Here for @flashfictionfridayofficial’s prompt
Warnings: Mentioned (non human) child death, referenced physical assault. There’s a lot of nebulous stuff about death, okay?
Word Count: 394
Yes the title and the four-line poem is from “The Hollow Men” by T.S. Eliot. But just assume the bit is all that was written in this world.
But a Whimper
When Tyrone first read the poem, he didn’t understand it.
“This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.”
What did that mean? He had known death, had watched it creep up on him and his hatchmates, had seen it in shattered eggs and torn wings. Death was loud and snarling and covered in scales and blood. And wasn’t death the end of the world?
When he’d mentioned it to Miltiades, his teacher had just smiled fondly and ruffled his hair.
When he’d brought it up to Professor Tirian, the man had looked so incredibly sad for a long moment. When he smiled, it didn’t reach his eyes, and told Tyrone he’d understand when he was older.
It was only when he brought it up to Lorelei that someone answered him. He was still unsure about the healer-in-training, but at the very least she didn’t brush him off.
“It’s a metaphor or somethin’. Most ends, whether they’re death or its like, are not some grandiose thing. They’re small, quiet things. Pitiful, unnoticeable. Easily missed by anyone who wasn’t right there. And that’s…” she had paused there, leaning back on her hands, staring up at the sky from where they sat by the Stream. Her eyes looked just as sad as Professor Tirian’s had been, and Tyrone was reminded that she worked in the Keep’s clinic as she trained. Despite having the best healers around, not everyone who ended up there survived.
“…that’s life. Tiny ends that nobody notices. So t’me the poem is saying that’s how everything is.”
It was only after everything that Tyrone thought he understood. As he rested in the clinic, trying to chase away the memories of once-trusted hands causing him so much pain, Tyrone found himself tracing the words of the poem across his bedspread.
“This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.”
And wasn’t that appropriate? His world was ending, and all he could do was whimper. Biting his lip, Tyrone pulled the blanket over his head and curled into a ball. This is the way his world is ending. Not with any bangs, but only a silent whimper.

((this is your chance 😜))
They had done this song and dance a few times now and it was slowly grating on his nerves.
The other one was actually not trying to do any harm, he realized... concerning their first interaction though, he was still unaware when the disgust with touching him stopped and this unhealthy obsession had begun.
He wasn't even that certain how much of him WAS him in that regard, but apparently a few things were of no regard when it came to his proximity.
Sleeping on his cape in animal form seemed to be one of them and it had happened one too many times in the last week.
He KNEW that the fabric was already sliced up, he knew the things was damaged beyond repair and that being that way actually gave him this kind of fresh from the darkness charm that caused him to look daring and dangerous at the same time, but that didn't mean he would willingly let her damage his property even further.
So he simply picked her up once more, lifting her form from beneath her front legs, not caring if she tried to swipe at him in anger from kneading her claws into the fabric a few moments ago and glared at her, nose crinkled up in a snarl as he told her in a no nonsense tone:
"Not. My. Cape."
He was weird that way.

Why I M O, Pokeshipping is dead. ( kinda hot take, sorry pokeshippers. )
Now as to what your here for, what killed pokeshipping. There are 3 main contributors to the death of pokeshipping.
1.) The length of time from when misty was replaced to now,
2.) Serena and Amourshipping
3.) The Pokémon sun and moon anime
The length of time from when misty was replaced to now. Now while this might not have been much of an issue if the other 2 bullet points didn’t exist, it has been over a decade at this point, since we last saw misty, meaning that we have a severe lack in character development, and that gives time for other potentially better ships to be created, which leads me to my next point,
Serena and Amourshipping. Possibly one of the biggest ships right now, (which at this point isn’t going to fizzle out anytime soon. ) With Amourshipping going so far, as to introduce a major plot point in ash’s story by having Serena be his childhood acquaintance, many other points that multiple poketubers like Catch ‘Em All Saul, bring up in their videos from years past, to the kiss, and even the writers basically confirming the darn thing.
Amourshipping Confirmed?
So at this point, ( unless they throw all that away, which please. Don’t. ) there is next to no hope of pokeshipping to ever become cannon, which is only further proven by my last point,
The Pokémon sun and moon anime. Now, this is honestly the iceberg that sank the ship, because Brock and Misty returned twice in the Sun and Moon anime, which I’m pretty sure was for let’s go promotion. Now this is where all hope is lost for pokeshipping because even though they returned twice, Misty had literally zero emotional moments with ash whatsoever. No pokeshipping pandering, no flashbacks, nothing. Here’s another video explaining that further.
Now while the only good thing to come out of the re-return episodes was Brock possibly finally finding a girlfriend,
Brock x Olivia
This was the point of no return for Misty and pokeshipping in general. Misty, even though she returned twice, in the most recent anime, had literally no development, and nothing to show how she grew as a character since her absence, her return seems pointless and devoid of substance, and with another ship still gaining popularity at an exponential rate, I’m sorry pokeshippers, but,
It’s time to pay your respects, and move on.
R.I.P Pokeshipping: 1997-2019
Why I M O, Pokeshipping is alive and well ( kinda hot take, sorry andrewsshippers. )
Now as to what your here for, why pokeshipping is alive. There are 3 main contributors to the livelihood of pokeshipping.
1.) The length of time from when misty joined the show,
2.) Pikachu and Piketshipping
3.) The Cory in the House anime
The length of time from when misty appeared to now. Now while this might not have been as much proof as the other 2 bullet points, it had been over a decade until sun and moon, since we last saw misty, and even without any extra character development, fans still drew art and wrote fanfiction. Still, that gives time for other potentially better ships to be created, which leads me to my next point,
Pikachu and Piketshipping. Possibly one of the biggest ships right now, (which at this point isn’t going to fizzle out anytime soon. ) With Piketshipping going so far, as to introduce a major plot point in ash’s story by having ketchup bottle be his childhood acquaintance that pikachu falls in love with, many other points that multiple poketubers like Tom Ato & Anne Chovy, bring up in their videos from years past, to the lick of ketchup from the bottle, and even the writers basically confirming the darn thing.
Piketshipping Confirmed?
So at this point, ( unless they throw all that way, which please. Don’t. ) there is next to no reason not to ship piketshipping or make it cannon. Pikachu likes red things like his trainer, and misty has red hair, which is only further proven by my last point,
The Cory in the House anime. Now, this is honestly the iceberg that failed to sink the titanic of ships, because Cory returned twice on television, which I’m pretty sure was for disney promotion. Now this is where all hope was restored for pokeshipping because even though he returned twice, Cory had literally zero emotional moments with ash whatsoever. This is because Cory is a wholesome anime protagonist who understands that ash and Misty belong together. Here’s another video explaining that further.
Now while the only good thing to come out of the re-return of Cory was everything, including Cory possibly finally finding a girlfriend,
Cory x Meena
This was the point of no return for Misty and pokeshipping in general. Misty, after returning twice, in the most recent anime, continued to have feelings for ash because Cory didn’t try to take pokeshipping away because he has a crush on Meena, and wanted ash and Misty to be canon. I’m sorry, andrewsshippers, but.
It’s time to pay respects to the Miyabi Akasaka gods, and move on.

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".
Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"
And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".
Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.
At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.
So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!
Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!
Edit: crediting my therapist by name with her permission - this term was coined by Nahime Aguirre Mtanous!
Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.

🔪 [Arcadia]
The job seemed simple, caravan guard for a group of traders on a new venture. Unfortunately, said traders were having a bit of trouble negotiating with their possible new trade partners. Rein tried to intervene when he noticed the negotiations breaking down and several of the traders started to get irate with the locals.
Before he could stop them, harsh words turned into an outburst causing one of the traders to make the biggest mistake they could at the moment. Within moments of the trader losing his temper and striking the local, Rein noticed several armed people heading their way.
Rein did his job as best he could. Using a spear, the end sheathed as to not cause any serious injuries, he made a stand to buy the traders time to get to safety. He made quick, precise, strikes at vital points to incapacitate those attempting to harm the traders, even if they did deserve it.
The traders however, didn't seem to care and left him behind as the wagons sped off. Rein sighed and gritted his teeth as he found himself outnumbered and more than likely outmatched, "Would it be possible to stop this before someone gets seriously hurt?" he asked despite being ready to fight should the answer be unfavorable.
