Interview with Jacob Anderson, Sam Reid and Bailey Bass of “Interview with The Vampire” on AMC and AMC+ by Suzanne 9/29/22
This was a fun roundtable with the three stars of this great new vampire show. If you love vampire shows, or the Anne Rice novels, you should love this show. It’s very well done, and these actors are great in it. Jacob plays Louie, and we see the story through his eyes as told to ailing reporter Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian, who’s outstanding as always). Sam Reid plays LeStat, the seductive vamp that turns Louie and becomes his friend, lover, mentor, etc. Bailey plays Claudia, the young woman that joins them. They were very kind and fun to interview.
Suzanne:   Hi, I’m Suzanne Lanoue from TVMEG.com, and I’ve watched the first episode. I didn’t get screeners till this morning, so I only got to watch the first one so far, but I’m really enjoying it. It just grabs you and drags you in. So, congratulations on being renewed for season two already, which is great. Do you know when you’ll be starting to film season two, or have you already started filming it?
JACOB ANDERSON:   We haven’t started. We haven’t started shooting, no.
SAM REID:   Probably, I don’t know if we can say anything. [Laughs]
Suzanne:   Have they told you yet?
JACOB ANDERSON:   They haven’t not told us anything.
Suzanne:  [Chuckles} OK, well, thank you!
Jamie from SCIFI VISION:  Hi, I’m Jamie Ruby from SciFi Vision. Thanks for talking to us today, I really enjoyed the first five episodes that we’ve seen. So, for the three of you, can you kind of talk about how you balanced what you pulled from the book versus what you added with your own spin on it?
SAM REID:   Hello, Jamie, I’ll answer that. No. But I would say that anything for myself and my character, my own spin probably came from my own interpretation of the books and Rolins’ work. So, I wasn’t really trying to put any of my own spin on it. It’s just how I imagined it to be, really.
JACOB ANDERSON:   Yeah. I second that. It’s like, you will always view a character through your own lens to an extent and then it’s just kind of, I mean, I guess with anything, it’s like, do other do the other creative people like that, and do they want to discuss it? But you don’t want to mess with this. Like the combination of Anne Rice’s writing and Rolins’ writing, you don’t really want to touch it, you don’t want to just sort of throw your own stuff in just for the sake of it.
SAM REID:   They’re so dense already the characters that it sort of would be a shame to try and deviate too much of thing.
JACOB ANDERSON:   What could you possibly add?
SAM REID:   Yeah.
BAILEY BASS:   I feel the exact same way. It’s really, yes, we were cast because there’s something special in us that Rolin and the entire team really enjoyed when we were doing our auditions. But other than that, it’s really just doing the research and the book, reading the scripts, doing our own technique, and then just coming and creating in this world.
Jamie:  Okay, great. Thank you so much.
Jamie from STARRY MAG:  This is Jamie Steinberg, with Starry Constellation Magazine. Jacob, this is another deeply tortured soul for you to portray. Is there something about these kinds of characters that really draw you to them? Or is this them finding their way to you? Or is it something you see in them that really resonates with you and makes you want to portray them?
JACOB ANDERSON:   I think it’s a combination of both. We find each other. I think I’m slightly less like Grey Worm than I am like Louis. But yeah, I mean, I think you normally want to be like very boundaried when you talk about things and be like, “Oh, well, I’m so removed from the character, and I’m brilliant at acting and blah blah blah blah blah”. But to be honest, yeah, I feel very, very connected to Louis. It’s the thing that bothered me about how Anne Rice wrote him, and also how Rolin wrote him as well. Yeah, I’m drawn to characters who are searching. And I’d ask him questions, not just about the world, but about their place in it and what they contribute or don’t contribute to it. But yeah, I also I felt like it would be like, narcissistic of me to be like, “I am the only person who can play Louis.” But namely, because there is somebody else that’s done it, as well. Many people.
Jamie:  Well, I think you brings such a unique take on it, though, because of the artistry you have. Both of these characters that you mentioned, have just been wonderfully nuanced, I think through your portrayal. So it might be just a little bit time for you to pat yourself on the back for what you’ve brought to the role on your own.
JACOB ANDERSON:   This one’s for you, Bailey.
QUESTION:   Question for Jacob and Sam, one of the really interesting things about this particular adaptation is the romance that we kind of finally get to see between Louis and Lestat. Can you speak to that a little bit? What does it mean to you to be able to portray that relationship in that way?
SAM REID:   Well, I think AMC has the rights to the entire Vampire Chronicles, and so it’s very important to make sure that relationship is established early on. Particularly as the books progress, it becomes much more clear that they are in a very intense romantic relationship. So, I think it’s it’s great to make sure that we’re serving the story correctly. And it wouldn’t be Anne Rice’s Interview With The Vampire if it wasn’t there. So, yeah.
QUESTION:   I was wondering, and this is kind of specifically for Bailey and Sam, the show doesn’t shy away from race or that being a factor at all for their very long life experience. Was that important to you? And were you afraid of any ignorant backlash, because previously, the characters were paid by white actors?
BAILEY BASS:   I was really excited to play Claudia. It’s really a dream to play such a complex character that’s very loud and unapologetic. I honestly didn’t think twice about anything else. I just knew that Rolin was very intentional about the actors that he wanted to cast in the show, and I’m very fortunate that I was one of them. I just dove into all the research. I read the book. I would cross reference the book and the script and see the quotes that Rolin took from the book and was very intentional about adding them into the script. After doing all the research, I mean, I became Claudia and it was fun to play her.
JACOB ANDERSON:   Yeah, I think something that Rolin’s done, which is – I’m almost loath to call it important, but like it creates a richness is that this isn’t a colorblind casting situation. Louis’ central question is about his humanity and his place in humanity. I think that if you were to cast a black actor or black actors for Louis and Claudia, and to not address that, you’d take a lot away from that question of their humanity. I’m glad that we don’t shy away from it. And in terms of backlash, I just don’t want to give it energy anymore. Like I just – people are going to – I think people need to be seen. Sometimes they’ll say anything to be seen or recognized, and it’s sad, but it’s the internet.
QUESTION:   I would love for you to talk a little bit about what it’s like just being vampires, being able to play vampires when biting people and having these kinds of scenes. What goes into that and how much fun is that to play? How difficult is that to play?
SAM REID:
It’s very fun. It’s very fun. Yeah, you know, because we’ve got a lot of elements that come into every scene. So, they’re very beautiful, sort of rich dialogue-heavy scenes, but we also have this whole element of the vampire, you know, he kills, so we’ll be pausing for the blood to be put in. We had all these different types of blood that we’d been drinking and tasting, and they made us hibicus flavored blood when we had to drink large amounts of it.
JACOB ANDERSON:
It did not taste like hibiscus. It tasted like it was like a Sour Patch Kid.
SAM REID:   Yeah.
JACOB ANDERSON:   But in liquid form.
SAM REID:   But there’s a lot of thought and consideration [that had] gone into this. But yeah, it’s so much fun, really. Vampires are, I think, the best type of monster, because they have so much humanity. They’re so articulate. They experience a huge amount. Anne Rice is responsible for our shift in vampires, because she puts the perspective into the eyes of the monster, and you have empathy for them. So, it’s very fun to do these really extreme, horrific things, but also with a level of understanding and empathy and bringing that into the character. So, it’s a fun thing to do.
JACOB ANDERSON:   It’s the best! It’s the best. The best monsters.
Jamie from SCIFI VISION:  So, obviously, you guys do go to some really dark places, though, with your characters. Can you sort of talk about getting into that headspace, and how you sort of, I guess, get back out of it? Is it hard to sort of go there? For all three of you.
BAILEY BASS:   Yeah, it’s hard. We had such long days that it kind of, for me personally, it was hard for me to differ[entiate], like, who’s Claudia and who’s Bailey. So, I kind of had to, like really sit with myself and reflect, but it’s hard. But then also, this is what I love to do, and playing such an extreme character, that’s what makes it fun is that I get to relive and be in these spaces that I would never normally be in if I didn’t get to play Claudia. But the dark, even though it’s dark and everything, I definitely enjoyed it. And I had Sam and Jacob, which they were incredible scene partners, and we all had each other. We made sure that throughout the whole process, our mental health, even though we’re like hysterically crying sometimes that afterwards, our mental health was still good,
SAM REID:   I think to Bailey’s point, like, sometimes the darkest jobs or the darkest sets where the material is the most bleak are the most fun, because, we instinctively know how to just kind of like, help ourselves through that. So, we’ll be making a lot of jokes. You know, it is ridiculous, sometimes what we’re doing, and you have to step back and think [laughs] You know, we’re suspended in the air, covered in blood, so we just kept it light. It was a fun thing to do.
JACOB ANDERSON:   Yeah, I agree. I mean, it’s dense. It’s dense, so you need to focus on the language as well. Like, aside from, yeah, we had a lot of fun, but when you’re doing the scene, you focus on what you’re doing. And I think if you let yourself get dragged into it too much, then hard to to do your job, I think.
Jamie from STARRY MAG:  Bailey, this is such a beautiful costume you have. Talk about when you first saw what you’d be wearing for the series, and if you had any input, and if it takes really putting on that costume to embody your character.
BAILEY BASS:   Costume is one of my favorite things in my job, being able to speak with the costume designer and be able to talk about what she saw when she read the script, because it’s not just me, it’s a big collaboration of an incredible crew that helps make us look good, basically. And to be able to talk to hair, makeup, and costume and get to know what their first ideas were when they read the script, and then being able to collaborate with them and say what I thought, was really, really fun. And the costume designer for this show, Carol, was just so collaborative. I came in and we were talking about posture. That’s a very big thing for Claudia, because in the beginning, she’s like fourteen years old, and she’s excited being a vampire. She would shrug a lot and just walked like, however and had terrible posture. So, the costume designer would think about that when she was making the costumes. And then also I have to look like a little girl. So, she created these beautiful bows along with making sure that the shape of my costumes hid any curves possible. So, when I put them on, I really felt like a little girl. So, when I was doing the scenes where Claudia is struggling, she wants to be a woman, and I’m sitting in this pink dress that it’s not flattering to anything that’s me as Bailey, it was really easy to feel what Claudia would be feeling at that moment.
Suzanne:   I really enjoyed the wedding scene and your dancing, Jacob; that was great. Was that actually you dancing? And did you have to train for that, or did you already know how, and will there be any more singing or dancing in the show?
JACOB ANDERSON:   That was me and Steven Norfleet, who plays Paul, and we had about a month to train, to practice. I don’t know if you’ve ever done tap dancing, but it’s like learning how to walk again, like how to walk for the first time, like to get your brain to coordinate in that way and to like shift the weight of your body is really confusing. And to add to that we did a lot of our lessons on Sikkim (???). And it’s all like, it’s all sound. You like making music with your feet, but with the lag of, of like, you know, doing it online. But you just drill; you just drill it every day. You drill it every day, and just you have to listen. It’s less about like being mechanical about your body and just like listening to the sound. But there is there is more dancing in the show.
Suzanne:   Oh, good.
JACOB ANDERSON:   Yeah. It was in the trailer, right?
SAM REID:   Yeah, the three of us did dancing lessons.
JACOB ANDERSON:   Yeah, we did.
QUESTION:   I’m curious to just have any of you or all of you talk a little bit about what you love most about the dynamic between all three of your characters, either once Claudia comes in, or kind of as that progresses.
JACOB ANDERSON:   I find it, I think from Louis’ point of view, he’s trying to recreate a kind of family dynamic that he is grieving for in his human life. I think it’s probably the thing that he misses most in some ways. It’s like a grounding thing, is his brother and his sister and his mom, maybe to a lesser extent, but maybe not. So, I find the way that it kind of goes for them, and for him, it’s kind of unexpected. I think he wanted, he was hoping that in bringing somebody else into their family, I think he thought that Claudia might be like him. [laughs] So, it’s interesting. I feel like an outcast, but to also be a part of – I mean, I’ll let Bailey talk more about about that part of it, but really, Claudia ends up being sort of forgotten about a little bit, and their dynamic, which is sad.
BAILEY BASS:   I think what’s wonderful though, is that there’s really no protagonist or antagonist. It changes through every scene in every episode, because these characters are so specific and complex, and Rolin Jones, the writer of the show, did an incredible job of explaining in depth why we do what we do. There’s a reason why we kill the people that we do, why we hurt each other. And because of that, the viewer kind of feels bad for the person hurting the other, but then also feels bad for the person being hurt.
QUESTION:   So, obviously, as vampires, your characters live very long lives. Which era would you like to see, be able to play your character in?
JACOB ANDERSON:   80s 80s 80s. I want the pastels. I want the hair. Let’s go, 80s.
SAM REID:   I’d probably do the 1700s. I think Lestat really that is where he’s from, and that’s the era in which he was born into, so I’d quite like to see him in that in that era.
BAILEY BASS:   I just want to get to the 50s. Like, I just want Claudia to get to the 50s so I can wear all those skirts and just explore more hairstyles, because we evolved. Doing the prep work, there wasn’t a lot of hairstyles – we had a horrible of time looking for photos of black girls in that time period with very versatile hair, which we know they existed, just no one took pictures of them. So, to be able to expand that more and show women who have curly hair, that this is what they look like in that time. I’d love to expand that and go into the 40s and 50s.

Ohhh I love your “obscure” headcanons so much! Armand is definitely the pettiest, bitchiest drama queen who ever lived (and I love him for it) and while I don’t think he’s outright lying in the sense that… while there’s obviously some discrepancies re: what he says and what actually happened, he also believes his own version of reality and he uses it as a coping mechanism (unlike some other vamps in the series who are just good old fashioned liars lol). To him, those aren’t really lies, but what he’s told himself to believe in order to move forward and survive. Also! Daniel 100% tells him he loves him while he’s a mortal, IIRC it’s mentioned how they fight and make up a lot and always reconcile with kisses and blood exchanges, and Daniel says “I love you, give me more”, or something along those lines. TVA!Armand really tried it but we remember 😌
Oh thank you, LOL. Yes, he is petty AF. But I totally agree, I think you're spot on about Armand and how in that moment, that is his version of reality. He isn't lying in an intentional sense about the Daniel stuff. He's in such a terrible headspace, he feels abandoned and lost, he just tried to commit suicide, and his mental state is not good (understatement of the year). So when he says things like "no one alive ever said they loved me" or "we never got our springtime" or whatever, these are things that absolutely feel true to him. He's so absorbed in his own pain and sadness, he can't really recall the good.
I do think there's part of him that is lashing out and wants to hurt Daniel on some level, but yes, largely it's just... he's so hurt himself that he cannot think of their relationship as anything but a total failure. He's seeing it through the lens of 'He left me, he doesn't love me, it's all bad.' 😭 He may remember Daniel saying he loves him but in that moment, those words no longer feel true so he might as well not have said it at all, you know? (Okay, now I'm depressed.)
Of course, we know he did. Like you said, he does actually say it in QotD: "It would end with the embrace, the kiss, the blood stinging him, the shroud of dreams closing over him like a great net, hunger! I love you! Give me more!"
But also even if it wasn't directly stated, Devil's Minion is like 40 pages that covers 12 years of their life together! Twelve years! That's a hell of a long time. We get bits and pieces of their conversations, mere snippets and little anecdotes. There's a lot that isn't included.
I have no doubt Daniel told him he loved him, verbally and otherwise, literally hundreds of times. Probably thousands. I would bet cash money Daniel has several of those times recorded on home video, even. I can only imagine Daniel reading that line and going "You've got to be kidding me." (The most mild reaction he will have to anything in TVA, tbh.)
Anyhow, thank you for the message, anon!

Hello 👀 can I please hear the potential Raven Queen and Imogen stuff in the Let Me sequel?
Warning: This got long lol.
Ok so... in Let Me, while everything revolves around Imogen and Otohan's interactions, there is still a heavy focus on plot, since it's following along with the canon campaign, with me making changes when necessary/interesting. (As opposed to the Won't You series, which purely serves to let me put those two in a box and shake 'em up, focusing more on characterization than plot).
So with that said, the Let Me Sequel will have a heavier focus on Bells Hells as a whole, even if viewed through Imogen's perspective. A big part of that will of course be Laudna, because she undeniably means so much to Imogen, and I don't like discounting or diminishing that. One thing Imogen will be facing is how she can help Laudna, with the gods as a whole being a potential if unnerving option.
Right now, the sequel outline is really just a list of chronological events and ways I can tweak them to serve the story, and there are lots of potential ways to do so!
Like imagine Otohan being privy to these "so about the gods" conversations. I imagine she would be dismissive/uninterested intially because it's not useful info to the Vanguard. But then the Raven Queen (or Duskmaven, and she's often called in Marquet) comes up, and suddenly Otohan is all ears, abruptly curious about Imogen's opinion of the gods and borderline cagey as to why ('Continue with your debates as long as you wish, but be wary of who you consort with.' <- that's Otohan lol.) And if that ain't a big red button that says 'Do Not Push' lol.
Maybe when Team Wildemount are in Uthordurn, Imogen slips away to the Matron of Ravens' temple and starts asking questions (as vague and awkward as she may be, going based on her recent Dawnfather temple visit lol). I imagine there'd be quite the warm up period for her; like's she's not just gonna become a cleric or paladin of the Duskmaven immediately. More so just asking questions and showing interest when the topic happens to come up, rather than actively seeking out information.
Meanwhile, you have Otohan in the back of her mind, clearly not liking this for some reason, even if she never says so directly. So then, maybe when Imogen exhausts surrounding sources of info, she starts asking Otohan. ('Didn't you follow the Duskmaven once? Heard you lost your faith during the war or something, though I'm guessing it had nothing to do with the 'horrors of war,' in your case.') And as you can likely imagine, Otohan doesn't appreciate this one bit. It becomes just one way Imogen can get under Otohan's skin, each question or mention crafted to hurt as much as weasel information out of her.
Imagine Otohan tuning in at very inopportune times (as Imogen is drinking from a clear fountain in an unnaturally dark chapel of sorts, as she's hesitantly stepping into a pool of blood, as the lid of one of those meditation coffins is being slowly pushed over her). Let Me Otohan will likely not have quite as sympathetic religious trauma as Moon Moms Otohan is being set up to have, but that's not to say she won't have any at all. And Imogen might quickly pick up that the easiest way to wring raw, honest answers out of Otohan is by exposing herself (and by proxy Otohan) to those types of rituals and situations.
Imogen may approach the Duskmaven very much as a 'here's the deal' sort of situation, bargaining for Laudna's life, but at the same time she has someone who is intimately aware of the intricacies of real faith and devotion. And I think that constant dichotomy between the two of them could be really cool (like imagine Imogen awkwardly attempting to perform some sort of prayer or ritual or whatnot, and Otohan abruptly snaps, 'Kneel, and bow your head,' because she's doing it wrong and can we please get on with this lol).
And as a final, fun note, most of Imogen's exposure to the Matron of Ravens has been through the Northern Hemisphere lens, where she is known as "the goddess of death, fate, and winter and watches over the transition between life and death" and is associated with ravens. But in Marquet, she is primarily referred to as the Duskmaven and is known as "the goddess of twilight, inevitability, and the passage of time in addition to her association with the transition into the afterlife" (Mirahaze). Certain sects also "depict her as a keen-eyed vulture with plumage varying from the shades of a sunset to the black of midnight" (Wiki).
On a more serious note, this will absolutely play into how both Otohan and Imogen view their own connection (with Otohan subconsciously placing a lot of value on the idea of fate and inevitability, no matter how much she claims the importance of seizing your own destiny, because of her history with the faith.)
On a less serious note, I think it'd be funny as fuck if the Duskmaven started sending a vulture to Imogen as a sign rather than the stereotypical raven, thinking, 'oh she's from Marquet so this is culturally relevant.' Meanwhile, Imogen, who knows jackshit about the cultural intricacies regarding worship of the Duskmaven in Marquet, is like 'did something fucking die in the hole? Why is this buzzard following us??' and poor FCG is having flashbacks.
Whew, this got way longer than expected. And I really shoudn't be suprised at myself; I hoped my ramblings were at least interesting!

Out of curiosity, if Marzanna is Zestial's daughter, wouldn't she be technically be some sort of vampire as well?
(Ik that it wasn't stated that Zestial is a vampire, but still)
Funny enough, I also think Zestial might be some sort of vampire! But he also shares traits of a scarecrow and a spider (to which ayylmao commented about from the looks of his design, including might being a vampire). And if you know me pretty well, I'm a sucker (pun intended) for vampires and scarecrows. Plus, if hell and heaven and demons and angels exist in the hellaverse then so should other mythical creatures too lol.
Answering to your question, I would like to think so as well given that you mentioned it. If Marza weren't a demon then she would definitely be a human/vampire hybrid like Marceline from Adventure Time or Dennis from Hotel Transylvania. Ironic enough, I read that in Balkan folklore, a "dhampir" is a mythical creature that is the result of a union between a vampire and a human--so that would be what Marza is in terms of Zestial being a vampire while Pentious is a human. (During my small research of hybrids, I've found that a hybrid between a vampire and a werewolf are called either were-pires or vaewolfves, and those were pretty dope).
However, I would imagine that Marzanna would be a day-walking vampire--to which if you don't know what a day-walking vampire is, I would look up the character Colin Robinson from "What We Do In The Shadows". Being a half-human that she is, she can walk in the daytime and not get burned to death, but she prefers dark, cold and gloomy weather as her preference; and she is able to eat human food (because it was said that vampires cannot eat food since they'll choke because they cannot really even swallow anything but blood and also vomit), including foods that have garlic in them since she isn't repelled by them.
However, she technically is still a vampire. Another reason why Zestial might be a vampire is because in a scene where Alastor adjusts his attire in a mirror in "Scrambled Eggs", you can see Al's reflection but not Zestial's (ik this could be just an animation viewing focusing on just Alastor, but still) but yet when we see Al and Zest walking past security cameras you can obviously see Zestial on the lens. Like being said, Marzanna can't see her reflection, is very nocturnal, and have a painful experience when touching pure, undiluted silver and holy water, and have hunger urges of drinking blood.
While she can get easily full on regular food on her human half, she is still in need of nutrition of her vampiric side as well. She could easily feed off of butcher-produced meat, but if not available, she would have to go out at night to hunt for mostly small birds and vermin to kill and eat. Larger animals like lamb and sheep, cows, horses, and pigs are considered large feasts for her and would be satisfied after she is finished.

ooh TOM RIDDLE PLEASE for the therapy HC game. either as an 11 year old before/alongside starting hogwarts, or in fifth year following the myrtle incident 👀
omg I was thinking about Tom Riddle on my run where I was considering different characters. I accidentally went on for a while with this one haha.
11 years old -
I should refer him out since I don't work with children but that's kind of a boring answer haha.
The key thing would be offering a safe, secure base! Also, we'd do work on feelings identification. Also coping skills for those feelings. It would definitely be structured more like adult therapy (or at least given that gloss) because he would HATE feeling like he was being treated like a child.
If we had the opportunity to keep working together, I think we'd do some identity stuff from a social justice lens -- especially around class and blood status -- and working to help him get comfortable with himself and all of his identities.
We'd also do some sneaky case management work (eg food, housing, transportation) though it would always be framed as very empowering and include pieces he is able to do on his own rather than things adults are doing for him.
Would love to do EMDR with him too (same core beliefs as below -- I'm bad, damaged, worthless etc)
5th year -
ooooooh. I'm imagining he'd be forced to go into therapy as a part of healing from the trauma of being a hero and saving the school but losing myrtle?
Trust building would be SO hard and so important. I'm not sure I'd be able to do it honestly. Limits of confidentiality would have to be very cleared outlined.
I think he'd just go into it like a checklist and like another class and wait to get a good grade and impress the adults and then leave.
My only strategy would be to be VERY honest with him and have him get involved in the treatment -- making it more about teaching him psychology and therapeutic treatment techniques than about treating him like a client but he's still the client, and I am managing to get some subtle support in there. (But more like, here are skills that will be useful for you in the future!) I think he's desperate to brag to someone about what he did, and it's possible I could make it me.
IF we get the opportunity to do deeper work (which I doubt but I'm an eternal optimist), I'd want to do EMDR with him - probably around value-based core beliefs (I'm bad, I'm worthless, I'm damaged) and try to move those to things like "I'm ok as I am."
If I were his therapist, I'd get really tempted to break confidentiality when he tells me about his first meeting with Dumbledore so I can go yell at Albus lol

How common is it for school feeders to hook up with people they taught/are teaching? We see a couple of students making moves so it doesn't seem taboo, but outside of gamzee getting with kurloz I don't think we've ever seen anyones advances come to fruition
I mean, it's a question of numbers really lol.
In romance as with a lot of things in troll/highblood society I tend to roll with "you can do whatever you want if you're willing to gamble you might die". There's mention made in-comic about the concept of "serendipity", which fanon often extrapolates into a societal concept of basically soulmates--which I find very fun as a facet of this aggressive, hardcore society. The archetypal troll murders without compunction, lives and dies for the empire, and also has multiple destined soulmates, haha.
ANYWAY all this to say that if there's some amount of spark there, then a lot of trolls as I write them are like "well damn, I guess we should go for it" and disregard other factors. Because what else are you going to do, spit in the face of serendipity? The feeders are powerful, socially valued, and necessarily pretty badass, so they get a lot of hopefuls of all ages hanging around hoping there's going to be a spark. Despite lots of attempts, though, there's not a lot of powerful church elders floating around and some of them are already quadranted to each other. I'd imagine it's pretty rare that one of their remaining quadrants gets snapped up by somebody significantly their junior.
Especially since several people in the fic have made mention of people trying to get quadrants with more powerful/older trolls as a means to climb the social ladder--both from Travye cautioning Kurloz, and also from the opposite side of Bastil trying to see if she could hook up with Karkat to do what (she thinks) Gamzee is doing, and increase her own importance by strongarming her way into somebody's quadrants. How much of that thought process is "serendipity is bullshit, I want to get mine" and how much is "this is what I want and I have convinced myself to hate/pity them" and how much is "I'm going to get more power, and then eventually when I'm established I'll find my REAL kismesis" presumably varies greatly troll to troll.
TBH through the lens of serendipity I feel like relationships with differentials in reputation, blood color, etc etc, would be retroactively more scandalous if you then broke up with the person! If you stick together, then what were you supposed to do? That was your moirail! But if you broke up then like Oof, Fam. Guess it wasn't real and also like why would you hook up with a teal anyway. Should've known. U_U I could have told you it wouldn't work out except if it turned out it was meant to be I would have been in the wrong, so I didn't tell you until you were broken up.

okay here's the sloppy entire vamp and priest story/lore
mentions of demons/satanism under the cut, physical and emotional abuse as well as the feeling of going mentally insane and drug use (done poorly lol)
Len used to have a crush on Monty early in their relationship but he confessed his "sin" to a pastor, a teacher he trusted. it didn't go well as the pastor would then physically and emotionally abuse Len until the boy developed an unhealthy attachment to the pastor, doing anything he asked for, even including learning about Satanic rituals (family bonding)
Monty would then start being "courted" by the pastor, the man trying to convince him into being a personal student like Len, but Monty at this point would waver faith in the Lord as he became closer with a certain vampire
the pastor didn't take no as an answer and would start forcing Monty to take personal lessons- just the two of them. the pastor threatened to tell the rest of the Church of Monty's disbelief in the Lord which would socially exile the priest. Monty still needed to live in the town, so he begrudgingly agreed
Monty would then be taught about demons and all that, taught how to perform exorcisms, and made to do them. Monty would be put into traumatizing situations of demonic activity as he was made to fix them. if Monty couldn't fix them, the pastor would punish him (take FULL creative liberty on how he was punished, like seriously. imagine anything and everything you want, no matter how fucked up)
the priest would slowly start having vivid dreams of demons getting him, visions of those he tried to save trying to get him with the intent to kill, all that bullshit- pushing him into an obsession with the Bible and trying to save himself, neglecting his vampire lover in the process
due to the lack of sleep from nightmares Monty starts to rely on sleeping pills, which he then becomes entirely dependent on, ignoring the fact that the amount of pills he took only worsened his visions when he was awake
Len is given the task to further Monty's descent into madness, where he then starts to feed the other priest with false thoughts and delusions. it doesn't take long that Len is now trying to "help" Monty during the visions. he guides Monty through them but he really just shaping them into what he wants Monty to see
with Len "aiding" Monty with his visions, the Scottish priest starts seeing an angel in his dreams and visions saying he was sent from the Lord to help him with the demons. that's not true
when Len saw that Monty was getting properly insane he told the pastor, who with Len's help does an evocation, which is summoning a demon (i feel so silly typing that out LMFAOO) the demon's price was a soul (original) so Len offered his to punish Monty for as long as he lived
after the demon summoning Monty admits all the pastor did to him to his vampire, who takes it upon himself to kill the pastor in cold blood in his own home. the entire town is shook by the murder of a beloved pastor, and it only fuels Len on more for revenge
Monty reaches a point where he doesn't feel safe in the town anymore, making him move away and leaving everything behind (including his vampire, the only one who understood him)
Len learns about Monty leaving and manipulates the vampire into obeying him. Len refuses blood or any comfort to his new "project", but threatens to abandon the vampire anytime he voices a complaint
after years of starving, emo vampire accidentally murders Len in a fit of blood lust. i say accidentally because he genuinely didn't mean to do that but he was so thirsty he couldn't really help himself😭he was already picking off the population of the town as the only times he drank was after he was staved so much thanks to Len lol
when Len is murdered, Monty's visions and dreams abruptly stop (because with Len gone the demon got his soul and was done being a dick to Monty) thanks to the post demon clarity Monty decides he needs to go back to home (the old town) to visit the Church again to make amends with God where he was first introduced to him
Monty comes back home to see the town pretty much deserted but he doesn't care as he breaks into the run down Church to pray, where he's met by that vampire he abandoned once
Monty is almost killed until he convinced emo boy that he was sorry, and that he missed him the entire time he was away (which he did, very much so) it ends up with them reconciling
years later Monty is able to get transformed, where he naps in his dirt coma for a year (you can never be too safe about premature vampire transformation) and he lives happily with his vampire lover while founding a vampire rehabilitation center where they aid vampires with understanding themselves and getting better control of their powers
the end

Okay, so I’ve been thinking about this, and my other problem with Zeke, lol, is this sort of broad, generalized belief that it was Ksaver that gave him the idea for the euthinazia plan. But… it wasn’t. There’s this overall tone when people talk about Ksaver’s influence on Zeke which would lead one to believe that Zeke was sort of indoctrinated in the early stages of his childhood development into this philosophical belief that life is meaningless and to have never been born would be better, and this is the main reason for Zeke’s later attempts to wipe out the Eldian race. But Ksaver didn’t even tell Zeke about what had happened to his family until Zeke was like 18 years old, and he never said anything to him about a plan to euthanize their people, but rather just said that he wished he had never been born. The idea to gain control of the founding Titan and use its power to euthanize the Eldian race came entirely from Zeke. He came up with that plan, not Ksaver. He even asks Ksaver about his ability to control the founding Titan's power through his royal blood, which supposes a sense of entitlement on Zeke's part to wield this power. Something we saw demonstrated in his treatment of Ymir, later on, this idea that she was beholden to him as a member of the royal family. And this tells you a lot about Zeke’s psychology too, and how he views himself. Based off of what Ksaver tells him and his own experiences with his parents, Zeke casts himself into the role of savior. He proclaims himself as the only one who can solve the problems facing their people. He extrapolates from Ksaver’s story that all Eldian’s would be better off having never been born, and appoints himself judge and jury in that regard, to carry out this “solemn duty” of eradicating their race. My problem with all of this is that Zeke lacks empathy. He has no empathy for other people. Other people’s thoughts and feelings never register for him as something he should consider or take into account when making his decisions. He sees everything through the lens of his own experiences and his own feelings and never thinks to consider anything from the other side. So it exposes Zeke’s proclamation that he’s trying to end people’s suffering as false. He doesn’t actually care what anyone else thinks or feels. Again, he can’t empathize with them. He can’t imagine it. Other people’s wishes get brushed aside in Zeke’s pursuit of his own, twisted dream. It then becomes a matter not at all concerned with the suffering of others, but instead a matter concerned only with Zeke’s suffering and his self-image as martyr. This is why I always say Zeke is a narcissist. His desire to “save” his people from suffering is, in fact, just a manifestation of Zeke’s inability to see or feel anything outside of his own self. His life is worthless and meaningless, thus, so is everyone else’.
Some people try to cite Zeke’s experiences in childhood as the reason for his lack of empathy, but on this is call BS. Zeke’s experience with his parents, for example, and having to turn them in to save himself, shouldn’t logically have lead to a lack of empathy in him. A host of other issues, sure, such as self-loathing and immense guilt. But a lack of empathy? I don’t see how. Some people also try to claim that Zeke lacked any sort of caring or loving guardian growing up and that this lead to him having no compassion for others, but again I call BS. Zeke had his grandparents and he had Mr. Ksaver, all of whom genuinely cared for him. Zeke realizes, in the end, only after Armin has to spell it out for him in big block letters, that he DID actually experience love and happiness in his youth. That he was cared for and valued and mattered to others. Zeke wasn’t able to come to this realization on his own because he himself is incapable of giving or receiving love. His lack of empathy makes him incapable. We see this incapability play out in his relationships with the other warriors, for example. In his lack of connection with them, even as they connect with him and consider him a real friend and mentor. In his disregard for and easy betrayal of them. And again, while Zeke’s childhood experiences no doubt caused him a host of issues, developing a lack of empathy or compassion for others shouldn’t have been one of them. I rather believe that this sociopathic tendency was innate to Zeke, and his experiences weren’t the root cause of it, but rather the trigger which brought those tendencies out.
Zeke is like a classic narcissistic personality. He wants to make and thinks everything IS about him. He’s manipulative and molds in his mind every circumstance and situation, and even other people, to fit around him, around his image of himself as a savior, and his views and beliefs about life in general. This is one of the reasons why I don’t believe Zeke’s claims about his motivation being a desire to end people’s suffering (even as Zeke may himself believe it. But then, there's very little to no self-evaluation going on with Zeke, leading to self-delusion). You have to actually be able to relate to and understand other people to want to help them. You have to be able to sympathize and empathize with them to feel compassion for them. But, again, Zeke doesn’t feel empathy for anyone but himself. I think every action Zeke takes is, in the end, motivated by self-interest. He wants to see himself as a savior and a martyr, and so he tries to forcefully fit everyone else into his plan to make himself into one by dismissing their own desires and needs as inconsequential, and by taking away their right to choose and, ultimately, to live, all, supposedly, in the service of "saving them". That, in the end, doesn't amount to fighting for the rights of others. It amounts to the opposite. It amounts to oppression and self-aggrandizement.

So let’s see if Wally gets to return back to normal with Flash Vol 2, Issue 28 - Bless the Beasts
Tumblr media
“...now it gets worse!” well hmm. The cover shows the reformed Captain Cold and Golden Glider, but they’re clearly in menacing poses (what’s with the crotch shot for Lisa ugh).
The people from this town are out for BLOOD by the way. At least Len knows Wally wouldn’t have murdered any children.
Here’s Wally punching a bunch of snowballs ice cannonballs
Tumblr media
For your what? Your glass? Your sass? lol
Tumblr media
So Wally is trying to do what he can to fight them and not get totally frozen. Meanwhile the towns people almost shoot Lisa. And then she just fucking slices a guy in the belly! I guess to be fair, he did lowkey threaten to murder her. Love that she’s always so unhinged when she’s wronged. Anyway, I’ve changed my mind. Maybe this was the correct reaction. 😂
Tumblr media
GASP! SHE!!
Tumblr media
Wally’s all tuckered out and asleep, and he doesn’t even realize the future love of his life is right around the corner. 😔
Yo, good on Len for not confirming it was Wally. Lol he just snatches the mic from her.
Tumblr media
Alright. ALRIGHT. I know the faces are weird in this style. All of them. But it really skeeves me out that this is what Linda looks like.
Tumblr media
Why did I feel like this should’ve been the end? It’s only been a dozen pages. Lol I was all satisfied with the one fight and ready to be like “welp see yall next time.”
So they’re headed to the cave to try to find the kids. At least somebody heard where they were going. Hopefully that’ll clear Wally’s name.
WHAT? THEYRE JUST PULLING THE SPIKES O U T ????? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I swear to god, if there’s no real explanation for why he was spikey, and it just stops being a thing purely bc they pulled them out, I’m gonna revolt. (Also, I’d be remiss not to mention shirtless Wally)
Tumblr media
He sleepy
Tumblr media
So they got in contact with the kids in the cave, and Wally rushed off to help.
Tumblr media
Love this kind of interaction.
Tumblr media
Oooooh one of my favorite parts is coming up... It makes absolutely no sense. I LOVE IT.
Tumblr media
NO SENSE!!! ABSOLUTELY  N O N E !
Tumblr media
Loool
Tumblr media
Final thoughts:
And we have good ol’ Flash back with us! And he’s immediately concerned about money. Yep that’s him alright.
Okay, I cannot just let it slide that he was all spikey. What? WHY? HOWWW?? And did they literally just not explain it, or did I somehow miss what caused that even after reading this whole arc twice?
But it was fun to see the infamous introduction of Linda Park. At least she looks like a mostly normal person in that last panel. I’m honestly not sure how quickly she becomes more involved in the story? This is about as far as I read before, up until 62, so many of the next ones are going to be totally new to me. Can’t wait!
Yo there was some Drama in the letters to the editor from #31 (most letters related to #28, so I read these as well). Apparently someone wrote in saying there was no way Wally could’ve made a crater via sonic boom. Then they published letters from two other guys explaining at length how it was not only possible, but it had to have happened. AND THEN they also published a follow up from the original guy apologizing and saying that one of the other two dudes wrote him directly to correct him. I know there’s fan discourse online, but could you imagine someone hand writing you a letter to correct you, and mailing it to your home?? 🤣 Wild.

i also really liked abigail ashe. I doubt she’ll come back. But I liked her.
This isn’t the ‘right genre’ for it lol. But a while back I had a stint where I tried to read some historical romances, and give them a chance, after somewhat enjoying Bridgerton the show. (And I did find some I really did enjoy, as no genre is a monolith of only one thing lol. I liked Lisa Klepyas a lot, with a sort of ‘gentler’ version of history but still including actual historical details which made it nicely feel like really seeing someone’s life from long ago, also because Lisa Kleypas tends to pick realistic life problems for the stories. I really LOVED Fingersmith by Sarah Waters, which was realistic to the point of horror, felt like reading a book From the era it was set, and was also probably more of a multi genre thing than a romance only... which i guess you might compare to Black Sails a bit closer, what with black sails having blood and being somewhat less ‘gentle’ in its historical depiction then some more fantastical pirate stories, still having love being a central part of the story).
Anyway... if I could find my ideal kind of romance historical novels? They’d either be more Sarah Waters lol (and I intend to read the rest of her books), or they’d be something like Abigail’s actual story in Black Sails. If perhaps at some point she met someone with the same ideals as her, or had to work with Billy at length for years. I think if we perhaps focused on her for a few eps (I don’t want to as I know she’s not the point of the story, but this is a thought exercise) perhaps in the wake of her father’s death and charles towns destruction, she becomes a political figure. Or perhaps she’s still too young, and so political figures use her like an ‘orphaned daughter’ to push their own political aims. Perhaps she refuses to play along and condemns the colonies for not listening to her, to good people, and getting what they asked for.
Perhaps, despite her value of honesty, she is So enraged and conflicted by her loss of her city that like James Flint she becomes a person she never thought she would BECAUSE she wants revenge. Becomes like Miranda, to the point where even if some good people (good pirates) die, like Miranda wanted even the children of Charles town to burn, now Abigail wants all pirates to meet their end in a way Ashe never had the COMMITMENT for. Never had the motivation to truly want their destruction from a place of personal loss, personal rage, personal revenge and the bravery and commitment to carry it out. I could imagine her playing antagonist (or useful aid to an antagonist) later, given her situation. Or, again, if she’s truly purer than Ashe or Miranda, and doesn’t feel pain so harshly she seeks revenge like Flint? Then I can see her being a voice of reason, intelligence, honesty, in the “civilized” places of the story, in a way her father never was and Lord Guthrie never was. A way that might be compatible with people like who Thomas was, draw in new idealists. My point is, she’s an interesting character to me.
I think the kind of historical romance I’d want to read? Would be something with a heroine like her in this story. One who has seen actual brutality pirates have done, and actual brutality civilization has done against them. If such a heroine is to have a story of falling in love with a pirate, or becoming one, or destroying them etc. (And of course, i know, i don’t know where to find it cause i find myself usually running into the historical romances with little to no blood, and this kind of story would be probably significant amounts of action and blood ToT)
i love historical stories though, when we see people like abigail with somewhat of a grounded lens. She’s the kind of person, young woman, i see really going across the ocean at that time. Naive, then learning, the world constantly shifting on sand as she has to come to grips with the old lies and new truths, then again, then again. The plain safety of society in comparison to the dangers when she’s near pirates, but also the awareness they exist outside society because civilized society is death and suffering to them and people like them. (I think part of Elizabeth Swan’s appeal as a character in potc, especially the first movie, is this similar journey. Elizabeth knows the lies aren’t all true, knows politics is bullshit in a way a bit more mature than abigail and more like miranda, but she still doesn’t understand what life is like for actual pirates. why they can’t exist in her world, why william turner being one would be a line in the sand, why they are both truly dangerous as the ghost stories she grew up with and ships she saw killed and her own City she saw killed. but also the place she finds her own solace and freedom later.

Lets talk about how these spotify songs confirm byler’s endgame.
Will’s songs
Tumblr media
Don’t you forget about me: illustrates Will’s feelings after Mike says they won’t be together for the rest of their lives (but have to get gfs). Love’s “strange” (stranger things). And Will fears change will pull them apart- and as it rains he hopes Mike won’t forget about him/ and questions if Mike will ‘ever love him’. And Mike in the rain (instead of “walking on by?”) calls his name.
“Tell me your troubles and doubts.Giving me everything inside and out and Love’s strange so real in the dark. Think of the tender things that we were working on…Slow change may pull us apart.Don’t you, forget about me.Don’t, don’t, don’t, don’t.Don’t you, forget about me.Will you stand above me?Look my way, never love me?Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling.Down, down, down. Will you recognize me?Call my name or walk on by? rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling. “
Tumblr media
“Don’t you try and pretend. It’s my feeling we’ll win in the end.I won’t harm you or touch your defenses-Vanity and security.Don’t you forget about meI’ll be alone, dancing you know it baby .Going to take you apart.I’ll put us back together at heart, baby Don’t you, forget about me.”
( Will physically took them ‘apart’ -from the photo. But in the end it’s also Mike who fears Will will forget about him too. And Will doesn’t harm Mike by picking at his insecurities - like lack of ‘security' in their relationship. But just says the truth that it’s “not possible” to replace him (after he moves). And of course deep down they know they’ll be together in the end. )
Tumblr media
upsidedown: Just Will saying he loves Mike and he turns Will ‘insideout” (like the previous song) and “upsidedown”. And he loves him but he’s “crazy’ (cough ‘crazy together’) to think Mike is all his. But no matter what he’ll always love Mike.
“I said, “Upside down, you’re turning me.You’re giving love instinctively.Boy, you turn me inside out .And ‘round and 'round-Upside down…Instinctively, you give to me the love that I need.I cherish the moments with you… no one makes me feel like you do…I know you got charm and appeal. You always play the field.I’m crazy to think you’re all mine.As long as the sun continues to shine. There’s a place in my heart for you, that’s the bottom line.”
here i go again: Will saying he’s “not going to fall in love” ever (like he said in s3) cause he doesn’t want to waste time on Mike. But he keeps backpedalling on the idea and desiring to love Mike for ‘the rest of his days’. Like how Will said he thought they’d never get gfs but play games for the rest of their lives.
“ (verse 3)And here I go again on my own.Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known…Like a drifter, I was born to walk alone. And I’ve made up my mind.I ain’t wasting no more time . (verse 4)Just another heart in need of rescue- waiting on love’s sweet charity.I’m gonna hold on for the rest of my days'Cause I know what it means to walk along the lonely street of dreams (verse 5) And here I go again on my own .Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known.Like a drifter, I was born to walk alone. And I’ve made up my mind I ain’t wasting no more time.BUT here I go again. Here I go again. Here I go again.Ooh baby, ooh yeah.”
Take my breath away: This excerpt speaks for itself that byler is real/endgame after Will moves/s4 and 5. XD
Tumblr media
Mike’s songs
Tumblr media
Will’s canon Spotify playlist. He ALSO has the song “I’m still standing” by Elton John (who is gay)? Aka cause Mike has a ‘romantic comeback’ with Will XD
Tumblr media
I’m still standing’ is a guy bragging about a breakup and now feeling like a kid -lol Mike saying he feels like a 7 y old after the breakup . And moving on -lol it’s mileven).   The album is from “to be continued...” I MEAN, C’mon. That’s , very on the nose for s4 byler happening after mileven XD
‘Your blood, like winter, freezes just like ice” (when El broke up with Mike , “cold as ice” played).”I got a taste of love in a simple way.And if you need to know why I’m still standing. You just fade away.Don’t you know I’m still standing better than I ever did?Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid.And I’m still standing after all this time.Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind.”
‘Baby I lied’, also reminds me of the byler fight where Mike insults Will/talks about El and then says to Will “ But, we’re not kids anymore. I mean, what did you think, REALLY?  That we’d never get girlfriends? Sit in my basement and play games for the rest of our lives?” Causing Will to storm off crying- thinking Mike doesn’t even imagine Will being there for the rest of his life (in favor of a girlfriend). And then Mike (although already knowing of his feelings for Will) realizing that it wasn’t a temporary crush/phase- but that he was in love with Will. And only realizing he can’t live without him when Will left. Making it sink it to Mike that he was lying to Will during their fight.
“Did I say that I’d be okay if you said good-bye? And did I promise you I could take it if we were through? And forget about these feelings inside? Baby I lied when I told you I could walk away .Baby I lied…And did I ever tell myself I could always find someone else? Did I say if you left today it’d be no surprise? Did I ever leave any doubt I could hold up if you walked out? I know I told you that I could survive. Baby I lied…And now that I can see you walking out of my life . Saying good-bye, I realize….”

also ‘Love is a battlefield’ (could be recontextualized/interpreted through a que*r lens  given the time period-typical hom*phobia) . Love would be considered a ‘battlefield’. ( The song could be. about 2 people refusing to state their feelings/ holding back from doing anything romantic. Despite both people in the song secretly knowing the other secretly reciprocates mutual romantic feelings)  . But they fear pursuing anything cause society says their love would be ‘wrong’. It also reminds me of s3 byler fight . Both ‘standing’ secretly in ‘heartache’. One character in the song(Mike) being mean to the singer who’s angry and wants to go home (Will). Then after that (Mike/song character) begs the singer (Will) to stay but then is mean to the singer again . So in response (Will/singer) gets annoyed and then asks ‘am I in your way? or am I the ‘best thing’ you have?(s2 byler ref). And the singer could internally question if they made a move on the Mike (/song character) would they be rejected? And like that singer ,Will, also throws Mike’s words in his face by saying he actually did think they’d be together for the rest of their lives without girlfriends (cause he may suspects Mike is full of shit?). The singer pretty much says-when it becomes impossible to ignore your romantic feelings for me - you’ll realize you’ll need me ! The song also emphasizes they’re “young” (kids) and Will/the singer  questions if their love will get  “old” , but quickly decides their love can’t get ‘old’ or die (despite Mike’s lies stating the contrary) * Also saying “no promises” could be a ref to show it’s the opposite of mileven who have the promise line.*Seems like the song is from Will’s pov.
“We are young.(Heartache to heartache) We stand. No promises(No demands)…We are strong. No one can tell us we’re wrong. Searching our hearts for so long. Both of us knowing, love is a battlefield. You’re begging me to go. Then making me stay. Why do you hurt me so bad? It would help me to know : Do I stand in your way?Or am I the ‘best thing’ you have? When I’m losing control. Will you turn me away? And when all this gets old, will it still feel the same? There’s no way this will die. But if we get much closer.I could lose control. And if your heart surrenders-you’ll need me to hold.”
Tumblr media
‘Kiss off’ could also be seen through a queer lens aka Mike trying to deny he’s gay but realizing at the end of s3 it’s not a phase. And hopefully learning to accept it in s4.
“I need someone, a person to talk to. Someone who’d care to love. Could it be you?could it be you?Situation gets rough. Then I start to panic. It’s not enough!it’s just a habit! Hey, kid your sick. Well, darling this is it! You can all just kiss off into the air!Behind my back I can see them stare. They’ll hurt me bad . But I won’t mind. They’ll hurt me bad, they do it all the time.”
El’s songs
Tumblr media
The power of Love is the 1st song that shows El desire to learn about love despite it scaring her and not really understanding her relationship with Mike. (it’s a very heteronormative idea- “I’m your man /i’m your women” so we’ll fall in love). It also shows her more questionable behavior like spying on Mike. (The later songs illustrate mileven falling apart.)
“Even though there may be times it seems I'm far away. Never wonder where I am'.Cause I am always by your side.'Cause I am your lady. And you are my man...We're heading for something.Somewhere I've never been.Sometimes I am frightened. But I'm ready to learn of the Power Of Love.”
(The second song)Another one bites the dust is about a dysfunctional romantic relationship.
Tumblr media
Girls just want to have fun illustrates El’s annoyance with both Hopper controlling her, and Mike (like Hopper trying to control her) and keep her away from the outside world. And just preferring hanging out with Max and not having a romantic relationship.
“ (verse 2)My father yells, "What you gonna do with your life?".Oh daddy dear, you know you're still number one.But girls, they wanna have fun... (verse 4) Some boys take a beautiful girl and hide her away from the rest of the world.I want to be the one to walks in the sun.Oh girls, they wanna have fun.Oh girls just wanna have. That's all they really want. Some fun.”
Don’t tell me lies - (El in s4) saying they’re whole relationship is a lie and she was ‘naive’ to think otherwise. But now she knows her Mike will be with someone else and their relationship was always based on a lie. And she’s ok on her own. “Every move you made before was never meant for real.Over my naivety is this how I should feel?...they'll never ever be another one.Don't tell me lies.Don't tell me lies.Looking back I realize it's always been this way.We must note what has gone and never turn away...Broken loose from indecision. Now I'm alright on my own...I guess I'm alright on my own.”
I feel like i’ve talked the lying aspect to death but it’s an important element to their relationship.
Mike while apologizing to El at the grocery store never apologizes for lying -despite it being the cause of the breakup . He never apologized for lying cause the love is the lie- like Max said “boyfriends lie ALL THE TIME”. And it’s why the camera panned to Will when Lucas asked why Mike lied to her. And he never answers El’s question of ‘why do you lie?!’ (he just looks up silent and guilt ridden).  In s2, Mike says “i never gave up on you (to El). “ When moments earlier he says to Max “it took her just like it took Bob.” HE’S LYING AGAIN . He thought she was d*ad.Plus he also fought with Hopper in s2 (’about El’) in Will’s room too. He wasn’t actually calling Hopper the liar he was calling himself “a stupid disgusting liar”out of self hate . That scene was foreshadowing his lying to El in s3 (about his feelings for her). He blamed Hopper for his feelings for Will cause he told himself it wouldn’t have escalated if El had been around to ‘fix him’ . “I BLAME YOU! NOTHING ABOUT THIS IS OK! NOTHING ABOUT THIS IS OK. YOU STUPID DISGUSTING liar, liar, liar, liar”.starts crying.
In s3, mike (in Will’s room) did not reciprocate El’s kiss/ or say ‘i love you ‘ back  and had his eyes open while the same exact song plays that robin came out to: called ‘the first i love you’. These are the only times the song plays in s3. The ‘first i love you’ also sounds like ‘the first lie’ - that song played when jancy said they were just friends. it sounds the same cause jancy lied about it not being romantic while mileven lied by saying it was.
Ugh- why are the tags not working? I guess , please, reblog if the tags continue to act up or else no one will see this.XD

hey! what about 8, 9, 12, 26 for tmr (though, the CW DC is good, too, if you're feeling it) 😊
Oooh! (Also I didn’t know you also watched CW DC! Hooray!! I will probably answer that too!)
Not going to lie, your weakness is Newt @graeae , my weakness is Gally — I admittedly wanted to answer with him far more than was probably applicable lol 😂
8. Most fluffy ship
TMR: post-canon in safe haven? Newtmas fix it. I just think their potential for kindness and healing is too good. In the Glade? Probably Nalby, but like, I imagine it to be a very secret love affair. Very pride and prejudice hand touches motifs. In public you’d never know, only radicals would guess such a thing (I say Frypan) but it’s all love and declarations in private. Maybe not so much fluffy but romantic.
DC: Felicity Smoak/Barry Allen. Particularly when they first met. They’re just two nerds trying to make their way in their awkward world.
9. Most angsty ship
TMR: Thomally, but I’m p sure we all saw this coming, lol. They have so many ways in which the angst can flow. They’re oil and water yet two sides of the same coin, both wanting to save everyone but one’s instinct is defense and the other’s is to attack, they just don’t see how fucking critical it is that you need both. Nally is a close second. I think it’s a hard earned love affair born of a lot of tragic understanding, and I’m coming to love them.
DC: Coldflash, which is also not surprising. They’re just a conglomeration of tragedies that they’re both trying to bury — both out to prove something, but by totally different means — and the whole “I see the good in you, you see the bad in me” is just ripe and volatile.
12. Character I see in only one ship
Alby. You converted me to Nalby, but I really don’t see him with anyone else (unless I completely tailor another glader’s personality to meld with his). Sadly, Alby is just SO focused on leadership and survival… I think only Newt could ever break through that. However, I would have LOVED to see him develop a relationship with Teresa. But like… brotps in their own right.
DC: I only really see Len with Barry, but I’m starting to warm to a poly relationship of coldwestallen
26. Characters that you like in every dynamic (lovers, friends, enemies)
TMR: Believe it or not, I love Thomas in every dynamic. He is passionate, focused, charismatic, and investigative. As a lover, this is beautiful in his devotion to finding out about his partners and taking care not to hurt them, to protect them, to inspire them and make them push their boundaries but also ensuring their safety while he does it. As a friend, he is a close confidant, he’s not so much a cheerleader as he is a SUPPORT PILLAR — if his friend has a goal he will help them achieve it. He spots patterns and connections and while he can be oblivious and self absorbed at times, he can also show up and help in a pinch. As an enemy he is DANGEROUS because he doesn’t view what he’s doing as antagonistic or destructive. He’s trying to help. He craves approval and following, even if he’s leading people to their death. He is willing to break the rules that are long in place and provide safety in order to achieve his goals. I think, if he doesn’t convince someone to join his flock, it could actually be really easy to hate him. And if someone feels he’s betrayed them, it can really leave them reeling because them feel like he loved them but now he’s willing to bring them down — and the worst part is he probably looks guilty as hell doing it. Which makes them question going against him, even if they feel they need to.
DC: Snart. Hands down. He’s a cold blooded bastard who hides a lot of pain, who is brilliant and delights in his trade, making him the most devoted for the few people who are in his circle, an intelligent and impish lover, and a terrifying villain. There’s a reason why, even if Barry could kill him easy, he’s still intimidating just in his confidence.
Thanks for the asks!!! These were so fun! 💕

With the constant allowances and how soft Lauren is for Leyla, I totally forgot that when Lauren feels cornered, she lashes out and can be a huge asshole lol. I couldn’t imagine a fight between them before episode 3, but that back and forth they had over the patient, which was work related and not personal, feels like an accurate glimpse into the future. I totally agree that something her mom says could trigger some lingering guilt. She’s really rationalized what she did because she hardly breaks-
-but I can see her being extra hard on Leyla at work(seriously this time, and not just to keep the residents at bay) and nitpicking at her to try and abate that guilt. I’ll hate it, but I’ll take that over distance. Lauren pulling away and Leyla unsuccessfully trying to get her to talk would be actual pain, because they’re both stubborn and I feel like eventually, Leyla would reciprocate in kind and be just as cold. I’m not one of gods strongest soldiers, their upcoming fight is going to break me lol
hmmm see i think lauren has massive, massive, respect for who leyla is as a doctor and though that doesn't mean she's going to agree with every medical decision leyla makes (as we've seen), i think that combined with knowing how hesitant leyla was at first about feeling like she deserves to be at NA, would be a big deterrent from her guilt manifesting that way.
given how much lauren adores leyla and is Very aware that she's in the wrong and leyla is the one in the dark here, i think the guilt would most likely be turned inward rather than against leyla, you know? so like you mentioned, pulling away and maybe being oversensitive to comments, reading too much into harmless things and overreacting that make people stop and go 'why are you acting like this'? maybe even avoiding leyla on some level? yet lauren has been, is, such an open book when it comes to leyla that you wonder how long she could possibly keep herself at arm's length?
you know, i went back and re-read the showrunner's interview where he talks about 4x05 and he said re: bloom's SL 'it's a beautiful storyline and a great, great episode for them.' maybe we all expect this episode to be a major turning point because the bloom family usually has a negative connotation? but if we think about it, when lauren's family has popped up it's usually been an opportunity for her to subvert the messiness and rise above her family's pattern. when her mom shows up, asking for another chance, lauren's gut reaction is to shut her down. but as we see things unfold, she decides to try to move forward instead and forgive her mom and make new memories rather than dwell in their haunted pasts. the episode when she gets money from her family trust? she grapples with what to do because to lauren, it's blood money and ultimately she puts it to good use by donating to the senior meals program.
so maybe this episode will be another side problem that lauren and leyla tackle together that gives them a deeper understanding of each other? leyla about lauren especially since this will be (assumingly) the first time she actually meets someone from the bloom family. where she'll see how much lauren has overcome from her own disillusioned upbringing and loves her a little more for it. maybe the real ramp up will be closer to 4x10 because like i said, just how long could lauren bottle up guilt when it's at the forefront of her mind? 5 episodes is contextually within a season, a lot of time and content.
THEN AGAIN MAYBE I'M TRYING TO LOOK AT EVERYTHING THROUGH TOO MUCH OF AN OPTIMISTIC AND LEVEL HEADED LENS WHEN THIS SITUATION IS UNPREDICTABLE AND WILD! cause hey! devil's advocate! maybe leyla and lauren growing closer from this isn't mutually exclusive with her guilt rearing it's ugly head! it's definitely possible what whatever shocking realization lauren has about her own mom makes her reflect on her own actions and guilt. sigh. is it tuesday yet? i feel like i'm going crazy FLKSDNLKF.
