2010???" bc thats when the first season started. of course, that was before i realized how long cartoon shows actually take to make

anyways, if you've been a longtime fan of adventure time, then its defo weird watching the first relatively chill and laid back first season again when you compare it to like. the fourth-fifth season and how intense they get (esp with the story)

anyways uhhhh season 1 both hold up incredibly well and have aged perfectly well. they're a relic of a long gone era of cartoons and internet humor, esp considering the og pilot was as popular as say. the infinity train pilot

my favorite episodes of the first season: the inagination one, really tons of fun. uhhh ig i liked the recurring jokes of the billy episode, and it had a p good moral. i liked how the neptr episode was one of the early episodes where they gave more depths to the characters

overall, rewatching season 1 was like a blast to the past, not only bc i remember watching these episodes as they aired, but i believe we also owned the first season on dvd. so my mom would just play it in the dvd player on our old minivan and we just saw that alot. which ig contributes to my nostalgia

Tea + pkmn games specifically

i honestly dont mind that the national dex was taken out as an idea bc i love to replay old gens and can just get my faves in those games, plus coding for whats nearing 1000+ pokemon was going to become a massive hassle eventually, and swsh is just half baked enough that gliscor would not be able to save it, HOWEVER!! swsh was a really fuckin weird time to do it bc the switch is more than capable of accommodating all those pokemon and all those moves. its a bandaid that needed ripping but its a bit too soon. not to mention battles are still awkwardly animated despite them saying that was their primary reason to dropping the dex. for the first console main game this was just a bad move and there was bad pr and advertising for it all around that it just culminated into the mess that is swsh. the paywall does not help.

lets go pikachu and eevee were bad. they were awful games and i guarantee you if they had happened after swsh the community would hate them more. i was initially excited because i was hoping these remakes would expand on kanto a bit, but nope. its just kanto with go mechanics, which a) do not mesh well with main series and b) is already sort of done IN THE APP ITSELF. not to mention the refusal to code non kanto pokemon, not even cross gen evos, even tho the go models for them existed at the time and they couldve done dlc with them, but they still put in kanto megas for some reason even tho that makes no fucking sense. the thing about the kanto pandering i hate is that they shove it in our face constantly but dig their heels in and actively refuse to actually change anything or update the gen. even in frlg they restricted new features to postgame, it was basically just a graphics update. which is also what lets go is, with a few things added to give some credit, but not enough and certainly not enough to make me want to actually pick it back up. “oh but it introduces the new generation to the original pokemon its good!!” yknow how else you can do that? buy the virtual console release on the 3ds for $10 and let them play it. its literally no different. i can pet my eevee at least but switch controls make even that weird and tedious.

xy was boring to me and its not something im eager to replay even when i was a kid, but its got interesting lore and potential that can be expanded on very well when given the opportunity. also it introduced espurr so inherently its decent at least

dear god we do not need a sinnoh remake yet. please take your time gamefreak PLEASE.

im very suspicious at pokemon fans who hated gen 5 when it came out but call it the golden age now. remember when people called kids the r slur over liking gen 5? i do. the games did exactly what you wanted them to at the time you dont get to cry about how gen 5 was actually good all along and was the best standard.

amy, jake, and the meeting of the santiago brothers

part one of my airplane headcanon series, in which jake meets the santiago brothers and passes their tests w/ flying colors

after making the disastrous mistake of letting teddy meet her brothers and all of them instantly roasting him in the sibling group chat, amys veeerrryyy hesitant to tell them about jake, let alone let them meet him

thats part of the reason why shes nervous to tell her mom about him. the moment she dials her mom’s number and tells her she’s dating jake, the crazy partner she’s bitched about for the past however many years, the first thing her mother will do is call up one of her brothers (her money’s on esteban) and then HE will text the rest of the brothers in their dumbass brothers-only group chat and tell them everything

she’s right, ofc. Ten minutes after she gets off the phone with her mom amy’s phone is blowing up.

Some, like her mom, are shocked. christian sends her a gif of phoebe from friends shouting “my eyes! my EYES!!!” while julian responds with “yeah, isn’t he the one who eats gummy bears wrapped in fruit roll-ups and calls them breakfast burritos?”

others are not surprised at all. Lucas apparently bet David and luis fifty bucks they’d end up dating, so a majority of the gc is him bragging about all the dough he’d be rolling in at christmas.

at the mention of Christmas tony pounces, asking if Amy’d dare ask to bring jake. Thankfully Amy dodges that bullet bc both her and jake have to work christmas

The first brothers jake meet are esteban and christian since they’re the other two who live in the city. It’s actually an accident. Amy’d forgotten her brothers were coming over for dinner and jake was over when they came barging into her apartment in the middle of a property brothers rerun (thankfully nothing *else*). Everyone literally freezes the moment they realize what’s happening; jake out of nerves, esteban and christian out of glee at the chance to roast her sister, amy out of pure horror.

It ends up being fine though bc the boys brought extra spring rolls and orange chicken, jake’s two fave chinese foods

They spend most of the night swapping amy stories, which ends only when amy threatens to break esteban’s arm when he tries to bring up the time she projectile vomited all over the christmas tree one year. 

in her defense, she was ten and she had food poisoning, thank you very much

Amy still considers the evening a success bc christian takes jake’s number, with promises to catch the next home nets game together

Next is lucas, who came into town to visit amy and the other nyc santiagos for a weekend the following spring

Both amy and jake are more nervous about this one bc a) they can plan for it and b) lucas is amy’s closest brother so obviously hes gonna be judging the CRAP outta jake

It actually turns out great bc (how amy never realized this she’ll never know) lucas and jake are literally the same. person.

Luke loves cop movies, including die hard; only listens to pop queens; and he is probably the only person who knows amy better than she knows herself

Although jake could be claiming that title soon if things keep going the way they’re going

After dinner amy and jake are in the uber home when amy gets a text

knew u 2 would be great together mimi. hes much better than tedford or w/e his name was. happy for u

amy doesn’t dare show jake the text (don’t want him getting cocky)

but lets just say he gets a fab reward when they get home ;)

The rest of the brothers don’t meet jake until the following christmas, which is also when he meets all the in-laws AND all the nieces and nephews AND camila santiago herself

Jake is understandably anxious

But after three successful brother meetings and one couldve-gone-worse father meeting, amy knows he’ll do fine

Shes right of course. Christian and lucas pull him in right away to a discussion about the mets vs the yankees and amy doesn’t see him for another hour, at which time he’s gathered in a circle with at least four brothers and a couple of her in-laws laughing away about something

Over the next three days almost every single one of amys brothers come up to her and tell her how much they like jake and that she better not do something stupid and break up with him

the morning after they get engaged jake gets a notification, letting him know he’s been added to a groupchat called the santiaBROS

Immediately following that notification comes a text in the groupchat from luis

we’ve wanted to add you since last christmas, but figured we’d wait till it was official. welcome to the fam jake

from david: and more importantly, welcome to the gc. youre truly a santiabro now

Amy’s thrilled, ofc, because not only have her brothers truly accepted jake as one of them but also because she now gets access to their boys only gc

She makes the mistake of telling jake this, who immediately tells her in his most serious voice, “i cannot share the secrets of the santiabros amy, what kind of man do you think i am?!”

AURORA. Very important question for you on this Tuesday night - what is your opinion on the HP scores and could you order them from fav to least fav?

what an excellent and essential question. i admit that it’s hard for me to approach this matter from an objective point of view as obviously my opinions of these scores are very intensely affected by nostalgia and my experience w the film itself, but i shall try my hardest to just evaluate the scores on their own merit. 

RANKING OF THE HARRY POTTER FILM SCORES, FROM WORST TO BEST:

7. deathly hallows part 1&2 by alexandre desplat

i remember when it was announced desplat was going to be doing the last 2 films and it was so exciting to have such a Hot Composer taking on the final two films… but i gotta say he severely disappointed me and i haven’t forgiven desplat since. these films–especially part 2–were the culmination of the entire franchise, and should’ve been fucking epic masterpieces that evoked the previous films’ score. instead, desplat largely ignored the iconic potter themes that williams and others created and went in his own direction which like… isn’t really the right move for the last 2 films of a franchise imo. 

and im just not super a fan of what he came up with?? like ‘lily’s theme’ is good, but im not sure it really fits potter?? and i just feel like a lot of the final battle stuff could’ve been so much more epic and emotional like. it doesn’t take a lot for a bitch to cry in a harry potter movie but desplat wasn’t helping me out u know. anyway i honestly like the score he did for fucking new moon better than for potter which …….is not great. 

6. order of the phoenix by nicholas hooper 

i am trying not to let my hatred of this movie cloud my judgement here but like even so i think this is one of the weaker scores. there are just so many annoying tracks lmaooo that like they blast at the wizarding world parks u know. like umbridge’s theme… i get its SUPPOSED to be annoying but still its not a fave. and like i think again the stuff in the ministry of magic during the fight scenes couldve been better. its just not a fave tbh but i do like a few themes like particularly the track ‘a journey to hogwarts’ is very sweet and sirius’s death moment was well done. but overall there are more tracks on this one i skip than play. 

5. chamber of secrets by john williams

this is where things get rly tricky bc i legit love the rest of these scores. but i have to put chamber here because i feel like a lot of its greatness piggybacks off the genius of the score of sorcerer’s stone... which isn’t a bad thing at all but. it doesn’t bring a ton of new stuff to the table. however i do love the ‘fawkes the phoenix’ theme!!! so!! much!!! and lockhart’s theme is very funny and cute. we do edge into a saccharine territory a bit when it comes to tracks like ‘reunion of friends’ but like i cry every time so who fucking cares. 

4. half-blood prince by nicholas hooper

i really really love this score as a stand alone score, and i almost put it higher on this list but i feel like this score totally abandons all the potter scores that have come before it and does its totally own new thing. this isn’t really the scores fault, as im sure like david yates told hooper to do this you know, but it deviates so far from the original themes instead of just adding onto them, so much so that if you just heard it without watching the movie you might not even associate it with the potter movies at all. again, this probably isn’t hooper’s fault but i think this was a big mistake for the sonic evolution of the movies. the potter movies failed to create a cohesive sound across all the films, and i think it is worse for it. can u imagine if the harry potter movies were like the lord of the rings movies, where they bring back themes from the first movie in the final one and the audience recognizes them subconsciously and the moment is all the more emotional because of it? tbh just a missed opportunity imo. 

but anyway just about this score on its own, it has some of the best standalone tracks in the entire movies tbh. the one that stands out the most to me is of course ‘dumbledore’s farewell.’ such a hauntingly beautiful song--i remember seeing this movie for the first time and this track pierced me to my core. i also love how this score uses harp like in ‘when ginny kissed harry,’ and how it uses choral arrangements?? like in ‘in noctem.’ honestly i adore this score so much but i have to rank it lower because i doesn’t feel like it serves its purpose in the potter movies as a whole well :( 

3. goblet of fire by patrick doyle

idk why patrick doyle only did the 1 movie because i really like this score. i know its super hard to follow up john fucking williams lmaooo but i feel like he did a pretty good job of drawing from the original williams themes but also incorporating some new stuff to fit the darker tone of the movie. there are some of my favorite potter tracks of all time on this score like ‘death of cedric’ which is so haunting and perfect and ‘harry in winter’ which is so beautiful and potter-esque. he also did a really good job with the action scenes in the graveyard which is v important to me. and the diegetic music in the yule ball stuff is so funny and lovely at the same time. 

2. sorcerer’s stone by john williams 

the fucking classic. the og. like, what is there to say?? talented brilliant incredible amazing showstopping never the same totally unique. like only john williams could create such an iconic theme. it’s hard for me to be objective here because i was young enough when the first movie came out that ‘hedwig’s theme’ /is/ harry potter to me, they are one in the same, you cannot separate them in my mind. but truly williams captured the magic of the harry potter world in music and enchanted everyone with this score. 

i also love the little medieval-y influences in this score that were dropped by chamber of secrets. like with the harp moments and in ‘diagon alley and the gringotts vault’ and ‘in ‘hogwarts forever!’ there’s just a very majestic and antique vibe that i really dig that didn’t really carry over to the other movies. 

i will say sometime williams gets very... williams-y in his very uhh loud?? and kinda frantic composing u can hear in like ‘the quidditch match’ which isn’t my favorite way to do action scenes, but like who the fuck cares u know the pros of this score far outweigh it. 

like. just. so manyyy iconic themes that have so much EMOTIONAL WEIGHT!!! like the moment u see hogwarts for the first time and the choral vocals... and the bells in ‘christmas at hogwarts.’ and who can keep a dry eye during ‘leaving hogwarts’??? NOT I!!!!!!!!!!! such a gentle theme of longing and home and yearning and family and bittersweet loss. it starts so small and intimate but then swELLS to this grand and sweeping tune. it’s stunning. 

1. prisoner of azkaban by john williams

this is PEAK!!! potter for me. again, hard to be objective because this is the best my favorite harry potter movie, but i also truly think this is the best score because it carries over the iconic themes of the first two movies but adds a quirky and dramatic flair that fits the tone of the movie cuaron was trying to make u know? i think u can really tell that cuaron had a lot of imput on the score and didn’t just let williams do whatever he wanted, because we get a really interesting, stylized sound that is really different from williams usual fare in such a great way. but, it still is a williams score and because of that it shines and also weaves in the past movies’ themes to give us an outstanding amalgamation of sound and melody. 

like we start with ‘lumos!’ which gets us right back into the potter universe but then we get a series of quirky new themes, like the waltz for aunt marge, the jazzy knight bus theme, and the medieval choral rendition of ‘double trouble’... iconic. and we get the dark and disturbing dementors theme (’apparition on the train’) which is very understated for a williams score and extremely effective. 

however ,,,, we do not abandon the themes from prior movies!!!!! a great illustration of how williams takes those old potter themes and adapts them for this movie can be seen in ‘secrets of the castle.’ this minimalist take on hedwigs theme is a completely different tone from the original, but still establishes that we are in the same sonic world as that film. you can also see this in ‘the portrait gallery’ where an old potter theme is played on some kind of woodwind (idk sorry) and a harpsichord, giving the odd, quirky, vintage feel of the movie but still keeping with the established potter musical world. 

i really love the ~medieval vibes~ that this score gives me and i wish this was something later scores went back to (instead of going in a jazz direction..looking at you hooper). theres a lot of traditional sounding instruments used that give it a real rustic, celtic feel rather than the grand classicism of a full orchestral sound that the first 2 movies use. a lot of harps, strings, and woodwinds!!!! 

some of my favorite tracks of all time are on this score. ‘window to the past’ is just... a triumph of emotion. its absolutely stunning in its simplicity in the beginning, and how it builds toward the end. the return of that theme in ‘finale’ when sirius is saying goodbye to harry...i truly sob every time. the isolated vocals in ‘the patronus light’ truly embody the purity of that awe and joy when the patronus is cast. and of course, of course, ‘buckbeak’s flight’ is an absolute magical joy ride captured in sound. williams refrains from using a full orchestra for most of the score, so when everyone plays together in moments like this you get the full grandeur of the scene just... bAM! it’s so fucking well done and just... perfect.

THOUGHTS ON DANGANRONPA V3 (NOT SPOILER-FREE)

This is not a spoiler-free review so only click Read More or read IF YOU HAVE FINISHED THE GAME. 

If not, don’t read this at all and if you’re on mobile, scroll down super quickly and I tagged this as ndrv3, drv3 so don’t complain or say I didn’t warn you.

Anyway, so my thoughts!!!

GAMEPLAY

DRV3 has the superior gameplay objectively out of all the franchise. It feels more polished, refined, and it looks like they really took criticisms from the previous games and improved the gameplay for this.

From the first shooting movement, it’s definitely more suited than the Danganronpa movement style when moving across the academy or map. And how easier it is to get Monocoins now just by shooting all the stuff in every room… It is definitely more reasonable than having to examine everything (EVEN MONITORS) from the previous games which was tedious and a hard way to earn coins just to earn precious gifts. Like now, it is actually possible to give THE BEST PRESENTS for every freetime even from the beginning of the game! I gave EVERYONE THE BEST PRESENT from the beginning. The Hidden Monokuma this time also are nice cause you see them in 3D and around the campus! So yeah, these were nice improvements when it comes to moving.

Now onto the class trials!

Let’s start with the minigames. Hangman’s Gambit is the best here and it’s still challenging. Psyche Taxi was pretty good even though Mind Surfing from DR2 was more challenging and can be frustrating. The classic Rebuttal Showdown was great. Argument Armament had a nice rhythm game mechanics and challenges. I especially love the unique sprite of the character involved in the middle and the transitions to the end.. really builds up nicely and when all their clothes get torn in the end, how dramatic.

But the crown definitely goes to SCRUM DEBATE. Now that was really lit. It was intense and really encapsulated the atmosphere of the debate grounds. It would have been really great if this was a minigame for the previous games but I guess it’s never too late!

Now another aspect of the trial, nonstop debate! I really loved Mass Panic Debate, it added more challenge and the Loud Voices too. I think objectively DRV3 has the most challenging Trials that I hit the Retry screen a number of times haha but I thankfully still got an A grade in all trials (playing in Mean Logic too so).

The LIE BULLET deserves to be singled out though. How lying becomes a necessary thing to do and gets you closer to the truth since every trial is designed where you have to lie once. If you lie more than once, you unlocked the backroute. (I apparently did that for one of the cases though since I found the most logical argument was to lie.) But yeah, it also gives the main story a replay value somehow cause you get to see alternate events unfold if you lie instead of tell the truth or vice versa. And yup, this game DOES involve the theme of lying so I think it was cleverly executed.

Tl;dr:

Gameplay-wise, DRV3 is objectively superiour and the best of the franchise.

CHARACTERS AND OTHER POSITIVE POINTS

Let’s start with the amazing Kaede. God, she would have really been the strongest protagonist and I was soo looking forward to play as her then felt betrayed after chapter 1. BTW, the strongest chapter 1 of the series.. really started this game off with a BANG and lots of tears. It was suspicious though how she already started strong when Makoto and Hajime weren’t as strong as Kaede so RED FLAGS there. But I didn’t like chapter 1 and I will get more into that later.

Shuichi had amazing development though and watching him evolve redeemed chapter 1 so it was justified. EVEN THOUGH we find out later Kaede was wrongfully executed ugh.

All the executions in V3 are absolutely brutal. I think V3 has the worst executions in the franchise. All of them were torturous while other games had fast death executions. V3 didn’t spare you from seeing the characters suffer an agonizing death so yeah it did have a lot of impact especially since many of the characters except Kiyo died unfairly and brutally. The Kaito plot twist was amazing though and I’m glad we got to see a character not suffer.

I think it really conveyed how twisted watching such a game can be. But then again, it would have been better if they didn’t remind us it was fiction even though we know it is.

Personally, I think V3 has the strongest cast because everybody had strong character development including the survivors.

Before everyone was sent off, we all got to see their talents and how their characters evolve. Also how unlikely the survivors are here.. I totally didn’t expect Himiko and Kibo to survive. I did get Maki and Shuichi though since Maki was like a deadly Kirigiri.

I ended up loving so many students. Kirumi is best girl though. Of course, there’s Miu too and Maki. AND GONTA AND KAITO ARE MY HUSBANDS. And you end up loving the rest in their own way.

tl;dr:

V3 definitely has the strongest cast but couldve gotten a strong protagonist and I can go on and on why but for the previous DR games, there were characters I didn’t like but for V3, I loved everybody even the twisted ones cause like they really were interesting fascinating characters haha

SOUNDTRACK

Amazing.. A+

Nothing else to be said. Phenomenal. So let’s go with the Ending

CHAPTER 1 AND ENDING AND STORY CRITIQUE

I honestly wish that they made Kaede stick around longer til chapter 5 at least then protag switch. Kaede had sooo much potential to be the most complex character. chapter 1 was messily executed imo (pun intended) and was just done for shock value on the get go imo. It would have been more impactful if we actually lost her towards the end of the game and been a different formula. In all DRs, the most advertised and significant character died on the 1st chapter and V3 isn’t an exception except for the fact it was a protagonist switch. I still think the switch could’ve been happened later.

I think the whole meta plot twist was brilliant. THAT BEING SAID, it could have been executed differently but still conveyed the intended message and the philosophy of Danganronpa. 

So, in the end we find out that this Killing Game was orchestrated by the real world and Tsumugi is the mastermind of this game. Okay, so let’s talk about Tsumugi first. I honestly think that Tsumugi as a mastermind was clever.. who would have expected the Plain Jane of the class will be the mastermind; it is a totally danganronpa plot twist but at the same time the iconic Junko makes an appearance thanks to her ultimate talent as a cosplayer.

I liked Tsumugi as a mastermind but I didn’t like how it was executed (no pun intended). If she actually had development, she would’ve not ended up being one of the least fave characters in the polls. I liked her motive though and it was really sinister but she was such a background character. i wish we actually saw her play a significant role throughout the game. She has a really cute character design so in my opinion, she’s a strong mastermind. Junko was flashy and sexy and out of the class whereas Tsumugi was still sexy but presented herself as ordinary and is a “survivor” since her talent makes her extraordinary so YES I think Tsumugi as the mastermind is perfect but it would’ve been better to see her play an active role throughout the game.

It was also clever that DR would mislead us with Kokichi who I think is one of the best characters in the franchise alongside Komaeda. I was fooled into thinking he really was the mastermind with his lies! BUT THEN I REMEMBERED, this is Danganronpa and there will ALWAYS BE PLOT TWISTS, it’s not that easy and I was right but I didn’t know how to explain it. Actually, I thought it was Kaito who I love btw cause he was suspicious and it turned out that it was neither of them and they worked together in the end. Chapter 5 of SDR2 and V3 are definitely iconic chapters in the franchise. So back to Kokichi.. I think it was brilliant writing with no continuity errors that he ended up being the dark knight of this game or the unlikely good guy when he always presented himself as a villain. I must admit I hated Kokichi especially after Chapter 4 when he sacrificed Gonta but then Kokichi really had no choice, who else could’ve killed Miu (RIP btw, I also really loved Miu). And while I was angry that Kokichi said he was fake crying for Gonta.. after the ending and his dying words, I can see that he was just using his lies to mask his thoughts and he really hated this killing game. So yes, Kokichi was manipulative and deceitful but this game proved that such a character can end up being the “good guy” here since his ultimate goal was to lure the mastermind out through the killing game and even confuse the mastermind.

So I kinda got off a tangent I know so lets go BACK to the ending. I think the weakest point of the ending is the fiction aspect. I feel like that was totally unnecessary and the message of Danganronpa could have been portrayed if they just went meta, we were the audience, and said that the universe of V3 isn’t fiction. It would have been more effective cause we would have felt more sympathy for the characters playing this twisted game and they could still end the game by not voting at all and having the canon no hope or despair ending. We would have gotten the message and the philosophy while making the rest of the Danganronpa including V3 matter. Sure WE KNOW they are fiction but we didn’t have to be reminded especially for 3+ hours since the trial lasted 6-8 hours gosh.. It was really tedious and LOOONG.

Presenting Danganronpa as fiction makes everything seem meaningless and I feel that’s why the ending was very polarizing. I feel that if they left Fiction out and just went Meta that everyone in the Killing Game is us then that would have better conveyed the message without leaving a sour taste about the significance of the previous games cause many felt that everything was a lie and meaningless even when Team DR didn’t intend it since they wanted to critique violence in media and how twisted enjoying playing games such as DR. Personally, i am rooting for Hope everytime but i see now how hope and despair will not end the cycle of this killing game so i love how neither hope nor despair ended it.

So yes, I love that the contestants were fans and wanted to be part of the Killing Game. It was a smart plot twist and could be satirical since who knows if there are really players out there who’d have the mentality of the students. So yeah, the whole Killing Game being orchestrated by an audience would have been brilliant. I just hope that they blurred the idea it’s fictional and made Danganronpa seem real cause yes we know it’s fiction but we play this game for escapism and the thrill. We didn’t have to be reminded of it and we WOULD STILL GRASP the message. 

After all is said, I really love the mastermind’s motive and plot twist of this game. It’s a satire to consumerism.. Supply and demand was such an important concept here. True, Tsumugi just saw life as a way to satisfy demand but i think it was so despairful cause WE ARE THE MASTERMINDS.. us playing Danganronpa, we play for the thrill even though our intentions are different. 

Personally i played to see Hope triumph over Despair. and Tsumugi and the whole ending made us see that even rooting for hope wont end the killing game. And it was so twisted cause Tsumugi was a representation of the irony behind Danganronpa. It was awful true but at the end of the day, she represents team Danganronpa and we love that game so yeah it was so meta. Hard fact but Tsumugi’s motive was strong and makes you ponder. (but AGAIN, i wish she had a more explicit active role throughout the story)

Tl;dr:

So did I love it or hate it? I loved that it had a self-aware message but it could have been executed better (no pun intended. damn im sorry). It is a strong installment in the franchise but it is not without flaws. Protagonist switch would’ve been better in chapter 4 or 5. That being said, I loved most aspects of it but I dislike how they tried to layer so many things onto each other that it ended up being convoluted. I feel that if they just said that the V3 universe was real and left fiction out of the picture, we still would have grasped the message. They should have just left DR1 and DR2 as fictional in the V3 universe while the Killing Games in V3 are reality. And I feel with that clarified, the ending would have been less confusing.

Nevertheless, I love how the ending didnt follow Hope winning over Despair and was a completely different ending. And yes, Tsumugi as a mastermind was amazing.. totally despairful and has a strong message. But yet again, the story could have been reworked and delivered more strongly.

However, the entire ending could have been a lie right? I mean the game's theme is Lie vs. Truth so who knows what really was the truth or not? I guess we’ll find out if we get another Danganronpa game… because at the end of the day, Supply and Demand!

f-h thoughts

-realtalk since new years and the absolutely atrocious content for it (the paralogue story, that awful voiced thing, and the tempest trial story) its been difficult to even go on the game bc of how racist the eng fandom is and how awful and uncomfortable the book 1 characters are. the dancer tempest trial last yr was worse however, since at least im fine w fjorm and lethe from this one.

-i am a little annoyed at the new banner but tbh it just continues the trend of “banner for game i like but no faves are added/the worst characters are added”. i am annoyed w how they keep bringing down 4/5 to boost up 16, its just rlly scummy and with no respect to 4/5 and the people involved in them. i couldnt care less abt the stats/weapon choices, and i get theyre trying to build hype/stretch out the game cast as much as possible, but its still eh. they couldve easily put johan/johalva in as the 3-4 star, or even had a funny event to get them, but its ruined by these stupid loud fans who get butthurt when their best boi uwu doesnt have their favorite op stats.

-speaking of which its getting really annoying tbh. they finally make an echoes banner but no fernand or luthier (and coupled w that i dont like most of the cast too). they make an 8 banner but no knoll. they make a 5 banner, no amalda, a 4 banner, no johan and johalva or areon (even tho any of them could have easily been included bc of their ties to the banner center characters). i fuckin hope 1. they make more banners for esp 15 and 8 soon, and 2. that the 7 banner has heath and renault. it heckin better.

-as far as the book 4 story, im cautious due to how awful book 3 was but the characters themselves seem fine. the new dark elf is really cute, and i like her story, and the dream king looks interesting too. im utterly apathetic towards the player sprite, theyre boring and annoying and i have no interest.

-i do want to maybe start to not play ghb for characters i dont care abt or like. theres... maybe at least 4 since mid last yr where i was just ...... abt the character from it. sure its a free character, but i never use them so whats the point if i dont care abt the character. i barely have any space anyways so. just wait for the reruns to get 1 copy, since those require part of it cleared and give orbs.

honestly i think if it wasnt for the daily orbs and constant events i want to complete id probably drop this game for how uncomfortable and bad a lot of the required parts are (book 1 characters especially). i do still love my faves from it, like laegjarn and hrid, but i also still love my granblue faves and that game is awful. i have no regrets of not playing it and i think id have more regrets if i went back to it.
