Amy Dallon as the Minotaur

The Metatextual Monster: how reading Amy Dallon on multiple levels is necessary to understanding her.

I'm gonna be real, this started out as a daydream about drawing Taylor as Icarus, but I care way more about the Minotaur, and Taylor isn't the Minotaur. Possibly some art about this to follow, but I type faster than I draw. ~700 words.

How many of you have read House of Leaves? Wikipedia. The most important thing to know is that House of Leaves is three stories, which occur nested within each other. The story at the heart is a documentary about a house in which a closet door suddenly appears, which eventually grows into a hallway and then a labyrinth. The next layer is a blind professor's commentary on this documentary, which was discovered scattered around his apartment after his death. The top layer is the chronicle of a tattoo artist trying to reconstruct the commentary. All this to say: it is a book about meta-commentary, which makes describing its themes difficult.

In House of Leaves, the professor has tried to remove all references to the Minotaur by burning the pages of his notes about him. The tattoo artist writes down everything that failed to burn, and indicates that it was burned using red, struck through text. The Minotaur is a character which does not exist, but he haunts the book.

On the top level, he represents the constant editing, rewriting, and destruction of the book itself. Down a level, he is a monster who is stalking the characters in their minds. A claw mark is found next to the professors dead body. Down a level, he's the guilt and shame growing within each author which they project into the house. The labyrinth in the house is a black hole, it signifies nothing, but the human mind impresses its own ideas and image into it.

I'm now realizing that I've written three paragraphs without mentioning Amy once. Shit. Ok. The good stuff.

On the level closest to the text, Amy the character is the malformed, rejected child. When her malformation makes itself known, she is permanently rejected and confined in an inescapable prison. Like the Minotaur in House of Leaves, her ghost haunts the people who fear her and obsess over her. They can't stop thinking about her (Victoria) despite how that obsession only hurts them. When Amy's status as monster can be instrumentalized, it is, like how the Minotaur of myth was used as a method of execution for the youth of Athens. She's set free and used once again.

On another level, Amy Dallon haunts Worm. Her arc is fully fleshed out, and it is tragedy. Like the Minotaur, on one level she must been seen as symbolic. She represents the self-destruction of the nuclear family. In one version of the myth, the Minotaur is the bastard son of Minos. The king did not sacrifice a bull sent to him by Poseidon, and so the queen was cursed to fall in love with the bull. Here, the Minotaur represents the ultimate perversion of the natural order. The king did not honor the god, and so the wife did not honor her husband, and so the child did not honor his mother. Amy represent the same overturning of the natural order. Carol hated the daughter, and so the daughter destroyed her sister. These stories suggest that the so-called natural order actually has something deeply wrong with it!

On the top level, Amy is a scapegoat for the audience. Like the Minotaur in House of Leaves, the reader projects their own hatred on her; they treat her with the same lesbophobia as the text does, if you read her a layer below the symbolic critique of the family, if you read her as a character. People consistently write about her as having an incest kink, or other deviant, highly stigmatized fetish. People post about her being dirty, or ill-intentioned. This reading accepts her as ontologically evil, rather than a product of an oppressive structure. The exact form of the Minotaur (deviant, dirty, ill-intentioned) varies from person to person. He acts as a Rorschach, illuminating what the observer finds offensive.

Like the Minotaur in House of Leaves, Amy must be read on multiple levels. She is a character, she is a metaphor, she is a mirror. Isolate any of these levels from the other, and they fail to make sense. Separating the symbolic from the personal is often what leads people to falling into the trap of projecting lesbophobic narratives onto her!

The Minotaur is out to get you, and Amy is too.

I am Back from vacation! Thought on new ninjago season under the cut :)

First off, I just wanna say that I watched it at 6am in my hotel room with headphones while my friend slept next to me lol. So I watched it all again yesterday too. Turns out I'd missed a Lot.

I really loved the pacing in this! Each character to me felt like they all had something to do and it all went towards the plot. Wildfyre learned to slow down and let herself heal, Kai and Nya both learned the paitence and tecnique to do Rising Dragon. Lloyd OFC got a Lot to do with his visions and panic attacks! I really liked how they handled his mental health in this one. Cole being back didn't feel forced! he was there bc Bonzal was essential to Ras' plan. Sora got a ton of development and I do wonder if they'll have her learn spinjitzu in part 2. And of course, Arin. Boy is Going Through it. It's a nice parallel to Lloyd also having a rough time. While Lloyd is haunted by possible futures, Arin is terrified of not being Good Enough to contribute to the team Or to make his parents proud.

This post would be hella long if i rambled about everything i loved in this season But I wanna highlight Some of my favs!

Cole and Geo Constantly holding hands and leaning on eachother (and geo's flashback to s1 being changed so they're holidng hands More)

Bonzle's whole arc and how she's a person now! Hella trans implications and also just a really sweet story when they show that she Does have agency and her creator Does recongnize and care for her

Sora and Arin's dymanic continues to be Really Good! I like how the initial excitement for being a ninja has worn off and they're starting to struggle.

Speaking of Arin, I stg that scene of him and Ras fighitng in the last couple episodes makes me think we're gonna get a dark Arin arc. Maybe he won't Stay evil (I don't want him to be a villan but they Could go that way if they want) but seeing Lloyd's reaction to his student turning sides would be very angsty and Very good

Also Lloyd in this was So good! Even tho he's trying very hard to be a Master and the keeper of the monastary, he's struggling and these visions are only making it harder on him. I'm sure we havn't seen the end of these visions and I'm sorta hoping they'll come to some big breaking point for him in part 2. Where he'll have to drag himself back up and Never Quit despite everything falling apart just like the visions said it would

Once again this show made me like kai again lol. HIs relationship with Nya and Wildfyre is So good and you really can see the similarities in how he interacts with them!

Ras' master is like 90 percent gonna be the Overlord. I'm aprehensive on this bc he's not really my favorite villan. Plus like he was Just the villan in crystalized so i feel like it's too soon for him to come back. once again gonna give this show the benefit of the doubt bc they've done a lto of stuff Really Really well. I'm just sorta hoping it's Not the overlord. Plus the powers were golden and that's Not the overlord's colors

what is timeline?????

i thought the shorts were two years after s1 and that s2 was gonna be between the shorts and s1???? but now the shorts are at the Beginning of the season and ryu is a teenage dragon? how long has passed? If it's been a couple years since season 1, it's a little less believable that arin and sora havn't progressed much fruther in their training. also no one Acts like it's been years?? But if it's Not a couple of years and Ryu just Grew up like that it's still a bit iffy. Ik they probably won't tell us exact times but I hope it's implied or Something bc im hella confused

so, tldr: This half of the season was Fantastic! From the animation being Incredible and the relationships between the characters being super interesting and realistic, this season was a ride from start to finish! I'm excited, and a bit scared, to see what part 2 brings!

Hello! I love your apocalypse au I think you have really amazing ideas, it has been living rent free In mind 24/7 stg. I had a small thought if you don't mind :,) I was thinking about apocalypse Vax doing something similar to canon (and something ravens tend to do) that when he's out on runs or scavenging in old stores etc sometimes he'll find and grab little trinkets that reminds him of the group? like grabbing a small carved bear statue for vex, maybe a necklace with a flower on it for keyleth or a little mouse toy for minxie, cool looking guitar picks for Scanlan etc. it's a small gesture but in a world where everything is just so shitty all the time I imagine it would mean a lot to them:,)

(Also I say no one would get on his case but there is probs some teasing when he gets something for Keyleth specifically) One thing I'd imagine he'd grab for the whole group to enjoy would be music CDs to play in the car, only on long non stop drives of course so as to not get attention dragged onto them. (maybe he could find an old personal cd player with headphones?? gods does anyone even remember those XD ) got to admit now I'm just thinking of one of the times they actually set up base/camp somewhere, him and keyleth sharing headphones and Vax getting her to dance with him to make her smile and relax.

Also I'd imagine the first few times he does it they all have different reactions, Grog would just be straight forward and maybe give Vax a shoulder punch (light punch not hard, still moves him a bit tho lol), Vex would roll her eyes but would very much cherish it, Percy at first would be very confused but would later be very touched (maybe even make a raven shaped trinket for Vax in return?), Pike would just hug and thank him, Scanlan would joke around with him but inside he is actually super touched by the gesture, and Keyleth is just delighted and most likely blushes. (I'd imagine some of their reactions stay the same and some would just change in small ways/they'd expect it)

Seeing Richrath Project 3:13

if anyone at all is reading this i know you're thinking "who tf is that" and I didn't even know until about a month ago myself so-

they're an REO Speedwagon/Gary Richrath tribute band that I heard was coming nearby via local radio contest giving away tickets. I REALLY wanted to go bc you know I'm an REO hoe, so I entered the contest (even tho I would've paid) and decided to contact the band about photography permission bc why not. Welp their manager lady or whoever got back to me and offered to put me on the guest list so I can get into the show for free and photograph them. Saved me $25 (which i promptly spent on a tshirt) but yeah! I've never had a band do that for me!

the 'venue' it was at (if you could even call it that) was a local rod and gun club. yeah. it was outdoors and they played under a lil pavilion while everyone brought their own folding chairs it was a very hick area but that made it unique and intimate I guess?

the whole place still gave off bad vibes tho toinrtgwnwgrf shady ass republican vibes

the opening act was this local guy and his wife...

i mean they were very good but they opened with singing God Bless America and me and my sister wanted to laugh so fucking bad and it just confirmed all the Bad Vibes we were sensing bc they did it again with another American(TM) song

anyway during this couple's act, a praying mantis flew over me and my sister and landed RIGHT in front of the husband onstage and we were like 8^D

shortly after that ANOTHER mantis almost landed on me and i was like NO NONONONONONO and kicked it away

my sister looked under our picnic table for the mantis and found a toad instead

this toad then hopped onto the lawn in front of the 'stage' like it came to watch the show

when Richrath finally came out it was sweet relief

they opened with Don't Let Him Go and the singer from afar looks exactly like Vince Neil but sounds just like Kevin it was very cursed

i kept movin around and was scared of blocking people's view but then one of the owners (?) of the venue came out right in the fucking middle to take pics with her phone and i was like aiight

the band kept posing for me i stg i was so nervous i felt like THEY were watching ME

when they played Roll With the Changes people finally came out and started dancing

the people who started the dance were a group of people around my age????? they were obviously wasted bc nobody my age around here likes REO :'3

couples were slow dancing to Can't Fight This Feeling and ;-; made me feel something

every time they went into a different song I haven't heard live I turned to my sister (who isn't an REO fan) and went :OOO

should probably mention this was the first concert ever played at this place (again this ISN'T A VENUE LMAO it's just like picnic grounds)

they introduced Flying Turkey Trot and then they had to stop in order to do a raffle for the venue erofnwerofwerging it was so fucking funny to me the way the singer was just like *picks ticket* ..."number 327538"

TGCF THOUGHTS!!!!! I‘M LISTENING

I just woke up 7 minutes ago but TIME TO RAMBLE!!!

Tgcf is the best thing I ever accidentally stumbled upon I stg! Back in late November- the last day of my Thanksgiving break actually, it was a Friday- I wanted to watch Pacific Rim. Pretty sure I'd seen it once as a kid, but I have no memory of what it was about, so I wanted to rewatch it because I heard it was pretty good. And so I decided to check Netflix for it first because I don't go on Netflix a lot it could've been on there idk lmao And that's when I saw the donghua; a scene from the first episode was playing (the scene where Xie Lian sees a wraith butterfly for the first time and Ling Wen contacted him immediately afterward) at the top of my screen because I think it was recommended for me since I was watching anime and another donghua last time I was on Netflix. Anyways, I temporarily forgot about looking up Pacific Rim because the animation in that scene looked so fucking PRETTY and Xie Lian's voice sounded so soft and gentle, and the synopsis Netflix gave me sounded pretty interesting, so I just sat there in my bed like "oh my god, I'm going to check this out after the movie"

And that's exactly what I did after finding the movie on smth else and watching it (it was pretty good ig, not my genre of movie tho). But because I'd watched a movie I didn't remember the synopsis, and so honestly, I was very confused watching the first couple of episodes. I barely understood what was going on lmao- and then THE scene from episode two played and I was like "hUH???"

Because it was the most romantic thing I've seen in a WHILE and at that point I realized I was watching a donghua, not an anime, and didn't think censorship laws would've been able to show lgbt+ relationships and so I was there thinking "Okay that was so romantic, wow, uh... That had to be unintentional, though, right?" The fact that I was still confused about the plot and what was going on didn't help me in this situation because I know for a fact if I'd knew what was going on there would've been NO WAY I could've just brushed that scene off the way I did.

It luckily didn't take me too long after that to suddenly remember the synopsis and realize that THE scene introduced the other main character, and I started understanding everything so much better after remembering that. I was still kind of confused though because holy shit why are there so many fruity moments, it drove me up the wall because I still thought it was all unintentional lmao

Don't worry though! I figured it on episode five! It went like this: It's the scene where Xie Lian asks about Hua Cheng in the Spiritual Communication Array and finally learns his name and is like "oh that suits him :)" and it just cuts to a close-up of Ling Wen looking distressed as FUCK. I think that cut is so sudden and her expression looks so funny that it distracts me from what Xie Lian just said and I'm like "omg, I need to take a screenshot of this". HOWEVER! Netflix doesn't let you screenshot, so I googled Heaven Official's Blessing to see if it was available anywhere else. And as I looked at the search result my eyes caught the review tab on the right of my screen, and I catch a word because it's in all caps. The word was "LGBT", and when my eyes locked onto it I stopped everything and went "..... HOLD THE FUCK UP-"

Three reviews and an additional google search later, I'm literally losing my shit because OH MY GOD I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS BL BUT IT WAS, WHAT?!"

And I'm so glad I found out early on in that episode because it's literally the same episode as the ox cart scene, and I think I would have died if I was still playing ignorant at that point lmao- and after screaming to all of my friends about accidentally watching something lgbt without realizing one of my friends knew exactly what I was watching and so I went into his dms and reacted to the rest of the first season to him. It was so fun lmao, and I got done watching it at like 2am or smth so that meant the ending got me me emotional than it probably should have laskdh

I enjoyed the donghua so, so much. I'm not going to lie, there was some point very early on where I genuinely considered quitting because I was becoming too confused about what was going on, but I decided to stay and that's when I remembered the synopsis. And I'm so glad I stayed because it was so good!! The animation and character designs were so nice, and the music during a lot of scenes were almost breathtaking. AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE STORY-

So after finding out there was a manhua- OH MY GOD WAIT A NEW CHAPTER CAME OUT THIS MORNING- I binged all of the available chapters in a single day on that following Saturday literally just after binging the donghua (It was a fortunate time to do it too, the artist had been taking a break for complete the next volume so and started updating again not too long after I binged what all I could read). And the manhua about took me out because the romantic moments were even more romantic and everything looked SO PRETTY. It was also very similar to the donghua, although there were definitely some details that were different. I found it really interesting.

After that, I heard that the og source of the series was a series of novels, but I was honestly on the fence about reading them because I didn't know where to find an English translation. So that Sunday I kinda just searched for tgcf content online and was very happy to get some. Sure, I might've spoiled a couple details like what the ring really was (I didn't get it the first time I watched the donghua because it was literally early morning when I saw the last episode), and it was after learning these little tidbits that I caved and decided that yeah I was going to try and read the novels.

And so I found an online source of the entire series (minus the extra chapters) and started reading that Monday at home. I immediately started enjoying it even though it was the first time I was consuming the same story (the first two arcs, at least). It got to the point that on that Wednesday I decided to pull up the website on my phone and read at school too, because the last two periods I'm a library ta and get some free time to read, and quickly got into territory that I hadn't seen in either the donghua or manhua.

Ngl some parts confused me again but it was GOOD, it was GREAT.

Like book 1 was fun and the way it left on a cliffhanger to perfectly begin the flashback that book 2 is. Also, book 2 hurt like a bitch even though it was shorter. Book 3 picked up off from book 1 perfectly, and was so enjoyable because both the plot and romance had really picked up and I was losing it. And then book 4 came around, and despite it being the shortest novel in the series it fucking ripped my heart out and spared it no mercy. You think book 2 is painful and that it can't get worse but then you read book 4 and it gets worse. IT'S WORTH IT THOUGH! Because the final novel, book 5, is AMAZING. So many sweet moments, so many moments of laughter, and quite a few tears- and this is coming from someone who never spills tears over books or shows, yet I was reading that last book with watery eyes and two steps away from crying because the ending chapters AHHHHHH

I finished the novel series in about a week. I honestly want to reread it because I know there were a lot of bits that went over my head the first time (such as somehow not realizing the Yong'an in the Ban Yue arc is THE Yong'an idk how that escaped me!). I've also rewatched the donghua a couple of times (and I realized something really amazing with the character designs my second time through; gods and ghosts have pupils that are more slitted, while humans have round pupils!!!) and I reread the manhua right before it came off hiatus with my laptop's nightlight off to appreciate the true beauty of it alsdghas

Anyways I actually have to go, but anon feel free to ask me more! “Sokka.”

“No.”

“Sokka...”

“No.”

“Sokka—!”

“You just had him! It’s my turn! Besides, I’m his favorite.” Sokka bumped his nose with Bumi’s and tickled his tummy with his fingers. Bumi was hardly as big as a loaf of bread, but his laugh was as loud as Appa’s happy-groan-growl. “Isn’t that right, Boom-erang? Yes, it is. Yes, it is~ Ow!”

Bumi didn’t let go of Sokka’s finger even as Sokka stomped his foot and bit his lip to hold back a curse that would have given Katara more than enough reason to end him. Bumi may not have any teeth, but, Spirits, did the kid have some jaw strength.

“That, Snoozles, is called karma.” Toph simultaneously scooped Bumi from under his arms and bumped her hip to Sokka’s; and though the touch seemed light, the Water Tribe warrior left a dent in the wall as he flew from the blow.

(Zuko winced and probed Sokka’s drooling, almost-broken form. Sokka clung to life...but just barely.)

Maternity suited Toph just as beautifully as Katara, and Bumi smiled a supernova when she cradled him in her arms. His grasping hands reached for her face and patted her cheeks to feel the curve of her smile.

“Awwww, look at you, little warrior,” Suki cooed. She offered her fingers for Bumi to latch onto, and his giggle reached crescendo as she wiggled his little fists. “You are absolutely adorable. You’ve grown so much!”

“He’s heavier, too.” Toph frowned. “And a little cold. Hey, Flames-for-Brains—”

Zuko was a shadow at Suki’s shoulder and already curling his hands under Bumi’s bum and back. It had taken him a while to learn how to hold Bumi just right, but now Zuko accepted the transfer with ease.

Bumi froze, looked shocked, and then turned to bury his face in the little sun holding him.

Suki cooed some more. “Looks like you’ve got some best-uncle competition, Sokka.”

Sokka was on his feet in the next second. He looked at Suki like she just grew a third head. “What?!” he cried, his voice cracking like when they were kids. 

They all laughed, Sokka sulked, and none of them thought anything of Sokka’s (or their own) volume until Bumi flinched and sniffled.

Then he started to cry.

And Sokka looked ready to throw himself on a pyre to save his nephew from even one more tear.

“Sokka!” Suki hissed. Zuko looked as ticked as she sounded.

“Oh, nononono, it’s okay Boom-erang. It’s okay. I’m sorry.” Sokka tripped over himself to offer his hands to the babe in a small sign of apology. “It’s okay. Uncle Sokka was just being silly.”

Bumi’s tears thinned to small streams...

...but not before the Avatar tore through the temple to save his crying little world. 

Aang turned the corner at such a high speed and at such a sharp angle that he slid, parallel to the ground, into the adjacent wall. He was shirtless, shoeless, and so flushed with panic that he rearranged his facial anatomy with how wide he made his eyes.

“Bumi?” He fell twice before standing. “Guys, where—What’s Bumi—?”

“Calm down, Twinkletoes. Bumi is fine. Sokka is just a moron.”

“It was an accident!” Sokka pleaded in a whisper.

Aang teleported to Zuko’s side. Bumi turned to his father like a sunflower did to the sun—knowing where he was and grasping for him even though his eyes were closed. 

Once Aang had little Bumi safe in his arms, his world stopped tilting all crooked. His baby boy’s cry was broken by a comforted sound—content—that muted his next whine into a dull whimper. Smacking his lips, Bumi cuddled into the warm safety that held him, but he squirmed when he found no robe to hold onto.

“Shhh, shhh, shhh...It’s okay, Boom-Boom. Daddy’s here. Shhh…” Aang held Bumi high enough so one of his hands could anchor onto his prayer beads. Bumi’s other hand flailed until it found the fingers of Aang’s free hand, and Bumi finally—finally, bless the Spirits—calmed. He almost looked on the verge of sleep. He curled into his father’s chest, bodily hugged Aang’s hand, and gently gnawed his fingers.

Then it was quiet.

Then Toph smacked the back of Sokka’s head.

Then Suki did, too.

“Ow! What was that for?”

They said nothing, but their glares said everything. Zuko walked up, pinched the bridge of his nose, and flicked between Sokka’s eyes.

“Seriously?!”

“Hehe!”

They all looked over at father and son. Bumi giggled again and held Aang’s finger a little bit tighter.

“There’s that smile,” Aang said. He kissed Bumi’s head and blew a small raspberry that made his son giggle even louder and squirm even more.

Then Aang stopped. 

And Bumi looked at Sokka expectantly.

Then Bumi started to cry.

Suki turned on Sokka. “What did you do?!” she demanded in a whisper that shook the room like a shout.

“I didn’t do anything!”

“Sokka!”

“I swear, Zuko! I swear!”

Toph smacked the back of Sokka’s head again.

And Bumi…Bumi giggled.

Toph smiled something evil. “I think Bumi thought that was funny.”

Zuko pinched between his eyes and mumbled a dozen different prayers to a dozen different deities. Sokka backed up like he wanted to do the same, especially when Bumi cried again.

“Now, now, come on, guys, let’s not—Come on, Suki, I know at least you can’t…u-um…”

Katara rounded the corner so fast that a wind like a bite-sized hurricane chased in her wake. The way she slid into her brother should have sent Sokka through the wall, but the Spirits Zuko had prayed to cushioned Sokka’s travel through the air by catapulting him among the sacks of flour and grain.

Bumi laughed like he was born to do nothing else but smile. Katara melted, weighed down by a relieved grin, as she vanished and reappeared at Aang’s side.

She kissed her husband and son, gave Bumi one extra just because, and turned to the others like she was a spirit that demanded a blood sacrifice if she were to remain benevolent.

Katara looked to Suki for an answer. Suki shrugged and pointed to Sokka.

...Toph grinned something even more evil than evil.

...Zuko sighed again but with passion and sulked into a corner to alert the mortal coil that everything was about to go to shit.

Sokka paused his struggle of getting free of the grain bags, shivered from the sudden cold rippling through the weave of the universe, and pulled himself out with a plea at the ready.

“Katara, listen, I don’t know what they said, but it’s not—”

The universe was merciful and Katara was all-knowing, but Sokka didn’t know what to think when his sister dragged him by his scruff to an awaiting Aang and a fitful Bumi. 

Then Bumi looked at Sokka expectantly.

And Aang put his baby boy into Sokka’s arms.

Sokka still didn’t know what to do even as Bumi smiled and squirmed, his hands reaching for something.

“I’m sorry, Boom-erang. Uncle Sokka didn’t mean to scare you. He promises not to—Ow!”

Bumi smiled around Sokka’s finger. Spirits, the kid had some jaw strength. 

The world got a little lighter as Sokka’s once impending doom retreated back into the form of his sister. Katara was shoulder-to-shoulder with him and making Bumi smile even wider when she brushed the fine hairs on his head.

“...You’re lucky you’re his favorite,” she whispered. 

Now it was Sokka’s turn to smile, and he couldn’t care less when Bumi gnawed a little harder.

“That’s my little Boom-erang~” he cooed. “I knew you would come back around.”

I’m still trying to get a knack for writing Sokka. He’s the member of the Gaang I struggle the most with idk why. I would have thought he’d be the easiest for me, but nope
