He shifted his weight to his other foot awkwardly, his smile warm but nervous-looking now.

He wiggled his arms a bit, his own cheeks taking on the slightest of a pink hue. 

"I remember you saying that you didn't have a Valentine this year, or any of the other years for that matter. So I figured I'd spoil you."

"I...I don't know what to say." 

The Son grinned, his boyish charm ever-present. 

"Thank you would be fine." 

You chuckled, willing the heat that prickled the tips of your ears to go away. 

"Thank you, Jax." 

You opened the door wide and let him into your home, not for the first time. He was your neighbor going on a year, and the both of you had enjoyed each other's company on and off in the recent months. He was a single dad and you were just single, both of you forming a friendship that every now and then seemed to be just a little bit more than that. You had a crush on him for a while now, late-night deep conversations making you fall for him on the nights when you watched the boys if needed. You'd learned about him and in turn, he'd learned about you. Which was exactly why he was here now. 

He placed the items down on your counter and turned back to face you with a suddenly sheepish smile. 

"Figured you didn't have a Valentine and neither did I, so it only made sense right?" 

You nodded, butterflies in your stomach. 

"I feel bad, I didn't get you anything. I didn't want to seem,..."

You trailed off and the Son smirked. 

"Forward?"

You nodded and let out a soft laugh. I also didn't know if I had been reading too much into things." 

Jax leaned back against your counter, and shrugged, blue eyes sparkling as they gazed at you. 

"No reading too much into anything here. I'll have you if you'll have me." 

He was playing it off cool, but the truth was he was just as nervous as you. He liked you, had for a while now, but shared the same apprehension as you. What if you were just being nice? What if you only wanted to be friends? What if he had just too much baggage? But seeing your giddiness, he knew the feeling was mutual. You smiled softly, his eyes drawn to the warmth of your smile and your eyes and he held both hands out towards you. Steps slow, you made your way up to him, placing your hands into his and sighing happily as they closed around yours. He tugged you into him suddenly, laughing at the gasp you let out as you tumbled into his chest. He placed his hands on your waist respectfully high and squeezed, his smile fading as he looked at you. 

"I mean it. I like you. The boys like you. I'd say it's fair that you like me. So,"

His thumb was gentle as it traced circles into your side and you nodded softly, hands coming up to rest on his shoulders, the flannel warm and comforting under your fingertips. 

"If you're asking me to be your Valentine this year, then yes. I will." 

Jax grinned, his perfect teeth on full display. 

"And the years after that if I'm lucky."

So I may have been slightly hyped for this book the past few months

For the three of you who haven't heard about this, MMPR: The Return is a story set in the future of an alternate universe of the MMPRs; one where Jason, Zack, and Trini didn't give up their powers upon the eve of the Peace Conference, and thus the team stayed together even after high school. But fast forward twenty-two years later, and the team has broken up due to some sort of tragedy - we know from the Re-Imagine prologue in the 30 Year Anniversary book, Zordon and Alpha were destroyed by Zedd and Rita. But other stuff seems to have happened too. What is that stuff? I guess we're about to find out!

Oh, and I should mention this was written by the original Pink Ranger herself, Amy Jo Johnson. (and her partner, Matt Hotson.) That might be important to know.

It's Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #1!

= Three pages in and Jason's already getting his ass kicked. You're forty-five years old, man, you should be at the club

= I know this was debated a bit when the book was announced - how it would line up with Thuy and JDF's passings, especially after coming off the heels of Once and Always, where the focal point was Trini's daughter taking up her powers after Trini's death. (For what it's worth, this book was first conceived pre-pandemic, long before OaA. Making comics takes a long time.) And while Tommy is still a bit up in the air (despite what we'll see in a few pages) Trini does seem to have definitively passed due to illness.

While I definitely get the frustration of Thuy's passing essentially sealing Trini's fate - especially in a comic book, where you don't have to worry about actor restrictions - I'm a little more generous towards it here because Amy and Thuy were close friends and she actually dealt with her death personally compared to how the OaA writers, well......didn't. And this issue is clearly paralleling Kimberly's motivations and feelings to Amy's real-life ones, so this just feels like another part of that.

(Also to contrast OaA's handling of Trini - a) her passing here isn't caused by a graphic onscreen explosion, proving the whole "well they HAD to show it onscreen for more impact!!!" was bullshit b) her friends AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY are actually grieving and talking about her impact on everyone as well as using the non-actor-restriction to SHOW it and c) The book actually gives her a JOB. TWO jobs!!!!!!! Yeah OaA why the fuck did you send ZACK to Congress WHEN IT CLEARLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN TRINI

now he is the shyest out of them. he doesn't really know what to do with himself but he usually catches himself staring at his crush for wayyyy too long, making it evident to the people around him that he has eyes for this one particular person. and he'll probably get caught staring too rhbdbdnskdhbd. yeosang having a conversation with his crush is the cutest thing to ever witness; he has a shy but beaming smile on his face as he listens to what his crush has to say in absolute fascination.

i feel like when san has his mind set on something, or someone, he likes to just go for it head first with no regrets! so he likes being open and tries to show off his best qualities to his crush. he wants to impress them! and i think his feelings for his crush would be fairly obvious because of how much he singles them out. he would always go up to them first, for instance. also, san would want to initiate any physical touch in his relationship with them. so he might randomly wrap an arm around their shoulder and pull them closer to him as if it's the most natural thing in the world.

mingi

mingi is insanely giggly around his crush. he's so freaking adorable i can't breathe right now. he wants to be more playful and bubbly with his crush. he's always trying to avoid eye contact with them but he also wants to look at them a lot because they're so prettyyyyyy and so he ends up making eye contact a lot which he gets super flustered by, it's actually hilarious to watch. his ears turn bright red and he has a massive grin on his face. he feels like a shy schoolboy. he has no idea why he's acting the way he does when he's around them until he realises his feelings.

wooyoung

wooyoung treats his crush like he would treat his best friend. he'll tease them relentlessly. he likes the banter he shares with them. his natural charisma makes it hard for people not to be drawn to his personality, despite him saying that his personality is 'a bit rough woof'. he'll also make excuses to be with them and spend more time together, to the point where they become suspicious of his feelings for you. he wants to share things with his crush and make memories with them early on so that when they look back on their time with him you can draw from many experiences.

jongho

is another one who wants to impress his crush. he just doesn't know how to go about it. so he will try to use his social skills to the best of his ability. he may be one of the quietest but he has a lot of spirit and a lot of charm. he's got a mixture of being really confident and also the shyest person on earth. i can see him being daring, looking deep into his crush's eyes as they speak to him, and make some jokes here and there. or he will be reluctant to even look at them in the eyes once. there's no in-between, it depends on what type of person they are or if he is aware of his feelings for them yet.

I am genderfluid - for me this means that they/them are always "safe" pronouns. I occasionally feel more fem or masc but figuring out what gender you are takes a lot of energy! It would be exhausting if I always knew what gender I am so I just... don't. They/them is the default and is always comfortable for me, so just use those! I will not remember to put the flavor of the week on here anyway.
