Kaylee Bryant On "Legacies," The Importance Of Queer Rep On TV, Hosie, And More
"I have so many people constantly telling me that watching Josie on the show has made them feel more comfortable in themselves."
Tumblr media
This week, Kaylee Bryant squeezed us into her schedule to talk about their role as Josie Saltzman on Legacies. As a huge Josie fan, I couldn't think of a better way to spend a morning than talking to Kaylee about The Vampire Diaries, Hosie, our favorite books, and more! Here's everything we talked about:
1. What was your audition for Legacies like?
My audition process was very interesting because they kept a lot of it a secret. I had no script and a fake character name. And then I had my second audition, a chemistry read, which Jenny Boyd [Lizzie] wasn't even at. I walked in and immediately just flat-out asked, "This is for the twins, right?" So it was long, but short and intense at the same time.
BuzzFeed: Wait, did you know which twin you were going to be playing?
I initially auditioned for Josie, and then during chemistry reads, they started asking me to read for Lizzie. And then we had our final callback where I finally met Jenny and we both read for both roles. They never told us [who was playing who] until Jenny had her appointment to go dye her hair blonde.
2. What's a typical day on set like?
Gosh, it changes every time. If it's a busy day on set, we're talking like 8 a.m. call time where we spend about two hours on hair and makeup and go straight into rehearsals. If it's a big sort of episode that involves stunt work and wire work, you're talking about doing maybe two scenes in a day. But if it's an average day, we can do anywhere from three to five scenes and we can start at 8 a.m. and wrap at 8 p.m. It really depends. I'm surprised if I'm not surprised.
3. You’ve said you’re a huge fan of The Vampire Diaries. Josie played Elena in the musical episode — what was that like?
It was surreal for sure. They had talked a little bit about doing a musical episode since Season 1. And I always thought that they were joking when they talked about doing Salvatore: The Musical!, so when they said Josie would obviously play Elena, I was like, "Hahaha." And then I got the script and realized I actually was playing Elena. The musical aspect of it was the easy part. The difficult part was, I think, getting into the iconic Elena attire and trying to feel normal. Because we have a lot of crew members that worked on The Vampire Diaries, and they kept coming up to me being like, "This is weird. I feel weird."
Tumblr media
4. Do you have a favorite scene you’ve filmed with Courtney Bandeko (Finch) this season?
I really did love the scene that we had in the town square [when] we got on a moped. There were so many fans in the town square that were huddled in the rain — it was pouring rain, freezing cold — trying to snap photos of us. And it was kind of one of those surreal moments where it felt full circle, that I was on a Vampire Diaries spinoff in town square. It was a lot going on, but it was a lot of fun. It's always fun working with Courtney.
5. You and Danielle Rose Russell (Hope) also have amazing chemistry — what’s your favorite scene you’ve filmed together?
Oh gosh, we have a lot that are pretty amazing. Honestly, I'd say [Season 3] Episode 14 — we finally got to do a lot more scenes together. And it's always fun, especially when it's Josie, Lizzie, and Hope, because we have so much history character-wise. Any time you really get to dive into that, we love it.
Tumblr media
6. I know Josie and Finch are working through some things right now, but I gotta ask — how do you feel about Hosie?
I love it. Danielle and I loved the idea of Hosie starting from Season 1, and we kept asking and asking and asking for it. So it's kind of funny and full circle that now the fans have kind of taken our side with things, and now they won't stop asking for it. All we want is this beautiful, dynamic relationship. And I think that the fans want that as well.
BuzzFeed: Yeah, I mean, people have even been asking me about Hosie, and I don't work on the show!
Oh, I'm sure! [Laughs] Obviously I love it, though.
Tumblr media
7. Is there a particular Josie moment you’re really proud of?
Josie has a scene coming up in Episode 18 — or 19? — I don't know, but it's good. It's sort of the pinnacle of everything that Josie has felt over the past three years kind of culminating into one moment. So, I'm excited for people to see it.
8. You recently came out as queer. How has playing Josie, who’s pansexual, impacted you personally?
I felt a lot of pressure when I initially booked Josie because I was still figuring out who I was and what my label was. And playing a character who was so comfortable in who she was, it was inspiring [to me] in a way that I think a lot of other people watching the show have been inspired. I have so many people constantly telling me that watching Josie on the show has made them feel more comfortable in themselves. It's kind of amazing that we all have the same experience in that having queer representation makes you more comfortable.
Tumblr media
9. You’ve been vocal about your Asian identity, and your character has spoken Japanese on the show. Did you have a hand in incorporating that into Josie’s character?
No, not at all! So, I spoke Japanese a few times on the [Instagram] Live and one of our writers, Penny Cox, saw me speaking Japanese and immediately went to Brett [Matthews] and was like, "We need to make this happen somehow." And then all of a sudden, I had a script in my hands. So it was a surprise, but a fun one.
BuzzFeed: Are you fluent in Japanese?
Gosh, no! I'm barely fluent in English. [Laughs] I would say I speak at the level of maybe a second-grader on a good day, though.
10. If you could pitch any storyline for Josie, what would it be?
I always joke that I want an episode that takes place overnight. That way, we all have to be wearing pajamas the entire episode. I just want to wear some comfy clothes for a whole two weeks, that's my main goal. So we can have a pajama episode, that's my pitch.
11. What's it like getting into character for Dark Josie scenes?
It's different in the sense that I know Josie so well. And knowing Josie in turn makes me understand Dark Josie. I have a whole different playlist of music that I listen to for Dark Josie — and I have the wig, which helps a lot with getting into character.
BuzzFeed: Well, now I have to ask what music is on that playlist!
I think "Bury a Friend" by Billie Eilish is a great one for Dark Josie. Also, "Villain" by K/DA is a prime example of a perfect song for Dark Josie, so I listen to that one as well.
Tumblr media
12. What's your go-to Starbucks order?
Plain black iced Americano. Aria [Shahghasemi, who plays Landon] says I drink coffee like a sociopath. [Laughs]
13. What TV show are you currently binging?
I just finished watching Alice in Borderland, which is a Japanese show on Netflix. And I know Feel Good Season 2 just came out, so I think that's my next binge.
14. Damon or Stefan?
Stefan! They're both beautiful and I love them very much, but I'm Team Stefan when it comes to Elena.
Tumblr media
15. If you could work with anyone from The Vampire Diaries, who would it be?
Ian Somerhalder has a lot of dogs. So, maybe I want to work with him for the sole reason of just talking about dogs. [Writer's note: Kaylee revealed she has two rescue dogs, one whom was sleeping right next to them during the interview! Kaylee described the dogs as "both complete and total nuts," but said she misses them about five minutes after getting into the car to go to work.]
16. Do you think you’re most similar to Josie, Lizzie, or Hope in real life?
I would say I'm an eclectic mix of the three. I can be very headstrong like Hope, very outspoken like Lizzie, and I try to be as loving as Josie, but sometimes that doesn't always work. But I'd like to think all three.
17. Is there a role people would be surprised to learn you auditioned for, but didn't get?
I've been auditioning since I was eight, so there's quite a few Disney Channel shows and movies. And I'm sure people would be surprised because I think I auditioned for like, all of them. It's very funny, one of the first jobs I ever booked in television was Kickin' It with Leo Howard [Ethan]. Talk about full circle — going from being 12 years old and having no idea what I'm doing to being a series regular on [Legacies] and welcoming Leo to the set.
18. Who's your favorite Disney princess?
Oh, I love Mulan so much. She was, like, my first crush ever. I also love Moana, but it's Mulan 1,000%.
19. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I mean, I do eat rice every day. So maybe just white rice — you can make rice into candy and...yeah, let's go with rice.
20. If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one book, what would it be?
Oh no! I recently read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers, and I really enjoyed that book. Oh god, Is that the one that I want to bring, though? I mean, I really enjoyed it and it has many different aspects to it. I don't know. Or should I go with Harry Potter? I go through different genres too, like right now I'm in a big sci-fi phase, but other times I'll go the opposite direction and only read biographies. Yeah, that's super hard. I don't think I would know!
21. On that note, what's your Hogwarts house?
Initially, when I was younger, it used to just be straight-up Slytherin. And now, I recently took the Sorting Hat Quiz and I got Ravenclaw. So I'm going to go with Slytherclaw.
BuzzFeed: What's Josie's house?
Josie would be Slytherin. She tries very hard and, you know, not everyone in Slytherin is evil. She just, you know, has her way of going about things.
22. Has anything super funny or embarrassing happened to you on set?
I trip a lot on set. I get scared very easily — if I come around the corner and somebody is walking the other direction, I get scared. Everybody knows to walk slowly around me because I get scared so easily.
23. What's your wildest fan story?
I've had people cry before. And I'm an empath, so if somebody starts crying, I immediately am like, "Please don't cry, because I'm gonna cry." And then it turns into this whole thing. Once we were shooting in the town square and this young girl with her mom started crying, and I just hugged her and I didn't know what to say. So there's a lot of that. There's also the occasional, "Where's your twin?" and...I don't have one, sorry! But yeah, I would say the people who cry always throw me for a loop.
24. How do you unwind after a long day?
I have an hourlong drive home from work, so I usually listen to a lot of music. And by the time I get home, taking off all of my makeup is very therapeutic. Because over time, we're working 13-hour days, 16-hour days, and it's just powder constantly building up on my face. So, washing my face is always very therapeutic. And then just laying back and reading a book and petting my dog is the best.
25. Is there a celebrity you get told you look like a lot?
Most recently, Sara Waisglass [from Ginny & Georgia and Degrassi]. We follow each other on social media now and I completely messed up because I don't know how Twitter works at all. I forgot that there's a DMing interaction, so we followed each other and I was like, "Oh, that's nice." And then just recently, I saw that she had messaged me being like, "We're twins! We should be friends!" And I immediately messaged back, "I'm so sorry, let's be friends!"
Tumblr media
26. Who's your biggest celebrity crush?
Oh, I have so many. But consistently since I saw Orphan Black, Tatiana Maslany. Hands down.
27. Finally, have you ever caught someone watching a TV show or movie that you're in on a flight or anywhere else?
We were all, as a cast, flying to — was it New York Comic Con, or San Diego Comic Con? — one of the Comic Cons. And we were all sitting there and we saw that Legacies was actually on the airplane as an option. And we were all just uncomfortably staring at each other. Yeah, that was surreal.
Be sure to catch Kaylee in Legacies, which airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW!

marvelous
what a marvelous day for some music.
you may be thinking we’d be doing some irish themed songs today, but that’s not what is happening. “someone” hasn’t finished a playlist in a hot minute over here so i had to improvise with one i put together a couple of weeks ago....
Tumblr media
it actually worked out fine for me. if you didn’t know it, your own @loveaxiomatic is a HUGE marvel fan, some may even say super fan. the last couple of months, i have been doing a re-watch of the first three phases of the MCU (thanks, disney+ for having them in order for me right there), and i’ve been amazed anew at how damn good these movies are. i tried to talk to @theoldsmelly about it but you know, he’s not as into it as i am.....
Tumblr media
i think i am pretty much the target audience for these movies. i am not ashamed to say that every single time i have watched endgame, i have cried when cap says “avengers...assemble”. every emotional hook gets me, every fight scene i ‘ooh and ahhh’ over, every joke i find charming, and every call back they do i smile at. i pretty much can find something in all of them to like, i will even champion age of ultron, which though not a great movie, has some truly satisfying scenes in, and sets up so much of what happens after it, that i enjoy it. i may not say the same for thor - dark world, that falls dead last in my power ranking, BUT i will still watch that over a lot of other movies, because marvel movies are like pizza. even the bad ones are still good and satisfying, and better than a lot of other crap out there. i would maybe go as far as even saying that the emotional payoff at the end of phase three was superior to the way the recent star wars cycle ended. MCU just plots that shit out better.
Tumblr media
that brings us to this playlist, and today.
one of the things they get really right in these movies is the music. and as i was watching them all i was being like smelly and keeping a little list. i grabbed the ones i liked the best or had the neatest scenes they played in, and put them all in one place for us.
you know what is coming next. my favorite songs from the MCU. and don’t forget, baskin robbins always finds out.
love (it’s just muscle strain but it feels weird) axiomatic and the old (get some drugs) smelly

Book Review - Summer Summary 2020
Tumblr media
I didn’t get around to doing an individual post for the books I read in June/July/August, so I decided to choose a dozen that I read over the summer... I’d separate the wheat from the chaff for you so to speak. Though like you’re about to find out, that doesn’t necessarily mean they were all good by any means...
Crave
Tumblr media
My girlfriend got this for me to “tide me over until Midnight Sun”. Between you and me, I think she was taking the piss. Anyway, Crave is very... standard fare paranormal YA school romance with the added flare of being written by an adult erotica writer, meaning the rhythm and tone of this novel is fucking bonkers. If you want to read the novel without reading the novel, just take Twilight and the entire Vampire Academy series, shove them in a blend, and force down the sludge you get from that. Normal Average Girl Goes To Secret School In Alaska For Vampire, Werewolves and Dragons. That’s this book. It is so big and so so so bad. I finished it out of spite, please don’t do that to yourself. Unless you are really craving (hurr hurr) some top tier trashy paranormal romance, in which case... no judgment.
The Last Firehawk
Tumblr media
The Last Firehawk is a Scholastic “Branches” series, written for beginning readers (grade 1-3ish, depending on the child’s reading level). It has short stories, big text, and awesome pictures on every page. Guys. I unironically am adoring this series. It’s simple and is introducing children to a number of classic elements in the fantasy quest genre, but it is so charming. Friends Tag and Skyla discover a firehawk egg, and species that is supposed to have disappeared long ago. When Blaze hatches from it, the three are tasked with going out and finding the magical ember stone which was hidden long ago by the firehawks and which could be used to defeat the evil vulture Thorn and his dark magic... I read the first two books to second graders who ate it up and read the next four books because I personally wanted to continue the series. If you have young readers in your life (or just want a fun kid adventure) then please try these they’re the literary equivalent of nibbling on a chocolate chip cookie.
Lupin III: World’s Most Wanted #3
Tumblr media
All the kind people that still follow my tumblr and haven’t tried to murder me because of my Lupin obsession are not going to be surprised by this one. I finally read one of the manga for this series and honestly I’m delighted. Somehow even hornier than the show, but hilariously funny. I felt like I was reading a more adult version of Spy Vs Spy. It’s a bunch of short, individual bits/adventures with lots of visual gags and an artstyle that is really different and delightful.
River of Teeth / Taste of Marrow (American Hippo series)
Tumblr media
I’ve talked about River of Teeth before, but I finally finished the American Hippo duology and need to sing its praise. This is an alternate history series composed of two novellas that explore the question What would have happened if the States had decided to import hippos as livestock...? Anyways, my pitch for you: queer hippo cowboys. That’s all it took for me to read it. You have a gay gunslinger who loves his hippo to death, a nonbinary explosives-expert / poisoner who is the main love interest, a fat con artist who spoils her hippo and is the only voice of reason in this entire series, and a latina mother-to-be who is the scariest assassin in the entire series and is obviously scheming. The four of them are brought together on a job to deal with the Mississippi’s feral hippo problem.
IT’S A QUEER HIPPO COWBOY HEIST NOVEL GUYS I DON’T KNOW WHY I’M STILL TALKING AND YOU HAVEN’T JUST GONE TO READ THIS YET.
Petals to the Metal (The Adventure Zone series)
Tumblr media
The graphic novel adaptation to the McElroy family’s DND podcast The Adventure Zone. Most of you are probably aware of this? It’s a great adaptation, it hits all the important beats, shows off the characters really well, and still gets lots of good gags in even while condensing entire arcs into single book stories. This one is probably my favourite so far just because Petals to the Metal was one of my favourite arcs in the show... but you can also see how the art has improved and the chaos of the race is fun to see drawn out.
If you like The Adventure Zone but haven’t tried the graphic novels yet -- would recommend! If you’ve always wanted to listen to The Adventure Zone but don’t have time for such a long series or struggle to focus on podcasts then pick up the first book of this series (Here There Be Gerblins) and try reading it! It really is an enjoyable adaptation.
Pony to the Rescue (Pony Pals series)
Tumblr media
I continued my April/May theme of reading old-school chapter book series to combat Covid Brain Fry, so I picked up a few Pony Pals books. I read these as a kid and always enjoy them -- there’s just something so appealing to a child about having a horse. It gives your child characters a level of independence and ability to explore that you wouldn’t get otherwise. These books definitely read young, but they were nostalgic to revisit.
Small Spaces
Tumblr media
A really cool middle grade horror novel I picked up. Maybe it’s because I live around a lot of corn fields, but farm/scarecrow themed horror absolutely does it for me. One evening, after seeing a woman try to destroy a strange, old book, eleven year old Ollie doesn’t stop to think, instead stealing the book and running. That’s how she becomes wrapped up in the strange, sinister story of a cursed family and creature called the Smiling Man that seems to live out in the foggy fields. While unsettling, Ollie tries to remind herself that it’s just a story... but this becomes more challenging when her school bus breaks down one day out their own set of fields, and a fog is rolling in...
“Avoid large spaces. Stick to small.”
Snot Girl #1 - #2
Tumblr media
A Canadian graphic novel series by the creator of the Scott Pilgrim series! I love his work so I decided to give Snotgirl a try, even though it’s not generally my genre. I’m glad I did! First book took a while for me to get into, but by the time I hit the second I was really wrapped up in the mystery and character development. Snotgirl is about Lottie, a self-consumed fashion blogger whose biggest struggles are dealing with her allergies, frustration with her fellow-blogger friends, and how entirely her self-esteem is tied to her “beauty” and how people view her. But everything shifts in strange and horrifying ways when Lottie starts taking a new allergy medication, meets a new friend... and then witnesses that girl’s death. Or does she?
Seriously, or does she? I have no idea, I need to read the third book. This book is full of intrigue, complicated relationships, murder (or not?), and a healthy dose of magical realism to keep you guessing. If you like slice-of-life, crime, and abstract reality then this series is world a try. Plus the art is gorgeous.
Summer Wars #1 - #2
Tumblr media
I recently rewatched Summer Wars (still one of my favourite movies) and decided to read the two-book manga adaptation. It was a really neat little adaptation. The creator of the movie gave the writer free range to tweak things to fit better in a manga format, which means some movie elements were allowed to fade into the background, whereas other aspects were fulled into the forefront and fleshed out to a greater degree. It was very cool, it kept the same story but gave you new things to think about which I wasn’t expecting. Reading this as a stand alone works just fine, but honestly if you’ve never watched the movie Summer Wars you should give it a try! It’s a great mix of slice-of-life, sprawling family dynamics that I relate to a little too well, cyber adventures, and fantasy. Super feel good.
This One Summer
Tumblr media
Okay, last graphic novel, I swear. This One Summer was... weird and intense. It’s a coming-of-age Canadian graphic novel that follows a pair of pre-teens who meet up like they do every year at their family’s summer cottages. You see them both in the awkward phases between childhood and growing up to become teenagers, as they’re confronted with things like maturity, friendship, self-esteem, family problems, and sexuality. A beautiful read, but probably the heaviest out of all the books on my list.
Wild Thornberrys Novelization
Tumblr media
I rewatched The Wild Thornberrys movie with my girlfriend earlier this year, and decided I wanted to hunt down the chapter book novelization because I’m kind of a sucker for novelizations. Honestly, this was about what you would expect from the era. 90s/00s novelizations, especially young novelizations, are generally just a transcript of the movie without much thought or effort put into them to make them anything but. That’s what this was. It was fine, and it really let me revisualize the entire movie, but honestly you’re probably better off just rewatching the movie unless you also really deeply love The Wild Thornberrys.
The Willoughbys
Tumblr media
I saw that Netflix had done a funky looking adaptation of The Willoughbys and I decided I needed to read the book first before watching the movie. This was a little bizarre, I’m still not sure how I feel about it. Over all, I think it was a net-positive experience. It’s an obvious satire on classic children’s novels, especially the likes of Mary Poppins (real Mary Poppins, not the Disney version) and while a little heavy-handed, it does a Series of Unfortunate Events vibe that redeems it. The story is about a group of horrible children (The Ruthless Willoughbys) who decide they are sick of their parents and would rather become Worth Orphans... and to do that, they’re going to have to dispose of their inconvenient parents, obviously. Conveniently their parents are also sick of having children and decide to do away with them as well. The Willoughbys sets up three (or four?) different subplots that are gradually woven together through a series of schemes and exploits. It’s definitely more ruthless (hurr hurr) than the Netflix version, which tried to make the children more sympathetic, and in some ways I think that’s a definite point in the novel’s favour. I’m not sure I would go out of my way to recommend it, but it was a fun romp if you want something short and off the wall (and a lot more fleshed out than the Netflix version).

Marvel’s Black Widow: MCU Easter Eggs and References Guide
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains Black Widow spoilers. We have a spoiler-free review here.
The MCU is finally back on the big screen! Marvel’s Black Widow was supposed to be the official kickoff of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but then the pandemic happened, it got bounced around the release calendar, and Disney managed to release three MCU TV shows before Natasha got to take her curtain call on the big screen.
But that’s thankfully behind us, and Black Widow delivers terrific blockbuster action in the mighty Marvel manner. And you know what that means! Let’s try and spot all the cool MCU references and Marvel Comics Easter eggs in Black Widow.
The Prologue
Setting this prologue in 1995 gives us the approximate age of Natasha. If she’s supposed to be about 11 or 12 here, that conveniently makes the character the same age as Scarlett Johannsson, who was born in 1984.
The general premise of Natasha’s childhood, in which she was the daughter of two Russian spies is highly similar to that of the FX series The Americans.
This seems to be the late summer of 1995, which puts it roughly around when Captain Marvel was taking place (the official word on that is 1995, but little details in it, like Stan Lee reading a Mallrats screenplay could place it in 1994).
Young Natasha is played by Ever Anderson – the daughter of actress Milla Jovovich and Event Horizon director Paul W. S. Anderson. You will not be able to unsee her resemblance to Milla.
The first song choice in the movie is young Yelena’s fixation on Don McLean’s fixation on “American Pie,” a song about (among other things) the death of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson. That being said, “American Pie” is about a larger loss of innocence, a theme that weighs heavily throughout this film.
Before Alexei turns the radio off to play “American Pie”, the station is set to 105.1 FM. This is WQXK, a country station based in Salem, Ohio that serves the Youngstown market. Natasha and Yelena’s American home is likely based in Eastern Ohio.
There’s an episode of DuckTales playing on TV in the background while they have dinner. We can’t tell what episode it is, but DuckTales ruled, and the new series was even better. And hey, we get some payoff later in the movie when they play an aircraft crash for laughs while having everyone just casually walk it off.
Alexei was working undercover in the US at the North Institute, which he burned to the ground before making his escape. In Black Widow Vol 3 #1, Natasha decided to retire to Arizona but she and other Red Room victims were hounded by the North Institute. Spurred to investigate the situation, Natasha returned to Russia where she discovered much of the terrible truth behind her past Red Room manipulation. This was a story that also featured Yelena (and Daredevil, believe it or not).
There’s definitely an early SHIELD logo on the trucks chasing the family to the very end there.
The plane number is 258. In Incredible Hulk #258, we get the first appearance of the Soviet Super-Soldiers (later named the Winter Guard), a communist superhero team created for the sake of rivaling the Avengers. The original lineup was Ursa Major (more on him in a minute), Darkstar, Vanguard, and the fifth Crimson Dynamo (more on this, too). Over time, Red Guardian joined their ranks, though it was Josef Petkus and not Alexei Shostakov.
This is a perfect cold open, the kind that James Bond movies excelled at, and it’s far from the only Bond parallel we’ll get in the film.
The Opening Credits
There’s all kinds of stuff happening in the opening credits, including the film’s villain Dreykov being inserted into photos with various world leaders, including President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush’s Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and others. The Red Room’s influence knows no national boundaries, it seems.
The overall effect is to imply that Dreykov and the Widows have been putting their fingers on the scale for quite some time.
It’s also a nice touch that many of the “news broadcasts” we see here are from MCU staple WHIH.
There’s a shot of some vials with blue liquid, which allude to the Red Room’s attempt to create Captain America-esque super soldiers, which they succeeded with to some degree with the Red Guardian, but also makes us wonder if they tried enhancing any earlier Widows.
Smells Like Teen Spirit
The opening credits are set to a version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Malia J. You may have heard her covers of Seal’s “Crazy” and Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” in trailers for shows like Bloodlines and The Handmaid’s Tale.
We wrote more about the Black Widow version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” here.
When Does Black Widow Take Place?
This movie takes place in 2016, shortly after the events of Captain America: Civil War. General “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt) is here to remind us all that Natasha is still in trouble with the government.
What’s kind of neat about this is that it’s the first Marvel “prequel” that feels like it is designed to be watched in its chronological sequence (minus that post-credits scene, of course). Captain America: The First Avenger makes more sense as a flashback interlude between Thor and The Avengers, while Captain Marvel makes more sense as a breather between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But Black Widow feels like it should be watched right after Civil War.
Thunderbolt Ross
Natasha brings up Ross having his second triple bypass. In Captain America: Civil War, Ross talks about how he had his first heart attack while playing golf and it gave him perspective and convinced him to retire from the US Army. It seems chasing down Cap’s allies hasn’t been so good for his health.
Red Guardian
We know that Alexei has been active as Red Guardian since at least 1983 or 1984 based on the tales of fighting Captain America he tells while in jail. He was apparently sent to the USA for undercover work in 1992, and then imprisoned a few years after their 1995 escape back to Russia.
Red Guardian’s knuckle tattoos say “Karl Marx” which is kind of adorable but…shouldn’t they be in Cyrillic/Russian characters and not Latin/English? Is this to troll his capitalist opponents so they can read them as he beats their asses?
Red says he fought Captain America in 1983 or 1984. The simplest explanation is that he’s lying but…what if he isn’t?
Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he’s telling the truth and there really was yet another secret Captain America active in the ‘80s. Now that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is done, we know that there was at least one “replacement Cap” and the comics indicate there were others. Or maybe it’s just Steve in the timestream…maybe we’ll find out one day, but we wrote much more about some possibilities for this here.
Ursa
Red Guardian breaks the arm of a man named Ursa… Ursa Major (Mikhail Ursus) is the name of another Russian superhero in Marvel Comics, whose mutant power caused him to turn into a literal talking bear. He became a staple member of the Soviet Super Soldiers/Winter Guard along with a Red Guardian. While the movie doesn’t depict him like the comics, Red Guardian does joke about him being a bear.
Taskmaster
This is a very different version of Taskmaster than the one we got in the comics. Marvel Comics Taskmaster has “photographic reflexes” and is a man named Anthony Masters. Here, in addition to the new gender (Dreykov’s daughter is named “Antonia” as a nod to the comics character), Taskmaster is cybernetically enhanced to make those “photographic reflexes a little easier.
There is precedent for a female Taskmaster. The series Deadpool MAX reimagined Deadpool in a cynical, dark, and very adult (albeit absurd and humorous) way. This lent itself to Deadpool-adjacent characters. Taskmaster was depicted as a woman roughly in her ‘50s who trained Deadpool and warped his mind.
There’s also Finesse, a member of Avengers Academy, whose powers are so similar to Taskmaster that she believes him to be her biological father. Unfortunately, due to memory problems, Taskmaster doesn’t know for sure and refuses to offer any DNA to find out the answer.
In the course of Taskmaster’s action scenes, we see her mimic a number of Marvel heroes, with a particular focus on those who played a part in the recent (by this movie’s timeline) Captain America: Civil War including Hawkeye, Captain America, Black Panther, and even Natasha.
We have more on Taskmaster here.
Who is Mason?
Rick Mason first appeared in his own 1989 graphic novel called Rick Mason: The Agent. Mason was a SHIELD agent mostly remembered for being the son of Phineas Mason, the Tinkerer. Granted, the Tinkerer we saw in Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t nearly old enough to be Rick’s father in the movies and he looks nothing like him, so I wouldn’t expect any secret connection.
In the comics, Rick was practically forgotten about and killed off-panel. His son was one of the victims of Nitro’s explosion in Stamford, Connecticut from the beginning of the Marvel Comics version of Civil War.
Melina Vostokoff
The Melina Vostokoff of the MCU is pretty different from the one in Marvel Comics (who created by Ralph Macchio and George Perez in 1983). There, she was known as (we shit you not) Iron Maiden, and she was at least a former Widow-esque agent as she is here in the film.
Yelena Belova
Yelena and Natasha’s first meeting being over a bio-weapon/agent is very faintly similar to Yelena’s proper introduction in the comics, a 1999 Black Widow comics story where they were explicitly fighting over a bioweapon, not a “mind control antidote” as we see in this film.
The “face swap” trick that Natasha and Melina pull in the film’s final act also has the faintest of echoes of another early Yelena story, where Natasha “swapped faces” with Yelena to try and break her mind and get her on the side of the angels.
What Happened in Budapest?
“You and I remember Budapest very differently,” Clint Barton famously told Natasha in The Avengers during the Battle of New York. But now we know what went down…
Basically, Taskmaster’s origin story is tied to Natasha’s superhero origin. To fully defect from the Red Room and go to work for SHIELD, Natasha had to assassinate Dreykov…which meant the collateral damage of Antonia.
Of course, that led to Clint and Nat getting hounded by Red Room agents, which led to them hiding out for days together.
And before that, they were in that safe house apartment that was currently occupied by Yelena, hence the arrow damage to the walls.
Crimson Dynamo
Yelena (probably on purpose) refers to Alexei’s superheroic days as when he was “the Crimson Dynamo.” Sure, this is cute, but there really was a Crimson Dynamo in Marvel Comics! Crimson Dynamo is primarily an Iron Man villain, lots of different Russian agents have worn the Crimson Dynamo armor. It…didn’t end well for any of them.
The original Crimson Dynamo was Anton Vanko, otherwise known as the old man dying in the beginning of Iron Man 2. Although his son was known as Whiplash, Ivan Vanko was more of a cross between Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo. In the comics, “Ivan” was an alias Anton used.
We’re gonna choose to believe that Yelena isn’t just making this name up and that the Russians really did have an armored hero called the Crimson Dynamo, and if we’re lucky we’ll get to see him in a flashback of some future MCU project. After all, there’s that Armor Wars series on the way…
Also, there’s one thing that Crimson Dynamo has over the Red Guardian: he was immortalized in the lyrics of a song by a member of The Beatles. Paul McCartney and Wings have a tune called “Magneto and Titanium Man” which involves “a robbery” where “the Crimson Dynamo came along for the ride.” It’s great, and it’s on Wings Venus & Mars album.
Thor
Yelena’s line about how a “god from space” doesn’t “need to take an ibuprofen” after a fight is kinda priceless.
Mutants in the MCU
Dreykov tells Natasha that they were searching for the “genetic potential in infants.” Sure, this could mean anything like how athletic someone might grow up to be, but is there a chance they could also have been searching for a mysterious x-factor in a baby’s DNA?
James Bond
Natasha is watching one of the lesser-regarded Bond flicks, Moonraker. Of course, she still knows every word.
Dreykov gets a classic “Bond villain monologue” wherein a baddie spells out his plans for world domination before a hero who he surely thinks is either neutralized or could be swayed to their cause.
Antonia/Taskmaster is a Bond Girl! Olga Kurylenko played Camille Montes, a Bolivian agent with a vendetta in Quantum of Solace.
Remnants of the Red Room
Black Widow was written by Eric Pearson, who also wrote Thor: Ragnarok.
So… Natasha probably couldn’t taste that peanut butter and jelly sandwich from Endgame, right? That’s too bad.
It doesn’t seem that “Fanny Longbottom” is a thing from Marvel Comics, but as Mason points out it is most certainly a real name. Also, Yelena’s dog in the post-credits scene is named “Fanny.”
We get an explanation for Natasha’s blonde look in Infinity War here, as Mason gave her the hair dye. But the way it’s presented here feels slightly like a sisterly tribute to Yelena, which is really sweet.
Natasha makes a crack about “the cavalry” as Ross’ troops close in, but folks hoping that’s an Agents of SHIELD reference are probably going to be sorely disappointed.
Dreykov’s pheromone trick that he has implanted in the Widows (and Natasha in particular) leads to this scene playing out like when RoboCop tries to arrest Dick Jones in the classic 1987 film.
“Thank you for your cooperation,” Natasha tells Dreykov with a smirk after getting him to monologue his evil plans. This is as close as we get to a Black Widow catchphrase – she also ended a veiled interrogation with Loki using the exact same words in The Avengers.
The Post-Credits Scene
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) is back after her appearances in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. If we had to hazard a guess, she’s putting together a team of “Dark Avengers” or “Thunderbolts” for the MCU.
Florence Pugh is indeed confirmed to appear in the upcoming Disney+ Hawkeye series, as well.
We went into much more detail about what the post-credits scene means for the future of the MCU right here.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });

I’m quite active on the free! Fanbase and something that I’ve noticed is that the reason makoharu is as popular as it is, is because majority of its stans are people who watched free! Once like 5 years ago. They also tend to be Makoto stans and they just want it because “mako deserves it” A lot of the people who actually are into free! or focus on Haru’s feelings always ship Rinharu, and it’s because if you look at what Haru wants it’s clear that he wants Rin.
Yeah, it’s true. Lots of ppl told me that they’ve seen it completely differently after rewatching it at a mature age. But even though I can’t relate to it when it comes to anime, cause I’ve started watching it at 19, I still don’t get for what reason you can hate Rin at 13, but love at 20, you know. Just because I really can’t find any reason to hate Rin. At all. Maybe it’s cause my mom stuffed me with books since I were young, but I’ve never had such thing like I hated some character and then reread some book or rewatched some movie later and it was like a complete opposite. But at the same time, my mom recently showed her kids in class BNHA and she said that many asked “why Bakugou is so evil?” which I think is pretty dumb for a 13/14 olds to be so shallow minded.
I mean, you can not fully understand grown up stuff, like you know, disney cartoons have something that only adults will get, but generally you should be able to see past the surface. But also I just don’t think you can appreaciate Free! being very young, cause as I said before, even tho it’s not that deep and silly at times, the beauty of it to me is that it’s so fucking relatable to ppl who’s been though stuff like that. Like not knowing what to do with yourself after school even tho you have great options.. I’ve been though that. Wanting to do what you love, but being afraid that this being your job will ruin it for you... check. Recently I’ve lost my grandpa, and this was the first time I went through smth like that, and it was a horrible time for my mom and I don’t live with my parents, but actually that picture of Rin from Yakusoku was stuck in my head and it moved me to get it together and do stuff for her, I probably wouldn’t before. So it’s not as silly as it seems if you know the feeling.
When it comes to Makoto, I’ve talked about it in this post already, I do not get why he has so many fans. I find it super sad. Cause every smart adult would never see Makoto as a reliable person in life (and that’s like the main button makoharu try to push). This fandom constantly markets him as an extremely good and etc while they dont even see that usually he’s either spineless, either plain stupid (that ocean saving Rei scene just pisses me off so fucking much to this day). I feel like the “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” is about him seriously. Every good friend can bring food, but at the end of the day it’s the tough situations that counts at least to me. And when it comes to them, if anybody noticed we’re on our own. Or we need to call Rin.
About “he deserves it”... And Haru doesn’t deserve anything in their opinion? Being with the person who makes him feel alive and his heart go boom-boom, who makes him reach for the stars and see the world, makes him want silly things like rainbows in the pool... that doesn’t matter, right? haha
I think when you ship something, you should think about both sides. You can’t just love one and don’t care for other... it leads to... well, this. Cause Rin makes Haru the best version of himself and Haru makes Rin the best version of himself. And that’s how it usually works in literally all of my ships.
Also this whole thing the makoharu fans are saying remind me of Yokozawa from “Sekaiichi Hatsukoi”, who went “but I was with him all the time, when you weren’t.. you left”. That’s not how it even works dude, and just because there was a misunderstanding doesn’t mean they can’t love each other anymore. It wasn’t Onodera’s fault and Rin’s fault, yeah, they left in the heat of the moment, but sometimes circurmstances play a bigger role. Plus let’s be honest, it needed to happen, otherwise they wouldn’t be this amazing and strong as they’re right now. That “I loved you before, but the person I’m in love with right now is you in the present.” got stuck in my head forever. I truly believe that Haru loves Rin even more as he is right now, same goes to Wangxian, Mikayuu and lots of ships. Separation is sad, but sometimes its needed for characters to get to where they are now.
I feel like this ship also started at times, when it was “very cool” to brand every ship ever as “abusive” for no reason and I laughed a lot at this phase, especially young ppl tended to throw stuff like “he’s not good for her/him”, when even a light argument happened. And that’s just so dumb, cause I felt like most didn’t even know what they’re talking about, it was just “cool” xD. I’m glad this phase has passed tho, cause it started to get.. not funny lol
I find it extremely hilarious tho that after all it’s been proven that Rin is what best for Haru, which I think was obvious from the very beginning. And I haven’t seen any new makoharu related anything for ages, nor on youtube, nor on “free!” tag, so I sometimes even forget that it’s the most popular ship in Free. In 2014 maybe? I’m just happy here, cause Harurin are together, they’re happy, they got evething they wanted, and Rin is glued to us right now haha What else do I need. I’m gonna edit the kisses myself haha I’m working on stuff to get better at this lolz

I request: Leonardo. Please and thank you 🙏.
Tumblr media
Idk if everyone loves Leo or if my header and avatar just remind everyone about this amazing blue boy. (This one’s super silly btw. I’m just sillier as time goes on. Character development I guess?)
The iconic leador Leonardo (1987)
Tumblr media
Bro idk why but I loved this Leo. I have a tiny memory, especially with this version but I clearly remember that I thought he was the funniest and the coolest. I mean, he had swords, what was I supposed to do as a 7-year-old. NOT like him??? Anyway, while Raph was the best at insult comedy, I think Leo had the best puns and punchlines. I really like how nonchalant this Leo is compared to his iterations, going along with really silly ideas and having fun along the way. But because of this, his leadership is a little forced at times, he seems like such a chill and fun dude that when he gets serious, I have to squint and ask ‘are you Leo? Or were you just putting on act a moment ago?’ Or my perception is entirely warped over time. Either way, good turtle boy, could have used some work tho. 5.7/10
Here comes grumpy lad wooo this is all read very monotone btw Fearless Leader (2003)
Tumblr media
What. What the fuck happened. I was actually so confused when Leo turned really angry and serious and almost manic. I thought that episode when he popped into Casey’s window and was like ‘Hey bitch lets go beat the shit out of some lowlifes’ I was WOAH THERE BUDDY BACK UP BACK UP BACK TF UP. It was so sudden to me and when it was finally explained, it made some sense??? Like yeah, character development is great an’ all but this ain’t it chief. I can’t imagine what it was like having to wait for these episodes to release one at a time. Bc I watched every episode back to back on Youtube and I was genuinely bamboozled. But when you have an experience like that where guilt is weighing down on you from a situation you couldn’t control, it would’ve been HELLA HELPFUL to have at least a flashback, like a line saying ‘I was so useless!’ at BARE MINIMUM. Like right after Shredder is booted off to Planet Zula, Donnie would notice that Leo didn’t seem all that happy and would ask why and Leo would get upset and yell at Donnie saying that ‘You wouldn’t understand’, ‘You don’t know how I felt, how I feel because of that’, etc. Like you don’t even have to say he felt guilty or helpless, just give us something to grab onto. We’re merely six-year-olds who thought they could climb the YMCA rock wall in easy mode but instead the script riders harnessed us up on the hard one and wouldn’t let us come down until we rang the little bell at the top. I think that is the only problem I had with his Leo. The sudden change of calm and decisive to angry and irrational was so jarring that it felt unnatural without that crucial context. If you want a surprise reveal, at least hint at the reveal (like just about every Disney movie with their ‘twist’ villains) not wait until the very last moment. I think this might be my least favorite Leo and I think the season where he stood out the most and seemed the strongest was Fast Forward (Which was GOOD FIGHT ME), especially in scenes with Dark Leo, his clone. He sees so much of himself in Dark Leo but he also sees something he had once grasped (AKA the poorly written character arc, I CANNOT stress how bad I thought it was). Although, I honestly think he’s a really good character and he’s a pretty neat guy. However, this score is entirely held up by Fast Forward and his connection with Usagi, sword bros to the end of time. 3/10 (2 for FF and 1 for Usagi)
And now a Leo that makes me genuinely feel UWU Leo (2012)
Tumblr media
I cannot stress how much I like this guy! Like his design is so appealing, his dedication, his obsession with Space Heroes, like I FUCKING LOVE IT. And everyone knows, that shit with Karai, at first when they didn’t realize they were related, I can let slide but kajsdflksadf what even like why did the writers feel the need to add in more ‘love interest’ implications like yuck yuck yuck. The only two interactions with Leo and Karai that I really like are when Leo defeats her using the healing hands technique and when Leo has a goth/emo/punk/idk I’m new here phase and they team up and EXPLOSIONS. He was introduced to us as being incredibly naive and his idea of leadership is from some old cartoon that’s basically star trek but ethically questionable. After his fights in season 1, to the finale with the technodrome, you can see his growth. He’s able to formulate plans and make life or death decisions. BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE. When Leo got hurt, I felt like the oof sound effect mixed with some tears I normally shed at some Shojo manga bs. While the episodes following were super weird, it was a nice way to help Leo recover, not only physically but spiritually (Although I don’t remember the spirit arc at all except the epic Raph vs Fishface fight, so we’re skipping that). When Master Splinter really died, you could tell there was a huge impact on Leo, but he had to remain stoic and lead the family now. A lot of heartbreaking moments in this series came from Leo and I’m glad they took at least some thought into developing him. Tiny head Leo will haunt my nightmares, but the giggly fanboy will warm my heart constantly. 6/10
I only have one word for this Leo (Heroes in a Half Shell: Blast to the Past)
Tumblr media
This is a super crazy bad idea accent on the super crazy bad part have I mentioned it’s also a really terrible idea/10
Okay, spoiler alert, didn’t really think this Leo was that grand Leo (2014/2016)
Tumblr media
Painfully average. He didn’t stand out that much, Raph was part of the focus and had that touching scene at the end, Donnie was ICONIC and Mikey (with his weird-ass eyes) was super lively and funny! Leo? Uh, I don’t remember a single line he said. Because he never really grabbed my attention, I don’t have too much to say on this version. The Raph and Leo fight felt forced and the whole ‘keep this stuff that could turn us human a secret’ was pretty pointless and was added just to cause drama, I don’t even remember what that Splinter and Leo conversation was about. Design-wise, really neat! You can see some more traditional Japanese clothing/style mixed with modern (I’d feel a lot better about this assumption if some could tell exactly what the heck he’s wearing, but I get traditional Japan warrior vibes from it) in his look which was super neat! Other than that, if you like him, please tell me why because I don’t get. He was just kinda eh. 5/10
AHHH MY BOY YASSS WHOOO!! Neon Leon (2018)
Tumblr media
Okay, I loved Ben Schwarts already from Parks and Rec but like him being Sonic AND Leo, like DUDE. He’s super funny by himself but teamed up with this shows writing and animation, it makes it hilarious. I literally love this Leo so much, maybe because we’re alike but honestly, he’s amazing. I love his design with the red and yellow crescents accenting his skin and livening up his color pallet. He has a very healthy and natural dynamic with his brothers, he’s the first to know what’s wrong and tries his best to make up for his actions. This is really prominent in the most recent episodes, along with the episode portal jacked. In both, Leo is separated from his brothers. Portal Jacked is in a more literal sense, while Air Turtle handles in more of an emotional sense. While both are brief, Leo sees his error and tries his best to make it up to them. I love his dynamic so much and it’s so nice to see something like this compared to the unnecessary drama and tension between the brothers in the previous series. It’s refreshing and this is something a younger audience needs to see; instead of fighting, it’s better to work together and improve yourself along the way. Improvement is a big theme for Leo here. He’s a goofball, makes jokes at every opportunity and isn’t quite skilled at fighting or using his weapon. But he grows over time, he learns to manage his power and he’s working on mastering it. He’s trying to put aside his narcissism more and focuses on his family. I think the approach they took with him rising to leader rather than slapping it on his forehead was the goddamn best decision they could make. He’s making plans, finding loopholes, helping out and getting out of his comfort zone. I cannot stress how well this show has handled Leo, along with the other characters. I can’t wait to see more episodes about his growth and I am awarding him with one of the greatest honors I could give... 10/10
Storytime: I drew a super cute 2012 Leo, you should look at him. Shameless self-promo, but you should follow me on my main blog bc I’m nice and I draw pretty pictures. Also. I have a little 2012 Leo Happy Meal toy??? I think??? guarding my window and he’s been there for YEARS. I need to bring him in and refresh his paint job.
Wow! I didn’t expect this many requests for Leo, so the blog will be momentarily spammed with the requests, but it shouldn’t be too much! Up next should be the last turtle (Mikey) and then we can get to some REALLY great requests I’m eager to answer. As usual, please comment and reblog! I’d love to hear your opinion!

25.
Section 1 – Who were you?
Think back as far as you can. What is the first memory you have? I think meeting my (now) dad for the first time when he and my mom were dating. I was very upset because he was short and that’s not what dads were supposed to look like in my 3 year old eyes since my bio dad was super tall.
What is something you remember enjoying very much as a small child? Playing Barbies, watching Barney, Happy Meals, being with my grandma.
How old were you, when you made your very first friend? Probably preschool.
Are you still friends with this person today? Facebook friends, yeah. Real friends, no.
Was there a story somebody read or told you that has stuck with you? No one ever read to me after I learned to read for myself so one day I was sick and I came home and curled up with my mom on the couch and asked her to read me a Little Mermaid book I had and she did, even though I had to get up to go shit myself halfway through and it meant a lot to me at the time.
What is something you get an immense feeling of nostalgia from? Hannah Montana for some reason. It was my favorite show and we didn’t get the Disney channel so whenever we went to a hotel, nobody could tell me fuckin NOTHING because we were watching Hannah Montana whether they liked it or not.
As a child, were you a sore loser or a sore winner? I was the only child for 8 years and then the oldest after that so I never lost at anything and now when I do, I feel like I'm the biggest piece of shit loser there’s ever been. So that’s fun.
Did you go through the "naked phase"? I learned that you didn’t have to sleep in pajamas and you could just sleep naked so I did it for a while but then realized that I much preferred pajamas.
Which television shows do you watch the most as a child? I loved TV so basically all of the 90′s/early 2000′s shows there were.
Did you play with siblings, neighbourhood kids or by yourself? Either with neighborhood/school kids or by myself. I didn’t ever really have siblings who weren’t my kids, if that makes sense.
Is there something you really miss from your childhood today? I miss back when everything was simple.
Section 2 – Likes and interests
Would you ever like to try competitive pinball playing? Ummm, no.
Do you knit, crochet or cross stitch? I’m trying to teach myself to crochet.
Have you ever, or would you like to attend a gaming or comic convention? No thx.
What's your opinion on online multiplayer games? I really liked Among Us for a while there but I don’t really enjoy how rude everyone is on online games.
Do you like to go cycling? If so, where? Uh no.
Have you ever tried woodturning? If not, would you like to? Never tried it, don’t really have any desire to, but it can be relaxing to watch!
Do you enjoy drawing? If so, what do you usually draw? I do! I usually draw graphics for YouTube videos or doodle over Instagram photos, draw things to put on shirts with my Cricut, etc. I use my iPad for so many things.
Have you ever attended a painting class? If so, what did you create? I haven’t but I would like to!
How about a creative writing course? If so, did you get any feedback? I took Creative Writing literally every year it was offered in high school and I always got awards for having the top marks in the class.
What is your favourite form of exercise? No thank you.
Section 3 – People
Who is the most important person in your life (besides yourself)? My husband.
Do people generally approach you easily? I think so!
Do you get along with people well? If not, what's the problem? Yeah! I’m pretty friendly and easy going.
Do you enjoy being in crowds or do you prefer your own company? I would much prefer my own company than crowds.
Which one of your friends have you known the longest? I still talk to the girl I was best friends with in the 6th grade on occasion so like 17-18 years?
Do you find it easy to make friends now? If not, what makes it difficult? As an adult who works from home, making friends is hard as fuck.
What is something about people that annoys you? Something I've noticed in recent years is just how entitled and greedy everyone is. Everybody wants something from you or for your skills to benefit them without them putting in any work or paying you for your time. It’s just gross.
What is something about people that you really like? We have really, really harsh winters and if you ever find yourself in the ditch for whatever reason, there will be a lineup of cars stopped behind you to help you push it out or let you chill in their car while you wait for a tow truck. On the really bad blizzard days, there are groups of men in big trucks that literally L I V E to go around and help pull people’s cars out of the ditch. It’s the only time I feel like there’s actually a sense of community around here.
If you live alone, what would be your criteria for a roommate? I honestly would never have a roommate because they could either be your friend or a stranger and living with friends is a good way to ruin a friendship if your living styles aren’t similar and living with a stranger just sounds like a nightmare.
How about criteria for a spouse, if you're single? I am married but my criteria was honestly that I just wanted him to be kind and funny and I got that tenfold with my husband.
In general, what's your attitude towards people? I can’t stand to be around grumpy people. If all you do is gripe and complain about literally everything, I’m out. No thank you. Why is your hobby being angry? Take up knitting or something for christ’s sake.
Section 4 – Habits
What is something you do every day without fail? Baby talk the dog and snuggle with Beebs.
What is your typical breakfast? I’m a leftovers for breakfast kinda gal but lately I’ve been having a bagel and watermelon.
Which article of clothing do you like to wear the most? I loooove me a good baggy T-shirt and booty shorts.
Is there a TV show you watch habitually? We’re currently watching Unhhhh while we eat dinner every night, haha!
Where do you usually spend most of your day? I really only sit in 4 places--bed, the couch, my makeup/work desk, or my sewing desk. Depends on the day which one I’m at.
Is there a product that you do not want to run out of? Moisturizer. I’m a dry son of a bitch.
What is your preferred mode of transport? Car!
Do you usually have something playing in the background when you're home? Nah. I’m in silence a lot of the time.
Where do you usually get your groceries? Walmart for the bulk of it, a local grocery store for the specialty items, and Target if we ever run out of something midweek because I cannot handle Walmart more than once a week.
How often do you go to your local park? Like once or twice a month in the summer!
Which of your hobbies do you indulge in most often? Sewing and Sims currently!
Section 5 – Favourites and dislikes
What is your favourite fruit? Watermelon!
How about your favourite berry? Strawberries are the only berry I like.
Which food do you highly dislike? Fish. It’s all disgusting.
What is your favourite song, and why? I hate this question. Who can pick one definitive favorite song out of the bajillions of songs that have been written??
What is a movie you cannot stand? Anything with Seth Rogen in it, any movie that's got a 3+ after it (looking @ you, Fast & Furious), and all the fuckin’ superhero movies that have the same ‘ah yes, this undefeatable bad guy that we have absolutely no chance against and will undoubtedly kill us all--but we’re going to pull through at the last second with the power of friendship!’ plot line.
Which trait in a person do you find most appealing? I don’t know how to describe it--certain people just have that spark and you can always tell right away if they’ve got it or not and those are my favorite kind of people.
Which trait puts you instantly off? If they’re religious it’s an instant no from me, dog.
Who is an actor/actress who you dislike so much you can't watch them? I really, really dislike Tom Holland. I honestly think he’s a terrible actor.
What colour are your favourite shoes? White!
What is a smell that disgusts you to no end? B.O., on me or others. I just can’t deal with it.
Which door handle/door knob do you like the most in your home? They’re all the same.
Section 6 – Culture
What is something very typical to the culture of your home country? Apple pie and baseball are the only things coming to mind atm.
Do you enjoy art? If so, which form of art is the most enjoyable? I do! But I prefer art that you can look at and know the artist is incredibly gifted and/or has put in a ton of time and effort to master their skills. None of that million dollar paint smear on a canvas shit.
What is something about another country's culture you don't understand? I feel like other cultures take their family and their family’s approval way too seriously. That might be rich coming from someone who doesn’t have a very good relationship with their family but I just don’t understand what the point of making yourself miserable to make your family happy is.
Do you ever attend the theater? If so, which play did you see last? Last thing I saw in a theater was Shangela perform a drag show, haha!
How about the opera or the ballet? Nope.
Which dance troupe do you enjoy, if any? ...they still do that?
Do you attend concerts or gigs? If so, which band did you see last? Not as much as I’d like to as no one good really comes here very often. Last band we saw was X Ambassadors and Paramore!
Are you interested in foreign food? I’m not uninterested but I’m not super interested either.
If so, which country's cuisine do you enjoy the most? Chinese...albiet probably a very Americanized version of Chinese.
Do you enjoy stand-up comedy? If so, who is your favourite comic? I doooo! Bo Burnham and Drew Lynch are my favorites.
Do you contribute to culture in some way? If so, how? I try to? I’m an influencer so I definitely have a platform of a couple hundred thousand people. Not sure what exactly I contribute tho.
Section 7 – Charity
Do you volunteer your time to anything charitable? If so, what? Newp.
Do you donate money to any charities? If so, which ones? No. I don’t trust a lot of charities, to be quite honest. A lot of them are very shady and I’d rather donate money directly to someone who needed it rather than it getting tied up in a charity where it might never actually see the people they claim to be helping.
If you have pets, are any of them rescues from shelters? We adopted our dog from one of my husband’s coworkers but she probably would have gone to the shelter if we didn’t take her.
Do you donate your old clothes, linen etc. to charitable organizations? Yes! We almost always have a bag of donations in our trunk that we always forget to take to the thrift store when we go.
If someone you know is in need, is it in your nature to offer help? If I can, yes!
Have you ever donated Christmas presents to children of poor families? We used to do that when I was a kid.
Have you ever had to rely on other people's charity? One Christmas when I was really young I remember my parents signed up for a sponsorship through the Salvation Army where a family adopted us and bought us Christmas presents and Christmas dinner or whatever.
How do you feel about donating to charities endorsed by celebrities? I would never donate to a charity simply because it was sponsored by a celebrity but I guess its the easiest way for a charity to get the word out that they need donations.
Is there a charity you absolutely never ever will not trust? PETA, Salvation Army, Goodwill, and that breast cancer one with the horrible CEO.
Have you ever donated to a cause that had a person going door to door? No. I extra wouldn’t if someone came knocking on my door asking for money.
In general, what is your opinion on charity? I already did my rant about them, haha.
Section 8 – Entertainment
Which was the very first video game you remember playing? Ocarina of Time I believe!
Which was the very first film you remember watching? That I don’t remember. Maybe that Barney movie with the magic egg?
What is your go-to form of entertainment? TikTok usually.
Do you have a large collection of DVDs/Blu-Rays? Nah. We have a drawer but we usually stream everything.
How about music albums? Beebs collects vinyls!
Do you prefer to have your music on vinyls, tapes, CDs or digital? I prefer digital and Beebs likes vinyl.
When and where do you like to entertain yourself usually? Either the bed or the couch.
Do you ever binge watch shows? If so, what are you binging now? Usually! I’m sadly in between shows rn.
What kinds of books do you like to read, if any? I honestly don’t read anymore.
Is there a book series you're currently collecting? ..
Is entertainment something you prefer to enjoy alone or with someone else? I have my shows and then we have shows we watch together. So there’s a time and place for both!
Section 9 – Internet
Do you always have access to the Internet, wherever you go? If not, why? Yup!
Which website do you frequent the most? Website website? Google. App website? Instagram or TikTok.
Which search engine do you prefer and trust the most? Googs.
What do you use the Internet the most for? Social media or entertainment.
Do you judge people who have their phones out all the time? If so, why? Random people? None of my business. But if we’re spending time together and I’m trying to have a conversation with you and you're not paying attention to me because your nose is glued to your phone, I’m gonna be pissed.
If your connection goes down, what do you do? Go do something that’s not on the internet?
Is there something you wish you could do online that isn't possible yet? I still wish you could smell things through the internet.
Do you remember the first time you used the Internet? When was it? Yes! I believe the 2nd/3rd grade?
What was a website you used to frequent that doesn't exist anymore? I loved the Disney website with all the games.
Do/Did you ever have your own website? That was the thiiiing back in the day.
Isn't it great how much knowledge and info we have at our fingertips? It’s great but also overwhelming.
Section 10 – And finally...
What is something you consider to be highly controversial? Politics, apparently.
What kinds of jokes do you like the best? I love a good pun.
Is there a person who makes you laugh effortlessly? Oh definitely.
Which part of your body do you like the least? My eyes.
What's something random, out of context you remember from your past? I don’t do well with really vague questions.
Do you wear shoes indoors? No, I’m not a heathen.
What's the silliest thing you've worn on your body in public? I don’t think I usually wear silly things.
What's the most important thing in your life right now? Just spending time with my fam. Trying to get over this anxiety.
What is the most distant point on the planet that you've been from home? Florida.
Do you enjoy trivia games? If so, which one's your favourite? We love some Trivial Pursuit in this house!
Are you more logical or emotional? My emotions take over and then my logic brings it back in. Equal parts, baby.

1. The most beautiful place you have been
Oh I think any place I’ve been has it’s own unique beauty, and I saw so many beautiful things in Europe it’s hard for me to pick. The Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence, The Grand Canyon...Objectively though, probably Hawaii:
Tumblr media
this is a beach on Oahu called Bellows which has great waves for surfing. My grandparents made fun of me and my cousin for getting wiped out, but we conquered and lived another day!
I actually like any place with water, this is a place near(ish) where I live:
Tumblr media
texas hill country really is quite beautiful.
2. Pick a super power. Why that one?
teleportation. I dislike driving and it would be so convenient to get to all the places I want to go to. (Which is everywhere. I love travel.)
3. Do you have a comfort movie or show? What is it?
Several. I love old movies and oftentimes will put one on for some comfort if I’m working on some writing for background noise. Sound of Music, that Hamilton woman, Bette Davis films/Vivien Leigh films...lot of stuff. I watch the thorn birds once a year and put on Charmed (don’t judge) when I’m bored and cleaning, lol.
4. A creation you’re really proud of?
My fics Our Immortal Longings, In Waking Dreams, and my ten minute play I wrote/directed in college. Also all the papers I wrote for my Shakespeare classes.
5. Something you are looking forward to in the next year or two?
You know if the love of my life walked into my life I would really like that! beyond that though, my family and I plan on moving from the house we currently reside, which is the house I’ve always lived in, but I’m just excited for something new with no bad energy. Traveling more, working out more and hopefully getting more toned, starting a novel, lots of stuff.
6. Top 5 video games?
Red Dead Redemption 2, Dragon Age Origins, Resident Evil 4, Kingdom Hearts (first one.) Skyrim. I picked games that I both played a lot, impacted me, and just ones that I got the most joy out of through my life. though of course I love others!
7. A recent favorite anything (food/entertainment/clothing/??)
Cheyenne’s popcorn recipe: pop your popcorn in olive oil. Get some balsamic drizzle and drizzle on the popcorn. Get kraft Parmesan cheese and coat that popcorn in cheese. bad for you? hell yeah. good snack food? fuck yes.
also I realize this is old but I love the modern renaissance palette by anastasia. I was like “eh” about the red colors but I fell in love.
8. Favorite board game?
honestly not too much of a board game fan. Would like to play Risk though.
9. Stealing this one: I know that lots of people have “dinosaur” or “ancient Egypt” interests as a child; what was something that you were super interested in as a child? I’d love to learn a new fact about that subject if you’re willing!
at around 7 I had a dinosaur phase where I would check out all sorts of books from the library and ask my mom to read them to me. Around the same time I watched cleopatra with my grandma and had a Cleopatra phase...which I never really grew out of. 10 year old me was an Ancient Egypt nerd and my mom even gave me her cartouche she got as a gift from my grandma. (she went to egypt once on a business trip.)
I had a geisha phase at 13. My project on them actually won an award. I also had an Italian renaissance phase, a greek/norse mythology phase...I have always had a wide variety of interests.
10. A strange thing you googled recently, if you’re willing to share.
“death scene.” Some of you may know why :p

From chara-design to graphic design: the artists behind Capcom's 2D fighting game characters
Tumblr media
Capcom is a paradoxical company where illustrations were seen as a secondary part of the designers' job, made with the unavowed aim to attract aspiring designers. But the truth is that if you have never designed a cover art or a flyer illustration, chances are the public doesn't know who you are, even if you have designed or animated some of the most famous characters ever created. I wrote the following article with the intent to give proper credits to some of these famous unknown artists.
In Capcom's early years, there was a hierarchy which implied that newly hired graphic designers were assigned to work on backgrounds, then on characters after gaining some experience, and eventually could become planner (≈ director / game designer), but a planner could also design graphics. In a way, designers were specialized in a certain field of activity, but a designer could create illustrations, design graphics and logos for the same game. Such was the case with Satoru Yamashita on Ghosts'n Goblins (1985), Koichi Yostui on Strider (1989) who also directed the game and Akira Yasuda (AKA Akiman) on Side Arms (1986) although he only drafted the logo.
Speaking of Akiman, when he joined Capcom, he wasn't assigned on a game but was asked to draw backgrounds for practicing pixel art, which he did for 3 months. During the development of Side Arms, he was tasked to create backgrounds but he also volunteered to design mechas. A few years later, he animated Chun-Li from Street Fighter II in less than 2 months while his colleagues spent about 10 months on each character. It's probably around that time that he started putting his hands on almost everything art related at Capcom, creating drafts for some characters and designing or modifying frames for characters handled by other people.
Nevertheless, as in the whole industry, the artists who worked at Capcom became more and more specialized. Kinu Nishimura joined Capcom in 1991 and did very little graphic design during her career. Her first work consisted of animating Lucky Colt from Muscle Bomber, then she spent most of her time at Capcom designing characters and creating illustrations. Akiman was an exception, still doing graphic design in 1998, 13 years after joining Capcom, although he was managing the design team while creating illustrations. He once said that his main contribution to Capcom was not the illustrations he designed but what he brought to character animation (he worked briefly in an animation studio before joining Capcom). When the development of the first Vampire / Darkstalkers started, he tried to train new character designers by tasking about 10 graphic designers to create concept art during 3 whole months. While this exercice led to the creation of the characters we all know, it seems that the designers thought it was too long and wanted to go back to graphic design. Regarding background design, it was no longer a rookie job in the 90s. I haven't been able to find a lot of information about how the background team worked but its leader was Yoko Fukumoto / 福本 容子.
When you’re working on a developper’s profile, many problems occur. The first one is the use of one or many pseudonyms, be it volontary or not. The second one is that staff rolls rarely detail who did what. The third one is related to Capcom's policy. As pointed out by Akiman, staff rolls in Capcom's games were often incomplete due to the fact that the direction thought there were too many names in them. Akiman's name doesn't appear in many of the games he worked on (including the first Vampire/Darkstalkers for which he supervised animation and graphics, provided concept art and drew some key animations) but he wasn't the only victim of that phenomenom. It's not related to graphic or character design but the ending credits from Final Fight mention only 2 composers while the Original Sound Collection (released in 2014) lists 7 people.
The character designer wasn't necessarily the same person as the one who animated that character ─the graphic designer. Occasionally, the design of a character was modified by its graphic designer when he was animating it. For example, Chun-Li had pants in her original design but Akiman chose to remove it and to change her shoes during the animation phase. Sometimes, many artists were working (or were tasked to work) on the same idea, creating designs with the same concept in mind. The people credited as character designers are the ones who created the final designs. It seems that sometimes around 1994-95, due to the fact that the characters were more and more detailed and complex to animate, it became rare to have only one artist on a given character. If you take a look at the staff roll from Marvel Super Heroes ─which is notable for having detailed credits─, you can see that 3 of the 4 characters from X-Men COTA were animated by only one artist each (assuming everybody was properly credited), while the newcomers were handled by 3 to 13 staff members.
As Disney did decades ago with some of its movies, Capcom reused some of the animations originally created for Street Fighter II when developing Street Fighter Zero in order to reduce the production costs. It was confirmed by Akiman and it's even harder to give proper credit when this happens.
Tumblr media
On a related note, when asked which materials an aspiring graphic designer should study, Yoshinori Yamamoto (animator on many Capcom crossover games from the late 90s) said that it was recommended to watch old Disney movies frame by frame rather than Japanese animes.
When Akiman joined Capcom in 1985, the company was already equipped with SMC-70 custom computers. SMC was a line of computers produced by Sony and designed for professional video applications but used by some video game companies such as Capcom, Namco and SNK at the time. While the SMC had its own graphic tool, Capcom developed its own: TCE (Tiny Character Editor).
Tumblr media
Koichi Yotsui: "You had a 16 pixel grid, a 16-color palette, and that was it"
The Graphic designers used a keyboard to design sprites and backgrounds and many of them kept using that tool when mice became widely available (Akiman thought a keyboard was handier for pixel art and still used it when he made the Opening from Vampire), which was the case when Capcom switched from the SMC-70 custom to the A-CAT X68000 during the development of Street Fighter II ─the X68000 was bundled with a mouse. A few developers mention that Capcom also used joysticks to design graphics in the early 90s which is very plausible. I think many companies didn't have a policy regarding which tool(s) their employees should use to design graphics.
When Akiman started designing sprites for Side Arms and Forgotten Worlds (which became the first CPS1 game, although its development started before Daimakaimura / Ghouls'n Ghosts), he complained that the pixels weren't square, to which he was answered that it was impossible since the engineers had been asked to make square pixels. He eventually learned that it was due to a calculation error from the hardware team, which explains why the CPS systems have such an odd resolution (384x224). This also explains why he used a custom grid paper made of vertical rectangles when he designed key frames (otherwise his drawings would be stretched once scanned and displayed on screen).
Tumblr media
As with other video game companies, many graphic designers had a CRT on their desk to get a preview of the graphics they were working on.
Graphic designers had more freedom than nowadays during the creation of a character. According to Takenori Kimoto, they had to complete the animation part 3 months before the end of development, but when he animated Anakaris from Vampire, he could design moves by himself and thus having an influence on the fighting style of the character. He handed many animations to the programmers who then had to decide what to do with each move (some of these animations remain unused). Eri Nakamura mentioned that the only instruction she had been given for Honda’s headbutt was the name of the special move (”Super Headbutt”). Note that the graphic designers from SNK had a similar influence on the games they worked on. "The in-between frames of animation were largely left to the designer’s intuitions, recalls Naoto Abe, designer on Savage Reign, so there may have been some ridiculously over-powered characters as a result."
PS: This is a WIP. If I find anything else, I'll add it to this post
PPS: Before he left Capcom to found Arika, Street Fighter II director Akira Nishitani worked on a few projects that didn't see the light of day. One of them was a 3D fighting game which evolved into what we know as Warzard. Street Fighter III was meant to be the first CPS III game and Akiman's aim was to improve the quality of 2D graphics, but during the development of this long awaited sequel, 3D fighting games became a big thing and a lot of players were waiting for Capcom's answer to Virtua Fighter and Tekken. Akira Nishitani recently revealed that he did some experiments with 3D characters on Warzard, then switched to 2D. He left Capcom shortly after with some of his colleagues to found Arika whose first game was non other than Street Fighter EX. more concept art and line art: https://flyers.arcade-museum.com/?page=archive&db=videodb&name=secret+file&year=&manu=10&source=&submit=Search+the+Archive And if you want to read more about graphic design in Japan: https://vgdensetsu.tumblr.com/post/179656817318/designing-2d-graphics-in-the-japanese-industry
Street Fighter / ストリートファイター (1987)
The first Street Fighter was directed by Takashi Nishiyama, then head of Capcom's development team 2. He was headhunted by SNK after the release of the game and left the company with many members of the development team. One of them was Koichi Sakita / 崎田 浩一, described as Street Fighter I main artist by KOF XIV producer Yasuyuki Oda (who was graphic designer during the Neo-Geo era). Sakita later worked on Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, etc.

As mentioned earlier, Capcom games' staff rolls weren't exhaustive but it seems that some of the developers of Street Fighter were allowed to inscribe their first name in the credits. One of Keiji Inafune’s very first works at Capcom was designing Adon’s portraits from Street Fighter. His name doesn’t appear in the credits though.

Anita / アニタ graphic design: ?????????????????? Why Anita was in Marvel Super Heroes? During the second half of X-Men COTA’s development, Akira Nishitani asked the programmers to add something else. Thus was added Akuma to the cast. One of those programmers -Tarabar- wanted to do something similar with Marvel Super Heroes but there was little remaining space in the ROM so he went to see various graphic designers to collect data and decided to add Anita, a non-playable character featured in Vampire Hunter alongside with Donovan. Tarabar asked the graphic designer to add some moves. He left Capcom before the end of the development but he wanted to be able to play Anita in any arcade center, even though he didn't do any balancing or bug check on the character. He added 3 secret commands to let him play Anita and gave them to 3 different developers. Each developer was handed one secret command so that if there was a leak Tarabar would know who it came from. It leaked from the 3 of them. He was worried about Marvel's reaction but never heard anything about that. The special move "Love for you" is a reference to a song from Wedding Peach, an animated series based on a manga. This reference was kept in Puzzle Fighter.

2d headcanon thingy
I had this headcanon in my mind on 2d for a while now and im JUST now getting around to posting this! but here it is!!
=> 2-d has a seething dislike for watching Disney princess movies
=> he has never watched ANY Disney princess movie or any of the sequels and the rest of the gang are surprised at this. so when noodle heard of moana she wanted to go see it on the big screen and 2d was the only one that didn't want to go.
=> he always hated the "damsel in distress is actually  lost princess or is only interesting if she is a cookie cutter generic love interest for a random prince." the gang tried to get him to sit down through snow white and 2d LOST HIS SHIT when the prince climbed over the wall and sings with snow white like " holy shit this stranger is nosy as fuck! and hello breaking into a castle?!! how bout knocking next time!?" and he got super mad when the queen ordered the huntsman to kill snow white like" GOSH bitch! here we go with the wicked queen being a total salty prick to snow all cause snow white got it all!?" but snow whites 'death scene' only made him tear up cause grumpy was crying. like " hey mudz if I die would you cry?"
=> noodle and russel try to tell him that most recent Disney princess movies are more relatable now. but no matter how hard the gang try, they cant get 2d to freakn sing along to the princess songs!! murdoc tried to get him to watch mulan with him and ace and 2d will only watch it for the animation " LoOK AT THE Hair swoosh@!!" he was really starting to dig it and dramatically gasped during the reveal of mulan as a women. *gasps and grabs murdoc* " holly moaly mudz can you believe it!!??" like his heart stopped when shane saw her bandaged chest! 2d was scared shitless when they left her in the snow.
=> He has seen every other Disney movie aside from the Disney princess movies which he tries to avoid like the plague. but they were finally able to get him to sit and finish a whole movie that had a princess in it. BRAVE was the one he watched all the way through. he actually liked the "rebellious phase" that merida had but he LOVED the mother daughter bond and how chill the dad was.
=> so far he has watched princess and the frog, Mulan, Moana , Aladdin and Brave. In the very beginning he had NO fav Disney princess, and yeah he still doesn't, but now he doesn't mind the Disney princess movies. Heck! he will even go back and watch ones like Cinderella, sleeping beauty, and snow white because of the music and title cards.
=> 2d and murdoc are OLD MEN so theres gotta be subtitles for them on screen
=> russel's fav Disney princess is Belle, noodles fav is Ariel, Ace like jasmine the best and murdocs fav is Cinderella and 2d hasn't found a fav yet.

Series Review: Read or Die (R.O.D. the OVA)
Welcome to another episode of Paul is Weeaboo Trash! Today’s topic is a show I’ve previously seen one episode of, so long ago that I’m almost going in fresh: the OVA (what we in the US would call a “direct to video release”) of Read or Die (2001–2002)! I was lucky enough to grow up in a household where education and fun were not portrayed as opposites, and we had the means to find plenty of fun educational things to do.  My parents searched for all kinds of potentially interesting activities, and living in southern New Hampshire, the Boston area was not prohibitively far to go for them.  And so I was signed up for Splash, a program one weekend per fall in which MIT students teach middle- and high-school-age kids seminars on a wide variety of topics.
What counted as topics worthy of education was quite broad, however.  I ended up in a "class" that consisted of watching one episode each of several anime that the student running the class was a fan of.  This was back in the days where anime fandom spread person-to-person by recommendations and there was more emphasis on developing a background knowledge of "classics" among the more informed and/or snootier fans.  (I still feel this way a bit because certain tropes and references are so common or influential that being familiar with the original sources can make newer shows suddenly make a lot more sense, but I disapprove of the gatekeeper tendency to look down on people who don't yet know the things "everyone knows".)
I don't remember how many shows we sampled there, but the two that made an impact were Hellsing, which in retrospect was at best questionable for the age of the audience, and was very much not my thing because I have a low tolerance for gore, and the topic of this post, Read or Die, which was very much the kind of thing I wanted to see: a nerd being a badass in a fantastical way.  Especially since I was also really into James Bond at the time, so I was probably primed to eat up other media involving a British spy fighting a mysterious secret organization.  Since I'm incredibly averse to media piracy and had no clue where to buy anime, though, I never followed up to finish watching it, and eventually it faded from my mind.  Until I stumbled across the first volume of the manga for super-cheap at Saboten Con last year, and it flicked some nostalgia switch that reminded me how much I'd enjoyed it at the time, although I barely remember any actual details, so I am practically going in fresh here.
Read or Die follows Yomiko Readman, a teacher, obsessive book collector and reader, and superpowered secret agent who can manipulate paper in nearly any way.  Any paper available, from money to ribbons to a briefcase full of blank looseleaf she apparently just brings with her.  She uses this power in the course of her service as a secret agent, codename The Paper, working for the British Library?!  Along with Miss Deep, who can selectively phase shift, and Drake Anderson, a gruff and dismissive military type (and apparently potter in his cover job), she is assigned to a plan to save the world in a way that vaguely involves collecting books.  Saved from whom?  The I-jin, clones of historical geniuses with superpowers related to their areas of expertise, such as... knowing stuff about insects, or... uh... spreading Buddhism to Japan... who are going to flashy and violent lengths to steal books the British Library is trying to acquire legitimately.  Trust me, it eventually gets explained, and the Big Reveal, although pretty goddamn weird, fits in with the rest of what has been established.  Suspend your disbelief enough to accept the I-jin at all, and it’s fine, although still a bit ludicrous.
And I submit that all that is still less weird and ridiculous than your typical superhero or spy movie, and this show does after all have elements of both genres in one.  Or, well, more and more superhero and military action as it goes on.  Although the theme music uses 60s guitar sounds, chromatic chord changes, and blaring brass hits that are virtually guaranteed to evoke the James Bond theme, and our main cast do work for a secret intelligence agency, they are in quite open military-style conflict with the I-jin -- with the approval of the UN -- and very little that’s actually covert occurs, with the notable exception of something I can’t spoil that happens at the end of ep. 2.  And because of the superpower angle, some of the instances of weirdness are not flaws at all but pretty creative implementations of the characters’ powers (using a paper airplane as a lethal weapon?!).
This last point didn’t really fit in organically, but I'd also like to mention a couple of things about the art that I love but don't see often.  The very first shot of the series uses multiple flat backgrounds at different distances moving in relation to each other to convey the camera moving across the scene, which I have seen in other animated works (at the moment, I can only think of examples from very old Disney movies off the top of my head), but not in recent ones.  I don't know whether it's simply out-of-fashion or this is a result of the shift to CGI so animators figure "why would we do this when we can actually render a city with realistic perspective?"  This show also has a particular kind of fluid motion in characters that I’ve seen in many reasonably-high-production-value shows from the 90s and 00s, but rarely in newer shows (Space Dandy being a notable exception).  Maybe I'm watching the wrong recent shows, maybe it's just a stylistic choice that's out of fashion, maybe it's harder to pull off convincingly when you're not animating by hand.
I’m glad I finally got to watch this.  It’s even better than I remember.  Now to get to work on the rest of the manga and the other series.  Oh yeah, haha.  The abbreviation "R.O.D." stands for both "Read or Die" and "Read or Dream", which are different parts of the same larger series.  The Read or Die manga (4 volumes), this OVA series, the Read or Dream manga (also 4 volumes), and a 26-episode TV series all take place in the same narrative universe, rather than the usual model of the anime being an adaptation/retelling of the manga.  There is also a light novel series I know nothing about, but it sounds from the Wikipedia article like that is the single ongoing series that is the source for the two manga and two anime.  (There is also apparently a barely-related future side story manga.)
-----
W/A/S: 1/3/3
Weeb: I don’t think there’s much, if anything, in here that would require explanation to a typical Western audience and which isn’t also explained in the dialogue.
Ass: There is a single implied nipple in the opening sequence.  Gasp!  And Miss Deep's costume design is pretty fanservicey, but only barely more explicitly so than you're likely to get in American media deemed suitable for older children.
Shit: Until the Big Reveal, it's just unclear why anyone involved other than Yomiko should be this interested in acquiring the specific books that serve as the show’s MacGuffin, nor is it clear that the I-jin’s plans extend further than searching for them in a very destructive way, leaving me baffled that the Library immediately makes the connection that the books are key to saving the world.  There are a few minor errors in the subtitles and a visual glitch (Blu Ray remaster, please?), and a couple of places where faces just... don’t... look right.  Oh, and if you’re watching the dubbed version, add another half point of Shit for Crispin Freeman’s British accent.
And for the first time I feel the need to add a CONTENT WARNING.  Usually, I think the review is sufficient to give you the idea whether there is anything likely to be disturbing in a show, but this is different, because the first two episodes have the sort of over-the-top stylized combat you might expect from other action anime or Western superhero media, where even a death comes off as un-shocking.  But in ep. 3 of this, there is a shocking pivot.  There are several short instances of graphic and sudden violence of kinds that are quite a bit more disturbing and distressing (even when they involve the use of powers) than anything that occurred previously.
-----
Stray Observations:
- Yes, those of you who know a little Japanese caught that joke: "Yomiko" could be loosely translated as "read girl".  Her name is "Read Girl Read Man".  Because she likes to read.  Get it?  Ha!  Ha!  Ha!
- In the manga, Yomiko is also established to be a literal bibliophile.  As in "books, regardless of content, turn her on".  I'm kind of glad this is not a plot point in the anime.
- The “secret” operation in the last episode, which is conducted with UN approval and involves an actual military attack with an actual goddamn naval fleet (and collaborating with North Korea to keep the US too distracted to notice it, even though this is a British operation against an organization that literally burned down the White House in the first scene of the first episode) might actually beat the first few episodes of Full Metal Panic! for “worst undercover operation ever”.

MIKE HANLON - KIDCOT STATION AT THE CANADA PAVILION, EPCOT CENTER THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8TH 6:55 P.M.
There were two hours and five minutes until the Epcot fireworks show began, signalling the imminent close of the park, which meant there were three hours and five minutes until Mike Hanlon could finally clock out.
Not that he was counting, of course.
Sighing, he shifted in his seat at the Canada KidCot station. He’d been scheduled for an afternoon 8 hour shift, 11 to 7, but they’d asked for someone to extend because they were short-staffed and he apparently couldn’t help himself. He agreed to work until close, which was an extra three hours. Normally, he wouldn’t be phased by that, but he was bone tired today. He’d been up late with his Imagineer roommate, poring over plans and ideas for Star Wars.
He should have known better. No amount of arguing for Lando Calrissian or Finn was going to make Bob Iger, the CEO of the company, less racist, which meant that there was little to no hope for representation in the new Star Wars World. His roommate Ben had tried to warn him, but he’d pushed the issue anyway, feeling restless and irritated that he worked for a company that didn’t value people like him.
Now, he was paying the price. He stifled a yawn as a mother with two children hustled them by his table - he would kill for someone to actually talk to, but he wasn’t the type to hustle people over to him Gaston-style. (The Magic Kingdom Gaston was notorious for cat-calling girls, which Mike supposed was in character...but it was deeply unsettling to watch.)
Sighing, Mike picked up a marker and began to color one of the Duffy* drawings at his station. As bored as he was, he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Disney, for all its flaws, was more of a home for him than Canada had ever been, and KidCot was his favorite rotation. He loved telling stories and teaching kids about his home country - he loved teaching.
He loved Canada, too...it was his home, after all, but it had never been freeing for him like Florida had. Home came with expectations - from his peers, from his teachers, and most of all, from his parents.
Mike loved his parents, but he was definitely not the son they needed. He had no interest in hanging around and taking over the farm. His dreams were bigger than that.
His parents, for their part, had totally supported his move...at their own expense. He felt guilty about that sometimes, but he had a feeling that all three of them knew, in their hearts, that it was the right choice for Mike to go.
He’d come to Disney World because he hadn’t known where else to go. Disney had a work program for international students that promised to give him opportunities to connect with people around the world, and that promise had really appealed to 21 year-old Mike Hanlon. It had been the right choice, definitely - his first three months at Star Tours had been like a dream. He got to talk Star Wars all day, he got to choose Rebel Spies**, the ride wasn’t that complicated, and he hadn’t had to slog all the way around the perimeter of Hollywood Studios to get to his attraction like the Tower of Terror bellhops did. (There had to be a more efficient way of moving around backstage, and someday, Mike imagined they’d invent it, but for the time being, it was long walks and bikes over at Studios.) All in all, it had been a perfect fit for him.
Then, he had three months doing outdoor vending (ODV) at Studios, and that was...less exciting, to say the least. ODV was hot, sweaty work, and the guests that wanted popcorn or pretzels or light-up Mickey ears were usually tired, hungry, and cranky (and sometimes racist). Still, that was manageable, especially when he got into the groove of Fantasmic shifts. In fact, he still picked up Fantasmic shifts from time to time, for nostalgia’s sake.
After that, his program was over, but he didn’t feel ready to do something else, so he went to Casting to see about applying for a more regular job (and what he would have to do to renew his US work visa). The only full-time position they had to offer him was in the Canada Pavilion, so that’s where he was for the time being. It wasn’t ideal (he was putting in to transfer back to attractions as soon as he was able), but he’d gotten that temporary worker visa for it, so he had no choice but to make it work. So far, the only thing that had been completely ruined for him was Martin Short movies, because after watching the Martin Short ‘O Canada’ film a thousand and twelve times per work shift, he’d sooner die than watch Three Amigos ever again in his life. (He considered himself extremely lucky to have found the roommate that he did via the CM Housing Facebook page, but if Ben put on Father of the Bride one more time, Mike was going to kick him out immediately and permanently.)
Mike finished coloring his Duffy and looked around. There were no kids anywhere in sight. It was around dinner time, and the Canada pavilion wasn’t a highly popular family destination to begin with, so Mike was going to be alone for a long while, people-watching as young hipster couples walked by with Disney shopping bags full of maple syrup and plaid clothes.
He was so zoned out, he almost missed the two attractive men that were walking out of a shop and towards him.
Now, Mike had spent quite a bit of time coming to terms with his sexual identity. His father extremely traditional - which was not to say close-minded, but there was just no opportunity for exploration on the farm. It wouldn’t have made sense.
Disney was on the extreme opposite end of that spectrum. A huge percentage of male Cast Members were gay, and for the first time, Mike had the opportunity to consider his own feelings.
As it turned out, he was pretty equally interested in men and women. He’d had a couple of short relationships during his time in the States with people of both genders, and they’d all been pretty nice...just, not lasting, and none of the people he had dated had been as compelling as the two men - a redhead and a boy with light brown curls, he could see now - that were walking his way.
It was a bit disconcerting, actually. Mike usually wasn’t attracted to white people (they were so entitled and pasty), but there was something almost cosmic about these two. It felt like the universe calling.
Before they got close enough to see him, Light Brown Curls stopped and turned to the redhead, holding up a Disney bag and smirking. The redhead blushed and grabbed for the bag, but Curls swiftly moved it behind his back. They began to engage in a game of keep-away. Mike was mesmerized.
“You trying to stamp their passports?” Mike jumped at the sound of a leering female voice, and almost fell out of his chair. “If you know what I mean?”
“Ma’am, I---” he began, turning to look at the perpetrator and stopping short when he saw her pretty green eyes. “Huh?”
She laughed prettily. “The ginger making an idiot of himself is named Bill. He works Guest Relations over at MK, and he’s been super hung up on these two guys he saw in passing in the Boardwalk slash Epcot area recently. Classic pining gay.”
Mike looked back over at the two men. The ginger (Bill) had retrieved his bag, and was waving it in front of Curls’ face. Curls seemed unimpressed.
“Is the skinny brunette boy one of the guys Bill was pining over?” Mike guessed, watching the bounce of the haughty man’s curls.
“Yep,” said the girl, joining Mike in looking over. “His name’s Stan, apparently. He’s a front desk coordinator over at Yacht, because of course he is. Everyone at Yacht is so fucking put together. Pardon my French.”
“It’s a relief to hear cursing every once in a while,” Mike admitted. “It can’t be princesses and rainbows all the time.”
The girl nodded appreciatively. “I like your style. I’m Beverly. I work in costuming over at MK.”
“Oh, word.” Mike stuck out a hand for her to shake. She took it, and he was immediately impressed by the subtle strength in her grip. “I’m Mike. You wanna learn about Canada?”
“At some point,” Beverly said, smiling amusedly. “Right now, though, I’m trying to play matchmaker.”
Mike squinted at her, confused. “Aren’t your friends already together, though? I thought you were just third-wheeling.”
“Fourth-wheeling, if all goes to plan.” Beverly waggled her eyebrows. “Weren’t you wondering who else Bill has a crush on around here? I did say that he was pining over two guys.”
Mike’s stomach lurched. Pretty boys weren’t generally in the business of looking Mike Hanlon’s way...unless he was reading the whole thing wrong?
“No, but there’s already...they’re already….” Mike protested weakly, hoping his assumptions were correct. “I couldn’t intrude.”
Beverly shrugged her freckled shoulders, looking down nonchalantly. “Two’s an arbitrary number, bud. You can do whatever you want.”
The boys’ eyes were on Mike, now - they must have noticed him talking to their friend. The redhead was smiling, and Mike suddenly felt hot.
Being with more than one person at a time had never occurred to Mike, but now that the idea had been planted, it was taking root in a really fast and embarrassing way.
“Bill, Stan,” Beverly called, beaming, “meet my new friend Mike. He’s from Canada.”
Feeling a little stupid, Mike gestured to his nametag. “Saskatchewan.”
“Mike from Saskatchewan.” Stan stepped forward, confident and smooth. “Very, very nice to meet you.”
Bill smiled knowingly. “Told you, didn’t I?”
“You were right,” Stan said, eyes never leaving Mike.
Mike looked between the two, hoping for an explanation, and Bill promptly provided him with one. “I saw you here the other day, talking to kids. You’ve got incredible charisma.”
Mike was painfully cognizant of the blood rushing to his cheeks. “Thanks. Uh. Bev says you guys are CMs, too?”
“Yep!” Bill tapped his chest where his name tag would be if he were in costume. “I’m in the Magic Kingdom, and Stan’s your neighbor over at the Yacht Club.”
“It’s a shame you don’t have any guests,” said Stan, examining the Duffy coloring pages at Mike’s table. “I don’t know why people aren’t flocking to you, honestly. You seem like the kind of person that I’d actually enjoy learning about Canada from.”
“Do you wanna hear some facts?” Mike asked, and then immediately cringed. Why couldn’t he say something compelling for once?
Fortunately, Bill and Stan seemed to find it endearing rather than weird. Stan opened his mouth to speak again…
...and was immediately interrupted by a freckly, frizzy-haired tornado of a human being, who swept in and slung his absurdly long arms over Bill and Stan’s shoulders. Mike blinked rapidly, trying to take stock of the situation, but before he could get his bearings, the new person adjusted his glasses and started speaking in a thick Russian accent.
“Eet eez veddy hahd, Comrade, for me to trahhck you eef you do not answer calls, da?” He was talking to Stan, but Bill seemed to recognize him, too, if his eye roll was any indication.
“Why the fuck did you need to find me at all?” Stan groaned. It was obvious that he was fond of this weird, lanky guy, but he was playing at irritation. “I turned off my phone for a reason, you nerd. Take a hint.”
“Eh, I was bored. Also kinda sad, thanks to Big Bill here.” The guy abruptly stopped with the accent, turned to Bill, and tutted loudly. “Can you believe that Bill stood in the way of true love today? Also, how the hell do you know Bill, Stanny?”
“We’ve literally just met,” Stan said, “and preventing you from feeling love is only serving to make him more attractive to me, so by all means, Bill, continue.”
“It’s not up to me,” Bill said sadly, “and tragically, Eddie does think he’s hot.”
The third guy inhaled sharply. “Hold on, say that last bit again.”
“Mike, this is Richie.” Bill ignored Richie’s request and turned to Mike. “He’s bad, sorry.”
Richie’s eyes flicked up to Mike for the first time. Mike sat awkwardly as Richie took him in, smiled, and said, “A fucking pleasure. Has anyone ever told you that red’s your color?”
“Just you,” Mike replied honestly.
“Glad I could be your first.” Richie winked, and Mike felt charmed in spite of himself.
“Okay, so how do we all know each other again?” Bev asked, frowning. “I know Rich because he’s a giant pain in my ass when he comes through costuming, I know Bill because I know Bill, and now I know Stan and Mike through Bill…”
“Richie’s my roommate,” Stan said flatly. “Unfortunately.”
Bill whipped around to stare accusingly at Richie. “You’ve been keeping that from me?”
“Hey, I didn’t know you were into stuck-up assholes,” Richie shrugged. “Besides, that’s justice in action for not giving Cute Character Attendant Eddie my number.”
“He was working,” Bill said defensively.
“He was working,” Richie parroted mockingly. “That’s never stopped me from hitting on him before, and it won’t stop me again.”
“I wouldn't,” Bill warned. “Eddie’s no joke.”
“Didn’t say he was,” Richie agreed, bouncing excitedly. “Did he actually say I was hot, though, because--”
“Where do you work, Richie?” Mike asked, trying to save Bill from the conversation.
Richie’s smile was huge and sweet. “The World Famous Jungle Cruise, of course! Why, you itchin’ to ride my bote?” His expression turned suggestive. “Because I’d let you. It’d be worth the long, painful death Stan and Bill would put me through--”
“Beep beep, Richie,” Bill said loudly, elbowing Richie hard in the gut. Richie doubled over on to the damp wood of the pavilion floor.
Stan quirked an eyebrow, obviously impressed. “Beep beep, huh? I’ll have to remember that for next time.” He brushed Bill’s arm with his hand as he said it, and the corner of Bill’s mouth twitched up. Mike was enamoured by the interaction, and wanted more than anything to be on the other side of the table, included in whatever it was they had going on…
...fuck, he was so fucking fucked.
“Richie, if you’re not here for any real reason, then you should come with me,” said Beverly, looking like she was already regretting her offer. “I was gonna ditch these three in a couple of minutes, anyway. Let ‘em have a Food and Wine date, or something.”
“You’re sweet, Bevvy.” Richie gave her a sappy look as he peeled himself off of the floor. “Askin’ me out. Adorable. Unfortunately, I’m gonna have to pass, because Bill, I’m not going anywhere until you promise to get me Cute Eddie’s number.”
“You’re really dedicated to that, huh?” Bill asked, tone halfway between ‘impressed’ and ‘alarmed’. “What the hell happened between you two to make you so frigging obsessed, Rich? Normally you’re all jokes and no follow-through.”
Richie tried to be nonchalant, but Mike could see a bit of red creeping up his neck under the collar of his shitty Toy Story t-shirt. He was silent for a moment, and then when he spoke, his voice was soft. “He’s just...I don’t….he’s all the stuff I like, you know?”
Mike looked at Bill, whose forehead was scrunched up in obvious concern at Richie’s words, and then at Stan, who had his hands delicately on his hips and was trying and failing to not seem affected, and understood that he, Mike Hanlon, knew exactly what Richie was talking about.
“Let’s talk more about this later,” Bill finally suggested after a long moment. “Okay?”
Richie nodded quietly. Something had happened in the last few minutes...it was like someone had toggled the Richie off-switch. Mike hoped it wasn’t something he had said. “Roger that, Billiam.”
“Hey,” Mike said, feeling suddenly bold in the wake of Richie’s vulnerability. “Listen. I can’t hang with you all now, because I won’t be off of work until 22:00. If you guys are free and still awake at that point, though, y’all can come to my place after I’m done. I can write down an address. I bet my roommate won’t mind.”
Bill’s responding smile could have lit up the whole park. “I’d love that.”
“Me too,” Stan said immediately, looking between Bill and Mike with a soft expression (well, soft for Stan the consummate professional, anyway).
“You want us there, too?” Richie asked cautiously.
Mike nodded, and was relieved to note that Stan and Bill were nodding too. “Dude, I could really use some friends. I’m fresh out of those.”
With that, the tension was broken. Richie let out a great howling laugh, and moved over to clap Mike on the back. “Oh, Mikey! You just hit the friend jackpot, my man. Just ask Stanley Uris! Richie Tozier’s a top notch amigo.”
Stan shrugged listlessly. “I mean, if you like people that try to give you sloppy handies every time they’re intoxicated.”
Richie’s expression twisted up, and for a split second, Mike thought he was gonna lose it, but then instead of yelling, Richie groaned. “They’re not sloppy, Stanley, Jesus Christ.”
“Jesus who?” Stan asked, reaching out to yank on Richie’s sleeve, which presumably was meant to signal that he was kidding. “Anyways, yes, the three of us will be there, Mike. Bev?”
“That depends,” she said slyly. “Is your roomie hot, Mikey?”
Mike couldn’t help but laugh at that. Ben was an objectively handsome man, but he was less sexy than he was warm and comforting. “He’s a beautiful, wonderful guy, Beverly.”
“Then of course,” she agreed, laughing her little laugh again. “Write your address on the back of one of these Duffys, yeah?”
Mike obliged her, and when he was done, Stan took the paper and folded it up neatly, ultimately placing it in the breast pocket of his shirt.
“All right,” Richie announced. “Parting is such sweet sorrow, Micycle, but we must go purchase overpriced cocktails now. Adieu.”
“Bye!” Bev called, and almost immediately, the two of them were off, merrily making their way to the main World Showcase walkway.
Stan and Bill lingered for another moment. They were both looking at Mike with expressions that made Mike feel like his stomach was going to explode with butterflies. He didn’t know what it was about these two that made him feel all of 17 again, but he wasn’t complaining. He hadn’t been this excited about romance since middle school.
“We’ll see you later, okay?” Stan said assuringly. He slid his hand into Bill’s after he spoke, and Mike watched their fingers entwine. Absurdly, he wasn’t jealous at all...any interaction at all between the three of them felt right and good.
“Have a nice couple of hours,” Mike said, trying to convey the giddiness he was feeling through his words. “Enjoy the fireworks!”
“It’ll be nicer when we’re all together,” Bill said meaningfully, and then he and Stan were disappearing into the throng, too.
It looked like it was going to be another late night for Mike Hanlon...but somehow, he didn’t think he was going to regret this one tomorrow.
One hour and three minutes until park close, two hours and three minutes until clock-out.
Notes:
we don't deserve Mike Hanlon
*Duffy is Mickey's teddy bear, apparently. He's very popular in Japan. You used to be able to go to a Duffy meet and greet in Epcot, which is fucking wild.
**There's a moment in the Star Tours ride where one guest on that particular simulator is identified as a "Rebel Spy". The cast members get to pick that guest. I have never been that guest, and I will be bitter about that until my dying day.

After getting all the sh*ts together:
Is writing a rest or a labor?
Just had a weird dream during my sleep in the afternoon after a long haul outside with multiple horrible mosquito bites on my limbs because of the lack of skin protection under such a dreadful and sweaty summer day following a devastating typhoon attack...and I’m out of preposition now. Woosh.
Back to the dream. But it’s super simple. The Queen (the British one) is dead and news are all over the world.
This is purely weird because first, never been to UK; and second, I really don’t care about that place just like I don’t care about recent news of their new PM. Another Trump-like guy SO FUCKING WHAT?
Which reminds me of Suits - a miraculous show in which the actress with LITT-erally(a stupid proof that I really watch this show instead of - well, not watch-watch it but only read some related stuff such as news or so) the crappiest actings got to be the fucking princess.
OMFG this is just so dystopianly fun.
Speaking of crappy actings - the actress with the crappiest actings in Game of Thrones is in the end betrayed by the actor with the crappiest actings. What an overestimated show.
I planned to accuse something grand at this moment, but I think the accusation itself is also too grand to handle, plus I’m a sucker for anniversary, so I’m just gonna save it for another day.
Speaking of anniversary, today happened to be the day of my first disastrous date last year. And now as I think of that, it just feels so hilarous.
One thing I’m certain, is that now I’m able to laugh at myself in last year, even by just look at my previous narcissistic posts on girls and such. Err.
But another thing I’m certain, is that I also accept it as part of my entire life.
- SO WHAT.
Currently I’ve got everything under control (hence the title), from work to after-work, which stablize me and also allow me to explore the next phase, including:
Game:
Because of my excellent experience on Tumblr a few years back, cannot wait for Animal Crossing next year. No Pokemon this time, or at least wait and see until its release.
Also Death Stranding is too addictive even only after watching the trailer - however I don’t own a PS4 and there’s no personal planning on buying it before next year so... another wait and see.
And Cyberpunk 2077. Really hope they can develop something decent this time, instead of another Witcher crap - sidebar: the Witcher fandom imo is just as moronic as GoT fandom, mostly consist of ppl who never read the original books and only care about sexual shits. Another reflection of my unwritten grand accusation.
And in case Cyberpunk aint that good -  the new Vampire Masquerade game. Darn it I can never forget the strange but wonderful experience when playing the Bloodline game decades ago (discontinued only because my English aint good enough back then). And there’s a sequel now. WOW.
TV:
I think I’ve spent more time on TV shows than on games actually. Damn it my guilty pleasure.
Quite a few shows I watched end this year. Game of Thrones w/ its shitty ending, The Big Bang Theory w/ its decent ending, Veep w/ its fabulous ending, Orange Is The New Black w/ its “Mad Men-ish” ending (which indicates that idk what’s going on but it looks good, opposite of shows that idk what’s going on but it looks meh, aka “Twin Peaks-ish” ending in my dictionary). Also those Marvel shows on Netflix - what a pity and fuck Disney as always.
A few months later Suits is gonna end as well, just hoping it can at least not suck as GoT.
For the endings of next year:
Modern Family, what a show.
Also Mr. Robot, WHAT A SHOW - I mean I don’t spend a full afternoon taking the Q line from Manhattan to Coney Island through Brooklyn and hanging around on the beach on my very first stay in NYC for fucking NOTHING!!!
New shows discovered this year so far:
The Umbrella Academy. The payback of my teen crush on MCR plus THAT cast similar to Beyond Two Souls is...wild as hell.
The Boys. I’m gonna call Superman Homelander from now on.
Watchmen. The reason why I love The Boys.
The revival of Veronica Mars - pisses a lot of romantic old fans, but I adore its new “True Detective-ish” style.
...and I’m gonna stop here and skip more shows on my watchlist.
Movie:
Not a big movie fan but...just watched the trailer of Joker today, and wow.
Music:
NORMAN FUCKING ROCKWELL - PERIOD
No explanation needed.
Anime:
Does Rick & Morty count? Not sure if it should be restrainted to only Japanese ones but nevermind...cause Chihayafuru is gonna make my anima cry toward euphoria.
So the post only means to be a list in the end.
Gotta have something to look forward to after all, right?
This list is also a reflection of myself in the purpose of the last thing that shall be listed:
A partner of opposite gender.
Yeah. Haven’t given up yet, although I can certainly believe that there’s probably gonna be NOBODY who’s able to synchronize with my preference - of what I’ve listed above.
I’ve got some standards for the other half, and it’s only after I begin to know what types are not my type. Cheers for the methodology of exclusion.
So statistically speaking, I should prepare myself into participating relevant events and let the probability do the rest of work.
And to end with a Breaking Bad style:
ALEA IACTA EST, BITCH.

A Start Up List of Working Latina Actresses who reasonably *could* play Henry Mills’ Love Interest and Lucy Mills’ Mother
So I saw a few people yesterday trying to come up with actresses who might play next year’s “Mystery Woman” (who I think we are all for the moment predicting will be Princess Elena of Avalor). Anyway, I meant to do this yesterday.... but life, you know?.... so here are Latina actresses in their late 20s/very early 30s who could reasonably audition for the role.
In general, I try to keep up with Latinx Hollywood, but still this list was harder than I thought! Most of the more well known working Latinas are too old for the role, the famous ones who are the right age are OBVIOUSLY WAY TO EXPENSIVE for Once (Selena, Demi, I’m looking at you!) or currently working in large, mainstream roles (Stephanie Beatriz, Aubrey Plaza, etc).
But here’s a starting list of roughly 10 or so potentials that I came up with, mostly former child stars looking for a “transition role”, a few from edgy streaming dramas who might be interested in the stability of a mainstream network paycheck, one who is so perfect I can’t imagine anything else now. I will put this out there, in case anyone is interested or curious...
Tumblr media
Naya Rivera- 30
So let’s get this out of the way right now, I (admit with shame) loved Glee. I love Naya and think she’s incredibly talented. I think Naya is the right age and looks a lot like Elena. She would be reasonably priced, since her reputation has taken a hit in recent years, and she’s looking for work.  There are almost too many reasons why she would be perfect.
But that hit her reputation took? It was lethal. Her parting ways with Glee was brutal, ugly, and public. She also went through an awkward and unfortunate “I’m angling to be a pseudo Khardasian phase”, which would not look great for the Disney brand and probably not what they are looking for in someone who might potentially play a Disney Princess ™. And, even though her asking ticket is certainly lower than it would’ve been a few years ago, it still might be more than OUAT is looking to pay with their current budget cuts.
Still,Naya is a guaranteed headline. She’s the right age and the right look for the role. And you cannot possibly make a list of Latina actresses in their late 20s/ early 30s without her being at the top of it. So here we are.
Tumblr media
Alexa Vega- 28
Alexa Vega is still most famous for her childhood role as Carmen Cortez in the Spy Kids franchise in the late 90s and 00s. But, her recent “comeback” adult career is very interesting to me. She did a stint on Nashville a few years back, she stared in a few low budget movies that gained headlines, but not a lot of warm critical attention. But she’s around and steadily looking for work. She’s wholesome enough and I could see Disney being comfortable linking their brand to her.
Much like Naya, her casting would bring a headline, and she doesn’t come with the same BTS baggage or relatively high asking price. She’d have to be willing to die her hair back to its original dark brown color (she’s been going blonde the last few years), but I think this has realistic potential...
Tumblr media
Francia Raisa- 28
Francia is best known for her fan favorite role as Adrian Lee, a pregnant teenager on ABC Family’s hit teen drama, The Secret Life of the American Teenager. She also starred in the cult classic Bring It On: All or Nothing (my favorite in the guilty pleasure franchise).  She’s currently a radio host, but she definitely shopped around last pilot season and might still be looking for work that will bring her back to the screen.
Tumblr media
Seychelle Gabriel- 26
Seychelle is maybe best known for her role as Princess Yue in the (racist- but I won’t hold it against her this time) Last Airbender, but she had a memorable role in Eva Mendes’ The Spirit a few years back, and a reoccurring role on Weeds. She also was a series regular on Fallen Skies and had regular voice over work for The Legend of Korra as Asami Sato. She hasn’t had regular on screen work in a few years, but continues to guest star here and there. I’m positive she’s looking for a bigger opportunity.
Tumblr media
Josie Loren- 30
Josie played another fan favorite, Kaylie Cruz, on ABC Family’s, Make It or Break It. She went on to have a regular role on season 7 of The Mentalist, but hasn’t worked regularly in while. She’s probably the cheapest asking price on this list? Which I could see being important for OUAT’s current financial outlook.
Tumblr media
Christian Serratos- 26 (Never mind, I just found out her character is still on The Walking Dead)
Christian worked heavily as a tween and teenager, first on Nickelodeon shows Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide and Zoey 101, then in the Twilight series. I thought she had a lot of potential, but since I don’t watch TWD I had no idea she was currently working in a regular role (on one of the highest rated TV show’s in the country at that!). So yay for her, but she’s not viable anymore :(
Tumblr media
Jackie Cruz- 30
Jackie Cruz has regular work on Orange is the New Black, but her character is used sparingly and a lot of that cast has branched off into other, more mainstream roles in the last few years, I can’t help but wonder if that might also interest her? She’s exceedingly talented, but I’m not sure she’s the right “look” for the show- both physically (she is super tall, and let’s be real the OUAT cast is a bunch of short actors, her signature bangs would be out of look for Elena) and in a PR sense, she’s an openly queer actress on a trendy, hot button show about prisons. I am not convinced that Disney would want to take that risk.
Tumblr media
Diane Guerrero- 30
Diane works opposite Jackie on OITNB. She has almost the exact same pluses and minuses to her casting. Diane’s not queer (that we know of), but is an incredibly outspoken DREAM activist working on immigrants’ rights. She’s on an edgy show about female prisons. But, she also works reoccurring on Jane the Virgin and has proven to “clean up well”. So, there’s that? I guess... Much like Jackie, she has a lot of “buzz” and “heat” around her, but has yet to be able to turn that into viable, stable, long term work.
And Last, but CERTAINLY NOT LEAST....
Tumblr media
Aimee Carrero- 28
Aimee Carrero is BY FAR MY FAVORITE GUESS FOR THIS ROLE. She has everything they are looking for- she’s the right age, the right “look”, she’s coming from ABC Family/ Freeform-- which is both under the Disney corporate umbrella and has the kind of wholesome branding that they would be looking for, she’s been publicly cordial/friendly with Lana in the past, and this is the kicker....
SHE VOICES PRINCESS ELENA ON THE CARTOON ALREADY!!!!!
You can not beat this.
She’s currently working as a supporting regular on Young & Hungry, but was poised to star in a spin off last year that never came to fruition; she’s looking to branch out into a bigger role. This could be that role for her.
Make it happen, ABC :)
Tumblr media
Ok, that list was super detailed and so long that probably only a few of you are going to read it anyway. My apologies! My inner researcher came out to play and I couldn’t reign her back in :) But hopefully those of you who did make it to the end had fun imagining with me and maybe this will spark some excited “head castings” of your own!

rules: complete the survey and say who tagged you in the beginning. when you’re finished, tag people to do this survey. have fun and enjoy!
Tagged by @patsmount
1: are you named after someone? Literally the character from Lewis Carroll novel? Although I doubt my mum ever read the original novel bc she doesn’t read much, but she had the official Disney picture book, with art from the movie, and she was obsessed with it, she brought it anywhere she went. At least that’s what she told me 2: when was the last time you cried? Yesterday for a very delicate + serious reason that maybe it’s best not to report here since this is supposed to be fun to read. Let’s just say I’m trying to come to terms with smth atm. Also yesterday it was a very upsetting day in general bc I’m trying to make friends but people keep blowing me off 3: do you like your handwriting? I love it even though people laugh at it and they’re are not sure wheter they should be amused by it or be slighly condiscending with it, and I’m sure they find it ridiculous (actually it was someone from this site who called it ‘so funky’; hi Zuzana, love you), but yeah I love it, it’s an expression of my artistic personality 4: what is your favourite lunch meat? I’m a vegetarian?? Also I’m not familiar with strange American terminology when it comes to food, why can’t you just eat pasta for lunch like normal people 5: do you have kids? Ahaha 6: if you were another person, would you be friends with you? Probably not lbr 7: do you use sarcasm? I like how Martina answered ‘not as much as I used to’, I never overcame my Daria-wannabe phase and I don’t have any regrets (ok maybe I have a few at times) 8: do you still have your tonsils? Yes 9: would you bungee jump? Lmao no 10: what is your favourite kind of cereal? Ehrm...plain oats, does that count? Or organic muesley with dark vegan chocolate chips or smth. Again, I’m not sure if these things count as ‘cereal’ but I’m a really boring person 11: do you untie your shoes when you take them off? I never though about this before but I guess I generally don’t 12: do you think you’re a strong person? No, I’m weak in all regards 13: what is your favourite ice cream? Black cherry and dark chocolate 14: what is the first thing you notice about people? Mmm... if they give me good/pure people vibes or if the struck me as being completely self-absorbed and selfish + hypocrytical/fake (I’m sorry guys, I’m all for self love if it’s done to empower yourself and others but I still don’t associate those traits I just described with being good people, I’ll understand if you disagree) 16: what is the least favourite physical thing you like about yourself? Actually I was thinking about this question and I realized I like my body??? Wow, this is a really positive thing to find out lol I mean, I still don’t feel very confident when I go out wearing my natural hair down+ glasses + chapped lips, so I guess I don’t love my natural hair, my dark circles, my skin, wearing glasses, and sometimes I’m concerned about my knees/legs because with the passing of the years my knees are getting more and more turned inwardly and my articulations creek like those of an old lady when I get up, but that’s more of an health concern. Uh, and sometimes I wish I was taller. But like, I don’t love all these things, but I’ve come to terms with them, I accept them, I like them. I like my body. (I like my posture less it’s really bad at all times. I slouch A LOT and get into super weird poses lmao). Also why is this question only about negative traits, shut out to my naturally voluminous, long-ass eye-lashes that I love 17: what color pants and shoes are you wearing now? I’m in my underwear 21: favourite smell? Martina stole my answer, lavender, but also I loove the smell of those candles that ALL the brands make for Halloween? You know the candle I’m talking about, you can find almost the same thing in a 99-dollar stollar or at Yankee Candle, it smells of cinnamon and sugar and other spices and vaguely like burning wood?? Also my favourite perfumes tend to be citrus fragances. Also green tea I forgot about green tea omg scratch all of that it’s green tea 22: who was the last person you spoke to on the phone? My dad, same answer as Martina 23: favourite sport to watch? I find watching tennis weirdly relaxing for some reason. Also years ago I used to do (roller) figure skating and at the time I used to watch (ice) figure competions but now I can’t be bothered 24: hair color? Dark brown + reddish 25: eye color? Dark brown 26: do you wear contacts? Yes 27: favourite food to eat? You can’t possibly ask me this question. All the food 29: last movie you watched? 8 femmes 30: what color of shirt are you wearing? I’M IN MY BRA 31: summer or winter? If I have to choose Winter bc Summer is my least favourite season but fuck both of them tbh Spring ftw  32: hugs or kisses? I want to be kissed on my neck rn 33: what book are you currently reading? I’m still reading Ni D’E’ve ni D’Adam by Amélie Nothomb, even though it’s a 100-page long book, bc I’m going through an intese ‘watching Youtube 24/7 and not reading for shit’ phase. Someone save me 34: what do you miss right now? Mmh... nothing? I’m looking forward to the future more than the past at the moment 35: what is on your mouse pad? I use a laptop with a touchpad so 36: what is the last tv program you watched? Holby 37: what is the best sound? My favourite sound used to be smth very specific, you know the ‘thump’ a bottle does when you uncork it? Now I’m guess I’m watching too much asmr; I’m obssesed with tapping. I find myself tapping on things in stores and people stare at me.  38: rolling stones or the beatles? The Beatles but only bc I literally only know 3 RL songs 39: what is the furthest you have ever traveled? England I think, so not very far lol 40: do you have a special talent? I like to think I can write but it’s unclear if I can still do it + if I’ll ever be able to do it English well enough 41: where were you born? Sicily
I tag my most recent followers: @izzyhuett, @kitscaboodle, @fictionally-teddi, @biancagrieve, @lockbearer, @matildaswan, @misskatekane and @tall-maja, because I want to get to know them :D
If anyone read the whole thing thank you omg
